According to the responses to the 2021 American Community Survey available on the US Census Bureau website, approximately 13% of Americans self reported some form of disability. Initially, I thought that this was a high value simply because there's so little perception of it in media, unless that media is specifically designed to show people with disabilities. But then I looked a bit deeper into it. Nearly 50%(it was like 48 point something) of those who reported a disability reported an ambulatory disability. Given this figure, I wonder if the percentage is underreported. A lot of mental health and disability has only been accepted in mainstream media in recent years. There are also questions I have like:Do correctible vision deficiencies count as disabilities? I would argue yes. I wear glasses. It's not something I think about a lot, but without my glasses, I would be hard-pressed to function normally within society. They are an accommodation. Yet in a group of 25-30 people(the class i was in when i was thinking about it), I easily counted at least 5 who wore glasses. Obviously, that's not a large enough sample size to make any kind of assumption off of, but I think I could probably find similar numbers if i looked in other places. Part of me doubts that I was marked as having a vision difficulty despite having and wearing glasses. And it's made me think and wonder if 13% wasn't that large of a number after all. I mean, it's a massive population. It's 42 million people, but I wonder if the number is even larger than that. What do you think?
So, I think it's complex. I'm not saying you are wrong in your investigation, but due to the personal nature of disability, it makes me wonder, too. I think the answer will be just as complex, is what I am saying.
Simultaneously, disability is very common, but the idea of being "unable" to live or be productive makes it so that disability becomes a taboo. It leads you to believe that disability is uncommon, or only exists in the "extremes". I do think that contributes to the perception people have of their disabilities, especially in being in denial about their disabilities disabling them.
I think you can generally say that certain things, like eye vision, can be disabilities, as long as we also recognize that it exists on a spectrum. I also have eye glasses, but if you ask me what I'm disabled by, I probably wouldn't bring that up unless it is relevant, in the narrow ways it is for me personally. I think that's part of why the ambulatory statistic is high. There are many situations where your disability doesn't really... disable you, but you're still disabled because there are aspects of your life you either cannot do, or you need help in order to do.
Thirteen percent is a large number, but when you consider the vast array of disabilities, the number of veterans and elderly, and (like you said) the number of people likely either in denial about their disability or the people for whom education doesn't include disability, the number could very well be thirteen or higher.
It's interesting that ableism is so ubiquitous, yet so many of us are disabled (with or without our knowledge).

golden core anon again! I haven't gotten the 7s translation yet, but in the ExR translation JC "retracted the whip, but it was already too late" and (a few paragraphs later) the hit actually landed on WN, leaving a scorch mark. I don't which is more accurate, but I've always had the impression that it wasn't really obvious for WN that JC was trying to stop the fight! I'm also 90% sure that WN wasn't lurking nearby to watch the whole exchange, so he's probably working with a lot of incomplete information here (in a lot of ways lol). as for why he immediately decided to deal emotional damage, instead of restraining JC or just punching him in the face (which would've probably made more sense to everyone and also might've made JC's day somewhat better in the end)… my personal interpretation is that WN was already pretty mad at the whole golden core thing? he initially respected WWX's desire to sacrifice the golden core for his brother, went along with his plan so that JC wouldn't suspect anything, watched WWX suffer during the surgery, then watched him destroy himself in the Burial Mounds without a core… and then realized that the guy who prompted so much self-sacrifice is… maybe kind of a dick actually? who has been treating WWX with nothing but anger and resentment whenever WN was present to see it? and now he's actually attacking him? "yeah no, fuck you, no blissful ignorance for you anymore, you should know exactly how much he has done for you and maybe then you'll leave him alone". (don't get me wrong, I agree that WN wasn't exactly fair to JC during the reveal, especially if you know that JC had sacrificed his core for WWX first, but I kinda get where he's coming from emotionally)
The Seven Seas has what I quoted, and yes, Wen Ning does intercept the blow that was going to hit Wangji. I don't speak Chinese and definitely can't get into the business of comparing translations, I'm very specifically talking about the experience of reading this translation and taking it as a story/narrative experience on its own.
I'm not saying that Wen Ning doesn't have personal reasons for revealing the golden core (though imo his emotional state as described both before and after is... weird, but that's part for the course with the unreliability of the narrator re: Wen Ning specifically), and I'm not saying the scene makes no sense. I'm literally just saying it's interesting that as a writer, MXTX chose to make the golden core reveal not actually the climax of a deadly conflict, or the only possible thing that could have stopped Jiang Cheng in his tracks, or even in response to Jiang Cheng actually doing something truly egregious-- it's yet another misunderstanding and disproportionate response to a situation someone bursts into without understanding.
(There's also the irony that right after this, Wen Ning thanks/implicitly forgives Lan Wangji because he spoke up for Wen Ning and Wen Qing before they were executed... but Jiang Cheng also spoke up for them-- to say nothing of facilitating the entire Burial Mounds grace period by arranging the fake fight-- Wen Ning just wasn't there, and it (also) didn't work.)

