#that's why it was so easy to impersonate wukong
Note
yooo i wanna know more about what Macaque is like in your SwapAU
Macaque is way more taken by jttw than LMK.
Macaque was like the "evil twin" and still is for this AU, but it's driven by jealousy.
macaque just saw this guy who literally looks like he doesn't shower and somehow he's popular? has powers? Money? Dude.
I want that.
So he started his stupid little plans.
Which are kinda gacha cliche, the whole "disguising" as the target and spreading dumb rumors by doing bad things. The problem is that it never works, so now they are stuck in being called "the twins", where one is the good one (sun wukong) and the other is the evil one (macaque)
technically his name is Liu eir (or how you spell his name in Chinese, i forgot 😭 i always call him macaque)
but everyone calls him mac, because wukong always calls him names like "microphone" or "macaroni"
Macaque dosen't go as far as hurting physically people, he does manipulate and lie though. He often gets in wukong way and picks a fight with him.
the only problem is, that he himself has no powers.
unlike wukong, who got powers from MK, macaque has no powers.
He's a simple human.
So what does he do? Machines. like red son, that creates machines and robots. y'know, killing machines. Just to get on wukong way.
Of course shadow themed
It started all as jealousy, then it turned into hatred and aggressiveness.
He got so obsessed that now he can't do anything else but try and kill sun wukong, so he can take his place.
He probably went through a bunch of stuff such as bullying, rejection by everyone and other stuff that made him crave so much popularity and fame, and he pick up the guy who had that, he wanted that and since he knew that wukong couldn't just give it to him, macaque had to take it himself.
It started as rumors and general bullying towards wukong, and it ended with obsession and attempts murder.
He needs someone who loves him.

(wanted to make a mac-centric au)
New Companion au
-everything about the ittw au, except macaque joins as a new companion and gets attached to reader cause she's kinda nice to him
-wukong is suitably spiced about it
-it's one of those "i can clearly see he's still not a good guy, why aren't you believing me, what do you mean our circumstances are basically the same" type of monologues for swk. bro doesn't understand why this guy who tried to kill them a lil while ago is all buddy-buddy with his human now
-this is kinda an excuse to have a white-furred version of mac who's less of a snarky bastard and more....nice is NOT the right word, but he wants to help. like, help reader and the monk exclusively. he doesn't really care about the other four but can play nice if he has to
-reader vouched for him after the impersonation incident, which, along with the buddha's assistance, saved him from swk's wrath. reader's argument was something along the lines of, "he's endangered, AND we just so happen to be on a quest for redemption so he'll fit right in!"
-as lonely and grateful to be alive as he was, the six-eared macaque begged to join his savior on the quest. the pilgrims could do with another powerful demon companion, couldn't they? (and just to save some grief, im gonna say they catch him before he can cannibalize any of the ffm monkeys. i ain't messing with that.)
-all the pilgrims but sun have accepted him into the group
-mac latches onto reader pretty hard. she's nice, she doesn't judge him too hard (but she still judges him, like he deserves), she helps remind him to be kind, she remembers to keep her voice down when speaking to him...he's getting gradually more and more smitten.
-of course, swk HATES this. that's his human!! this is his journey!! why does this asshole get to tag along and continue his attempts to steal both!? wukong knows six-ears is just trying to get a rise out of him, just trying to get him to attack so he can play the victim.
- macaque is only sorta trying to do that. what he wants is reader's attention. and an easy way to get it is by being hurt or upset. he clocked reader as the bleeding heart type the moment he laid ears on her, so any chance he gets; he's hurt~ monkey king's being mean to him~ he's only trying to help~

Something that annoys me in regard to discussions about Monkie Kid is how those familiar with JTTW can't separate the book from the show. You'd think it'd be easy considering that the show and the book are wildly different, but no. That difference flies right over their heads.
For example, if I wanted to have a discussion about Wukong and Macaque's relationship, and I asked why Wukong would kill Macaque, someone will say, "because Macaque killed and tortured the monkeys of FFM, and tried to kill Tripitaka, and impersonated as Wukong, etc."
Or if I wanted to talk about how Azure Lion and his sworn brothers are portrayed as morally grey, and how interesting it is that their motivations are pretty noble, someone would say, “the Lion Camel Ridge group are evil. They ate a whole bunch of people and tried to eat Tripitaka, etc.”
I can’t believe this has to be stated, but the JTTW characters and the LMK characters are different characters. Just because JTTW Macaque did those things in the book, it doesn’t automatically mean LMK Macaque did those same things in the show. Just because JTTW Lion Camel Ridge gang were a bunch of carnivorous evil monsters doesn’t mean the LMK Lion Camel Ridge gang are the same way.
