Hello!! Could I request a touch-starved Leo with Jonas where maybe Jonas doesn’t believe Leo when he says he says he doesn’t feel good. He makes a mean remark or something but Leo has an upset bloated belly (no emeto, but gassy) and just wants comfort from Jonas (maybe he feels like he doesn’t deserve it - bc of trauma or smth) And Jonas feels guilty? Ending in lots of cuddles and tummy rubs?! Thank you so much ❤️
"It won't kill you, stop whining," Jonah rolled his eyes as he walked past Leo, fixing his tie on the mirror. His boyfriend had been sitting at the edge of the bed for the past 20 minutes, only half dressed. He had his social shirt all buttoned up, but he still wasn't wearing anything but boxers and his own tie hung limply around his neck. Jonah glared at the reflection, "Leo."
"Jon, you don't need me there, c'mon-"
"I want you there," Jonah frowned, "Leo, please?"
The blonde met him with a steely glare, blue eyes very striking against his face and for a second Jonah's will wavered. Leo really didn't seem to be just playing it up to miss the event... But then his boyfriend nodded, having lost the battle of egos and turned around to grab his trousers carefully separated and ironed already.
Jonah gulped down the sudden bad taste in his mouth and shook his head. He couldn't let Leo have his way, if it was up to him they'd never socialize ever.
It was the opening night of an art gallery and Jonah really loved the art scene, much more than he enjoyed chips and beers with the guys. Obviously he didn't say that last part out loud, but it was an open secret.
Leo was tagging along like a sullen shadow as they entered the modern building. The lights had been dimmed in the main hall, then the whole place had been separated in sections, the blue area, the pink one and so forth.
"This is gorgeous," Jonah all but beamed, reaching behind him without looking, in order to take Leo's hand, but he found nothing but air. He frowned, glancing over his shoulder and his happiness considerably diminished. Leo had his arms crossed to his chest, a painful frown on.
A pang of annoyance hit him and Jon breathed out forcefully, "really? At least try to enjoy it."
Leo glared at him, unimpressed, "I'm here, am I not?"
"You're acting like a toddler," Jonah hissed back, before a familiar figure walked behind his boyfriend and he pushed the argument aside, opening a smile and calling out, "Wendy, hey!"
Wendy was clad in a silver-blue dress, arm in arm with a friend and she waved and beamed as Jonah circled Leo and went to hug her.
Leo glared in her direction, somehow she was always there when he wanted her there the least, he thought sourly, watching Jon pull her in a hug and then shake her friend's hand enthusiastically.
He wasn't just being annoying for no reason, Leo scowled, he had tried multiple times to tell Jon he'd much rather be at home. Not only these events made him uncomfortable, but while he could normally suck it up, tonight his belly really didn't feel well and it was hard to concentrate on being the perfect boyfriend.
He moved away from the trio, not bothering to greet Wendy. It was no secret between the two of them that Leo didn't like her and he wouldn't be all smiles just because Jon wanted him to.
Instead he walked to the other side of the gallery, to the green section and leaned on a pillar, sourly doom scrolling his instagram account and trying not to think of the burning jealousy in his gut and the crampy sensation that was spreading all over.
His trousers were digging in him, but he couldn't possibly loosen them or do anything about it. He scrolled past a picture. One of his teachers whom he followed was posting educative stuff about Law. He pushed the slides, liked it and scrolled past it without reading a word. Next post was Lucas', it was a video of him leaning against his apartment's bathroom door, which was closed and the noise of Bella singing faintly over the shower could be heard through it. He had put a bunch of fire emojis all over it. They were sickening adorable.
Leo rubbed at his chest, dislodging a small, breathy burp and he let it out slowly, glancing up. Jonah was nowhere to be found. Great.
He had no idea who were the next two people on his feed and then he ended up getting lost in his recommended videos -
"Champagne, sir?"
Leo's startled at the question, nearly dropping his phone. His chest rumbled with a burp, he swallowed it back down and it hurt.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Champagne, sir?" the waiter repeated and Leo felt an urge to laugh hysterically. He couldn't count in one hand the amount of times he had been in the other side of this interaction.
"Uh - Yeah, yeah, thanks," he said awkwardly, taking the champagne flute and starting to sip on it. The bubbles went up to his nose. Sat heavily in his chest, refusing to go down.
He swallowed a burp back down again, feeling cold sweat start to collect on his brow. His stomach hurt. Whatever he had had for lunch, it was truly upsetting it and he was terrified that nausea was soon to follow the whiny gurgles that were making their way around his belly.
"Hi," Wendy's voice interrupted his musings and Leo glared at her as she came to stand elbow to elbow with him, looking ahead as if she was admiring the photography framed before them, "goodnight to you too."
"Uhm," Leo rolled his eyes, took another sip of the champagne, which he immediately regretted, "what do you want, Wendy?"
She raised a perfecty manicured eyebrow, "Geez, calm down, Leo. I just wanted to make small talk."
"We don't have to small talk," he scoffed, then couldn't help but grab at his stomach as a painful gurgle ran through it, queasiness following suit.
She was studying him still, hazel eyes glued to his face, "...right" Wendy said skeptically, "so what are you doing here? I thought you were Jon's date?"
"I am," Leo glared at her, running a shaky hand through his hair and forcing the saliva pooling in his mouth backdown by taking yet another regretful champagne sip, "of course I am, why are you asking?"
"You're not with him," she shrugged, "well, you don't have to be tied by the hip, kinda antiquated on my part to say so," the jab was clear, "some couples are a little too clingy if you ask me."
"I didn't," Leo scoffed, "Wendy, did you want something or did you go out of your way to pe-" he cut himself off when a wet burp pushed past his lips, turning frothy and disgusting at the end. Tasting like bitter coffee and champagne. Oh yeah, he hadn't had lunch, Leo remembered. He had been stuck at the library all day, living off coffee.
He rushed a hand up to cover his mouth and kept it clasped there for a couple seconds as he swallowed down the nausea, eyes squeezed shut. When he opened his eyes, Wendy was still staring at him, unfazed.
She squinted at him, "you were saying?"
"Please," Leo rubbed a hand over his face, tired and noticing how clammy he was, "leave me alone."
"Alright," she said a little too cheery, raising her hands in mock surrender, "can't say I didn't try to be friendly."
He huffed, "very friendly," and watched as she turned around and walked away from him... And straight to Jon, across the room, who had just been chatting with her friend.
"Shit," Leo grumbled, watching as Wendy grabbed Jon's grey blazer and pulled him aside politely, before prompting starting to rant. Probably going on and on about how rude he was, Leo thought with a renewed sense of nausea, as Jon looked past Wendy's naked shoulders and to the spot where he was standing.
It felt like he had been caught doing something terrible, even if in reality he had just been standing there. He felt an urge to run, from the intense manner Jonah was looking at him. His boyfriend planted a reassuring hand on Wendy's shoulder, then started to walk towards him, an angry frown on.
"Leo."
"I swear she fucking started it," Leo defended himself, feeling even more shitty that he had to defend himself to his own boyfriend, but Jonah only scoffed.
"Leo."
"It's not my fault she seemingly hates me for no good reason. I swear she's half in lo-"
"Leo," Jonah's voice was an octave higher, more harsh, "Wendy said you're sick."
"...What?" he mumbled, confused, stomach pain forgotten, anger too, "what...?"
"She said I'm a dick for dragging you here when you're clearly sick," Jonah moved awkwardly from side to side, looking him up and down, "so are you?"
Leo glanced over his shoulder, to where Wendy was standing across the room, drinking champagne with her friend, pretending to be blissfully unaware, "No, I'm fi-" he started to lie, only for another sick burp to press at his throat. He cupped his mouth and tried to swallow it back in, but it was to no avail. Gross, warm champagne flooded his mouth and he swallowed it down, gagging. Once he opened his eyes again, Jonah looked like he had just assassinated his puppy right in front of him.
"Jon-"
"Bloody hell, Leo," Jonah groaned, crossing the space between them, "I'm so sorry, I should've - Shit, I should've heard you, I'm so sorry-"
He felt ill for a whole different reason now. Vindicated, yes, but also just guilty that he was ruining Jonah's night. His stomach churned even more aggressively and Leo pressed the heel of his head to his forehead, "I'm sorry..."
"Oh shut up," Jonah scoffed, cupping his face, thumbs coming up to smooth his brows, taking him in, "let's go home, alright?"
"I can go home on my own-"
Jonah's whole face fell and if Leo hadn't been looking at him, he wouldn't have caught it. The hurt, fear and disappointment all in one, quickly masked away by careful indifference.
"You don't want me to go?"
"I didn't say that, you idiot," Leo groaned, then decided he was done being polite and leaned in, pressing his face to Jonah's peck and muffling a sick burp against his jacket, "do you want to come?"
He could almost hear Jonah eyerolling. Instead his hand came to rest on Leo's nape, rubbing little circles there as he carefully guided them, never once pulling Leo away even though it made walking very difficult.
It was a nice night, the type that wasn't too warm, but wasn't cold either and Leo only pulled back once they were outside. He rubbed at his eyes, breathing deeply through his nose.
"I'm sorry, Jon... We can come tomorrow to check it out, I promise-"
"Please stop," Jonah sighed, opening the car door for him, "get in."
Leo obeyed without a comment, unsure if Jon was annoyed or not, unsure if he was annoyed or not. He should be, rigth?
