#they do use zippers and magnetic tabs though

Hiii! Currently making Howard's costume, and I'm looking for more info on how the skirt closes AND the skirt pattern. Any help would be SO appreciated!
Hey! I have this post about some of the construction and layers.
As far as the closure goes, it’s basically an extended tab. Here’s Cassie Silva’s both open and closed:
Tumblr media
And then the closure method goes on the overlapped section. The closure method has varied between Velcro and snaps, but you could also try magnets. (They also previously had a different closure set up using zippers for a bit, but I would not recommend it)
If you use magnets or Velcro make sure to get a stronger strength, and/or match the strength to the materials and construction you’re using. And snaps will cause stress to the vinyl so if you do use them I’d suggest using the black base as discussed below.
And this isn’t necessary, but for my own cosplay I’m planning to do either Velcro or multiple rows of snaps just to give myself some sizing range which Six has often done as well.
You can see two different placements of snaps used here:
Tumblr media
Left is UK make, with a single snap in the middle of the waistband. Right is US make (the early 2022 style) with two black snaps on either side of the trim. This is one way the US has accommodated for potential minor fluctuations in waist measurement, like I mentioned above.
Also, note that while the black trim continues the studs do not - this is so they don’t get in the way of the closure or make things uneven or bumpy.
You also may wonder how Cassie’s skirt is staying up even though it’s not closed - there are snaps on the inside lining of the waistband that correlate and snap into snaps on the back and side of the leotard.
————————
The other things that are worthy of note are exactly where the closure is located and the backing of the closure. Here’s a bunch of examples of how that’s varied:
Tumblr media
The exact placement of the closure has differed. Early iterations included the mic holster attached on top of the waistband tab (shown on Vicki Manser’s UKT costume, top far left) and the waistband closing in the front (shown on Didi Romero’s ANAT costume, bottom far left). But the current-and-definitely-best way is to have the mic holster on the main case, with the waistband tab attaching over in a way that nestles it right next to the holster. That keeps seams minimal and everything nice and stable. You can see that current system on the three furthest right photos on each row.
Finally, the base color. Originally the tabs on both sides would be a continuation of the rest of the waistband materials, just the same pink vinyl and trim (but again missing the studs as noted above). More recently they have switched to a pure black base on the space where the tab overlaps, most likely to use a more stable/strong material. It’s easiest to see that difference on the bottom row - compare the continuation of pink on both sides of Didi’s closure (far bottom left) versus the black gap that can be seen on Aline Mayagoitia, Abigail Sparrow’s CAN, and Audrey Fisher (2L-R, bottom row).
————————
For patterning I’ll refer you to @lightleckrereins, who has already been working on a post about that after just recently making her own.
Hopefully that’s helpful! If you need any clarification or have further questions, feel free to drop me another ask.

I recently made a gift for Hocus' birthday and I forgot to post about it here until now! Behold, The Unofficial Unlicensed Talking Magnetic Karl Heisenberg Plush!
More pics and info under the cut!
I've made dolls like this in the past, and had a pattern for it, but this project took me a while. Partially as he was hand sewn (and hand embroidered) and I have a mild hand tremor, partially because I kept adding stuff to him and making him more detailed as I went along (so much so he was late for birthday, sorry Hocus!) but I'm glad Hocus likes him thats the most important part! He wasn't entirely a surprise because I had said I wanted to make him for them, but I think maybe they weren't expecting how overboard I went on the project (nor was I! I just kept having ideas).
Tumblr media
I really wanted to be able to make an alternate outfit for Karl based on a fanfic my friend wrote so I made a base doll body and then made Karl's clothes with a bunch of little buttons and snaps. The shirt buttons are decorative (made of sculpey, I couldn't find small enough regular ones) and it has a hook and loop (velcro) tab on the inside. The pants are a combo of this and some snaps. The belt has snaps but technically works like a real belt and then the undershirt also has snaps as do the "boots". His necklace accessories (sculpey, wire, paint) just tie on and off loosely with strings of embroidery thread. The hat has a cardboard/maskingtape base for shape and just an eyeballed-pattern sewn around it (I think it turned out nice!)
