Weekly Watch SPECIAL EDITION: Food Shows
Published on June 18, 2018, by Ailish Elzy.
Tumblr media
I wanted to write this food show edition of Weekly Watch for a little while now and was taking my time with it so I could watch all the shows and get a real feel for what to suggest. And then Anthony Bourdain died and it made me think about these shows more seriously.
We’ve always had the Food Network and the Cooking Channel, but we’ve recently had an upsurge in the quality of these shows and I really think you can trace it back to Bourdain. Whether you were an early fan of Parts Unknown or No Reservations or you just recently got into Chef’s Table or Ugly Delicious, you have Bourdain to thank for that.
There’s a lot that has been written in the past week and will continue to be written about in the years to come because Bourdain had a profound impact on the food industry, on the food documentary and on how we see different parts of the world. I only recently got into his shows in the past three years, but I very quickly fell in love with his passion, his sense of adventure and his honesty. He was an incredibly inspiring and fascinating dude to watch.
I’m not here to talk about him in depth, mostly because I don’t feel like that’s my place. I want to talk about the impact I’ve seen on food television because of him and his legacy. This will be a slightly different Weekly Watch. It’ll all be food shows I love and recommend watching because this is a large umbrella of a genre that’s worth exploring.
The real reason I wanted to write this in the first place was that I recently acquired two new books. One about Wine called Wine. All The Time by comedy writer and leisure enthusiast Marissa A Ross. A book I highly recommend no matter how much or how little you know about wine (I know very little). The other book I acquired was Cravings by supermodel and well-known internet person Chrissy Teigen. Both books are very dope and enjoyable in different ways.
Since I’ve been reading them, I’ve subsequently stopped watching scripted shows and fallen down a very enjoyable hole of watching shows about food and wine. It’s really hard to watch these shows and not immediately think you’re a talented chef yourself. Shows about food and cooking are highly underrated in my opinion. It’s not just your mom’s Food Network anymore either, it has really expanded.
I’m sure you’ve noticed the influx of well-produced food-related documentaries on Netflix or channels expanding on their brand and adding a food show. It’s not even just on TV. YouTube holds some very well produced fooding shows (which is what I feel like we should be calling them) from channels like Tastemade or Bon Appetit as well as homemade shows by regular-ass kids.
I gotta say I am totally here for this! Food shows are a wonderful break from scripted TV. You can throw them on in the background when you’re cleaning but you can also sit and watch them like you would any other show. You can even watch them when you’re cooking, although you might feel inferior depending on if you’re watching Chef’s Table and if that’s the case, maybe just throw on Nailed It when you’re making food to feel a little better about yourself. I will say the one place I don’t recommend watching these shows is at the gym. It should be pretty obvious, but I thought I could handle it and then immediately got SO hungry and had to make a pizza.
If you need it, here are some shows I recommend, where you can find them and a solid episode you can start with if you’re unsure.
Nailed it
Why it’s good: This show is almost everything I’ve ever wanted a competition cooking show to be. It’s silly, it’s realistic, it’s short, and they win money. The premise is home cooks try to recreate all those things you see on Pinterest with people making cakes that look like emoji’s or Spongebob. Nicole Byer, the host, is EASILY the best part and really the only reason to watch it!
A dope episode to start with: Honestly the first one. The episodes are short and you’ll get right into the vibe of it.
Where you can watch it: Netflix babyyy!! Also they just got renewed for season 2
Chef’s Table: Pastry
Why it’s good: If you love high quality docu-series AND food, you’ll love this. It’s got that cinematic quality goodness mixed with a really heartwarming story about someone trying to achieve their dreams. They really do a good job of weaving a narrative into these people’s stories of success.
A dope episode to start with: Milk Bar. It’s fun, it’s really American, and it shows you a very approachable way to cook delicious and simple desserts.
Where you can watch it: Netflix duh!
Bonus: Pastry is the fourth season, the other three seasons focus on non-pastry foods, or what they call in the biz, food. There’s a fantastic episode about Nancy Silverton (season 3 episode 3) that has such a great dramatic arc it really seems more like a narrative show than a documentary.
Ugly Delicious
Why it’s good: I was particularly drawn to this series because they focus on one type of food per episode. And they really know how to get you. Episode titles include: Pizza, Tacos, Stuffed and Fried Chicken. Honestly, unless you’re a vegan, what’s not to like? They take you all around the world. They eat the highest quality, the lowest quality (usually fast food) the weirdest and the least expected versions of whichever food they’re profiling. You’re definitely going to learn something new about a food you’ve loved. The style of this show is also particularly cool. They’ll do a parody genre, or have a section just be animated. They really have fun with it which makes you as a viewer have fun with it!
A dope episode to start with: I’d say pick whichever food you like the most and go from there.