Instead he leaned in and pressed his forehead to the dashboard of Jon's fancy sports car, undoing the fly of his social pants and groaning as it brought a tiny spark of relief.
He heard as the driver's door snapped shut, then felt Jon's hand in his hair, voice smooth and calm as he said, "what's wrong, baby?"
"My belly really hurts," Leo groaned, sinking his fingers on his normally flat stomach. It was tender to the touch, too warm, "I feel sick, Jon."
"Gonna hurl sick?" Jon asked wearily, but for once it wasn't as much like he was worried about himself, much more about his boyfriend, "Leo?"
"I don't know," the blonde sighed, "not sure."
"Okay," Jon squeezed his shoulder, "we'll be home in a minute, I promise."
"Alright," Leo nodded, keeping his head down, arms wrapped around his unhappy, bloated belly.
He was thankful that Jonah was true to his word and that his apartment building was just around the corner, because the short ten minutes long drive was enough to heighten his carsickness and the moment the car came to a stop, Leo pushed the door open and turned around, retching towards the concrete ground.
He didn't bring up anything, just some horrible burps that hurt his throat and made his nose burn, and the nausea was still present when he saw from the corner of his eye as Jonah circled the car and crouched down next to him, possible vomit be damned.
"Leo, hey," he rubbed his leg, "let's go inside, you need to lie down."
"I feel sick," he shook his head, trying to communicate he was terrified of puking in Jon's extra fancy elevator, but his boyfriend only sighed and pushed the hair off his eyes, wiping the perspiration away.
"I know, baby, but sitting here won't help... I don't think you're gonna throw up."
"You can't know," Leo groaned, digging in his stomach and bringing up another sick burp, turning his face away just in time to avoid belching on Jonah's face, "I feel really sick, Jon."
"I know, I know, I'm sorry," Jonah sighed, then didn't wait for a response, pulling him to his feet, "lean on me, it'll be just a second."
Leo gulped down at the movement, hugging himself as if his stomach was detached from the rest of him and would somehow fall off if he didn't.
Jonah was terribly quiet during the entire trip up, even when they entered the apartment and Leo headed for the bathroom, instead of the bed.
He allowed him a minute of privacy, taking his sweet time in the bedroom and Leo crouched down in front of the toilet, staring at the swirling water and trying to force up whatever was making his belly so sick. He coughed and spluttered, burping again, but despite his burps ending wet and horrible, no vomit came up.
"Baby," Jonah planted a hand on his shoulder, holding his bicep, "I don't think you'll be sick, come to bed."
"I don't wanna puke in your bed," Leo all but whined, dignity quickly starting to fade the sicker he felt, "I already ruined your night-"
"I ruined your night," Jonah corrected him sharply, "don't you dare twist this around. We could've spent it in and I bet you wouldn't be feeling half as wretched," he ushered Leo up and back into the bedroom, "stop caring about the bed, it's not important."
"It is-"
"Leo, for fuck's sake!" Jonah snapped at him, only to wince at his own tone, breathing in, "the bed isn't important, alright? Can you please lie down so I can help?"
Leo sighed, obeying but not without throwing Jon a dirty look, "just because you said please."
Jonah's frustrated, angry frown melted into an amused smile and he moved closer. He was no longer in his tux, had already changed into silk pijama pants and a flimsy tanktop. His hands went for Leo's shirt first, undoing the buttons, since the tie had already been undone in the elevator ride up.
"Oh... Leo..." Jonah said quietly, unhappily as he got a decent look of his boyfriend's belly. Just like Leo imagined, it was bloated, very bloated, gurgling non-stop and slightly blushy too, pushing against the elastic band of his boxers, "that can't feel good."
"It doesn't," Leo grunted, digging his fingers on his sides and forcing up another burp, "feels tight as fuck."
Jonah glanced up, pulling on his pants, "do you want me to rub it?" it was a genuine question and Leo blushed, cursing the way his whole face turned red.
"Sure...?"
"Okay, lie down," Jon nodded, finishing undressing him and then crawling on the bed next to him and rolling onto his side, planting a large hand on top of Leo's bloated belly. The light weight pushed up another burp and the blonde froze, swallowing in.
"Can you get me the bin?"
"You're not gonna be sick," Jonah scoffed, but instead of arguing he rolled away and grabbed the paper wastebasket he left across the room, handing it to him. Leo stared at the two receipts on the bottom, burping towards it, before moving on the bed so he was closer to Jon and there was space to keep the bin right under his left arm, curled near him.
Jonah planted a kiss on his naked bicep, fingers brushing up and down his taunt stomach, the muscles tight against his skin. He drummed his fingers on the side and sighed, "you're so bloated..."
"Uhm," Leo answered eloquently, closing his eyes to avoid looking at him. He was still blushing, "sor-"
"You've got to stop apologizing," Jonah scoffed, pressing under his navel, rubbing his thumb around and popping a pocket of air. A sick, loud and long burp exploded out of Leo's mouth and the man sat up further in bed, reflux burning his throat.
"That hurt..."
"Did it help with the queasiness though?" Jon asked, staring at his domed belly as if it was a puzzle piece.
Leo shrugged, "not sure..."
Only to feel Jonah's fingers pressing in, never releasing the pressure as they dragged from the sides of his belly towards the navel. A gurgle came up, so loud that Jon heard it and Leo blushed even more.
"What did you eat to upset your stomach so badly?" Jon frowned, thumping lightly on the sides and causing a string of small, wet belches to roll out of his boyfriend. Leo rested his hand over Jonah's, gagging.
"Slow, babe, be gentle..."
"Sorry," it was Jonah's turn to apologize as he resumed to a more delicate belly rub, "so?"
"Nothing," Leo thumped on his chest, trying to unstuck a big burp he could feel was there, "I only had coffee since breakfast."
It was the wrong thing to say, Jonah's hands stopped moving, the steel flooding his hazel eyes and making them much more green than brown, "you're joking."
"Uh-"
"Leo!" Jonah cried out, sitting straight up on the bed, "it's been hours - It's no wonder you're sick!"
"I'm not sick," Leo winced, leaning forward to hang his head between his knees and squeezing his belly, "just gassy and queasy-"
"...Oh fucking hate to break it to you but that classifi-"
Leo's chest jostled with an aborted heave and he grabbed the bin with trembling hands, burying his face in it and gagging once, twice - Then a horrible belch echoed in the plastic bucket.
He pulled back after a second, looking pastier than before, "feels... Feels better now."
Jonah let out a sigh, "you're unbelievable..." he pulled Leo back down, snuggling next to him and once again planting a hand on his gurgling stomach, taking care to be gentler this time, "...we're having breakfast together tomorrow," he leaned in, planting a kiss on Leo's temple, "and lunch and dinner."
"Aww he cares," Leo smiled, cheeks all flushed pink and Jonah rolled his eyes, squeezing his tummy a little harder and causing him to burp again.
"Shut up."

Hello! Why do you think Carlisle likes Aro? (Love your meta btw!)
This blog lasted 25 days before becoming an Aro/Carlisle blog. The sanity was nice while it lasted, I suppose.
Oh well, I embrace my trash ship.
(Anon is referring to this post)
(This one is also relevant)
So, while on Aro’s end it was a case of “did the gods just give me my very own Enkidu?”, for Carlisle we must look at the circumstances. The Carlisle Cullen who walked into Volterra is not the Carlisle Cullen who works at Forks General.
Carlisle was a demon-hunting priest who brought his religion into his new life. Having no idea what he’d just become, apart from the obvious things like “I desperately want to kill people for their blood” and “I sparkle?!”, many of the things that are obvious to us would not be at all obvious to him. His only experience with other demons was the slum-dweller that killed him. It was brutal, and three other people from his parish were murdered as well. He’d been able to track the vampire down, something I can only take that to mean that the vampire used his parish for hunting grounds. He’s so horrified by what he’s become that he tries to destroy himself. This fails, and instead he finds a way out that lets him live without having to kill, and with that comes to the realization that vampires retain their souls (which is for another post).
My point being, Carlisle wakes up as a demon, and has no way of knowing how any of this works, nor of how to explain the fact that he is able to retain his soul. It’s telling that even after centuries of being a vampire he still thought something might be fundamentally different about him, as he chose to turn Edward by simulating his own transformation, even though it meant more pain for Edward. In other words, Carlisle was not guaranteed that his experience was universal. By the time we meet him in canon he’s wonderfully friendly to everybody regardless of what they eat, but I strongly doubt he got from point “Demons are monsters and I’ll rally a mob to lynch them!” to “Vampires are people who sadly eat other people.” right away.
So, you have freshly immortal Carlisle Cullen wandering around Europe with no way of knowing that other vampires are as (for lack of a better word) human as he is. How can they be, when they choose to eat people? (My personal headcanon is that he went by a Persephone theory, and figured that by resisting human blood he’d remained a man.)
It was this Carlisle who met Aro and the other Volturi. According to Edward (I unfortunately don’t have Twilight with me so I can’t quote his exact words), they were the ones who showed him that vampires can in fact be sophisticated.
Sophisticated. Not just as in Aro, Marcus, and Caius eat their virgins with some fava beans and a nice chianti, but as in they’re civilized and intelligent beings. Carlisle was no longer a one lone freak who somehow retained his soul while everyone else went full Buffy vampire, or any other such theory. I can’t even imagine the impact that must have had on a young Carlisle who would have been even lonelier than the Carlisle who found Edward in Chicago. That Carlisle at least had friends, this younger version had absolutely nobody.