I don’t see what’s so difficult to understand. Monkie Kid isn’t even your typical “popular book gets adapted into a movie or tv show” situation. LEGO Monkie Kid is a show inspired by JTTW. It’s not a one-to-one adaptation or sequel. It’s basically an AU where they will change whatever they want to suit the story they want to tell. There have been so many changes already that you would think people would see the show as its own entity by now. Yet we keep running into this problem. Half of the characters people love so much wouldn’t even be alive if the show was following the book religiously.
Keep in mind that what I’m talking about is different than not liking a certain change from the book. You’re free to prefer one version of the characters over another. I’m familiar with JTTW too. It’s an interesting story, and I understand how it was able to stand the test of time and influence many other stories. But when I’m discussing LEGO Monkie Kid, I’m talking about LEGO Monkie Kid. Not JTTW. When I’m talking about a character’s actions, I’m talking about them within the context of the show. Not what a completely different character with the same name did in the book.
Monkie Kid isn’t even the first JTTW show that’s been made. There are other shows and movies inspired by the book that told stories wildly different from the source material. If we can’t even agree on the fact that just because something happened in the book, doesn’t mean it also happened in the show, how can we have a discussion on anything?

I’ve been randomly consumed by the concept of an LMK Gravity Falls AU (thanks to YouTube comments) Here’s what I’ve got so far:
MK- Dipper
Mei- Mabel
Macaque- Stan
Wukong- Ford
Red Son- Pacifica
DBK and PIF- the Northwest parents
Spider Queen- Gideon (I’m so sorry Queen 😔 but you do both build a mech and serve the main antagonist before turning against them and also exist mostly as a minor annoyance aside from your one big moment)
LBD- Bill
Sandy, Tang, and Pigsy all kind of vaguely fulfill the concept of Soos, Wendy, and Stan but not so much in a story manner
-MK finds the staff (which had been left behind much like the Journals, except Macaque left it where it was because he couldn’t lift it) and unlocks his powers in messy and chaotic ways so he and Mei train on FFM with Macaque
-Macaque is pretending to be the Monkey King, claiming he “started going by Mac around mortals, might be easier for all of us if you called me that too”
-MK and Mei get into various demon-related shenanigans thanks to MK being Monkey King’s successor. Macaque himself rarely shows up to help with those unless they’re in actual danger because he doesn’t want it getting out that the Monkey King is missing and that the Six-Eared Macaque is impersonating him
-Macaque: “I can’t lift the staff or use my Monkey King powers anymore because I passed them on to you. Heh, it’s okay, gold never was my color anyway”
-he and Wukong had their big falling out under the mountain, and after that, they didn’t see each other for ages. LBD grabbed a hold on Wukong’s mind during a thoughtless, impulsive move of his, and while she can’t quite possess him without her full power, she can feed his negative emotions and whisper thoughts into his head. He knows this and calls out to Macaque for help with “a curse” without explaining why (as usual)
-Macaque, the simp he is, arrives to help and immediately gets met with an LBDified angry Wukong ready to kill him. Mac, confused and upset, can’t keep up with a full-powered not-holding-back Wukong, and loses his eye. He panickedly pulls him into a shadow portal that he can’t control because his powers are going haywire with his panic and fear. He’s been dreading Wukong’s return, but in recent years, he’s gotten concerned and been trying to locate him because if Wukong hasn’t returned after this long, could he be… gone?
-Wukong chooses to spend time hunting down information on how to end LBD instead of returning, and he gathers the rings of Samadhi. He returns to FFM where he senses Mei (ya know, descendant of Ao Lie and all that), only to find Macaque fighting with a strange kid filled with Wukong’s own glowing light and power. Immediately assuming the worst, he jumps into the “fight” to stop it
-Mac is terrified, and Wukong is just terribly confused because he doesn’t know why he’s THAT afraid of him, the two haven’t even seen each other since their big argument… right?
-MK and Mei jump in to protect Mac and Wukong is, again, terribly confused
-MK: “Who the heck are you?”
Wukong: “Uh… I’m the Monkey King. You have my powers, don’t you know who I am??”
MK: “What? Nah, Mac’s the Monkey King”
(Macaque is very stealthily trying to escape)
Wukong, just befuddled: “Wh— no, I’m the Monkey King. Indisputably. Always have been.”
Mei, who was a little suspicious anyway but still liked Mac: “Prove it. Pick up MK’s staff.”
Wukong: (smirking) “Easy.” (It is in fact very easy) “See, kiddo?”
MK: (jaw-dropped, turning to Mac, who suddenly looks very guilty) “You LIED TO ME??”
Mac, rubbing the back of his neck: “Well—“
MK: “Dammit, I should’ve known Mac didn’t make any sense as a nickname. If you’re not Monkey King, who even are you??”
Wukong, before Mac can say anything: “His name is Macaque. Well, the Six-Eared Macaque is his full name, but— he’s definitely not the Monkey King. He’s a trickster, but,” (baring his teeth) “I never thought he’d stoop to stealing my identity.” (He looks at Macaque, who’s frozen) “Lazy identity theft, at that. What the hell have you been doing with my name, Macaque? Dammit, it’s been YEARS. How petty can you GET?!”
