SO... I was just thinking, let's say hypothetically.. mahiru guren & shinya weren't toxic ca16 was written by a less misogynist author then would you like mahigureshin as like poly ship? It just came in my head as much as I dislike how author wrote them esp mahirus character I still think in alternative setting it might work?? They are kind of catastrophic trio with very poetic themes & victim of fate kinda afterall.
honestly probably yeah. most powerful trio imagineable.
although i actually have no clue what mahiru's personality would be like were she not written by such an author. i think i've read some cool modern AUs in which i really liked her - kickass businesswoman that overworks herself trying to get her little sister out of a difficult situation while simulteanously juggling her relationship with her boyfriend and their shared trophy wife, i think that'd fit her well. "all you do is work :(" "you don't understand i'm doing this for us!!!111!1!1!!1!!!" type of stuff.
i will forever treasure that little snippet of her and shinya making fun of guren together, that was adorable. the way things should've been.

Last night my friend asked me if wanted to go see Taylor Swift in Scotland in June, and I was like “I’m interested” and then she called me and was like we should do it!! And then I was like well what are flights etc? And spoiler it was very expensive (read $3k for 30 hours in Scotland), but last night I was like YOLO.
And her/her husband were like looking up a bunch of flights and options and stuff, but they never presented me any options and stuff? And they are two hours behind me so I said I’m going to bed, let me know what you find in the morning.
Well in the cold light of morning I was like actually…I’m having second thoughts. So I texted her and apparently they booked a nonrefundable hotel and like our plane or train tickets from London to Edinburgh? Which I did not agree to, and was like we’re still in the 24 hour window for any tickets just cancel those.
So now I feel like an absolute asshole asking for things to be canceled because I didn’t realize she was doing things. I’m just not really in a financial place to just drop $3k??? Like I could figure it out if I really really wanted to and that is a privilege but also ughhhhh I’m not in a place where that is a small amount of money.
And I keep looking at my texts and now I’m interpreting them differently and being like…did I lead her on??? But I was expecting them to like give me options on like what flight and what hotel and stuff??? And I didn’t expect her to book a nonrefundable hotel without asking me.
Anyway, she spent $1.4k on the nonrefundable hotel and maybe I will have to help split that cost with her unless I can talk to her into just going alone or having her husband go or the hotel decides to be merciful.

It is really really really really really interesting to read these old chemistry guides with a knowledge of geology. By functionally ignoring the words and focusing on the reactions that are happening, you can piece together the real minerals despite the translators' struggles for the right word.
Like here, "Zungufr" is clearly "red ????". The translators (there were two translations before this one) likely didn't have a knowledge of mineralogy. From the rest of the text, I'm fairly certain Copper acetate is either Copper Acetate or Copper Nitrate, to be added with (NH)4Cl and Malachite (Hydrated Copper Carbonate). However, the end result via the translator is Cinnabar - which is a theoretically reasonable guess. Natural cinnabar is red, and so is arsenic sulfide. However, there's literally no As or Hg in this equation, which means that the result is the red Copper Oxide mineral, CuO. Cuprite.
Likewise, you have "The Calcination of Lapis Lazuli", which I thought was interesting in the first place, because in the beginning of the text, Al-Razi describes all the reagents. (21) The translator decided to stick with Lapis Lazuli, although seemingly aware that Azurite and Lapis Lazuli are not even close to the same mineral.
However, when you look at the minerals in 21, something doesn't add up. I was already suspicious of the Lapis Lazuli description, but something was clearly wrong in 21. Neither Lapis nor Hematite have copper, or are "oily/vitreous" minerals. Plus, they already described "Iron Oxides" above this point. Which makes it much more likely that "Lapis Lazuli" actually means Azurite, and Hematite is actually describing Sphalerite, (Zn,Fe)S, and Al-Razi prefers the Fe-rich Sphalerite.
This was also supported by his description of several "zinc ore" minerals, but I couldn't find a good description of sphalerite among them. Then I realized that what Al-Razi was really describing were different variations of Zinc Oxides, and separating out Zinc Sulfides.
Talc does NOT glitter. And there's no reason to differentiate "sea-talc" and "mountain-talc". But there would be if you knew there were Fe-Micas and Mg-Micas! (Or even just the straight Al-Mica.)
But to be clear, this is not the fault of the translators!! The fact they got close enough I can recognize the errors and described the mineral well enough I can recognize these reactions are a blessing in and of itself.

I started playing snowbound blood thanks to your recommendation. The mystery novel aspect so far sucks ass (derogatory) (it's not a mystery novel. the mystery is set dressing) and the worldbuilding also sucks ass (complimentary) (everything sucks so much in this planet and i think i haev couvid) and I am slowly getting hints that secily should maybe be on therapy.
Snowbound Blood is a tragedy at its core. In hindsight, emphasizing the mystery elements might have been our bad - this is a character-focused visual novel, and the mystery elements can fall to the wayside in favor of... well. Everything sucks, the world is dying, and the more you play the more the many, many ways in which this world fucking sucks will become evident.
You're going to love meeting Secily's therapist, we think.

you ever watch or listen to something and all of a sudden there’s a whole duology in your head that must be written immediately. anyways: apocalypse fiction anyone? a hint of supernatural worldbuilding and spiritual sensitivity? friends that go through life and death situations? other things that are half formed in my head?
[ image id: a wall of text in times new roman font, with several sections blacked out. it reads:
THE PREMISE
a duology that spans an apocalypse and then the post-apocalypse world.
BOOK ONE follows the apocalyptic event itself and the aftermath. [several lines of blacked out text]
There are two categories of monsters: Soul Stealers and Sun Eaters (commonly collated as suneaters). Soul Eaters are wraiths, humanoid shadows with glowing silver centers where the human heart would be. [wall of blacked out text]. Sun eaters are Soul Stealers monstrous companions. [sentence of blacked out text]
BOOK TWO is set ten years after the apocalypse and the events of book one. It follows a handful of young initiates who begin training to be Seekers/Guards, those who can traverse the wastelands and combat Soul Stealers and Sun Eaters. / end id]
