while you definitely enjoyed dressing up for events, the events themselves almost always turned out to be boring.
and the event you had attended with jamie tonight was one of the many boring events you daydreamed through, thinking only of your pyjamas and a thai takeaway when you went home.
unfortunately you were pulled from your wistful daydream by the feeling of jamie's hand on your leg
you had zoned out during a speech being given by the organiser of the event you were currently suffering through.
you turned your attention towards him, a soft smile instinctively taking form on your lips at the sight of jamie.
his responding smile just made your stomach flutter.
" wanna grab some drinks ?" he suggested, and you were glad that you weren't the only one who was clearly bored. it was especially clear since both of your drinks were over half way full.
" absolutely " you replied almost instantly, grabbing your clutch and standing from your chair, jamies hand resting softly on the small of your back as the two of you made your way to the bar at the back of the venue.
you ordered yourself another one of the same drink that was sat on the table, but you would much rather nurse it at the bar than down it at the table and listen to the dud stood on the stage rambling about stocks.
you leant against the bar with a sigh, hearing a soft chuckle come from jamie at your reaction.
" is this really worth it ? 3 hours of this for a couple hundred quid in a bond we don't know how to use ?" you joked, taking your drink the moment it was set down in front of you and taking a swig.
" definitely not " he replied, thanking the bartender and taking a sip of his beer .
you turned your attention towards the front of the venue for a moment when there was a small round of applause, some other boring guy coming onto the stage to continue waffling on about stocks.
you were pulled from the boredom by the feeling of a pair of hands on your waist, causing your entire face to light up.
it lit up even further when you felt jamie's arms wrap around you and his face pressed into the crook of your neck.
" while that bloke was chattin' all i could think about was gettin' you home, gettin' ya out of this dress, and ordering takeaway "
your hands lifted to rest onto of his, practically wrapping yourself around his arms and tilting your head back against his chest.
" that sounds amazing... how long until we can duck out ?" you questioned, knowing he had a bit of a responsibility to be here. you didnt want to get him in trouble because you were bored.
" well, i'm thinking, this guy will be done in two minutes and we can slip out when everyone runs to the bar for refill's " he suggested, causing you to let out a soft laugh.
" perfect " was your simple reply.
the two of you remained stood at the bar, jamie's arms wrapped around your torso while the speech continued for what seemed like forever, but was probably only another 4 minutes.
the minute that everyone started coming towards the bar, the two of you headed for the exit, avoiding many glances your way as you climbed into the passenger seat of jamie's car.
the moment he dropped into his seat, his hand fell to rest on your thigh as he drove away from the venue and towards his house.
when you got in, you both began undressing almost instantly, both in your underwear when you got to his bedroom.
jamie laid on the bed while you stood infront of his mirror, removing your makeup.
" you want pad thai, babe ?" he questioned
" and vegetable spring rolls " you added, tossing your dirty cotton pad into the trash and joining him on the bed, your head resting on his shoulder.
" twenty five minutes " he stated, setting his phone down on the bed next to him, moving his arm to wrap around your shoulders with his head now rested against yours.
" mint " you added, settling into the brief silence between the two of you.
both of your fingers seemed to move on their own accord, jamie dancing down your side, yours drawing mindless shapes on his chest and watching as it rose and fell with every breath he took.
the ring of the doorbell was the thing that broke you both from your moment.

When the whistle was blown for full time, the cheers in the arena were deafening. You couldn’t hear yourself think and everything seemed to slow. You stood behind Roy, clutching your camera, as you watched the sea of red and blue storm the field. You were only snapped out of your thoughts when Will jumped on your back, hugging you from behind.
“We’re moving up!” Will screamed behind you, beaming from ear to ear. “Come on, Y/N, let’s celebrate!”
You placed your camera on one of the seats under the tent and tossed a jacket over it. You followed Will into the middle of the field where all of the coaches, players, and fans were celebrating.
“Dani Rojas you legend!” You yelled, running toward Dani. He grinned at you, picking you up by your waist to spin you around. “I am so fucking proud of you!”
“Thank you, Y/N,” he put you down, holding you by your shoulders. “You will come to the after-party, yes?”
“Wouldn’t miss it.”
You made your rounds with all of the players. Most of them were so excited, they couldn’t say anything but, “Let’s goooooo!” Colin threw an arm around you and walked you over to Sam, who you still hadn't seen because of the chaos. When Sam saw you, he ran to you, smiling so wide you were sure his cheeks hurt.
