Me! Hi!

So first things first, what is this blog? Despite this name, it's actually Not a Shadowheart exclusive BG3 blog. The name is just a play on a joke I made with some friends that there is a DEEP lack of Dark Justiciar Shadowheart and Dark/Jealous/Possessive content for her. While I, of course, get and love our precious, wholesome Selunite baby, there's a lot of untapped potential for her Sharran Side. There's already a whole post I made on why I think you can definitely pull off a Yandere/Obsessive Shadowheart if you're interested. Can find that post Here, if you're interested.

ALRIGHT PUT DOWN THE PITCHFORKS I'M JUST BEING TRANSPARENT HERE.

But I've always had a weakness for dark romance, yandere content, obsessive/possessive/jealous content, and Ascended!Astarion has that in SPADES. So does Sharran!Shadowheart and DarkJusticiar!Shadowheart just saying.

Hence why the profile picture and banner feature Astarion and Shadowheart. This blog is for both of them, as I simp both.

Now not to come across condescending or anything, I know most people are aware what a yandere is. But just in case there are some newbies/uninitiated in this sacred, unholy character trope. Never want people to feel awkward or unwelcome or even ashamed they don't know something.

There are many other tropes that tend to be interwoven into a yandere. It's hardly ever their only trait. You can learn the rest by reading that, and your own research.

Look, I may be a Spawn!Astarion simp but I'm very staunch in my belief.

We can all enjoy ascended Astarion or Obsessive Shadowheart or whoever else you want to make a dark character. We can, because we can all acknowledge that no one in a healthy frame of mind would actually want to be with a Yandere in real life. But here, in text and words, we can enjoy it for what it is. A fantasy. I have a partner (hi babe) who is the complete antithesis of a yandere. I am actively writing a double Yandere electric boogaloo fic on AO3. Which they actively read and I talk about often. Doesn't change that I want a healthy relationship. And if I ever got a hint that they were recreating the scenes I was writing, I would ***SPOILERS*** drop faster than Shadowheart's parents when she kills them that's dark and I'm not sorry nor feel bad for it ***END SPOILERS**

Tian Guan Ci Fu

where is it and what is it

it’s a chinese webnovel by mxtx, the same author who did untamed; it exists as a webnovel, finished and kindly translated here, the manhwa, the donghua (animated adaptation) happening right now, and there’s a live action adaptation in plans, directed by the same guy who did untamed. the donghua is gorgeous, the adaptation i’m unsure about but prepared to be hopeful, the manhwa seems to be very pretty. but all the adaptations only cover the very beginning of the novel for now, so i went ahead and read the novel, and i have no regrets. it helps that the translation is very good - not without awkward translatorese, but it has consistent and engaging flow and style, and it’s also pretty good at conveying mxtx’s humor without awkwardness. it reads pretty well.

what’s it about?

the world is split into two parts: mortals and various ghosts and demons and entities share the land, while ‘heaven officials’, aka gods, live in the heavenly kingdom in the sky. pretty much anybody can become a god if they do something really heroic or memorable and/or cultivate (meditation, training, virtuous behavior) really hard. when above, the gods rule their domains and fulfill their believers’ wishes; they work sort of like pratchettian gods, dependent on their followers’ beliefs and getting influenced by them. heavens are strictly hierarchical, with their own economy and pecking order, and the gods aren’t particularly sinless or benevolent; mostly it’s a question of scale.

our hero, xie lian, is a prince of a prosperous kingdom who’s been on a fast track to ascension for most of his very short life; he’s talented, he’s virtuous, he’s kind, he’s strong, and his only peculiar flaw is (somehow naive, but well-meaning) obsession with equality and value of human lives and so on. he becomes a god, unexpectedly, at seventeen, after slaying one especially dangerous god, and rises in heaven at the peak of his faith, influence and happiness.