Tumblr media
(this is prior to me adding his scars in embroidery thread).
The Glasses though are attached with his second feature
Tumblr media
I knew I wanted to add some semi powerful magnets to his hands so he could pick up metal objects because that just MAKES SENSE with Karl's powers. I also made him his hammer (paper mache, paint and sculpey again) and added in a magnet to it's handle (as I wasn't working with actual metal for it lol, but I forgot to photograph it before I sent him off) . But in the process of doing that I realized if I attached some magnets on the inside of his head I could also make glasses that snap on and off, and that solved the issue of them staying in place.
Tumblr media
Third feature: HE TALKS! Yes, just as advertised on the box if you squeeze him he says a voice line. Just one voice line really, but it's a long one. I'd argue it's probably the most important line he says in the game that really decides his fate with our protagonist (not in his favour, unfortunately). I used a voice recorder for plush toys that allows up to 20 second recordings. one of the unlisted features is there is a zipper on his back so they can take the recorder out for battery replacement, or to rerecord the message if desired.
POV: you're about to go in the hole (I only took a vid for this in the middle stage lmao). The last part of the manual goes over the alternate outfit and then includes a personal message for Hocus I won't show here. The alt outfit, is like I said before, based on a fanfic. But it's actually the unpublished portion of Hocus' long running fic series so its technically SPOILERS. I may post about it later because I actually tea-dyed fabric while making it and it was a more involved process than expected lmao. I hope you enjoyed reading about all the details of this ridiculous project! Oh! btw the box is actually the box the Chris statue came in for the RE8 collector edition. I bought it a few months ago from ebay (found a good deal!), and inspiration struck when I realized I still had it so thats why Karl got an official looking unofficial box lmao. I just cut chris' face off it for the window haha.

Clearly my spacing and stitch sizing is a little off, but for a proof-of-concept and just eyeballing the distances as I stitched, I think this (very) rough draft of the embroidery for the Oswin apron turned out pretty good! For the real deal, I’ll have to iron that linen fabric, and then lay out my stitches with a ruler, make sure both the length and the width is closer to screen accurate than it is here.
The late night lighting on my craft table makes the red look really orangey, but it’s actually a perfect match for the red of the dress, which is somewhat of a miracle considering that I ordered them online from two different sources, sight-unseen. I would have been happy with close enough, so that was a nice surprise.
Doing all the embroidery for the apron will definitely take quite a lot of time, but even just this little bit was so relaxing and satisfying, I’m suddenly really looking forward to this project. I’m going to try to keep myself focused on finishing the belt in time for Halloween -- and I actually made really good progress on the most complicated bit of it today -- but once I have a little more free space on my craft table I think I might work on getting the first part of this prepped and measured out, so I can start embroidering in the evenings. I’ll probably start with the middle of the neckband so that my roughest stitches will be the least visible.
But first, the belt!
I really do want to get the belt finished in the next two weeks or so, so I can have the whole base costume to wear on Halloween. I have all the pieces for the belt pulled together, but nothing is actually assembled yet, and I don’t want to start attaching things to the belt until I have all the individual pieces made, so I can figure out the spacing. I’m making several of the weirder bits from various odds and ends I have lying around, but the only thing I’m making completely from scratch is the wedge-shaped oddity:
Tumblr media
The screen-used one was probably a bit of toy the prop department dug up and painted, but since this costume has no pockets or bags of any sort, I want to turn that wedge into a flap-top pouch to stash my phone and room key and such in -- on the assumption, of course, that someday I will eventually get to wear this to an actual con.
My original plan for it was pretty simple, just a wedge-shaped bucket pouch with a flap that secures with magnetic snaps, make a faceplate out of foam to replicate the look of the screen-used one, easy peasy. But my phone is so big that keeping it upright made the wedge way too big compared to the rest of the belt. Turning my phone sideways helps, but to keep the pouch from getting too wide, the phone really needs to stay at the top of the wedge -- which then leaves a weird smaller wedge of empty space below it.