“Y/N! Can you believe it? We are back in the Premier League!”
“I believe it. I knew you guys could do it.”
“Thank you, Y/N,” he hugged you tightly. “Are you coming to the after-party? Please tell me you will. I can pick you up.”
You tutted, “Samuel, I will be there but you are not driving tonight. You deserve to get absolutely trashed.”
“Agreed, mate.”
There was that accent again. You turned around to see Jamie, glowing under the lights. Ever since the day he cornered you in the hallway, he made do with his promise. He didn’t bother you again unless it was for work. You’ve been more courteous to him. You no longer ignored his “good mornings,” or “how are ya’s,” but you still kept your distance. However, your resolve was slowly fading. Being around him again made you remember why you were so drawn to him in the first place. With him being a different version of himself now, it increased that attraction tenfold.
Sam looked between the two of you and smirked, walking away discreetly. He’s noticed the small smiles on your face whenever Jamie would come around. You tried to hide it, but Sam knew you too well.
You turned your body to look at Jamie, shyly looking at him. Jamie met your eye, eyes twinkling in a way that you haven’t seen since the last night you shared with him. He had a boyish smile on his face. You pursed your lips, trying not to let a smile slip, but you were unsuccessful. Jamie’s eyes got brighter, which you didn’t realize was possible.
“Great job, Jam.”
Jamie let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding at the sound of his nickname leaving your lips. He bit his bottom lip, stretching his hand out for a handshake, “I appreciate it, Y/N.”
You rolled your eyes and smacked his hand away. You walked toward him and pulled him into a hug. Jamie froze in your arms for a second before melting into the hug and burying his face in the crook of your neck. You didn’t realize how much you missed him until you felt his arms tighten around your torso. It was like you finally got a taste of the thing you were craving for months as if there was nothing else in the world that could’ve made this moment sweeter, better.
Your hand made its way to the back of his neck, where you cradled the back of his head, fingers softly tugging on his hair. It was muscle memory, how you used to cuddle him on his couch all those months ago. Jamie sighed into your skin, his warm breath awakening you from the trance you were under, causing you to pull away.
Both of your faces were flushed when you pulled apart. Jamie cleared his throat, looking down at his feet, before vaguely motioning somewhere as if there was something requiring his attention. You did the same, leaving to go in the opposite direction as him.
You turned around and saw Keeley with a smirk on her face, arms crossed with a knowing look. “World must be ending, I suppose?”
Blushing, you shoved her lightly, “Shut up.”
In true Captain fashion, Isaac rented a giant party bus for all of the players and a few special guests, including you, Keeley, Roy, and Will. The bus was taking all of you to a club in London that Isaac bought out for the night to celebrate the win and promotion. Roy, who should know better now that he was a coach, denounced his coach-ship before he stepped foot on the bus, stating that tonight he was “going to have the fucking time of my life!”
When you walked into the bus with Sam, you were hit with the sound of a club beat. Players were already a few drinks in from the bottles of beer and liquor scattered around the bus. Jan Maas was holding onto the pole, laughing as he fist-pumped to the song. Richard had a bottle of red wine in his grasp, which you later saw had a sticker on it that said “Property of Richard Montlaur.” Colin and Isaac were in the corner singing into a bottle of gin when “Hotel Room Service” by Pitbull started playing.
Sam was pulled from you by O’Brien who made him take shots. With you both being the last two the team was waiting for, the bus lightly jerked as it began its journey to London. The entire team cheered, raising bottles in the air.
You laughed as you tried to make your way around the bus, trying to find a friendly face that wasn’t too far gone. You knew all of them would regret this in the morning. You turned to your right and found Jamie and Dani sharing a bottle of tequila, laughing at something that you’d later learn was not that funny.
“Y/N!” Dani yelled when he saw you. He scooted over on the leather bench, leaving a space next to Jamie for you to occupy. “You are here!”
“I am!” You replied, shaking your head at how far gone the boys already are and you’ve barely even left Nelson Road. “How you guys feelin’?”
“Fuckin’ fantastic,” Jamie replied, taking another sip from the bottle. He handed it to you, which you took. You drank some and grimaced when the strong taste hit your tongue.
The two boys laughed as you passed the bottle to Dani. Dani stood up, holding onto the pole that Jan Maas was holding earlier, and began to make his rounds in the bus. He kept offering the bottle to anyone he saw. You couldn’t help but laugh at how they all took the bottle from Dani, despite not liking tequila.
