Thinking about how I could possibly make a temeraire fur suit.

I was thinking that a full suit would be ideal but the sudden thought of a partial suit with early 19th century clothing it actually super neat as well.

Book Boyfriends Tournament - Round 1a

Hey y'all. I got bored and decided that I wanted to try something, and we have polls on Tumblr now, so I am doing a little bracket for book boyfriends. (If this goes well we can do book girlfriends later.) I could be more specific about the rules, but I'm leaning into my chaos energy, so...just vote! This will be Mondays for a while now, and how this works is that the main post will have the bracket and brief explanations of who everyone is. Then, the actual polls themselves will be in reblogs (I'm sorry if this is cumbersome, I'm literally trying to work out how to not have this take over a year and I can't put multiple polls in a single post). Heyo! I'm HyacinthQuetzal! I’m lookin at heading to art college within the next few months or a year, and a general fine-arts artistic hobbyist, and I've been drawing now for a bout six or seven years; pretty much ever since I could remember! I’m proudly self-taught, and only in the last two years have I moved to digital art to try that out and see how it goes. I first started drawing on a foldable Chromebook with my finger whilst using the Adobe Draw software. Yeah— that didn’t last long, as I was wise to the fact that Ibis Paint was free, so I drew on that for quite a while afterward. Then an amazing thing happened— My parents gifted me with a stylus and an iPad to go with it along with procreate, so now I'm on a roll and doing rather well with digital artistry! I also sculpt occasionally; usually focusing on my own characters to greater improve my knowledge of anatomy, and perhaps, how they might look in the real world! I’m an avid Transformers fan, as well as enjoying all kinds of science-fiction media! I’m also a fan of various cosplaying and nerd culture! I love art in many different forms, and I’m aiming to become a creature concept artist, and perhaps a paleontologist in my off time if schedule allows! I also love literature, (is there a word spoken greater than the short concept of love?) and I’ve also written by own books as well! I won’t be posting any of my art or literature here, (a single exclusion being made at the bottom of this post,) —just browsing and enjoying my favorite medias of different fandoms made by many wonderful, talented people. Ok my historical costuming friends, I have a question for you! I’m considering doing a Temeraire cosplay, but I think this would be useful for fic too. We know that Jane Roland wears stays because Laurence packs them for her in HMD, but do we think she wears stays under her uniform or only in dresses? If not stays, some other kind of undergarment maybe?

More context on historical period and this series under the cut for people who might be interested but haven’t read the books.

The Temeraire series is a historical fantasy series that takes place during the Napoleonic Wars. In the books, the Aerial Corps is a fictional branch of the military that rides dragons. Their officer’s uniforms are described as being fairly similar to naval uniforms except in color and additional outerwear layers for flying. Women are members of the Corps, but this is a secret and gendered attitudes and fashion are otherwise of their period outside the Corps. It is unclear (in my memory) how women’s uniforms vary from men’s, if at all, except that they’re similar enough for the younger women to be mistaken for men.

1. if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?

Read Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere, especially Stormlight Archive. Also read Uprooted, the Earthsea Cycle, and LOTR. Watch How to Train Your Dragon and Pride and Prejudice, and probably the Piper short from before Finding Dory. Listen to? forbidden friendship, if you could hie to kolob, so will i (hillsong), high hopes (p!atd), up&up (coldplay), and the whole Kaladin album while we’re at it

4. do you like your name? is there another name you think would fit you better?

I do like it! It’s a bit of a pain to get people to spell it or pronounce it but it’s unique. And with the rise in fictional characters with similar names (Rey, Rayla) I have a) cosplay ideas and b) a way to get people to remember my name.

My mom would always shorten it to Ray/Rey for food orders and that bothered me a lot, until star wars came out and Rey existed. I can’t think of any names that might fit me other than my own? I’m just so used to associated it with, well, with me.

15. five most influential books over your lifetime

Oh dear. I’m going to go with influential to my life over favorites, here.

1. My high school bio book? that might be weird but that’s the thing that got me into genetics. (Honorable mention: The Gene: An Intimate History, for turning curiosity into obsession)

2. The Lord of the Rings. My brother forced convinced me to read Narnia and I did but was still skeptical about fantasy until he forced convincedme to read LOTR and i haven’t stopped reading since.

3. Cosmere. Mistborn: the Final Empire gets a mention here for being the first Sanderson book I read and it got me hooked. The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, and Oathbringer (Stormlgiht Archive 1-3) have introduced me to such amazing characters who struggle like I do. Also? The Ideals from Stormlight Archive have helped me realize where I’m trying to go with this being human thing.

4. The Earthsea Cycle, for the commentary on self. A Wizard of Earthsea blew my mind when I first read it. The relationship with your mistakes.... so good. Tehanu is amazing. The Other Wind is everything dragons that I ever wanted. Also I love Ged, so.......

5. Uprooted. This one is debatable about being influential? maybe? but I think it still holds #1 for my favorite book. This is the book I’ve gone to for comfort reading ever since it came out. Honorable mention to the Temeraire series for getting me MORE addicted to books.

More honorable mentions: Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom and A Wrinkle in Time.

BOOKS!

1. Sleep. As much of it as I can get.

2. School. Yay college!

3. Homework, usually. Time kinda stops existing for me when I do hw so I end up never knowing how long it actually takes.

4. Working.

5. Screwing around. This is usually tumblr, other internet stuff, or playing violin or flute. Or researching random stuff. Anything that’s separate from school.

couple months ago when i reread the first temeraire book and levitas died. my poor baby deserved so much better than rankin

no longer in school but the 3 months i went to high school were at an absurdly tiny charter school. it was so small they couldnt support a concert/marching band or an orchestra so the two music classes offered were classical guitar and "rock band" which was essentially a free and in-school version of the School Of Rock summer camps. we learned like fifteen songs and how to set up and do live mixes and at the end of the semester we did three shows (one for the middle schoolers during school hours, one for the high schoolers during school hours, and one after school) and i blew out a microphone and gave a whole horde of middle school kids a sexuality crisis by being Visibly Queer and also cool af

Regardless of any drama, I still love Temeraire! It will always hold a special place in (some of) our hearts.

I do too! I’ve loved the books ever since I first found His Majesty’s Dragon as a kid. The drama just made me want to leave the fandom.

Might even draw some more fanart soon, and I still want to cosplay Roland one day.
