PLUS, i played the free demo for this indie otome-esque game on steam called homicipher, and i am begging for the release of the first chapter, idk if any of you have played it, but i am way too addicted for having only played like half an hour of it. anyway lolol, enjoy!!

＃ HYUN (ZEN) !! ♡

Hyun, who buys bouquets of flowers every now and again on his way back home from rehearsals. He does his best to match the colors to your needs, —yellow on sad days in hopes they might lift your spirits, blue when you’re frustrated so that it might calm you down, etc.. They always smell so sweet, and you cherish them deeply. They always live longer than they typically should as a result of how well you care for them, and he loves to see the bashful smile tug at your lips as you accept them gracefully, even if you always tell him that he “really shouldn’t have” or that he “didn’t have to.” He does it because he loves you, and he thinks someone as beautiful as you should be presented with something just as gorgeous every now and again (even if he admittedly thinks you’re worlds prettier than flowers could ever be.)

＃ JUMIN !! ♡

Jumin, who writes little notes on the corner of the napkins he rests your coffee or tea on each morning, delicate and elegant handwriting in black ink sinking so perfectly into the ivory material. They’re never the same, always a different expression of his love or his admiration. You like to tear them off and keep them safe in a little box, and you open it up to read them when you’ve had a hard day or when you’re just not feeling your best. He always tells you that you don’t have to keep them, that he won’t be offended if you simply toss them away after you’ve read them and they’ve made you smile, —but you can never bring yourself to do it.

＃ SAEYOUNG (707) !! ♡

Saeyoung, who folds little origamis for you when he gets the chance and leaves them somewhere around for you to find. It started with a tiny paper star he was folding for the heck of it, but you liked it so much that he decided to do it again, and again, and again. So now you have a neat little stash of different animals, shapes, and otherwise cool-looking creations (all of which have silly, blank expressions drawn onto them as faces that really add a sweetness to their personality.) You like to sit and fiddle with them every now and again, just to feel the sharp edges of the crane’s beak against your fingertips or to split the little heart apart and see the “i love you <3” written on the inside.

＃ YOOSUNG !! ♡

Yoosung, who buys sticky notes for his studies but ends up using most of them to leave you little notes with cute messages and silly doodles. He likes to think this is a better usage for them, especially when he watches you spot one out of the corner of his eye, and you hold it in your hands like it’s some kind of love-stricken poetry from a wordsmith he knows he’ll never be. They might be simple and straightforward, but there’s not much room for stanzas of prose on these little post-its, and reminders that you’re doing a good job or that you look cute are so much more than enough.

＃ JAEHEE !! ♡

Jaehee, who bakes you little desserts for you to eat when you get home, often heart-shaped or dusted in romantic colors, —always in your favorite flavors. Cookies with little jam hearts in the center, cupcakes with heart sprinkles and a cream just to your liking filling up the inside; each and every one made with so much love that you can practically taste it on your tongue. There’s no one else she’d rather bake for, and no one else she’d rather spend the rest of her days with. Sometimes words are hard to come by, and she worries she won’t always get it right, but when you kiss her on the cheek before taking a bite of her treats, well. . . She thinks things will be alright anyway.

chapter 19 : this thing was a masterpiece ‘til you tore it all apart

synopsis : anti romantic, college student choi yeonjun who thinks he’s seen everything in a relationship, promising himself that he won’t go through another relationship ever again to prevent himself from going through another heartbreak. that was until he sees yn, a classmate, chasing his heart. will his walls be enough to scare yn away, or will they continue chasing yeonjun with all they have ?

warnings: cuss words, angst, yeonjun seeming like the bad guy but he’s not :(( i need someone to give jun a hug :(( OH also a mention of committing suicide in one of the tweets..

pink cherry-like leaves fell from the trees, slight spring breeze shaking them off the tree branches, decorating the sidewalk. the sun beginning to set, hiding behind a few clouds, the moon made its presence known. there were certainties in the world: when spring arrived, more flowers bloomed, while others died because they weren’t in season.. when the sun were to rise, the daylight would soon enough lose its shine and be covered the by the moon.

and maybe another certainty, was that you were meant to lose yeonjun.

with everything that yoojung had already tried to do to get the two of you to split up, well it was inevitable. the sad thing was that you were so willing to sacrifice your own mental being to stay with yeonjun, and that wasn’t right. whereas yeonjun was willing to give up his relationship with you to ensure your happiness.. but why was that also not right ? it was the right thing to do, but yeonjun had made such a huge impact in your life that.. well you couldn’t lose him, especially not to yoojung, who had already caused so much harm on his life.

although, you knew. you knew that this little “cheating” scandal was just supposed to act as a way to get you and yeonjun to tussle over it. so if you knew that this was probably apart of yoojung’s whole plan to get you and yeonjun to break up, why did it hurt so much. to be fair, yeonjun’s lips were very much placed on someone else’s.

the boy in the picture was him.

and yoojung just so happened to be the one receiving the kiss.

it hurt. it hurt so badly.

the two of you promised to treat each other so well. to love each other a way that no one else has ever showed the two of you. a love so sweet and powerful that it was bound to stick along forever.

that’s what you planned with yeonjun.

a future so loving and adoring that the only people you would need in your life was each other.

a future where all you needed was to tell each other that you loved one another, and end each day off with cuddles.

so here you were as your head lied on soobin’s shoulder, tiny crystal-like tears escaping your eyes. the tv displaying a random rom-com, but each rom-com came with its unfortunate climax, where the main characters would learn something about the other causing them to call it off.

you never believed life would ever be like a rom-com, after all they were fictional stories that were being told to place hope in its audience or just to get a good giggle out of the viewer. but here you were, planning a movie-like future with yeonjun while facing the many obstacles that it would take to overcome any problems and show yeonjun just how much you truly loved him.

you felt soobin tense up, feeling like maybe it was making you uncomfortable… and it was, but after all you were the one who chose the movie, even after soobin recommended a ton of different action, disney movies.

soobin hated this entire situation, he hated yeonjun.. well maybe he didn’t hate hate him.but he definitely didn’t like him as much as he did before. he for sure did hate yoojung, who was she to try to destroy your relationship. the blame was all on her, she’s the one who cheated on yeonjun so why did you and yeonjun deserve to suffer over an option that she made.

soobin hated one thing the most : seeing you cry.

you were such a warm-hearted person, crying did not look good on you at all. there were times when soobin would come off a bit cold, and you were always volunteering to stay by his side. even a few months ago when beomgyu accidentally rejected soobin, you were there immediately after finding out what happened.

soobin recalled back to his childhood. the way that not all the kids in his neighborhood liked him, specifically because his name was always used as a comparison to the other kids. their mothers always making comments like “you should’ve done better, i heard soobin made a 110.” and while your grades weren’t always perfect, they were close, but even your own mother compared you to soobin, you were always there for him.

