suns out

dabbling in this realm of fanfic writing. this was inspired in part based on a true story and in part based on a dream that i had so theres that

summary: you find yourself in a music store in downtown los angeles where a certain superstar admires your work

word count: 3.3k

It’s roughly 3:17 pm when you’re sick and tired of the heat outside, the sun blaring down on your skin like it has any business to do so. You and your best friend had been exploring the town since early that morning, doing a late breakfast at some café a local had recommended.

Traveling was one of those things you just loved to do. You loved being in a new city as often as possible, as much as your work schedule and bank account would allow it.

School got in the way too, which is why the two of you took trips on your summer breaks. This time, you found yourselves in Los Angeles, downtown, the biggest pair of tourists you could probably imagine. You were only here for a week, the hefty California price tags weighed down on your ability to stay for too long, as the hotel you two had booked was already expensive enough.

You spent the morning doing typical tourist things, exploring the walk of fame and catching a cab to Hollywood where you could ogle at the mansions that lined the hills. The pavement burned beneath your feet, the summer heat in L.A. reaching a ridiculously high index that had your skin on fire. “Oh – hey! Look, a music store,” you pointed out to your friend. The front of the store you could see only a few strides away, it was worn out and cool, the letters faded, windows littered with concert flyers. “Can we go in? Just for a minute, alright? I’m dying out here,” you complained to her, your hand blocking the sun above your eyes. She laughed at your distaste for the heat and agreed, the two of you heading inside.

The cool air hit you like a kind embrace, and instantly you felt refreshed, sweat drying up on your forehead. “God,” you groaned in relief. The store was relatively empty, an older man stood behind the counter, flipping through a book he had sprawled out in front of him. There were a few others, young men with long hair who stood around a set of drums, their fingers dragging across the shining surface and their voices a mere echo in the background. “Welcome, how are you ladies?” The man behind the counter asked, and you shot him your best smile. “I’m wonderful now, thank you. The sun is absolutely insane today, we just had to come in and take a break.” The man agreed with you, “Feel free to stay a while, have a look around.”

Slowly, your eyes scan the small store, a wall of music books and old rolling stones magazines lined behind the counter and to the back for as far as you could see. The drums and percussion instruments you had already passed, leaving the young men to admire in peace. You were mostly interested in finding the guitars, the one instrument you moderately knew how to play. Your dad taught you when you were young, his days of being in a garage band far behind him yet not forgotten. He had passed the skill down to you, and although you didn’t practice or play every day, occasionally you would hear a song and be driven to go home and learn an acoustic adaption of it. You weren’t the best, but you imagine had you put as much passion into it as your dad encouraged, you could be a lot better. “I’m going to go find the guitars,” you informed your friend, and she nodded her head to acknowledge, her fingers flipping through vinyls on one end of the store.

Your feet carried you to the back, where there was a room set up that acoustic guitars lined far above where your arms could reach. There was a small amp and a stool set up in the middle of the room where guests could get a feel for their potential new instrument. Outside of those walls were the electrics, rows of Gibson’s whose price tag was untouchable to your budget and could only be admired. They were classic and beautiful, and you aspired to save enough money one day to buy your dad the Les Paul gold top guitar he dreamed of. After admiring the electric guitars to your liking, you made your way into the more secluded room full of acoustics. There were Fenders, and Martins, and Taylors all around, your eyes gravitating to a baby Taylor that sat in a stand. You picked it up and took a seat at the stool in the center of the room. The guitar was familiar in your hands, like the one that you owned although far less scuffed. Your fingers got accustomed to the new strings, and you played a familiar finger-style rendition that your dad taught you years ago. It was pretty and haunting and your favorite piece that you had ever learned.

Soon, you switched into another melody, playing a song that you had heard on the radio a few weeks prior. A pop song by Ariana Grande that you had revised acoustically at home, slowing the rhythm and making it simple. You hummed along, too shy to let yourself be carried away with singing out loud real words, so you kept the tune in the back of your throat and hummed instead. You were hardly aware of how much time had passed, your eyes closed to help you focus on not making a mistake, and you had yet to hear your friend asking to leave.