“‘M glad you’re here.”
Your attention focused back on Jamie, who was staring up at you. His eyes were clouded, eyelids droopy. You playfully punched his shoulder, “How are you already drunk?”
Jamie furrowed his eyebrows, “You and Sam were so late. We had to get started without you lot.”
“We were thirty minutes late.”
“A lot can happen in thirty minutes.”
You snorted. It made Jamie smile. He bumped your knee with his. You looked at where your bodies touched. Your breath got stuck in your throat. You swallowed, “I guess I need to catch up.”
“Damn right,” a lopsided smirk graced his lips. He dug behind him in the ice bucket and pulled out a bottle of Clase Azul. He handed it to you, “Go on then.”
“Menace,” you replied, grabbing the bottle from him. Your fingers brushed, sending shocks throughout your entire body. “You know I can’t say no to good tequila.”
“Yeah, that’s why I bought it,” he shrugged, opening a beer. “I bought it for you. Nearly broke Bumbercatch’s arm when he tried to open it earlier.”
“Jamie, this is an expensive bottle of tequila.”
“Yeah well, Coach wouldn’t let me buy the whole team PS5s as a sorry, but he didn’t say anything about buyin’ you expensive liquor.”
You were sure that Jamie was only saying this because the alcohol was clouding his better judgment. He probably won’t remember this in the morning, or at the very least, he’d wonder whether or not this was real life or just something his mind made up. You opened the bottle and took a long swig from it.
As good as the tequila was, you still grimaced, frantically searching to find a chaser. Jamie, who remembered your drinking habits, held out a cup of Diet Coke. You downed the entire cup, sighing in relief when the taste of tequila was masked by the sugary drink. “Thanks, Jam.”
“Missed you callin’ me that,” he admitted, a look of longing on his face. “Missed you in general, to be honest. Been hell without you in my life.”
“Jamie,” you started, turning your body to him. “You’re drunk so I suggest you stop talking.”
“Am I makin’ you uncomfortable?” Jamie asked, concern on his face. He sobered for a moment, blinking back as if he was trying to figure out what he just said.
“No, no,” you assured him, placing a hand on his thigh. He tensed under your touch, letting out a shaky breath. You were really close to each other now. “You’re not making me uncomfortable. I just don’t want you to say anythin’ you’ll regret in the morning.”
“Don’t think that’ll happen,” he said, nonchalantly. He took a sip from his beer, trying not to move too much in fear that you would remove your hand from his thigh if he did. Hesitantly, he started drawing figure eights with his pointer finger on your hand that was touching him. He let out a breath when you didn’t pull away. “Been regrettin’ not saying anything to ya. Should’ve told you how I felt that night. Or any night after that, really. I was just bein’ a prick ‘cause I was hurt that Richmond let me go.”
You stayed silent. You didn’t know what to make of his words. Was he talking about the night you told him how you felt? Surely not. What does he mean by tell you how he felt?
Jamie continued, “And the thing was, I knew Richmond had no say in whether or not I was goin’ back to Man City, but it still hurt, I guess. Woke up to a text sayin’ I had to go back to Man City from my agent. Not even a text from Ted, or Keeley, or you. Thought I didn’t mean nothin’ to any of ya, so I just shut everyone out.”
“And it’s real shit of me to do, ain’t it? Especially how I treated ya. I don’t blame you for not forgiving me or giving me a second chance.” He stopped drawing on your hand. He drank from his beer again. You looked at him. He had a small and nervous smile on his face. Testing his luck, he brought a hand up to touch your face. “Shame I fucked it all up really ‘cause you’re the only person I ever actually wanted to spend the rest of my life with.”
“Jamie–”
“Come on, party animals!” Isaac yelled from the front of the bus. Somehow the top five buttons of his shirt became undone during the drive. He slung an arm around Will, who had a tie wrapped around the circumference of his head, “Let’s get iiiiiittttttt!”
The bus erupted in hollers as players trickled out of the bus. Sam, who was giggly under the influence, found you next to Jamie. Jamie, seeing that Sam was there to walk you out of the bus, waved goodbye to you and caught up with Bumbercatch. You held the Clase Azul bottle close to your body as you threw on a fake smile, walking off the bus with Sam.