Aro changed that.
More than being sophisticated, Aro turned out to be a kindred spirit, an absolutely brilliant mind and a generous host. Carlisle chose to live with him for decades, leaving only because of their dietary differences. And even if people disagree with me with all of the above, I don’t think anyone can argue that this one isn’t huge.
Of all the people Carlisle knows in canon, Aro is the only one he stayed with just for Aro’s own sake. Carlisle loves the Cullens dearly, but the cornerstone holding them together is their shared diet, and the fact that Carlisle turned four of them, the other two joined. He did not happen upon them and then like them so much that he decided to move in. As for his other friends, he cares for them all, but he didn’t share decades of his life with them.
Regardless of how we’re interpreting their relationship (as in, platonic, UST, or raging homosexual affair), I don’t think anyone can dispute that Carlisle and Aro are each other’s best friends.
But beyond proving that vampires aren’t all sewer-dwelling, priest-eating rascals, what exactly made Aro so special?
I’ll just list his qualities in no particular order.
Sophistication This guy is a lover of the arts and of knowledge. His gallery and library must have been the most extensive and diverse in the world, and it probably still is. I can’t even begin to imagine the wealth of knowledge and treasures that Aro must have collected over the years. If the Holy Grail exists within the world of Twilight, Aro has it. Where I’m headed with this, is that not only would Aro’s collection be the coolest thing ever to Carlisle, but also that this was a time when the number of books and an art collection was a sign of high class, of intellectualism, of all things fine and noble that was considered virtuous. Aro acts very much like wealthy European nobility, he even lives in Italy, the cultural epicenter of the Western world of old. He physically could not have been more impressive to Carlisle.
Kind of a continuation of the previous point: Aro is from Ancient Greece (well, he’s Myceanaean, but same difference to a “You predate Homer?!” starstruck Carlisle). Ancient Greece was the ultimate, perfect, civilization to Europe, and Carlisle got to Volterra just ahead of the Enlightenment. This alone would have made him so unbelievably cool to Carlisle.
Nerd I think this one speaks for itself. Carlisle is an unbelievable nerd, an inquisitive mind who’ll study anything and everything, and in Aro he found someone who also has an inquisitive mind and will study anything and everything. They’re both very intelligent. Carlisle went from being that sad whale that sings on a frequency no other whales can hear, to having someone who just got it.
His gift So you’re all gonna have to stay with me on this one. Aro’s gift is one most people would find very invasive, which as I touched upon in one of the posts linked above must be very isolating. And yet we know from canon that Carlisle has no problem at all with Edward reading his mind all the time, and more, if Aro reading his mind was a problem then Aro and Marcus would both have known, and I doubt their friendship would have worked out. So, I think that Carlisle not only didn’t mind having his every thought read, but that this was an actively good thing. Because what is less lonely than the company of one who knows you as intimately as you know yourself? To be friends with Aro is to be truly understood, known more deeply than anyone else can ever know you. And to someone who seeks companionship as much as Carlisle does, I imagine this is an extremely attractive feature.
Offer of friendship Carlisle would have been hopelessly lonely when he met Aro. And as no one else is mentioned as being close to him, Jane hadn’t even met him which I find pretty telling of how he interacted (or didn’t interact) with the Guard, and he wouldn’t yet have any of his other friends that he later made, he only had Aro.
He enforcers a law that keeps the known world from descending into chaos Human civilization wouldn’t last a day without the Volturi. There would be nothing stopping vampires from taking out entire villages in one go, immortal children would be everywhere, and the newborn armies would spread like wildfire. In the world of Twilight, the Volturi are a necessary evil. And Aro is their leader. The fact that he not only keeps the world together, an ungrateful task with no end in sight, but had the idea to create a law in the first place would make him all the more amazing to Carlisle.
And I’m sure there’s more that is currently slipping my mind.
Just, Aro is on every level the most impressive, awe-inspiring, and dare I say dazzling, that anyone can be to Carlisle. And he came into Carlisle’s life at the best possible moment. If he’d agreed to do the animal diet, Carlisle would have stayed. If he wanted to seduce Carlisle, I think he’d succeed. I also think that their time together was far more formative for the person Carlisle became than anyone gives Aro credit for.
(And if Carlisle had never found anyone who’d share the diet, he would eventually have returned. I imagine Aro thought the same, but that’s for another post.)
Oh, and last bit - in Breaking Dawn we get this beautiful moment where Carlisle learns that Aro robbed the British royal family, and he just goes, “yup, that’s my guy”. Even after Eclipse, he remains fond of Aro. I mean, there’s also the fact that he’s been lugging around this giant painting for centuries, even at a time when he didn’t have a house and I can only speculate as to where he was keeping it.
Of course, over the course of Eclipse and Breaking Dawn everything goes to hell, but that’s for another post.
TL;DR, Carlisle went from a priest’s son to living with an evil vampire overlord for decades because he’s just that great, in the present he keeps a giant painting of him in his office. I feel it’s safe to assume he likes the man.
(Edited on the 13th of April to fix some phrasing and add a link)

Rosalie/Renata? I would love if you could elaborate
@therealvinelle and I had an offhand mention of Rosalie/Renata in the last chapter of "For the Love of a Woman" in Alice's prophecy of doom. The crowd went wild, and we got asks like this.
Here's a post expanding more on that particular story.
With that, onto your question.
Possible But Unlikely
For the Love of a Woman had very specific circumstances that put it in a very strange place. I don't see this happening in canon or even canon tangential AU. Seriously weird things have to happen before we can get here.
Why Not Canon?
Rosalie never meets Renata until the Breaking Dawn trial. Even then, Renata is hardly the person Rosalie is going to notice on the battlefied. The same goes for Renata, whose focus is going to be on the not-quite-immortal child, Carlisle, Edward, and Bella. Rosalie is just the other Cullen who has no gift and is no threat.
After that point the Cullens and Volturi are enemies, neither will think of each other fondly and even if they do somehow happen to end up stuck together--I imagine there's no fond feelings between them.
Too much bad blood.
Why Not Canon Tangential AU?
While I think Rosalie and Emmet have problems, they're also one of the most solid relationships among the Cullens. More, Rosalie is dependent on him in canon. He is her pillar of support, someone she utterly adores, and it would never occur to him to leave him. He, similarly, is very fond of her.
Their relationship has severe issues, but it is a relationship, without some catastrophic interference grander even than Bella's appearance in their lives (which caused a whole bunch of nastiness to surface for everybody) I don't see them breaking up.
Which means Rosalie's eye is never going to wander elsewhere.
Not to mention that Renata, at a glance, isn't what Rosalie wants.
Renata is not on the diet, she does not live a human life at all, and she works for the most vampire vampires in existence and is wholly dedicated to the cause. Throughout the books, it becomes clear that the Cullens aren't quite sure what to make of vampires not on the diet. Some of them are counted as friends, yes (though they're Carlisle and Jasper's friends), but it's never really comfortable to be around them. They're unenlightened beings.
Unless Rosalie has lost everything including her worldview, she's not going to go for a vampire not on the diet. Especially not someone in the Volturi guard.
As for Renata, she's married to work. This is more headcanon, though the books point in this direction, but it seems that like Rosalie Renata went through significant sexual trauma. Unlike Rosalie, she didn't seem to find someone else, instead she found Aro and her position in the guard. Starting a relationship would mean potentially being less effective as she'd have to split time between work and being with her partner.
And I don't see Rosalie, who would effectively be a stranger very clearly judging the Volturi for the diet, would appeal to her in that way. Especially when Rosalie would very clearly be a guest in Renata's life and little more than that.
So How Could It Happen?
Rosalie's universe implodes.
She and Emmett fall apart (whether she leaves him or him her doesn't matter in this case, what matters is her pillar of emotional support is completely gone), for whatever reason she turns to Volterra as the only place left for her to go (which means Carlisle has probably relocated there), and her entire worldview has been dumped on its head (vegetarianism no longer equates morality, the monogamous relationships she'd taken for granted fell apart around her, etc. I imagine Edward did something terrible and every single mated pair in the Cullens fell to pieces)
Rosalie arrives in Volterra, an emotional wreck who doesn't know who she or her family even are anymore and has to come to grips with her own personal trauma as well as the fact that the world is--not what she thought it was.
With Rosalie and others more permanent members of Volterra, and depending on what's known of various histories, Renata may then reach out in friendship and at that point something can blossom.
But it would take a lot to get there.

"Lord Tariq and I were discussing that very thing last night over dinner." Lauren explained. "We both hope that Prince Liam is thinking of who is truly best for the citizens of Cordonia."
Ana and the rest of the reporters continued to throw questions out to her.
"Is it true you are no longer a part of The Earl's Undoing?"
"Yes, it is." She answered with a smile. "Once I met Lord Tariq, my heart was too focused on him rather than acting. I hope my fans can forgive me for following my heart."
"How has this affected your relationship with Thomas Hunt?" Ana asked.
Lauren laughed and shook her head. "Thomas and I only had a professional, working relationship. All those rumors about us spending every moment together are ridiculous. He is a happily married man and I would never try to tempt him away from Lady Amanda. There is only one man that I have had any type of love for and that is Lord Tariq. I would like to think that like Thomas, I too have managed to capture the heart of a Cordonian.
One of the younger reporters scratched his head. "Wait a minute, Ms. Benefield. Weren't you the one that called us with offers of sharing what you and his grace had privately together?"