When your eyes opened, and a hand came down to mute the strings, a deep breath exuding from your lips, your eyes flicked up to the doorway. Startled, you nearly jumped out of your skin when your line of vision caught on the sight of a very tall, very curly boy standing there in the threshold in front of you. “Uh—” you sputtered, heat rising to the top of your cheeks. Your eyes were wide, heart was racing from the scare of seeing someone where there had not been anyone previously. “You’re – hi.” You managed, eyes finding the strangers.

“Hey,” he replied casually, one hand shoved in the pocket of his tight black skinny jeans. Your eyes took in the sight of him, black t-shirt that clung to his arms for life. He had a smile on his lips, perfect straight white teeth surrounded in pink, plush lips. The blush on your cheeks were relentless, never subsiding. He was pretty, and familiar, and something about the effortless cool of the boy had your eyes narrowing in confusion. “Wait.” You stopped him from continuing. “I know you.” You stated simply. Your mind raked, eyes flitting over every inch of his face. “You’re… aren’t you – I know you from somewhere, I think.” You sounded stupid and you knew it.

“I’m Shawn,” the boy answered, a grin on his lips that was proud and handsome. “Mendes.” His large hand reached out in front of his tall frame, welcoming you to take it. So, you stood, the guitar hanging in front of you and your small hand engulfed in his, shaking it politely. Your smile was shy, head almost ducked because you couldn’t stand the intensity of his unwavering eye contact. He was intimidatingly handsome, and you had no idea how long he had been standing, watching – listening. “I’m y/n. Nice to meet you, Shawn.” And then it clicked, and you knew exactly where you knew the boy from. His face was plastered on a billboard down Hollywood Boulevard, promoting a new album with flowers. You had heard him on the radio several times, new singles that had catchy hooks and rhythms. You knew him because you found yourself singing along in the car to school, songs that played too many times on the same radio station. You recognized his cool stature from the time that you watched him perform with Khalid on an award show. Same black skinny jeans, tight as sin. Same boots and V-neck shirt that hugged his body perfectly. “How long had you been there? Were you, uh – were you waiting on the room? I’m sorry if I, uh… if I held you up.” Your lip tugged between your teeth, shy and feeling dumber by the minute. You didn’t know what to do with your hands after he let go.

“Not too long, no worry honey. I heard you play that last one though, almost the whole thing. What was that? Sounded almost like Ariana Grande, but there’s no way.” Your eyes were trained on the way his lips moved as he spoke, but you forced your eyes to meet his, which never faltered. He had a small smirk on his lips, watching you. He was probably used to this sort of reaction. “Yeah, it was,” you answered. “I heard it a few weeks ago and I just, that was my, like – version. I just slowed it down, really, I –” he cut you off, saving you from rambling any further. “It was good, really good. I liked it. You sounded great.”

And there went any hope of your face returning to normal. Compliments were hard enough to accept, but a compliment provided by this young, inhumanly attractive boy, who also happened to be extremely talented at playing and singing – that was too much. “Thank you,” you muttered quietly, moving to slide the guitar strap off your body and back into the stand it had came from. “Oh, you don’t have to stop at my expense.” He said, taking a step forward with a hand out as of to stop you from putting the guitar down. “Please don’t, actually.”

You couldn’t believe your eyes or your ears, and you couldn’t help but wonder if this was happening actually at all. “Um,” you managed, eyes refusing to look up and meet his gaze that you could practically feel burning on you. “No, I – well, that’s. That’s very nice of you to say. But I… probably should get going. My friend is here somewhere, and we’re supposed to be doing touristy things right now.”

You finally look up to see his reaction, and his smile has dropped, tongue darting out to wet his lips and it’s almost sinful, watching him. You can smell his cologne with the short distance between the two of you that he had enclosed with his previous small step. Its hard to not feel intoxicated, your legs feeling weak in his presence. It’s stupid, you think, wishing to get a grip on yourself. You were never one to idolize or swoon over celebrities, as you tended to appreciate their art for what it was. This, however, was different. Everything about him made you unsure, feeling shy and intimidated.

“That’s too bad,” he concluded, voice husky. “I would’ve liked to hear what else you got.” His lips pursed, almost thoughtfully. “You’re here just visiting?”

“Yeah,” you answered, brushing your hair out of your face where it had fallen uselessly. “we’re here for a week. Just exploring, doing the usual L.A. tourist things. I saw this shop and I was dying to get out of the sun, so we ducked in here for a bit.”

