Welcome to another round of W2 Tells You What You Should See, where W2 (me) tries to sell you (you) on something you should be watching. Today's choice: 民国奇探/My Roommate is a Detective.
Tumblr media
My Roommate is a Detective is a 2020 drama about the Jazz Age shenanigans of a terrible OT3: a useless noodle boy, a spoiled journalist girl, and a handsome thug-turned-cop, who together solve Agatha Christie mysteries in 1920s Shanghai.
Tumblr media
I mean, seriously, have you ever wondered what Hercule Poirot would be like if he were a 6'2" Chinese rubber man? If he had a long-suffering sugar daddy from the wrong side of the tracks and a spunky sugar mommy who owned their shared apartment? The answer is, it would be a laugh-out-loud-funny series about a ridiculous and charming assortment of weirdos solving only slightly believable murder mysteries in charming period clothing.
This is another one of those shows where I'm kind of shocked at how not well-known it is, except I'm not, because I can see exactly the problems that keep fandom from descending on it like horny little vultures. Nonetheless, I think it's a good time that more people would enjoy if they gave it the chance. Here's five reasons why you should:
1. Equal parts smart as heck and dumb as butts
On the one hand, especially given its tone and tenor, this show has many surprisingly clever turns and thoughtful moments, carried along by some talented actors. On the other hand, [.gif of a guinea pig in a rollerskate being pushed merrily down a hallway]
Tumblr media
This show is not a complicated intellectual exercise. It's an action comedy about a goofy sleuth, a rich-girl reporter, and the cop who should be the straight man in this trio, except he's as much of a goober as the other two are. If the promotional tableaus are giving you real "cover of a Clue box" vibes, you've understood the kind of pastiche it's pulling off.
Tumblr media
The mysteries are preposterous. They're all the kind of thing that exemplify the Doyle line about how, when you've eliminated the impossible, whatever's left has got to be the answer, no matter how ding-dang improbable it may be. You know the type: tons of overly elaborate setups, unbelievably perfect timing, coincidental long-lost relatives, people hallucinating right and left. They're also very short -- most full cases take only 2-3 episodes to introduce, investigate, and resolve, even when interspersed with the larger goings-on in these weirdos' lives. The DramaWiki page for the show lists 23 separate arcs over 36 episodes, so you do the math.
Tumblr media
And yet, it's way more thoughtful and clever than its doofy little setup would indicate. Its attention to detail surprised me on more than one occasion. Add to that a bunch of solid performances from an ensemble of real characters, and what you get is definitely more substantive than a junk-food waste of time. You can't turn your brain off while watching it, but you sure can turn it down, and that's great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It also doesn't hurt that everyone is super attractive and wearing great outfits. The whole show's worth it for the wardrobes.
2. THE GIRL
Fuck the haters, fuck everyone, I am going to climb right up on my little soapbox and tell you all why Bai Youning is awesome.
Tumblr media
She is insane. She's a troll. She's a clever little monster. Every other character's response to her is, oh my god, you are literally the worst. And she is! She has been spoiled beyond belief by her incredibly rich Crime Dad, and she has learned to leverage her uwu just a widdle girl status to get her whatever the hell she wants. She simply cannot hear it when someone says the word "no." She will look her future sister-in-law in the eye and point a loaded gun at her own head without blinking. Every ball she has is made of brass.
She's hardly perfect. During the course of the show, there are some times where her entitlement runs face-first into the brick wall of reality. She's not nearly as good at her chosen career path as she's been told (mostly by the people who get paid to tell her she's good). She's rarely prepared to deal with the consequences of her actions, especially when she can't just throw money at the problem.
So she learns, and grows, and changes. She's always going to be a stubborn bitch, but she can become a stubborn bitch with a more accurate conception of her relationship to the world around her.
Tumblr media
She's actually a really good romantic foil for Lu Yao, who is equally stubborn and spoiled and obnoxious as hell. It is a pure brat4brat relationship, where each one thrives on comically enraging the other. What this means, though, is that when they actually start showing one another some vulnerability, it's really sweet.
Now: I'm pretty sure that you could not have made a female character in her position that everyone did not hate, no matter how cool you made her, because that is the fate of all girls who theoretically keep the two boys from kissing. (More on that next point.) If she were less outgoing and friendly, she would've been hated for being too cold. If she were less headstrong, she would've been hated for being a pushover. If she weren't as into the boy, she would've been hated for being frigid. I know the "god forbid a woman do anything" meme is a joke, but ... man, god forbid this girl do anything. She gets a level of hate entirely disproportionate to what she's actually like. As I said with Eom Dada, it's not always sexism, but sometimes, yeah, it's sexism.
(Real talk: Her character is also fighting both how she's definitely not written as well as the boys are and how the plot sometimes needs her to be artificially stupid and jealous for Straightness Drama Reasons, so that's a legit problem on a structural level. Also, she's dubbed by someone else and the boys aren't, which gives her voice an annoying not-quite-there quality that's hard to ignore. The deck is stacked against her real hard even before she steps onscreen.)
Tumblr media
So here's my advice: Go into this show wanting to like her. Embrace her terribleness as a positive, intentional quality. Don't be mad at her for straightening up an endgame that was never going to be gay, even without her. Welcome her contributions to the chaos. Realize that she is exactly as entertainingly irritating as her boys are.
Tumblr media
Truly, this is a story of three terrible people in love. They're all just awful, and you wouldn't want to be in a room with any of them for longer than you had to. Left to right up there, Bai Youning is spoiled and self-absorbed, Lu Yao is arrogant and lazy, and Qiao Chusheng is suuuuuch a fucking cop. If you're into the kind of dynamic that can only be described OT3: You All Deserve One Another, then this one's perfect for you.
3. Do you really miss '00s queerbaiting?
Like, really? Are you just super-nostalgic for being able to see the showrunners go, ha ha, girls, we know you're watching and we know you want these cute boys to kiss, which they never will -- but what if we pretended for just this one scene??? Do you just carnally ache for that with every fiber of your being?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yep.
Now, why am I calling the occasional really gay moments between these two gentlemen "queerbaiting" and not "bromance"? Because these moments are a) obviously intentional, b) completely sporadic, and c) never spoken of again.
Tumblr media
For example: There's a scene (which you can see a gifset of here) where the two of them are at a restaurant frequented by the cop, who brings a lot of ladies there on dates. When the waiter points this out, useless noodle boy says, I'm his date. The waiter looks mildly surprised by this, the cop says not to listen to his bullshit, and that's the end of it. The scene moves on. There is no further discussion of this comment. It does not affect their relationship.
That's the essence of queerbaiting: that little on-purpose nod to the homoerotic tension between the two, in a way that isn't a joke but also isn't not a joke, and either way is never going to happen. (In fact, the show is going to go out of its way to make sure that ship gets sunk, so, uh, get your fanfiction lifeboats ready for that.)
Tumblr media
A true queerbaiting move is something that should make a difference in a relationship, but doesn't. It should make a difference that our cop is so comfortable in the noodle boy's personal space that he invades it at will. It doesn't. It should make a difference that noodle boy keeps getting real weird every time the cop has a date with a girl. It doesn't. Those are some real romantic moves the two of them keep pulling, and then nothing comes of them.
Tumblr media
I had this show sold to me as being incredibly shippy, to the point of being even more so than its censored-BL contemporaries. And ... well, it is and it isn't. It has textually gayer individual moments, but it is much less pervasively gay. It's clear from the start that it's going to throw all its actual relationship points into its canon het romance. When it comes to these boys, the show is toying with you. It knows you want to see those boys smooch, just as much as it knows (and it knows you know) they're never gonna.
How you feel about this is entirely up to you -- and indeed, it may be a dealbreaker on the whole drama for you. If you are inclined to pitch a fit when your ship does not become canon, you'll be happier somewhere else. If, however, you see this as a delightful opportunity to do whatever the hell you want with the situation as it is presented, all the while enjoying little moments of startlingly blatant homoeroticism between two handsome dudes, well, here you are!
Tumblr media
(I mean, if you want my take on it, what needs to happen is that the cop and the girl need to fuck while the useless noodle boy watches with asexual bisexual interest, and then they all need to snuggle with the noodle boy in the middle so they can both annoy him appropriately, but your mileage may vary.)
4. The multicultural extravaganza!
1920s Shanghai had a lot going on in terms of cultures and languages, and this show actually does a fair job of representing that.
Tumblr media
By now, I've seen a number of shows set during this era, and they all at least acknowledge the international nature of the city -- usually by mentioning the French Concession and having a handful of evil Japanese characters. However, this is the first time I've seen a show go to such lengths to actually show so many non-Chinese characters onscreen, even to the point of making one a recurring character supporting the main squad.
Tumblr media
Salim is the best. Whatever he is being paid, it's not enough. He's Qiao Chusheng's right-hand man, which means he is also the dude who most often has to put up the main trio's bullshit. (The actor himself is also a dude with a pretty cool backstory, which is another great layer.) He's sharp, he's loyal, he's patient, and he looks great with his shirt off. He's got it all!
Other non-Chinese characters include a white Jewish art collector (I'd issue a warning for period-typical antisemitism, except … honestly, it's mostly just confused), a sadistic priest who maybe is supposed to be Italian, a completely different priest who [last episode spoiler], and three whole sinister white dudes behind it all.
