Preliminary thoughts on The Bear, race, power and privilege
I’m a non-Black woman of colour who has spent all of my life in the west…so I’ve consumed a lot of television media that is produced by and for the white gaze. The most obvious way that gaze plays out is when people of colour are non-existent in a cast, or when they are included, are tokenistic, bit players.
A more insidious manifestation is where POC are cast to play parts that could just as easily be played by white folks: characters that have no interiority or external relationships related to their cultural identities, wider communities or individual or collective histories (for example, Mindy in The Mindy Project for most of its run, or the characters of colour in Season 1 of Bridgerton).
I've had some thoughts about how The Bear (thankfully) avoids tokenistic and "colour-blind" representation. I also have some thoughts about how the show models meaningful allyship. I'm so keen to discuss this with folks and hear what others think about it too.
Unambiguous and unapologetic
The Bear is confined in its universe, particularly in season 1 where it’s focus is tightly bound to the physical location of The Beef as the setting for almost every scene. Episodes of The Bear are generally not very long, so time is precious (every second really does count). These factors necessarily limit how deep we can get into each character. But the show is so good at drawing on different means of communication: images, lighting, score, soundtrack, phrasing, callbacks to previous episodes, other cultural references etc, that each episode is like a jewellery box with gems waiting to be unpacked and pored over. I've said that I have started reading this show like a tarot deck because of how rich the symbolism in each episode is.
So despite the constraints of time and setting, characters of colour in this show are also so very rich in their realisation and portrayal. These characters are unambiguously and - this is important - unapologetically racialised: through language (see: Tina’s use - and occasional weaponisation lmao - of Spanish), physical appearance (see: Sydney’s two-tone braids and her stunning, prolific collection of headscarves throughout the show), culturally distinct names (see: Sydney Adamu, Ebraheim, Tina Marrero, etc), food (see: Carmy’s peace offering to Syd in ep 1x03 of Ebra’s family chicken suqaar - a popular dish in the latter character’s birth country of Somalia), etc.

These may seem like small and inconsequential details to some. In fact I’ve been seeing a lot of commentary from folks online saying that what they like about The Bear is that race isn’t mentioned at all on the show. But make no mistake: race is all over this thing. The examples I've given are only some of the many references to racialised histories and cultures that build out the broader fabric of multicultural Chicago here.
What is not present in The Bear is a script that is wasting time explaining the characters of colour and their rich inner and outer lives to white folks. Those things are just a given and we are invited to witness them being brought to vivid life by this cast and crew. And I am fucking here for it.
Respect and allyship
Another thing I LOVE about this show is the respect given to, and the recognition of, the experience, talent, drive and ambition of its characters of colour.
This is most obvious in the relationship between Syd and Carmy who are signalled as complementary equals in many ways. Others have written on the importance of the representation embodied by Sydney’s character and you should search out that analyses, especially when its authored by Black women. The only other thing I’d say about it is that I love Sydney’s character and I also love endgame Sydcarmy (even if it’s only hinted at in the last second of the last frame of the last ever episode lmao…I will take whatever I can get of these two 😭).
I also see the show’s respect and recognition manifest in The Bear's investment in its staff, particularly in season 2. Everyone who worked at The Beef has a role at The Bear and Carmy, Syd and Nat fund the ongoing training and upskilling of their largely racialised staff to make sure this happens. Ebra and Tina are paid to attend culinary school (Carmy also gives Tina his prized knife for her studies and beyond). Marcus is sent to stage in Copenhagen to develop his skills as a patissier. And then we have The Bear itself - what started as Carmy and Michael’s vision, is now the whole team’s baby, with Sydney literally being made the captain of the ship by Carmy at the end of ep 2x09.

GIF by @savagegood
Part of what was so tragic about Carmy's fridge spiral at the end of season 2 was that he didn't get to see how beautifully the team came through in a crisis. Instead we had him internalising, regressing and lamenting how he had let everyone down. This language centred Carmy as the be all and end all of The Bear (saviour vibes) when this couldn't have been further from the truth (particularly in a season where the man spent so much of his time not in the restaurant but chasing manic pixie no-last-name-having Claire....but I digress).
Carmy is his best when he checks his ego, takes a step back and realises that he is not alone. He is part of a whole chosen family supporting one another at The Bear. And I get the sense that the folks creating this show know that we need more white folks using their power and privilege to step back and facilitate access, and less gatekeeping white saviours taking credit where its not due.
After all, and paraphrasing Viola Davis, the only thing that separates people of colour from anyone else, is opportunity.