“Hm,” he hummed, “this is a nice spot to have come to hide out. I visit when I’m in town. The owner, Mike, he’s cool. And it’s so off the grid and I never have to worry about being found, you know.” His hand rubs the back of his neck and you notice the tattoos on his arms for the first time. One is a guitar with other things inside it and you wonder what it means. You wish you had the time to stay and talk and learn and listen to him speak for hours. You want to hear him play, watch his calloused fingers run across the neck of the guitar in person. Your lip is tight between your teeth, a nervous habit. “Anyway,” he starts again, his eyes never once leaving your face, studying it, watching the way that you react to him. It’s terrifying. It’s amazing.

“It’s great,” you breathe, your eyes wandering across the walls. “I can imagine. I wish I could stay longer, I, uh – I’m familiar with a few of your songs. Some of the singles you’ve put out. And I’ve seen you play on television a few times. You’re great. Really good.” You sound like a fool, you conclude, making a mockery of yourself.

He laughs at that, a genuine smile that make the corners of his eyes crinkle up. “Thank you, y/n. Good to know I’ve not gone entirely obsolete just yet.” It feels like the both of you are just lingering, neither making the first move towards the door. You surely don’t want to leave, thinking that you’ll never be in the presence of someone like him probably every again in your life. You wonder why he hasn’t moved from the doorway either, mostly blocking your only exit. You’d have to duck past him at this point if you even wanted to go. “Where are you staying?” he asks, suddenly.

You give him a teasing grin, nose crinkling playfully. “Now, you know I can’t tell a stranger that information, Mr. Mendes. Haven’t you ever seen the movie Taken? She tells the first nice boy she meets exactly where she’s staying, and… you know the rest.”

He plays along, moving an inch or so towards you, the gap between your bodies becoming increasingly smaller. His scent is everywhere, and you must look up to meet his eyes. You can’t believe the sheer height difference. “I’m no stranger though, am I?” he teases you. “I mean – you’ve seen me on the television a few times, eh? May as well have known each other for years.”

You laugh softly, eyes darting to the floor. “Childhood best friends,” you agree. It’s all fun and lighthearted teasing, until you meet his gaze again and then it’s back to overwhelming, being so close to someone this unreal.

His lips are pink, wet from where his tongue had just darted out. “At least give me your Instagram? I know all about Los Angeles, all the best places to go. If you need any food, bar, club, anything recommendations, you know… you can just shoot me a message. I’d be glad to – help you out.”

You pretend to think it over. What’s the harm in handing over your social media account? You’re sure he won’t remember this conversation in a few days anyway. You had no intention of messaging him for any recommendations, content with just leaving this memory of him an exciting story to tell your friends when you return home. How coincidental it had been, for you to stumble into the same music shop that a well-known artist frequented the same day he visited. You hum in false thought, head cocked to the side while you pretend to think. He rolls his eyes and lets out a breathy laugh. “C’mon,” he encourages, strained.

“Fine,” you say with a huff, feigning indignation. “I suppose I’ll give it to you.”

You type your account into his Instagram app and find yourself, leaving your page open on his phone as you hand it back to him. “Great,” he answers, pocketing the phone in his jeans. “Don’t hesitate to message me if you need any help. I’m telling you, I’ve got the best local insight.” He places a large hand on your shoulder, giving it a squeeze as if to reassure that he is indeed telling the truth. Not that you doubted him, although you were sure anything he could recommend to you would be far out of your comfort zone or even budget for that matter. But his touch burns on your skin, all senses dialed to him and it makes you blush, yet again, your cheeks a familiar shade of pink and all he’s done is pat your shoulder like a brother would his sister.

“I’ll keep you in mind, Shawn. Promise.” You hold up your pinky between your bodies, eyeing him to see what he’ll do.

He smiles, friendly and beaming, eyes glistening with something you can’t read. His pinky wraps around yours and you both dare the other to break first. You could’ve held onto him like this for endless ages, but you didn’t want to be weird, and your stomach was full of butterflies that you willed to leave but wouldn’t. Your hand dropped to your side, and you flashed Shawn another shy smile, stepping to the side to move around his tall frame. “I’ll see you around, yeah?” you ask. “Perhaps on tv?”

