We often purchase ang ku kuehs or red tortoise cakes from Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh (吉祥红龟粿) if we are around the vicinity of the stall. This lot of colourful snacks are for both my family and sister’s friend. Each colour represented a different filling except for the red ones which is either Peanut (花生) or Sweet Bean Paste (豆沙). Grey is Salted Bean Paste (咸豆沙), Green is Coconut (椰子), Purple is Yam (芋头) and Yellow is Corn (玉米).

🌑💙 Blue Sea Dragon Moon

This was a sort of spur of the moment formline design that popped into my head not long after I heard that a super blue moon was happening today!! I used a Blue Glaucus for the design mainly because I really like nudibranches for their colours and cool shapes!! Blue Glaucus (aka the Blue Sea Dragon, the Sea Swallow, the Sea Angel, and the Dragon Slug) is a beautiful kind of nudibranch that I’ve been wanting to do a formline of for a while, and so I seized the opportunity to make a design for this formline!

Despite how last minute this idea was, I’m really happy with how it turned out!! (Also to be completely honest I expected this design to be relatively simple and straightforward and it took me about 9 hours total to finish)

Hope you guys are enjoying the Super Blue Moon!! I was hoping to see it tonight which is why I did my best to finish this design today, but unfortunately it’s very overcast right now so I can’t even see the moon 😭 hopefully it’ll be clearer tomorrow.

After our dinner and grocery shopping, was on the way out of the shopping mall when I remembered that I have accumulated enough stamps to redeem a S$3.50 cup of dessert from Nine Fresh (九鲜). I picked the Nine Fresh Signature (九鲜招牌) with mixed bean curd and grass jelly base topped with red bean, green bean, pinto bean, peanut and taro (yam) balls. The staff asked if I want soft or hard peanuts. Soft means stewed peanuts and hard is roasted peanuts. I am glad I went for the latter as the crunchy texture complemented the soft and silky bean curd and grass jelly well.

Mum got the Grass Jelly Special (黑糖芦荟仙草冻) with grass jelly base and topped with aloe vera pearl jelly, black sugar jelly dice, milk ball and taro (yam) balls. She also requested for sweeten red beans (+S$0.70) to be added so it’s S$3.50 in total and I get another stamp added to the rewards card.

Do you have a favorite kind of plant? A favorite tree?

chinese hibiscus are my favourite flowers, next to star jasmine and tiger lilies. all grow in my grandparents' yard in malaysia ❤️

in a wider scope, i study dye plants and trees and thus the plants i can identify and feel most connected to are dye precursors, especially those used traditionally across southeast asia. when i think of my favourite trees i think of all these tropical hardwoods and plants. so here is a non-exhaustive list of southeast asian dye plants:

🌻 sappanwood (biancaea sappan) also called brazilwood not to be confused with another, different tree also called brazilwood; it was taken from southeast asia by the portuguese and brought with them to the americas - red, pink, purple

🌻 indigo (called tagom or tagum in various filipino languages, tarum in malay) - blue, blue, blue, there are several species but japanese indigo as well as a few other varieties are commonly grown

🌻 annatto seed (this is the most common of filipino dyes from what i've read) - yellow, orange, red

narra woodchips (national tree of the philippines) - brown, red, pink, pinkish brown

asthma plant (tawa-tawa) - yellow

indian almond tree (talisay) - the roots, leaves, bark, all rich with tannins, yellow dye naturally but can give greys and blacks

mahogany (mahoni in malay) - reddish brown

taro plant (called gabi, aba, abalong) - leaves give yellowish green

🌻 turmeric root (kunyit in malay) - yellow. not very lightfast so usually combined with other dyes

🌻 ceriops tagal (mangrove - soga tinggi in indonesian) - reddish rusty warm brown, a vital and very rare dye now due to deforestation. the dyers in bali i know who use it source it from a fair trade org in papua that harvests small, controlled amounts. i have been very lucky to use this and the colour is magnificent

yellow flamboyant bark or yellow flame (soga jambal in indonesian, peltophorum pterocarpum) - warm yellow to red to dark brown, using peeled bark

cudrania javanensis (tegeran in indonesian) wood - yellow

🌻 cockspur thorn (maclura cochinchinensis) - yellow, very strong high quality yellow

mango - leaves, bark, peels give yellow, especially when processed as lake pigment

angsana - wood shavings make honey brown

🌻 jackfruit heartwood - clear strong yellow

🌻 symplocos - natural bio-accumulator of aluminum, used as a mordant in dyeing

🌻 fire flame bush (woodfordia fruticosa) - flowers contain strong tannins, combined with mangrove mud and fermented to raise the iron in the mixture to create a dye that is the primary traditional way of achieving grey through black

pandan leaves, mangosteen leaves and peels, cassava leaves, and lemongrass are all also used as dye plants. i have seen recipes where cassava leaves and mango leaves are pounded together in water and left to ferment in the sun to create yellows and greens

I would love a meerca review! One of my earliest disappointments in life was waking up to find my adorable meerca standing on two feet with a shortened tail and one fist raised to the skies. Of all Neopets I feel like you’d be hard pressed to think of one that was done a greater disservice by conversion than the meerca.