So now I’m thinking an upper pocket, accessed by lifting up the flap, where the phone will lay sideways, parallel to the belt itself. Then below that, a smaller pocket in the lower part of the wedge, which turns out to be perfectly sized for room key, credit card, ID, cash, chapstick, etc -- all those small but important things that I hate not having a way to stash on me while I’m in costume. That bit will have a zipper closure, hidden under the flap, so I can make sure none of that important stuff falls out.
Which all sounds like an excellent and useful final product, but trying to think my way through the 3D shapes involved was seriously breaking my brain earlier. I ended up spending like 30 minutes just sort of staring into space, imagining moving the fabric around, how I would connect the pieces together, where the weak points are likely to be (specifically, the bottom of the pocket that holds the phone), how to make the whole thing hold its shape when built out of scraps of wool, suede, and craft foam, and how to machine-sew the seams in the wool in an order that won’t result in being unable to sew something without sewing the whole pocket closed.
I think I have it. I’ve drawn out the foam faceplate in its true size, based on the size of my phone, and I’ve sketched all the pattern pieces for the wool lining in miniature. There are a couple of places where cutting the seam allowance from a flat piece of fabric will be a little odd, but I think I’ve managed to shift those to the corners that can survive having small holes (ie, my phone isn’t going to fall through a hole that size, but something like a safety pin might). Tomorrow I’m going to cut the whole thing out of paper in its true size, tape the seam allowances together, and make sure it actually works.
Did you ever make those 3D papercraft cubes as a kid? Where the six sides of the cube are printed on a single sheet of paper, with fold lines and extra little tabs so you can overlap it in places and tape it down? This is just like that, only it’s an irregular wedge shape instead of a cube, and the interior is broken up into two parts, with a solid wall in between them. And for the real deal, I can’t tape the edges, I have to pass the wool through a sewing machine, hopefully without any of it getting too fiddly. But hopefully the paper-and-tape version tomorrow should point out any flaws in my plan before I start cutting out the wool pieces.
I also did a proof-of-concept today on gluing both wool and craft foam to suede, and it seems to have gone well. Suede (and leather generally) is odd in that sewing it actually weakens it, so my plan is to make the interior out of wool, with a bit of (faux) horsehair braid to give it extra structure along the straight lines. Then I’ll glue pieces of suede cut to size onto the outside of the wool, to provide the outer body of the pouch, and give the whole thing more structure and strength. The back panel of suede will extend up and over to become the flap that covers the top and front of the pouch, and onto the exterior of that I’ll glue the foam pieces with all the details to match the screen-used one. I think with all those together, it’ll have enough strength and structure to keep its shape, but the wool interior will provide a soft and quiet lining, so nothing in the pockets is banging around.
But honestly, I’m mostly using these materials because I have scraps of black wool and black suede that have been lying around in my fabric stash for, oh, let’s see -- just over 9 years for the wool, and almost 18 years for the suede, though the suede at least has been used in other projects since then. These are small enough pieces that this is really all they’ll be useful for, and the black should be unobtrusive enough that the only thing anyone will actually notice will be the foam faceplate that looks like the screen-used one.
That’s the theory, anyhow. We’ll see how it all comes together. This is by far the most complicated bit of the belt, and it’s up there with how complicated it was to flat-draft the pattern for the drape at the neckline of the dress. Once this is done, putting together all the other little bits for the belt should go a lot faster, really just combining pieces together, gluing them down, and painting.
Not counting today or the 31st, there are 17 days left until Halloween. I should be able to knock out the whole belt in that timeframe, but only if I don’t let myself procrastinate too much. And on that note, maybe I’ll start on that paper mock-up tonight rather than putting it off until tomorrow...

The Fuck You Say Part 2
Read Part 1 here
Exactly  86 days later.
Otabek took one step forward then rapidly changed direction until he could hide behind a pillar instead. Now in safety, he tried to control his suddenly erratic breathing.
“Don't be a pussy, Altin.” he goaded himself. “Just go, do this for fuck’s sake.”
He realised he probably looked like a complete idiot, up against a pillar in the lunch hall of the college common, hissing at himself, so he pushed away before he drew attention.