i think that christianity (as presented in the text of the gospels, anyway) and i have irreconcilable differences after all. there are pieces that still resonate with me and maybe always will. but there are also pieces that are jarringly wrong to me. & i have no logical way of separating out the bad pieces from who jesus may have been and what he represents within christianity, when the gospels represent many of those pieces as things that he said.

hi :) i wanted to ask a technical / music question regarding 20 dollar nosebleed, but if u dont know the answer, it is 100% okay, maybe one of your followers knows the answer to this.
when i listen to 20 dollar nose bleed (i wish brendon was never on this song) i instantly get happy and was wondering...does it have anything to do with the song being in a major key
it being in a major key definitely plays a part, but its also just composed in a very upbeat way. its got like jazz trumpets singing on it, it has instrumentation that kind of sounds like mr blue sky by electric light orchestra, it has a swing and a swagger to it, with different parts of the arrangement landing on the off beat, and the vocals are sung with an upbeat and carefree tone to them. lots of stuff going on that makes it sound very happy. i cant speak to the production though.
if anyone has corrections or additions please feel free to share

we haven't spoken in a very long time, but i dreamt of you last night, so I couldn't help but think of you. I'm not sure you remember me, but i hope life is treating you well these days. take care.
I'm not sure what to say, but I can promise you I have not forgotten you. My time on Tumblr has been a mess full of hiatuses, I admit, but it will always be a place where I met some very wonderful friends, including you. With 100% honesty, I can say the friends I made here are some of the best friends I have ever had, even though most of us don't talk anymore.
It doesn't matter how often I speak with people, or if we never speak again. I'll always remember you, and I'll always think fondly of you and hope that life is treating you gently and kindly.
I hope you had a nice (or at the very least an okay) dream, and I'm glad to know you still remember me, too, regardless of all else.
Take care, love <3

Those who follow the Pern stuff on this blog will know I've thrown math at the dragons and whers and what we're told about them to work out height:length ratios and estimated average sizes. For the dragons this was one thing, and I eventually settled on a 1:2.4 ratio with average shoulder heights ranging from 9.3 ft greens to 16.6 ft golds. The whers also had their easy spot, as we get solid numbers for them and can presume from them that their height:length ratio is about 1:3.25.
The problem there comes with the whers' actual size range, as our best information outside of the ratio is Todd's stating that gold whers are of similar size to brown dragons. This has to be across one measurement, since the ratios don't line up. So we either have golds being as tall as browns- giving us an average height range from 7.4 ft greens to 13.5 ft golds and length range of 24.1 ft greens to 43.8 ft golds- or as long as them- giving us a height range from 5.5 ft greens to 10 ft golds and length range of 17.9 ft greens to 32.5 ft golds.
The latter is accurate to my estimates for 3rd Pass whers, but we can't know whether that estimate itself is accurate. We can be reasonably certain they grew much like the dragons overtime, as presumably they also started with browns and rankers and the first wher clutches are described by the DLG (the source I've got, if this is contradicted elsewhere show me) as being small horse-sized, definitely far smaller than either option gives us.
With all this in mind-

Bonsoir Katie ! What advice would you give to someone who want to start writing (novel, short story) ?
Bonsoir ! :)
**[Disclaimer: this is my advice based on my own experience -- the journey with writing is different for everyone, so do not take my words to be absolute truths, just little nuggets of information which you may wish to consider or disregard at your own discretion.]
I think my main advice would be...write what you wish to read. Create stories that interest you. If you write simply to cater to a particular audience, you will be bored writing it, and if you're bored writing it, then the readers are bored reading it -- or something will seem off when they read it, at the very least.
Be honest with yourself. Try your utmost not to limit yourself on what topics/themes/ideas you wish to explore. You can experiment plenty before deciding "oh, hey, this is pretty good" or "this piece will never see the light of day ever again". Ideas can come from anywhere, so let them. Don't block them out just because the thing/situation that sparks the idea seems ridiculous.
Don't fear disappointment. Writing is hard! Sometimes inspiration strikes you and it causes a natural flow in your writing, but it takes discipline and dedication to finish a piece. Writer's block is common and you may go days or months without writing (or at least anything they find decent quality). Some choose to power through it, writing pieces of lower quality so then eventually the good stuff comes back, and others wait it out a little and chip away at works until their flow returns with better strength. When you begin to write, or when to begin to edit, you may think "Oh dear God, this is terrible. What was I thinking?!" THIS IS NORMAL. Honestly, alarm bells should be ringing if this DOESN'T happen to you at some point to some extent during your writing/editing process (because if it doesn't happen, it means you're not thinking critically). BUT sometimes you may write a beautiful sentence you surprised yourself with (e.g. I have accidentally some rather poetic/aesthetically pleasing lines without even realising it, and only noticed upon reviewing the section) and you should allow yourself to celebrate these! This is a reminder that you CAN write! And it can act as a motivator to push you to finish your piece, if you so choose to. And besides, there's an editing process for a reason! That's where you REFINE your work -- up until then, rough drafts can be as shitty as you want so long as your idea or message/intention is clear and interesting to you.
Also, it may take a while to find what you're really good at writing. There's nothing wrong in challenging yourself either, but it's useful to know where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Experimentation would be helpful. For example, I prefer long-form storylines -- I find writing short stories IMPOSSIBLE and affectionately envy those who can do it!
Writing may also make you discover a lot about yourself which you never consciously knew about before. This doesn't happen with everyone, but it can occur. I find this therapeutic, but it can scare some, so if you find yourself in such a situation, I think it is best to acknowledge this new information about yourself and then either move on or deal with it in whichever way you deem fit (preferably in a healthy manner!).
And my final piece of advice, which is most obvious: read broadly when you can and enjoy writing! By reading other books, you'll naturally take in a lot of information re structure of a story, character development and general formatting rules (which then leave it up to you to decide whether to follow or disregard/twist these rules, depending on what your writing style is). By reading broadly, you familiarise yourself with a range of different writing styles, and you'll learn which styles might help improve your own, or act as inspiration for you in some way.
Saying "enjoy writing" sounds cliché but it certainly helps if you enjoy the whole act -- this is about you first: write what you enjoy and your readers or external interest will follow (even if it's friends or strangers online at first).
Hope this helps! ^.^ x