ok but the “i was 99% sure you would be supportive, but the 1% chance that you wouldn’t be, scared the shit out of me” scene was so relatable.
you can have the most supportive family and friends in the world, and there’s still this teeny tiny part of you that lives with this crippling fear that the people who are supposed to love you unconditionally, aren’t going to be okay with who you are and it’s fucking terrifying.
i want every single person who has ever said “there’s no reason for people to be afraid to come out, it’s 2023″ to watch that scene because it does not matter how accepting the people surrounding you are or how far society has come. it’s not about them, it’s about how that tiny little voice in the back of your head is the loudest thing in the entire world when you’re afraid to lose people you care about over it.
thank you to the writers of ted lasso, because that scene made me feel so fucking seen.

jamie tartt | if somebody hurts you, i wanna fight
MASTERLIST | TAGLIST
words: 2.2k
warnings: 18+
domestic abuse, violence, trauma, the aftermath of an abusive relationship in which jamie finds out your boyfriend, his teammate, is abusing you. takes place when he's playing for manchester city.
prompt: Hey there! I would love to send a prompt request in for Jamie tartt:) number 29, I don’t know why but to me it fits him well! Nothing specific, thank you! 🥰
Tumblr media
Jamie sees the bruises and knows. He’s never had a good feeling about your relationship with Tom, his teammate, but you’ve ignored his warnings despite being friends since childhood.
And now you’re hiding bruises. Anger flares in him, and it’s an effort not to reach out as you get up from the couch to grab popcorn, the staple of any movie night. He thought it strange you turned up on his doorstep after months of barely seeing you, but now he thinks he understands. Your T-shirt rode up for only a moment at your hip before you tugged it down, but he saw the purple welt. His jaw ticks as he listens to you shuffle about, but he can only wait so long. Fingers flexing at his side, he heads in to hear popcorn popping in the microwave.
“Do you want a beer?” you ask, oblivious. When he doesn’t reply, your brows furrow and you look up from the kitchen counter. “What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Has he been hurting you?” he questions steadily.
“What?” You’re a terrible actor, but you try nonetheless, eyes widening in feigned confusion.
Jamie takes a deep breath. “Don’t lie to me. I saw the bruises just now. There’s only reason why you wouldn’t tell me about them.”
It makes him sick as he realises the truth of those words; you’d hide it because you know Jamie would react badly, perhaps even sacrificing his spot on the team. Tom’s more popular with the fans, Man City’s star player. If Jamie confronted him… He knew it would be game over. That’s why you’d kept your distance.
And yet he still wanted to. He was already imagining it, shoving Tom against the lockers and beating him the way he’d beaten you. He’d teach him a lesson; nobody would ever hurt you again.
He wouldn’t let them.
You pale, tugging at the hem of your shirt again self-consciously. “I fell.”
Jamie shakes his head, barely even listening now. Lost to his fury. “I’ll teach that wanker a lesson. I’ll fucking kill ‘im. I knew he was trouble. I knew he was no fucking good for you—”
“Jamie, please.” You grab his arm, eyes flooding with tears as you look at him. It’s enough for him to halt, still glaring. “Don’t. Please. I’m handling it.”
“Are you still with ‘im?”
You hesitate at that, a look of shame darkening your features.
“Then you’re not fucking handling it,” he snaps.
“He won’t let me leave,” you whisper, chin wobbling. “I tried. That’s why he… I tried.”
His shoulders heaved with a sigh, but he softened, sympathy swirling in his eyes. “I can help you, love. You should have told me. You used to tell me everythin’.”
Tears slip down your cheeks as he cups your jaw, catching them.
“Hey,” he breathes gently. “It’s okay. You’re safe ‘ere. You know that, don’t you?”
A nod. He pulls you into his chest, and you wrap your arms around him, shuddering as it all comes spilling out. “I’m sorry. I thought he loved me. The first time… He was drunk. I thought he was just drunk. But then he kept… I’m just sorry.”
“No need to apologise, babe.” He plants a kiss in your hair. The microwave dings, the last remaining kernels popping behind the glass, but neither of you move to get it. “It’s not your fault. It’s never your fault.” He closes his eyes, pain searing through him. He can’t bare to think of you hurting like this. He should have realised sooner. Should have known. “How long’s it been going on?”
“A couple of months.”
Too long, then. It’s always going to be too long. “Stay ‘ere with me, yeah?” he asks. “He won’t get to you ‘ere.”
“I don’t want you involved in this—”
“You’re my best fucking friend, and I’m not letting him do this to you again. Never.” He pulls away and forces you to meet his gaze. “He won’t fuckin’ touch you again.”
