#man ive never seen an eating disorder kill someone else besides a parent infecting a child but my nana is really trying#shes like 1000% orthotexic. will not eat anything not filled with vegetables or fat. and my grandpa is 87yo with a heart condition currentl#in the hospital for covid bc thry went to Christmas church and dont believe in being vaccinated and my dad is so frustrated#bc he knows his mom is not gonna give his dad hearty foods. he needs to eat like protein shakes and meat and ice cream. anything thats not#her cooking which sucks on top of being extremely healthy. except its not healthy bc they dont eat a balanced diet#so its my nanas eating disorder killing her husband and shes so fucking frustrating. im like 99% sure she has obsessive compulsive#personally disorder bc she fits to a T and has zero insight. she may have full on 0cd bc talking to my dad he has more obvious 0cd#compulsions than i do. he used to say phrases before going to bed and would take 2 steps across the floor to prevent bad things from#happening. so like im pretty sure my nana is where i get my perfectionism and 0cd. god. i wish i could express how fucked up she is#like my dad said at least he had a stable home to grow up in but like she has zero sympathy for other people. cannot look past herself. wil#not wear a mask bc she doesnt care enough abt other ppl. my dad was like: u would not have survived in that house. which is fair bc i am#barely keeping it together coming from a stable home with two sympathetic parents who i know love me#and like its sad that they're suffering the effects of buying into the fox news bullshit and its killing them#but also. genuinely. i think theyre not very good ppl. theyre the type of people who think they're better bc they're religious. white. and#thin. and theyre not better thsn anyone. their grandchildren cant stand them. well cant stand her at least. papa is just quite so its hard#to say what hes thinking. apparently he was confused last night and saying something about eating dinner on the golf course. which sounds#nicer thsn being in the hospital lol. ugh. he seems not long for this world tbh. may he pass peacefully to b with his 1st wife who died of#brain cancer at age like 20 or something. so it goes. bleh. how many funerals are intended for me in the next 5 years? hopefully none but#that seems improbable with the unspoken drain circling that seems to b going on in this family. old age and like almost 10 years of cancer#defying the stats but for how much longer?#i dunno. its just so weird to watch these things happen and not talk about it directly to the other ppl who see it#i worry that ill come off as too callose or inappropriate bc i have that tendency when something bad is happening but thats everyone else#excuse? idk i just feel like its better to talk abt things#unrelated#ed mention#i tell u this so i can say these things to someone and also bc if i were u. i would like to hear the drama#bc im nosey and i assume other r too ;-]

so what happened with nana and shamal? are they a less intense version of gin and hisana? 🤔
The first time Shamal sets eyes on Nana Fujiwara, he is convinced he’s seen an angel. He takes in the warmth of her eyes, the silkiness of her hair, the way she smells like white tea and jasmine, and he leaps at her with welcoming arms, ready to embrace her and press himself against those soft, inviting curves.
He’s promptly enveloped in an enormous cloud of pepper spray. That basically sets the tone for the next two years of their relationship.
In general, Nana likes to think of herself as someone who gets along pretty well with people. She knows she has a bit of a temper, but she tries her best to keep it under control and to remain patient, calm, and understanding.
That all goes out the window when it comes to Trident Shamal.
There are a lot of things about Shamal that she hates. She hates the way he leers at and chases after every girl he finds attractive. She hates his stupid, perverted grin and she hates the stupid, dopey look he gets on his face every time she sees him, and she hates his stupid, fucking ridiculous rule about ‘not treating men.’
Most of all though, she hates how he gets away with it. How every single member of the administration simply laughs it off, telling her it’s “just some harmless flirting, don’t worry about it.” One professor tells her she should be flattered and she almost commits homicide right then and there.
Then to top everything off, she can’t even avoid him because as the top two members of their class, they always end up getting paired together for projects, which was...just typical.
Honestly, Nana thinks the fact that she hasn’t killed him yet is an enormous testament to her self control. She could probably put that on her resume under ‘special skills’-- has refrained from murdering classmate (was there a word for that? Classmate-cide? Peer-tricide?) despite being given literally hundreds of reasons to do so.
Not to say she hasn’t imagined doing so. Vividly. She ended up doodling so many scenarios that she had to get a second notebook.
