It’s the majesties of the Great Tree of Ga’hoole! I took inspiration from both the book and movie (primarily their helmet + battle claw designs). I decided to challenge myself in only looking at the ref once during sketching and left it up to my own interpretation while finalizing it.
anyways, it’s great to draw ga’hoole art again! ✨🤍🦉

I know no one remembers when I posted this sketch but I just finished the Ga’hoole oc I was working on -////- She’s a spotted owl who lives at the great tree, and wasn’t tapped for any chaw. She is artistic and developed a new method of art using berry-based paints that she invented herself! I imagine her mostly as a young owl, of course, but when she gets older she probably begins a painting chaw herself!

The guardians of ga’hoole crescent the guardian born with bad luck
Species-barn owl
Mother-nyra the pure one leader
Father-kladd metal beak pure one leader
Scars- eyes slightly glazed from being moon blinked as an owlet and her scars stuck with her
Adopted parents-king and queen of the great tree
Nanny-rainbow a species of blind snakes that protect owlets in their nests
Job-warrior
Mentor-Soren and his gang
Friends-Soren and his gang, her parents, galaxie
Her insulting title was given to her by other guardians not by her parents or mentors largely due to the fact trouble fallows her like the wind but those who know her this is untrue they called her the guardian of justice because she goes out of her way to save others even if it means disobeying orders from her parents (they are king and queen after all)
Crescent belongs to me

Please check out "The City We Became" by N.K. Jemison. Or anything by N.K. Jemison really. A true talent.
There's also "Priory of the Orange Tree" by Samantha Shannon. A great fantasy/political adventure.
"Hench" by Natalie Zina Walschots if you want a good story about someone getting back at a corrupt hero society for injuring them.
"Get a Life Chloe Brown" by Talia Hibbert is a fantastic romance novel with awesome disability rep.
And while I think still technically young adult, "Loveless" by Alice Osman (author of Heartstopper) is a fantastic read.
Thank you, anon, for the many recommendations! I’ve actually had a few of these floating around in my “vague to-read list” for a while—have definitely heard many good things about N.K. Jemison and also Priory of the Orange Tree, and Loveless has been something i’ve been meaning to check out for ages. I’ll definitely read up on the ones i haven’t heard anything about so far!
in response to some of the other recs:
Tumblr media
@astrologista i think I remember hearing about that series back when I was in school—don’t know if I have the time for quite as many books as that one appears to entail but I’ll have a look?
Tumblr media
@hey-akaaaashi HMM i had not heard of this author until now and am not USUALLY too much of a romance-focused reader (hilarious, i know, considering my writing) but i must admit the summaries are pretty intriguing!! i’m going to try and find some excerpts somewhere 👀
Tumblr media
@shady-glasses I remember a time when half of my dash was literally just fanart for this series—a couple years back I read the first chapter or so of Fangirl and wasn’t able to get super into the writing, but I know Carry On is like, the fictional series from Fangirl turned into actual books? maybe I’ll try and find a preview and see if that resonates more
Tumblr media
@beakerhoneydew oh i am SO into Discworld but am doing the not-recommended strategy of reading them in publication order (i must follow timeline chronology or i will die) and therefore have about eleven more books before I get to Going Postal. i have heard SO MUCH about Moist von Lipwig though, I am really looking forward to it :)
Tumblr media
@pigeonreads ngl i am fascinated by a series being “mainly about bird fighting” as the only comparison i can make is to Guardians of Ga’Hoole which i read MANY years ago. Magnus Chase is a Rick Riordan series, right? I am suddenly reminded that I never finished reading the sequel series to PJO…but I know I’ve at least heard of Witch Hat Atelier, I will look into that!
Thank you to everyone so far for your recommendations! :) Every time I have to recall things I want to read my mind goes blank so this is actually super helpful. Much appreciated!

ummm book asks 7 and 12?
7. is there a series/book that got you into reading?
okay uhh honestly? no lol i was hyperlexic. reading got me into books, not the other way around.
but books that were formative to little me... let’s see... any of those kids series with a seemingly infinite number of books (magic tree house, goosebumps, secrets of droon, rainbow fairies, etc). plus anything with talking animals in it (charlottes web, ga’hoole, etc). any fantasy (memorable standouts: the fire within, emily windsnap). classics i read with my family (little women). a little later, things like hitchhikers guide or anything with a similarly snarky tone.
12. did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings?
agh im sure i did. if i could remember a single book from high school. i liked the odyssey obviously... various shakespeare plays were good... i think i liked, like, tess of the dubervilles and the great gatsby?

Hello I love guardians of ga’hoole anything you can share on your au????
Tumblr media
of course! the number of people who've been enjoying the hc-gog (hermitcraft-guardians of gahoole for lack of a more creative name) au surprised me because i thought the concept was very much just a niche au made for my weird brain but apparently, there is a demographic overlap between gog and hermitcraft lmao
the au has the same settings/worldbuilding as the books but i'm playing fast and loose with the lore like the great tree and hagsfiends. and since I've only solidified grian and mumbo design and backstory wise as of now, I'll give some of their lore!
grian is a collier (coal/ember collector) who trained at the great tree but has since left for reasons not disclosed to anyone (except maybe scar)
mumbo is a rouge smith who makes everything (but battle claws because he's still peace love and plants) and always seems to end up making dangerous weapons by 'accident'
they met through a business deal for grian to supply hot coals from forest fires for mumbo's forge in exchange for maintenance of his protective helmet and battle claws for colliering but eventually, they became roommates and then friends
Tumblr media
between mumbo's inventions and grian's little owl energy, they are two halves of a whole threat to owl society at large
also moon might be a little big
