Random showerthought: did Gio care about the mafia other activities besides drugs? Like the mafia is involved in human trafficking, corruption and shit. I hope Giorno dismantles Passione. Its an inherently bad organization, no matter how much reformed it is. I will be surprised if he doesn’t become corrupt after a while, especially with GER. Maybe Mista and Trish can reign him in.
That’s why I like Don Giovanna: Giorno is more interesting in what we don’t see (after he becomes Don and the series end) than in how he becomes the mafia boss.
If you check my older Giorno analysis posts, I talked about how Giorno is more obsessed with the idea of being a good gangstar, than with the actual work that it contains. To make it short, as a child the only good adult he saw was the mafioso whose life he saved: in return the man gave Giorno protection. Compared to all other adults in his life, that man was reliable and gave Giorno some hope for the future. Being so young, it was deeply imprinted upon Giorno that his place in the world had to be related to being a good mafioso. (It’s a bit similar to Narancia having admiration for Bruno as the only good male adult in his life and  possibly a father figure)
Even for drugs, fans have already pointed out he seemed concerned with drugs for MINORS as opposed to drug use in general. I also think it’s interesting that in the opening sequel of the anime with Giorno walking down the alleys, it’s not clear if Giorno feels bad for these people (Bruno does), or if he’s appalled at how inefficient the mafia has become. I think Giorno craves control, both bc he’s Dio’s son and bc he had no control whatsoever during his childhood. But there’s no point in controlling a crumbling empire: and that’s how Giorno sees Diavolo’s Passione. It’s so inefficient and sickly, bc all the direction is gone. So Giorno wants a better Passione: that could be a stronger and healthier Passione from the point of the organization, but from the point of a citizen that doesn’t mean Giorno will dismantle the mafia.
And human trafficking is a thing Araki didn’t even cover in Vento Aureo; maybe for lack of time or maybe bc it would complicate the story. But I’m sure there’s some female capo in Passione who comes from a past of that sort. But based on the year, human trafficking from Eastern Europe and corruption are a thing in Italy. And laying down on the drugs, Passione will have to be involved in dealing with weapons. And bc Giorno is a smart boy: it’s worth buying politicians for future days, aka lobbying. And wouldn’t be surprised if Passione becomes involved with political assassinations or coups (he can easily offer this service to foreign leaders thus expanding control to other countries).
Giorno has no choice but to become corrupted, bc anyone does in that line of work. He has already killed people and done questionable things. He can’t just go back to normal society; no one can even someone as soft and kind as Narancia. A lot of artists have caught up onto this, drawing Don Giovanna in lavish outfits and having him live in a castle of some sort. Any power corrupts and even Jonathan comes across as insensitive at times, bc he’s a rich kid and doesn’t understand how a poor abused kid like Dio can suffer (early one child Jonathan).
I also think metaphorically Vento is a story about Dio winning: if Giorno has two sides to him, Dio won over Jonathan by the end of Vento. But I think Giorno is more efficient than Dio; Dio became side-tracked with his Jonathan obsession and wasted immortality. Giorno on the other hand is very focused on what he wants, which is more power. I think GER seals his corruption: “the ending is no ending-- that’s the ending”. You can have infinite greed that way, which is a very Dioish thing. And Giorno is beyond corruption at this point- he has become power itself.
Will Passione become better under Giorno? Definitely. Passione as an organism will get healthier and stronger: Giorno will know how to control drugs and weapons so that it doesn’t get to the point of society collapsing (otherwise there’s no game to play if everything is gone). He will probably make the members happier too: Giorno would pay his version of La Squadra handsomely: you need loyal man and any price is worthy paying so they don’t turn against you. Will Passione get dismantled? No.
I think Giorno’s goal is to create a symbiotic Passione: one that can co-exist with the government and law, not of just Italy but different countries. So not a white and dark Passione, but in the middle. This “grey” version of Passione can do good things at times: probably kill off some terrorist or serial killer; do all it can to avoid ww3 maybe, also a lot of charity donations to art and science.
But at the same time, for all the good it can do, Passione is not driven by kindness but by its need to survive, and with Giorno in charge. So if Giorno has to take out a corrupt president it’s bc he thinks too much trouble in the world will topple the stability and balance Giorno has achieved so far. It’s a bit like the dark side: too much on the dark side and the narrative has to switch to the light to to maintain the balance. But too much light and the dark side comes back stronger (hence Passione’s weapons and drugs and any shady activity is still ongoing in perfect balance with good things like charity, etc).