~~
Any other day, and Shamal would have been thrilled to have Nana Fujiwara, the loveliest, prettiest, most adorable girl in his class, knocking on his door. Any other day and he would’ve been more than happy to wax poetic about her beautiful smile, her fiery personality, her large, doe-like eyes, the soft curve to those plump, inviting lips, the-- well, the list goes on.
Right now however, he hadn’t showered in three (or was it four?) days, he was drenched in his own sweat, he was running a fever of 39.5 C, his head was throbbing painfully, everything hurt, and to top everything off, the room smelled strongly of vomit.
“Shamal, I know you’re in there! Open up!” Shamal groaned miserably, covering his eyes with one arm as the pounding at the door caused his headache to go from ‘someone trying to drive an iron spike through my head’ to ‘iron spike is now on fire and accompanied by a hundred tiny hammers, please kill me now.’
“Goddammit Shamal, you were supposed to send me the draft of your half of the project three days ago! Open the door!” Nana continued to shout through the door. “I swear to god, if you don’t open up, I will kick your door down, don’t think I won’t--oh.”
Nana blinked, irritated scowl melting away at the sight of his appearance. She frowned, a touch of concern creeping into her expression.
“Are you...okay?” She asked hesitantly. It was the first time he’d heard Nana Fujiwara sound hesitant and Shamal hated it.
Summoning up whatever last reserves of strength he had left, Shamal put on his best flirtatious grin, eyes curving up into crescents.
“Aww, you don’t have to be worried about me, beautiful!” He cooed, then clenched his teeth as he felt his stomach swoop nauseatingly. “I’ll be fine, just had a lil’ too much to drink last night.” He leaned casually against the doorframe, which had the added benefit of keeping him mostly upright. “I just need to sleep it off and then--”
“Yeah no, you’re clearly not okay. Stupid question,” Nana murmured, clearly ignoring everything he’d just said. She stepped closer, placing a hand against his forehead. “Jesus, you’re burning up. Come on, I’m taking you to the hospital.”
“No!” He shouted. Nana flinched, startled, and Shamal cursed under his breath. He hadn’t meant to do that.
“No,” he repeated, calmer this time. “No hospitals. I’ll be fine.”
“Shamal--” Nana began.
“They won’t be able to do anything,” he interrupted. “I’ve been through this before, I know how it goes. I just need to wait it out.” He swallowed. “Going to a hospital won’t help. Please, Nana, I--”
He suddenly doubled over, retching violently the rest of his words disappearing under a river of vomit. Shamal had just enough time to see Nana’s eyes widen before he slipped into blissful unconsciousness.
~~
Shamal woke up to gentle hands dabbing at his face with a cool washcloth, the pleasant scent of white tea and jasmine, a familiar voice murmuring soft reassurances in his ear.
“Shhh, you’re okay. It’s just me,” the voice whispered. “Go back to sleep.”
“Nana?” Shamal asked, fighting to stay awake. “You stayed.”
There was a pause.
“Yeah,” she said finally. “Yeah. I stayed.”
~~
Honestly, Nana had no idea what possessed her to actually listen to her obviously sick, half-delirious, idiot classmate instead of doing the reasonable thing, which would’ve been to dump him at the nearest hospital.
Maybe it was the fact that he’d actually called her by her name for once, instead of some stupid pet name. Maybe it was the fact that she knew firsthand how miserable hospitals could be and could sympathize with his desire to avoid them at all cost. Or maybe it was the fact that she recognized the tone of voice he’d used when he’d told her that there was nothing the doctors could do to help him-- the kind of resigned certainty that could only come from experience, of having your hopes dashed over and over. It was a tone of voice she was well acquainted with.
(“I’m sorry Christina, there’s nothing more we can do.”)
It could have been any one of those reasons, or all three of them. She tried not to think too much about it.
It took another two days before Shamal’s fever started coming down and three before he started sounding halfway coherent again. On the fourth, she found him sitting in bed with his breakfast untouched on the nightstand next to him.
“Is something wrong?” Nana asked, frowning. “Are you feeling nauseous again?” When he shook his head, she continued, “I can make something else if you don’t like--”
“Why?” Shamal interrupted.