Where you can watch it: Netflix (obviously!!)
Frankie Cooks
Why it’s good: If you’re into Italian home cooking, but you’re a little intimidated, BUT you also want to learn about why you’re supposed to do the things you do while cooking, Frankie is your dude! His hyper-enthusiastic personality will draw you in, but his pasta knowledge will keep you coming back for more. I’m a HUGE fan of pizza and pasta and have had many of his meals made for me by my boyfriend who is both obsessed with his videos and the one who introduced me to
A dope episode to start with: As will become clear with a lot of these, it’s best to find the food you want to learn more about and start with that, but the one that got me into Frankie was this video.
Where you can watch it: Youtube, baby! Here’s his personal channel and here’s where you can find him on Tastemade.
Good Times with Jen
Why it’s good: Another Tastemade person! Jen is such a delight. She specializes in Filipina food and comfort foods that are easy to recreate at home. Her personality is fun and authentic which can be really rare with these kinds of videos (trust me, I watched a lot). She has a lot of great videos of her getting stoned and making or attempting to make food which is so fun to watch. But I really love her videos because I feel like I learn more about Filipino food and they’re actually dishes I can eat and enjoy (I’m allergic to a lot of foods).
A dope episode to start with: A funny video to start with is this one, but a good food video is this Filipino bacon recipe.
Where you can watch it: On Tastemade’s youtube!! Or just follow those links.
Huang’s World
Why it’s good: I think this was the first cooking show on vice that I ever watched and I really loved it. I was REALLY apprehensive about vice show at first, especially shows about food. I guess I just didn’t trust that they knew what they were talking about. Boy, was I proven the fuck wrong. Eddie is a fucking G. He really knows his shit, but he’s also really open to learning about the culture where he’s visiting. I think that’s what I enjoy most, how open and respectful he is about where he is. The food they eat is also really great.
A dope episode to start with: I personally loved the episode in Japan.
Where you can watch it: Viceland! (Either Youtube or on cable I guess)
F*ck That’s Delicious
Why it’s good: This is the type of show I actually expected from Viceland. Something raw, lots of cussing, smoking weed and just eating a bunch of food. This show is really all over the place. It’s hard to describe, but that’s also why it’s so fun.
A dope episode to start with: A while back The New Yorker had a great write up about a specific episode which is a really solid one to start with to get a feel for what this show is all about.
Where you can watch it: Viceland probably or maybe on YouTube.
Parts Unknown
I would be remiss if I did not include an Anthony Bourdain show on this list. There are so many good episodes and they’re all good for their own reasons. One of my favorite episodes is Season 8 episode two called Hanoi. This is the episode where he famously interviewed Barack Obama. My other favorite episode is Season 6 Episode 5 titled Bay Area. Because If Bourdain goes to Oakland, I obviously have to know where and what he ate. I was not disappointed!
I will say that the best way to watch Parts Unknown is to go through the seasons and find either the closest place to where you’re from or the most interesting sounding place you’ve always wanted to visit. Whether you know the place well or you don’t know it at all you’re bound to learn a lot of new information.

Facebook launches Watch tab of original video shows
Facebook has a new home for original video content produced exclusively for it by partners, who will earn 55 percent of ad break revenue while Facebook keeps 45 percent. The Watch tab and several dozen original shows will start rolling out to a small group of U.S. users tomorrow on mobile, desktop and Facebooks TV apps.
By hosting original programming, Facebook could boost ad revenue and give people a reason to frequently return to the News Feed for content they cant get anywhere else.
Watch features personalized recommendations of live and recorded shows to watch, plus categories like Most Talked About, Whats Making People Laugh and Shows Your Friends Are Watching. Publishers can also share their shows to the News Feed to help people discover them. A Watchlist feature lets you subscribe to updates on new episodes of your favorite shows. Fans can connect with each other and creators through a new feature that links shows to Groups.
Facebook says it plans to roll out access to Watch to more users and more content creators soon, starting with the rest of the U.S. before expanding internationally. Users with access will see a TV-shaped Watch button in the bottom navigation bar of Facebooks main app that opens the new video hub.
Facebook admits that weve also funded some shows as examples, but notes that these are only a small percentage of all the available shows. We want any publisher/creator who is interested to be able to create a show in the future, a Facebook spokesperson tells me. So there will be hundreds of shows at launch, and well hopefully scale to thousands.
Business Insider reported some leaked details about the redesign earlier today, but pegged the launch of original programming as starting August 28th, when the shows actually will begin to roll out tomorrow.
What Facebooks First Shows Look Like
Facebooks shows will run the gamut from live event coverage to reality TV to scripted programs. More and more people are coming to Facebook in order to watch video Facebooks director of video product Daniel Danker tells me. When they come with that in mind, we want to make a place for them where they can find that video, connect with the creators and publishers they love, and know they wont miss out if theres a new episode from one of those creators.