*
I like Mista and Trish, but I don’t think they can have any real influence over Giorno in changing his ways. No one ever did: all characters ended up doing what Giorno wanted them to do from the very beginning. It is true Mista showed Giorno how to not mindlessly sacrifice (the entire resolve thing in Ghiaccio’s fight). But it all still fit in Giorno’s plan of becoming Don. The big picture is what Giorno wanted all along-- if he sees a better idea of how to achieve it he will listen and change (he’s a smart guy). But no one can make Giorno deviate from his big goal, only maybe change some minor details.
I keep joking Giorno is the real villain of Vento, or am I joking?

Because I mentioned I was going to eventually get rid of my old shower curtain, my mom surprised me and got me an Edward Gorey one. Gashlycrumb Tinies!
One of the recent ghost books on ghost I read mostly just (intentionally or not) taught me how to fake spooky sh*t at seances but in the entry on mirrors it mentioned looking into one at night was considered bad luck. But that’s kind of hard to avoid. I already knew using candlelight to look into a mirror is considered to be unlucky but I think a cellphone’s flashlight doesn’t count. Anyway, going to the bathroom at night is going to be spookier. :D
Life’s been kind of hectic lately, mostly due to things outside of my control. I want to get a new job this summer. And fix my sleeping schedule. I’ve been getting stress dreams again for the first time in a while. I don’t count a bad dream as a nightmare unless I wake up terrified but it still sucks. Going to ask my doctor if melatonin is a good idea.
My dog (see above) had a nasty cough after getting knocked out for some dental surgery, which is supposed to be normal, but it lasted for a while so we took her to the vet. And it turns out that the reason she was scratching on my door every night to be let outside was because of a UTI. She’s doing better now.
Mm, there’s a lot more things to talk about but I’ll save that for another post.
The Dark Knight: There was a scene where a bunch of men got their uniforms stolen and they were tied up and g*gged. I watched the trilogy out of order. To be honest, I get kind of bored watching these but the villains are cool. Bane’s darling but now that I’ve seen Venom I prefer Eddie Brock. Jonathan Crane is kind of cute, too.
Now I finally get why people like the Joker so much. He gives not a single f*ck. So many things could go wrong at any moment during his plans, he relies so much on luck, but he has so much confidence. I feel like if tried to slide down a hill of money I would hurt myself. The best scene was the Joker walking quickly out and away from the hospital. Also, the bank heist in the beginning.
Crimson Peak started to get good when Edith and Lucille were having the butterfly discussion and ended up being better paced than I thought it would be. But after Carter got his head smashed in, I’m not sure why Edith would go with Thomas after that.
Gothic horror is actually fun to learn about in school because the genre’s progenitors would probably be into yandere and monster f*cking. It’s like... In the first art history class I took, we were looking at Renaissance paintings and there was a fair amount of stuff with a de*th and the maiden motif. The modern equivalent would be a lot of metal album covers.
Brain Damage: I was looking for infestation movies and I’m so glad I stumbled upon this. Not because it’s particularly good but ‘cause the MC is super cute. Basically the talking leechy thing pumps Brian full of an addictive fluid through the the back of his neck and they have a faux symbiotic relationship where Aylmer gorily eats other people’s brains.
There was a scene where Brian’s brother answers the phone lying on his stomach in his und*rwear. Followed by a scene where Brian takes his pants off and you see his t*sh. Also a very brief M/F/M thr*some dream that gets gruesome real quick.
The Stuff: If you’re into The Blob, you’ll probably like this. The mode of killing is a bit different. Stuff’s alive and controls people from the inside.
A Cure for Wellness: Shout out to his movie for showing n*ked/scantily clad old people without getting weird about it. Within the first half hour I was surprised when it didn’t do well at the box office. The visuals draw you in but it was probably too long and could have been better. I wasn’t expecting to it get kind of fantastical. It’s got existentialism, surrealism, mystery... Uhhhh... I’m not sure whether to classify it as fantasy or sci fi.
Venom: Hits so many k*nks. Dan’s cute, Anne has good taste in men. Carlton Drake gets symbioted. Actually, I’m not sure if he or Eddie is sexier. The first guy to get possessed in the Eminem video is also cute. Best line is Venom saying, “Look at her. She has no idea we are going to get her back.” The Rorschach-like ending credits were cool.
