hi, your art is REALLY good. Id like to know, what program do you draw on and what brushes do you use?
i mostly use Sai2, but at times i goof around with csp if i want fancy lineart, animate or use gradient maps
here are the setup for my main brushies^^
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i also use lineart2 for shading, some of them have specific textures so just dm me and i'll hand you the files no prob👍

no way, fellow sai user! i'm the only person i know that still uses sai, so it's super cool to see an artist i've followed the work of for eons using it too :] truly nothing else feels quite like it.. even sai2 doesn't play nice with the textures of my favorite brushes so i've stuck to the original!
I've been pretty much hooked on it since I first got it all those years ago! I never even tried 2 since I was just so content with the first one.
It sadly doesn't have everything I need in an art program and has no app, so sometimes it's hard to recommend it to others because you basically have to combine it with other programs and that's inefficient. But so far nothing else feels the same as far as the line art so I stick with it 🙃

They're besties your honor ❤️
Quick doodle I did while waiting for Cyberpunk's 2077 2.0 update to drop (which is has by now so yay!)
Did this is CSP which I am not used to for art (have only used it for effect brushes) but I gotta say I really do like the textured pen for inking. Still prefer SAI2 though.

Hi :) just wanted to drop in to say I really love your art, the way you use lineart and colour are like, insanely beautiful. I'm curious what brushes you use for lineart? Hope you have a nice day!
Hello! Thank you very much, I'm super happy to have such a positive response to my art ^^💜💜💜 Talking brushes: I mostly use a default pen with a fuzzy texture, the exact type is not that important, it cam be noise or a spray tex. of sort) Now what I feel has a more profound effect is the exact proportions of pressure, sharpness and density. Here the preferred setting I use in SAI2:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll try to break it down a little so it's not just useful for SAI2 users, for I do not know the ins and outs of how other programs approach this. I set to to have round tip with no sharpness, and both minimal density and density amp set to 0, which results in it corresponding directly to pen pressure. The additional size and density scrollers set quite low too. That, together with high stabilization and low tablet sensitivity (smt you can do in your tablet settings, you can play with them too!) makes the brush rly easy to control for both opacity and thickness. Which is what I personally prefer (it gives a soft pencil feel I think) You'd need to set your density settings higher if you prefer a more opaque lineart brush. I do advice playing with them yourself to get the feel for it, it's honestly very useful to understand and develop intuition for. Now another "tool" I absolutely cannot live without is this pesky lil boi:
Tumblr media
The "switch to transparent" tool is like, A Beast, and I don't see a lot of talk about it's versatility. I set it to my hot keys and use it more that undo tool :D To elaborale: I find it helpful to use the negative space (or erase) the lines I draw in a particular way to give them a more unique value that it would have by itself. I'll try to demonstrate:
Tumblr media
So, the gist of the technique comes down to subtractive shaping of form, in combination to usual additive approach. Now, this is a specific trick I find rly satisfying to my style of drawing that works well with my brush preferences, which is by no mean universal, but what I would encourage to take away from this if you're not doing it already is to think of erasing as not just a corrective tool, but also an artistic one! (Note: switching to eraser does similar thing- the only downside is your brush settings and texture would have to match with it, which can be a hustle) I hope this isn't too elaborate of a response, and hope it is at least somewhat helpful X3!! Good drawing you Ya'll and first of all: have fun! Have a nice day~

I MADE BRUSHES!!!! You can get them on my ko-fi! The watercolor set has been the one I've been using for MONTHS now, I love it! It was made from my actual dabbles with watercolor, so 100% made by me \o/

Hello, where could I find the straight line feature in SAI2 that you mentioned in your latest post about art programs? And what do you use it for? Love your art btw.
ello ello n thank ye
uuuu its this
Tumblr media
when drawing or painting in SAI i use it all the time..lately the most in my screenshot redraws.. i like sharp angles
Tumblr media
the line can go thick or thin and all the blending/texture/oppacity of the brush work with it too.. photoshop and csp have similar features, but they dont work in a way id like....

