yuri and kitty make sense. it did not come out of nowhere. the rom com meet cute? all of the tension while yuri was “dating” dae and how easily that tension transfers to romantic tension after kitty’s dream? that doesn’t come out of nowhere. kitty and yuri in the beginning of the show are two people who are at odds but don’t really want to be at odds. once the dae situation is mostly resolved, they become fast friends, which it’s foreshadowed they can be in episode 1. moreover, kitty has been with dae since she was 12. she clearly has been focused on him and not herself, and her interest in yuri is allowed to flourish because she is not with dae when it begins. she does not think she will be with dae. and she is in fact actively looking for someone to kiss. moreover, even if it was out of nowhere (which it isn’t) kitty is 17 (16?). at that age, crushes appear out of nowhere all. the. time. and while it might not have been the best idea to tell yuri about her feelings, kitty thought she would never see her again. sometimes the right thing for you, the thing that will let you keep going, is going to hurt someone else. doesn’t make it okay, just is. and on top of that, she didn’t fully confess anyway. and kitty’s not known for making good decisions, since literally the first tatbilb movie. it’s up to yuri now to decide what to do with this information. she clearly has wanted juliana to come back, and it is unlikely she will drop juliana because of kitty’s aborted confession. additionally, the few times we’ve seen juliana have been 1) the flashback, 2) the kiss in the janitor’s closet (neither of which reveal much about her), 3) the phone call in the tent, 4) the phone call in kitty/yuri/q’s room, and 5) the scene at the airport. in 2 and 3, juliana seems to have resigned herself to a life without yuri, and seems honestly shocked that yuri cared enough to go to such lengths to find her. what does that say about what juliana thinks of the relationship that yuri is so invested in? in 4 and 5, 4 explicitly, juliana is worried about yuri’s friendship with kitty, and jealous of it, and pushes the fact that she doesn’t quite trust yuri’s telling her the truth about the platonic nature of their friendship. to be clear, i have absolutely nothing against juliana. i am interested and curious to see her as a full character in season 2, and i do, in fact, desperately hope that they do not villainize a black queer female character. on the other hand, black queer women can be toxic partners. limiting othered people to only heroic, savior-like, positive roles, is also not great. and exhibiting jealous and mistrusting behavior already when we have so few, brief scenes of her is to me an orange flag. i’m not worried about it yet, but i have noticed it. and often, people who imply that they don’t trust their partner not to cheat, have already cheated themselves. once again, i hope this is untrue, i hope i’m wrong. finally, kitty was not in the right to almost confess to yuri, but it is not the cardinal sin some people are pretending it is. yuri and juliana may continue, they may not. whatever happens, it won’t be kitty’s fault. it is not inherently homophobic if you don’t ship kittyuri, or if you ship minty. it is homophobic to perpetuate this idea that the ship came out of nowhere simply because you don’t ship it and have refused to see what the show is explicitly showing.