12/04/24 Note: I’ve amended this post because I forgot to mention the most pivotal example of Sydney along with her relationship with Carmy. Also made some slight stylistic changes to phrasing cos i fixate on errors lol

What do you make of this? Looks like 9-1-1 came with a hefty 10 million an episode cost but it was also one of Fox’s highest rated shows. Did the viewer numbers not make up for the cost? https://twitter.com/deadline/status/1653112377028534288?s=46&t=odJBz29GLRivLlzea0wM4Q
Link. This is a familiar pattern. Remember Brooklyn 99 and the Mindy Project? They were cancelled by Fox for the same reason they cancelled 9-1-1, because Fox doesn't own those shows and won't see substantially large profits from subsequent episodes and it won't reap any benefits from their entries into syndication and streaming markets. NBC studios (called Burbank studios) owned Brooklyn 99 and Mindy Project, and 9-1-1 is owned by 20th Television which is a division of Disney that owns ABC channel, so it makes sense it's going to ABC.
Anyways, many shows were cancelled in their 6th season in recent years. Traditionally actors renegotiate their salary during the 6th season and usually networks and studios let them get away with it. But with The Great Recession just around the corner plus the writer strike, my guess networks and studios decided it's not worth it.

i realllly really hope des as a love interest will be a misdirect....and that's something that happened a lot on the mindy project too. every episode she would have a man (not saying it is a bad thing to be with a lot of ppl of course, it just started looking unrealistic and cartoonish to me personally and i didn't care about any of them). i genuinely cannot picture a universe in which a third love interest could work after investing so much into 2 existing ones with individual plotlines that still need to be explored so much! and in 2 seasons. AND ALSO OTHER CHARACTERS (oh it's not looking good...)
i don't understand how you can wrap things up like this. i honestly see the show taking 2 directions :
1) it's a misdirect and we get a satisfying ending with either ben or paxton or devi ending up alone
2) she ends up with des (???) or doesn't but messes up for the 28338th time and we all hate the ending and the show.

Velma Season 1 Review (Review for Weird Kev27)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy people and for this fine start of april we're looking at something that's been long overdue.
So something I've only expressed a little on this blog is that i'm a massive scooby doo fan. While I grew up with the world's greatest great dane and really loved mystery inc, over the last few years i've gone from simply appricating the series to being a massive fan with a decent amount of knowledge. Together with @jess-the-vampire we watched EVERY scooby do movie, we've binged most of the shows and i'ts given me an apprication for the franchise as a whole.
So naturally the first new series since i became a scooby head was a cause for .. cautious optimsim. Yeah while I liked Mindy Kaling's previous work with The Mindy Project and felt the idea of an adult scooby doo series had potetial the combination, i was tredpedatious as adult series can mean "excellently plotted comedy where you can have a plot about abusive parenting, bi erasure and the mafia in the same episode as a country set slaughter fest, said abusive parent putting dildo's everywhere because he assumes that's what gays like and an extra horny shark man who statistically has boned half of every room he's entered. "… and sometimes you get show's whose whole identities are random cruel violence, dickery and
Tumblr media
Sadly.. Velma ended up this way, with the trailers presenting a show that not only didn't really care for Scooby doo, but picked the most obvious ways to deconstruct it while loudly scremaing
Tumblr media
In lieu of actual adult conversations or themes. It had specks of those but it was mostly just obessed with proving how clever clever it was. So let's talk about tha tunder the cut eh?
Tumblr media
Yeah while we WILL be hanging around for Scooby Doo, we are not talking Velma.. yet. I haven't even braved it just yet, as a combination of the counltess dickheads crticizing it for being "woke"…
Tumblr media
The series making everyone but Fred POC was a GOOD idea .. it just seems couched in a lot of jabs that come off as them having never watched a damned scooby doo show past where are you. I'm not sayin gi'ts required to watch thousands of hours of scooby doo to make an SD property, but watching a FEW episodes of more recent series to make sure your stuff is fresh and checking to make sure yoru ideas are either new or a diffrent enough take on an idea to work. While i'm not sure if the writers of recent series like Mystery Inc, Be Cool and Guess Who? have seen EVERY scooby do thing, it's clear al lhave seen enough of the franchise and know it well enough to play with it, from making it a cosmic horror story , to a wacky comedy with Fred and Daph tweaked signifigantly, to a team up show that has Malcom McDowell take our heroes to a distopian future where Shaggy and Scooby have no tonly surivvieed this long but are fighting to the death.