Tumblr media
It's not just the world coming to China, though! A large number of the Chinese characters are said to have spent significant time outside of China, whether for business or for schooling. Near the end, when some characters are discussing moving away from Shanghai, they consider a number of foreign cities as potential destinations.
Here's a delightful detail: When Lu Yao and his sister speak English, they're dubbed by actors with posh British accents who sound like native (or near-native) English-speakers. This makes perfect sense, because both of the siblings did a lot of their schooling in the UK. When Bai Youning speaks English, she's dubbed by someone who speaks English very well but also has a noticeable Chinese accent, which makes perfect sense for her character's background. And Qiao Chusheng never speaks English at all, because he's a street tough who has no reason to know more than three words.
Tumblr media
...This is also kind of weird to say about something literally made in China, but go with me on it: Everything's kind of got that Art Deco Orientalist vibe to it. It looks like China's idea of what Britain's idea of China during that period would have looked like. The result comes across less like what 1920s Shanghai would actually have looked like, and more what an ad for 1920s Shanghai would have looked like. It's a fascinating aesthetic, and more so for how it's mostly pretty subtle. The show isn't some visual extravaganza, but it's always very nice to look at, and I appreciate that in a show.
5. A wonderful horrible protagonist
A lot of mystery-themed prestige television involves an asshole genius detective who gets away with being a dick to everyone because he's sooooo smart, while all his long-suffering friends and colleagues spend a lot of time doing damage control for him because, sigh, he's an asshole but we need him, genius excuses all dickhead behavior, we'll always make exceptions for him because he's just ever so special. (Watch histrionic sage hbomberguy's video on Sherlock if you're unfamiliar with the trope.)
Tumblr media
Lu Yao is an asshole genius detective, but one who winds up spending most of his time being an asshole to a) people who deserve it, or b) his horrible friends who will be assholes right back at him. When he is awful to the people who don't deserve it, the show smacks him pretty hard on the nose for it and makes him apologize.
This is a show where you'll figure out pretty quckly if you'll love it or hate it, because if you love Lu Yao, you'll love it, and vice versa. He carries most of the show himself, with his goofy charm and his incredibly bendy slenderman body and his ability to make the one competent person he knows both protect him and give him money.
Tumblr media
Like so.
For my own part, I find him intensely charming, and I think a lot of this has to do with Hu Yitian's ability to play him as an affectionately bullyable weenie who needs to get shoved in a locker for his own good. He's the worst, and it's comically endearing instead of offputting because at the end of the day, he really does have a good heart. He's just also lazy as heck and disinclined to do anything that he does not want to be doing, and really, aren't we all?
Tumblr media
As I alluded to in point 3, he comes across as real asexual. He's just not that interested in sex, and he is in fact pretty uncomfortable in situations where he finds himself the subject of someone else's sexual desires. He's perfectly capable of romantic feelings! I mean, not only does he get Bai Youning as a love interest, we actually meet one of his ex-girlfriends. He's just not partciularly horny about them -- which is even more noticeable as a sharp contrast to how extremely horny Qiao Chusheng is for just about everyone, but this exasperating little dork in particular.
Tumblr media
(Like seriously, 90% of the time, Chusheng is about to explode with sexual frustration at Lu Yao's skinny oblivious ass.)
This isn't to say you couldn't get Lu Yao into bed, because you absolutely could, and he'd probably have a good time. You'd just have to remove all distractions from the room, lest his ADHD ass wind up running off to solve a crime mid-coitus.
Tumblr media
Twiggy little nightmare man. Garbage-animal boy. Love him.
sidebar: A word about the ending
I'm going to be vague and talk about general vibes instead of specific events, but you should still skip this section if you want to remain completely unspoiled. Jump to the picture of Chusheng holding the sledgehammer.
Okay, so, a lot of people do not like the ending, and I'm including myself in that number. I honestly don't know if they got rushed and had to wrap everything pretty last-minute, or if they thought they might get a second season out of it and were leaving things open-ended accordingly. Either way, it's incredibly unsatisfying.
I think there's a clue that the show didn't actually want to end this way, and it's not actually in the text of the show itself. Every episode, between the last scene and the start of the credits, you get to see a couple still frames from the episode (usually some of the queerbaity ones). After the very final shot of the series, you get two images: the boys hugging goodbye, and Chusheng's upset face. That's not a resolution! That is at best a "to be continued..." ending!
But no, that's it. That's all, folks.
It's not quite an ending so bad it ruins the rest of the show, mostly because it doesn't feel finished, so it's less like you're watching a car being deliberately driven into a wall because someone thought that was the best route to take, and more like you're watching someone leave a car on the railroad tracks because they figured they'd have time to move it later.
As far as I know, there has been no noise made about a second season. These 36 episodes are the entirety of the narrative. It had the distinct misfortune to start airing in March 2020, which wasn't exactly prime time for planning sequels, and that seems to have been that. (There is a 2022 show called Checkmate that stars the two main guys in extremely similar roles, also adapting Agatha Christie stories, but it's apparently pretty meh? Somebody else who's actually seen it, go ahead and weigh in here.)
I'll say that if you turn off the episode right after Lu Yao gets out the handcuffs, you'll save yourself the worst of it the awkward and unsatisfying moments (though I'm impressed at your willpower to stop watching something five minutes from the end). That's not all of it, though. Structurally, there are several situations rushed to a resolution and loose threads left flapping untied in the breeze. I guess stopping before the last five minutes simply saves you the hope that it'll pull a good ending out of the fire, because it won't.
And let's be real: The more you hate Bai Youning and her romance with Lu Yao, the more you'll hate the ending. (Not that liking those elements will necessarily make you like the ending, of course, because I'm a fan of hers and I still think the ending is butts.) The ending is already like a pair of uncomfortable shoes; if the het romance especially makes you grind your teeth, the ending becomes a pair of uncomfortable shoes that also have a rock in them. A lot of the comments online indicate plenty of people dropped the show when they learned the het romance would be endgame. It's a pretty common dealbreaker.
Oh well. Bring on the fanfic, I say! Those of us who are used to taking a sledgehammer to canon are unafraid.
Tumblr media
Smash it, baby.
Still want to see some of these mysteries?
Both iQiyi and Viki have the answer to your sleuthing!
It's not a perfect show -- as evidenced by my digression about the ending -- but it's a lot of fun. If you can handle the occasional foible and some eyebrow-raising moments, you're in for a good time with some attractive people that occasionally tastes very gay.

omg yay!! okay so after reading that the reader in your lovely pyramid head fanfic befriended most of the killers (it was so cute😿) and comforting them, encouraging them, etc. i got an idea for a request with jiwoon!!
so, he develops a kind of weird friendship with a survivor, whos willing to listen to his music and his story in general and thay obviously boost his already gigantic ego but also it makes him completly enamored with the reader!!
and i imagine him to be really clingy and all, so he probably just suprises her by hugging her while shes repairing a gen or scrolling through the entity's realm and he gets so overprotective sometimes, he wont let anyone come near them when theyre together and keeps calling her affectionate names and other stuff bc hes in love!! why wouldnt he do that . but the surv is literally so obvious and dense she thinks those are just friendly gestures.
so um, this got really out of hand and is probably chaotic af, but based on that, could i request something about him acting like that? or just soft in general fic/drabble with jiwoon?? depends on what you feel like writing🥰
First of all, I’m so happy that you liked my work! Secondly, I hope you’ll like this too! <3
Tumblr media
Though he was the newest killer brought by the Entity, for the longest time, he never got to have his go at a trial, so he got incredibly frustrated and bored, took his bat and went into the woods by himself to hit trees and bushes by himself.
At first, he was excited to be taken in a place where he could kill at his leisure without any consequence, but what CAN he kill if he can’t go array outside of the trials, and he’s not being taken to one already?
After he’s channeled most of his frustrations on whatever vegetation he found, he started singing some of his songs and practicing his choreography out there where nobody could bother him.
Or so he thought.
He wasn’t the only one with the brilliant idea of taking a walk - You, also, took frequent walks away from the Survivor’s Camp because they were never that nice with you, hence why you got along much better with the Killers.
So when you heard some acapella singing, you got really excited and went ahead to look who’s the artist - But you were also pretty shy, so as soon as you picked up a human silhouette, you hid behind a tree and peeked at the eccentric looking man.
He was singing in Korean, and from his looks, outfit and dancing skills, he looked like a k-pop idol.
He was so talented though, you were absolutely mesmerised!
As soon as he made his final move and stopped singing, as if basking in the silent applause that he would get, should he have been at a real show... He actually DID hear clapping.
Turning around, he noticed your timid form from behind the tree, cheering on him, wearing a bashful smile on your face.
“That was really beautiful! Congratulation for you show!” he was mesmerised beyond belief --
Someone in this shithole was actually appreciating his art! He was in love! Oh, he was sooo~ in love!
He will walk all cocky towards you, putting his arm around your shoulder and pull you flushed to his chest, calling you ‘Jagi’ before he pulled out his phone to show you his full discography and pointing out at which time there were the screams of his victims synthetized, and he started explaining how he mixed them into the music, how he found out the way to manipulate the screams and grunt of pain, where to hit the person to create each sound and what not.