“Why what?” Nana asked, puzzled. “Why did I make eggs? I was looking up things that are good to eat when you’re sick and I came across a recipe for Chinese steamed eggs. I wish I knew about this before, I mean like it provides protein but it’s soft like a custard so you don’t have to chew much and--”
“No, why-- why do all this? Why go to this much trouble for me?” Shamal demanded, gesturing wildly with his hands. “The cooking, and the-- the washing, and you even cleaned up my apartment, and I don’t-- I don’t understand why--”
“Well, what was I supposed to do, just leave your unconscious body lying there on Death’s front doorstep?” Nana asked uncomprehendingly.
“I threw up on you!” Shamal snapped, sounding mortified.
“Yeah, you aren’t the first person to throw up on me, and you won’t be the last,” she responded dryly. “I’d be in the wrong line of work if I let a little vomit get to me.”
When he still refused to meet her eyes, she sighed.
“Look Shamal, I may not like you-- actually, I can’t stand you-- but that doesn’t mean I want you to suffer like this. You don’t deserve that, no one deserves that.”
No one deserved to feel like their body was failing them. Nana swallowed, forcing her voice to remain steady.
“I was in a position to help, and so I did,” she said quietly. “It’s as simple as that.”
“...as simple as that,” Shamal echoed. “You truly mean that, don’t you? No favors, no debts, just--” He laughed, a little disbelievingly. “You’d go above and beyond the call of duty even for those you hate, just because it was the right thing to do.” He shook his head, a faint smile on his lips. “You really are something else, Nana Fujiwara.”
Nana glanced away, suddenly unable to meet his eyes. She wasn’t sure if he was just acting weird due to the lingering fever, or-- or dizziness from missing breakfast, but something about the way he was looking at her in that moment--
“I should take your temperature again, it’s been over eight hours since I last checked it,” she said abruptly. “I think I left the thermometer in the other room, wait here.” She marched off and tried to ignore how it felt like running away. “Eat your eggs.”

Hey. It’s the 7-year anniversary of my Nana’s death as we lost her to bowel cancer. I know this might be a sad request, but, is there any chance you can write scenarios of how each Turtle would react to when their s/o reveals to them that they have cancer and how would they deal with them.
I’m very sorry for your loss, and I’m here if you need to talk. I did a lot of research to make sure I knew enough about the subject, and I hope this can make you feel better!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leonardo:
- When you tell him he goes quiet, as he begins to process the news
- He asks a lot of questions about it, basically wanting to know everything your doctor told you
- Leo hates when things are out of his control so he might seem to be on edge for a bit and would probably have to have a talk it out with Splinter to really begin to accept it
- He would obviously support you no matter what you decide to do, but he, like the rest of his brothers, would strongly urge you towards treatment
- He would encourage you to eat foods that were higher in protein to get your strength up before your treatments start like fish or chicken
- Leo would also suggest that you meditate with him, he says it would help you manage your stress and to help with a few of the side effects from your chemo and look into traditional Japanese remedies to help you with your nausea, as well as the other side effects you could experience
- To your surprise, he would actually pull back on his strict training schedule a bit so he could make sure that if you needed anything he was there to help you; or if you just wanted him around
- He would watch whatever movies you wanted to watch, and would act as a pillow for you when you rested
- There were a few times when you would try to do things for yourself, which would genuinely frustrate him, he would always tell you to take it easy (which would drive you crazy at times)
-Leo would make you a playlist with your favorite songs and a few that he thought you might like for you to listen to during your treatment to help you relax
- Every time you come back from the hospital he reminds you how strong you are and how great you’re doing
- He would also feel better if you were to stay at the lair more than you do your apartment. Just in case you would ever need anything, and he feels like your safer down there with him and his family
- Leo would also not want to tell you a lot about what happens during their patrols or missions, he wouldn’t want to add any worry or stress
- He would never let you feel like a burden
- Reminds you that the two of you are a team, no matter what
Tumblr media
Raphael:
- When he first finds out, he doesn’t handle it very well
- He makes himself scarce, he blames it on training, lifting, or other ninja duties as to why he can’t see you at the moment
- With tears in your eyes, you storm into his room to confront him about it that he himself breaks down into tears
- He tells you how he was worried that he would only make things worse and that he wasn’t sure what to do
- The two of you talk about it though, and in the days afterwards he makes a complete 180
- He is there for whatever you need, no matter what time
- If you ever get angry, he’ll let you yell at him about it, he understands that you’re upset, he can take it and he’ll wait it out until you calm down again