Her smile became brittle while trying not to scream at the man. "You're mistaken. I only called to talk about our upcoming film. I would never slander someone like Lord and Lady Hunt."
"But--" he stared at Ana when she elbowed him. The seasoned reporter shook her head and continued to question Lauren about Tariq.
"Are we going to hear details about a possible wedding soon?"
Lauren's smile brightened. "I believe we will all be pleasantly surprised."
_______________
"I would love to knock those perfectly capped teeth out of her mouth." Nadia clinched her fist.
"Babe, you're going ultra violent again." Maxwell warned.
Riley and Hana stood with them and quietly observed Tariq join Lauren to answer more questions.
"Where are Thomas and Amanda?" Hana asked once she checked no one was close enough to overhear her.
"Er...well..." Maxwell stuttered.
"While scouting out locations to film, they decided to spend some special couple time alone. With all the Lauren mess, they needed a moment to remind them of what they have." Nadia promptly answered. She ignored the look Maxwell gave her for bending the truth.
"Oh." Riley turned as nobles were called toward the hedge maze of Applewood. "I guess we won't see them until we travel to St. Orella in a few days."
Maxwell's eyes widened. "Yeah. We won't." Once the ladies walked away, he grabbed his wife. "Nadia, Amanda is supposed to host the court next!"
Her anger disappeared as worry set in. "We have to find Olivia." She pressed a reassuring kiss to his cheek. "Call Holly and tell her to get Hudson on preparing for everyone's arrival."
_____________
Nadia burst into Olivia's room without knocking and locked the door. "You have to bring them back!" She exclaimed.
"You're interrupting me doing that very thing." Olivia motioned for her to be quiet. "Harris, it's time to retrieve our guests." She ignored Nadia mouthing her worry. "Yes. The vial is in the--" She covered her mouth and whispered it into the phone. "Use the same amount as last time. That should make it easier on you and the others and give me an opportunity to make it home before they wake up."
"There." Olivia ended the call. "They will be back tomorrow."
"I can't believe it has taken almost two months for this." Nadia flopped on Olivia's bed. "I wasn't meant for a life of subterfuge."
"Clearly." Olivia wrinkled her nose as a thought occured. "You have done better than I expected."
Nadia grinned at her. "Really? You think so?"
"Amazingly, I do." Olivia wondered how her original opinions of Nadia had turned to viewing her now as a comrade of sorts. To be impressed with her loyalty to their shared group of friends was unexpected. "Thank you...for helping with this."
Nadia surprised her with a swift unwanted hug. "Of course! I would do anything for my friends." She hurried out with a promise that they would all go with her to help explain.
_______________
That same day in St Orella...
"We have to go!" Holly interrupted the ballroom scene's dress rehearsal. "Olivia is bringing Thomas and Amanda back."
"Is this a have to go leave the country and create new identities trip or a go to Lythikos and explain why we were all a part of this venture?" Ryan asked.
Chris blanched at the possible outrage that awaited them. "I vote first option."
"Come on guys." Addison put her hands on her hips. "Once Thomas sees how we fixed everything, he will be thrilled that we--"
"Had him and the only person he loves drugged, kidnapped, and left stranded in a frozen wilderness with no explanation." Holly finished while sinking weakly down in a chair. "How are we going to be able to explain this? We should run away."
Addison turned toward Jessica and Matt. "Any chance you want to go in our place?"
"No thanks." Jessica said with a nervous laugh. "I prefer being alive."
"I think Thomas will kill the messenger in this particular case." Matt groaned when Addison appeared hurt, as if he had betrayed her. "I will come along as moral support if you want."
Holly read through the text messages she was still receiving. "Drake said Liam is going to be able to come too. He has made some type of excuse to travel early to St Orella."
Addison turned around quickly. "We get to see him again! I feel so much better knowing Liam will be there. He is perfect at keeping everyone calm and, well, pretty much everything else." She sighed at the memory of dancing with him and every other encounter.
Matt narrowed his eyes at Addison's sudden happiness over the prince going too and noticed Jessica watching him closely. He coughed and excused himself before anyone else noticed his jealousy.
"When do we leave to face our imminent doom?" Ryan asked.
"In one hour." Holly announced.

The cabin? Late at night...
"...and because I met you, I am stuck in this godforsaken cabin! My reputation as a successful director that is closely associated with my time management skills is deteriorating by the moment due to your friend leaving us out here!" Thomas gripped the mantle and lowered his head after his outburst.
Amanda remained eerily silent. The only sign she had heard any of his tirade was the undiluted rage sparking her hazel eyes.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said any of that." Thomas turned to look at her. "I don't regret meeting nor marrying you. I am--" his eyes widened at her disappearance.
The front door was open. It bounced against the wall each time an freezing burst of snow sprinkled wind blew in. He stepped outside in the dark and called his wife's name. Icicles hanging from the eaves shimmered in the faint light coming from inside.
No answer.
"Amanda!" He called out peering into the icy void that seemed impenetrable to light. "I'm sorry, please--"
Thomas gasped in pain and looked down. The sharp tip of an icicle was protruding from his chest. It was yanked out and a burst of blood came from his mouth. He turned slowly to look at the one who stabbed him in the back. He couldn't believe his eyes.
"You are nowhere near as sorry as I am." Amanda said in a calm voice. She shoved him off the porch. He landed on his back with a soft thud in the snow. His blood began to pool around his body.
She knelt down and raised the icicle to stab him once more. He weakly grasped her wrist.
"Why?" He managed to choke out.
Amanda leaned down close to his face. Snowflakes began to fall around them. Her lips curved into a bitter smile.
"Because you ruined my life with your decisions and now this incessant complaining!" She screeched before stabbing him through the heart.
Thomas jerked awake and touched his chest. His breaths came in short bursts while he reached for a lamp.
Amanda turned over. "What's wrong?" She mumbled, half asleep.
"You..." He took a deep breath. "Just a bad dream."
"I'm sorry." She pressed a kiss blindly to his cheek and snuggled down in the blankets. "Do you want to talk about it?"
"No...I...you stabbed me." He frowned at the ceiling.
"I did?" She asked, yawning.
"With an icicle." He added.
Her eyes cracked open. "An icicle? How creative of me."
He softly snorted. "You said I ruined your life when I asked why you were killing me."
She placed her hand over his heart. "You know I don't think anything close to that, quite the opposite."
He turned on his side to face her. "I did in a way by casting Lauren."
Amanda groaned and flopped onto her back. "Thomas, we have been over this. You have to stop beating yourself up over that one decision."
"I know. I plan on doing all I can to make it up to you." He vowed.
"There is nothing to make up because we are fixing it!" She said in a surprisingly loud, commanding tone. "You apologized and are trying to think of a way to rid ourselves of her for good. The one thing you are doing to me that is unforgivable is interrupting my good dream about you. Now I'm tempted to find an icicle."
He choked on his laughter. "I'm sorry." He managed to say while thinking how much he adored her. "What can I do to stop that from happening?"
She slowly smiled and tugged him close. "I suggest you distract me from searching for the perfect murder weapon by finishing my dream." Their lips met as she pulled his shirt off.
_______________
Outside the cabin in the middle of the night...
"They are bound to be asleep by now." Harris whispered.
Williams crept to the door and used the tools he had brought along to pick the lock. He snuck quietly into the cabin. All was dark and silent, save for the dying fire crackling in the fireplace. He added the contents in the vial to both the coffee pot and the tea kettle that had been prepared for the next morning's use. He retraced his steps and locked the door once he was out.
The servants walked a few miles in the snow draped forest and returned by snow mobile to their hideout.
________________
Late the next morning...
Williams and Harris, along with a team of servants, collected the sleep induced couple and all their things. They bundled them up in warm clothes and blankets before setting off back to Lythikos.
______________
Lythikos, mid afternoon...
Olivia smiled in approval at their quick and efficient work. She had them set the two in one of the guestrooms. She returned downstairs to everyone sitting around the dining room table for lunch.
"Now, we wait."
_____________
Five hours later...
Thomas gripped his head and tried to sit up. Once the room stopped tilting, he looked around at the ornate decorations and groaned. It hit him that they had somehow suffered a repeat performance from Olivia. He had no idea where they were this time.
He gently shook Amanda. After a few times of this, she opened her eyes. "Please don't shake me." She pleaded, throwing her arm over her eyes. "What happened? Why is everything spinning?"
"We were drugged again." He weakly motioned around the room. "Where are we?"
She propped herself up on her elbows and blinked a few times to try and focus. The room decided to remain in one position, allowing her to recognize her surroundings. "Lythikos." She fell back on her pillow.
"We are? Are you sure?" He was afraid to believe they could actually escape this time.
"Yes." She mumbled into her pillow.
He stood up on wobbly legs. "We're getting out of here."
"I can't. I'm too sleepy." Amanda yawned, pulling a blanket up. "Save yourself. Forget about me and make a new life."
He ignored her sarcasm and hefted her up. "Come on. We're leaving." He wrapped his arm around her waist and half dragged her out of the room.
"Which way?" He asked looking up and down the hallway.
"Thomas, just leave me. I'll escape later." She murmured, dropping her head on his shoulder.
"I'm not leaving you in the clutches of a deranged individual! What if she decides to lock you up somewhere else and I can't find you?" He pulled her more snuggly against his side. "Focus for me, Amanda. Which way?"