You didn’t care much about how macabre it sounded - You had already got used to all this chaotic mess - So you were really captivated by the whole process of creating peak art.
From then on, Jiwoon would come to the Survivor’s Camp ALL the time just to grab you by the wrist and pull you to his camp or into the forest - He’ll have you dance with him while he sang or hummed, or will have to be the spectator to his shows while he performed for you.
Sometimes you think that he has no idea what your name is, because he only calls you pet names like ‘Jagi’, ‘Jagiya’, ‘Yeobo’ or ‘Nae sarang’ and many more.
Whenever the two of you are together, he’ll keep an arm around you, sometimes his hands even wandering here and there, and would kiss your cheeks, neck or jaw, just to show off how you are his and nobody can even look at you.
His favourite time is when the two of you are in a trial and he gets to surprise you by jump-hugging you when you least expect it.
Jiwoon would drag you around the whole place just so he could show off the sounds he gets out of the victims while he mori’s them - Oh, he gets so cocky, especially when you point out which song and what part of it can fit with the same kind of scream the dead survivor made - You were really paying attention to him!
He would dip you back and pull you into a deep kiss - You really managed to stroke and inflate his ego to the maximum.
He doesn’t have much influence when in comes to keeping other killers at bay during their trial with you, but at least when you’re with him, you know you’re having fun and will always escape without a single scratch or bruise.
After all, The Trickster only loves your sweet sounds and sighs, that make for a completely different and out of bounds melody that only he gets to listen to.

i know i'm late and i want to hear about all your wips tbh but i have to admit that "Boot Worship + Hate sex (COD/Konig x Reader)" got me going real 👀👀👀 (--direwombat)
Fun fact! This is the fic that totally derailed my kinktober! Both between the fact I was rapidly realizing that the word counts I was hitting with my entries was not sustainable with my schedule (3.2k before clothes even came off) and I hit a wall and was hating it (although looking back months later, it’s substantially better than I initially thought it was so maybe I’ll try to finish it. Surely no one will mind if I do kinktober in January/February baha)
Konig being an asshole, unhealthy work dynamics, boot worship, hint of puppy play under the cut
"My problem?" he intones. A man of his stature doesn't need to yell but God does she wish he would. Her skin fucking crawls at the smooth, level cadance of his voice. There's a fire in his eyes that she can see now that she's close enough to him (even if she has to crane her neck up).
He doesn't stop advancing with those slow, deliberate, heavy steps until her nerves finally get the best of her and a single foot lifts and steps back away from him.
"My problem is you are young and cocky and entitled. That for all your talent you don't know what to do with any of it and I'm not sure if you're more of a disappointment because you lack the discipline to hone that skill, or because your newfound independent streak one day will lead to one of your brothers being killed in the line of duty trying to cover your ass, when you are the one who has caused this entire problem to begin with."
For all your talent rings in her ears- it's the first compliment she can recall him ever giving, even if it's placed so nicely in front of the fact that he views her as a disappointment and a liability.
"You are fucking impossible to please, you know that? I have no idea why the hell you've been gunning for me since the day I stepped foot in here. I have tried so hard to prove myself to you that I know how to do my damn job correctly and all you can do is micromanage me to the point I have no choice but to fail because I'm not a damned mind reader and you keep moving the goal post. You're so damn difficult to work with and I just-" Her words cut off abruptly as he steps closer into her space. It's actually incredibly frustrating for her that even in the midst of what she is sure will turn into a knockdown, drag out, ground zero, "clear the air" fight- at the end of the day she knows why König's blatant disapproval bothers her so much.
She wants this man so badly that it makes her look stupid. She barely keeps the cognitive brain function to remember how to dot her I's and cross her Ts correctly when he's watching her. Tells herself it’s just frustration and the constant lowgrade anxiety he’s got her tizzied up in from the incessant disapproval as her fingers find their way below the hemline of her underwear at night.
"You want my approval?" The way he’s crowding her space shouldn’t be making her stomach flip like this. “Let’s start simple and see if you can follow simple fucking orders, hm? Kneel.”
This is out of line yet she complies immediately. It’s a hell of a dissonance, being so utterly pissed off beyond all belief at someone who she fantasizes about constantly.
She goes to the obvious line of thought- that he wants her to suck his dick.
She should be telling him to go to hell and booking it straight for Majka and Ridgeback.
Overachiever that she is, once she’s on the ground looking up at him- he has to crane his neck down just to look at her-, her hands moving up towards the buckle of his belt.
“What. Are. You. Doing?” Each word has more bite to it than the last and she flinches like he’s slapped her despite him not having made a move.
“I-” she stammers, “I thought-”
He cuts her off “That’s your fucking problem. You keep thinking. You are not paid to think, you are paid to follow fucking orders. I only told you to kneel. You. Don’t. Listen.”
God he is such a fucking asshole.
“You want to act like a puppy with no manners? That is fine. I know how to train a bitch to heel.”
Even for all the vitriol she has dealt with in her career, she's never quite been spoken to so callously. Of course he has no hesitation in doing so, however- why would he.
She should be shooting up to her feet and leaving his office, and yet she sits perfectly still as he takes a half step closer to her. The bulge of his groin- jesus he's not even hard, it doesn't look like he is at least- is at eye level with her before one of those giant hands of his reaches out and pushes at her shoulder- makes her sit on her heels with a featherweight touch as assuredly as if he'd put real effort into it.
She doesn't balk or shy from him even when one hand takes a fistful of her hair to hold her still.
She shouldn't be allowing this. This is humiliating and debasing and she has not spent the last years of her life becoming excellent at her job just to be treated as a living doll.
And yet she sits perfectly still even as he moves one of his massive feet between her legs. She doesn't sink down onto it nor lift up away from it, allowing him to place his boot where he deems fit.
"Don't think I don't know," he starts, and she stares at him with wide eyes. "You're not quite as subtle as you think you are." Oh that is not ideal by any stretch of the imagination.
"I think you lash out because you want my attention. You're so focused on it you aren't paying attention, and subsequently digging yourself deeper into the little hole you've made for yourself with me." he continues like he isn't holding her like a dog on a leash.
"So we're going to get a handle on this, because I'm not going to be as indulgent of your little temper tantrums going forward."
The boot scoots ever so slightly more snug underneath her and she tries to ignore the fact she hasn't had any male attention in quite a long time. She has her faults, sure but she is not about to hump his leg like the ill mannered puppy he wants to claim her to be.
"That's a good girl, Schatz, waiting for me like you are supposed to. Maybe you can be coachable after all. Now, you very clearly have some built up tension that needs an appropriate outlet,"
She bites back a snort. Not a single thing about this situation is appropriate.
"So we will start with releasing some of that pent up energy. So go ahead and use my boot like a good little puppy and we can get on with our day, hm?"
It is never too late to ask me about my WIPs!

Here we find extremely curious natives with a desire and ease to obtain different types of knowledge. They stand out for their intelligence and enthusiasm when it comes to diving into topics that they are passionate about or like very much. They have an incomparable sense of humor that arises from their social charisma, they are very witty and are capable of lighting up the humor of a site. It is very important for them to project themselves as a capable and intelligent person and they do not like to be fooled. Their pride and self-esteem often lies in the level of intelligence they have or want to have. Something for which they are not usually given the credit they deserve is their unmatched creativity, bordering on genius, they can be people who have that facility to do things that others do something unique by putting their own touch on it. Many of them have a talent for languages, becoming bilingual or speaking more than two languages, this of course depends on many factors, but here is the potential. There is also a potential for esoteric abilities, they are people for whom their beliefs are important and can be very devoted to them, they can develop intuition and other abilities that help them delve into esotericism.
In them there is a desire to be able to enjoy life, either because they feel that they have not been able to fully enjoy it or simply to satisfy that curiosity. They are very interesting people, because they are the classic person who relates to others in an incredible way (perhaps not being very emotionally expressive, but being kind and friendly) easily captivating with their appeal and charm, however, they are also very important for them to have that time to themselves. Introspection is very important to them, as well as getting to know each other from head to toe. Many of them find it difficult to bring out this stereotypical adventurous and incredibly sociable side that is assigned to natives with this placement, but it is a matter of feeling that they are with the people and in the right place. Something that is very faithful to them and I already mentioned a little is their fascination for travel. They love the idea of seeing different places and exploring other things beyond what they are used to seeing. Your mind needs to be constantly stimulated, besides it seems to be a place that you will never finish visiting, and a place that keeps random data in every corner that you don't expect.
These natives are quite observant, becoming very capable of learning important lessons through contemplating the mistakes of others, they do not judge, rather they take what they see and learn. They possess a wisdom that makes them perfect candidates to be the counselors of their friends and acquaintances, who may see them as superior in some way. It is not surprising that they can mentor and guide others (the sign and the degree can give us more clues as to what they can guide others, along with conjunctions or other tight aspects). This placement shows that the natives can be very successful if they decide to complete their higher education, having enough prestige or at least a great reputation. It is likely that some teacher, tutor or guide has greatly impacted and influenced them. Another of the sectors in which they can be very lucky is travel, where fortune, good experiences and happiness augur them. The theme of the father can be quite varied, the native may have a foreign father who was born in another country than the native's place of origin. Other chances are that this is an academic, intelligent man or who works in the education or law sector. Or a father who does not usually see much physically.