Haiii me again what brushes do you use for lineart or uhh how do you do those textures thingies i can never get those to work
i use a variety of brushes but my main ones are these three!
Tumblr media
you can download the first pen here and the third pen here. i dont remember where the second brush came from (as in, i dont remember if i made it or if i tinkered around with the settings, so i dont want to re-upload it just in case). all three brushes are similar to the blots brush in sai2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you want a brush that's even MORE textured and dry, alex's ink is good. you can download them here and here. i used those brushes for this scene:
Tumblr media
as for the paper textures, the quickest way to get that 'vintage' or 'old' effect is by using paper textures and black&white grunge textures. multiply the paper layer and use screen for the grunge layer. you can also play around with the blending and level settings to get various effects.
Tumblr media
there are grunge brushes available if you want more control over it (and to decrease file size), this one is good and this one is good too.
and lastly...for the halftones, there are three auto actions i use. first one is kemo's auto action. i used it for some of the sprites. you can download it here.
for the second one (and the one i use the most), unfortunately, i dont remember where i found the download for it. if it helps, it was called separations and i want to say i found it on a forum thread.
Tumblr media
the best way to do halftones, without using brushes, is on photoshop. i used this tutorial to create my photoshop auto action.
there's also various of halftone brushes available if you want to have control of your dots. links here, here, here, and here (this one comes with an auto action AND brushes).
i only use clip studio paint nowadays, so i don't know what the equivalents would be in other art programs. if you're looking for something outside of clip studio paint, try looking up brushes that are described as 'textured', 'rough', 'dry', 'grunge', 'blotty', 'runny', 'blotchy', 'gritty', 'noise', 'charcoal', 'sumi-e', 'ink wash', etc.

hello i love ur work sm i was wondering what brushes do you use?
TYSM!! :DD i mostly use a wide range of SAI2's default brushes, but i DO have a customized lineart brush that i use:
Tumblr media
i keep very light pressure when using it because the texture doesn't really show up otherwise. the larger the size of the brush, the more grainy the texture (which i like) so i like to keep a good middle-size, usually around 2-4 for small details but 9 for main lines. i also generally work with S-3 to S-6 stabilizer levels
Tumblr media
i hope this helps!! if you're wondering about any other specific brush just lmk, though again i mostly use SAI2's default brushes (marker and watercolor specifically)

Brush anon here! I apologise for bothering you again! What are your favourite brushes for sketching and shading?
Hey again and no worries! I actually like talking about my art process and tools I just never get the chance to! I use many different brushes that I've gathered throughout the years but these below are my go to most used brushes. They are all used for Paint tool Sai2 but im sure they could be recreated to some degree in other programs as well. Hope these help!
My most used brushes
bee
Tumblr media
This is my go to brush for sketching, its soft and buildable. Works great for thinner confident lines but can be used to block out proportions too. I sometimes use it for lining too. Works similar to a regular pencil.
2. YOO
Tumblr media
I use this brush for sketching as well but not as often, mainly used for cleaner looking sketches. Also buildable. Works similar to a ballpoint pen.
3. larvae
Tumblr media
This one is my everything, my absolute favourite, I use this brush to shade almost everything. One side has a softer finish than the other which makes it great for getting interesting textures in your art. The brush has no blend, instead I use it by colourpicking a mixed shade from the softer side of the brush and laying more colours on top that way. So its kind of like colouring with crayons but with a brush shape.
4. aura
Tumblr media
I use this brush to soften/blend the edges of whatever I'm drawing. Can be used to softly sketch smaller details with blending turned off.
5. huh?
Tumblr media
This is just a regular round brush. I use it mostly for gradients, silky shading and when laying out base shadows. Requires some blending for the best results.