Macaque, finding his voice to be angry: “PETTY?! You TOOK MY EYE!”
-Wukong is, again, as always, confused because he would remember doing that… right? And Mac doesn’t elaborate and they continue bickering (with escalation) until Mei and MK break it up and explain what Macaque has been doing with them and how he hasn’t done anything evil and has, in fact, only been good
-Wukong settles down and decides he wants claim on training his successor which sparks an argument until they agree to compromise. Wukong, as typical, doesn’t tell anyone about the Samadhi fire. They end up bickering a lot during training
-LBD finds them anyway and starts the ritual and kidnaps Mei
-after getting Mei back, they have to all work together to beat her using the Samadhi fire, and they end up having to use it on her while she’s inside of a vessel that isn’t the child she was possessing (because no children murder). Macaque makes the sacrifice in Wukong’s place
-I’m not sure how it ends, but Macaque does come back :))
-the end, it’s 3:30AM and I have many more thoughts but am so so eepy

Note
hey you
tell me about your monkeys
GLADLY
(Note: im still in the process of reading JttW so things might change if I get even more inspired by the source material, lots of creative liberties cuz these are ocs and not meant to be an accurate retelling. For those unfamiliar: essentially treat my guys how one would treat the characters from PJO, Hadestown, God of War, etc.
Also I mention death and emotional manipulation a bit. Fair warning.)
Sun Wukong and Macaque are meant to be foils in my story, and their initial relationship isn't much different than that of JttW. Wukong hit a hard spot during his journey west, and Macaque took advantage of that and tried impersonating him. And then Macaque paid the price for it.
Their upbringings in my story mirrored eachother; both were born via unnatural means, and were adopted by a troop on Earth.
Sun Wukong's troop was more lackadaisical, taking in the joys of life and going where the forces of the world took them. Made up mostly of elders, they spoiled Wukong near rotten which.... definitely got him in trouble. A lot of trouble. To his troop, the world was wondrous and many great discoveries lay just beneath their fingertips. Predation was little concern for them.
Macaque was adopted by a more strict and militant troop. Names were earned rather than given, and the young went through rigourous training to ensure their survival. To them, the world was cruel and merciless, and one must defend themselves with the same level of cruelty and lack of mercy. Macaque saw these horrors first hand, finding himself fighting off predators and seeing peers of his meet their untimely end.
So when Macaque heard of Sun Wukong somewhere along the grapevine, he felt a bitter mixture of envy and condemnation towards the other's upbringing and journey.
Macaque wishes he had it that easy, and that he was as spoiled as Wukong, deep down.
Both knew they weren't like the other monkeys in their respective troops, that there was something supernatural about them. I mean, Macaque's features were definitely more obvious. They heard of the other two celestial primates, and both suspected they were similar to them, but the far older Gibbon and the Horse Monkey kept their distance due to the youngers' attitudes and... incredibly young ages.
While Wukong's difference was embraced by his troop, Macaque was isolated by his peers and felt pressured by the elders to do more. To be better.
Mac and Wukong are young in my story. So much so they both come off as naive to the world around them, and their inexperience is exploited by the older gods affiliated with them (for better or for worse...). They're meant to be written as older teens (18-19), and very few other gods in the story share their age. They few the world far differently than those older than them and it shows, and it's exploited against their wills.
Macaque's actions were based on years of built of hatred and jealousy towards Wukong. How come he got it easy? How come he was chosen to go on this spiritual journey? How's and why's swirling in his head — until he ran away from his troop, until he started following the Monk and Wukong from a distance, using his hearing and militant upbringing to his advantage, and impulsively striking when the time was right.
We all know what happens next: Sun Wukong and the Six Eared Macaque fight, Macaque's disguise and true identity is exposed, and Wukong gives him one final blow and leaves him for dead.
Macaque doesn't die here, instead he's saved by the other celestial primates. They don't treat him too kindly, tho, belittling him and sneering down at him for his mistakes and "pitiful" emotions. No doubt being outcasted by his troop, hated by Sun Wukong and his posse, being poked and prodded at by older celestials, feeling like the gods and the Emperor themselves were sneering down spitefully at him, he ran head-on into a trap meant to exploit these feelings.
This is where Macaque meets the main antagonists of the story, a group of gods bitter towards those in power. Their anger is caused by many things: grief of a loved one lost, vengeance, self-righteousness and egotism... it doesn't matter why, they just know they're angry, there are others who are angry, and they can exploit that anger for their own gain. And that's what happens to Macaque, his negative feelings are exploited and used to trap him.
Macaque and Wukong are both being used in the beginning of the main narrative. And it'll unfortunately take a while before they realize it and break free.