Mobile Suit Gundam - The Witch From Mercury Season 2 Episode 5: The Prodigal Son Returns
Tumblr media
Man oh man oh man. Where to even begin. The best character arc of a deuteragonist/side character within easily the last year? The shifting tides that pull Suletta under its surface? The kickass mecha fights? All the various plotting and scheming that forms countless webs? There's a lot to this episode, but the vast majority of it is placed under Guel and Suletta, and for incredibly good reason.
I oh so desperately want to talk about Guel Jeturk and his character arc through GWitch, but I really do need to start with Suletta. Right from the get go, Miorine is helping us establish the issues of Suletta. It's almost a bit of a slander episode for the poor girl, and by the end I think you'll agree that it's a pretty incredible choice to make.
Anyways, we start with Suletta excitedly waiting for Miorine outside her room before consistently walking behind Miorine. Behind her in the hallways, behind her on the stairs, and in all sorts of camera angles. The pair have had that distance bubble up between them from earlier conversations, but here it's Miorine creating that gap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was also an interesting addition in terms of layouts and conversation. Suletta is still behind Miorine of course, but there's a mobile suit that walks by in the background, providing the audible footsteps of its massive frame while Suletta talks about celebrating a birthday. It very strongly speaks to the out of place nature of Suletta's constant positivity in the current outlook and nature of Astacassia.
Tumblr media
Then, we get some here and there pieces about Grassley plotting with Peil to lead the Benerit Group, and Elan five trying to get Suletta to give him Aerial. Sorta the usual stuff, but we kick things off from there. Suletta enters a duel with Guel, where Aerial is up for collateral. Miorine and Guel (and even Ericht) end up plotting against Suletta in the duel, forcing her to lose.
This loss builds directly off of Miorine's conversations with Prospera, and even her interactions with Suletta herself during the beginning of the episode. Miorine hates that Suletta is so easily controlled by her mother, and that she's entirely blinded by what she's been given. An undefeatable mobile suit, friends and people that will flock to her, comfort and happiness to push through the darker moments. She hasn't said a single word of Sophie dying in an earlier episode, but will excitedly move towards planning a birthday for someone.
Her mother has her and Aerial strung up like puppets, and Miorine so intensely desires to break that, to allow Suletta to be free and her own person. It's just that, in doing so, they essentially have to break Suletta apart. Rip her from her sister Aerial who has protected her, wrench Suletta from Prospera's hand, and completely isolate her from all that she's known. They're basically pulling a Bob on Suletta and I'm 100% here for it.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Bob/Guel. Absolutely best boy of the season and year, incredible character arc, impeccable style, and talents and abilities that stand up to the early makings of a God. His name should be screamed from the rooftops to celebrate his story.
It's just so amazing. He comes back with purpose, with resolve. Not for himself alone, but for his brother, his family. His house. He wants to bring back his company's golden age, give his father something to look down on with a smile, something that could earn his father's pride.
And where does he get this resolve? None other than Suletta. The girl that's had everything in her life, the girl that's embarrassed Guel on more than one occasion. He takes the words of this girl that has been manipulated beyond belief, and finds his own strength in them. His own resolve that places Suletta in his shadow, and moves forward. He moves past death, his failures, his inability to save those around him. He looks towards his future with hope, and the strength to turn his dreams into a reality. It's just so incredibly beautiful and strong. This man had lost it all. He lost the position of holder, he was expelled from school, he killed his own father, had a young innocent girl die in his arms. And now, he's come back to school to reclaim his crown and forge his own path in life. I can't get enough of it, I really can't. Such an incredible character arc told with such little screen time. Guel deserves the world, and by God he's gonna reach out and grab it with his own two hands.
Also, this moment of his duel with Suletta is beyond amazing. They consistently point out his aversion to piloting a mobile suit. Of how the last two times he was in one, someone has died. He feels sick, his head's spinning and he breaks out into cold sweats. He freezes up, forced to relive his trauma and deepest terrors. It's such a wonderful depiction of it, that is complemented by various other standpoints, like the aversion that one girl expresses to the fight.
But the crowning moment of this duel, is a single moment of fear from Guel. He's frozen up in the cockpit as Suletta bears down on him, solely focused on winning for Miorine. He can't do anything, he sees his father's mobile suit before his eyes, it too bearing down on him, intent on killing him. And it's not some "strength" that pulls him out of this spiral, it's not Guel's willpower alone that snaps him out of it. It's his resolve. His resolve to hold onto the present, to keep those around him close to his heart, to make sure he can do all that he can to live up to who he wants to be. It's the cries of his friends, of his brother and the people in his house, that give him that resolve. Far from it for this moment to be "the power of friendship" though, it's a piece of solidarity and support that speaks to greater depths than pure "friendship", and is yet another amazing aspect to this story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, just another astonishingly wonderful episode. We're back in the school setting, but we haven't lost a lot of that edge that we gained from the excursion to Earth. Stakes are still high as blood runs a deep crimson and tensions rise among factions and groups. Guel comes to reclaim his crown as holder, and in doing so perfectly breaks apart Suletta with the help of Miorine. We begin a downwards tumble for the Mercurian Witch, and it seems like it's just the beginning of ripping the threads that Prospera carefully placed within Suletta out.

"Foliage, Flowers, and Feelings, Oh My!" in Step By Step Ep. 8.
The flower motifs were rampant throughout all of episode eight, more so than the majority of any of the previous episodes. Maybe I was made aware because Jeng brought attention to them while he was preparing for his date, ahem, market research with Pat this time around, but man, everywhere I looked on screen, I could only focus on the flowers.
Since a lot of the shots that had the flowers were blurred, take my analysis with a heavy amount of skepticism. Not to mention, my discussion of the flowers and their meanings are deriving from a Western point of view; flowers and their significance can differ greatly between cultures. [Specifically my understanding derives from my Latin-American and American upbringing with the meanings behind certain flowers and any research I came upon, so if you have any better cultural understanding that is more applicable, feel free to sound off].
There was so much imagery with flowers in this episode that I'm going to attempt to organize this analysis with specific scenes where I, personally, could not help but immediately notice the flowers and become hyper-aware of them.
Love Blooms Best at a Restaurant
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While we see flowers and plants in the first quarter of the episode, they're typically at the very corners of the foreground, heavily blurred, or rather small, where it's presence is easily forgotten (i.e., the tiny plant on Put's living room table.) The plants and flowers really start to become a greater motif after Jeng requests the first restaurant to fill the empty space that he rented out with bouquets.
Now there are so many different flowers that make up the several bouquets that are brought in by the restaurant staff, so I'll briefly mention the most commercially known and their significance, while delving a little deeper into the flowers that were a bit harder to identify but that I strongly believe are in the bouquets.
First, the most obvious of the flowers were the red and pink roses that make a portion of the vase that is put at the table where Jeng and Pat sit. Pink roses typically take on the significance of admiration and gratitude, while red roses are generally used to signify love and passion. Hidden behind those, which we are only able to catch a glimpse at in far-away shots before the vase gets turned, are yellow snapdragons. There is a longstanding belief that when you hide a snapdragon, it's going to make you appear to be enchanting and amiable; this often results with the snapdragon being correlated with good-luck and deception.
Meanwhile behind Jeng, there is a huge bouquet that is made up of pink lilies, and what I believe to be, but not 100% sure, pink orchids. Pink lilies are generally used to depict new love, friendship, and admiration, while pink orchids are generally for thoughtfulness, refinement, and mature charm.
The flowers here seem to be very representative of both Jeng's mentality and the current state of relationship that Pat and Jeng have. Prior to this, Pat had gone from cancelling their meeting (destroying any hope that Jeng had) to asking if he was still up to going out (restoring it slightly, thank you Ae and Beam.) Jeng has made it apparent that he admires Pat for his talent and work ethic, praising Pat when he does a job well done, but this admiration has gone far beyond "you're a great worker", which Pat is completely unaware of. For Pat, this is just another work event that he is doing as a favor to his boss, without knowing that Jeng wishes is more than just work and how much effort he put into making this "not-date" "date-like". While deception has an incredibly negative connotation, in a way this is applicable here, this is Jeng's pretense to spend more time with Pat outside of work.
Jeng has been treading the line of boss and loverboy lightly, because he is more than aware of the consequences that could occur due to his attraction and feeling towards Pat. So he does what he does best, delve into work and find a way to incorporate it so he can spend some quality time with Pat, even if Pat isn't fully aware of his intentions, which is why it catches Jeng off-guard when Pat points out how much this outing resembles a date. This is a new chapter that Jeng is trying to navigate and breach, even without fully knowing the way to get there. He's learning how Pat ticks, when Pat is silent and what it likely means, and how much pain and burden Pat carries, even when its unnecessary. He's seen Pat at some of his worst moments, at his tactless moments, and he's falling for all sides of him, even if Pat is fully oblivious at this point. And Jeng is so proud of himself, when he gets the restaurant to look just right for when Pat arrives.