Heres a list of some of the original programming that will be available on Watch:
Tastemades Kitchen Little This cooking show sees kids watch a how-to recipe video, then instruct a pro chef how to make the dish with comedic results
Major League Baseball The MLB will broadcast one game a week live on Facebook
Major League Baseball 12:25Live A comedic look at baseball with help from the fans
Mike Rowe Rowe finds people whove done great things for their community and gives them a special experience in return
Nas Daily Vlogger Nas (Correction: Not the rapper) makes videos with his biggest friends each day
Gabby Bernstein Motivational speaker and author answers fans life questions in live and recorded segments
A&Es Bae or Bail: Reality TV game show where couples face their fears and see who runs
All Def Digitals Inside the Office A look inside the office life at Russel Simmons hip-hop media empire
BillboardsHow it Went Down A documentary series of musicians sharing crazy stories
David Lopezs My Social Media Life A reality show about the social media stars life
Golden State Warriors Championship Rewind A behind-the-scenes look at the Bay Areas NBA championship 2016-2017 season
Univision DeportesLiga MX Live coverage of LigaMX soccer matches
National GeographicsWere Wired that Way: Mini-documentaries about weird quirks of humanity like songs you cant get out of your head
Nat Geo WILDs Safari Live Watch live safaris led by National Geographics guides
NASAs Science @ NASA Explore science topics in quick four to five-minute episodes
NBAs WNBA All-Access A behind the scenes show with womens basketball stars
The Dodos Comeback Kids: Animal Edition features determined animals facing difficult conditions or challenges meet people who refuse to give up on them.
Tommy Mac A master woodworker gives live tutorials on how to make furniture
Whats clearly absent is the type of longer-form scripted dramas and comedies people are used to watching on television. Instead, there are plenty of mini-documentaries, reality shows, and sports coverage.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg writes that We believe its possible to rethink a lot of experiences through the lens of building community including watching video. Watching a show doesnt have to be passive . . .Youll be able to chat and connect with people during an episode, and join groups with people who like the same shows afterwards to build community.
When you open Watch, youll be able to scroll through a long list of categories of shows to view. Alternatively, you can either swipe over or arrive from a notification about a new episode to view the Watchlist of all the lastest shows released by creators you follow. Once youve opened an episode youll see all the details about it, with one tab for joining a live comment reel with other viewers, and an Up Next tab displaying what youll view after the current episode if you prefer a glazed-eyes lean-back experience.
Theres no specific content restrictions on swearing or violence beyond Facebooks existing community standards, but Facebook will monitor for shows that get flagged.
Publishers can choose to insert ad breaks if they want to earn money off their shows, though the guidelines on where and how long they can be are still being finalized. If publishers want to give away their content, they dont have to show ads. Another option is to do product placed or branded content, in which case the creator has to tag the sponsor paying them for transparency. Shows will have their own dedicated Facebook Pages, and creators can set up special show Groups where fans can ask questions and geek out together.
Beyond the Watch tab, you can also discover shows through the News Feed if a publisher you follow posts an episode or friends are talking about it. That gives Facebook the opportunity to artificially boost the presence of shows in News Feed to build a bigger audience for the new content initiative.
Evolving From Spontaneous To Deliberate Viewing
Facebook first launched its dedicated video tab in April 2016, but it only hosted the more generic News Feed videos people were already seeing from Pages and friends. Now Facebook is in the business of funding original content, initially through direct payments, though it seeks to switch entirely to a revenue-share model in the future to make its original programming effort sustainable.
Facebooks competitors like YouTube and Snapchat have already experimented with creating original video content. YouTube Red funds several original series, giving bigger production budgets to some of its biggest stars. Snapchat has tried making its own shows in-house, but now focuses on signing deals with partners like TV studios to get fresh, vertical video content into its Discover section.
Facebooks benefit is that Watch is cross-platform, allowing people to view videos from all their devices, while also being a daily destination for 1.32 billion users. Its already become a powerhouse in serendipitous video discovery via the News Feed, and Watch will surely provide enough suggestions to get people hooked on shows they werent expecting.
But through premium original programming, Facebook is also trying to become a home for deliberate video consumption where people come to view a specific show. While there are already plenty of reasons to visit Facebook, original shows give people a reason to spend longer staring at their screens. If it can drive enough viewers to these shows thanks to its 2 billion total users, Facebook could offer significant revenue-share payouts, attracting better and better content creators.
Facebooks been trying to eat the whole internet for years now. With Watch and these shows, its breaking out of the web to challenge traditional television, which is seeing viewership slide. As ad spends follow eyeballs from TV to the web, Watch could give Facebook a way to net more attention and dollars.