…and then he finds out about drought and incipient trouble in his own kingdom, and, being a young and righteous god too close to his mortality, eschews heavens and returns to save everybody. it, to put it lightly, does not go well. at all. in fact, it goes catastrophically wrong, and, having lost everything, xie lian ascends again, only to get into a fight with the heavenly emperor, and get banished again, this time for good. he roams the mortal lands for next eight hundred of very lonely, luckless and hard years, technically immortal but not invincible, with his powers and his luck stripped away, and leans to make do, eking out a living as a scrap collector. his temples are desecrated, his name is forgotten, his kingdom is long gone, and - well. so it goes.

so it goes! until one day, to everybody’s great surprise, he ascends once again: a humble, gentle, immune to embarrassment, unflappable man, an embarrassment to heavens, a 'laughingstock of three realms’ who just wants to be left well enough alone. he’s Tired.

instead of rest, he gets sent to investigate a dangerous ghost stealing brides who pass through its mountain, and there, during the course of the interrogation, has his first (he thinks) meeting with a terrifying, old-powerful and vengeful ghost king named hua cheng, who likes to terrorize heavens from time to time. but said ghost king seems to be very benevolent and very interested in helping xie lian, and xie lian is pretty instantly smitten… with knowing what’s the cause of such interest.

…and meanwhile, in the beginning, there'was an unlucky boy, born under the worst stars, whom xie lian saved from falling once, while still mortal, and promptly lost track of. a lot of things happened to this boy, who wanted to be the most devoted worshipper to xie lian the god of the sword and the flower. as one does, you know.

that’s the beginning! from there on: investigations, heavenly secrets, old friends and enemies and acquaintances, thematic parallels, old tragedies, more pining than you can shake a stick at, grand acts of love.

is it good?

it’s very, very good. it’s the first fantasy cnovel i read (aside from the hilarious one about a guy traveling back in his own timeline and becoming a sugar baby to a mafia boss, which was in a very different league), so i don’t know which things are baseline and which things are unique, but it had a very solid foundation: ambitious multilevel, multi-timeline plot coming together in the end both events- and emotions-wise, beautifully iddy main relationship, maybe multifaceted characters who change and grow and clash together in fun ways, a clear and heartfelt understanding of its own core themes.

it’s also, unexpectedly, very funny, in this visual, slapsticky, begs-to-be-adapted way - i found myself laughing out loud over it a lot of times, and it possesses this gift of swerve between understated but earnest emotions and all-out jokes that i associate with… a bit of prattchett and a bit of gintama, honestly. take it as you will.

(oh my god the mecha. i will laugh over this one until i die.)

it also made me cry several times; granted, it’s not like it’s this time, but those were very heartfelt tears.

and the main duo?

first let me say that xie lian was lifted out, wholesale, out of my deepest character preferences. he fell really, really far, and did some bad things, and some very horrible things were done to him, and by the time we meet him he went through everything and achieved this effortless kind of traumatized, humble, accepting, wryly self-deprecating, utterly competent chill that makes a character incredibly appealing to me. he’s kind, and he’s sweet, and he’s gotten any possible embarrassment at least a couple of centuries ago, and he kinda made peace with himself and kinda didn’t. i love him.

and, thankfully for me, hua cheng, the ghost king, loves him a whole damn lot, a ridiculous amount, an epic, over-the-lifetimes, life-shattering amount, and he’s a terrifying presence to everybody else and a shy, protective, sweet dork to xie lian, and every time they’re together on page my entire heart is just. it’s AMAZING. he’s a great combination of playing the obsessive protective yandere stalker-lover trope straight and putting it on its head, by making hua cheng not just revere but respect xie lian, in all his good and bad decisions.

they are just so - good for each other, holy shit. they get each other so well. they’re the best ever power team. i love them.