Tumblr media
I will give Velma a shot eventually and likely cover it too, but for now me and Kev just weren't all that invested. He might have me cover it later and if he decides not to I might still just do it anyway, but for now that's just not something i'm going to be doing
Instead.. .we're covering something that DIDN'T get released. Yeah as a special treat i'm taking a quick look at Scooby Doo and Krypto Too. SDAKT was supposed to be another scooby doo direct to video film, coming out to allign with the Super PEts MOvie, which I also need to see at some point. Problem is it was made during WB"s Tire Fire years, and it along with a HEX GIRLS MOVIE MY GOD YOU MONSTERS WHY DID YOU CANCEL THIS, were scrapped, and the latter was nearly complete.
That would've been the end and given the project was never even ANNOUNCED, as is common as Warner only tends to announce sd movies a few months before release, and Warner's Habit of locking good animatoin in indiana jones vaults.
Thankfully some brave soul we still don't know leaked the film, which not only leaves potetial for more of the stuff they've refused to release to get out there, but was a nice hearty fuck you to a company and president who prides trying to stop bleeding money in the sleaziest way possible over actually making things tha tmake money. I"ve been vocal as hell about The Warner Bros Discovery Tire Fire so you better belive me and Jess watched this asap. And if WBD had a problem with that.. they PROBABLY shoudl've let the film actually come out then instead of destroying months and sometimes years of effort and locking it in crate to make 5 dollars, as their's legally nothing they coudl do. They did try to remove the film, but this being the internet once it was out there they couldn't undo it and it's already in the wind as it damn well should be.
So naturally when Kev, after several diffrent ideas I won't say in case we end up going with them at some point, suggested this I was all on board. But when you strip away all the controversy what do you get?
WEll you get a pretty decent Scooby Doo Team Up Film. Scooby Doo DC Team UPs are far from new, going as far back as the Scooby Doo Movies, and only increasing once warner started syndergizing it's propertie smore While a LOT of it is naturally fitting team ups with the world's greatest detectives including a full on reunion movie for batman brave and the bold that I love dearly, they've also teamed up with the flash, wonder woman and even had a dc comic ENTIRLEY DEDICATED to team ups that featured my boys the doom patrol among MANY other deeper cuts and currently have one just for batman and the bat family.
It's still weird though to see them team up with Krypto, but not unwelcome. It helps for me at least that as a big comcis nerd.. I fucking love Krypto and as a teen got a two pronged attack that made me a lifelong fan of the pooch: Krypto showed up in Geoff John's run of teen titans as Connor's loyal canine (with Clark having given Connor his dog), and a mostly realstic dog who just happens to have kryptonian powers nad wear a cape. The other was the opposite an da series that's only grown on me with time, Krypto the Super Dog. While meant more for the preshool set, Krypto was still a LOT of fun, going in a more silver age direction, throwing in things like Streaky, Supergirl's cat in the comics, and Ace the Bathound and best of all the Dog Stars of the Universe, who I was shocked to fine werent just made up here to serve as Krypto's own Legion of Super Heroes.. actually existed in the comics. Why they haven't been brought back I don't know. you look at a bucnh of dogs with weird super powers in space and tell me it's not gold.
So finding out this existed was great. And honestly even putting aside the stupid shelving.. it's a solid DTV Scooby Film. i've watched all of them, not hyperbole, and while i've seen far better, including the recently released trick or treat scooby doo, this is still a fun entry.
The plot is kinda simple: The Gang visit Metropolis just as the Justice League has gone missing and no other heroes exist in this universe because plot convience. Our heroes are summoned by Daphne's old friend Jimmy Olseon to help Lois Lane look into this. Lois is perfectly played here too being fast talking, no nonsense and only not investigating herself because 80 thigns are going on at once with all the supervillians running riot. Jimmy less so as he thinks hea nd daph are together and has been telling people such when they never reallyd ated. We also get Fred being jealous of which I have some notes on.
Tumblr media
I won't talk much about it. It's bad, it shoudl feel bad and the only saving grace is it's not DAPHNE IS JEALOUS OF SOMEONE BEING INTO FRED WHILE THEIR NOT TECHINCALLY A COUPLE PLOT #98. Seriously it happens a LOT. A LOTTTTTT.
We also get our usual parade of supsects: a foodtruck lady running challenge of the super fries, the local valet whose tired of super cars because Green Arrow apparently has a SECOND arrow car just for metropolis, and what have you. The main suspect and treat of the film though is Lex Luthor. Lex is played to hammy perfection, not only trying to buy the hall of justice but being open about being a buisnes scumbag and eventually being forcced by circumstance to work with our heroes, wtih him and velma playing off each other really well. Lex is easily the best part of the film. He also gets a great moment as while shockingly he's NOT behind it, his assitant mercy who in this continuity is in love with him and was tired of Lex being more buisness luthor and less mad scientest luthor was behind it to try and do an evil scheme since he wouldn't. I mean.. I can't see her complaint: Buisness scumbag luthor is STILL miles ahead of piss in a jar luthor.