Running Leads the Heart to the Silver Trumpet Tree
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second full shot of flowers in this episode was after Pat and Jeng narrowly made it out from running into Chot, specifically after they finally came to a stop after sneakily running away from him, in order to not be caught fraternizing outside of the workplace. When they finally come to a stop, Silver [Yellow] Trumpet Tree [Tabebuia Aurea], also known as Lueang India (Yellow India) in Thai, cover the background when Pat and Jeng have finally come to a halt. While it can be easily mistaken with the Golden Shower Trees, which I believe is the national flower of Thailand, the Yellow Trumpet trees are as common but are distinct in the clusters that they form.
While the there is no distinct meaning or symbolism behind Silver Trumpet Tree, the Trumpet flowers, generally, have a more positive interpretation on its symbolism. Yellow Trumpet flowers tend to be referred to the Angel's Trumpet, which really leads to the auspicious significance that is attached. Depending on the culture that is interpreting the flower, the significance of the trumpet flower can range from prosperity and good luck to new beginnings.
Here, we find ourselves with Pat and Jeng running off in an attempt to avoid being seen by Chot. Jeng had just gone through the effort of making renting out the prior restaurant and decorating with as many bouquets as possible in attempt to make the non-date, date-adjacent. Yet, while this plan seems to be partially ruined, I think Jeng should be thanking Chot. For the first time, they held hands and weren't letting go. While Put and Pat may have been balanced physically, Pat was always being left behind by Put, even if it was unintentional. Put was the one leading their relationship, taking the first steps to enter and exit out of Pat's life, yet in comparison with Jeng, while Jeng may tower over Pat, he has always been the one to push Pat rather than pull, this was the first time that he was pulling Pat with him. And let me just say, Jeng was not the first one to let go. Their relationship is evolving.
Pat had cancelled meeting with Jeng, after not feeling well about breaking up with Put. Put was his first love, he was the one that had been abandoned, but it's still difficult to come to terms that the love and man you had idealized prior was no longer the man that you were in love with, no matter how hard you attempt to fix together the pieces that had remained. Yet, instead of wallowing in the pain, Pat reached out again to Jeng and asked him if they could still go out, even though he was the one the previously opted out. If Pat being proactive, even when clueless, isn't a step into a new beginning, I don't what is—
Barriers made visible with Peonies and Peperomia
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After running away from Chot, they found themselves in a new restaurant, one that partakes in the tradition of plate smashing. Throughout this who sequence, we have the the ornate bouquet in the background that is creating a visual barrier, dividing the restaurant in two sides. In doing so, we're also seeing a rather physical divide between Jeng and Pat. Now I'm sure there are color theories that play into this, with the hues of purple at play, but we don't get a closer, albeit still blurred, look of the flowers until Pat gets up to smash his own plate.
There are two plants that I'm almost certain that are making up the parts of the bouquet. First, what I believe to be red peonies, specifically closed darker red peonies, not yet fully bloomed. Second, it seems that the foliage that is being used to fill the bouquet is watermelon peperomia.
Now Peonies are one of the flowers that have a huge variety of origin stories, so I'm going to stick with the Greek origin story of the Red Peonies since they were in a Greek-themed restaurant (where they're smashing plates to throw away their bad luck). In a water-downed version of the origin story, the red peony is tied to a nymph named Paeonia. Paeonia was incredibly beautiful and attracted the attention of Apollo, resulting in a lot of flirtatious exchanges between the two of them. As they were flirting, Paeonia becomes aware of Aphrodite's presence and turns deep red. Out of spite, Aphrodite turns Paeonia into a red peony. As a result, red peonies are typically understood as a sign of bashfulness, passion, and love.
On the other hand, watermelon peperomia, or more generally, peperomia tends to take on the significance of hope and in certain areas of Latin America, are given as gifts to say that 'Everything will be alright.'
First off, this whole sequence of scenes took me incredibly long to get through just because it felt so intimate both due to Jeng's dilemma in confessing and Pat's own internal fight against his misery.
This whole portion was filled with different points where Pat unintentionally gave Jeng openings. From ordering the Lovers' Special to Pat telling Jeng directly, "I prefer the time that we were nothing like a boss and subordinate." The frankness that Pat was giving Jeng, even if he was a bit tipsy, renewed Jeng's hope that just maybe Pat shares some of the same feelings that he does. As @respectthepetty mentioned here Jeng keeps having an internal battle with his love for Pat this whole episode, so the frankness that Pat is gifting Jeng is like a crumb trail that Jeng is more than happy to swallow up. Giving him a semblance of hope, that just maybe, they could go back to who they were before they met as boss and employee.
Which is what leads into the scene of Jeng's imaginary confession to Pat. This whole series of scenes we're given a glimpse into Jeng's internal monologue, and as @shouldiusemyname stated here, so much of Jeng's internal conflict deals with the uncertainty of where he stands with Pat, because even though he's doing everything to subtly show his interest, Pat is rather oblivious. Throughout this whole dinner, Jeng was sending smoke signals that Pat kept putting out. It's palpable that this is out of Jeng's comfort zone, but he is still trying. Yet, he sees the glimpses of pain that Pat has on his shoulder, and instead of wishing for his own happiness or for Pat's love, instead he wishes that everything will get better for Pat. He, very literally, smashes away Pat's sadness.
Moss my heart and hope to die
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I thought Pat and Jeng were surround by plants and flowers before, when they made their way to the speakeasy, they were not only in a presumed queer bar that Jeng frequents [@chicademartinica reaction really mirrored mine here], but they were surrounded by foliage in every room of this bar. The main distinction between the plants here and in other scenes is that the vast majority of the plants in the bar seemed to be non-flowering. Yet, the greenery was always present, either in an actual planter or even as a mural on the walls and beams of this bar.
Now there were so many leafy greens here, that it would be rather difficult to even attempt to pinpoint what plants are where during what time, but I will say the Spanish Moss, that was adorning the exterior of the speakeasy entrance and framing the right side of the shot, was very apparent.
There's a couple legends that come with the significance of Spanish Moss, but the most popular one derives from Spanish legend. According to Spanish lore, a Spanish explorer [some times told to be a pirate] had attempted to 'buy' a beautiful native woman. Obviously, she feared him and ended up running away, attempting to flee his grasp. He pursued her and in a final attempt to escape, she climbed high up into a tree. In his attempt to capture her he follows her up the tree, but becomes entangled in the tree and dies there, the only thing that remained was his 'grey beard' that continued to grow and spread throughout the tree.
Spanish moss, when used spiritually, is typically used to promote protection for the home, as a sign of security, and a general promise of protection. While some may have a preconceived notion of the plant being parasitic, they are also known for the healing qualities that they are able to provide.
Jeng had a specific purpose when he took Pat along to the bar that he frequents with Jaab and Pat goes along because, as @wen-kexing-apologist stated, he's being self-destructive and wants to forget all the pain from his second break-up with Put. Jeng was more than aware that Pat, even though he was shooting him smiles and having a generally good time for the most part, was struggling, hence why he insisted on one more outing before sending him home alone where he knew that Pat would be suffering alone.
Instead, he brings him to the one spot that, very likely, only his inner-circle would know about. This isn't just about the market research they're conducting, it wasn't even on the list that Pat had drawn up so that they could examine and consider applying to Jeng's own restaurant. A line was being crossed, a literal physical barrier in the shape of hidden bookshelf door, because this is Jeng bringing Pat into his personal life. Jeng has some degree of notoriety, which we haven't explicitly been show to what degree except for very select few moments, but everyone keeps mentioning [@respectthepetty has a great post collecting all these moments.] This speakeasy is likely a safe-haven for Jeng, a reprieve from the insane work-life balance that he lacks. This is Jeng inviting Pat into his "home"; this is where Jeng brings Pat to distract him from the pain that he is carrying.
The Spanish Moss adorning the entrance to Jeng's hidden reprieve, while can seem ominous at first glance, is actually an invitation of where Jeng can offer more to Pat. Yet, while Jeng is so love-stricken by Pat that his brain keeps short-circuiting, he knows that his love isn't what Pat needs at the moment. No matter how much he wants to confess, he instead offers to be Pat's safe-haven, much like this bar has been to him. A place, a person, where Pat can be candid of his emotions, where he can drop the false smiles, really simmer in his feelings and really have someone to depend on rather than running away to another country, because of the pain that he is carrying. A restorative and therapeutic location that Pat can run to, which he didn't have before.
Final Thoughts
Now do I think that the producers and set directors put this much deep thought into every, single, specific flowers that were present in all the scenes in Episode 8? I would be honestly shocked if they did. But, plants and flowers are inserted in the arts to symbolize something. Whether it be new beginnings or blooming love or anything in between, so even if they weren't being so intentional with the specific symbolisms, I do think they were utilizing the botanical references to develop subtle understandings of where Pat and Jeng are in their relationship at the moment.