(the rest of canon is various character reenacting “really? in front of my salad?” meme at them. it’s hysterical, and it’s the best. everybody teams up to tell xie lian that his boyfriend is Problematic way, way before xie lian clues into the fact that he does have a boyfriend, and he’s having none of it. i love it.)

and the themes?

okay, so. roughly half of this novel is ridiculous iddy pining, and a fourth of it is various tropes (off the top of my head: soulbond, sex pollen, body switch, de-age, various shades of identity porn… crossdressing…) played very shamelessly. but it also really benefits from having an overarching set of ethical questions, and while it deals with them a bit shounen-style, it still deals with them, and it makes the whole text fresh, and sweet, and bold.

is it possible to save everybody? should you try to save everybody? if you lack the powers to back your convictions, does it make you complicit? when is it possible to stop the cycle of suffering, what can you do if you want to but can’t? if you tried and people you failed turned on you, whose fault it is, where does the blame stop?

Detailed spoilers begin from here, and i would REALLY advise to stay unspoiled, because the domino reveals are very fun

i loved the various ways the novel sets all those pieces up and then overturns them and then returns to them. xie lian wanted to save everybody and it was arrogant naivete of an untried, untested, privileged young man who never had a real challenge before; his presence made things escalate quicker, and yet everybody around him pretended it was his attempt to make things better that ruined everything, and not a combination of factors outside of his control. and yet he accepts the blame, because it dovetails with his shame at not having enough powers to back his intent up; and yet his triumph over bai wuxian is that he doesn’t, after all, renege on his initial drive to help people.

my most favorite part of this novel is that its turning point, the lynchpin of the whole novel, the moment that keeps xie lian’s soul and safety intact, is not his personal purity and drive; it’s not even hua cheng’s devotion and sacrificial love. it’s just a moment of little, grudging, human kindness from a little, petty, rude man whom the history will sweep away soon. the bamboo hat in the rain. the rest of the plot keeps twisting and turning and coming back to itself, but this? this was unquestionably, beautifully clear, and i loved it. it’s never about the gods, it’s all down to - fallen human is human, ascended human is human, and human is not some state, virtuous or sinful, you get stuck with - it’s a multitude of choices, and there’s never a final one.

and incoherent spoilery screaming for people who read it already

oh my god i had SO MUCH FUN. i’ve been flailing on meme for days, because somebody just finished reading there too, and i’m still bursting with ALL THE FEELS. ruoye origins oh my god! that hat! jin wu’s backstory and ultimate end! e-ming’s praise kink! pei ming’s little shippery 'hoho’! hua cheng’s horribly handwritten stick and poke tattoo of xie lian’s name! the lanteeeeeeeeeeeeerns. feng xin and mu qing on the bridge, making up with each other and with xie lian! hua cheng trying to explain to xie lian that his habit of using himself as bait and pincushion at any given moment is deeply emotionally upsetting to him, and succeeding! banyue’s learning from xie lian to be a truly horrible cook! the entire deal with shi qingxuan and he xuan and the wind fan in the end. THE CAVE. THE GIANT MECHA. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and aaaaaaaaaaaaa and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and i am beset, beset by feelings. come scream with me.

15. What is the fanfic you’ve written that you’re most proud of?

Final Girl, just because it was my first time writing a proper ‘horror’ fic and it was a challenging fic to write but i’m really happy with how it turned out :)

there are plenty of fics i’ve abandoned midway through writing them because they just weren’t working for me, but i don’t necessarily think i’ve ever deliberately stopped myself from writing something

outside of the whole ‘yandere’ thing, i like writing semi-canon for haikyuu because volleyball players are super fun to write - though au’s have always been a soft spot of mine. with bnha though, i think i find it easier to stick to a quirkless au, or if i do set it in the canon universe then to use it more as a backdrop and only refer to it vaguely - idk writing canon-ish bnha makes me nervous for some reason

oh this one’s easy - Blindsided and Outrunning Fate - both i was almost 100% were gonna flop big time and i would have to delete this blog out of shame but they ended up being the most popular fics i have? idk why

smut. it takes me ages, i always feel self conscious about it and every time i leave a fic just on the verge of sex happening y’all come and yell at me for more so... that’s 2021′s pet project :)