Still it's a nice motive.. and Lex was not only AWARE the whole time , he only let it play out to see whta she could do and hacks her robots for her plan easily… then reveals he let her plan go ahead to buy time for his: to demolish the hall with giant robots. Naturally she loves this and they get together. It shows off both versions of luthor great: the cold buisness man who uses hsi money and cleverness as a weapon, and the mad genius who hates superman and wants to destroy something only tagnetally related to him out of spite. his evil dog rex even turns out to be a robot and knowing Krypto was around he put a chunk of kryponite in him and the robots
Tumblr media
Krypto himself.. works really well and is the heart of the film. While Luthor is EAISLY again the best part, Krypto's main traits are shown off: he's loyal, loves his master and the feeling is mutual. Krypto was left behind by clark for his own saftey after the fight that sent the group into the phantom zone, and it's clear all Krypto wants is his master back. He dosen't get a ton of characterization fo ra movie based on him, but it's nice seeing his inherent bravery and invunerbality contrasted with the gangs cowardice or his confusion when in one bit , Shaggy triggers the kitchen, the JLA's danger room , and it makes it into an actual kitchen, with his confusion bein ga nice hint at the gag. We also get a real solomon grundy who just wanted to pet dogs. And how can I not relate to a fellow swamp monster who just wants to pet dogs?
The climax is great, wtih our heroes and various red herrings stepping in, a truly climactic figh tnad hero much like his master powring the fuck through even at his weakest. We get a heartwarming reunion.
Scooby doo and Krypto Too isn't a top tier, one in a millon DTV scooby movie but it's still an excellent one. And while NO FILM deserves the sheving WBD heaped on it, this film is an easpecially galling example of that and if you can find it out there, go do so. It's a fun tight 90 minutes. We return to our reguarlly scheduled nonsense in an hour or so. Thanks for reading.

My Plans for This Week: 2/27 - 3/5
Inspired by @gritsandbrits' 9/9 - 9/15 week plans post from 2019
I decided to do this after my last weekend plans didn't go too well, as I've only managed to two of the things of my weekend plans list 2/24 - 2/26. Those two being watching @rainbott's Spellmania series on their YouTube channel and watching Mindy Kaling's Velma on watchcartoononline.tv while also writing down ideas for my Velma rewrite on Google Docs. Plus, it felt like an episode in a show where there's too much crammed into a single or few episodes. So, I decided to do these plans I didn't get to do this week, at least hopefully, that is. If not, then next week it is.
Also, today's my 19th birthday!!! Happy Birthday to Me!!! :) ^^
Draw my Sparkledog OC

The 7 best new and returning TV Shows in 2023
Tumblr media
We already have a list of 7 new and returning TV shows that should be put right on your must-watch list, so we can assure you that 2023 will be a fantastic year for TV shows. With new programs like the BBC's touching drama Best Interests and HBO's epic and horrifying The Last of Us in January, there is something for everyone. Along with returning favorites like You and Sex Education from Netflix, Clarkson's Farm is back on Prime Video. 1. Sex Education season 4 For more crazy antics and coming-of-age drama in 2023, Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, and Mimi Keene will all be back. The critically acclaimed teen drama's final season is anticipated (*sobs*), but it will also feature Schitt's Creek actor Dan Levy as Maeve's new Ivy League tutor Thomas Molloy. https://youtu.be/goke5cXZ3Ro 2. You season 4 As Joe, played by Penn Badgley, reluctantly turns into a detective in London after learning that he might not be the only murderer in town, he is accompanied by Ed Speelers (Downton Abbey), Charlotte Ritchie (Fresh Meat, Feel Good), Adam James (Vigil), and Charlotte Scott (Fresh Meat, Feel Good). Netflix will start streaming You season 4 part 1 on February 10. https://youtu.be/Xp30pyRW23U 3. Velma Release on January 12, HBO US broadcaster Max; UK broadcaster TBD Featuring: Constance Wu, Sam Richardson, and Mindy Kaling The most intelligent member of Scooby-team, Doo's Velma Dinkley (Mindy Kaling), has her origin tale in this animated series for adults. There is no news yet on whether Velma, a longtime LGBTQ+ icon and recently confirmed queer character, will be portrayed as such in Kaling's project, despite the fact that we know the show will contain a "love triangle". So let's hope. https://youtu.be/lHdtsWn7sgE 4. Daisy Jones & The Six Release: March 3, 2023, Prime Video Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, and Suki Waterhouse appear in the series. This miniseries, which was produced in the form of a mock-doc episode of MTV's Behind The Music, follows a fake rock band as they erupt and ultimately implode in 1970s Los Angeles. Expect plenty of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll since it is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid's best-selling book, which was partially inspired by the real-life highs and lows of Fleetwood Mac. https://youtu.be/s9kwIlRJNy0 5. Secret Invasion Availability: early in 2023, Disney+ Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley, and Samuel L. Jackson are the stars. Ben-Adir Do you recall Captain Marvel's shape-shifting aliens, the Skrulls? They will be the main subject of this new superhero program, which will depict a more nuanced and subdued side of Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. As a "crossover event series," there is a good chance that other beloved Marvel characters will make a surprise appearance. https://youtu.be/qZVTkn2NjS0 6. Masters of the Air Release: Apple TV+ in 2023 Featuring: Barry Keogh, Callum Turner, and Austin Butler This miniseries about World War II has a solid resume. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg serve as executive producers, and Cary Fukunaga of No Time to Die The director Joji Fukunaga is one of them. A talented ensemble of up-and-coming performers, led by Elvis actor Austin Butler, portrays the valiant "bomber boys" who fought the war in the air. https://youtu.be/aDyDg04x1W0 7. Poker Face Starring: Natasha Lyonne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Adrien Brody; release date: January 26, Peacock (US); broadcaster in the UK TBC This detective drama was conceptualized by Glass Onion director Rian Johnson and offers a fascinating idea. The lead role of Charlie Cale, a sleuth with an uncanny ability to detect deception, belongs to Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll). The 10-episode season has a "case-of-the-week" structure, making it a potential Murder, She Wrote replacement for the streaming era. https://youtu.be/UH5uGZ9SW7A Read the full article

Raquel Welch, the big-screen star of the 1960s and ’70s who gained fame in movies including Fantastic Voyage, One Million Years B.C., Myra Breckinridge, and many others, died today after a brief illness was confirmed by her reps at Media 4 Management.
Welch’s career spanned more than 50 years, 30 films, and scores of TV series and appearances, including about a dozen visits to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson spanning two decades and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Imagen Foundation in 2001.
Born Jo Raquel Tejada on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, Welch's family moved to San Diego when she was a toddler on a theatre arts scholarship, and she began her career as a local TV weathercaster before landing guest shots on classic TV series such as McHale's Navy, Bewitched, The Virginian, and others, including Cora in the wild 1966 sci-fi film Fantastic Voyage, which also starred Stephen Boyd and Edmund Gwenn and only had an hour before they returned.
The film won Oscars for its visual effects, art direction, and set decoration and became a cult classic with a 91% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Welch then starred as a clan cavewoman in the 1966 British film One Million Years B.C., another wild tale set in a time when humans and dinosaurs coexisted; a slightly censored version of the film was released in the United States, and the film became a TV staple in later years, inspiring her to star with Dudley Moore and Peter Cook in the London-set 1967 comedy Bedazzled and opposite James Stewart, Dean Martin, and George Kennedy in the 1968 western Bandoler.
Welch continued her big-screen career alongside some of the era's biggest stars, including Burt Reynolds in the 1972 cop comedy Fuzz, Richard Burton in Bluebeard the same year, and James Coburn, Richard Benjamin, and others in Herbert Ross' The Last of Sheila, written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins and starring Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, and Michael York in 1973.
That film earned Welch a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical, and it spawned a 1974 sequel, The Four Musketeers: Milady's Revenge. She also appeared in the 1976 ambulance-crew comedy Mother, Jugs & Speed, alongside Bill Cosby and Harvey Keitel; her other films from the era were Kansas City Bomber, a 1972 drama set in the then-popular world of roller derby; The Beloved (1971); and the western Hannie Caulder, which she co-starred in with Robert Culp and Ernest Borgnine.
Welch was never shy about fighting for herself and her place at the Hollywood table. In that context, she made a very different set of headlines in the 1980s when she sued MGM over being dumped from starring with Nick Nolte in Cannery Row to play an empathetic prostitute in the David S. Ward-helmed movie based on the work of John Steinbeck. Welch was booted off the project by the studio over a contract violation in which she insisted on having her hair and makeup done there.
MGM said no and replaced Welch with Debra Winger to make peace by taking another role, but after being rebuffed by the studio, then run by David Begelman, Welch hit back and sued MGM for $24 million.
Making headlines all over the world, Welch alleged in her suit that the studio had built the movie and its financing around her and then used the hair-and-makeup dispute as a way to get a younger actress in the hooker role through the courts and appeals, but Welch ultimately was awarded a $10 million verdict in 1987, which, of course, generated a whole new set of headlines for her.