She groaned and pointed to the left. "That way."
They slowly made their way toward the stairs.
"Ah, your grace. I see you are awake."
Thomas whirled around with Amanda dozing on his shoulder. "Stay back." He ordered.
"But sir," Harris began. "I only wish to tell you and Lady Amanda that--"
"Not another step. We are leaving." Thomas backed up against a wall. He kept his eyes on the servant that was watching him with a great deal of confusion and edged sideways.
He made it to the stairs and shook Amanda. "Wake up." He ordered. "We have to go downstairs. I need you actively helping me right now before Olivia catches us."
"Thomas, Olivia hasn't lost her mind." Amanda let go of him and leaned against the banister. She tried to concentrate. "She must have had a reason to--"
"Drug and kidnap us twice? Twice!" He ran his hands over his face. "Short of saving us from being murdered, I can't think of one logical reason to do this to us two times in a row."
"Oh I definitely have a reason."
The two looked down at Olivia. Their other friends came out and fanned around her. A proud smirk appeared on her red lips. "We all had a reason."
_______________
A comfortable den at Lythikos...
The couple remained silent after everything was explained. Shock at the plan not only being thought of but also successfully executed kept them from being able to speak.
Thomas shook his head no when Olivia offered him coffee. He then quietly pushed back the tea cup set in front of Amanda. His dark eyes touched on each face. "Let me see if I understand this. You did all this to cause Lauren to break her contract?"
"That and change her story in front of the press." Holly added. "And wait until you see Jessica in the part! She brings an innocence to Elizabeth that Lauren could never fake."
He ignored that last part. "Why wouldn't you simply tell us your plan?"
The group shared loaded glances. "We didn't think you would go along with it." Addison admitted.
Maxwell leaned forward, his deep blue eyes flickereing back and forth between the two. "I say this with nothing but love: you two are incredibly stubborn."
Everyone nodded while muttering examples of the couple's hard headedness both individually and combined.
"I would have gone along with it." Amanda replied.
Thomas slowly nodded. "I can see the benefits. I would like to think I would have at the very least been open to it."
"I would have chosen somewhere else to hide out though." Amanda muttered.
"That's another reason you were drugged and not let in on the plan. You wouldn't have chosen a place where no one would have a chance to see you." Olivia explained.
Amanda hesistated. "I guess I wouldn't."
"And you wouldn't have waited so long past your shooting schedule." Ryan added to Thomas.
He rubbed a hand down his face. "I suppose not."
"Did you at least have a good time together?" Nadia asked, worry over them being mad at the group weighed heavy on her mind.
Thomas leaned back and met Amanda's gaze. Her eyes dropped down to his scarred bottom lip while his touched on her recently healed black eye. They shared a brief smile and nodded simultaneously.
"Once we got over the injuries," Amanda began.
"And I quit complaining about being unable to start filming." Thomas added.
She laughed and slipped her hand in his. "It ended up being nice with no one around."
"Injuries?" Drake cocked an eyebrow. "What happened?"
"Oh the usual." Amanda muttered. "Some silly person getting scared in the cellar and delivering an elbow to the face."
"Catapulting off the porch due to some idiot chopping wood at sunrise." Thomas continued. He smiled at her laughing again. She seemed to relax once more into the woman he had known before everything had occurred with Lauren. He put his arm around her when she rested her head on his shoulder.
"You're not angry with our interference in both your personal and professional lives?" Liam asked.
Amanda tilted her head up to look at Thomas. "I'm not. Are you?"
"No. I'm grateful for the meddling. I have struggled to come up with a plan to be rid of Lauren once and for all. You have saved me a great deal of stress." He bowed his head to the group. "Thank you."
"Do my ears decieve me or did Thomas Hunt say thank you?" Chris asked. "Quick Olivia! Where else can we stash him away for a few more weeks?"
"I can always take back my thanks." Thomas warned.
"Welcome back, Mr. Director." Chris quickly said. "May you never leave our prescence again."
________________
The next evening, St. Orella...
"I have never been so happy to be home." Thomas announced as he crawled into bed. "I am tempted to film everything here to avoid being stuck in hotel rooms."
Amanda set her book on the nightstand and rolled over to face him. "Thomas, this is the first time you have referred to St Orella as home."
His brow furrowed. "Surely I referred to it as such at some po--." He moaned at the heated kiss she gave him. "If you are going to kiss me like that then I will call this place home in every sentence."
She laughed and kissed him once more. "I have thought of your house in California as our home for quite a while now. Knowing you feel the same for this one makes me so happy."
He gently cupped her cheek. "After the ball, we must begin filming. I need to get some footage shot before Liam's coronation."
She nodded. "Why do you sound worried?"
"I know you have to participate this week and the next in social events. I hate leaving you on your own with Lauren now as an unwelcome part of them." His thumb softly stroked her cheek. "Actually, I don't like the idea of being apart period."
"I have dealt with worse people than Lauren. Hopefully she will be so wrapped up in Tariq that she won't bother trying anything else." Amanda grinned and snuggled closer. "As for our being apart, you have been stuck with my company for nearly five months, two of which you were cut off completely from any part of civilization. I believe you have more than earned a reprieve from me."
His arm slid around her. "I have not once wished for a reprieve as you phrase it. Since I first picked you up at the airport, I have enjoyed and craved your companionship more than anyone else's. I only wanted to leave the cabin for work. It was never to take a break from you." His hands rubbed up and down her back. "Each moment we have spent together has proven over and over that you are the only one for me."
She pressed a tender kiss to his lips. "That might be the sweetest compliment anyone has ever given me." Her laughter was muffled against his chest when he muttered that she should feel free to voice her reciprocated feelings for him.
"You know I love being with you." she responded. "Being stuck in the cabin that I have always hated showed me also that you are the only person I will both willingly and gladly be trapped with. As long as I have you, anyplace we are in will feel like home."
After a sweet kiss, he pressed his forehead to hers. "I am going to miss you." Thomas admitted. "I know it is only for a week or so..." He closed his eyes in mock frustration. "You have done quite a number on me. Making it to where even sleeping without you beside me will be impossible...you should be ashamed of ruining me for anything different."
"I'm sorry." She said in the midst of smothering her giggles. "If you want, I can sleep in a different room so that you will begin to get used to not having me around."
"If you do, I will be forced to follow you." He warned. His lips curved as she placed a kiss on his stubbled jaw.
"Good." Amanda muttered. She turned the lamp off and smiled at the warm body pressing against hers. "I intend to keep you close for as long as I can."
She yawned and closed her eyes. "We have much to do tomorrow before the rest of the court arrives. It will be our official announcement of our marriage with the hosting of this ball."
"They don't know we are married yet?" Thomas asked.
"They do, but a newly wedded noble couple hosting the court is a sign that they share the same motivations and ideals. The couple is united as one in anything presented politically and socially." She explained.
Thomas grunted his understanding while cuddling her close. "Then it is past time we showed the court that very aspect of our marriage." He closed his eyes and relaxed. "We will make certain the ball goes off without any problems."

All I Want for Christmas Is You
Tumblr media
Pairing: Dean Winchester x Josie (OFC)
Warnings: FLUFF OF DOOM.
A/N: I never write anything for Christmas....mainly because I’m a Grinch. HOWEVER, one of my favorite writers on here @ravenangel33 wrote THIS AMAZING PIECE that inspired the work below. If ya’ll haven’t checked her out, you need to. She is amazing!! Per usual, unbeta’d, all mistakes are mine, but pics are NOT!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I always dated for love, hell, I did everything for love. I stayed with my ailing parents until they were well because I loved them. I looked after my sick sister when she had a newborn because I loved her and the baby. I moved to the geographical middle of the United States for love. Not the love I ever envisioned mind you; when I pictured Prince Charming, he always had a white horse, a castle in the clouds and a charming smile.
Well, I got one thing right, the charming smile.
At six foot one, with broad shoulders, brown hair, enviable green eyes a reddish brown five o’clock shadow, wearing a canvas jacket, a plaid shirt, jeans and heavy boots; Dean Winchester wasn’t the man I pictured falling in love with. But after he sliced the head of a vampire that nearly ripped my throat out, I couldn’t help but have some kind of affection for the guy.
After the vampire thing and a speech about how monsters were real and that he and his brother hunted them, he took me out for a drink. Which turned into both of us laughing our asses off, which turned into a game of darts.
“All right sweetheart,” he said in my ear “one more shot between a win for me and a loss for you.”
“So cocky,” I said as I lined up my shot “what makes you think I’m gonna lose?”
“Because I can read people,” He crooned “you’re not confident in this shot.”
“Screw you.” I said and took the shot, which hit the bullseye. I laughed while he hung his head in defeat. I celebrated but wrapping my arms around his shoulders and kissing his cheek. The next thing I knew, we were back at my place, tangled up in the sheets.
I figured that would be the last I saw of him, but for some reason, I felt a connection with him. I knew he felt it too because he kept texting and calling at weird hours.
After a few months of this, I went to visit him at the bunker he and his brother, Sam, called home. Truth be told, it felt more like home than my place ever did. After that first visit, Dean asked me to move in.
“It feels, I don’t know, better when you’re here.” He said.
I agreed, I packed up my few personal items and moved into the bunker.
Five years later, here I was, decorating the bunker for Christmas again, making the post modern era bomb shelter light up with a little Christmas cheer.
“That time of year all ready?” Dean asked as he walked into the war room.