“I hope,” he says, hesitantly moving to the side to allow you to pass him. His eyes stay trained on you, and you can’t believe how long this has gone on already. “See you, y/n.”

“Bye, Shawn!” You give him a small wave before heading to the front of the store where your friend is speaking quietly to the owner – Mike. When she sees you coming around the corner, her face lights up and she gives you a silent look.

“Thanks for letting us hang around in here,” she tells the owner, giving him a wave before she grabs your wrist and pulls you hurriedly from the store. “Okay, what the fuck?” She questions, excitement laced in her tone.

Your legs struggle to keep up with her quick pace down the sidewalk and away from the store. “What?!”

“How long were you back there with Shawn freaking Mendes, dude? I saw him come in the store and I wanted to say something, but I just froze, and I stood, and I watched him head back to the guitar area and I thought you’d just freak out but instead you come back grinning ear to ear. What happened? The guy up front says he comes in all the time!” She’s speaking so fast you can hardly keep up, but you guys stop a few streets away from the store.

“Uh – we just talked, that’s it. We talked about music, really. He was nice,” you add, hoping to satisfy her need-to-know. “You should’ve said hi.”

She scoffs, playfully. “I would have, maybe if he hadn’t spent his whole life back there with you! Geez, I mean can you believe that? Thank god you get sick of the heat so quickly.”

You laugh at that, feeling a buzz on your phone and you fish it from your pocket, the screen illuminating an Instagram notification.

Shawnmendes is now following you

You bite your lip, a small smile fighting its way to come out and you unlock your phone to see if it’s true. You quickly follow him back and have a look at his last few posts. Shots of him being on tour and some black and white photos that are just dreamy. Another notification appears on your screen. This time, it’s a like coming from the one and only. He had liked a video you had posted a few weeks ago. It’s of you in your room back home, lights dim and angled so that you could only see the neck of your guitar and the bottom half of your face. You had completely forgotten about the content of your account. Occasionally you would post short clips of you doing covers of songs that you had made to fit your style. And here Shawn was, as you sat gossiping with your best friend, listening to them and liking the clips. You could have died of embarrassment then, but you instead close and lock your phone, putting it away and out of your mind.

“C’mon,” you tell your friend, grabbing her hand and pulling her along the sidewalk. “What’s next on that itinerary of yours?”

Enjoy exploring our future. Enjoy the Intraspace!

Violet knows the other her was here. She knows they don’t have too much time left, and if either of them wanted to continue existing, things had to be done. What she doesn’t know is what she’s going to say to the other her. As Violet travels to the location specified by the phone app, she thought over and over about what she wanted and what was best for the both of them. Because through everything... from the surge of fond memories and the lasting bonds, Violet knows Vi was happy here. Her? ...She’s afraid to answer.

Either way, she’s here in a white tee and sweatpants. She just has to find someone that looks exactly like her — should be easy. Violet’s not surprised, but after asking a few of the Intraspace’s inhabitants, she quickly learns that Vi is rather well known in these parts. The other her was probably way better with technology than she was, which makes sense.

Anyway, Violet finds Vi in the MMO Zone, catching her at what seemed to be a decent time. Preparing for a dungeon expedition, Vi is clad in black robes, accompanied with a small pocket knife. A... rogue... if she remembers correctly. Still, even as Violet approaches, Vi doesn’t show any sign of hostility, rather, it seems like she was waiting for her.

“There you finally are,” Vi laughs, sheathing her knife.

Violet’s not sure how the other knew she was coming for her but relieved, she cracks a tiny smile. “If you were waiting for me, you could’ve waited in somewhere less... obscure.”

“Sorry. I got bored,” she shrugs.

“I don’t blame you. This app thing is still new to me so I couldn’t come faster even if I wanted to.” Attempting to pull out her phone, Violet realizes she was in the digital world and instead pulls out an empty flask.

A chuckle escapes and Vi takes the flask off her hands. “Looks like you’ll have to look for the app in a carrier pigeon instead.” She places a hand on the other’s shoulder as if gripping for her composure back. Nevertheless, she knew why the other was here, and she was ready, willing even. If it meant that both of them would live without this virus plaguing them, a quick agreement was nothing. “So? I can meet you in person and this’ll be over quickly.”

