Bisexuality is the attraction to more than one gender (or, the attraction to two more genders.) Many bisexuals define themselves different from one another, this is what bisexual fluidity is all about
It is extremely important to have representation for different types of bisexuality. Let’s talk about the many, many different, and valid, definitions and experiences.
Valid types of bisexuality:
- The attraction to two genders with a preference
- The attraction to two genders with no preference
- The attraction to more than two, and not all,
genders with preference
- The attraction to more than two, and not all,
genders with no preference
- The attraction to all genders with preference
- The attraction to people regardless of their gender
- Any other definition which fits into the definition of “the attraction to more than one gender”
It is also important to mention that bisexuality is NOT in any way transphobic, non binary exclusive, nor is it the “less inclusive version,” of anything else. Historically, bisexuality has been inclusive of all people, and has been a fluid experience for many. It has also never been limited to the gender binary.
Speaking as someone who is bisexual, biphobia is still extremely prevalent in society, and even within the lgbtq+ community itself. I encourage everyone to challenge their own ideas during #BiWeek, and to make the effort to not push misconceptions onto others (especially not when you are already being met with the correct info, but struggling to accept that it is correct…) Bisexual folks know their identities and experience better than you could know them, accepting bisexual identities as fluid and valid is quite literally the bare minimum that one can do for our community, but it is of course also a good start into bi activism and understanding bisexuality.
I am someone who is bisexual and attracted to people regardless of gender. Whilst I love bi visibility, it does have a downside for many people who are like me. We are often silenced, we are often harassed for who we are because people can not move past their preconceived ideas of who we should be. Bisexuals do not exist for your comfort, and should not be forced into changing labels for your comfort. If this sounds like it is attacking you, then I challenge YOU to challenge your ideas and to truly listen to bisexuals in the future. Stop attacking bi people, and stop trying to force new labels on them. Differences in experience between bi folks is exactly what the bi manifesto means when referring to bisexual fluidity, and it is what I am meaning now when speaking about the fluidity. Bisexual fluidity is BEAUTIFUL and shouldn’t be silenced.
Seeing as it is bisexual visibility day, please remember to amplify the voices of bi creators : oftentimes, our voices are silenced in conversations about our own identities. Whilst it is important for people to educate others on bisexuality, our voices should be made available when speaking on our own identities. Please also make an effort to not speak over us.
If you are interested in reading more of my work as a bisexual activist, please see my guides entitled “Bisexuality,” in which I have a collection of over 40 posts on the matter, including many posts that contain important pieces of bi history. If you have a moment, please take the time to read at least ONE of these posts, you may learn something new and important. Also, see accounts such as being_lgbt & thedailyqueers for some good posts on bisexuality. (Please share any other resources below as well!)
To any bisexual folks reading this:
YOU ARE VALID
YOU ARE LOVED
YOU ARE ENOUGH