-If you’re scared or sad and just want to be held, he scoops you you up in those huge arms of his and keeps you close until you calm down
- When you start treatment, Raph is completely supportive, he hates that he can’t physically be there for you but he always makes up for it afterwards
- He will convince Donnie to let him pick you up in Vern’s old news van after your treatments
- If you feel too tired or in pain, he will carry you around, he knows how much of a toll chemo can take on your body
- He’s more gentle with you than normal, knowing that you bruise much easier since your treatments start
- I have a headcannon that Raph is one of the best cooks in the family, so he will look into what kinds of foods would be gentle on your stomach so you can eat without feeling nauseous afterwards
- He would never let anyone say anything about your hair loss, and says if anyone ever does to tell him; because you are his better half and he would never want someone to hurt your feelings
- In the end, he is your rock and would be there for you always
Tumblr media
Donnatello:
- Upon telling him he would take a bit to process
- He’s the doctor of his family, and he would feel helpless because he really can’t help you as much as he wishes he could
- But he knows how scary this is for you and would never ask you to comfort him during this time, so he attempts to distract himself from thinking about all the possibilities
- He would do research nonstop on the type of cancer you have and would present it to you, you two would have a long conversation about what kind of treatments you could choose
- He would also look into non-addictive pain relievers for you so on the days when you like crap he can help
- Like Raph, Donnie would insist on picking you up after you receive you chemo, he would also ask that if you need to be driven somewhere that you let April take you
- He would look through blogs from other cancer survivors to see what works best for them to give an idea of would he could try for you
- To occupy and distract you during your treatments, Donnie would make a folder on your computer of all your favorite movies to take with you
- When you come back afterwards, he’ll take a break from his work and gently lay you in his bed, if you wanted to be held he would cradle you; if you didn’t really want to be touched he would sit down at the foot of the bed with his hand gently rubbing your feet
- Donnie would never want to ignore your feelings of fear or sadness, but he would try to lift you up and make sure you feel more hopeful by the end of the conversation
- Due to his own apprehension, every side effect you had from your chemo, he would look into to make sure that a side effect was all that it was
Tumblr media
Michelangelo:
- At first when you tell him, like the rest of his brothers, he’s in disbelief
- Wants to believe you’re just trying to prank him, would awkwardly laugh at first saying things like “good one babe, but you shouldn’t joke about that.”
- When you tell him you aren’t joking, he feels his heart drop to his stomach
- Asks a lot of questions, just trying to get a handle on what’s going on
- He gives you lots of reassurance, telling you how strong you are, and how proud of you he is
- While you are receiving your treatments, he is on the phone with you the entire time, telling you how great you are and how it’ll be over soon and will promise to do whatever you like when you get home
- Absolutely refuses to show you that he’s worried, he wants to make you feel happy or optimistic
- He doesn’t bottle those feelings up though, he will sit and talk with Splinter about it almost everyday. Sometimes maybe Leo, but most of the time Splinter
- He is there for you no matter what; If you’re in pain from treatment he makes you a nest of pillows in his room for the two of you to cuddle on
- If you feel nauseous, he will sit next to you and gently rub your back until it passes
- If you feel self conscious about loosing your hair, he will hype you up all the way. Telling you how much he likes your look
- Making jokes like “Look babe! We match now!” just in an attempt to get a laugh out of you
- Because he is so in love with you and will never stop trying to make you smile, no matter what the circumstances are

beautiful things
Tumblr media
pairing: marcus pike x reader
word count: 1.1k
warnings: triggering topics: disordered eating, unhealthy relationships with food, talks about negative body image. it ends with fluff and encouragement and reminders about how illogical all of that is, but please don’t read if it’s going to send you spiraling!
a/n: beautiful, poetic prose this is not. but i had a really rough week with the issue described here and i just needed a self-indulgent lil drabble that i could write in the spare time that i had today. it’s been extremely therapeutic to write and i hope it can be for you as well if you struggle.
disclaimers: this is what disordered eating looks like for me personally a lot of days. it’s going to look different for everyone and in many cases it’s so much worse than this. if your thought processes and relationship with food is negatively impacting your quality of life: please go see a therapist or counselor who can help you through it. and even if it’s mild like this here: please consider professional help so you can live to your absolute best!

You entered the kitchen to the sight of Marcus standing over the stove, working on his family’s famous chili. You wrapped your arms around his middle and mumbled into his shoulder.