But Violet pauses, hesitates to log out ( not because she doesn’t know how to ). “Wait —“ She lets out a sharp exhale as her mind races. Was there a better way? Though she wanted Vi to return to a happier dimension, free from whatever the hell this was, she didn’t want to stay here. She wouldn’t wish this on anyone, so if she wanted to be satisfied with her decision, she couldn’t just agree to this. “Vi...? What if... there’s a way for you to go back but — I...” her gaze breaks and she squeezes her eyes shut.

Concern overwhelms Vi’s features and her lips fall into a frown. While they didn’t share the same mind or memories, Vi heard, knows the other deserves happiness whether that was here or wherever she calls home. She deserved that at the very least, to make such a decision for herself. And if it meant that her existence would become nothing then... Vi’s willing to take the risk. She knows she’s not the real Violet, that she’s just another dimension’s version of her. It pains her to even try to accept the fact — that her life is easily replaceable and means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Even still... she wants to live the life she’s built for herself. But could they both be happy...? “Violet... We can talk about this — let’s talk about it. Whatever’s on your mind. Whatever you think that will make you happiest because... you deserve at least that...”

“But you’ll —“

“Yeah I will but... I’m not the real Violet Parr with superpowers and a cool family...” Her eyes start to sting as her nose scrunches, holding back whatever it was that wanted to spill.

...Meeting the other’s gaze, Violet mirrors a sorrowful frown. “I’m not you either! I’m not Violet Traux with the sweetest of friends, and a normal student. Do you know how much I’ve wanted that? — my whole life. So you can’t just — “ at this point, she has to wipe her nose with her white tee. “You can’t just say you’re not real and that... you’re okay with going away like that.”

Vi listens but her heart isn’t in it. “Even still, it’s because of you that I’m able to have all this. It’s because of your existence that another reality was even possible for me here.” Wasn’t there a way for both of them to be happy?

“But I didn’t choose to come here... or stay.”

“You just haven’t found your reason to stay.”

“That’s easier said than done. I’ve tried and have been trying. For months... but I don’t — I don’t feel any attachment to this place...”

Resisting the urge to slap the real her across the face for spewing such absurd words, Vi instead grits her teeth, tightening the fist by her side. “You can’t hear how ridiculous you sound right now, but you sound ridiculous. How can you even say that right now? What will your mom think? And the friends that you’ve made? They’d be heartbroken to hear that from you. Aren’t connections enough? What more do you need? A million dollars? A significant other? The rest of your family to be dragged into this city? Because having your baby brother living with god knows what kinds of people is better than you suffering here alone? I can’t believe you could be so selfish, Violet.” Her tone, accusatory and sharp, slices the thick silence between them.

Violet feels the need to apologize, wants to but she knows that won’t accomplish anything. She feels sorry for herself, not the other her. Prolonging the conversation with another retort didn’t seem like the best idea either. But she's right. She is being selfish. But when her happiness depended on having the loving people around her with her, it’s immensely difficult to transition without them. She swallows with a parched throat. “You’re right... I am selfish. But it’s been a long six months and I — I don’t know how much longer I can keep trying — “

“ — You’re not listening to me, Violet. You need to be even more selfish. You want to get out of here? Great. Do it, find that exit. But you can’t do it alone. There are so many people who feel the same as you do but you still think you’re suffering alone. Wrong. All wrong. There are some things you can lean on others for, and you don’t have to feel like a burden to them. You don’t have to pretend like you have all your crap together. You don’t have to live like a zombie just to count the days. You don’t have to do any of those things. Maybe I’m not the right person to tell you this so take this with a grain of salt: but you have to find the smallest bit of joy you can and hold on to it. Forever and ever, until your heart can no longer handle it. As long as you can make your time here worth the trip, I’ll... fully support you.”

“...” At a complete loss of words, Violet internalizes Vi’s advice. With her escalating pulse and shaky frame, she finally nods.

“Anyway... I’ve been playing for a while so my head’s splitting in two. But... I’ll be waiting for you.

You just have to come.”