soobin remembers one time when he was walking out to get groceries, seeing a bundle of kids in the playground. they were all surrounding you, they continuously attempted to talk behind his back, not knowing that he was right there. however; you happened to shut down each insult, talking about how he isn’t a bad guy, and how it’s rude for them to talk behind his back. he remembers the way that you walked up to him, catching his presence. gifting him your presence to his way to the convenience store. as he asked why you were so adamant on not allowing others to talk bad about him. recalling your words, “well because it’s simply just rude, not only that but you work so hard to get such good grades and it’s not fair that they look down on you just because you do well. you’re not even a bad guy, you’re quite lovely.”

he knew what other kids said about him everyday, even if you tried to cover it up from him. he appreciated the thought. and since then, you two were like peas in a pod. never separating, only having each other to protect yourselves from the cruel, harsh world.

so here he was, his ears catching the noise of a few sniffles that originated from your nose. he leaned forward a bit, not wanting to move you too much. he grabbed a few tissues, passing them onto you. you showed him a soft yet sad smile, trying to hide your sadness.

“yah, don’t try to force yourself to seem happy, let it all out yn.. you deserve that atleast-“

soobin was cut off by a knock at the door, looking over at you. “i’ll get it, soob, don’t worry..” you removed your head off his shoulder, getting up. you slipped on a pair of black slippers that soobin brought.

your legs guided you towards the door. your hand twisting the knob, opening the door only to spot a tense-looking yeonjun.

“h-hey…” you greeted, your body still blocking the path to enter your apartment.

“do you have someone over ?” he asked, taking a peek at his watch, noticing as time passed.

“just soobin..” you mumbled, watching as yeonjun seemed to be in a rush. and in all honestly it hurt you, he couldn’t spare you a bit of time even after such an intense picture was revealed to you and nearly 18 thousand people ?

“oh.. well do you have time to talk, it’ll be quick.” yeonjun questioned. in all honesty he was in pain too, he hated coming off too coldly towards you. after everything that has happened, he just wanted to wrap you in his arms and tell you that it was all going to be okay. he wanted to press small kisses all over your face and tell you that you’re the only one he’s ever wanted. he wanted to tell you about how you changed him, how you made him into such a loving being. but here he was, about to hurt you even more. he hated this. he hated your red swollen eyes, your nose was also red, looking down to your hand seeing the tissue that you grasped. it broke his heart, he didn’t want to ever see you in such a state of vulnerability, you didn’t deserve that.. you only deserved all the happiness in the world.

“umm.. yeah-“

“lets break up.”

you looked at him, wide eyes open. eyes tearing up, your mouth open. before you composed yourself, eyes still shiny with tears, looking at him with still a bit of shock on your face.

“y-yeonjun you’re not being serious, right ? i know that picture wasn’t as it seemed.. it was all yoojung and karina’s doing right ! i don’t hate you over those pictures yeonjun ! i know that it’s all just to get us to brea-“

“yn.. i’m being serious, it was me in those pictures. karina had nothing to do with it, it was just me and yoojung. yn, i just- i don’t love you.” yeonjun tried his best to avoid your eyes, his voice nearly cracking from delivering those words to you.

yeonjun regretted this so much, but it was better for you, it was better for you to stay happy without him. he needed to protect you.. he had no idea what yoojung would do to hurt you.

he continued to avoid your eyes, seeing the way that they were tearing up, he knew you were holding it back. all he wanted to do was to hug you, tell you that it’s all because of yoojung. tell you that it was all because yoojung is threatening your mental being and your relationship. but he couldn’t, he wanted to, but it was best if you hated him, rather than trying to change his mind. he knew that you would rather go through so much pain to stay with him.

soobin got up from the couch, only hearing the last few words that yeonjun said to you. he made his way to the door way, eying yeonjun from head to toe.

“leave.” soobin said, backing you away from the door. he knew he was about to make a few remarks towards yeonjun and he didn’t want you to be there for that. he didn’t want you to see him fighting with the person who you adored for such a long time.

“yah, soobin, this has nothing to do with you.”

“it does, yn is my best friend, and if you’re going to be so fucking rude while breaking up with them, then i’m going to get involved. did you expect me to just stand there while you hurt my friend.. they did their best to make you happy, yn helped you recover from a breakup, and yet here you are.. you’re no different than yoojung. so leave. what is it about cheating that makes the two of you feel so fulfilled ? and you can’t even say that you lacked gaining affection, because yn gave you more than enough of affection..”

yeonjun’s heart crumpled from soobin’s words, ‘you’re no different than yoojung.’ he didn’t like that, he didn’t want to be like yoojung.. he never wanted to be compared to yoojung.

soobin pushed yeonjun’s shoulder with two fingers, ignoring anything that you were saying to him.

“leave and never come back.” soobin yelled, slamming the door shut and locking it. looking over to see your crying figure. pulling you into a hug, his hand on the back of your head, as if you could get any closer. he felt the wet patch growing on his tee. he didn’t mind though, that was the least of his worries. he just wanted you to feel okay.

“don’t listen to anything that he said, i know that i kinda pushed it too far. but.. im sure he did love you, i took a psychology class, remember ? that means i know all about body language..” soobin claimed, hoping to at least get a little giggle out of you. which worked, he felt you laugh against his chest. you pulled away from his embrace, wiping off your tears aggressively.

“lets finish the movie !” you exclaimed, tears still rolling down your face and a pout still visible on your lips. but soobin loved that you were trying your best to recover.

whereas, yeonjun walked through the city, the night sky engulfing him as he walked without a destination. he scanned the crowd, seeing a few familiar faces from his dance students, smiles plastered on their faces. but yeonjun continued walking, not stopping to say hello. his throat felt clogged, and his eyes felt teary, but he was holding it all in. he took a seat on a bench, wired headphones in his ears, attempting to distract him.. but in reality it only made things worse as he could only think of the situation.. he wanted to full on bawl, but he didn’t want to go home to taehyun…

The Heroine's Journey 101

What do you want?

I want a full Heroine's Journey arc for Carol.

That's what I want.

I read Gail Carriger's The Heroine's Journey just over a year ago and I've been thinking about the Heroine's Journey in relation to Carol ever since.

First things first, I need to stress that the Heroine's Journey is not the same as the Hero's Journey.

I don't want a Hero's Journey for Carol because this framework privileges individual greatness and solitude. Heroes tend to end up sad and alone.

I want a Heroine's Journey for Carol because this framework is about love, connection, and community.

Heroines love and are loved in return.

Heroines get their happily ever after.

Who wouldn't want that for Carol?