“Dean, Christmas is in two days.” I said from the chair I was standing on as I hung the last of the garland in the library.
“It seems to sneak up on me every year.” He said as he came up behind me.
I turned around as he opened his arms to help me get down. I climbed into his arms as he set me down on the floor, kissing my forehead.
“What do you want for Christmas this year?” He asked as he held me. It amazed me that the hands that could fix up his Chevy Impala in seemingly the blink of an eye, the same hands that cleaned a gum with military like precision, were the same ones that held me so gently and always brushed the stray hairs out of my face.
“The same thing I ask for every year,” I told him as I wrapped my arms around his middle and kissed the hollow of his throat “you.”
“You already have that,” he said “in spades.”
“Then I don’t need anything else.” I told him as I looked up at him. “We have a home, a family we’ve built, food in our bellies and clothes on our backs. What else could I want?”
He shrugged
“I dunno.” He said with a smile.
“Why? What do you want?” I asked him
“Come with me.” he said and took my hand, Walking me over to the Christmas tree. I begged and pleaded for a real tree. In the end, he caved, he couldn’t resist when I did my sad, pouty face.
I followed him over to the tree where it was set up by the stairs. In the light of the glimmering tree, we stood face to face, him holding both of my hands.
“This is what you want for Christmas?” I asked “Just you and me?”
“I want more than that,” he said “I want a life with you. A real life; with a home, a yard and as many real Christmas trees as you want.”
“But, how?” I asked, confused. For the last five years, everything I’d pictured about a normal life had been put on the back burner. The furthest back burner that there was, everything was put on hold for “the greater good”, the good of the world, the good of humanity, the good of everything. He gave me a wry smile and said
“I’m done,” his fingers carding through my hair “I’m tired of putting you in second place. I want to give you the world, I want to give you everything you’ve ever dreamed of. I don’t want to hunt any more.”
“Dean, please don’t,” I started and he cut me off by gently kissing me.
“You’re not asking me to give up anything, you’ve never expected me to give up anything, you’ve always let me be me.” He said ad he cupped my face in his hands “I’m not giving this up because you asked me, hell, Hunting is all I’ve ever known, but I want something more, and I want that something more with you.”
Tears streamed down my face and he quickly wiped them away, he took my hands in his and got down on one knee. “All I want this year is an answer.” He said as pulled a small, black box from his coat pocket as my hand clapped over my mouth that had dropped open in shock.
“Dean!” I said in shock
“Josie,” He said breathlessly as he opened the box “will you marry me?”
Tears poured out of my eyes as I clutched his hand. This wasn’t something I’d ever thought I’d see, the man I loved more than anything else in this world asking me to be his wife. I nodded furiously.
“Yes!” I exclaimed “YES!”
Dean looked relieved as he stood up, wrapped his arms around me and kissing me hard.
“That’s a yes?” He asked
“Yes!” I told him, more tears rolling down my cheeks “Of course I’ll marry you, I love you.”
“Yes?” He asked again and kissed me.
“Yes!” I exclaimed again and he kissed me again. He hugged me hard and we held each other for what felt like a long time as the people from the apocalypse world, Jack, Castiel, Sam, Mary and Bobby all filtered into the room, clapping and offering their congratulations.
“I love you.” He murmured in my ear
“I love you too Dean,” I told him “I love you so much.”
He held up my left hand and slipped the ring on my finger. I looked at it and realized it had the trinity knot on both sides of the diamond.
Tumblr media
“Oh Dean,” I breathed “it gorgeous!”
“Look on the band,” he said proudly “it’s got two hands and the setting has a heart, just like your claddagh ring.”
I looked, and true to his word, there were small hands on the same sides as the trinity knot and a heart in the middle.
Tumblr media
I cried harder and held him tightly. It was the little things that he remembered, like how important my claddagh ring was to me, that made me fall in love with him. The fact that he knew I always wanted a Christmas proposal, the fact that he was willing to put his entire past behind him for me was enough to make any Christmas wish I’d ever had come true.

Rachel Smith’s 2018 top ten
Tumblr media
I didn’t write any reviews for Dusted this year, but I have spent a lot of time on Twitter. So — because apparently my brain only works in thought-nuggets of 240 characters or so — here are, in alphabetical order, very brief reviews of some of my 2018 favorites. This isn’t so much a “best of” as it is a few snapshots of the records that served a purpose in my life this year: a release valve for the free-floating rage and despair that still permeate our political climate, a welcome distraction, a glimpse of a better future, a moment of quiet contemplation or the reassuring return of a familiar face. I hope they do something for you, too.
Author & Punisher — Beastland (Relapse)
Beastland by Author & Punisher
2018 was the right year to drop this unwieldy slab of jet-black industrial doom metal. From inside a virtual mech suit of gnashing machinery, one-man band Tristan Shone delivers a fatalistic vision that would seem almost camp if it wasn’t so well-suited to the mood today.
Daphne & Celeste — Daphne & Celeste Save the World (self-released)
youtube
In difficult times, self-care matters, and so whenever necessary I encourage you to escape into the sugar-coated world of Daphne & Celeste. Produced by Max Tundra, the king of meticulously maximalist electro-pop, Save the World is a riot of color and cozy clutter.
Dustin Wong — Fluid World Building 101 With Shaman Bambu (Hausu Mountain)
Fluid World Building 101 With Shaman Bambu by Dustin Wong
Maybe dystopian sci-fi isn’t your bag. If so, try summoning a brighter, weirder future with Tokyo-based multi-instrumentalist Dustin Wong. Busy, cheerful, and gently askew, Wong’s virtual worlds sparkle with the chirps and burbles of mutant life.
Ezra Furman — Transangelic Exodus (Bella Union)
youtube
If Bruce Springsteen’s cover of Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream” somehow gave birth to an album, I imagine it would sound a lot like Transangelic Exodus. Part trad-rock bombast, part weirdo folk-punk, Furman's meditations on faith, medicine and change leave a lasting mark.
Hot Snakes — Jericho Sirens (Sub Pop)
Jericho Sirens by Hot Snakes
Hot Snakes made some of the best rock records of the Bush, Jr. administration and although the political timing is surely a coincidence, it’s good to have them back. John Reis’ swagger and Rick Froberg’s righteous indignation are still balm to the soul.
Joan of Arc — 1984 (Joyful Noise)
1984 by Joan of Arc
For the first time, Joan of Arc frontman Tim Kinsella cedes lead vocal and lyrical duties to bandmate Melina Ausikaitis, and the experiment, I’m pleased to say, is a complete success. Ausikaitis brings refreshing new energy to the group’s playful, introspective post-rock, making 1984 is one of their best.
Julia Holter — Aviary (Domino)
Aviary by Julia Holter
Fueled by “the cacophony of the mind in a melting world,” Aviary is Holter’s attempt to carve out meditative space in a chaotic present. With complex, synth-driven arrangements, she transforms the smoggy haze of LA sprawl into an eerie, expansive dreamscape.
Nap Eyes — I’m Bad Now (Paradise of Bachelors)
youtube
Nap Eyes wed the lilting sounds of 1960s U.K. folk-rock a la the Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention with the grounded slacker-punk Zen of 1990s indie and, in so doing, have created my perfect comfort food record. Thanks, Nap Eyes!
Nicholas Krgovich — “OUCH” (Tin Angel)
"OUCH" (North American Customers) by NICHOLAS KRGOVICH
When Krgovich sings “Everything’s fine, I guess, but I wish I were dead” and a plaintive slide guitar kicks in like a punch line, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, but I think the correct answer is “both.” “OUCH” is a great break-up album, but it’s also a great album about being a person in the world.
Spirit of the Beehive — Hypnic Jerks (Tiny Engines)
Hypnic Jerks by the spirit of the beehive
Hypnic Jerks reminds me of a harder-rocking version of the Olivia Tremor Control’s Dusk at Cubist Castle—a hypnogogic patchwork of odd, elliptical little psych-pop songs that never quite work the way you expect them to but always end up somewhere good.

You Look Happier | Chapter 15

previous chapter
hey i actually have a song for this chapter: Clean by Taylor Swift
“I am… so glad to be apart of the team,” I said in a stiff voice, a fake smile plastered on my face. I was facing the camera, but not looking directly into it. “I am honored to be… to be - I can’t read the card,” I added in a soft voice.
This was my “introduction” video to go on Mark’s channel. I was sitting in front of the camera that Ethan was holding, and I had to pretend like I was forced to read cue cards. But there weren’t any, and I had to improvise.
“I-I’m honored that Mark asked me to join,” I continued in that stiff, staged voice. “And-”
“No, no, no,” spoke the devil himself. “You begged me to join.”
“Right. I asked like, twelve times and they finally let me in!” I smiled in a way that screamed for help. You could say I was acting. “And I am… excited for all of you to see what I can contribute.” Awkwardly, I gave a thumbs up, my smile looking less and less convincing.
Then, Mark came and sat next to me. “Okay, okay. Honestly, though, Bella is one of us now, and I asked her to join. We’ve got some good stuff coming in the future. Also, we’re stranded in Boston!” He went on another tangent that was completely extra before finishing the video.
It was true, though. After PAX, our flight back to LA had been cancelled due to the blizzard. I wasn’t sure what was worse, being forced to be away from my home or the impending doom of having to get back on a plane. While I was able to function somewhat properly after a crying fit, I found myself wearing thin. I know, what else is new? That feeling was probably going to stick for a while, but I guess it’s apart of recovery.