Anyways, if you made your way through all my senseless rambling, first off, thank you, and secondly, I'll leave you with this:

aries birthday bash 2023 : gregory peck & pedro pascal
pedro pascal has proved himself to be quite the exceptional human. though his career has started to take off later than many people’s in hollywood, it is no less impressive because of it. in fact, i’m certain that it is more impressive because of it. pascal has done so much with his short time in the spotlight, it is hard to figure out just where to start. starring as javier peña in netflix’s narcos, pascal helped open the door to bilingual projects on a mass scale. not only that, but pascal himself has spoken openly and proudly of his ethnicity and nationality, aligning himself with his beloved chile in a way that has made it all too easy to want to root for him. he has proved himself, like gregory peck before him, to be exceptionally compassionate and kind individual, taking to using his platform to spread resources and speak out against injustices that have polluted our planet. apart from being an exceptional human, pedro is also a magnificently talented actor who has went above & beyond in every role they’ve allowed him to fill. from the memorable oberyn martell to the world-weary joel miller, pedro has time & time again proven himself to be an actor to watch. i’m incredibly proud to see his career blossom before my eyes, but even prouder as latina to witness him do it so proudly as a latino. to him i say, “feliz cumpleaños, pedrito. te amo mucho.”
i am under the impression that it is an exceptional thing to be remembered for your warmth and your compassion. for gregory peck to have been immortalized in the form of a gentle man named atticus finch is so fitting a destiny for someone of his nature. he was such a incredibly talented individual who spearheaded projects he believed wholeheartedly in, even if the public as a whole wasn’t ready to digest the message. in a time when keeping up with one’s squeaky clean, white public image was paramount in hollywood, gregory peck took on roles that dared to challenge society’s view as a whole - sometimes to the chagrin of many individuals. he starred in films such as gentleman’s agreement, to kill a mockingbird, and on the beach, films with messages that he felt needed to be said, and he supported them completely, not just as an actor, but a member of a society he wanted to see bettered. he always took on the role of the compassionate human, even when it wasn’t easy. he protested the vietnam war, earning him a spot on president nixon’s enemy list; he spoke openly about his belief that women should have access to birth control and abortion, despite his own catholicism and their stance on it; and he often took time to speak out against the injustices he saw happening, from reagan’s trying to elect corrupt supreme justices, to congress’s failure to ban teenagers from obtaining firearms, to merely advocating for a younger and more diverse hollywood eons before we started to see it. peck time and time again proved not only to be an exceptional actor in his decades long career, but an exceptional human too. i am so happy to be wishing him a happy heavenly birthday this week.
both of these men have filled my life and many others lives with lots of warmth, and i am forever grateful to be able to witness what they have done. in celebration of them both i have compiled a list of foundations & organizations that they both support/have supported. i think there is no better way to honor and celebrate two men such as these ones than giving and helping those around us. under the cut you will find the links & some information about them.
gregory peck:
la jolla playhouse is one of gregory peck’s creations. peck grew up in la jolla and the la jolla playhouse was a product of his wanting to bring theater to his community. you can read more about la jolla playhouse’s beginnings in this article called, “the curtain rises” by virginia butterfield. here is the link to donate to the theater itself, which is still operating today.
the american cancer association is an organization that peck found himself to be the national chairman of in 1966. you can support them by donating here.
gregory peck was on the national committee for handgun control incorporated, which was later renamed the brady center to prevent gun violence, and then just brandy. gregory peck was very vocal about his desire to see gun control take place, especially after the columbine shooting of 1999. brandy’s goal is to find a solution to the gun violence epidemic that consumes america and that has for many decades now. you can read about brandy, brandy’s plans, and make a donation to the organization here.
peck created a noted reading series at the central library in los angeles, where celebrities would get together and read their chosen material for library donors. peck himself was the honorary chair of the los angeles library foundation and greatly enjoyed taking hold of this project in his older years. you can learn more about peck’s reading series here, you can learn more about the library in general here, and you can donate here.

REVIEW: Theatre Aquarius' POLLYANNA the Musical... a heartfelt delight for the holiday season
Tumblr media
Emily Watt as Pollyanna Photography by: Dahlia Katz
Hamilton's Theatre Aquarius takes a bold, optimistic step with introducing a beloved children's book and classic live-action Disney adaptation starring Hayley Mills (who won a special Oscar for her role) to the stage with Pollyanna. There have been other adaptations throughout the years such as Polly, featuring an all-black leading cast and the most recent adaptation from 2003 is now 20 years old. Pollyanna was overdue for a retelling and her story, reimaged for the stage, fills Theatre Aquarius with light, love and infectious joy which couldn't have come at a better time during the holiday season.
The show wastes no time introducing the astounding Emily Watt as Pollyanna. We learn quickly of her situation: she is recently orphaned and sent to live with her aunt Polly whom she is named after. The town is intrigued by this frumpy little child who seems to have an almost unrealistically optimistic outlook given all she has been through. The opening number also wastes no time ensuring that the majority of the townsfolk, and by proxy, the audience, fall instantly in love with her. Watt's vocal and acting talents are, to put it mildly, incredible and she matches the skills of her seasoned castmates with a professionalism and grace well beyond her years. Look out for her. She is a star in the making.
Equally impressive is the breathtaking Jessica Sherman as Aunt Polly who, with extremely short notice, took the opening night lead while Michelle Barsach recovers from illness. Her stern and unwavering belief in duty is the much needed juxtaposition pitted against her gleeful niece and unlike the film, is the show's only true conflict. Watching Sherman's feelings play out through song was a refreshing way of understanding her past relationships and her change of heart is satisfying.
One of the unexpected stand out performances in the show is Adam Brazier as Pendleton, a disgruntled, hermitted man who is charmed by young Pollyanna and her ragamuffin friend Jimmy Bean (a sassy and delightful Athan Giazitzidis). His song Prisms was one of the few songs that actually stuck with me after the show, was sung with soaring emotion and really demonstrates the need to see people, places and things in a different light. He acts as a fatherly figure and there are moments on the stage where you can see he guides not only the characters of Pollyanna and Jimmy but the actors playing them as well which shows a real dedication and care toward his cast mates.
If Pollyanna is the heart of the show, the ensemble is truly its soul. Incredible performances from Linda Kash as cantankerous Mrs. Snow, Keith Savage as a jaw-dropping, unexpectedly tap dancing groundskeeper William, and Kelsey Verzotti as the eager and endearing maid Nancy. I also loved every moment Charlotte Moore had on stage, stealing the scene as the gossipy delight Widow Benton. Collectively, the ensemble are vocally stunning, enthusiastic and high energy. They embody the joy Pollyanna brings to their small town and carry it through even when tragedy strikes. Wonderful work by all.
It cannot be stressed enough how creatively designed this production is. The set design is minimalistic but the designs used pay great attention to the time period and takes the audience back to much simpler times. The lighting complements these designs and enhances the scene transitions beautifully. The only slight issue I had was seeing a large, foreboding looking tree in nearly every scene. As a film fan, I knew what that tree's presence meant and yet, it is never utilized beyond it being a set piece which I was slightly let down by. Clearly, as a staged musical, elements from the film versions needed to be altered for actor safety. The injury our beloved glad girl suffers is taken from the book's source material. This is my way of saying if you expect the musical to play out like the film, you will be surprised but hopefully not disappointed by the changes.
Pollyanna the Musical is a show that will warm the heart of any cynic. It is infectiously joyful, quick paced and leaves you feeling very grateful for what you have in life. Despite the current common use of the term to mean "excessively cheerful," the concept of Pollyanna's "glad game" as a method of coping with the real difficulties and sorrows that, along with luck and joy, will ultimately shape every life. This offers the opportunity for audience members to reflect on the world's current situations and how we can find glimmers of hope to change it for the better. Go and see Pollyanna the Musical this holiday season. You'll be glad you did.

What if 'Gundam SEED' was told from Flay's point of view? How would they approach it? Would it have been better?
For a long time, watching Gundam SEED, I would have said Flay was the most interesting character so I understand the appeal. 'X manipulates Y to exact revenge for Z while simultaneously being what Y needs in the moment and using this to avoid dealing with their own grief, fear and bigotry' is definitely a meaty premise.
However, this is also very clearly not the story SEED was interested in telling.
SEED is fundamentally about Kira and Athrun, and when I say 'fundamentally', I mean the show commits to the day being saved by two blokes in magic space robots who successfully blow up various bits of evil technology and/or bad guys because they're just that special. And to my mind, it's with this notion of 'special' that SEED's underlying flaw lies.
See, the Coordinators are definitively special. Textually, they can do things other humans cannot. We are told (and shown) that people are scared of them as a result. Yet this and Kira's struggles to be defined beyond his genes are obviously poor analogies for any real-world prejudice. It's 'being bullied for being smarter than everyone' logic, rather than how oppression or ethnic conflict actually work.
Basically, it's the X-Men. Hated and feared for being the brilliant ones, why oh why can't we just be treated as people.
Now, I like the X-Men. Always have. It's just, once you commit to inherent genetic 'specialness' of any kind, you back into a corner from which it is extremely hard to extricate yourself. Despite its token protests about Coordinators still needing to train, SEED presents a world where some people are just better. It embraces the idea of functional eugenics. There's nothing here of the nuance allowed by 'new-types' being analogous to new ways of thinking that emerge naturally from a changing world and are subverted or maximised by people who want to control the future. Nor does SEED turn around, as Gundam X did, and saying, nah, you're all random quirks of nature and/or incredibly lucky.
Eugenics is the explanation for why Kira is special. Someone literally bred a super-protagonist. That is a thing that is possible in this world.
So is Flay therefore right to fear the Coordinators?