“Gotta love a man who can cook.” He laughed , running a hand over yours as he stirred.
“It’s definitely not me. All my Nana’s doing.”
“Well, you can follow instructions at least, which is arguably just as sexy in a man.” He laughed again and you loved feeling the rumble of it against his back.
“Now that I’ll take.” He shut off the burner, reaching over to grab the bowls he’d already set out. “How much do you want?”
“None for me right now, thanks,” you unwrapped yourself from him, moving away to lean your elbows on the island and averted your eyes to where your hands were clasped.
Your mouth watered once the smell of the simmering spices hit your nose, but you resolutely decided to not let yourself be tempted. Marcus’s brow furrowed as he spooned chili into a bowl.
“Are you sure, babe? I made more than enough.”
“I know. I just ate dinner so I’m not really hungry.” A half-truth. “I’ll eat some tomorrow.” Your smile was thin.
“Baby, your dinner was a protein bar two and a half hours ago.”
“Mhm,” you nodded, confirming that that was true, but not offering any more information that would require you lying to him. In truth, you were dying for some of that chili. It was one of your favorites and Marcus knew that. But you’d decided that you’d already eaten too badly yesterday, so you had to make up for it today and that tempting bowl did not fit into that plan. Marcus caught on, as you’d dreaded, and walked over to put a hand on either side of your face, studying it.
“Are you feeling ok?”
“Yes. Jesus, Marcus would you stop hounding me?” you snapped, yanking away so he couldn’t see the angry tears forming in your eyes. You hated feeling like this. It wasn’t often made so obvious, it wasn’t usually noticed by others. You were good at skirting around the topic, making your habits look normal, not letting anyone on to how you viewed food and yourself.
“Hey-- what the hell is going on here?” You tried to walk away, embarrassment piling onto how you were already feeling. What an asshole move to be so harsh with Marcus when he was just trying to help. He was too good. Really, you saw this coming. You knew that as soon as he caught wind of your insecurity he’d, in his typical fashion, be entirely too caring and supportive and helpful, and yet you just couldn’t tell him about it. You knew it wasn’t a healthy mindset, but you’d rather stay in it than pull him in and worry him, so you tried to run. He grabbed your hand before you made it two steps, admonishing softly, encouragingly. “No. Stay here. Talk to me. This doesn’t seem like it’s just about chili anymore.”
“I need to lose weight. I need to look better. Less…” Words escaped you, so you left it to a simple gesturing of your arms. Marcus looked utterly confused, dumbfounded, horrified. He’s at a complete loss for words.
“Wha- Where did this come from?” You shrugged.
“It’s not the first time. The thoughts are… Sort of always there in my head. I just don’t voice them. They’re not pretty.”
“I see.” Marcus gnawed at his lip for a moment, considering. Several different thoughts crossed his mind in rapid succession. Firstly, it pained him that he never noticed, but now it was all making sense: your little side comments about appearance that he quickly, easily shut down, but didn’t bat an eyelash at? He should’ve confronted them more fully, not letting them slide. Secondly, it terrified him to think what you thought about yourself, the things you seemed to think weren’t worth sharing. He made the immediate mental note to be more consistent in telling you how beautiful he thought you were without your prompting. He could’ve done so much better. Time to make up for it now.
“Come here,” his hand that still held yours pulled you to face him. “Stand right here and I want you to say out loud what you think about yourself.” You looked at him skeptically. “There’s a point to this, I promise.”
“Fine. I’m--”
“Say ‘you’re’.”
“What?”
“Say it in second-person.”
“You’re-- You’re-- I can’t, Marcus. It feels like I’m saying it to you.” You crossed your arms over your chest. You already knew where this was going.
“Well,” he patted his stomach, “I’ve definitely put on weight lately. Do I not deserve the same treatment you give yourself?”
“Of course not! I love the way you look.”
“I love you, but you don’t see how that’s totally hypocritical?”
“It’s different and you know it.”
“Is it? Would you ever say anything you tell yourself to anyone else?”
“No, but--” you sighed.
“But what? Because it seems like you think all body types are beautiful as long as it’s about someone that’s not you.” You caught your lip between your teeth. “You’re holding yourself to a standard you’d never hold anyone else to. It’s unfair.”
You groaned, falling into his waiting arms and burying yourself in him. He wrapped around you completely, as if by doing so he might squeeze every bad thought out of your head. He wished he could. You didn’t deserve what you did to yourself.