-Dresses ready for the apocalypse to start at the drop of a hat. Thick but light leather jacket (the kind you can’t get a knife through unless you’re Really trying), black leotard (cuz that won’t get caught/tangled in anything and is made to optimize movement), quick-dry cargo pants (I live in the biggest watershed in the US there’s no way I’m gonna be able to avoid wading through a marsh several times during the zombie apocalypse. also pockets, hell yeah), steel-toe boots. Dark brown hair cut real short out of the face (less noticeable, won’t get in the way or caught on things)

L&P: they fight constantly. L does give P tips on what to be ready for, but if P gets over the top L will fucking fight them. P is the only one who can draw this much of a reaction out of L.

L&D: L is actually pretty supportive of D. L appreciates D’s rhetoric skills and can even be a little protective at times. D is the most attached to L and will actively seek their approval.

P&D: they have a weird relationship. It’s both tense and chill. They will sit and keep each other chill, balancing their two extremes, but once that balance is broken it is hard to get back and they will quickly get overwhelmed by the other.

I was taking extra vitamins. I have low quantities of necessary vitamins anyway and the kids while protected from harmful substances i take, do benefit from healthy ones. They are miracle babies after all.

Nathaniel was telling Denise hes off to Wal-Mart to get Abreva or other herpes related medication. If i had a car, I'd go hide it from the shelf including for oral herpes.

He says it's not herpes but it's similar and it's cureable as in you quit using it, unlike in herpes which is said is incurable.

Its a virus they usually give to kids to prove to the parents the children have cancer. Like in baby formula or children juices. Foods marketed for kids.

They usually target certain areas of low income so the patients can use government Medicaid and they're arrogant to believe they have low IQ because they have a belief that money isnt all that important.

Which is dumb. Because people of higher intelligence are more likely to take their kids to the doctor. But he says they dont have time and won't use Medicaid.

I usually use a steroid cream but last night it was not helping!!! It had spread because i do have a very overloaded immune system and it was not working so last night was very whimpering. But it's much better now.

Understand it's not cancer. There's literally no such thing.

If you do take your child to the doctor and it shows a block or growth, choose radiation If you cannot stand to not treat your child. Do not poison them with chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy is a poison. The radiation often times is just like a tanning bed that you're in too long. So make sure to use a high SPF sunscreen.

Otherwise, Don't worry. If your child is pooping or peeing blood it will be from a popped polyp. So look at what you are feeding them. It can be in baked goods and chips.

What the Patriots need to do to win

PB: Let Philly build up a lead, then stick the ball in Tom Bradys hands? Im being glib, but when a team pulls off as many come-from-behind wins as this one, over such an extended period, what else are we supposed to say? You probably dont need reminding that the Pats trailed by 25 points in the third quarter of last years Super Bowl. Or that they stuck 14 fourth-quarter points on a previously dominant Jacksonville defense in last months AFC title game.

Perhaps the more nuanced version of that same answer is: keep on adjusting. As brilliant as Brady is in the clutch, it is Bill Belichicks capacity for tweaking his gameplan on the fly that makes this team so hard to beat. We saw it against the Jaguars, whose offense exploded in the first half but ground to a halt as New England started finding ways to keep Blake Bortles in the pocket. A different approach will be required against Nick Foles and company, but these Patriots know they need not panic if they dont have the right answers at the start.

BAG: Above all New Englands offensive line must protect Brady and they will have their hands full with a stout Philadelphia pass rush thats tormented opponents all year long. Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz likes to rotate Fletcher Cox, Tim Jernigan, Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry frequently with Chris Long, Beau Allen, Derek Barnett and Destiny Vaeao, an embarrassment of riches on the defensive line that allows them to pressure the quarterback without relying on the blitz. Look for the Patriots to run a lot of no-huddle to negate Phillys depth and keep the Eagles offense on the sidelines.

What the Eagles need to do to win

PB: Predictable, perhaps, but disrupting Tom Brady has to be the biggest part of this picture. The Patriots, as observed above, are masters of the in-game adjustment. Take away Rob Gronkowski, and theyll just fire up Danny Amendola. Commit to slowing down the run and they can either start to look for Brandin Cooks over the top or exploit your aggression with James White and Rex Burkhead in the screen game.