We stayed at Amy’s friend’s house for the time being. At the moment, it was uncertain how long we would be here in Boston. Three days, possibly. I tried not to let that get to me. These things happen. They happen to everyone… except Signe, who got on her flight back to Denmark just before the blizzard hit. Jack would have gone with her, but it was still the middle of the semester. He did mention that they would be okay while he was still at uni, though.
Speaking of YouTube University, I wasn’t sure what my future was with that school. I mean, I was going to be on the road in a few months, on tour. I was going to have a hand in creating the show. I was going with them. It was safe to say none of us were returning to YouTube University in the fall. It felt weird to have future plans.
Since we had nothing else to do, we made a movie trailer. Mark, being Mark, got naked and sat outside in the snow. After all this time, I still didn't know what went on in his head sometimes, but you had to admit he was dedicated. It was fun, though. I got to contribute ideas… and hold the camera for most of the shots.
I also decided to properly look through my social media later at night. We all had to sleep in the living room of the small house, and it was the first time I had a moment of silence. I was stuck between Ethan and Amy, but they were both asleep already.
The same stalker photo of Ethan and I holding hands had been reposted many times. Added to that were professional photos from his signing. I was caught in the background in several of the fan photos, along with the selfies I took with some of them. The various captions are what made me smile, though.
“I met Bella at the signing!! She was so nice and she's so cute with ethan!!”
“THEY'RE SO CUTE OH MY GOD”
“Amyplier whomst? I only know ethella!”
“My new parents”
“I hope Ethan and Bella know we love and support them a whole lot :’)”
It was like a breath of fresh air. I was tempted to post that stalker picture on Instagram with the blue and sparkly heart emojis, but it was probably too soon for that. I knew some of my followers came from Ethan's community, yet I wasn't expecting them to be nice and supportive. It was a different reaction from my last relationship, that's for damn sure.
I let out an audible sigh, glancing at Ethan, who had already fallen asleep. I was still experiencing insomnia from being so far from home, so I sat up and tried to find more ways to keep myself busy.
“Can't sleep?” asked a quiet, deep voice.
I turned, finding Mark sitting on the couch. Last time I saw him, he was lying down next to his girlfriend.
“I won't sleep until we get home,” I replied as I locked my phone and shoved it under my pillow.
He nodded. “I still can't believe you actually came here. You got on a plane.”
“Yeah, and I had to resort to drinking in order to do it,” I told him as I crawled up onto the couch and sat next to him.
“You still did it, though,” he said. “You didn't back out of it. You accomplished a lot this weekend. You should be proud.”
I shrugged. “I guess I can't disagree.”
A silence fell over us, but it was comfortable. I had been alone with Mark plenty of times in my life. I hadn’t been alone with him in a room in a very long time, despite the fact that we had been around each other a lot lately. Well, even now we weren't exactly alone, but we were the only ones awake. Any other time, I would have gone to extreme lengths to avoid seeing him at all. But given the last couple of months or so, I was finding it easier to coexist with him. Here we were, sitting in the dark, with the other five asleep soundly around us. We knew this moment was inevitable, and while it was awkward, it was kind of liberating. As always, I wasn’t the one to start the conversation.
“Are you happy with him?” he asked quietly.
Moment of truth. Everything was already out in the open. Everyone knew about my suicide attempt, everyone knew about Mark’s plan to leave me before Amy came along, and everyone knew about me and Ethan. All that was left to do was tie up the loose ends.
“Are you happy with her?” I asked in response. It was bold of me to say that, and Mark knew it too.
He cracked a smile. “I asked you first.”
“Honestly? Yes,” I answered. “Actually, I think… I think this is the happiest I’ve ever been.”
Mark smiled wider. “That’s really good to hear. I’ve wanted to hear that since… I don’t know how long. You deserve to be happy.”
I couldn’t believe I was still fond of him after all this time. My heart swelled up at his words, but I didn’t want to dwell on myself for too long. “So what about you?”
“I’m absolutely the happiest I’ve ever been,” he said. “Not just with Amy - and she does make me very happy - it’s everything I’m doing. I finally feel like I’m doing something good, I don’t even have the words for it.”
“Good.” I was smiling so wide, it was hard to hide it.
“Do you still hate Amy?” It sounded lighthearted, but I took it seriously.
“I never hated her. All the anger and resentment was directed at you, no offense. I mean, it was hard. I won’t lie, that was the most devastating breakup I’ve ever had. And, I think there’s always going to be a part of me that will see her as the girl you left me for. But, for the most part, I’m over it, and I’m glad you two are happy.”
Mark nodded, sitting back against the sofa. “Fair enough…” Then he sighed and brought his knees up to hug them. “I just… I don’t think I’ll ever forgive myself for leaving you like that, and for driving you to that point.”
I reached over and placed my hand over his. “Hey. You didn’t know I was going to do that. No one saw that coming. You did what you had to do in order to be happy. What I did, that’s all on me. And look at me, I’m still here and I’m happy, and I’m telling you to move on from that. There’s bigger things going on now. It’s okay.”
“Bella, if I had lost you…”
“But you didn’t. You can’t put the whole blame on yourself. It’s just something that happened. I had it coming, anyway. With or without you. But it's in the past now.”
He nodded. “I know. I’m glad you’re still here. I’m glad that we can still be friends.”
That brought another thought to mind. “I think… I believe that people come and go into our lives for a reason. I think we’re meant to be in each other’s lives, whether we’re lovers, exes, or friends. And if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have met Jack, and then I wouldn’t have found Ethan. I wouldn’t be here talking to you now, and realizing just how important you are to me. You've brought good things into my life.”
Mark was smiling, and he squeezed my hand.
“And I think you were meant to find Amy,” I continued. “Whether I was mentally stable or not, she was meant to come along. I know plenty of things have contributed to your happiness now, but I know she’s done way more for you than I ever could have.”
“That’s what I think about you and Ethan,” Mark told me. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile this much. He's got you getting on planes and going to signings and panels… It's incredible.”
“I made those decisions, not him,” I reminded him.
“Right, of course,” Mark said. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you… without anxiety, either.”
“Yeah… I think anxiety is always going to be apart of me. And… I think I’m trying to be okay with it. Like, a bunch of shit happened and the effects of all of that is my anxiety disorder. But I’m trying not to hate it as much, because I’m stuck with it for life.”
“So you might as well work with it,” he finished for me. “That’s good. You know I’ll be here to support you through all of that, right? Despite everything that’s happened between us, I still care about you so much.”
“I care about you too.”
“And you’re actually happy with Ethan?”
“Yes. I don’t even have the words for it.”
I looked over at the guy sleeping beside me. All of these emotions surged in my chest. Here I was, in good terms with my ex, and having a happy relationship with my new boyfriend. My anxiety was at an all time low, something I never thought I would feel. I had people I could call my family.
We heard Tyler groan in his sleep, mumbling something about keeping it down. Mark and I smiled at each other, and we knew there was nothing left to say.

High & Dry: The Best of The Week
Allah-Las. Photo:Paradigm Agency
Well, things are slowing down a bit after SXSW as there aren’t countless acts vying for your attention this week, but there’s still plenty happening. Bands like the Allah-Las and legends like Southern Culture on The Skids and Reverend Horton Heat will be here while locals The Wheel Workers, The Mighty Orq and more will be on hand for all to enjoy. Houston, here’s how to spend the next week.
On Wednesday you can get going at Walter’s when the post hardcore meets Nintendocore of California’s HORSE the Band swings by.  These guys are screamy, they mix in video game sounds, and they’re all kinds of nutty in a live setting.  This show should be interesting, as their last release was over eight years ago with Desperate Living.  The post metal electronica of New York’s Infinity Shred will be on as direct support while the grindcore of LA’s Graf Orlock will also be on hand while the noise experimental thrash intensity of Houston’s MOTHS will open up the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $12 and $14.
  La Sien. Photo: Anthony Rathbun
In the studio at Warehouse Live you can get down with the Argentine reggae of Dread Mar I. You don’t have to know who this guy is to realize that his mix of reggae and Spanish lyrics are pretty catchy, and he’s huge around the globe.  He’s here in support of his latest, 10 Anos (En Vivo) from last year.  The Spanish rock of Houston’s La Sien will be on as support and openers for the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $20 and $23.
At the Foundation Room at House of Blues, another edition of The Rush will take place, this time with Houston’s Alycia Miles and Michele Thibeaux.  Things get kicked off by DJ 4k and the 21 & up show has doors at 7 pm, and it’s FREE until 9:30 or $10 after.
Thursday you could find yourself wanting to get all of that indie rock goodness, but acoustic, and if you do then you should go to White Oak Music Hall for a solo set from Andy Hull.  Hull, best known as half of Bad Books and the lead singer for Manchester Orchestra, should have a couple of new songs as well as tracks from all of his projects to play.  Dustin Kensrue, best known for leading the band Thrice, will be on as direct support and should bring tunes from his latest Thoughts That Float On A Different Blood.  The  indie goodness of Atlanta’s Gobotron will open the SOLD OUT all ages show with doors at 7 pm.
Rockefeller’s will host the always entertaining roots Americana of Shinyribs.  This band has been grinding hard as of late and their latest album, I Got Your Medicine from this year, is fun and full of energy.  The enigmatic roots blues of Houston’s The Mighty Orq will be on as direct support and opener for the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $20 and $25.