“This isn’t supposed to be logical. Stop being logical,” you murmured, muffled by his shirt. He laughed.
“Well, as long as you know you aren’t making sense. But… Seriously.” He pulled back slightly and used a finger to lift your chin back up so your eyes met his once again. “That pretty head of yours thinks a lot of beautiful things, but it’s also more than capable of lying to you. Don’t let it. And please let me help. Or someone, at least: a counselor, a friend. Just don’t let the only voice be your own.”
“Alright. I still don’t think I can manage eating right now. But I do feel a little better, thank you.”
“That’s fine,” he emphasized, hands coming to either side of your face, thumb rubbing soothing circles “One conversation is not going to change years of damaged thinking. But I’m here to get you through this, ok?”
“Ok.” He pressed his lips to yours to seal the agreement and when he pulled away he added:
“Besides… My whole life revolves around art. You think I can’t recognize beautiful things when I see them?”

Ever been called babe/baby? Yes.
Have you ever witnessed someone else engaging in a sexual act (not necessarily sex)? No.
Where did you get drunk last? It was at my hotel birthday party 7 years ago. I had an awful experience with alcohol and I decided I was over it. I haven’t drank since.

If someone went through your pictures, would they find a dirty one? Nope.
Do you want to see anyone right now? No.
Have you ever fell asleep in someone’s arms? When I was a kid.
How long does it take for you to fall asleep at night? It really varies.
How many pillows are on your bed Twelve lmaooo. I only use two, though. I just love throw pillows.
When’s the last time you cried? A couple of days ago. It was one of those days where I was just on the verge of tears all day and literally anything could open up the floodgates.
Is it cute when a guy buys you flowers? Sure.
Will things change in the next month? I don’t see anything major happening.
How did you do on the last test you took? Pretty sure I did well.
Have you ever wanted to tell someone something but didn’t? Plenty of times. Are you afraid to grow up? I mean, I’m 31, and sometimes I still don’t feel like I’m grown up. <<< Saaaaame. But also yes.

Last thing someone gave you? My brother bought me food last night.
Who woke you up this morning? I haven’t gone to sleep, yet.
Who is your favorite family member on your mom’s side? My mom.

What was the last thing you ate? Ramen.
Which of your friends is the most likely to get pregnant right now? I don’t have any friends.
Do you remember the meanest thing the last person you kissed ever said to you? He didn’t ever say anything mean. He said things that were hurtful and upsetting, but not things directed at me in a mean way if that makes sense.

Have you ever been called prince/ princess? Yes.
Waiting for something? I’m looking forward to giving my family their Christmas presents.
Have you kissed anyone when you’re single? Yes.
What are you doing this weekend? Same stuff I do everyday.
Could you go the rest of your life without smoking a cigarette? It’s been 31 years, so I certainly could. <<< Same again. I have zero interest.
Have you ever kissed someone who was in a relationship? No. Where is your biological father right now? At work. Where is the biggest scar on your body? The vertical one down my entire back. How late did you stay up last night? I’m still up at 8:33AM... :X

I didn’t have to as an adult, but I still did (I say did cause I never go anywhere anymore unless it’s with my family, but if I did I would). That’s just how my family and I are, we let each other know what’s going on. It’s not asking permission, it’s just letting each other know. Like my brother, who’s 21, will be like, “Hey, I’m hanging out with so and so tonight. We’ll probably just grab something to eat” or something like that. Think back eight months ago, were you single? Yes. I’ve been single for several years. What do you carry with you at all times? I always take my phone and wallet. Do you have a dirty clothes hamper in your room? Yes. Do you enjoy big holiday dinners? Yes. We haven’t had one in years, though. Is your vision good? With my glasses, yes. ha. What food are you craving right now? I’m already thinking about Wingstop for dinner lol. How old were you when you stopped believing in Santa? Like 7 or 8. How many times have you kissed the last person you kissed? Numerous times. Do you have a friend you can tell stuff to and you’re sure they won’t tell? I have my family I can do that with. Would you ever get someone’s name tattooed on you? If I did it would be a loved one who passed. I don’t plan on ever getting any tattoos, though. I’m too big of a scardycat.   Does your family have family picnics? No. If your doctor said you were pregnant, what would you say? I’d say you have my chart mixed with someone else cause that’s impossible for a couple of reasons.