By the late 1970s, Welch's film career had peaked, and she began doing more TV work in 1979, appearing in a couple of Season 2 Mork & Mindy episodes with Robin Williams, and she continued to appear in telefilms throughout the decade, including the title role in "The Legend of Walks Far Woman," a 1982 NBC telepic about a woman who murders her abusive husband, and the role of a successful woman whose husband is murdered.
She later did a memorable cameo as herself in 1994's Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, wrestling Leslie Nielsen's Lt. Frank Drebin onstage at the Oscars, and briefly appeared as Mrs. Windham-Vandermark herself in the classic 1997 Seinfeld episode "The Summer of George," which featured the actress mistakenly presenting a Tony Award to Michael Richards' Kramer, with unexpected repercussions.
Other 1990s TV guest roles included Evening Shade (reuniting with Reynolds), Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Lois & Clark, and multiple episodes of Spin City and C.P.W. Her small-screen credits since then include a recurring role on the 2002 PBS series American Family, which starred Edward James Olmos and Sonia Braga, along with 8 Simple Rules, CSI: Miami, the telefilm House of Versace, the short-lived CBS sitcom Welcome to the Captain, the Canadian comedy Date My Dad, and her career, Welch appeared on scores of TV talk, game, and awards show; hosted Saturday Night Live during its first season in 1976; was a presenter at multiple Academy Awards and Tony Awards ceremonies; appeared on Bob Hope comedy specials and toplined her own specials; in 1970, 1974, and the 1980 CBS special Raquel! showcased Welch’s comedy, dancing, and singing skills, earning a 51% share.
She also was a guest on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and talk or variety shows hosted by Oprah Winfrey, Craig Ferguson, Bonnie Hunt, Dick Cavett, Mike Douglas, Joey Bishop, Dean Martin, Merv Griffin, and others twice on Broadway: the first time in 1981, when she filled in for a vacationing Lauren Bacall in Woman of the Year 1997, and the second time in 1997, when she played the lead role of Victoria Grant in Victor/Victoria, replacing original star Julie Andrews.
Despite her Golden Globes win and nomination, Welch never earned an Oscar or Emmy nomination during her long career; other accolades include an ALMA Award in 2001, a Western Heritage Award for The Legend of Walks Far Woman, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1996 by her son, Damon Welch, and daughter, Tahnee Welch.

You’ve been doing press interviews for the show all week and had in turn been spending all week by Andrew’s side. You were partnered together because fans were already going crazy for your 2 characters and as a little easter egg for a possible future relationship between your characters. Even though none of your scenes together were particularly romantic as your characters were always bickering and pushing each other’s buttons, people were hooked on your chemistry and hoping for an enemies to lovers storyline and had coined your characters ship name as #Maxlynn. Your interviews with Andrew were gaining ridiculous amounts of views and fans were seemingly obsessed with every interaction you shared. You truly had a blast doing these interviews because it was really just like you and Andrew were hanging out and there happened to be a camera there.
Y/N Y/L/N and Andrew Garfield Answer the Web’s Most Searched Questions| WIRED
“Hi, my name is y/n y/l/n and I play Ash on Netflix’s ‘This is the Life’”
“My name is Andrew Garfield, I play Max and this is the Wired Autocomplete Interview” Andrew finishes before turning to you. “nailed it!” you put your hand out for a high five and he comedically throws his hand out and misses yours. “You guys won’t believe how many takes that intro took” he laughs shaking his head.
-
“Of course, I’ve googled myself. Who hasn’t?”  Andrew states. “I haven’t” you answer back. “seriously?” he asks incredulously.
“Yea, i’m scared that it’s just gonna be like people talking bad about me so i don’t check”
“Who could have anything bad to say about you? You’re quite literally the most perfect human ever and whoever thinks otherwise can come have a chat with me”
You laugh, “You’re ridiculous”
“ridiculously correct and handsome? awe thanks y/n”
“shut up and read the stupid board”
“do you guys see what i’m dealing with?  I give her a compliment and she bullies me and bosses me around” he says gesturing to you.
it’s okay, you thought, you’re definitely into that.
So WIRED asked y/n y/l/n and andrew garfield some of the internet’s burning questions
“So first we have- ‘is andrew garfield’- why do you get to go first” you start to which andrew shrugs and responds
“I dunno, it’s probably the patriarchy’s fault or something. uh ‘is andrew garfield... a nice guy” he laughs before turning to you and going “uhhh i dunno, you tell me, do you think i’m a nice guy?”