Even as it presents her hatred and anger towards them as a flaw, SEED allows the possibility that the answer is 'yes'. Because it is reasonable to be wary of those who hold power over you, and the Coordinators come with power built in. Which is an exact inversion of the ways prejudice ascribes particular malevolence to groups who are, in fact, more vulnerable than people holding the prejudice.
I think a story centred on Flay over Kira would automatically be more interesting. If that's the criteria for 'better' then I must answer your question in the affirmative, straight up. The thing is, given all of the above, I can't in good conscience say it would address the stuff I don't like about what SEED is saying. As much as there are stories I love whose politics and worldview are quite at odds with my personal beliefs (currently delighted by Dracula, adore The Man Who Was Thursday, etc), I draw the line at centering lazy misconceptions about bigotry and oppression. And you would need to centre those things if you spent more time with Flay because, within the confines of what is presented in SEED as it stands, they form a significant part of her character.
If you were to take out the whole concept of the Coordinators and simply make Kira a talented member of some group responsible for killing Flay's dad, then tell the story of how she uses him as her instrument of vengeance before growing as a person and confronting the fact Kira is a person too? Sounds like a fantastic set-up with which you could do some very entertaining, very messed-up stuff.
That, however, essentially brings us back to my one big idea for improving SEED which is this: rip it up and start again.

who are your top 5 favorite actors/actresses?
Oo good question!
Actresses:
Kathy Bates — has killed every single role shes ever done. Can do comedy and drama with the same level of dedication and expertise that puts her at the top of my list.
Marilyn Monroe — talented beyond belief! Unparalleled comedic timing, and still had the chops to do serious films. Amazing and phenomenal.
Katherine Hepburn — perfected the art of acting that even influenced Sir Anthony Hopkins. Plus her clothes were amazing. But man, she could act.
Octavia Spencer — I believe her character, no matter what, I believe it. Ive never once said "man, they shouldn't have casted Olivia Spencer." She's so good!
Michelle Yeoh — ever since I saw her in Memoirs of A Geisha when I was a kid, I knew she was great. And then I learned that she did stunts??? Amazing. I love when actresses are also stunt people, it's amazing.
Honorable mentions: Lucy Liu, Vicky Krieps, Renée Zellweger, Judy Garland, Mae West and many many many many more
Actors:
Anthony Hopkins — the way he is just so freaking natural no matter what role he plays is absolutely enchanting. He's simply being. It's incredible. He's not trying, he is. And I love it.
Michael Caine — He was the perfect Ebenezer Scrooge in The Muppets Christmas Carol, no one else should try. Plus his other bodies of work are impressive as heck.
Boris Karloff — he was the actor who played Frankenstein's Monster in the original Frankenstein in the 1930s. He made a bunch of other old horror films back then that are really fun!
James Cromwell — you should see him in L.A. Confidential. He's great in anything he's in, but that one movie is especially great.
Daniel Day-Lewis — this guy can freaking act. From classics like My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and The Age of Innocence to newer films like The Phantom Thread, he is absolutely captivating in all his work. Grated, he's a method actor, but when the product is something of this quality, I can allow it.
My brain is broken and I cant list any honorable mentions for the men, but I'm sure there are more out there bahaha

In the last few months, I’ve been going through some shit. A lot of existential questions, a lot of uncertainty, and a lot of sadness. In spite of this, I have a few beautiful lights in my world and this man is one of them. Since being introduced to his music and his soul last year, I’ve become such a huge fan. But, I’ve also grown to love him as a person and for the contents of his character. Sascha is kind, sweet, intelligent, warm, funny, incredibly tender, so utterly loving, and talented beyond belief. He is the embodiment of not just a good man, but a good human. He always takes time to like my insta comments and even slid into my stories once! His music taste is top tier, as is his own musical compositions. Between Palast and Helloween, this man has written several masterpieces. Yet, he remains incredibly humble and grateful for the following he has gained. He’s taught me inadvertently about being kinder to animals, philosophy on life, and wisdom for rising above the doubters. I will never understand why he was ever bullied or mistreated when he was younger. His unique beauty both inside and out are a treasure in this world of darkness and disingenuousness. I only hope in the years to come that he remains true to himself and he never forgets how special he is. 46, and he doesn’t even look a day over 35. I am so happy that he’s a part of my life and one of my role models. Hopefully, I can tell him that to his face one day.
To the moon, to the stars, Happy Birthday Sascha.

Raw (Final Rose x MHA)
Tenko - the girl who had once been Lightning Farron - watched her classmates from Class 1-A. They were all talented in their own ways, some more than others. Yet beyond their different quirks and differing levels of experience, there was one thing they all shared.
They were raw, like gemstones that had been freshly pulled from the earth. They had yet to be cut and polished.
It was hard to blame them.
For all that heroes were commonplace in this new life of hers, there were no Grimm. The monsters at their door were human, just like them, and they wanted to rule or reform civilisation, not annihilate it. What were the schemes of All For One or the various supremacist groups compared to the reality-breaking wrath of JENOVA or the civilisation-killing fury of Calamity Class Grimm?
Heroes might die in combat here, but it was rare, and they were not dragged down beneath tides of inhuman claws and fangs. They were not sent out to fight unnumbered hordes whose sole purpose was destruction. They did not live in the shadow of civilisation after civilisation that had tried and failed to fight off the Grimm.
Hunters had their own styles. Some were flashier than others. But at their core, all successful hunters fought with a ruthless pragmatism born of the simple truth of their profession: failure meant death. A hunter’s fighting style could be tempered for sparring or restrained for dealing with threats non-lethally, but it would always be a style meant for killing, a method for inflicting maximum damage with minimum effort.
All Might was one of Tenko’s friends, and she trusted the man with her life. But he was not a killer despite the awesome power her wielded. Oh, he could kill with ease, but his was not a killer’s heart. In many ways, he reminded her of Snow who had always been a kinder, gentler man than his imposing appearance would suggest. But Snow had been a killer, same as she had been, same as Fang had been, same as Caius had been... same as all other hunters had been.
Snow could smile and joke around with the kids... and he could pulverise a van full of terrorists with a single punch without so much as blinking. She’d seen him take a call from Serah, smiling into his scroll to Claire and the twins while his giant rampaged through the White Fang, leaving dozens of them reduced to little more than bloody paste with each footstep.
Heroes in this world were, with rare exceptions, not killers. And perhaps that was for the best. Perhaps this world didn’t need people like hunters. But just in case it did, Tenko was going to show them what it was like to face a killer, someone who could and would take advantage of every mistake and who could kill them the moment they dropped their guard, overextended, or lapsed in their technique.
After all, there were few killers as deadly as Saviour, and none who approached death in such a clinical, scientific manner.
Tenko was well known for the impressive way she fought. It was a concession she’d made years ago at Nezu’s behest. All Might could kill almost anyone with a single blow, yet the way he fought and the control he demonstrated meant that people weren’t afraid of him.
So rather than fight like a killer robot, Tenko fought more extravagantly, her moves calculated to put civilians at ease and to disable villains without killing them or maiming them. But Saviour was always there watching and waiting, ready for a return to Tenko’s true fighting style.
Contrary to common belief, Tenko was not necessarily an offensive fighter. It was easy to think that since she usually ended fights quickly, but the truth was different. As a fighter, there was no one who could predict opponents the way Tenko could. Coupled with her incredible speed and agility, it was almost trivially easy to anticipate what an opponent would do and then counter it before they’d even finished doing it.
It was why she usually advanced straight at her opponents. It wasn’t arrogance. it was a way to force a response - a response she could predict and then counter to end the fight before it had even really begun. As Vanille had once put it, the scariest thing in the world was to have a bearer of Saviour walking toward you. You didn’t know what you were going to do, but they did, and they would make you pay for it.
Of course, anticipating an opponent’s moves would have mattered little if she couldn’t hit hard enough for it to matter. But Tenko could hit hard... very hard. Even without using Saviour, Aura enhancement alone meant she could reduce every single one of her classmates to bloody mist if she struck them with a full-strength attack. All Might, of course, could stand up to a full-strength Aura-enhanced blow, but there were very, very few people in the world who could get anywhere close to his durability.
In short, Tenko’s style was based on overwhelming speed and power guided by unmatched predictive ability. In almost every serious fight she’d been in, she had won with a single blow launched to perfectly counter what the opponent was doing. Of course, that got boring and would possibly lead to her stagnation, so she regularly put limits on herself constraining how fast she could move, how hard she could hit, and so on. It made sure she continued to push herself and to gain experience in a variety of situations.
A spar against her classmates was exactly such an opportunity. They would learn nothing if she simply crushed them in an instant, and Nezu would be quite... annoyed if she exploded any of them, to say nothing of how All Might would react.
Bakugo was good. He always had been. Sure, he’d been born with talent, but he’d worked his ass off too. And what was that saying again? A genius who works hard can’t be beaten. Damn straight. Lazing off wasn’t going to let him reach the same level as All Might, so he had to fucking give it everything he had every time he trained. Anything less and he was just holding himself back.
It was why he hated sparring sessions at UA. Most of his classmates were losers. They were either scared to fight him or unwilling to go all out. The fire and ice idiot might have been a good training partner, but he had his head so far up his own ass. Not using his fire because of daddy issues? Please. If he wanted to prove his dad wrong, then he should just use his fire... and use it better than his dad ever did! Show his father that he was stronger, that he was the real hero. Fuck that brooding shit.