Sleepaway Camp: Before I watched this, I already knew the ending. Sort of. To be honest, I expected “Angela” to be an offensive portrayal of a trans woman but the situation was more like David Reimer, minus g*nital m*tilation. The ending itself... Aunt Martha may not have gone on a murder spree but she’s the scariest person in the film. Otherwise I wouldn’t have said there’s anything terribly special about this film. Based on the synopsis of the sequel, I’m probably not going to watch the rest of the franchise.
Hell Fest: Pretty typical modern slasher but the atmosphere is great. It was also funny. I’m just gonna use bullet points for this.
“You know what? He deserves at least some dignity after death.” “Let’s give him a b*ner.”
When asked if he mentioned something about having a f*tish for p*ddles, Gavin answers, “I have never said that in my entire life.”
Why did Asher get hotter while he was struggling and getting stabbed in the eyeball?
It took me a minute to recognize Tony Todd. Sad.
Men in Black II: At no point in the film did Serleena, who is capable of transformation and has tentacles, transform into a male und*rwear model. :’(
Fullmetal Alchemist: (The manga.) A military fantasy that raises some good questions about ethics. And dat solar aesthetic. The chimera designs were so cool. Envy is a cruel, skimpily dressed shapeshifter with a grotesque “true form” and Lin gets willingly possessed by Greed. So that’s right up my alley.
Break My Heart 1,000 Times: Good time to read this. It takes place in February. Read this because I Still See You has Richard Harmon. The book started off decently but I didn’t like the protagonist’s behavior near the end of part three. And there’s some sexism. Like hysterically slapping her love interest and blaming herself for not having any weapons in her room because she’s a girl. Seriously, I keep a bigass King James Bible on my nightstand. If anyone breaks in, they’re getting brained by the Good Book. Or a lamp. Or the nightstand itself. But hopefully my dog would maul an intruder first.
Christine: Wasn’t really into it but you might be if you’re into corruption, e.g. a nerdy guy becoming slightly more physically appealing jerk*ss.
The 100: I got teary-eyed when Clarke and Lexa were saying goodbye and then the latter accidentally gets short. Poor Murphy can’t catch a break, as usual. Started season four the other day.
Hostel: DUMB REASON TO GO “OUT OF BOUNDS”, FELLAS.
Going into this, I thought I’d like Jay Hernandez’s character the most but then I found the other guys cuter until the end then I really liked Paxton. Weirdly enough, I found Alexei cute. There’s decent whump but I’m not into v*mit.
I think I saw an ad with the guy who tortured Paxton when I was in elementary school but I mistook it for something from one of the Saw movies. This was obviously before I had any interest in watching these kinds of movies. XD
Songs of the Day: I’ve been listening to a lot of Dead inside the Chrysalis/Dedderz lately... I’m crushing on Manek Deboto. He should be the one wearing a th*ng in the She’s So Rad music vid! If they ever do  “He’s So Rad” they should include Elm Street’s Jesse Walsh and Brian from Brain Damage...

Dream Drop Distance: The World That Never Was/End Game
- Look who's back with a brand spanking new theme song.
- And this is why I enjoy Gothic!Dick Roman, he's nice enough to walk us through his entire plan. There'll be no getting confused tonight.
- That move I just did there? Took hours of practice, but the look on the players face? Totally worth it.
- I don't like this Kingdom Hearts: VR experience game.
- Oh boy, looks like Sora's heart is kind of going through a breakdown.
- It's ok Sora, she's used to being forgotten.
- Hey, look who's here just for the paycheck.
- (Roxas thinking Sora is the more important of the two) And honestly, I kind of wish it was the other way around.
- (Roxas deserving his own self and identity) A sentiment that people are still rejecting to this day.
- That's right Sora, listen to the black sky, don't go chasing your dreams, wait until they come to you.
- I don't know if this game is trying to out-mindfuck the previous games but it sure is succeeding
- And in one cutscene, a good chunk of pre-2012 fanfic suddenly becomes hilarious in hindsight.
- (Why lie to the original Organization) Easy, for the lulz.
- Well at least this story is open about it's whole assimilation plot rather than trying to be vague about it like Mass Effect was.
- Oh no, you've angered Dick Roman, now you've really fucked up.
- Oh shit, he's going all Magneto on your ass.