The Heroine’s Journey is a timeless narrative framework. And I mean timeless! Carriger traces its origins in ancient myths from all around the world (The Theft of Persephone, The Myth of Osiris, The Descent of Ishtar) and it's still being used today. Carriger highlights that the Heroine's Journey is the backbone of hugely successful pop culture franchises (Harry Potter, Twilight) and this framework also underpins most romance novels (one of the most lucrative forms of fiction). The Heroine's Journey is a winning formula because it prioritizes emotional resonance. We root for the characters because they feel authentic. These stories make us cry, smile, and cheer in all the right places. These stories always keep us engaged and keep us coming back for more.

And guess what? The Heroine's Journey is also common in our fandom equivalent of romance novels - Caryl fics.

Sticking with obvious examples for now, we all know that search and rescue narratives are common in fic, right? If you've ever read a fic where Carol is on a mission to find her lost daughter and she falls for Daryl along the way, you've read a Heroine's Journey. If you've ever read a fic where Carol sets out to rescue Daryl, you've read a Heroine's Journey. Similarly, If you've ever read a fic where Carol rebuilds her life after being exiled or forced to leave home, you've read a Heroine's Journey.

What I'm trying to say is you’re probably already a fan of the Heroine’s Journey. If you like narratives with a strong emotional core, romance, love, found family, comfort, and happy endings then look no further than the Heroine's Journey.

By my reckoning, Carol’s never done a full Heroine’s Journey arc in the flagship show. Some of that is to do with Carol’s personality – she’s a lone wolf for the most part and the desire for revenge can be a strong motivator for her. Creative decisions have also prevented Carol from having a full Heroine's Journey. Carol's never really been allowed to have a full romantic storyline with Daryl and she's never really achieved emotional closure.

I'm hoping things are different this time around. We definitely have a real opportunity to see a Heroine's Journey in action. This is because Carol's undertaking a recovery mission, not a revenge mission. Critically, Carol’s love for Daryl is at the heart of her quest. Her love is driving her every step of the way. Carol's love is what makes her a heroine.

My next few posts will break down each major stage of the Heroine’s Journey (The Descent, The Search, The Ascent). I'm going to explain how each beat could be used in TBOC and what I'd like to see from the show. Some of these beats are a given and already form part of the TBOC's story. Some beats and themes should be a given. Most importantly, Carol's undertaking this journey because she loves Daryl - the narrative should be hammering that point home at every opportunity. We also need to see meaningful payoff - we need to know that Carol didn't come all this way for nothing. Another hug isn't going to cut it. Another "I love you" sans kiss isn't going to cut it.

We need to see a passionate and romantic reunion.

We need to see Caryl's love proudly celebrated on screen.

They've earned it.

We've earned it too.

Romantic canon is the natural conclusion to Carol/Caryl's arc and Carol's Heroine's Journey would be incomplete without romantic closure.

okayyyy i guess ill just write abt some things that i wanna get out before i forget to??

- LOVE, love love how they made ennis the one who initiated all of the romantic affection between the two. literally insane over it. it feels so in-character, considering ennis has probably been affection starved since his mother died when he was a kid. of course he has alma, but do we really get the sense that ennis was ever very affectionate with her? could he have been, in rural, christian, wyoming, where conervative notions of courtship prevail? did he even want to be, knowing that the only person he shows real attraction towards is a man? who knows. we just know that he was craving love, and lucas did an amazing job at capturing that need.

- the "'lets ranch up together', 'no bc earl and rich'" conversation happens after ennis tells jack that he'd divorced alma...a year and a half earlier. what an interesting change! it seems like both adaptations, movie and play, mess around with that specific sequence of events. i really enjoyed what it brought to this specific show, though, because in the script it's described as a "gut-punch" to jack when ennis tells him he already left alma in response to jack telling ennis that he'd decided to leave lureen. it really hammers home the idea that jack thought it was just their wives getting in the way of their life together all that time. it was framed wayyy different than jack driving up 14 hrs after getting his hopes up thanks to a phonecall or a postcard from ennis abt the divorce, but it still hits the beat it's supposed to, where we as the audience can see that its the first time their relationship shifts—and not for the better.

- "little darlin'."I got to hear "LITTLE DARLIN'" not just once, but TWICE. still not over it.

- the show also brought more...i guess, explicit attention to the fact that ennis really only wants to do ranch work, and how much that affects his family. i know its present in all the texts, but the new conversations he and alma have regarding the various 'city jobs' she tries to rope him into and the dead-end ranch jobs that keep going belly up from underneath him are just really sad. he's someone who craves wide open spaces, and the beauty of film allowed heath to capture this hunched, clenched, uncomfortable look and feel of a man who seems too big for any room he's in. ennis is not happy in domesticity. he's a saddle bum through and through, and out with nature is where he belongs. but since theatre (esp theatre in-the-round) doesn't have the luxury of different set dressing, those conversations and arguments bw ennis and alma capture that same bit of characterization.

- i...dunno how i feel about mike's jack, if i'm honest? lucas was incredible. i think he brought just the right amount of taciturn and tender, rage and remorse to a role that needs all of that in an actor. i think mike's jack was a little...idk. too big, if you get me? like there were certain line deliveries that i felt could've been said differently, or had different emotions behind them than the ones i was picking up on. i know stage is different, so in both cases, the actors went VERY big (heath's quiet, simmering rage is a completely different beast against lucas' loud, screaming outburtsts, for example), but...idk. there was just something about mike's jack that threw me off? I told my friend that I was iffy about his performance, and without prompt she said, "I didn't like how much he laughed at everything" and I think I feel the same. For example, the "I didn't want none of either kind but fuck all has worked the way i wanted, nothing has ever come to my hand the right way" line was said really jolly, without much of a edge to it, and i think thats what's thrown me off-kilter so much. in mike's performance, i didn't feel the bitter edge to a lot of his lines that occur later on in the script that are apparent to me not only in jake gyllenhaal's performance, but in the SS text, itself.

He was technically very good and I love the silly things he'd do to get ennis to open up, but he was a little too jovial, not enough bitchy, not enough moody and sassy like jake's jack. i see a lot of jake's jack in mike's performance bc aside from a few lines about how much jack likes the rodeo, all we can really glean from either characters in the SS text is that ennis is quiet, and that jack talks a lot. im not trying to compare the two performances too much bc they are fundamentally different actors working in different mediums, but heath and jake brought a lot of dimsension into charas who could have turned out waaaay different had different actors played them and gotten in touch w different emotions within the script, so i can see how other actors could look to the film for a lot of inspo on how to go about portraying ennis and jack while trying to do their own things as well. my issue is that jack becomes very heartsick and bitter and just plain fed up with everything about his life by the time their last trip rolls around, but play!jack never let that bitterness start to show, so by the time that jack does his whole "i wish i knew how to quit you" monologue, it felt very abrupt to see him screaming and yelling and hollering at ennis like that.

i dunno, after seeing tons of ppl in the brokeback tag over the past few months saying that mike faist was their favorite jack, i was actually really expecting a lot more? but as it stands, jake gyllenhaal still reigns supreme. he captured every facet of jack twist that makes him so compelling to read and write and think about and analyze, and mike, while he was still very good, didn't do that nearly as well imho.