“eh i’d give you like 2 out of 5 stars” you joke
“oh how generous of you.”
“you know what i’ll bump it up to 3 stars because you were my marvel movie watching buddy on set”
“i love how I only get one additional star for watching movies with you literally every day for like 4 months” he says before pulling of the next piece of paper off. “oh speaking of marvel- ‘is andrew garfield going to play spiderman’- uh no? but if marvel or sony ever decide to revisit that character and would like to give me a call I’d do it in a heartbeat”
“I feel like I heavily influenced the frequency of this search” you added, amused.
“yea because y/n decided to tweet ‘andrew garfield playing peter parker when??’ and next thing I know I’m a spiderman fan cast”
“you’re welcome” you respond to which he just shakes his head and laughs.
“is andrew garfield british” he reads.
“no,”  you answer for him “it’s just one big elaborate prank that he’s kept going for 21 years”
Andrew plays along and responds with “y/n, you weren’t supposed to tell people that jeez” in a very convincing American accent.
-
“yay my turn!” you grab one of the boards. “I’m actually so excited for this, I watch these all the time. okay ‘who is y/n y/l/n playing’- um if you’re asking who am i playing in ‘this is the life’ that would be Ash Davis”
“Ashlynn” Andrew corrects.
“Yea but no one calls her that”
“Max calls her that”
“yup and she hates it”
“does she really though-”
“anyways she’s a total badass and like at least 37% cooler than I am in real life okay moving on. ‘who is y/n y/l/n dating’- I am actually married. married to the game.”
“only you would respond to that question like that”
“‘who is y/n y/l/n favorite person’ -hmm uhhh” andrew clears his throat comedically and starts not discreetly pointing to himself which makes you laugh before turning to the camera and answering “andrew russell garfield” to which he feigns surprise and starts acting as if he was accepting an award.
“wow, i really wasn’t expecting this honestly um i don’t really have anything prepared but to be named y/n y/l/n’s favorite person is such an honor truly and I’d just like to take a moment to thank-” he’s cut off by you covering his mouth with your hand which he decides to lick for shits and giggles.
“ew” you wipe your hand off on his shirt.
“oh don’t act grossed out” he responds without missing a beat.
-
“‘who is andrew garfield’- wow i mean who really knows. who are any of us really? what are we all doing here on this big rock”
“wow so deep”
“that’s what she said. uh thank you, I try. okay next one ‘who is andrew garfield’s celebrity crush’ uhh y/n y/l/n” he says throwing the scrap of paper over his shoulder
“I would’ve said harry styles but go off”
“but harry styles isn’t even your favorite person now is he?” to which you don’t respond and he just continues with “yea, that’s what I thought”
You take the board from him. “okay, last one ‘andrew garfield and y/n y/l/n together?’- well that is terrible grammar but you can see us together on ‘This is the Life’ on Netflix” you wink at the camera knowing that isn’t at all what the question was asking.
Andrew throws the board behind the two of you before pointing at the camera. “streaming now!”

Andrew Garfield and Y/n Y/l/n Read Thirst Tweets
“Hi, I’m Andrew Garfield” you begin in your best british accent.
“and I’m y/n y/l/n” he continues imitating your voice.
“and we are here with BuzzFeed to read some thirst tweets!”
-
“oh god here we go okay” andrew reaches his hand into the bucket. “‘garfielddd: andrew garfield is a precious bean, protect him’ awe that’s sweet. I see we’re starting off soft”
“did you guys get that from my twitter account cause i swear i’ve tweeted that at least 12 times” you joke before reaching into the bowl to get another slip.
“ ‘ashwarrior: y/n if you see this, i’m free on thursday if you want to hang out on thursday when i’m free on thursday if you want to hang out on thursday’ hmm something tells me that they wanna hang out with me on Thursday” you comment.
“really I wasn’t getting that vibe but okay” andrew says before picking another one.
“ ‘andrew garfield is literally the daddy of all daddies’ -so like am i some form of father god? i think i might be a bit too young for that now but tweet this again in like 20 years and I’ll gladly accept being the daddy of all daddies”
“being daddy is not an age but a mindset” you comment.  “but anyways moving on ‘y/n y/l/n if your legs ever get tired and you need somewhere to sit just know that my face is available to you for all of eternity’ wowww um thankyou? I think? My legs are good for now but if that changes I’ll have my people call your people” you respond with a wink at the camera.
“for all of eternity? wow. that’s kinda poetic if you think about it. oh god it’s my turn again?” andrew reaches for another tweet. “ ‘y/n’slefttoe: s.w.a.g. is an acronym for sex with andrew garfield’ That one makes both of you laugh.