Brady is the one essential piece of the puzzle, and has played some of the best football of his career even this year at 40 years old. There might not be a team in the NFL better equipped than Philly to generate pressure with a four-man front at the tail end of a long season, however, thanks to an extraordinarily deep rotation which can alternate the likes of Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, Tim Jernigan and Vinny Curry with Beau Allen, Derek Barnett and Chris Long. That group must play up to its potential for the Eagles to prevail.

BG: Theres been no shortage of hand-wringing over Nick Foles, the back-up quarterback thrust into the starters role when Carson Wentz was lost to a season-ending injury in December. But the Eagles coaches have done a masterful job of crafting game plans around Foles strengths and masking his weaknesses, putting him in a position to make plays. They will play with irreverence and they will put up points as they have all year, with or without their franchise player.

Not surprisingly, it will come down to the defense, which rated among the NFLs best all season long. The Eagles must harry Brady and shorten the game to keep New Englands offense off the field. Its the common thread in nearly all of the Patriots high-profile defeats, including their AFC title game loss to the Broncos two years ago and both Super Bowl setbacks to the Giants.

Unsung player to look out for

PB: My first thought was Trey Flowers undersized for an interior lineman, and slower than you would really like for an edge rusher, yet somehow consistently productive wherever he is deployed by New England. But is he actually unsung any more? Ill go with Kyle Van Noy instead third on the team in tackles during the regular season and a wrecking ball against Jacksonville, who had made a positive start on their final possession until he sacked Blake Bortles for a seven-yard loss.

BAG: No one is better than Belichick when it comes to denying an opponents best weapon or strategy. That will create opportunities for outsiders like rookie running back Corey Clement, an undrafted free agent who was a longshot to make the team in training camp but whos emerged as Philadelphias best pass-blocking back and a dependable target on screen passes. Clement only rushed for 321 yards, but he leads all Philadelphia running backs in rushing touchdowns (four) and total touchdowns (six).

What youre most looking forward to seeing

PB: The coaching duel between Bill Belichick and Doug Pederson. The Eagles opened up the playbook against Minnesota, and were rewarded with a monster game from Nick Foles. So what does Pederson have up his sleeve here, and how will Belichick counter? And after each team pulled out the flea-flicker in the conference title games, what fresh misdirection lies in store?

BAG: Early fireworks. New Englands pass defense has improved greatly since early in the season when it allowed an NFL-record six consecutive opposing quarterbacks to throw for at least 300 yards, but the Patriots remain vulnerable over the top. The aggressive play-calling of Eagles coach Doug Pederson, whose first game as a head coach above the high school level was remarkably less than 17 months ago, has been a key ingredient Philadelphias sudden reversal of fortune. Dont expect a cagey opening. Coming off an NFC championship game where Foles became the first quarterback in NFL history with completions of more than 40 yards to three different receivers in a postseason game, look for Pederson to take shots downfield early.

One bold prediction

PB: Brady throws a pick six.

BAG: Brandin Cooks will go for over 120 yards receiving and a touchdown as the Eagles are forced to devote extra safety to Gronkowski.

Your MVP will be …

PB: Well if my bold prediction is correct then it might be the guy who runs that interception back, but Im going to go with Zach Ertz. The Eagles tight end absolutely dominated Harrison Smith a popular pick for the NFLs defensive player of the year in the NFC title game. Who do the Patriots have who can match up against him better?

BAG: Nick Foles, Super Bowl MVP? It might sound funny, but the 29-year-old quarterback has played himself into form since Wentzs injury shook the constitution of a city. After carrying the Eagles into the Super Bowl with a master-class performance against the Vikings, Foles career playoff numbers speak for themselves: 72 of 96 passes for 793 yards, with five touchdowns and no interceptions. That 116.4 passer rating is the best in NFL playoff history for any quarterback with at least 75 passing attempts, surpassing a mark held by Jeff Hostetler, another understudy who came off the bench late in the season to helm his NFC East team to an improbably Super Bowl win over a heavily favored AFC East opponent.