“I’m begging you. Don’t confront him. Don’t do anything to risk your career. Please. Please promise me.”
His nostrils flare, but he nods. It isn’t quite a promise, though — not one he’s willing to keep, at least.
***
He does his best. He survives practices with the fucker all week while you hide away in his house, rarely getting out of your pyjamas. He has to force you to eat most nights, though you always have a home-cooked meal on the table. He can’t enjoy them, too busy wondering if it’s a forced habit — if maybe you were punished if you didn’t have dinner waiting for Tom.
And then Tom struts into the locker room before a Sunday match in Man City’s home stadium, his gaze already narrowed on Jamie. Wordlessly, he nudges past the other players, and the hair on the back of Jamie’s back prickles as he stops lacing his boot to look up at him.
“I bet you think you’re a right hero, eh?” Tom sneers. “Hiding her away from me. What’d she tell you?”
Jamie’s knuckles whiten, entire body tensing, but then he thinks of his promise to you. “You dunno what you’re talking about, mate,” he replies stiffly, drawing his lace tight.
Tom scoffs. “I know you’re the first person she’d run to.”
This time, Jamie bites, standing up to match his eye level and squaring his shoulders. “And you hate that, don’t you? It must make your fuckin' blood boil. Does it make you feel good, being an abusive twat, or are you that far gone that you don’t care either way?”
Tom slams Jamie’s locker shut, the picture of aggression. Jamie thinks of you facing him, alone in his big old house where no one is there to step in. He thinks of the way you must have flinched at that scorn, and resolves not to on your behalf. He might be breaking one promise, but he’ll keep another: Tom’ll never touch you again.
“You gonna beat me up as well?” he asks, and that anger he’d been suppressing so well is bubbling now; he’s a volcano ready to erupt.
“Oi!” The team manager steps in, drawing everyone’s attention. “We’ve got a job to do today. Whatever the issue is, you save it ‘til later. Am I clear?”
Jamie doesn’t back down, his eyes flaring with dangerous defiance. Tom is the first to nod,  but not before offering a smarmy smirk — as though he’s won. “Yes, boss.”
“Jamie?”
“Yeah,” Jamie mutters finally — for you, he thinks. Anything for you.
*
It doesn’t stop there, though. Tom carries his bitterness onto the pitch, ignoring Jamie through the game so that he’s never passed the ball, never able to score. He’s tackled him more than a few times as though they’re on different teams, and Jamie knows then that he can’t play this game anymore. He won’t. He’ll quit on Monday, find another club to sign him. Maybe even grovel to Ted and go back to Richmond. Anything to get you both out of this.
He tries to be the bigger man, but he’s never been any good at it, so when Tom trips him in another fight for the ball, Jamie can’t do it anymore. His vision blurs into angry red lines as he stands, shins throbbing from the fall, and fists Tom’s sweaty shirt in his hands.
“Someone needs to put you in your fucking place,” he spits, and when Tom only grins again, he launches. His fist meets Tom’s hard jaw, and pain flashes through Jamie’s knuckles. Tom sniffs, spits, and the crowd in the stadium falls quiet enough to hear a pin drop. And then Tom lunges back, and Jamie feels the blow through every bone in his body.
It doesn’t stop him from punching him again. “See how you fuckin’ like it!” he’s screaming, again and again and again, all scrambling limbs and fierce hits between them. His knuckles and mouth turn bloody, and so do Tom's. Finally, they’re yanked away from one another.
Even as Jamie is pulled off the pitch, he’s bellowing across the field: “You’re nothing, you! A piece of fucking shit!”
“And who are you?” Tom calls. “Her knight in shining armour? You’re useless. You’re nobody!”
Jamie’s heard that more than a few times now. He no longer sees Tom’s face, but his own father’s. That’s why he couldn’t let this go, he realises. He could never stand up to his own bully, so he’s stood up to yours instead.
Spitting blood from his mouth, he leaves the pitch — knowing it might be for the last time. Knowing that if it is, it was worth it.
*
You saw it all on TV, and you’ve been waiting for the door to swing open ever since. Finally, it does — and you don’t even know what to say. Jamie’s mouth is swollen and his nose bloody, and you want to shout at him for being so stupid, for doing the one thing you asked him not to — in front of everyone. But in the end, you can only sigh, wiping the tears from your eyes.