“so true user my left toe” you add. “There are a lot of these wow” you comment swirling your hand around the bowl.
“wait I wanna read one of yours”
“okay go ahead” you tilt the bowl toward him to reach in and grab one.
“oh wow this one is- are people really just his blatantly horny on the internet my god. ‘maxlynn4ever: if y/n y/l/n ever tried to kill me’ i knew these were gonna get violent! they always get violent! ‘if y/n y/l/n ever. tried to kill me by choking me to death i’d probably have an orgasm before passing out’ jesus christ”
Your jaw drops “damn that’s hardcore”
“yeaaa... i get it though”
“andrew!”
“i’m joking, i’m joking!”
“it’s too late, it’s already been screen recorded and is being made into an edit intro as we speak. okay i’ll do one of yours, and i’ll make direct eye contact with you so you get embarrassed”
“don’t do that”
“too late, ‘warnery/ns: the rumors are true, i am a slut for andrew garfield’ hey aren’t we all?”
Andrew starts shaking his head, his cheeks slightly red. “that one got screen recorded for sure.” he says before turning to the camera to address the commenter “but thank you? how generous? I promise I will only be respectful”
-
“These ones are for both of us?” you ask as an assistant hands you another bowl from off screen.
“oh god” andrew starts “okay here we go. how did you guys even find all these”
“it wasn’t that hard!” you hear and intern yell from somewhere.
Andrew grabs a slip. “these are just getting progressively more horny.  ‘y/ngarfieldd: my dream is to get railed by andrew garfield while y/n y/l/n rides my face and i am not sorry about it!!!’”
“why does everyone want me to sit on their face?”
Andrew looks like he’s actually about to answer your question so before he says anything incriminating you grab another tweet to start reading.
“ ‘rosefory/n: the sheer amount of bi panic I experienced during every y/n and andrew scene like do y’all need a dog i can bark’”
“i don’t think i know how to respond to that. okay last one ‘andybabyy: I would pay unthinkable amounts of money for y/n y/l/n and andrew garfield to-’  nope. absolutely not. that’s enough of that.” Andrew says ripping up the piece of paper.
“waittt what did it say”
“the world may never know! Thank you guys so much for all your thirst tweets. I’m Andrew Garfield”
“I’m y/n y/l/n and go watch ‘This is the Life’ streaming now on Netflix!”

You and Andrew had been attached at the hip all day working, but were honestly having a blast with these interviews. You were now on location for The Late Late Show with James Corden and you and andrew were being interviewed later tonight. You’re currently standing outside on the lot trying to calm yourself down. You’ve never done an interview for live television before.
“nervous?” you hear a voice ask from behind you, turning to meet a smiling andrew.
“a little bit. i just- it’s live ya know.  no cuts or anything, I’m just a little worried”
“hey,” he starts while pulling you in for a much needed hug “you’re gonna be amazing and everyone is going to love you, alright?”
“okay” you mutter into the crook of his neck.
“nope. not good enough. I want you to say it” he says poking your side.
“mm say what”
“that you’re amazing”
“oh i’m not doing that” you respond to which he pulls away from the hug but still holds you in his arms.
“oh yeah? you sure about that?” he challenges looking down at you.
“yup”
“see i didn’t want to have to do this but now you’ve forced my hand”
“what are you even-” you’re cut off my andrew moving his hands to your ribs, tickling you as you erupt into a fit of giggles. You try to escape from his little surprise attack but andrew keeps you secure in his arms.
“okay! okay! okay!” you squeal now out of breath.
“i’m waiting” he teases.
You sigh before muttering a barely audible ‘i’m amazing’ to which andrew. brings his face closer to yours tapping his ear.
“i’m sorry, what was that?” he teases.
“i’m amazing.”
“hell yeah, you are”
And you’re both doing that thing again. That thing when you’re standing far too close, looking at each other a little too longingly. And you really want to kiss him but all of that was only supposed to be a one time thing. But that doesn’t stop you from thinking about it: his hands everywhere, his words, his mouth. It was supposed to help you ‘get him out of your system’ but now knowing how good you could make each other feel only seemed to strengthen the tension. And you know it’s against the rules and a bad idea but andrew’s presence tends to make you really fucking stupid so you ask. anyway:
“we uh- have a few hours to kill. do you wanna hang out in my dressing room and we can watch a movie or something?” or something
Andrew blinks a few times, unsure if you’re invitation was actually to watch a movie or if there was more emphasis on the ‘or something’ but to be honest you didn’t know either and his brain also turns to mush when he’s near you so he just starts nodding before responding as calmly as he can given the way his heart is racing,
“yea totally”