31. What was the development process of [Fanfic Name] like?

Home is one of my most underrated fics i think (am i allowed to say that? sdfghjkl) but it’s actually one of my faves. i’d been wanting to write timeskip pro oikawa for a long, long time and i also wanted to write a stockholm-ish fic for a while as well. it initially evolved from me wanting to write about oikawa railing the reader while he was high off of coke (which is still sort of implied in the fic) to something with a bit more turmoil and feelings - i love the idea of oikawa as a yandere who still wants to parade his trophy wife around - you’re not chained to the bed, he doesn’t abuse you at every chance, you still have the tiniest amount of freedoms, but you’re trapped all the same and you know he won’t ever let you go. and it didn’t necessarily start as a kidnapping, but a toxic relationship you couldn’t leave, and it’s about the isolation that’s forced upon you, the dependency you have (the initial love that never quite went away) and i wanted to add in the storm and the sex to kind of highlight the reader’s own angst and warring emotions and ugh... i just love that fic.

2. What character(s) do you find the most difficult to write for? Why?

for bnha it’s most of them lol - but bakugou and shiggy were particularly tough to write because i didn’t want to make them too one-dimensional

for haikyuu - sakusa and ushijima mostly because again i worry about making them flat and weird i guess?

11. How would you describe your style? (Character/emotion/action-driven, etc)

i think a lot of my fics are emotionally driven? or at least that’s how i try to write them? i’m not great with action scenes or smut, but i like getting into the characters (and the reader’s i guess too) headspace, it’s always fun - especially when i’m writing from the pov of the yandere

Fun with the DBH character + fun tropes! Requests are open, though, if you want me to expand on, or write more from any of these ideas. Obviously NSFW below the cut so read at your own digression.

Connor

Surprisingly gentle when he is In the Mood. No more aggressive, just a bit more physically close is all. Rubbing his body up against yours, loving touches, a kiss on the cheek. The sort of things most people would brush off, but from Connor, you know he must want something here.

The more an more headed he becomes, the more possessive, like more than either of you would’ve expected. It’s hard for him not to get extra handsy here and feel an exquisite sense of power holding you in his bed.

Luther

Even though he’s pretty quiet during sex, all things considered, he’s definitely the kind of guy who would get extra loud the closer he gets to come. Usually in the form of low grunts and growls.

He would absolutely wreck you if you allowed him to. As in, Simon would love to just tease you and wind you up for hours without giving you a break, and until your unable to do anything but follow his command.

While you might expect someone like him to lean more on the side of subbing or something like that, you might actually be surprised at how naturally he takes to the role of a dom. Something about the stress of the leaders of Jericho breathing down his neck all the time leaves the man with a need to feel in control every now and then.

One of the quietest during sex. You really won’t hear much out of his mouth, especially if it’s occupied.

Essential to know Nines possesses an excellent memory. He’s the one to remember all the positions which leave you the most desperate and needy, and he absolutely will use that against you.

My favorite yandere trope that is pretty rare is a calculating guy that mc never realizes is a yandere. A guy that will allow for risk and damage to anything, including the love interest, as long as he gets results, to isolate love interest or create a strong dependency or just get married. You’re right, I don’tsee this type of yandere a lot. Which isa shame, because I find it BRILLIANT. Ilove this type you’re describing here, and honestly I’d say it’s a pretty highdanger level yandere.

While I’m more partialto yanderes that reveal themselves to the love interest, that’s more to get…the“theatrics” (where the S/O then becomes resistant and/or afraid). But your yandere I see more as the top notchkind of villain that is left unchecked could get away with SO much more.

As fun as it is to seea yandere who either can’t hold back their obsessive tendencies in front ofothers (including their love interest) or being so delusional that they try toconvince others “they’re right,” there’s a lot more power a yandere will holdif they keep their actions a secret. Ifno one knows it’s them pulling the strings behind the scene, others will beless effective at opposing them. Thissounds dumb stating the obvious but…the villains are often “winning” up untilthey finally get caught.