“I know I fucked it up,” he rasps. “Maybe I should be sorry, but'm not. He fuckin’ deserved it.”
“And what about your job?” you ask, crossing your arms over your chest. You still wear your pyjamas, too afraid to go home and get fresh clothes. Too depressed to even try.
Jamie shrugs, throwing down his bag. “Don’t know yet. Doesn’t matter. I’m not playing on the same team as a dickhead like that.”
“But where will you play now?” Panic rises in you as you think about this means. You’ve never known Jamie without football, and to imagine him losing it now, because of you… It’s almost worse than what Tom did to you, maybe because you care more about your best friend than you ever could yourself. It’s wrong, but it’s true.
“I dunno. It doesn’t matter.” He sniffs, and you sigh, softening as you move towards him to examine his injuries.
Without a word, you head into the kitchen to wrap some ice in a towel. He follows slowly, sluggishly, as though he has no fight left in him. He used it all on the pitch. A stadium of fucking people. God, you’re angry. With Tom, with Jamie, with everyone. You shove the ice pack into his chest, blood pumping in your ears.
“It fucking matters,” you snap. “This is your life. I asked you not to ruin it because of me—”
“My life was ruined the minute you started dating that fucking prick!” he shouts.
You frown, confused. “What?” Your voice trembles.
Jamie purses his lip, shaking his head as he presses the ice to his bruised jaw. “Forget it. I did what I needed to. It wasn’t just for you, either. You’re not the only one who’s been bullied before. I’m sick of pushing it aside. Sick of 'em getting away with it. I can’t fight back for myself, but I can at least do it for you.”
You understand then. His dad. Tears sting your eyes.  “Jamie…” You make to reach out, but he draws back as though your touch is venom. It hurts. You stumble back, feeling heavy and wrong. This is your fault. All of it.
“I shouldn’t have come to you. I shouldn’t have put you in this position," you say.
“Stop it. I told you it isn’t your fault.”
“It is.” You close your eyes, cheeks growing damp.
“Babe…” He’s there in a heartbeat, cupping your face with bloody hands. “Don’t. Please, don’t. Just look at me a minute.”
You do.
“I don’t give a shit about what this means for me. I don’t care if I’m never signed again. I only care that you’re safe. The dick was taunting me, and everyone will see that, but either way… you’re what matters. Nothin’ else.”
You can’t speak, your throat thick with emotion.
“I know you didn’t tell me because you knew this would happen, but I need you to understand that it’s happened because I love you. Because I always have and I always will. And if somebody hurts you, I’m not letting them get away with it.
“I shouldn’t have lost my temper like that. I know that. I don’t wanna be like ‘im, I don’t want you to see me like that. But I wasn’t going to let him keep doing it. Not to me or to you.”
You hate it. Of course you do. But you love him, and you know that if the roles were reversed, you’d choose him over anything. You know that this wasn’t an act of violence, but of love and pent-up anger.
“You’re not like him,” you say gently. “You could never be like him.”
He kisses your forehead, and your eyes flutter shut again as you lean into him.
“You’re worth it,” he whispers. “You’re worth all of it. I just wish I could’ve been there for you sooner.”
You tuck yourself into his chest as he squeezes you tightly, smelling of grass and sweat and dirt. You haven’t felt safe in a long time. You haven’t felt loved in a long time, either. “You’re here now,” you say.
He nods, chin brushing the crown of your head. “‘S gonna be okay now. I’ve got you.”
You finally believe him.

"Keeley..." You singsong as you walk up to where she and Rebecca are staking a claim in front of the bartender.
"What did you say to Roy?" You ask her as you lean your face toward hers, making an effort to keep your voice low seeing as the man in question is only on the other side of this relatively small restaurant.
"I'm not sure I know what you mean," Keeley replies with such a convincing tone of innocence that you’d almost believe her if it weren’t for the fact that Roy Kent was staring at you with such unabashed intensity that you felt like you might combust.
"He's...looking at me," You whisper-hiss in her direction. Causing both women to look over your shoulder to where Roy is sitting with Jamie Tartt, Jamie going on about something while Roy continues to stare in your direction.
“God, he really is intense, isn’t he?” Rebecca comments as she turns back to you, sipping her drink.
You purse your lips to keep yourself from snapping at your newfound friend.
You know this is amusing to Keeley and Rebecca, everything about your love life is amusing to these women, but you’re having a hard time laughing about it when everyone else knows just as much about your business as you do. And how it sometimes feels like they know stuff you don’t know.