in this same vein, min ho and kitty make sense. it did not come out of nowhere. and while min ho might not have had the best timing with telling kitty his feelings, he did in fact wait until he had confirmation that she was no longer with dae. he might have said something further had the PA not interrupted, but he did not appear to expect anything from her in return after he told her (just as kitty did not appear to expect anything in return from yuri when she almost confessed). kitty is shocked, but very clearly not upset about the information. to us, it is clear that min ho has liked kitty for a while, probably longer than he knew or let on. sometimes so called “hatred” for someone is genuinely that, but as demonstrated in xo kitty, it is often the exact opposite. (i am of course talking about disliking someone interpersonally for muddled reasons, not disliking someone for genuine reasons, i.e. they’re a harmful person.) dislike for someone is often based on someone protecting themselves for whatever reason. based on all that we know about min ho, he has a lot of family related issues, and a lot of reason to put up walls in order to protect himself. he is initially “anti-kitty” because he thinks dae should explore his options with someone he is in the same country with and then because he thinks yuri is a better option. a lot of this quite clearly stems from the way he was raised, the fact that his father is on wife #3, and the classism that very much exists in korea (as it does in many places) and honestly probably because kitty is half-white (i am not saying there is racism against white people, there isn’t. i’m saying that there is often unfortunate biases against mixed kids from both/all of their communities). in the chuseok episode, he says “my parents thought they were true love, and then had the messiest divorce ever” (or something to that effect). that line is so telling: min ho doesn’t believe in true love, or maybe even love at all. he looks at it as transactional, what can i get from them and what can they get from me? it’s evident in his failed (i think?) tryst with the k pop star whose name is escaping me, and in his situationship with madison. but spending so much time around kitty specifically changes his mind about these things. slowly, at first, and then much more rapidly. he’s still cocky, arrogant min ho, but he chills out a lot over those first few episodes. i think he appreciates that kitty actually responds to his teasing and one ups him oftentimes. and when he calls her his saesang, it’s so funny bc he is so clearly the one obsessed with her at all times throughout season 1. also, the dream happens after the chuseok episode, where they noticeably get closer. there is buildup! he thinks she’s beautiful when she enters his party, and is actively trying to resist his crush on her (because he thinks he shouldn’t have a crush on his friend’s girlfriend) when he reacts to it being her. he respects that he thinks she and dae are still into each other and moves his attention to madison. he knows her order in the detention episode. he is upset for her when he finds out yuri and dae lied. he saves her from the fireworks. he does not fight back against dae after dae attacks him because he thinks dae has the right to. he looks visibly shattered when kitty says min ho isn’t the one she was talking about. also, min ho would not have made the effort to sweet talk some flight attendant to find kitty’s seat and sit in coach because of nothing.

with both kittyuri, and with minty, they are one sided crushes (at least at the moment) with potential to be reciprocated, and i think people are misinterpreting them because of that. neither of them came out of nowhere, neither of them are toxic, and neither of the two ships involving teenagers include characters who are morally bad.

in conclusion, let people ship things. ship things yourself! and most of all, do not take things that seriously. shipping should never be a war. even if you personally don’t like a ship, it is shitty to go and actively hate the ship, especially if the ship is not doing you any harm, especially if you go into the positive spaces for that ship to spread your hate. if you don’t ship something, do not interact with content for that ship. it is not that hard. it is 2023, not 2013. ship whatever the hell you want.

Thank you so much (and shout out to the anons who sent me links. I'm gonna respond to all of y'all collectively with this one).

Honestly, at first my jaw was on the floor and I was just sitting there silently in shock. And I was kinda mad and upset. I just feel like they did this same exact thing with TATBILB and I just don't understand why she would spend so much time writing the characters a certain way and building such a beautiful little world with such respectful men and then changing such a big part of a characters beliefs and the way they were written. I know people are saying "JH is making it more sex positive and bringing the story into 2023" but tbh I don't think having a boundary and wanting to wait for the right moment (bc Belly DOES want to have sex (with both brothers at different points I'd argue) and she thinks about it in the books. she just wanted it to be special and the right moment). I don't think there's anything wrong with showing that and showing boys who respect the boundary and don't push it or force it. I think that is the most healthy thing you could show. Even though Jere has his flaws and gets annoyed about Belly not having sex with him, he doesn't really push her on it, he just respects the boundary and is silently mad about it. In hs my best friend had a boyfriend who was SUPER pushy, she was honest with him and kept telling him "no, i'm not ready yet" and he just kept pushing her about it, and eventually they broke up and she realized how awful that behavior (among other red flag behavior from him) was. I just feel like the message being sent to young girls today is not a good one and I was actually kind of excited to see a show that would portray sex in a different light. I clowned myself because I thought since JH is the showrunner, she'd keep the important things from the books. But I guess this is a battle we are losing lol. That Christmas scene was so so good in the book, and the way Conrad is with Belly, how he recognizes the importance and wants it to be special for her...I was really looking forward to that.

