hi !! before I start this, i don't mean to cause any drama or anything, i just want a general discussion! , but i am unsure if i had been causing erasure in terms of the skin tone n race and whatnot of genshin characters
genshin's representation of cultures and all that is really good and interesting!! like the food, the structure of the environments, clothing...etc.
but i can't help but to wish for more darker skinned people like me,, i don't want to erase their race and culture (and i make plenty ocs that are dark skinned) but i think that just lighter skinned people are seen more and are more widely represented than people of my color
i'm not saying they have to be black, but knowing that darker skinned asians and people in general exist – i wonder why they aren't in the game?? i think all skin is beautiful but i feel sad when i don't see my own in a game i play often and idk if in my head i had been erasing their race or something , it's all too confusing now ,, i can only hope natlan have people of my skin tone now, hopefully as well as khaenri'ah (?) because sumeru doesn't have as many dark skinned people as i thought (in terms of playable characters) though i appreciate the npcs and eremites at the very least
i don't think people drawing or editing characters to be black or just dark skinned isn't really ”fixing them” but it does make me a bit happier to imagine them that way, though i will return to their original design because well, it's them and i can't change anything about it
ahhgh idk im just so confused rn and i feel like a bad person 😭😭 sorry for all this rambling,, i hope u have a great day !!
I'm actually a tan asian and I really like when people make genshin characters tanner. The posts were talking more about making characters have black traits like 3C to 4C hair and replacing their existing cultural clothing with ones in black culture.
Tbh I'm very dissatisfied with Sumeru's designs, especially Nahida. She feels like a mix between Indian and Persian culture which I feel like it's Hoyo trying to smash Sumeru's cultures all together but I really wish I could see more Indian elements in her.
And the reason why Hoyo primarily has so many pale skinned characters is to put it bluntly that's the beauty standard and is what expected to pull in consumers. I feel like even in Asian countries where people have more tanned skin, those people still yearn for pale skin. My family all have tanned skin but I remember being praised for my fair skin when I was younger.
Although I get that Hoyo's main target is the Asian demographic so they focus on creating characters that look like us and what is typically wanted/seen in Asian media, I feel like they have the misconception that Asian people don't like tanner people at all. I suspect that's why they purposefully botched Dehya's kit but even then, a lot of people still pulled for her and there were even campaigns to donate to children in China and Indonesia because of her pv. I feel like once (if they will ever) Hoyo realises that people do love dark skin characters, they will add more characters like that.

I hc that Hanataro is really insecure with the way he looks. So when he dresses up for any sort of occasion he’s super nervous and fidgety because he feels like he’s too ugly and lanky to bother wearing nice things.
So when he dresses up nice and ganju just goes quiet Hana is like β€œoh no I look terrible I knew this was a stupid idea” and starts panicking but ganju is like β€œholy Bonnie you look really good”
Hana has been seen in a couple of different suits, on OVA dvd covers and popularity poll art pages, and they always look way too big on him. Kubo would draw it to look normal if he meant to, but they look baggy or wrinkled in the sleeves or the blazer is too long etc. It's canon that Hanataro is good at sewing, but that detail was added way later in the novels. I think Hana looks stunning no matter what he wears. He has said that he likes his hair the way it is, back when Ichigo and Ganju said something along the lines of "These [squad 11] guys all have weird/botched hairstyles, but yours [Hanataro] looks pretty normal/average.", To which Hana replied, "Oh, really? Th-Thank you." And when Kon described Hanataro as having a "boring, but somehow popular with the ladies look." Shut up, Kon. At least he acknowledged that Hanataro is indeed handsome. πŸ’– Because he is. πŸ’–

He seems nervous or maybe even a little sad in two of them, and the one with the cute green turtleneck he's possibly looking at Renji, whom I edited out because I'm not a fan of him tbh, and comparing? He looks less sad, but more bored or like "Okay, can we get this over with already?" But I could see him maybe comparing himself a little bit. But in the second image of him in the teal suit, he looks happy and cheerful, so it seems he was nervous and unhappy about the photo, but happy later on because he enjoys socializing with his friends. πŸ˜πŸ’– Maybe he just doesn't like getting his picture taken, and well, that's relatable anxiety content. I do think that Hanataro has moments of comparing himself to others and feeling bad, but overall I think he doesn"t hate his body or his hair or anything. He even defends his name when it's called lame, and acknowledges that he likes his hair. Is he super confident? No, absolutely not. But does he hate his appearance or want to change his looks? I don't think so. I think he's satisfied enough with himself physically, if not sometimes wishing to be a little more muscular. I don't think Hana wants to be body builder or huge muscles strong though, not Ganju or Renji level. Maybe just a little more toned? I don't believe Hanataro hates how he looks though. He might be self concious because of the suit itself not fitting right, but I don't think it's about him not liking his body. πŸ’–
I also just want to say that the look of him in a nice, dark green turtleneck sweater with the sleeves a little too long so he has the cute hands partly covered look, plus the black blazer is A++ πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ™ŒπŸ€ The blazer could be replaced with any nice black jacket, though. Or a smaller black blazer that's left open. But I love Hana in comfy sweaters, he's just way too cute and handsome. πŸ˜πŸ’š
I also don't understand the mittens or clashing colors. Kubo has a terrible fashion sense, but this is common knowledge. At least it's better than that T-bone steak scarf he put on Hana once. πŸ˜‚πŸ₯© Really, what the hell was that? πŸ˜‚ I LOVE the braided knit ombre/gradient scarf though. πŸ’š The tie could have been a nicer color. It's ugly lol Kubo why?