We Were Wolves. Photo: Randy Edwards
At Continental Club you can get down with the rock n roll of Houston’s We Were Wolves.  I’ve always said that these guys are like getting punched in the face with riffs and beer, and their last EP Ruin Your Weekend just proved they aren’t slowing.  NOLA’s Bantam Foxes will bring their throwback sound mixed with guitar grandiose and swamp sludge riffs that comes out like a heavy indie rock on last year’s Gold Record on as direct support. Austin’s Otis The Destroyer will be on as opener for the 21 & up show with doors at 8 pm and a measly $7 cover.
Mucky Duck will host the phantom voiced beauty of Nashville’s Shannon LaBrie.  I’d be lying if I said that the genre defying sounds of this singer songwriter weren’t as intriguing as they were engaging, and her latest release War & Peace from last year is hard not to love.  The 21 & up show has doors at 9:30 and tickets between $20 and $22.
Friday you can help celebrate the One Year Anniversary of The Clinic in an all-day blowout before they move to a new spot.  Over 25 bands will commence on the DIY venue for a show that should go down in the history books.  Sets from Dallas’ I AM, St Louis’ Welcome Home, Houston’s Delivery Boy and many more will be on hand.  The all ages show has doors at 2 pm and tickets for $10 with all of the information available here.
  Bunny Galore. Photo: Cherry Bones
At Numbers you can catch another solid set from the ladies of Dem Damn Dames at their Cabaret Hideaway show. Featuring Bunny Galore debuting what are called “fire tassels,” this show should be pretty stellar.  Performances from May Hemmer of NOLA, Maria Bella of Baltimore, Paul Garbanzo of Virginia and more as well as the Dames themselves.  Hosted by Nick The Vegan and Skabz the Clown, the 18 & up show has doors at 7 pm and tickets between $15 and $30.
House of Blues will have the popular hip hop of Atlanta’s 21 Savage.  While this guy has only been solo for a short time, last year’s Savage Mode threw the rapper into the mainstream and he’s become quite the act to watch.  Brooklyn hardcore female rapper Young M.A. will bring her intensity on as direct support while Detroit’s Tee Grizzley will go on prior.  The hip hop of Young Nudy will open the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets for $29.50.
Walter’s will have the psych doom of Dallas’ Wo Fat.  Their latest release, last year’s Midnight Cometh, is a steady stream of heavy riffs, thick and murky bass lines, and thunderous drums mixed with psych undertones that’s worth hearing live.  The trippy psych blues of Austin’s The Well will be on hand as direct support while the prog meets doom of Houston’s Blues Funeral goes on beforehand.  Warlung will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets for $10.
Southern Culture on the Skids. Photo: The Billions Corporation
Continental Club will host their annual shows with Southern Culture on The Skids.  This three piece never disappoints in a live setting, their music is a mix of hanky and panky, and last year’s The Electric Pinecones is their best album to date.  Nakia and the Blues Grifters will be on as direct support and openers for night one of the 21 & up show with doors at 8 pm and tickets for $17.
Satellite Bar will have the punk sounds of Austin’s The Awful Lot.  These guys sound like they’re fans of Rancid and British punk, so they could be pretty tight to catch live.  The three piece punk of Yikes will provide direct support while the punk ska reggae of Bottom of The Food Chain will go one before.  The hardcore of Houston’s Feels Like Murder is also on the bill and the all ages show with doors at 8 pm will get opened by Baytown’s The Drafted with an $8 cover.
The popular indie folk duo of Shovels & Rope will be over at White Oak Music Hall in the big room downstairs.  This married couple from South Carolina have gotten bigger and bigger with time, and their latest album Little Seeds from last year has made them a household name. Matthew Logan Vasquez will be on as direct support and opener for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $18 and $22.
Merel and Tony. Photo: Ralph Elliott
On Saturday you could get started at Cactus Music for an in-store set from Merel and Tony with The Woe Woe Woes.  There for their EP release, you should know that Merel and Tony make some of the most intriguing and interesting music coming out of our city today.  Mixing electronica with orchestral influence, the best way to describe them is to hear last year’s Protest Psalms for yourself.  The all ages event gets going around 1 pm, there’s gratis beer for the adults, and it’s 100% FREE.
Later on at Rockefeller’s you can get your laugh on with the comedy of Rick Gutierrez.  Known for his appearances on BET and Comedy Central, Gutierrez has been making audiences laugh for years.  The feature act on the show will be Whiskey Brother and all around funny man Sam Demaris, while Matt Golightly will open and host the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $20 and $25.
Rec Room will host Beta Theater’s April Fools Thing.  Sets from The Mustn’ts, YouTube sensation Colby Beserra, Gino Sandoval, and much more will greet you when you attend.  The diverse mixture of improv, music, comedy and more should delight anyone who’s into the funnier side of things with doors at 7:30 pm and a $10 ticket.
The Wheel Workers. Photo: Allison McPhail
Upstairs at White Oak Music Hall you can get down for a double release show from Houston’s A Sundae Drive and Glass The Sky.  The new A Sundae Drive album Versailles is pretty amazing while offering up a more Sonic Youth type of sound to the indie rockers.  The Glass The Sky album is lush with detail and full of pop that should delight anyone who’s unfamiliar with the band’s sound.  Houston’s The Wheel Workers will go on prior while College Station’s The Ex-Optimists will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and a $7 cover.
Night two of the Southern Culture On The Skids weekend will commence at Continental Club. The honky tonk hanky pankers will play their second set in support of last year’s The Electric Pinecones, and the trio is always a trip to see live.  San Antonio’s matador surf rocker King Pelican will be on as direct support and opener for the 21 & up show with doors at 8 pm and tickets for $17.
Nashville’s Starlito and Don Trip will be in the studio at Warehouse Live.  The rapper has been reinventing himself after leaving Cash Money Records, and his latest drop with Don Trip Step Brothers THREE is impressive enough for Trip to perform on this show as well.  Houston producer and DJ Trakksounds will be on as direct support and opener for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $20 and $50, the latter being a meet and greet option.
  Reverend Horton Heat. Photo:Victory Records
Downstairs at White Oak Music Hall, the Dallas based rockabilly meets psychobilly of Reverend Horton Heat returns.  This guy is hell on a stage, his live shows are always amazing and full of energy, and his latest release Rev from 2014 is his best since Liquor In The Front. The strange yet entertaining honky tonk of Unknown Hinson will be on as direct support while The Goddamn Gallows will bring their crazed country folklore on beforehand.  Nashville folk female duo Birdcloud will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $18 and $22.
Sunday you can get going at Insomnia for the Sticky Fingers 3 Sticker Art show.  Diablo Macabre, Honeybones, Dre Forgotten and so many more will have art in sticker form on display and for sale.  The all ages event gets started around 6 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Over at the Marquee Moon Lounge, Houston’s The Cops will co-headline a set with Alabama’s Daikaiju.  Daikaiju play furious surf punk, they go into the crowd, they light things on fire, and their latest single Cock Lobster is a trip. The Cops dress like cops, sing from their point of view, and the tongue in cheek band sounds closest to Hot Snakes on their series of singles like “Street Hooker.”  The 21 & up show gets going around 7 pm with a TBA cover, and should be fun no matter what.
Robyn Hitchcock. Photo: Yep Roc Records
House of Blues will host the return of new wave legends The Psychedelic Furs.  The London group has been a big deal since the eighties, and with tracks like “Love My Way,” “The Ghost In You,” and “Pretty In Pink,” it’s no wonder.  British singer songwriter and legend in his own right Robyn Hitchcock will be on as direct support and opener.  His latest single “Mad Shelley’s Letterbox” just proves he’s not slowing down anytime soon.  The all ages show has doors at 7 pm and tickets between $26 and $32.50.
Rudyard’s will host the stoner rock of Detroit’s Bison Machine.  This four piece plays riff heavy tunes that are hard not to like, and their latest single “Cloak & Bones” is like saying you should check them out.  The squeal heavy stoner doom of Houston’s Funeral Horse will bring their energized sound on as direct support and The Satanic Overlords of Rock N Roll will bring their riff heavy punk on as openers.  The show has doors at 8 pm and a $10 cover.
Monday you should find yourself at Walter’s for the psych sounds of Allah-Las.  Mixing the surf sensibilities of California and the grit of garage psych, this LA four piece has gotten pretty popular as of late and their new album Calico Review from last year is pretty solid.  Australia’s The Babe Rainbow will be on as direct support and openers for the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $15 and $17.
Tuesday you can head to Mucky Duck for the funny and strange sounds of the Austin Lounge Lizards.  Lampooning religion and politics in their songs, this group definitely “keeps Austin weird,” and their latest release Home and Deranged from 2013 is pretty fantastic.  The 21 & up show has doors at 7:30 pm and tickets between $25 and $27.
  The Octopus Project. Photo:Greenbelt Touring
If you’d rather get a little weirder, you can head to Walter’s for the fun and electro pop sounds of Austin’s The Octopus Project.  While their album Identification Parade will always be near and dear to my heart, their upcoming album Memory Mirror sounds pretty amazing.  Couple with that a fun and crazed live show and this is where you should be on a Tuesday.  There’s no word of support or openers, but that will likely change for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $12 and $15.
That’s about all that’s happening around town this week.  No matter what you decide to do, please remember that being responsible is in everyone’s best interest; and a safe ride home is just an app away.