After much consideration, I think I'm actually okay with it, as long as it's Conrad. And I have a feeling it is going to be Conrad, in Cousins in December. That's kind of the only way it would make sense is if it happens there. Also the fact that they bring up the fact that she loses her virginity immediately following "Tung...wanted to ensure that key moments from the second book...carried the same weight and resonance when adapted for the screen". The first thing that popped into my head after I read that was the Christmas in Cousins scene, because I felt like that whole thing resonated heavily in the book and it was really important. Also if I'm right and it is Conrad in Cousins, it actually adds more flames to the fire and more angst to the 3rd book storyline, because if she doesn't sleep with Jere but he finds out somehow that she did sleep with Conrad, and then finds out she ended up alone with him in Cousins again and didn't tell him? Oh that will be GOLD. Jere sleeping with the sorority sister could still carry the same amount weight. Just because the audience knows she lost her virginity to Conrad doesn't mean any of the other characters are going to know. And Conrad strikes me as a guy who wouldn't kiss and tell (and especially his own jealous little brother and Belly's older brother lol). I think they could 100% pull off the rest of the plot and still have her give herself fully to Conrad. But I can see the secret coming out to Jeremiah in the heat of an argument and all hell breaking loose. I think it'll be fine. It has to be lol

What I think (tbh, hope is the right word) is gonna happen in XO, Kitty S2:

◇SPOILERS below

◇ Biased towards my favorite ship, sorry ;)

• First of all, Kitty is obviously going back to KISS with Yuri's help;

• Dae will be back too, not sure if because they're going to excuse his 2nd place (it's way too stupid for a scholarship to demand 1st place every single time) or if they're gonna find out that Florian cheated/Florian will tell himself;

• Probably not the first option, or else the whole drama will be for nothing;

• Also, whatever happens, Florian will stay at KISS, even if there are new complications regarding his parents or the fact he cheated;

• I think Florian and Q are going to break up at some point, maybe Q will even have a new love interest, but will probably end up with Florian;

• Dae, too, will have a new love interest (most likely a "definite" one) and their main drama will be about him getting over his past with Kitty;

• On this topic, I really hope Dae and Kitty's friendship solidifies and that they're able to overcome the awkwardness of their break up;

• Now that Juliana is back, I think she's gonna share dorms with Kitty;

• Unless Yuri decides to stay at the dorms too, to be closer to Juliana, then she will be the one sharing dorms with Kitty (her mom won't allow her and Juliana sharing the same dorm);

• Juliana will notice how close Yuri and Kitty are (specially if they share a dorm), she's gonna get jealous and will break up with Yuri;

• Yuri will realize she has started to develop some feelings towards Kitty;

• Kitty and Yuri will notice their feelings for each other soon after;

• They're gonna date and we will have some very cute scenes but, in the end, they'll break up and realize they're better off as best friends, just as how their moms were;

• And part of the reason for the break up is because Yuri is still in love with Juliana, while Kitty, once again, fell for someone else;

• If it wasn't obvious before, I'm talking about Min Ho here;

• Taking off from the last episode, he and Kitty will kinda ignore his confession, not forget it completely, they'll just try to act normal and keep bantering with each other, but there's also gonna be somewhat of a tension between the two of them;

• Not sure if they're gonna show much of Kitty in the US before KISS, but, either way, I don't think they'll see each other during the winter break;

• So, as soon as they're all back to KISS, the awkwardness of the confession is still kind of lingering between Kitty and Min Ho, and Q is the first to notice ofc;

• Then it's Dae, and that will result on some drama between the two boys, with Q in the middle not knowing what to do;

• But it'll all work out at the end, and we'll be able to see more of the boys' friendship;

• Then, as times passes, Kitty and Min Ho get closer and closer, and she starts to fall in love with him too;

• But she just started dating Yuri, and she likes her, so Kitty does her best to act like nothing changed;

• Until the moment Yuri notices that Kitty and Min Ho's relationship dynamic has changed, and decide they have to break up;

• And they do, and there's a little bit more drama, but we end the season with Yuri and Juliana as a couple again (or working towards it), and Kitty and Min Ho realizing they relaly fell for each other;

• Which gives way to a third season, paralleling the three movies for TATBILB;

◇Some extra notes:

• I hope Jina divorces Yuri's father;

•Also, that she, Yuri, Alex and Prof Lee get closer, like a real family;

• We're going to found out more about Simon and, idk, maybe he's the reason why Eve Song always told her daughters not to go to college while dating someone?

