Don’t Come Home a Stranger
pairing: carol danvers x reader
words: 1.5k
summary: carol comes home after being paged by fury to find out what happened on earth, and you tell her it’s time to meet the avengers.
It all happened so fast; the snap. Almost everyone in your apartment building was gone, the city seemed to be on fire for days, and then it was just dark. The few friends you had heard from had grim things to report. The dark sky was hanging low over New York City, and you were watching people scrounge for whatever was left of the bodegas. Only three days went by before you heard a knock at your door, and it almost made you jump out of your skin. You had forgotten what it was like - human interaction. Who the hell could it be? But before you could tear your eyes away from the scene unfolding outside of your window, Carol let herself in. She was praying that you’d be on the other side of that door, and thankfully, you were.
Carol spoke just above a whisper as she came to stand next to you, “What the fuck happened?” You could only shake your head, you had no answers. The power was out across the world, your phone was minutes from dying, you only knew that people were turning into ash as their loved ones looked on. “Fury paged me, I knew it had to be bad but this looks worse than anything I’ve ever seen.” You leaned on her shoulder, and took in the full weight of what she had said. Carol knew the Avengers, but they didn’t know her. She also knew that if Fury had paged her it meant that they had finally met their match.
“It might be time to go introduce yourself, baby.” You lifted your head and looked at her, you could tell she had flown here faster than usual because her suit had all kinds of burn marks from entering the atmosphere. As always, Carol’s hair still had its signature spunk and blonde wisps framed her beautiful face. With a small, sad smile she wrapped her arms around you and all you could do was bury your face in her chest. Carol always had this smell to her that you called “outerspace perfume”, you laughed for the first time in days when that thought came to mind.
She smiled when you finally lifted your head again, and gave you a quick peck on your forehead before she walked off to take a seat on the couch. Letting out a sigh, she scratched her forehead and mumbled something like, “Time to teach the avengers how to kick some real ass.”

“Where is Fury?” Carol stood tall behind the Avengers, they all whipped around like someone had shot at them. You, however, were sitting at the table behind this little meetup to watch how it all went down. The leather chairs surrounding the glass table were more comfortable than your own bed, so you sunk right down. Most of their faces were familiar from all the news of what they had been up to the past couple of years, but you could see how much this has taken a toll on them. They all looked like they needed a hug. Carol had remembered where the new compound was because Fury updated her every time they moved around, you simply grabbed onto her when she flew off your balcony.
“Who the hell are you?!” The man you recognized as Captain America was taken aback by Carol, he looked at her suit and he seemed to relax his shoulders a little bit. “How do you know Fury?” You remained in one of the chairs far off from the scene that was unfolding, you knew they wouldn’t fight with her but would be curious who she was and how the two of you got in there.
“I’m Carol Danvers, the one who Fury was trying to reach.” She pointed at the symbol on her chest, “The screen probably looked like this?” They all were wary of her, rightfully so. She had just flown down from the sky and landed in their safe zone.
Black Widow took a cautious step toward her, “Why are you here? We lost.” Natasha’s eyes were fierce, and you didn’t catch yourself tilting your head while watching the interaction. Powerful women meeting other powerful women was always a mystery to you, they tend to  act like they had nothing left to lose. But not Carol, she walked back towards you and sat down in a chair next to yours. They all eyed her with caution, but gathered around the table as well.
“I am here to find a solution to this problem, maybe even reverse it.”
-
Once the Avengers had heard Carol out, they convened without the two of you in the room and decided it wouldn’t hurt to try adding a new member to the crew. Carol went over her credentials in a blase manner, but most of them had their mouths hanging open when she talked about her powers coming from the tesseract. The amount of times she had already stopped disasters from happening to the entire galaxy single handed had all of them shocked. You had a smile on your face, that’s why you loved her, she wanted to help but didn’t understand how much she had really done to help people all over the galaxy. Carol had slowly worked her hand into yours over the time she had been talking, and rubbed her thumb over the top of your hand.
“And who’s this with you?” The question made your head snap up, and it had come from Captain America.
A red blush came over your cheeks as you introduced yourself, followed by “Captain Marvel’s girlfriend.” A few nods from around the table, despite society being where it’s at, the two of you still got some weird looks while out in public. But the Avengers all seemed to take it in like it was nothing out of the ordinary, which was refreshing. “I’m human, and I don’t have any special tricks up my sleeve.” A small laugh from around the table, the tension was eased slightly.
“Is there any way she could stay here while we figure things out?” Carol furrowed her brows as she looked at Tony Stark. It was one of the few places on earth with power still, mostly because they ran on an independent grid and also because it’s the avengers. “She can also offer counseling services, which I know you guys might benefit from..” Carol squeezed your hand under the table, and you nodded in agreement. Before either of you could continue on, they all started to speak from around the room about how it would be no problem for you to stay there.
-
A few weeks had passed, Natasha had found Clint and brought him home to help deal with the damage. There was a plan in the works and it looked like every hand needed to be on deck. The avengers were looking to kick up some serious dust. You were invited to the meetings where they discussed the overall action plan. So for a couple of the meetings you went, but things were starting to get quite dicey. Holding onto Carol’s hand and thinking positive thoughts were the only way through those meetings.
The night before they were leaving had finally rolled around, and after a big dinner with the whole team you found yourself in bed with Carol. The two of you chit chatted about who you were most friendly with, and who could probably beat Carol in combat (none of them). Once you shut the lights off in your room, you crawled back under the sheets and got as close as you could to Carol. This was the first time you had ever been truly worried about her safety, unlike her small missions to other parts of the galaxy where she knew she was top dog. Wordless, the two of you shared worries about the mission ahead. It seemed like a fool's errand; going back up against Thanos. But you knew that this was the only way to get everyone’s loved ones back, not just on earth either.
Legs tangled with Carol’s, her hand was making lazy circles on your lower back. Sometimes you thought she had sparks coming out of her fingertips, which is possible, but her touch just had a way of soothing your soul while getting your heart racing at the same time. You just wished that the two of you could be in a happy bubble away from trouble just a little while longer. After a while you finally looked up to meet Carol’s eyes, peering into your own. “Don’t come home a stranger.” You spoke just above a whisper. You’d seen her come home from missions before devastated and unable to get out of bed over all the people she couldn’t save. After placing a few feather-light kisses on her cheeks, you whispered, “By that I mean don’t come home so sad you can’t do karaoke.”
Carol let out a bubbly laugh, and pulled you closer to her, “Never, baby.”