“I need to know why all of that intensity is aimed in my direction, and Keeley’s my best bet,” You reply as you stare at your best friend expectantly.
“Nothing! I just encouraged him to explore the relationship- friendship between you two!” Keeley defends.
“Go say hi to your new friend,” She adds as she prods at your side.
You sigh but move to say hello to him anyway.
Jamie has disappeared off to somewhere else by the time you move to this side of the room.
"Hi... friend," You greet Roy as you come up to him with an awkward smile, your hand coming up in a half-wave, half-fist bump that just makes it look like you greet people by punching the air.
Cool.
"Right," Roy replies gruffly as he frowns down at you.
"This place is nice, I'm impressed," You comment as you glance around the space.
When Keeley had invited you and explained that one of the AFC Richmond players had started a restaurant you kind of expected it to be like most celebrity-owned establishments, completely detached from that person other than the use of their name to get people in the door. With little care for anything other than making money.
But you were pleasantly surprised, Sam clearly had a lot of oversight here as owner, he was helping deliver plates to people’s tables, checking in with the chef, and making the rounds to ensure everyone was having a good time.
Not to mention the fact that the food looked absolutely amazing.
Sam cared a lot about sharing his culture and food. And it showed.
"Maybe Sam should quit and become a full-time restaurateur,” You comment as the man in question sneaks around the two of you with two plates in his hands.
"Don't you fucking dare put that idea in his head," Roy replies. “The team needs him.”
"You'd figure it out,” You say with a wave of your hand. “Ted and Beard are both pretty smart guys," You add with a small smile.
"And you too, I guess," You add with a sigh, smiling at Roy as he takes your teasing remarkably well given your past.
"How have you been?" Roy asks you.
"Oh, um, good," You reply with a nod. “You?”
“Shit,” Roy replies.
“Oh… um…” You stammer as you glance at his expression nervously. Only to see him staring back at you as straight-faced as always but with a glimmer of something behind his eyes that has your short-lived anxiety quickly morphing into relief and amusement.
“You’re fucking with me, aren’t you?” You reply as you hit his upper arm with your palm.
“Yeah, glad you finally noticed,” Roy replies.
You smile up at him for a moment before a server with another platter of delicious-looking food walks past you.
“Watching all of this food come out is making me extremely jealous, do you want to order some food to share?” You ask as you gesture toward an open table in the corner.
“Yeah,” Roy replies.
As you move to sit down you miss the look that Roy and Keeley share.
Tumblr media
As it turns out, talking to Roy is easy.
You’d initially been a little worried that with your nervous energy and hatred of long pauses that trying to make conversation would be like pulling teeth, but once the two of you get going you can’t stop.
“What do you mean?!” You shout as Roy finishes telling you the story of how his ex-girlfriend stole his Rolex and sold it for drug money.
“I said what I said,” Roy replies.
You burst into laughter at the whole story.
“Uh oh,” You mutter as you see Sam out of the corner of your eye start to put chairs up on the tables.
And then you glance around to realize everyone else is gone except for Sam and his employees.
Keeley and Rebecca had bid you goodnight a little while ago but everyone else had still been here then.
“I think Sam is trying to very politely tells us to fuck off,” Roy replies as you pull your phone out of your bag to realize how late it’s gotten.
And get a glimpse at a series of texts from Keeley almost exclusively consisting of emojis including but not limited to the peach, eggplant, and explosion emojis.
“Do you want to go get a drink? There’s a pub down the road that makes good cocktails,” You ask Roy when you turn back to him.
“Yeah,” Roy replies as he moves to stand up.
“Thanks for tonight, Sam, this place is seriously amazing, it’s going to be a huge success, I can already tell,” You tell Sam with a smile as you and Roy make your way to the door.
“Good food,” Roy adds from beside you.
“Thank you so much for coming,” Sam replies with a grin. “And I hope you’ll stop in again soon.”
“Oh, we will,” You reply without even thinking about it before you head out with one last wave.
We. You said we. Putting you and Roy into a shared unit without even thinking about it.
And you didn’t hate it.
As your brain spirals Roy switches over the walk on your other side, his hand ghosting the small of your back as he places himself between you and the road. A move that you’ve only read about in books. Or heard about on TikTok from people who apparently have better boyfriends than you’ve ever had.
The spiral pops an embarrassing story of your own into your brain.