His feet carried on their previous direction, even though the whip of a messy blonde ponytail was already out of sight.
He knew where Yuri was going.
The irony of the fact was not lost on him.
He’d seen Yuri again, from a distance a week or so after the entire debacle. Since then, he’d realised that unfortunately he shared a fair few classes with the guy and had actually put way too much effort into making himself as inconspicuous as possible. So far, so good. Yuri didn’t know, thank goodness.
But.
Buuuuut.
Otabek, after returning to his apartment, severely disgruntled and embarrassed, couldn't actually go back to normal. Fuck.
He had absolutely tried. Opening Porn Hub and ignoring the voice in his head telling him he was an idiot for paying for a service everyone else used for free, he went to his tabs.
Found his favourite. Blonde men and women, open their mouths for the camera, smiled or moaned. After a few seconds, he looked at his still flaccid penis and cursed.
“There's nothing wrong with having a type.” he muttered to himself, when the guilt niggled at his conscience and Yuri’s words were repeated over and over. “Fuck him.”
But the guilt wouldn't leave, and the penis wouldn't get hard.
The clubs were still full of pickings, definitely, and he magnetized his ‘type’ after all. But then one night, a perfect little c-cup wearing a backless top and painted on jeans had opened her mouth so he could pour a shot into it and he’d almost choked.
The sexual prime of one's life is a terrible time for introspection. But introspection happened and Otabek was in the front row.
He had to admit it, eventually, that he’d picked Yuri because he looked like a pillow queen and nothing else. He hadn't cared if he was funny, or clever, and honestly, couldn't remember most of the conversation they’d had on that one date. He remembered being flirtatious and making sure he was as manly as possible, exuding his essential Alpha-ness.
Looking back on it, he cringed that he’d actually used the word ‘Alpha-ness’ legitimately, even if it was in his own head.
Enveloped in his own cringe-worthiness, he’d been finding it hard to hook up with the frequency he’d become used to. Probably a good thing; he had to pass college. But it left him frustrated and annoyed.
“Hey Chris.” he sighed into his mobile one afternoon.
“Ho, Beka babe, what’s pissing on your battery today?” Chris’s chirpier tones filtered through the line.
“I just...have a question. I think. Fuck.” Otabek groaned, head between his knees.
“Uh ok? Is it about fucking? You never had that problem before.” Chris said with a knowing chuckle.
“Actually yeah, it’s kinda about that…” Otabek tried, still completely at sea. He had things to say, but lacked any vocabulary in the area.
“Shoot.”
“You know when we went out…”
A snort of laughter. “When we were fucking you mean?”
Otabek frowned into the phone. “Don’t be a fuckwit. I took you out and stuff.”
Another, louder snort. “And stuff.”
“Hey.”
“Beka,” Chris said, placating but not really. “We’re friends now, but we were just fuck buddies then. You took me out, made me cum, then went home.”
“That's...not true.” otabek hesitated.
“It really is.” Chris affirmed, shameless and undaunted. “I mean, can you even remember where we went on dates? Honey, you had one thing on your mind, and as long as you go there, you didn't care what the map looked like.”
“But…”
Otabek was trying to recall at least one cafe, or restaurant, but found that he really couldn't. Chris laughed, but it was kinder.
“Its ok, Beks. I got my money’s worth. Like you said, you always paid. I got like, the best meals.”
Otabek huffed and frowned. “You’re paying from now on.” he said crossly, playing with the tag on his zipper.
“We go dutch every time. But only since we stopped boning and starting being friends.
Who cares anyway?”
“Did it...bug you? Like, was I an asshole?”
“Beka,” Chris sighed in exasperation. “Of course you were. You were an asshole on a motorbike who gave me multiple orgasms. It was divine, I knew what I wanted and got it.”
“You make it sound like I paid for your meals and you paid me in sex.” Otabek grumped.
“What!? No! Idiot, what's going on with you?”
Otabek rubbed his jaw, the bruise only just fading.
“Nothing. Forget it. See you at the rink.”