• Also, maybe a quick appearance of Lara Jean and Peter, please

Anyways, let's see how much (if any) of it is going to actually happen :3

I’m actually worried about belly and Conrad endgame. Jenny was the only show runner in season 1 and they have a co show runner now. She likes a lot of belly jeremiah content on sm, she was also the person who wrote the finale episode.

anything could happen at this point, sure, but also i'm not so worried in this case. firstly, book girlies are jenny's priority and she herself said it several times. she's knows that the majority of fans are conrad girlies and the changes that were made in the show were in favor of conrad's character. up until that moment, and i believe it's going to continue in season three, conrad is being built up as the main love interest and there're so many hints that he's going to be endgame. i think the finale confirmed that for me even more because of the scene with the letters. we know for sure now that the letters are going to play out, so i'm not worried about the outcome here. also, please remember that jenny is a writer and she takes responsibility for her decisions. she took responsibility for making those specific choices when writing her books, so if some planet force makes her change endgames or the general outcome, it would be disrespectful to herself in the first place. and no writer does that. she didn't change the ending in tatbilb and i think she's not going to suddenly change it for tsitp. she knows what she's doing, so i don't want to worry about that.

I neeedddddd to know your predictions based off the trailer (of Benvi in particular, I really do care about other things in the show but I love them the most)

ooooh okay so.....not all of these predictions are actually serious some of them i just think would be FUN but i dont think they'll actually implement lmao. also....as usual i dont know when to shut the fuck up and stop typing SO. predictions under the cut!!

my prediction for benvi is: devi ghosts ben post-boinkening (basically confirmed; the trailer insinuates that they havent spoken since); ben goes after margot because she likes him (and we all saw how well it went the last time ben started dating someone else bc devi wasn't an option), it implodes, devi retaliates by dating ethan because he's hot or whatever the fuck (and honestly good for her im sure he's a tool but like.....rebound arm candy isnt necessarily a bad thing.....except in this case it is bc that is Also going to implode.) i think it would be HILARIOUS if margot and ethan ended up going out lmfao but. i doubt it. after both their rebounds fail (ben's i want to say around episode 2 bc i dont think they'll drag it out super long, and devi's probably episode 5?) they're still.....skirting around each other, in a will they/won't they kind of situation. i can see fab & eleanor trying to talk some sense into devi but devi just not listening bc she's stubborn as hell and of course she knows there's something there with ben but they've done this back-and-forth dance for so long that she's still nervous about taking that full leap.

and well. then she ends up getting like...accosted in new york (which im guessing the trailer may have been a bit misleading about that exact scenario because, ya know, it's a trailer) and ben tries to play knight in shining armor and well. we all saw what happened lmfao. cue devi icing ben's face n devi being like "why did you do that?" and ben just says "for you" or smthn cheesy as hell. this is probs around like? episode 7 i'd like to think? and they probably at least partially get their shit together but like. lbr it's ben and devi. so it can't be 100% smooth sailing. like you said im excpecing a tatbilb sort of thing - they agree to date & then break up before going to college. (we all know devi gets denied for early decision from princeton - this could play into her actually going to a school in new york - something prestigious, ofc, she graduates as valedictorian).

based on the trailer....im honestly torn on whether ben goes to prom or not! i know you said smthn about him perhaps going home and changing, but part of me also thinks - what if he didnt go at all? what if he stays home, because he knows this is gonna be one of his last good memories with devi and he just cant do it? i know we havent seen a lot of bts for season 4, but we have seen bts of maitreyi + lee + ramona in their prom dresses, and i dont recall jaren being there at all or wearing a suit (the only suit bts ive seen is of him in 2x10). so......maybe he doesnt go, but he comes to her after. idk exactly how that will play out but thats what im hoping for!!!

and of course, they end up going to the same school - thats been something ive been sure of since, well, forever lmao. i'm 100000% convinced that the last shot of the show is going to be devi coming up to ben in the library of their college or vice versa and if im wrong i will eat my mf words

as for other predictions....

i'm with you on thinking it might not be kamala's wedding anymore, but i'm still not sure who's wedding it would be - perhaps another family member? a family friend? who knows.

i think treleanor is going to break up, which is TRAGIC because they r everything to me <3 but i feel like they're the kind of couple to come back to each other after years apart so im holding out hope for them 🤞 in treleanor we trust u know !!!!

paxton's.....there. idk. he's there. devi probably like. goes after him or whatever in the midst of the ben/margot/ethan bullshit bc she doesnt want to be alone and shes like oh i finally like myself maybe i can have this since i can't have what i really want but ya know power dynamics due to him being sherman oaks staff or whatever so. im HOPING as the party with the upper hand in that scenario he turns her down or whatever. maybe she even waits until after this to go after ethan - make both ben and paxton jealous, kill two birds with one stone

XO, Kitty Season 1 TV Review

Yearning to feel closer to her late mother and surprise her long-distance boyfriend, Kitty sets her sights on attending a prestigious school in Seoul.