- I would love if the game just ended there. Sora has been taken by the Darkness, his Heart has been protected by Ventus and we have to wait until the next game to see how he gets saved. It would have gone totally "Infinity War" on us and I would have been happy.
- But sadly no, now we get Riku's little journey.
- (Anti-Black Coat) And winner for creepiest fucking thing in this entire series...this guy.
- Well I guess it's better than belonging to the fattest part of my ass.
- Something tells me that Nomura saw Inception before writing the plot of this game.
- (The Dream Eaters helping Riku get to the castle) Well that just ruined the mood
- I know this place. It brings back memories.
- Organization XIII-2
- (In Mickey voice) It's fine now. Why? Because I am here!
- I guess it was kind of silly to use time powers against a Chronomancer.
- I'm starting to wonder if the Mysterious Figure we fight in Birth By Sleep wasn't /this/ version of Xehanort but a slightly older one, one who existed between this version and Ansem. Because while this Young Xehanort can use the same time powers, he's not nearly as overkill with them as he was in BBS. So maybe we fought a more experienced version of him.
- Mad Watch! There's only one way to stop a mad watch.
- Two days slow, that’s what it is.
- Old Man Xehanort, back from the dead.
- Fuck, now's not the time for a big damn heroes moment. This is all meant to end on a downer note.
- (Lea has the worst timing) Yes, the worst!
- Well, everyone else is here. Why not, let's bring these guys in too. Maybe Pence and Olette will join us in a few minutes.
- I thought it was Muriel
- Welcome to Sora's Heart, the happiest place not on this Earth.  Please be aware that in the interest of quality, your journey may be recorded  If you know your party’s Heart, please call for it now  For Roxas, press 1  For Xion, press 2  For Ventus, press 3  For Vantias, press 4  To repeat this menu at any time, press 5
- So now it comes down to this, who will win, a former asshat or one inky boi.
- I guess we'll call this one Symbiote!Sora or possibly Symbiote!Ventus, it's a bit hard to tell.
- And the winner is, the asshat.
- He is pure pureness in it's purest form.
- So does that mean that between the events of Chain of Memories, right up until the end of KH2, Ansem never knew Riku by name?
- No, it's drink your /goddamn/ tea. Get it right. You of all people should know better.
- All good questions that won't get answered I'm sure.
- Yeah Donald, why don't you just shut the fuck up for once?
- Called it
- But that wouldn't be very "Dark Rescue" of you.
- And that's probably the biggest twist in the game.
- The more I think about this game, the more I can see how it could have been greater and more sinister and unsettling, especially considering the end. The general plot seems to be about breaking Sora down mentally while lifting Riku up and showing him how much of a hero he really can be. This is sort of reflected in the stories of each world but falls short with the bosses. I think the only time they get it right is during one of the few actual Disney villain fights with Sora against Rinzler. Imagine if Traverse Town worked to show Sora that not everyone who works with him is going to help him, Hunchback could have shown him that through Frollo, not everything that's considered "morally right" is actually good. They get it right with The Grid by having both something (the world) and someone (Tron) that he developed a connection to being corrupted and twisted. Prankster's Paradise would have been the idea of Sora's child-like personality being perverted and a dark take on the concept of childish innocence. The Musketeers comes across like a breather episode when you think about it, it's not too harsh and it does drive the point home that Riku is more of a hero than he believes he is. The Fantasia world seems to be a culmination of it all and as others have pointed out, the symbolism of Sora and Riku's worlds reflect their characterization; Sora goes from being in the clouds, in a heavenly location to the ground below while Riku goes from a dark, secluded wooded area into the open, beautiful snowy night (the music helps this even more) and then they just drop all sense of subtlety and have him fight the Devil. You could even view the final bosses that Sora and Riku fight as more of this, Sora fights Xemnas (and to a lesser degree Xigbar/Braig) while Riku fights the Anti-Black Coat, Ansem, Xehanort and finally "Sora". With Sora's battle, he faces against two characters who were also corrupted by Xehanort, Terra and Braig (although how evil Braig was to begin with is up for debate) and in fighting Xemnas, Sora becomes corrupted himself (or at least is placed on the edge and saved at the last possible second) while Riku's battles are him fighting manifestations of corrupted Darkness and Xehanort himself in a series of sequences that feel like Riku is finally dealing with his inner demons. The battle with "Sora" at the end could even be seen as a reflection of the Riku fight in KH1.