- the play firmly cemented to me that jack twist is just bottom coded, i guess

- some of the music hit at different scenes than i had initially thought they would?? i thought the play would end on "hale strew river" playing in the bg as *SPOILER* old!ennis holds the ghost/dream/memory version of young!jack in a mirror of the way he'd held jack by the campfire on brokeback in '63. but that was not the case. this is an instance of where my heightened expectations made the reality seem kind of disappointing in comparison. i'm also kind of sad that my other favorite song, "beneath the moon," was only featured as a diegetic recording heard on a clock radio (NOT live), and it was played during a scene between alma and ennis. Like, looking back at the lyrics it makes sense:

Why don't you take me for a stroll into the sunset

Another lonely summer's day is ending soon

Oh, let us walk another mile into the twilight

And let me be alone with you beneath the moon

But i thought that it was going to be played during a scene where another one of jack's frequent proposals of a life together gets rejected. when the soundtrack for the play was released it gave me the same vibes as "i dont want to say goodbye", one of the few original songs on the movie soundtrack, and i was POSITIVE that this was a jack-longing-for-ennis song. like, it's all about sunsets and twilight and the moon and all this outdoor imagery, and as we all know, jack and ennis are literally only together underneath the sunsets and twillight and moon! so im actually really sad it wasn't an ennis/jack moment :c

- the actor who played jack's dad played the role a lot more emotionally than i expected. movie!john is very, again, muted and quietly bitter, just like all these characters are. play!john seemed really...what i can only describe as choked up? like, he was shouting and got really riled up in his "jack used to say" monologue at ennis, and there was some disgust in there and a lot of anger, but what i actually read was more like him telling ennis "you're part of the reason why my son is gone." and then he gets up and walks away from the table, and exits the stage. it was really really heartbreaking. maybe i have a different read on the performance than what was intended, but it opens up a whole new side to john twist that i think would be interesting to explore.

- theres a few little added lines of dialogue on jack's part that are great. when they leave brokeback and are heading away in opposite directions, jack turns back around and goes "ennus-" as though he's going to make his proposal to start a life together then and there, but ennis knowingly cuts him off and says smth like "see you around, jack twist", and shakes his hand goodbye. there was another moment (the divorce admission, the rich and earl confession scene) where jack is talking about their sweet life together, and hes talking about them being in rocking chairs on their porch in front of a nice fire and ughhghf....it called to mind this line in one of my all-time fave fics, Recompense:

Couldn't set out on the porch, just set, quiet and together; there wasn't any porch, wasn't even any house, where they could be seen setting. Start hauling their canes, their bifocals, damn electric blankets, up in back of the pickup? They couldn't have that life. They couldn't have any life at all. The weight of Jack's misery, pressing all around, seemed enough to cave him in.

one i didnt like, though, was when jack and ennis are wrestling, jack gets pinned under ennis and says "sheep be damned!" before ennis kisses him in the first romantic display of affection we see bw the two. also when the sheep get mixed up, ennis has a meltdown and tells jack that aguirre will realize the counts off and put 2 & 2 together that they're fooling around, and he yells smth along the lines of their trist being "sick", and Jack says smth like, "you sure didn't seem to think it was sick this past month."

this is just a me thing honestly bc i'm kind of a SS purist in some instances, and one thing that always stuck with me is that jack and ennis never talk about the sex they're having when they're on brokeback. aside from the "im not no queer" convo, the sex wasn't even alluded to; they just "let it happen," and i think thats veryyy in-line for a character like ennis. i think jack would love to talk about it, but he doesn't wanna spook ennis away, so he keeps his mouth shut. i dont think either of them would speak, even in a roundabout way, abt their sex life when they're 19 on brokeback, and thats why the whole "redlined it all the way couldnt get here fast enough" line is so revelatory imo, bc its the first time either of them acknowledge the conscious choice theyre making to fuck. so idk. i didnt really care for the fact that they were (somewhat) openly referring to their tryst while still on brokeback

- less a note of the show and more a note of the audience, but i saw the show twice and the first night i saw it, the audience laughed at REALLY sad and serious moments that i in no way thought were laugb worthy, and i felt like maybe i was taking the work too srsly until i saw the final performance and THAT audience didnt laugh at any of those really sad moments. so i got rly irritated abt that the first night cause it wasnt even like the lines were delivered in a jokey way or anythibg....

Welcome Home, So Interesting Thing about The Hearts

When hearing about Welcome home I wanted to go in as blind as I could to try and see how much I could figure out on my own, before seeing to many others theories. I don’t have the energy to write a full essay at the moment, BUT I NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE HEARTS (again, I am going in blind so I might be talking about something that’s been talked about)

What hearts? The hearts on the soles of Wally’s Shoes and Barnaby’s paws. It’s mentioned in both their bios that they share that characteristic. I thought that was a specific thing to draw attention to, so I looked to see if there was symbolism for having hearts on the soles of your feet, and holy crap there is!

Apparently there is a sister saying to “wearing your heart on your sleeve” called “wear your heart on your feet”. Symbolically speaking, when we wear our heart on our feet, they’re still exposed for others to see, leaving us open to finding romance (typically). But at the same time the strategic placement gives us more agency and control as we play in the risky game of love. Which sounds reasonable, but could become too guarded of a strategy if your not careful.

Barnaby has hearts on all four paws so technically he has harts in the palms of his hands and that also has symbolism, it’s main symbolism is charity from the heart, but also

For Barnaby, it symbolizes help that’s given out of love, who Barnaby helps the most is Wally and since it’s a characteristic that they share, it gives me the impression that it’s something between them which brings me to THIS DRAWING FROM THE WEBSITE!!

This is how the heart in hand symbolism is usually depicted open palm hand outstretched to the viewer. This drawing snagged my attention, it was strangely intimate. I almost passed over it, but looked to see if there was symbolism for blue hearts..and dude..

Red Hearts symbolizes romance and romantic love, and blue hearts symbolize a platonic connection, apparently for emojis it draws attention to a unique bromance or a connection between friends that are as close as brothers.

So…for the heart that Barnaby has in his hand, that symbolizes the help he gives Wally out of love to be romantic (that’s how I am reading it) but Wally himself is painting it blue, symbolizing platonic connection. Which, to me, says that Barnaby has feelings for Wally, but Wally sees it as friendship. Mostly because Wally doesn’t get it, because Wally’s gay coding is gay coded so I don’t think it’s a “but he’s straight” issue, but I do feel like a frustration is being vented here. Which is why I find it really sad

The fictional creators of the Welcome Home website are more framing devices then characters but the fictional creators of the show Welcome Home are characters, more or less. The whole show of Welcome Home feels like it was created by a gay man who put as much of himself as he could in the show without giving himself away because it was the early 70s. I mean technically it’s really obvious, but would go unnoticed by the people he is trying to avoid.

