“From 55 miles away another of last week's atomic explosions looks like a gigantic, blindingly brilliant candle standing on distant Frenchman Flat. The photograph was made from an 8,000-foot mountain range a few seconds after the bomb was detonated. The stem from the 'candle' is composed of vaporized incandescent dirt and rubble which is just beginning to be sucked up into the fireball. As rubble and fireball rise together they will form a mushroom cloud containing hundreds of tons of debris.