This particularyandere you described is even more dangerous not only because they are SMARTenough to manipulate his surroundings and people without getting caught (orkeep a low profile on possible violent tendencies), but because they will crossover more lines for the sake of getting what they want. I’ve said this before, but there aredefinitely yandere who don’t hold back from knowingly hurting (physically orpsychologically) their love interest. Ilove those kinds of yandere because it shows this deeper level of depravitywhere they refuse to let even their own love interest become an obstacle whilsttrying to obtain them. Now this yanderecould still indeed be reluctant about hurting their love interest, and savesuch acts for when they deem it either “necessary” or “advantageous” to havetheir S/O fall into their hands. Butbeing “reluctant to hurt them” and “avoiding hurting them” are two differentmentalities that say a lot about a yandere’s level of crazy.

I really like thatidea about the baby trapping too. Theyandere could either have this planned withor without consent of the love interest. With consent could obviously mean they decide to have the baby togetherbecause they are already in a relationship (or married). If the yandere isn’t married yet to the S/O,or maybe not even the main squeeze yet of the love interest, they could get alittle more sneaky if they’ve already at least established themselves assomeone with a close relationship to their S/O. One night, the two decide to have sex (casually, to relieve stress,could be multiple reasons). Even if thelove interest wasn’t planning on getting pregnant, all the yandere has to do issay…swap out the S/O’s birth control pills with a placebo without them knowing…maybeeven get the S/O a little drunk one night to make them a little lesscareful. This is truly diabolical. But even worse is a yandere who well… decidesto take the REALLY dark path to impregnate the love interest. The S/O just can’t know it’s the yandere onone dark night. This is more terrifyingand sinister. This would REALLY getpeople to see that this is a villain character type.

Going even further andsaying the yandere will find a way to abort a rival’s child from the loveinterest; Holy cow that’s wicked, and I love the idea! It’s unfortunate to say this…but there’s aLOT of ways a miscarriage can occur. Sothis is completely possible for someone with medical expertise to cause such adevastating event. And again, anexcellent way to display how dark and depraved this yandere is. Many females have natural motherly instincts,and feel more connected to their children for the simple fact that they end up growingthe baby inside them for 9 months (btw no I’m not saying fathers can’t feel thesame, or even greater, affection towards their children because they don’t havea womb :P). The love interest would beDEVASTED if they lost their child before birth. The fact that the yandere would do this to them is simply unspeakable.

But you know me, Ilove my yanderes as villains, so I would eat this type right up! Actually one of the best parts I think aboutthis yandere you described…is that despite how high of a danger level it wouldbe, you don’t have to put this kind in anything incredibly graphic or Mrated. It depends on what kind of actsof manipulation they perform (or at least what they do in the shadows withoutthe love interest’s knowledge), but you could TOTALLY put this into even alighter story and still keep the character menacing. Think about it, this yandere is alreadyincredibly dark simply by portraying how few boundaries they have. Their potential alone for evil will make thema frightening villain.

Now just in case I getany readers here who are more fans of redeemed yanderes or yanderes thatgenuinely fall in love and live happily ever after with their S/O, I will saythat with this particular yandere stated it’s not IMPOSSIBLE to have this turnout like that…but it will be incredibly difficult.

If no one figures outthe yandere is the evil behind the scenes, no one can confront themdirectly. That means the yandere issimply left to their own devices and thoughts. And if it’s not been clearly established already, yanderes have a formof lovesickness that they can’t always tell can be bad. And if this particular yandere is NOT afraidto put even their love interest in harm’s way, that’s a sign that they are farless likely to feeling remorse for their actions as long as they “win” in theend. They’d have to realize themselvesthat what they’re doing is wrong, but their normal thinking wouldn’t allowthis. They’d need some REALLY heavyoutside influence that finally gets them to flip the switch saying “This iswrong. I shouldn’t be doing this.” We don’t like yanderes because they throw uptheir hands and give up at the drop of a hat. They’re persistent.

Who knows, perhapsonce this yandere gets the love of their live love, they settle down togetherand live a very peaceful lifestyle afterwards. With the love interest never even knowing how they came to be pulled inas well. The question is…how much damageand blood did the yandere shed on the path to their “happy ending?”