So I absolutely loved the To All The Boys I Loved Before film, whilst the books and other films were a mixture of good/average. I was interested to see how XO, Kitty would compare, although I didn’t think it would live up to my love for the first film, based on the fact that I always found Kitty a bit too annoying. Certainly there were aspects of the trailer that intrigued me, but I was right. Although not the worst part of the TATBILB universe, and an easy form of escapism, I just couldn’t connect to this series as much.

I won’t lie, I didn’t always find it easy to connect with and like Lara Jean, but Kitty was a completely different level for me. A lot of her character quirks are things I find personally annoying and can’t stand in people in real life, not to mention all of the second hand embarrassment from the often ridiculous choices she makes. I’m sure plenty of people find Kitty fun and relatable, but not me, and so much of her persona made it a difficult watch for me. Her boyfriend Dae I similarly didn’t care for, but for different reasons. He was either boring, or I just felt bad for him. I couldn’t find myself caring for him the way I did other characters, so I was quite happy with the decision Kitty made in the end.

On the other hand, I absolutely loved Yuri and Min Ho. Their characters were interesting and felt multi-dimensional in a way that the others weren’t – perhaps this is due to them initially being presented as mean and spoiled rich kids – until we delve more into their life and personalities. I actually enjoyed getting to know them more and watch them develop as characters. I just felt that same level of character development wasn’t necessarily represented in the others. Q was also a fun character to watch, although I didn’t love him like Yuri and Min Ho.

What particularly stood out to me in XO, Kitty is how chaotic the narrative and characters are, particularly in the last episode. Perhaps this is a sign that these stories are no longer for me, although I would probably still watch a season 2 for the characters I enjoy. I just felt that the final episode had a lot going on, particularly with the constant love interest changes, that felt very messy and unnecessary. Of course there was build up to these moments throughout the season, however I felt that the way they were handled in the end was too much at once. I know others who disagree with me, which is fine. Probably an age thing. I enjoyed Kitty’s changing dynamics with Min Ho and Yuri the most and am looking forward to seeing how this progresses in a second season. I think there was just more of a maturity there than her relationship with Dae. And not going to lie, I spent most of my time wanting to see an enemies to friends to lovers arc between Kitty and Min Ho. I’m a sucker for that trope and all of the associated banter.

Whilst the love story is one aspect of the narrative, another important part of XO, Kitty is her search to connect more with her late mother. I just felt that too often this part of the storyline took a back seat, and when it was at the forefront, it was far from the most engaging part of the overarching narrative. I did however enjoy finding out the truth about the adopted baby, and how everyone at KISS was connected.

What is NHIE? And yes season 3 should be the final season I was just guessing they might make a fourth one the reason I'm eh about it because I don't trust jenny can't we have a final season and have Jelly written perfectly? I hated having Belly emotionally cheat people over hype the so called cheating Jere did but really the problem is the emotionally cheating I heard she compares him to Conrad and not in a good way digs at hi insecurities etc. imagine if the reverse happened they really tried to ruin the relationship Book 3 Belly was never mine she had huge development at the end only to regress out of nowhere. I never thought she was an amazing writer but god her only books and shows aren't as bad as this.

Never Have I Ever! It's a Netflix show about a teenager in highschool wanting to dive into a sexual awakening all the while struggling with grief, loss, connecting w her Indian roots, connecting w her mom, etc. That's probably not the best way to sum up the story lmao but im lazy to revise.