I get the feeling that what I read from the drawing is something the creator has been through. Maybe he was the Barnaby and his labors of love were seen as friendship and maybe held out hope even though he knows he shouldn’t or maybe he was the Wally and perhaps did return feelings but was still figuring himself out and couldn’t see those feelings for what they were so he painted them as friendship hurting his friend and himself as a result

I am trying to see what the “creators” of the show were going for when creating the show as well as see Welcome Home for its super natural elements, but that’s a completely different post. I am not really even sure what Wally is or how much of his own entity he actually is or if the others are even around at all, but certain pieces of art work shows a lot of personal heart and soul from the creator (character) and it makes me want to know more about him, and see what agency he has in the narrative

Awakening is a game that was rushed, and suffered a lot of cuts, but when you pay attention to the history the game lays out, you start to see this rich world they were trying to create. And the plot! It takes a standard "the prince must slay the evil dragon" story and it flips it on its head and uses it to explore cycles of abuse and trauma.

I'm not sure I agree there about the game having a rich world.

There's very little to the world building like Chrom's famous ancestor and Ylisse's First Exalt is just a word for a word copy of Marth without any sort of name. Similarly Chrom's father has no name and the crusade is woefully underdeveloped.

There are also characters like the Hierarch, whom allegedly acted as a mentor to Emmeryn but just betrays her with this big event going uncommented on and the Hierarch having no name, his Japanese name is just the name of his class!

The Taguel are another thing having basically no history outside of things basically copy/pasted from the Laguz and the writers couldn't even get Panne's personal history right; she says in one support her birth mother raised her alongside other taguel, but in another says her mom died when she was an infant so she never knew her or any other taguel.

Compare these all to even the first game having oodles of info on Marth's ancestor and the history of the continent as well as its wars.

Or Orson's betrayal in Sacred Stones to the Hierarch, as well as the long history of the Laguz in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn compared to the Taguel's inconsistent lore that acts as a mere footnote in Awakening.

Also personally I find Awakening follows all the standard FE tropes to the letter without any sort of diverging from them.

...If you find killing vast swathes of virtual human enemies disturbing, then strategy games centered around war may not be the games for you. This is what we call a genre convention. You gotta be able to handle killing the little pixel guys to enter.

Its not that I find it disturbing but more I feel Awakening treats war like a game and isn't interested in explaining why the protagonists are killing people or the ramifications of killing people.

Its simply playing into "kill brown men because they're ugly and rescue the sexy brown women from them."

Like even Genealogy of the Holy War talked about how the cycle of vengeance affected everyone, how its still sad to kill the Loptous cultists as they are human beings and that even the head of the cult, Manfroy didn't start out evil.

Awakening, to me personally, just seemed like it only cared about making the player feel powerful by having every enemy be either forced to fight them against their will or be a piece of crap that absolutely nobody loved (Aversa's storyline goes out of its way to say nobody mourns Grimleal deaths for example), whilst every women around just threw themselves at the player.

This is the game where M/F MONOGAMY IS A STRICTLY ENFORCED GAME MECHANIC I'm. I just. Did we read the same supports? Because most of the Robin supports I remember are like, Robin failing really badly at making soup, or losing stuff, or teaching people funny slang and then regretting it.

All the supports had to be written to believably be building friendships, because you can still A rank characters with each other after they're married. Because of this, the vast majority of supports only pivot into anything even remotely romantic directly in the S support. It's usually not done well, honestly, imo. But either way that doesn't leave room for this like, harem anime AU you're inventing in your head.

"Women throwing themselves at the player" did you read the support where Robin accidentally gives Sully the shits and she threatens to kill him, anon. Did you.

Anyway. It sounds like you're reaching for reasons to object to this game on some kind of moral grounds. You don't HAVE to do that, though. You can just dislike the game for non-moral reasons. Or for no reason. It doesn't have to be that deep.

Anyway to address your other points briefly I mean, uh, with way too many words as usual lmao

I'm not about to argue that the game is perfect in any respect. It's not even CLOSE. I've said before and I'll say it again that there's a lot of unused potential in Awakening, from places where characterization is thin to the massive gaps in the worldbuilding. The way this game treats Aversa is gross as hell and it has plenty racism problems besides. Trust me, I am not unaware of or ignoring the bad and the ugly.

To be honest? It being deeply flawed is what keeps me coming back to it.

If a game is perfect, there's only so long you can gush about how good it is. If a game is GOOD, but FLAWED? You could write a fuckin thesis about it. Hell, I arguably have, the word count on the collection of Awakening-related meta posts I've authored or made big additions to just keeps on jumping.

Yes, Awakening's worldbuilding has major gaps; but what we got was legitimately interesting! Piecing together what we got is fun for me! Filling in some of those gaps by extrapolating from the facts at hand is fun! Headcanoning in the rest is fun!

Sure, some of the characters and relationships are sorely underdeveloped, and there are some inconsistencies in the supports and that sucks. But seriously analyzing what's there is fun as hell! Taking the things we know and extrapolating personality and relationships is a blast! And for the more major characters, what's there is legitimately compelling as hell - the amount of scholarship the mutuals and I have authored about mister Grima faildragon himself is proof of that. As is the fact that we have honest to goodness essays about Validar of all characters. VALIDAR.

I can't really compare it to most of the other FE games, having not played most of them. I can accept it's not the best FE by a long shot. But I'm also willing to give it leeway for how the release dates hamstrung it, I appreciate the clear love and effort that was put into it anyway, and I respect it a lot for the part it played in keeping the franchise alive today.

And to be perfectly frank, it also is a story that I stumbled across when I was in a rough patch, and it helped me deal with the Horrors, so y'know. It's a really important game to me for that reason.

If its flaws are dealbreakers for you I may not be able to change your mind. That's ok!

But hopefully this at least gives you some insight into why I, at least, am so obsessed with it. It's flawed as hell and that makes it capital C Compelling.

In the series, KimChay never get back together. Kim apologises through a song he has written, but Chay does not accept it. In the novel, they got back together but it is a very toxic relationship. In VP special novel, he locks and rapes Chay after they got back together because of jealousy issues. Then Chay befriends Macau and they got closer. Though I do not know if they had anything romantic because I dropped the novel 😭

I really like your approach on character. Especially when I realised Kinn wanted to control Porsche because his dad always had a control on him, in his family everything was under his dad’s radar and choices. Korn locked his sister in a room for years to take control of the situation, it is only natural Kinn has the same approach in his relationship.