But now he was up against maybe the one person in the class he truly respected.
Everybody knew who Tenko was. She was the rat’s special project, the teacher’s aide with enough experience already that All Might actually gave a damn about what she said. And those eyes of hers... yeah. Those were some good fucking eyes. She might put on a good show for the cameras, never hurting villains too badly and playing by the rules, but Bakugo wasn’t stupid. Those weren’t the eyes of some goody two shoes. That was a storm in human form, and he was dying to know what she could do.
“Finally going to mix with the plebs, huh?” Bakugo smirked. “Rules?”
Tenko glanced at All Might. He nodded. “By all means, use your quirk.” She shrugged. “It won’t matter.”
He bared his teeth. “Don’t fucking underestimate me!”
“I’m not.” Tenko’s smile was almost gentle. “But what hope does a candle have against the ocean?”
“Fuck you!”
Izuku stared.
Kacchan was losing. And it wasn’t even close.
It didn’t matter how he used his explosions, Tenko seemed to exactly how to move to avoid them or negate their impact. She wove through the blasts, closing the gap and landing short, sharp blows. If she had put her quirk into even one of them, he knew Kacchan would have either been knocked out or severely injured. Instead, she kept her blows just hard enough to hurt and bruise, but never hard enough to do serious damage.
“Pay close attention,” All Might murmured, eyes intent on the battle. “This battle is for you as much as young Bakugo.”
“For me?”
All Might smiled. “You did not start learning and training in earnest until recently. You have not had time to develop a complex and advanced fighting style.”
Izuku nodded. It was true. His fighting style was... rudimentary and relied heavily on the overwhelming speed and strength his newly acquired quirk could give him.
“I know how you feel. You must feel... inadequate, perhaps even ashamed when you see the flashier, more developed fighting styles of your peers.”
Izuku bit his lip. The words hit close to home.
All Might’s smile widened. “Which is why you must pay close attention! Tenko is known for her ability to defeat opponents in an aesthetically pleasing manner, but this... this is her true fighting style. It is a style based on an unshakeable foundation, one that has absorbed the best techniques of all other styles and has discarded what is ineffective, keeping only what works. Its simplicity is magnificent, and its effectiveness unquestionable.”
Izuku’s eyes widened. All Might was right. Despite driving Kacchan back, despite dodging all of his blasts, despite landing blow after blow, Tenko’s movements weren’t anything Izuku wasn’t already physically capable of. Crisp, compact punches and kicks. Perfectly executed holds and throws. It was beautiful in its simplicity, breathtaking in its efficiency.
“But how...?” Izuku asked. “How can she fight like that.” And then the answer came to him. “She sees it... she sees what Kacchan is going to do and is already reacting before he can finish doing it. But I...”
He couldn’t do that... could he? But One for All made him fast... could it make him fast enough to see what someone was doing and still have time to react? It could! If only he could master it more. And all of his studying, all of his learning... what if he studied the way the human body moved, what if he learned to see tells and giveaways to predict what people were doing?
All Might chuckled. “You understand then?”
“How far does she see?” Izuku whispered. Kacchan was still fighting, but he was losing more and more badly with each exchange. This wasn’t a contest... it was... it was like Tenko was trying to teach him what he was doing wrong while beating him at the same time. Already, Izuku could see Kacchan changing what he did, tightening up his defences, honing his attacks, all because his mistakes were being pointed out with every hit Tenko landed.
“Everything,” All Might replied.
Bakugo stared at the sky. He’d been beaten. He’d given it everything he had, and he’d lost. No. He’d been crushed. It was like looking up and realising that he hadn’t been trying to climb a hill. No. He’d been trying to climb a fucking mountain.
He should have been angry, but he wasn’t.
Instead, a smile crossed his lips. He’d improved. Just from that one fight, he’d gotten better. Tenko, that bastard, had been pointing out his flaws the whole time. It had taken him half of the fucking fight to realise, but now that he thought about it, she’d been doing it right from the start.
What kind of monster was she?
Heh. Well, if she wanted to help him get stronger, he wasn’t going to complain. And one day, he’d wipe that fucking smile off her face. He’d force her to take him seriously. He’d get strong enough to see what she could really do.
“Tenko,” he said, using her name because she deserved that respect. “What’s your schedule?”

Author’s Notes
The only way to get Bakugo to respect you is to kick his ass. Tenko can do that all day.
Also, All Might knows more about Tenko than anyone else at UA except Nezu. He might have spoken with her a lot about Midoriya. With the enhanced speed and reflexes One for All gives, Midoriya could potentially develop a fighting style that shares similarities with Tenko’s. Of course, without Saviour, he won’t be able to completely predict things the way she can, but it will be far better than simply wading in and throwing down the way Midoriya tends to do in canon.
Don’t worry about the other students. Tenko has plans for them as well.
Next stop...? Who knows. Maybe Momo because Fraise had a similar Semblance and was a billion times deadlier with it. Or maybe Shoto. Two emotional hedgehogs enter a ring. Only one emerges victorious. Or maybe Fumikage. Dark Shadow can’t be any worse than Sigrid’s murder hobo Saviour.

the conundrum of a liberal arts degree
Go ahead. Press play on the song I've included above. I promise it's not a mistake. I have included a recording of New Zealand baritone, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, singing the infamous Toreador song from Bizet's Carmen for your listening pleasure and to be the background music for the following blog post.
This is hopefully the first of many weekly Monday posts, my ADHD willing. I have returned to my 2014 One Direction obsessed roots and have come crawling back to the blogging platform of Tumblr to express my thoughts. Mostly because Twitter stresses me out and I have already scared away too many of my Instagram followers.
So why did you choose to make your readers (hopefully there are more of you than just my Mom) listen to opera as they read your chaotic and unorganized thoughts, Maryn? I'll tell you. I graduated with my bachelors degree in music where I focused my studies on opera and musical theatre performance. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I'm fairly good at what I do and was recognized for my hard work throughout my time as a liberal arts college student. I can sing in four languages, tap dance, analyze 18th century music, and explain to you how Wagnerian opera changed the world and the entertainment industry as we know it. So why the opera? Simply to be pretentious if we're being honest but mostly because I have to have a soundtrack to everything I do and that will now extend to me forcing my readers to live their lives as I do, fully believing that they are the main character and that Bizet orchestrated their lives.
As I laid out in the previous paragraph, I know what I'm talking about and was considered a respected student and performer among my community. Once I graduated I got an incredible performing job (which I still have. It's great, HOWEVER most performing jobs are not full time and do not offer benefits and are not stable. But that could just be on me for wanting to tap dance for a living.) but found myself working a 9 to 5 customer service job to pay the bills. I was terrible at it.
I had visions of working as a florist and being with plants all day (how main character of me) so I took a customer service job in a flower shop. I really loved the people I worked with and it was not a terrible job, but one thing I had failed to realize was that 90% of the work in the floral industry is working in funerals. Customer service for funeral work is not for the faint of heart and ESPECIALLY not for highly sensitive people like myself. I had to make a change when I found myself having to take a walk around the block sobbing my mascara into a dark pool on my cheeks that prompted a rather large and gruff-looking man to yell at me across the street "You okay? You're beautiful, don't let life get you down!"
I was frustrated with myself. I was once one of the most respected lyrical sopranos in my area and here I was, reduced to tears by some woman furious beyond belief over a single Gerber daisy. I voiced my feelings to my friends who are also in the same boat that I'm in, incredibly talented individuals working mundane jobs to pay for their performing careers that may or may not take off. I couldn't help but think of the astonishing vocalists and performers I work with and interact with on the daily and how they are teachers, engineers, and secretaries among many other things. Why do we spend so much of our time honing our craft only to barely use it because it isn't financially lucrative? How do you represent creative people on paper when what we do is emotional and lasts a fleeting two and half hours?
Creative people are problem solvers, empaths, and good at so much more than just singing and dancing, but the problem is we are confined to an 8.5x11 piece of paper that tells indeed.com that we are qualified for jack squat. So that is why I have revived my dormant tumblr blog. To find a creative way to represent myself on paper. (Or in this case, a shoddy html code that I taught myself how to create in high school.) I have a complicated and eccentric personality that takes many a while to get to know and appreciate. Hopefully a weekly post is going to expedite that process. XOXO, future employers. I promise I'm really funny and will find a point to this blog soon.
As we say in the opera world, Toi toi toi!

Hi,
A few years ago I was in a bad relationship with someone who treated me terribly. I was at my lowest and depressed and anxious beyond belief. I couldn't bring myself to leave. I once asked you for psychic advice and you told me you saw a trunk with photos. I won't go into full detail, but I hope you remember it. Anyways, just wanted to say thank you. You told me what I needed to hear and quite frankly, already what I already knew. I did eventually leave him and now I'm engaged to the most amazing man. I think about that a lot and wish I could find your words buried in my ancient tumblr. I hope you're still sharing your visions because you have such an incredible talent.
My love, I read this a while ago when you sent it! I am so happy to hear that you felt the calling to make such a difficult decision and that, in the end, it was the best thing you could have done for you. We don't always get to see the big picture as we are just too close to the surface of our own lives. And it warms my heart that the reading helped you on top of it all. Congratulations on your engagement!