I found the first TATBILB movie comforting but I'm not very fond of her other works either. they're just Okay. EXCEPT for bellyjere. I love them so much bc they are an amazing and beautiful bestfriends-to-lovers ship (btw bsfs-to-lovers is my favorite trope, if anybody wants to recommend more to me ill love u 5ever) that is so beautifully acted by Lola and Gavin who have AMAZING chemistry and do a bunch of little acting choices that I'm obsessed with and it would KILL ME if their potential isn't fulfilled bc of wanting to force an endgame ship that came from a relatively outdated book series and is a very poor, arguably problematic representation of what young women should be looking for in a romantic partner

hey Liv! so I had sent you the first ask about The Summer I Turned Pretty - and I'm so glad to see a few other people join in on the convo! though I have to say I disagree and prefer TSIP over TATBILB, both in books and in the screen adaptations. so, the lead female in TSITP is 15yo and turns 16 on the show, and the brothers in the love triangle are about 16 and 17 each. so they are young and sure we're not the intended audience but I guess just something to keep in mind for when you watch it. I finished the show in two days and honestly, it might be one of the best book to screen adaptations I've ever seen, and it really helped that the author was able to be so hands on. sure, they made some changes but really only 2 things had me "scratching my head" so to speak, otherwise I didn't mind the changes. personally, I recommend watching the show first and then reading the books. Book 1 is the primary focus but there are some elements from Book 2 and even 3 that are incorporated. plus, it's already been renewed for a season 2! which will now be a loooong agonizing wait, lol.

i didnt even know there was a love triangle, i know nothing about this other than the name of it lol thanks for the info! it sounds cute :)

- The Silas thing could've easily happened for real and it makes me realise how unsafe the Coterie is like there's no real security for the place and you can only secure your room but anyone could walk in and hang around in the bathroom or kitchen or any of their common areas like....

- Seeing the actress who's working with Luca in the kitchen makes me remember that she played Jojo on Home Economics and i reallyyyy wanted her to end up with Connor but now i'll never know because the show got cancelled 😣

- Even hearing the recap was complicated like My Goodness......they went through one million things together

- This amnesia thing actually works for Evans so that they can make him redeemable as a better person

- "You don't like ramen" the way that one statement rolled out the tension of their history/past/emotional rollercoaster oh wow

- "Torn between the two of them" one of them has been in love with her for years and quite literally took a bullet for you and the other one is a co-tenant that has bonded with her over the course of adrenaline-inducing adventures like i think it's not really a torn situation i fear....

- I'm acc a bit displeased that the show tried to force this love triangle thing when Evan and Mariana have multiple seasons of history & love & hurt & complex feelings like Joaquin is just not able to evoke that level of emotion in her imo

- I loveeee Evan i'm sorry like he's literally the love of my life and i want to hear his little facts at every party forever

- The premise of the Coterie is so revolutionary because look at how Luca's life has been impacted since he moved in, especially for Callie's help with his green card.

- Awwwww Bailee Madison's cameo (i have no idea who she was on The Fosters 🧍🏾‍♀️)

- Awwwww so Jamie met Callie at the brother's engagement party 🥺 maybe i do need to watch The Fosters

- Saying "it's not very sexy" about an app is very out of character for Evan like who wrote that....

- I love the tension that a little bickering can bring into the room 🤭

- "I don't think he's ever gonna remember the man that he was" why did my heart just drop to my stomach......endgame is looking very rocky ☹️

- Mariana needs to be more careful omds like why show your face at a search on his property!!!

- Also there's a high chance that Silas has an inside informant who already warned him ahead OR he has exhumed the body already

- Also getting a bit worried about how the show will wrap up its 3 million storylines by the next episode.

- The Coterie is an odd place because imagine coming home from a long work day and wanting to just sit in the dining area and eat a meal and now suddenly you pass someone breaking down in tears in the hallway like......

- I KNOW THAT INTRO MELODY OHHHHHHH they're playing Aly & AJ!!!!!

- The parallel of Evan gaining back his memories with Mariana vs her sleeping with Joaquin at the very same time......network tv can be so insidious 😭

- I cannot believe this is over. This show has seen me through some of the most life-changing years I have had and it gave me laughter and joy and a (virtual) family and i will miss it so much. I'll also miss livetweeting about it but i'll really miss this group dynamic because the concept of being an adult and living with a bunch of friends like this.....it feels like a dream. I'm glad I got to experience that dream through this show.