I love your RW art month tiles. What art program do you use and how do you get those really clean textures and shapes?
I use PaintToolSai, both 1 and 2- but most of the drawing gets done in SAI1 since I couldn't get my brushes to import right for 2. Its an extremely bare bones program all things considered (Sai2 less so, it has a bit more tool-wise, but I only draw in it if i *have* too or for minor stuff) so its nothing really fancy being employed, everything geometric I do just by using a self made grid to measure out shapes like you would a piece of paper.
Literally its just a measured out grid of like... 50 by 50 px squares with cross sections? I just paste it as needed and draw the lines around it and since the measurements are consistent it just works.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my default pen is already "crunchy" so being perfectly matched isnt a huge deal, and you can general paste and rotate to make it look a little cleaner. Honestly I've used this same grid for forever (and it was off by like one pixel at one point lol) its just really useful for quick matching things for a program that doesn't have stuff built in for lining things up As for the textures, those are all default to SAI (I think?). The brush I use lightly uses of fabri (which mostly just makes the edges of the brush grainier) and then I usually also put some various level of a layer texture overlay thats just one of SAI's default 'watercolor' textures. It mostly just adds a little bit of a noise/grain effect. Heres that on max
Tumblr media
For ArtMonth itself I just draw out a tile canvas using the grid with all the layers broken up- then I just reuse it over and over as needed. There's probably smarter ways to do it, but eh it works
Tumblr media
And yeah, theres just two borders. One for the bottom and one for the top, makes it easy to make something that goes 'in and out' of the tiles without having to think to much. Just snip as needed

the real basic review of art programs for sprite making (my opinion )
so tha main programs i use for art are KRITA, FIREALPACA, and PAINT TOOL SAI. im still tryin to figure out sai2. they all have pros and cons but this will specifically be abt how they handle ALIASED LINES!! aka "pixel" brushes, aka not anti-aliasing.
EACH PROGRAMS BUILT IN BASIC PIXEL BRUSH:
Tumblr media
Krita has a few, but focusing on Pixel Art and Pixel Art Fill Firealpaca has Dot Tool (can be 1-3 pixels big) and the basic Pen brush with AA turned off PTSai has Binary Pen (or Legacy Pen)
---
PTSai easily has the smoothest binary pen out of these when the algorithm setting is on accurate!! unfortunately the pen has barely any settings compared to other brush types in PTSai.
Tumblr media
and when using pixel textures in regular brushes, unless theres a setting im missing, they still act like AA brushes and dont colour evenly.
Tumblr media
Otherwise PTSai has a really easy compact UI and easy clipping layers
Tumblr media
so its good for basic pixelly art without using fancy brushes.
---
FIREALPACA Dot Tool is kinda rough, and when the aliased regular brush is too small then the lines break up and leave gaps. but at bigger sizes its pretty smooth. and a lot of firealpacas brushes can be pixel-ized in a single click!!!!
Tumblr media
when this box is unticked then most brushes will no longer anti-alias and will become pixelly!! (the following images are zoomed to 200% to better see the effects)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
while the effect shows on basically all brushes, not all are strictly pixelly and still have anti-aliasing pixels on the edges.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but still! a lot of the brushes do become truly pixel brushes, and brushes like the Edge Brush can be really useful for making sprites.
also Firealpaca has easy clipping layers too.
Tumblr media
---
KRITA Pixel Art brush is pretty smooth, and Pixel Art Fill is probably smoother for ppl with more steady hands lol. and while its ui is a Lot More complicated than the prev two programs (usually requiring a few more steps to do similar things), it has A SHITTON OF BRUSH SETTINGS!! and in those brush settings is the Sharpness setting, which can be used to achieve a similar effect to Firealpacas' Anti-Aliasing box being unticked.
Tumblr media
but in my experience it can basically guarantee pixel-ized brushes!!! OBSERVE (again, images are zoomed to 200% to better see the effects):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(there might be a way to have sharpness up but still keep the fish texture. im not sure yet)
this also means pixel texture brushes can apply evenly too
Tumblr media
but alas. clipping is a bit more annoying to do in Krita. u gotta rightclick on a layer then select Group > Quick Clipping Group for the easiest clipping layer (maybe theres a better way but idk it yet.)
Tumblr media
---
ok this is more of a comparison rather than a review. but still. i personally prefer Firealpaca for spriting homestuck style sprites, it just feels tha most natural for me