Meercas are one of a only a few rodent 'pets, and between them, the Xweektok, and the Usul, Meercas definitely come across as the most rodent-esq—though which rodent is somewhat ambiguous. I like their faces a lot, which sport little dot eyes and a set of buck teeth.

The Meercas big theme and uniqueness comes from their tails. It's harder to tell with the converted art (which we'll get to shortly), but Meercas have incredibly long tails that they use to balance on. It's a fun premise that gives them a lot of personality, especially when combined with their round bodies.

Beyond that, Meercas have a good use of color, which white around the bulk the body, under their tails, and in their ears. My only nitpick is that in the converted art, the color underneath the tail bleeds a bit onto the outside, which isn't too big of a deal but always low-key bugs me.

Customization-wise, Meercas were unfortunately done pretty dirty. I'm not sure I can call them the worst case of conversion, because to be fair, conversion kind of requires all pets to be standing normally and to have a fist when possible. The issue is more with the entire premise of customization itself, but I'm not going to blame a converted pet for, well, being converted.

The Meerca at least doesn't change that much about the body at random the way the Wocky or Lutari did, and the old art was starting to look very dated, with minimal shading and some kind of janky anatomy. I also like how the converted version did things like remove the little hairs from the top of the head.

However, what I can't excuse with the converted Meerca is the absolute butchering of their tails. The entire point of this species is that their tails are stupidly long. Even if customization means they can't sit on their tails anymore, they could've at least kept the length, as it was the key element of the design. Maybe the concern was trying to keep the pet itself fairly centered, but like... have the tail curled up against the body, have it go vertically up above the body, fold it over on itself, there were tons of ways to keep the length. Unfortunately none of that was done, and we ended up with a sadder Meerca as a result.

Favorite Colours:

Candy: It's a gumball with those sour belt candies! It's absolutely perfect for the species, utilizing both their long tails and gumball bodies beautifully. The shading on the body is also richly detailed and gives it that extra bit of gumball shine, and the colors are nice and cohesive. Good stuff all around.

Striped: One of only two striped pets that doesn't default to being blue with pink stripes, the striped Meerca is a chipmunk, applying some lovely brown shades and lots and lots of stripes but stylizing them just enough to fit the body shape. I also like little details, like removing the outline around the white part of the body.

Woodland: Similar to the candy Meerca, the woodland Meerca takes full advantage of the round body and long tail to make it into a taro, a type of root vegetable. While its very different than most woodland pets, the tail works perfect and the body has lots of attention to detail.

BONUS: Maraquan Meercas, while not the best Maraquan pets, have to get at least a shout-out for the fun pufferfish concept. I do wish there was more color, maybe on the fins (I know pufferfish aren't known for having a ton of color, but this is a fantasy creature first and foremost), but the overall idea is very fun and it's one of the only ways to get the old Meerca expression post-customization. The converted and UC/styled version are literally identical save for the customized version sporting fists, which aren't as good at the original's hands but aren't too bothersome.

I’m back with some more YTTD Headcanons!

Here are the type of dice I think the main 12 participants (+Ranger as a bonus) would have/use while playing Dungeons and Dragons:

Sara: She’d have one ‘cute’ pair of dice, it’s probably pink and/or sparkly.

Mishima: He uses the practice set that Nao made while trying to make resin dice. She has offered to make better ones for him, but he likes the charm of the slightly deformed ones she made first (even if they’re accidentally a little weighted making the d20 land on 7 most of the time).

Joe: He has one set of dice, but it’s all mis-matched dice that he bought separately. His dice set is his pride and joy.

Kai: Just using the cheapest dice he could find, he’s just here to see what the game Sara’s been hyping up so much is like.

Alice: He’d have saved up to get a good, kinda expensive set of dice for himself that he really likes, but Reko stole them, so he’s stuck using digital dice on his phone.

Reko: Stole Alice’s cool dice, refuses to give them back.

Nao: She made herself some resin dice, maybe they have multiple colours swirling around in them, they’d be pretty cool.

Shin: Total dice gremlin, has a massive collection of all sorts of colours/materials/etc but refuses to lend them to anyone.

Kanna: Exception to the above Headcanon, usually uses a shiny green set of dice that Shin lets her borrow.

Gin: He uses cheap plastic red dice because that’s the only thing he could get, but he doesn’t care as long as he gets to play D&D and possibly stab something.

Q-Taro: He’d either have the plain cheap red dice like Gin, or as my friend suggested he’d have metal dice. Either option works.

Keiji: He has no dice of his own, meaning he just uses his phone instead. But unlike using digital dice like Alice does, he’d use a goddamn random number generator. It unsettles everyone else at the table every time, to the point where others have offered to let him use their dice whenever he has to roll. He will not yield with the random number generator.

Bonus: Rio Ranger has stolen a dice or two from as many different people as he can without them noticing, so his set is a mix of everyone else’s.