The winner will be …

PB: I honestly think well look back on this and marvel at the idea that the Eagles were ever able to convince us they were the underdogs, despite a 13-3 record and a 31-point win in the NFC title game. Yes, they lost Wentz. But weve seen enough since to conclude that this is still an excellent team. Eagles 24, Patriots 21

BAG: All seven of New Englands Super Bowls in the Belichick/Brady era have been decided by six points or less and theres little reason to believe the eighth will be any less touch and go. The Eagles will race out to a half-time lead and whether they can hold off New Englands inevitable rally, as an entire city chews their fingernails to nubs, will determine who comes away with the trophy. I have to admit it…There was very little forethought behind these two new ‘makes’. I made these cocoon dresses on a whim….merely because I thought they would look pretty good with my new Cocoon coat (here)! Shallow…but true. Now that the 2018 RTW fast is over, I’m feeling quite free. I can sew anything I want without a single thought about whether I ‘need’ it to fill a hole in my wardrobe or not. Frivilous sewing is the life for me!!

I’m such a sucker for a good knit dress in the winter, so if anyone waves a pattern in front of my face that gives me an excuse to make yet another one, I’m all in. And this one has pockets, which makes it perfect!

I absolutely love a dress with side seams that wrap around to the front. I’m a big fan of stand up collars too….so Audrey Hepburn!

Burda Style patterns have never been on the top of my list because they come in a magazine insert, so they all have to be traced onto pattern paper before they’re cut and sewn, and, well, I hate tracing patterns. I’d much rather buy a paper pattern, thank you very much. But the design of this dress was too good to pass up. So, I put on a binge worthy show just did it. This Burda Style pattern (1/2019/111) was worth the effort.

I loved the pattern so much I made two versions – – one from a soft, ‘poppy’ colored sweater knit I bought at the Mill End Store, and one from a textured sweat shirt jersey that I found at Joann’s (on sale!).

It’s always interesting to see how different a dress/pattern looks with a two different knits. The gray textured jersey is a heavier moderate stretch knit so the dress and collar look more structured in that fabric. The poppy knit is so soft with a bit more stretch so the fit is loose and easy.

The dress went together easily. The collar is cut as part of the bodice so that makes things simple. The shape of the dress is created by the forward placement of the side seams. The hardest detail is the zipper at the back. Fitting is pretty straightforward…you can modify at the side or center back seam. I used a double needle for the sleeve hem and dress hem.

I love the neckline and the cocoon shape of this pattern – obviously, I’ll likely make it again. And the best part? Both dresses work under my new coat:)

It’s always fun to follow an intense project like a coat with a less involved project, a palate cleanser! To be honest, the tracing of the pattern wasn’t as bad as I expected…really went pretty quickly and I’m getting better at figuring out all of those crazy lines on the magazine insert. So, there will definitely be more Burda Style makes in my future.

I hope your New Year has had a strong start. I’m excited about all of the sewing happenings this month – – the Pattern Review Sewing Bee started this week. I’m not participating this year, but I love watching the fun. There should be lots of inspiration there. I’m hoping to make something for Sew Japanese In January, and there’s the Day/Night Dress Challenge coming up next month, hosted by Elizabeth Made This! Lots to look forward to…

Now I understand what car insurance really does, they cover losses mainly out of pocket, reduce risk which covers costs of many, but I have trouble understanding why a company is needed to do this. Lets say on an average a person pays 150/month for coverage. Over time this money adds up. After one were to be in a collision, they are presumably covered, yet a deductible is payed, then they increase the payments. I fail to see the purpose when they are just pretty much using your monthly payments to pay for these fines. Lets say you had a glass jar, and you put 200 a month in there, is the concept not the same? Even if you were to never get into an accident in your lifetime, do you see a dime of your money? I just really want to know if there is a true reason, or purpose for insurance, because I fail to see past it as a scam.

I am a 17 year old boy living in the Northeast of Scotland, one of the most common places for a collision in the whole of the UK. However, I am not in anyway a dangerous driver. My dad has been driving for 50 years and told me he feels very safe while driving with me as a learner, and I always stay within the speed limit, with the exception of if I don't realise I'm doing over the limit. My mum and dad have been saving some money for me for about 10 years, but it's only about 1300, and I don't have any more money apart from that. It's not going to be enough and I have really been let down by the insurance, because that Clio I saw was 600. The lowest quote I managed to find was 1634.70 a year from the Co-Operative Young Driver insurance, and with that you get a device fitted in your car to monitor how you drive, and if you drive within speed limits, and safely, I guess your monthly cost comes down a little bit.