Whereas Vegas’s only purpose to please Pete and to be able to do that he is ready to do anything. He has changed a lot, he has been working to a lot to be someone whom Pete likes a lot. He doesn’t mind to be someone else as long as he can please Pete. In any way. The way he feels like he can’t contribute to his relationships with Pete if he can’t have sex with him is a bit concerning, I am glad they will address this issue in the upcoming chapters. I really hope to see more Vegas pov :)

Pete, on the other hand, thinks he is not deserving “love” is very interesting. I believe it was his dad or mom? made him believe he is not capable of that. Maybe losing his mother made him believe whoever he loves, leaves him. It’s a good thing that Vegas has a lot of love to share with him :)

I have also realised that I can’t feel sad for Kinn at all. Whatever happens to him, he deserves it. Because every character in this story is ready to change or adjust themselves for the people they love. But he flat out refuses that, even though he is being told the truth all the time. He ignores the reality, he thinks himself above everyone (that’s because his dad made him believe so I know) but his arrogance is still so juvenile. I hope somebody (hopefully pete) humbles him and teaches him a lesson. Because after him locking Pete while his boyfriend was fighting for his life was a cruelty I did not expect from him, not this extent at least. Pete saved his ass many many times. I wonder what would happen if Vegas knew what Kinn did lmao.

oh yeah we are going to understand that vegas has a lot more insecurities than obviously pete was picking up from his POV. i think there are some elements of himself that vegas is just as good as hiding from pete and everyone else, as pete is with his own hidden depths and feelings.

yes pete definitely got most of that from his dad i think there is a similar vein with both his and vegas' relationships with their fathers which is the 'not being good enough' idea and the ways their fathers tried to make them feel like failures or undeserving. petes understanding of love is as weakness in a way too, because he never really understood why his mother would take him and leave but then they always went back in the end. part of his fear about admitting to his feelings is admitting to the idea of needing someone else. pete knows how to lean on people but he feels the most comfortable being self sufficient and thats why the idea of love frightens him. but youre so right vegas does have a lot of love to share!! and i do think he can show pete the ways in which it could make them stronger

ohh yeah kinn is a very clear example of a person set in their ways, who has let themselves become rigid and stagnant to their detriment. but also yes his father has laid down the importance of power and his understanding of that means not letting anyone else overpower him or his choices or decisions which is why he cant listen to counsel or take in feedback or other dissenting opinions. all of these are threats to his entire identity. he doesn’t know how to let go and not be in control (and if he ever does step back and try its going to be a very long and difficult road for him) but yeah he really hasnt come off too great in this story. omg murder is the answer to that, vegas would want to murder him again if he found out what he did to pete. but who knows if pete is going to tell him ;)

if the betrayal is too much for him to tolerate but also he's a yandere so keeping his bae aka MC, what about making /sure/ they can never try to scheme again like (warning for incoming silly goofy violent actions) breaking their wrists so they can't be violent again (temporarily or indefinitely, i feel like that would depend whether MC ends up submitting or not tbh, tho i think he'd take care of them regardless? you tell us wink) or even mindbreaking them (through torture or intercourse, both can work but perhaps joren would be more interested in the latter considering more chance of MC becoming dependent on joren without going against him again so it could be almost romantic in his eyes) thoughts?

also the talk about MC sad / scared crying may me wonder, how would joren react to happy tears or even tears of pleasure pause....

Ughhh, I really was indecisive about what to do. I consulted it with my pillow, my cat, the Kylo Ren's poster on my door... I even asked my brother for his opinion, lol.

He knows I'm making a romance/"mystery" game, but just that, so I asked him in a vague: "thoughts about MC getting killed by their love interest in a bad ending?". His idea was to make MC marry a duke(???), get an army(?), kill Joren's family(????), and have these two die in an epic battle sequence(???).

So, no luck there.

I was thinking about adding the option to talk him down, but yeah! It still didn't feel right!! It felt too "murdersim", not "yandere game" enough.

I actually think it's better to limit MC's death to 1 horrorporn ending, and leave the rest as survival endings, no matter if they are normal or horrorporn endings. It makes more sense for a yandere character. TW: minbreak for later.

And yes! I can still keep the "Joren uses violence as an outlet for his anger/sadness" and "Joren uses violence to fix his problems", but like you said, he breaks their wrists, maybe their legs... And tada! Problem solved, MC can still have their freedom because he'll take them wherever they want to go, and help them to do whatever they want to do... But now they won't be able to betray him again, since they need him, permanently.

I could even add the option "to talk him down" but instead of avoiding death, MC avoids getting their limbs permanently broken. I want it to be a little extreme since this is the greatest reminder of his trauma.

And sexual mindbreak! Yes! I'm into the unrealistic "happy" kind of mindbreak, where the character loses their mind, but learns to enjoy it? The realistic "blank-eyed" mindbreak just makes me sad T_T

But I can see Joren being satisfied with both.

In the "happy" one, he'd totally feel like he won everything he ever wanted, even if MC is a shell of themselves, can't do anything without him, and gets some lucid attacks of panic... But they look happy (and broken) most of the time, so it's fine, they are in love <3. Here he'd still have sex with them.

In the "blank-eyed" one, he'd also be content, but not really happy. He got them, yes, but they're pretty much comatose all the time, so all he has is a doll. He'd take care of them, but having sex would lose its appeal if they just lay under him like a corpse. He'd eventually learn to treat them like a trophy on a shelf.

And happy tears?? The man has seen tears of pleasure, yes, but not that!! It has so much comedy potential!!

If someone else made MC cry with happiness, you bet he's picking a fight with that person, who do they think they are for making MC cry?

And if he was the reason behind the tears of joy, he'd fear he just hurt/scared them somehow!! He would be super confused, what in Moon's name did he do????

And imagine Joren pushing past his fear of intimacy for the first time, and telling MC he loves them... Just for them to cry?? Traumatic. He would feel rejected, and all the progress he made about showing his feelings would be lost, so MC better tell him those are tears of happiness before that happens.

Also, tears of pleasure are a yes!! He's licking them off MC's face!! And when he becomes comfortable with being soft, he'll kiss them <33!!

The Solitude of Prime Numbers, by Paolo Giordano, translated by Shaun Whiteside, had a lot of promise and acclaim, but ultimately, couldn't hold up its own weight for me.

One of the issues is simply that it's an example of that contemporary genre of wretchedness that I personally find it difficult to enjoy: a literature in which all of the characters are meant to be flawed and unlikable, to the point where the book is made up of secondhand sadness and embarrassment, dashed hopes and romantic failure, silent tears behind closed doors and repressed dark memories. Alice and Matthias are misfits, it seems mostly due to their childhood traumas. As they grow up, they swirl around each other, never quite confessing their feelings, always at least a little miserable. Alice struggles with anorexia and Matthias with a surly silence and awkwardness.

There was a lot that was good here, but Giordano didn't seem to know how to wrap their story up, whether to give it an unexpected romantic ending—whether unhealthy or healing—or keep them friends, detached from one another, across a continent. So instead he created an in-between conclusion that I don't really think will satisfy anyone.