Facebook launches Watch tab of original video shows

The Viral Spiral: Live Streaming
Hi all,
In this week’s edition of The Viral Spiral, we’re taking a look at live streaming.
With the quick and steady rise of Facebook Live, and the increased functionality of livestreaming through the YouTube and Twitter apps, the trend has become ubiquitous in the digital space.
Below are some notable examples from a variety of publishers, artists, TV shows and consumer products. The key theme is that they peaked the curiosity of viewers with intriguing premises and followed up with surprising pay-offs.
Mr Robot made headlines, and racked up 2.2mil views, by premiering a scene from Season 2 after a long, mysterious countdown. Once the countdown finished, a masked member of the fsociety revealed himself, explaining that fans were about to see something very secret.
In partnership with USA Networks, The Verge hosted a Mr. Robot after show on Facebook Live and USANetworks.com, following the airing of each episode (starting with 203).
The comedy destination Super Deluxe have launched a ton of strange, hilarious Facebook Live videos, including:
A live Telenovevala episode where viewers can determine scene outcomes.
The creation of a pizza made using ingredients decided upon by viewers (that they forced people to eat). Watch if you dare.
A live race between a Tortoise and a Hare. The ultimate showdown.
BuzzFeed wrapped rubber-bands around a watermelon, one by one, until it finally exploded. At the peak of this 40-minute video, 800k viewers were watching live. Watch here.
The Stranger Things kids attempted ‘80s Trivia on Facebook Live. They failed in hilarious fashion.
In probably one of the strangest challenge videos of all time, LADBible live streamed four ice-cream pops melting in a battle to see which one would outlast the others. This oddly engaging clip pulled in over 6.3 million total views.
In the first use of YouTube mobile live streaming by a Hollywood studio, 20th Century Fox broadcast a Comic Con Q&A with the cast ofAliens to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film’s release.
The WWE further eventized this year’s Wrestlemania by broadcasting a live pre-show on YouTube, pushing viewers to download a 30-day free trial of the subscription-based WWE Network.
Tastemade broadcasted a live video of tiny food preparation in a tiny kitchen, and viewers went nuts. The clip has over 39 million views to date, and almost 85k comments.
Airbnb also took advantage of Periscope 360 to give viewers a tour of different properties around the world. Their video of a house in Kauai, Hawaii accumulated more than 3.6 million views.
Livestream Fails
While livestreaming can be a super engaging way to reach a massive audience, it can also fail miserably if not executed well - both in concept and on the technological side of things.
HBO encountered this when they produced a Facebook Live event to build hype for the seventh season of Game of Thrones. That event involved watching a block of ice melt which concealed the premiere date. That is, of course, before the stream began glitching and was eventually was taken down due to technical difficulties. It seems being forced to watch ice melt understandably rubbed GoT fans the wrong way. They took to alternative social media platforms to vent their frustration, with one fan calling the ice-melting exercise “the biggest troll job in the world”.
Iceland-Based Reyka Vodka missed the mark (and certainly misjudged the attention span of the internet) with their Holiday themed Facebook Live Stream, where a man goes on to wish every single resident of Iceland “Happy Holidays.” By name. For over two hours.
The New York Times attempted to livestream a morning pitch meeting. Many took issue with this tactic as not being on-brand. Gawker, at the time, even accused the stream of being staged, and, worse yet, boring.
You’d think a livestream interview with President Obama would be a home run. However, due to technical problems, BuzzFeed’s streamwas stalled and their visibly-frazzled host had to kill time with an off-the-cuff ramble, losing viewers and creating an awkward start.
There’s also the trend of seemingly unprepared talking heads, in which brands lose viewers due to long pauses and lack of engaging dialogue. Here’s a Huffington Post example.
Best Practices
Challenges/Stunts
There’s just something about the unpredictability of watching a live challenge or stunt that people love. Having a pay-off at the end of a video (such as a winner being crowned or a disgusting pizza being eaten) gives viewers a reason to keep watching.
Just Because It’s Live, Doesn’t Mean It’s Interesting
Avoid content that’s too drawn out or doesn’t allow viewers to engage. Show fans something they couldn’t see anywhere else. Give them the unexpected, or else they’ll scroll right by!
Make It an Event
Livestreaming can help a televised event seem even bigger. Creative twists on pre-show, after-show and behind-the-scenes content can up the ante of standard linear programming.
Demos/How To Videos
Putting a creative twist on a standard “How To” video is a good recipe for success. People love to learn and share information. Tapping into this trend can lead to high view counts. (Just ask Tastemade.)
Plan for the Worst
Technical issues can derail even the most sure-fire concepts. Planning ahead, and devising backup procedures, could help you avoid scrambling on-air.

National Geographics Safari Live Watch live safaris led by National Geographics guides