5 Secrets to Eating an Energizing Breakfast When You're Working Full-Time
New blog post! There are two kinds of eaters: the people who skip breakfast and the ones who wish they could eat it for every meal. I've always been part of the latter group; even when I was taking 17 units of classes in college, I never went without some oatless oatmeal or a big smoothie bowl! However, now that I've started my first "real" job - as Senior Editor to Entity Magazine - I'm starting to understand why 31 million Americans skip breakfast everyday. In 2011, a survey by NPD Group  found that 10 percent of Americans skip breakfast, reportedly because they aren't hungry, don't feel like eating or don't have time. And, considering how hard I find it to "slow down" and make time for breakfast when I'm working at home, I can only imagine the challenges the average commuter faces.
What's a workin' gal to do? Get some help from these five secrets to eating an energizing breakfast - whether you're working full time, a busy college student or anything in between! 1. Prep ahead of time as much as possible. There's no better party than a preppin' party...okay, that's a lie, but prepping your breakfast ahead of time can make your mornings ten times easier. You don't have to make your entire breakfast either. If you're going to eat a yogurt parfait once you get to work, cut up your fruit, put your granola in a bag and put your yogurt and other cold toppings close together in the fridge. This way, all you have to do is grab your bags in the morning and throw everything together in the office! If you do want to have a breakfast buffet waiting right when you wake up, some of my favorite prep-ahead meals include:
Overnight Quinoa Flakes: if you want a breakfast similar to oatmeal but packed with even more protein, this is what dreams (and happy tummies) are made of...
Cozy Cacao Oatless Zoats: zucchini has never tasted so sweet - and breakfast has never been more easy to eat on the go!
Eat Yo' Greens Mini Baked Pancakes: these gluten free and vegan pancakes stay good for over a week in the fridge, which makes them perfect to make on the weekend and eat all week!
Zucchini Bread Nana Ice Cream: this is my favorite breakfast to make ahead. Simply blend your smoothie as usual and store it in a glass container/jar in the freezer. When you want to eat it, pop it in the microwave on defrost until melted through and enjoy!
Berry Coconut Granola or Green Smoothie Granola: really, any of my granola recipes make delicious breakfasts with a fruit and little (plant based) milk or yogurt. Both recipes boast some hidden veggies, making them a healthier way to start your day.
Superfood Coconut Banana Cookies: cookies in the morning? Luckily, these are just healthy enough to count as a well-rounded breakfast!
Bliss Balls: these taste like candy, are packed with superfoods like coconut flour, dates and nuts, and are easily personalized. What more could you want?
Some of my personal faves!
Some nights, the last thing you want to do is spend time in the kitchen, prepping for the next day. Just try to remember how happy you (and your taste buds) will be the following morning! 2. Use naturally energizing ingredients. While I wouldn't classify myself as a night owl, calling me a "morning person" would be a bit of a stretch. So, even though I don't drink coffee, I need all the energy boosts I can get when I wake up. Luckily for me - and others who want to lower their coffee intake or don't drink it at all - there are plenty of other naturally energizing foods, including: fresh fruit (yay natural sugars!), water (with studies showing that dehydration can often make people feel fatigued), nuts (which are packed with magnesium and help convert sugar to energy) and cardamom (which promotes blood flow by expanding small blood vessels). If you want a coffee-like drink with none of the energy crash, you may want to add Macaccino to your grocery list. I recently got the chance to taste this superfood drink and fell in love with the chocolatey flavor. The Original Roasted Maca Blend that I tried boasts a mix of organic roasted maca, cocoa powder, mesquite powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg. As I've written before, maca has been shown to improve immune function, memory, focus and stress management - while also helping to balance hormones. As a result, this drink is about as healthy an energizing drink as you can get.
Hot cacao in smoothie form! ;)
Since I'm a total smoothie addict, I added a scoop of Macaccino to my morning nana ice cream. While I won't claim it made my work productivity double, I definitely enjoyed the rich, chocolatey flavor. Any energy boosts were just a bonus! You can also brew Macaccino like hot chocolate or coffee by just adding hot water. No matter how much of an early bird you are, we all need a little help from time to time. Whether it's fresh fruit, trail mix or Macaccino, just don't forget to include ingredients that will set your energy levels up (no pun intended) for success! 3. Know what processed foods are your friends - and don't feel guilty for using them! Maybe if I had my own personal chef, I'd always eat from scratch for breakfast - but that isn't my reality, and it isn't most of Americans'. In fact, a recent study found that more than half of Americans' calories come from "ultra-processed" foods. As I've mentioned before, processed foods is an umbrella term that can include a variety of foods - and some are way healthier for you than others. The key is learning which of these foods to avoid - like "ultra-processed" foods that contain ingredients like extra colors, sweeteners, emulsifiers and flavors - and which can be part of a healthy diet.