I was also very torn about the portrayal of Matthias's sister. His traumatic event is that he leaves his mentally disabled sister in the park to go to a birthday party, and when they return, she's disappeared. She's presumed dead and never found. The way she's referred to throughout the book dances dangerously close to a non-human ghostly portrayal, ever-silent when alive yet haunting them forever, a voyeurism hinted at with the idea that she could still be alive or picturing the violence that could have been done to her. The more I look back on it, the more uncomfortable I feel about her place in this novel.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: her and utena! 99% of their interactions its like woah juri what is yuor issue then you learn all about shiori and its like Woaaah i get it. and then the parts where juri helps her .. :) like juri definitely projected on utena (and projected herself+shiori onto utenanthy a lot) and you can TELL !! but i also think juri saw utena as a symbol of all the things she could never quite do and in the end utena does EVERYTHING. like she gets out and so does anthy. so its a little headcanon territory but i think juri definitely kind of. idk i dont want to say she lived vicariously through her but i think her wanting to help utena wasnt entirely selfless LOL. also the implication in the movie that juri etc arent far behind utena in leaving ohtori... bursts into tears

Hello dear mutual of mine just wanted to ask a random question again (hope you don't mind) what is your favourite manga in this time period and why? (Aka I'm fishing for recs ok? You have really great taste!)

hmmm....

It's a tie at the moment between Osamu Nishi's 'Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun!' and Yuu Morikawa's 'Mr. Villain's Day Off'!!

Welcome to demon School Iruma Kun! because it has, for me, a good balance between action, school day growth, teen self-discovery and deep seated political drama! We follow the titular Iruma-kun on his journey in the demon realm as a human recently adopted by a grand demon! The story is all about Iruma gaining confidence, friends and most importantly learning that being selfish isn't always a bad thing. That and also a massive conspiracy about dead/missing demon kings; terrorism and elements of what I'd say are thriller!

That and the fact that the main cast is mostly made up of a full class of students and it's amazing how the class are all a found family (that feels REALISTIC and CONSISTENT) but are also allowed to be individual characters with their own interpersonal relationships and ideals/wants that are never pushed aside for plot convivence or in service of the main characters progression. I also hold a special place in my heart for the love trio (the CANON) name for the main trio of the cast and they're (canonically) self-proclaimed soulmates who just love each other and its like it doesn't have to be specified if its romantic or platonic because they love each other and that's what's important!!

And Mr Villain's Day Off because it's just so fucking funny. Need a silly fluff piece with unexpected jabs of angst that still leave you with the feeling of 'oh there is good in the world'? wrapped up in a power-rangers parody??? Well, this is for you. We follow the 'general' a member of an alien race who are trying to invade the earth and take over; destroying all humans in the process who are stopped by the Rangers which are literally just the power rangers but for copyright reasons aren't called that. As the title suggests however, we only follow him when he's off duty and it's a very (ironically) humanising piece and shows our MC seeing the beauty of Earth and human life! He has doubts every so often about his mission because of this and its fun to see his thought process!!

We also occasionally see from the Rangers POV who are very confused about the fact that apparently their alien enemies have... enforced workplace routines?? And mandatory bureaucracy?? Also the GENERAL (implied to be the one who they mainly go up against/at least meet/ know is behind most of the things they deal with) has a hard line that if he's not paid he's not fighting them and won't intentionally hurt animals. They also see that he's a *person* because for instance he finds out that the Red Ranger has a very glaring weakness and could take him out with it but simply doesn't... which is cool of him?

There's also a recurring plot line with actual spirits and cherry blossoms etc that i won't spoil but is so simultaneously sad and fluffy!!

Also I know i told you last time but I really, really don't mind questions!!!

My Genya isn’t attracted (romantically or sexually) to the darkling. She sees him as a father figure.

Genya is 5 years old when she’s first brought to the little palace and first meets the darkling.

the darkling is the first person to see her power as a gift and the first person to make her feel at home.

She’s 9 years old when he gifts her to the queen without consulting her. She feels betrayed but quickly forgives him because she first finds a mother figure in the queen and a brother/friend in prince nikolai.

Genya is 13 years old when she makes the hard choice to endure but keeps confiding in the darkling on occasions. she becomes his loyal spy and soldier. Her dreams of revenge and the glimmers of hope the darkling gives her are what keeps her holding on.

Over the years, she visits him quite often and they even have that little tradition of spending the evening of her birthday together. They have cake and tea together and he entertains her with some stories.

Genya is quite sad when the darkling is out of the palace for her fifteenth birthday but that is also the day she first meets David Kostyk.

The other grisha didn’t know the whole truth. They only knew her as the Queen’s pet and the King’s whore. The Darkling had been her only friend, until David but, even then, David didn’t know the full extent of what went on behind closed doors and she didn’t wish for him to know. MY GENYA’S THOUGHTS ABOUT THE DARKLING IN SIEGE & STORM / SHADOW AND BONE S 2 As much as Genya owed The Darkling her life, she remained utterly afraid of the man. Of the father figure who’d led the child she was into the grasp of a hungry King when she was too young to consent to anything of the sorts or even grasp the amount of suffering she was signing up for. But it wasn’t just the man she was terrified of. Because, although his insistence that she be given the room next to his and stays by his side at all time never failed to trigger her (it reminded her of the king’s predatory behaviors towards her), there were true monsters to fear as well. His Nichevo'ya. Creatures made of shadows craving human flesh. Creatures he’d convinced his followers he had complete control over but Genya had witnessed the truth. […] Control was but an illusion. really. A mask he kept on and one that came tumbling down the moment they were alone and he’d have her touch up his scars so the others wouldn’t see the true damages he’d suffered at the claws of the volcras, other creatures he’d made a long time ago.Merzost was poisoning him. And Genya knew enough about poison and its effects to know there was no cure for this specific affliction of his. Claiming the last Morozova amplifier might buy him time at most. He’d die eventually. But there was no telling what cruelty he’d be able to accomplish between now and the moment he’d draw his last breath. Genya had a brother-sister-like relationship with Nikolai when they were much younger.

One day when they were kiddos, Genya was sad because she felt like she didn’t belong and some girls at court had been mean to her because of her bright red hair, calling her a witch. Nikolai stepped in and let her tailor his hair red so they’d stop making fun of her. He said that they would look like siblings this way, even though he already thought of her as his sister. For some reason, she hasn’t been able to reverse it for days and Nikolai’s new hair color quickly earned him the folk name Too-Clever Fox.

Genya hasn’t forgiven him yet for leaving her behind to serve in the infantry while she suffers silently at the hands of his father (which he doesn’t know). He used to write back to her, then he stopped (right around the time Dominik died, which Genya isn’t aware of) and Genya kept on writing to him until she eventually stopped and lost hope in ever seeing him again.