5 Bucket Bags You Need For Summer 2020
Tumblr media
Often times you have to sacrifice bag space to make a fashion statement. What if I told you I was here to help? In honor of never leaving anything behind, I present you with the essential bucket bags for summer 2020.
1. Straw Bucket Bag – Universal Thread
The shell material is straw making it perfect for accessorizing your casual outfit or having a picnic in the park.
This bag allows you to stylishly carry a plethora of items with you on any adventure the summer may bring.
The handles and strap of the bag are made of a polished, light-brown faux leather. There are double handles and a shoulder strap, providing you with the different options for carrying.
So if your should gets tired, take hold of the double handles for a better experience.
Even better are the interior pockets dedicated to organizing your small items. Best not to lose those hairpins huh?
Instead of some ordinary zippers, the closure compartment to this bucket bag is fixed with a drawstring.
More good news!
This bag is under $30. You have the extra space, a stylish option, and a low price. What more could you hope for?
Now taking care of your new bucket bag is not too much of a hassle. Don’t machine wash instead use a cold cloth to wipe the compartments for the best cleaning results.
On to the next!
Copy this look:
2. Georgia Faux Leather Crossbody Bucket Bag
Now, this bucket bag is a wee bit more expensive than the latter.
This crossbody bag will have you owning the chic look this summer as you browse museums in Paris.
Made of synthetic material, faux-leather, the bag is accented with gleaming golden hardware, as Nordstrom shops say.
The bag consists of a carry handle and adjustable crossbody strap.
The closure is a favorite of mine, a twist-lock tab. It is a delicate touch as an accessory to the bag.
Haven’t fallen in love with this bag yet? Well, hopefully, the leopard-print lining on the inside of the bag will do the trick.
It is offered in camel and black.
This bucket bag is not meant for you to fit your whole world in there. It is meant to compliment your outfit while having easy access to small items.
You will be heartbroken if you miss out on this summer outfit staple. Walk into every room in confidence with this bucket bag handing from your body.
Copy this look:
3. Galapa Cylinder Bag
Walking out the door with this bucket will definitely draw some eyes.
Made in Columbia, this bag consists of natural woven palm straw which lines the interior and exterior.
There is one handle, designed into a ring, but the closure is to die for.
The closure compartment is a flap top with a magnetic closure.
There are no dyes or paints used on the bag as the natural color beautifully complements the aesthetics of the bag.
There is a rich history behind this bag as well.
The designers were inspired by the traditional weaving patterns of the Wayuu tribe as Revolve states.
Due to this inspiration, each and every one of these bucket bags is produced by hand, in Columbia.
As stated on Revolve.com, “Kaansas is able to create a one-of-a-kind shoe with a story.”
This bucket bag is the result of rich history and great ideas.
Be one-of-a-kind wearing this bag on your visit to the beach. You’ll spend no more than $110 on this bucket bag.
Copy this look:
4. Bucket Bag
The name speaks for itself on this one.
This bucket bag is made of thick faux leather with a sensible handle. The shoulder strap is detachable and adjustable.
The closure is a magnetic fastener at the top of the bag.
It is only offered in the one color, solid brown
It mostly consists of polyester but the coating is Polyurethane. This is due to H&M’s goals to use all recycled, or sustainably sourced materials, by 2030.
The bag is produced in Burma and China.
As bucket bags tend to be, this bag is very spacious. You could carry a few books or magazines with your tablet to keep you company at the mall or a luncheon.
You decide.
Also, this bag is more on the cheaper side with a listing of just $35.
Don’t miss out!

It is luckily offered in five colors, tan, blush, black, burgundy, and olive.
The bag is made of soft full grain cow leather. So, if you were looking for some sustainability products this go around, sorrys!
The closure compartment is a drawstring and magnetic press-stud closure. This provides your bucket bag with some heavy duty encryption don’t you think?
Though a plus side, not for the sustainability folks, is that some bags may have natural markings. This takes unique to a whole new level.
Alongside the spacious interior, the bag encompasses two internal open pockets to store small items like lipstick or your cell phone. Also included is an internal zipper pocket.
This bag is determined to fit all of your many needs this summer.