The perfect morning start...or night snack!
So what processed foods aren't as bad as their title might imply? Think of minimally processed products like whole grain breakfast cereals, pre-cut fruit or veggies, no sugar added yogurt, packaged trail mix or even pre-made granola. Lately, one of my favorite (and, full disclosure, sponsored) breakfast additions is Frontier Bites. These snacks boast eight natural ingredients - like nuts, seeds, brown rice syrup, organic honey, puffed rice and millet, and fruit - and no refined sugar. I'm particularly addicted to topping my So Delicious yogurt - or a green smoothie bowl - with some Macadamia Pineapple Coconut bites for crunch. Add some fresh fruit, nut butter and chia seeds for a well-rounded - not to mention super delicious - breakfast. The truth is, not everyone has the time, money or energy to make all of their own food, and we shouldn't feel ashamed to reaching to processed foods for a little help...especially when those products are as nutritious as they are delicious. 4. Stick to what you know works. Of course, maybe what kinda "works" for you is skipping breakfast altogether. However, when you're trying to introduce a new healthy habit into your life, don't go farther out of your comfort zone than absolutely necessary. As a blogger, I love trying new products. As a foodie, I love trying new recipes! Yet, I rarely miss having a smoothie bowl for breakfast (unless I'm traveling, in which case I just eat all of the smoothie toppings and lots of fruit!). Why? I know that smoothies won't upset my stomach and that they'll give me the fuel I need for a busy day.
My brunch at the airport!
My mom is also gluten free, but she has a very different daily menu. Her days start off better with a simple bowl of buckwheat flakes cooked in the microwave with water. Add one sliced banana, a little cinnamon and a drizzle of honey, and she's one happy eater - and so is her belly. The moral of these stories is basically to show that everybody is different and, well, every body is different too. No one wants to go into work feeling nauseous, overstuffed or still hungry, so keep experimenting until you find the breakfast that is "just right," in the words of Goldilocks. And when you find your edible soul mate? Make it a committed relationship and stick to a breakfast you know works for you! 5. Treat yo' self...while treating your body right! Now, "treating yourself" doesn't necessarily mean kicking off every morning with a bowl of ice cream. Maybe that's A-OK on your birthday - but you also need to regularly focus on treating your body to the fuel and nutrients it needs. When I'm working, taking a break for brunch can seem like an annoying interruption. However, I know that if I don't feed myself right, I won't be able to write "right" either!
Taking a trip on the sweeter side!
Your ultimate goal should be finding a breakfast that tastes like dessert but is healthy enough to be a main meal. My recent secret weapon is Heavenly Organics's raw honey. Compared to processed honey, their products offer a variety of health benefits - ranging from antioxidants to Vitamin C to properties that help stabilize blood pressure, aid digestion, fight cancer, lower bad cholesterol and decrease inflammation. And, of course, their honey tastes pretty scrumptious on everything from pancakes to oatless oatmeal. Some days, brownies are acceptable breakfast material. Other days, your body needs a green smoothie. Treating yourself - and your body right - means both breakfasts are allowed to land on your weekly menu, because feeding our cravings can be just as important as feeding our bodies. The definition of "treat" is up to you...and you and define it differently every day! Before I turned into a (pretty legit) "working woman," I never understood how so many people could regularly skip breakfast. Now, I have a better grasp on how difficult eating an energizing breakfast can be - and way more respect to the expert foodies who've already managed this feat for years!
Cheers to delicious work day mornings!
With the right prep time, healthy ingredients and mindset, though, eating breakfast while working a full time job doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, it can just be incredibly delicious! *I received these products free of charge in return for a written review. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.* What is your favorite breakfast to eat before or at work? Have you ever tried Macaccino, Frontier Bites or Heavenly Organic honey before? Tell me your thoughts below! via Blogger http://ift.tt/2joik4i