On an impulse I started FYA at like 3am this morning cause I was restless and couldn’t sleep and feeling some type of way. I think it’s been maybe a year since the last time I’ve reread? I really love going back to this one after some time has passed. It’s so gripping and I notice more and more after each pass over the years. Most significantly this time around I really appreciate the way you wrote Kylo tryingggg to show reader he cares through the little big things he does for her to show he’s listening and cares. I zeroed in on that this time and my heart is tumbling and going down so hard.
I also want to add a new song to the fabled playlist! Lana Del Rey’s “Say Yes to Heaven”. I know it’s a little soft but it has that desperate longing and begging. I’m adding it to my 80+ song playlist for the Kylo fic I’ll probably never write lmao. Idk I heard it for the first time today and it just ✨applies✨ haha
Thanks a million again for being around!

Damn, you sent this over 3 months ago, so any asks coming after this are even older than that... oops
Just want you to know how much I appreciate this - I know I don't respond to asks frequently, I sometimes just feel overwhelmed or scared or whatever, but I never stop being grateful that people have or continue to enjoy my work. It's special to me.
Thank you so much <3

I’ve seen that in some myths Athena only had a dad Zeus. But I have heard that in other myths Zeus has a wife before Hera and Athena comes from her
Is their a right one or are they just different versions?
Just different versions. Mythographers from different times and places have different beliefs so there are different myths. Metis is the first wife you're thinking of.

What makes them laugh? Do they have any daily routines? What is their love language? How do they show affection?
For WRH
Character Development Q&A
Tumblr media
[ what makes him laugh ] : one thing that's similar across both his lives is the fact that it's,, actually rather easy to make him laugh ! any joke or funny thing he manages to hear, he's probably losing it . doubled over-type laughter too . his sense of humour is probably the only thing that changed in the jump, to be honest, in that he attempts to not laugh so much at darker humour now ( though he'll give it as best he can still, sometimes without realizing it )
[ daily routines ] : walking . he takes a walk every day, no matter the weather or how he feels . it's been a habit of his since his childhood, when he'd sneak away from home and go exploring . he also has very set times on checking up on the garden outside his new little home : Right after he's pulled himself together, and just before the sun sets . so it's reasonable to say that he checks his garden at least twice a day . don't point out that his plants are dying though he knows and he's sad about it but he's doing his damnedest okay he's gonna fix them
[ love language + affection ] : one thing about him is that he's really big on touch . platonically, romantically, showing it, receiving it, giving it--no matter the reason behind it, and even when there was no reason at all, ruohan's just been obsessed with touch, so of course it's translated into being his most important love language and the biggest indication of affection he can give ( even if that's something he hardly gives out by the time he's Sect Leader Wen ) .
at the same time, though, you've gotta remember that unless he's making it super clear, there's likely not a super deep meaning about what / who he's touching and why he's doing it . if he sets a hand on your shoulder, he's just putting it there, and if he's touching someone else's possessions, it's just because he wants to feel it ( situation with the Nie brothers' father notwithstanding ) .
nowadays, though, it's also something he uses against himself in that he refuses to touch others unless he must, and even then, he still tries to fight it . in the back of his mind, he's always equated being able to touch / feel as him being human and alive . these two things being qualities attributed to him are things people ( especially people he used to be very close to / knew of ) hate / would hate if they knew about, though, so it's a manner of self-punishment
back to the happy stuff . another way he shows affection is giving verbal affirmations :p though he's far less likely to utilize this method