“I once had a boyfriend who was stealing money from my wallet and when I caught him he claimed it was a ‘boyfriend tax’,” You blurted out as you glanced over at Roy. Filling the silence with your rambling.
“Your terrible ex story reminded me,” You add.
Roy looks down at you and stops dead in his tracks as he turns to face you more completely. You stop walking too and take a step back to glance back at him.
“What was his name?” Roy asks.
“Br– wait, I’m not telling you that,” You stop yourself when you realize what he means. “I can’t let you go to jail for murder.”
“You don’t know that it was going to be murder,” Roy replies.
You laugh.
“C’mon,” You say as you loop your arm around Roy’s and pull him along to come with you. “Let’s go get that drink. Maybe I’ll tell you his name after I’ve had a few.”
Tumblr media
After the change in locations you’re ready for the mood to shift and for you to down a quick drink and bug out as whatever weird truce you and Roy have going on fizzles. But the conversation continues to flow even better as the two of you share a few more drinks.
Once it becomes truly too late that even the bar crowd is starting to think Roy offers to walk you home.
"Thanks for walking me home," You tell Roy when you reach the door to your flat. "I'd ask you to come in but it's probably way past your bedtime with practice tomorrow."
"Yeah," Roy replies.
"Tonight was fun, I'm glad we were able to break the ice," You say as you glance down at Roy’s lips. Waiting for him to look at you and do the same.
But his eyes don’t move from the top half of your face.
"Me too.”
"I guess I'll see you tomorrow- today technically," You add.
"Goodnight, (Y/N)," Roy says with a small smile.
"Goodnight," You reply.
And then Roy turns on his heels and walks down the hallway.
You watch him disappear down the staircase before you turn and shove your key into your door.
"Goodnight," You mutter to yourself as you push open your door. "What the fuck?!"

[id: two drawings of Trent Crimm from Ted Lasso. The first is him with a neutral expression, a blue dotted blazer, a purple and yellow college shirt, and a blue and white polka dot scarf. He is holding his notebook by his side.
The second is him sitting, one leg propped up, writing in his book. He is wearing a black t shirt with three dancing skeletons, and appears to be talking.] - plain-text description written by @one-true-houselight

You find out Roy’s in love with you when you open up TikTok and see a remix video of him shoving a microphone out of his face and saying the words “I fucking love her don’t I?”
It ends up trending on Twitter.
“Did you forget to mention something last night?” You ask him when he eventually drags himself out of bed. His unruly curls are jutting out in all directions and he’s wearing nothing but a pair of black boxer shorts that cling to him in all the right places.
It takes a minute for the question to filter through to his brain. He’d come to bed with a migraine last night and he’s still feeling the effects of it this morning. He puts a coffee pod in the Tassimo machine before the words finally hit him. He knows it’s a trick question because the last time you’d asked him…
He’d neglected to mention he’d head butted your ex at a Save the Polar Bears event.
“No?” He says, picking up the expresso he’s just made and wincing as he sips from it.
You push your phone across the table towards him and he frowns when he picks it up, his own voice blaring in his ears as he watches the remix.
I fucking love her don’t I? I fucking love her don’t I? I fucking love her don’t I?
He plays the evening back in his head. The appearance he’d had to make at  the sponsor event, stepping outside to take a breath because he could feel a migraine building in his temples, being assailed by what felt like a thousand flashes going off in his face.
There have been questions about your relationship ever since that picture ran in the paper, the one of you kissing him on the doorstep before you left for Ireland. It had been an absolutely filthy kiss, one that’s getting him hard just thinking about it. He remembers your hand running through his hair, grasping his curls before he’d tugged you back into the house and fucked you in the hallway.
“You know that’s the first time you’ve said it.” You say quietly as he pushes the phone back towards you.
“No.” He says, his palm rubbing over the back of his neck as he takes the seat across from you. “No I’ve said it…”
You give him a look and he realises…
Maybe he hasn’t.
But he’s certainly felt it, he has for a while now. His days, they’re brighter with you in it. He smiles more, laughs more, he swears more but that’s because you’re so fucking good at that thing you do with your tongue…
“Come here.” He says softly, patting his lap and you find yourself complying because you really can’t deny this man anything, not with his wild bedhead and unshaven cheeks.
His forehead comes to rest upon yours, his thumb chasing along the line of your jaw.
“I love you.” He whispers, his dark eyes locked on yours. “I fucking love you.”