My Genya knows immediately who Sturmhond really is when she first meets the privateer hired by The Darkling and she says nothing to her General. She keeps the secret because she knows he’s gonna set Alina free and this is what Genya wants. She wants to right her wrongs and she wants Alina to be safe.

Genya hadn’t seen the prince in years but her faith in him had been rekindled when she’d run into Sturmhond, the privateer the Darkling had hired to help capture the second amplifier. Of course, she’d known who he was before he fled with Alina. It had taken a simple exchange. Something that might have seemed trivial to anyone else. But not to her. It hadn’t made sense for a privateer, a non-patriot, to ask her if the crown prince had survived the illness that had spread in the Palace. Nor for the relief to appear in his eyes when he’d read a quiet “ yes ” in her ambers. And if she looked closely, she could perceive the faint traces of tailoring. The red hair had also been a telltale sign for her. He’d once asked her to tailor his hair this exact shade of red when they were kids, so the girls at Court would stop making fun of her bright red curls and calling her a witch. She’d had to admit the muddy green eyes were hiding his too-clever hazel pretty well. She hadn’t said anything on the matter, though. She hadn’t told the Darkling, her General, who he truly was. […] She couldn’t risk Nikolai getting captured […] They’d stood in silence, an understanding passing between them. A silent promise. He knew. She knew. […] And he was gonna free Alina. Alina Starkov. Yes. Genya knew Nikolai was no Lantsov. Alexander wasn’t the only one to talk when he was drunk on kvas. Queen Tatiana was also quite chatty without her inhibitions. Genya had seen the miniature the queen kept close and the portrait inside and she’d heard Tatiana talking fondly of the man it depicted. It had been clear to her that the woman truly loved both her sons but her Sobachka always had a special place in her heart. And Genya understood why. Nikolai might’ve been a bastard son but he was the product of love. (excerpt from a dabble i wrote)

Genya couldn’t allow herself to care for anyone else. Not the way she’d cared for ROZA. The first Otkazat'sya she’d fallen for. A servant girl, like her. But when the King had heard about the teenagers being somewhat involved, he’d had Roza framed for theft, banning her from the Grand Palace. She never heard of her first love after that. And then, there was David whom she’d met when she was fifteen. That day, she’d brought the fabrikators some of the queen’s jewelry that were broken or out of style so they could use it for the material. Genya was sad because the Darkling was away and she had no one else to celebrate her birthday with (usually, the darkling and her had tea together and he would entertain her with some stories). David had noticed she seemed fond of one of the necklaces and he’d fixed it for her. She’d been surprised by the gesture. She’d never worn it, though. Because she had to wear the king’s jewelry instead, as asked by the queen to show how grateful she was for the attention she’d been given. The necklace was still hidden in her bedside table back in her old room. Since then, Genya had found various excuses to come by the fabrikators’ lab but she couldn’t bring herself to make a move. She’d been terrified of the king finding out she had feelings for someone else. If David was sent away, or worse, because of her recklessness, she would’ve never forgiven herself. And so, she’d loved him in secret. Loved him from a distance. (excerpt from a dabble i wrote)

Because of what happened to Roza Genya is afraid of being involved with anyone else and keeps her crush on David (and any of the other loves she has) a secret and will rarely act on her feelings in public.

And the coincidence hadn’t been lost on her that it was the one they’d rode into town a few days ago… She’d comforted him, lulled him to sleep. And the next day, she’d gone back to treating him like the Tsesarevich he was […] When he’d ultimately cornered her for answers, she’d told him that it was over, that there couldn’t be anything else between them. That he was a weakling for crying his heart out for a stupid horse and that she wasn’t fit to play nurse to a pathetic prince. She needed him to hate her, to despise her with all his heart so that there’d be no room for any love to bloom. Because his father wouldn’t be satisfied with just the distance between them. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

Everyone knows what It’s a Wonderful Life is about. How many times have we seen a television series ape its story? The protagonist is at their lowest, they begin believing things would be better if they had never been born, some otherworldly presence comes to show them otherwise. That is what happens in this 1946 classic but it’s also an oversimplification. Until you’ve sat down and actually watched it, you have no idea what this movie is actually about.

All his life, George Bailey (James Stewart) has wanted to travel the world. Unfortunately, his selflessness and responsibilities have prevented him from leaving Bedford Falls. Eventually, he inherits the responsibility of running the Bailey Brothers Building and Loan - a small bank that welcomes anyone who doesn’t want to go to the greedy Henry F. Potter (Lionel Barrymore). When the bank’s funds go missing, he loses all hope and contemplates suicide.

There’s much more to this story than its central conflict. A major portion of the plot concerns the romance between George and Mary Hatch (Donna Reed), the woman who’s had a crush on him since they were young. Their first date has the kind of moments that will remind you why you fell for the guy/gal next to you. What Mary saw in George back then and what she does now is so obvious. Money-wise, he may be poor but in spirit and in friends, he’s rich.

James Stewart is so good in this role. He’s cheery and easy to laugh with but there’s always a hint of sadness right there, behind the main thing. Over and over, you see George slice a little bit off the top and give it to someone who needs it. What he has left is meagre but he always manages and although he doesn’t realize it, we - and everyone who’s ever met him - recognize him as a hero. Not the kind that wins medals; those you only need during extraordinary circumstances. George Bailey is the everyday kind of hero, the kind who refuses to compromise even when raising his hand and speaking out could be to his detriment. Opposing him at seemingly every turn are normal, everyday injustices, unfortunate chance, and greed, all of which Henry F. Potter embodies. You hate Potter because he’s so real. You know there are people just like him everywhere and there are far too few George Baileys to stand up to them.

If you go into the film for its iconic Christmas scenes in which everything goes wrong and George prepares to make a decision from which there is no turning back, you’ll be waiting a while. The picture is over two hours, with the bulk of it focussing solely on George, his relationship with Mary, their family, and the town that comes to love him. If you're going in just to see George's guardian angel, Clarence (Henry Travers) show him how he has touched the lives of the Bedford Falls community, It's a Wonderful Life can feel long. It’s one of those cases where the film’s reputation doesn’t do it any favours because you expect one thing and get something else. Once you get over that initial shock, however, you’re completely won over. After seeing George work hard to do what’s right every day, no matter what, you want more than anything for him to see what you see. Everyone wants to believe they matter. Being shown first-hand how much good one person can do lifts your heart. You might not be George Bailey, but you might be half of one and that’s still pretty great.

It’s a Wonderful Life is a deeply moving film. It highlights humanity’s very best qualities. It’s also romantic, occasionally funny, wonderfully acted and full of life. The characters feel like real people, people you’ve met before, collected together to tell you this very personal message. It takes no effort for you to set aside your initial disappointment because while Frank Capra’s most iconic film (that’s saying something) might not be the movie you think it is going in, it is the movie you want it to be by the end. (On Blu-ray, December 13, 2020)
