His – I Didn't Think I Would Fall In Love
Just binged this delightful little 2019 coming-of-age series from Japan thanks to the recommendation from @lurkingshan. It's a short and sweet five episode story of teenagers coming to grips with love. The surfing setting took me back to beach summers in Santa Cruz so this also hit my nostalgia button. Sweet, funny and enjoyed the main characters' voyages into maturity.

Also, great hug to end the show.

This opening ↓ in Episode 1…I believe it's done in tribute to the openings of 《古畑任三郎》 (Furuhata Ninzaburō), another favourite Japanese murder mystery series of mine.

I want to be Your Koi Fish
Warning: +18 content, criminal underworld, intercourse, strong language - and so on
Fanfiction based on: "Baki" by Itagaki Keisuke
>23<
The great day has finally come, one of the most important days in all men's lives. GROWING ADULT. Although Kaoru hardly ever exhibited very childish behavior, she even thought at times that he had been born an adult, she watched fondly as Kizaki eagerly undertook the organization of the "grand transition ceremony", tradition of the Hanayama family: every male member went through it, to go on a testosterone-opening adventure, surviving alone in the forest for eight days. After all, every self-respecting man should be able to take care of himself - eat something, warm himself, drink, protect. Kaoru wasn't really into cooking, but she thought he could do it somehow...in his original way. As an exemplary wife, she escorted her husband to the front door of the building while trying to keep a straight face, which wasn't easy at all. The other two, Ryuji and Yoji, who were taking Kaoru into the wild with Kizaki, had the same problem. Only his deputy, agitated, even excited by the solemn moment, took everything very seriously. Bear looked COMICALLY in a trapper outfit. Dark pants, trekking shoes, a small checked shirt, a slightly short jacket with spacious pockets...all this fastened with a large waistband and a huge backpack with fastenings on the chest. The image was complemented by a otherwise facial hat with a rather large brim, which covered beautifully again, shiny black hair. Inhale-exhale...one more moment...
- Good research and have fun, my love. - she said with a smile.
- Thanks. - Kaoru said, not very enthusiastically.
Guess he sensed that they had similar views on his clothes. As soon as they drove away, she turned on her heel, got into the elevator, and after waiting a few seconds, she burst out laughing.
Hanabi was sitting in the office with a laptop in front of nose when they returned and sank heavily on the couches. Tanaka appeared soon after. He glanced at the three men in suits, drowning in thought.
- Are you back already? - Ken asked. - I wonder how the boss will handle...
- What do you mean? - Kizaki asked.
- Well... - said the boy, sliding open one of the cabinets standing next to him.
Inside was EVERYTHING that Kaoru was to take with him to survive. Everything he needed for his "big men's ceremony". Basic tools, spare clothing, carry-on tent, flashlight, first aid kit, and a few other things she probably didn't notice.
- HE HAS LEFT ALL LUGGAGE?! - the deputy roared in frustration.
- No...he took a towel and some spices ... - muttered the young man, scratching his chin.
- Then what did he have in his backpack?!
- Mostly alcohol...let's think...what else was he packing...
- After everything I told him... - Kizaki sighed in a broken state.
- Oh, he also took a suit and cigarettes. - Tanaka continued enumerating.
- Did he even take a hunting knife?!
- Em...yeah...took the razor.
- Oh my God...
The deputy and the other two bodyguards slumped heavily on the leather sofas. She looked at them disapprovingly. They acted as if they didn't know him. Hanayama always did what he liked, ignored the rules he didn't have to follow, preferred to act in his own way, mostly alone. She absolutely understood that they were worried about him, but thought that after all he had been through in 20 years, going to the woods would be a rather pleasant trip. She glanced at laptop screen, tapped two keys simultaneously to save the changes. Was nervous, yes. It can always happen that he will appear in the wrong place, at the wrong time, will hit someone who cannot be handled this time. But she tried to stay positive.
- All that's left to do is wait for Kaoru to come back, Kizaki-san... and keep an eye on business while he's away. - she said, intervening.
- Right, Hanabi-sama. - the deputy replied a little calmer. - All his life, the boss has disappeared without calling for anything. This time he will spend a whole week in complete survival conditions. I guess even for him it will be difficult. Even though he is the head of the family, we cannot do anything. We have to be patient.
She tried. Sank at work, especially at home. Went to bed a little earlier, but maybe it made her get up earlier. Her mind was still drifting away to him. Couldn't wait for his return. Who would have thought she would miss him so much? If you think about it, they haven't actually split up for a long time. She concentrated on work, visited her father. Time flew by until that day came.
>>><<<
He stood at the threshold of the office in the afternoon, interrupting her reading. Hanabi was lying on the sofa, stretching legs over the armrest, with a rather thick book in hands. She was dressed in a white, tight-fitting blouse with short sleeves and a bottle-green skirt made of thin tracksuit. She looked at him and the men behind him, carrying a huge boar's head. She was a little paler than usual, looking tired, but she smiled brightly at the sight of him, putting the book down immediately. Kaoru thought they would sit down together, tell her what had happened to him...but it looked like the outbreak stories had to wait.
- Really boss, I am absolutely amazed...and proud! - Kizaki seemed to convey emotions too theatrically again.
- As I can see quite a big trophy, so, with a pure heart, congratulations on a fruitful trip! - The woman laughed.
- Would you like a little toast to success? - he asked, walking up to her and wrapping a black curl around his finger.
- Not really, I'm falling after today. I'll go to bed. - she sighed. - But you guys celebrate! In the end you have what!
Something was wrong. Always energetic Hanabi fell from her feet? Was she really so exhausted? He decided to check it out. Entered the apartment. There was absolute darkness in it. Maybe she did fall asleep...As quietly as could, he headed for the bedroom. She lay barely covered, definitely dressed in a loose T-shirt and shorts. She didn't look asleep, so he took off jacket, slipped off tie, and as gently as possible settled directly behind, wrapping his arm around her. She turned right away so she could look at him. The silver moonlight fell through the half-shaded windows, making her eyes shine like never before.
- Honestly speaking, I expected a reward. - he muttered softly, rubbing the tip of her tiny nose with his own.
- The reward has been waiting a long time, dearest... - She whispered, smiling, then embraced his neck and moved closer to his ear. - ...I carry your baby under my heart.
>>><<<
She could excuse herself with the usual pregnancy pains, but preferred to show up, especially since it was in a good tone. Hanayama, as Akita's successor, had to appear at all business meetings and all kinds of events, including family fairs. He had to know who, with whom, why, how... And she, as an exemplary wife, wanted to support him. Besides, she knew perfectly well that there were things that easily escape her husband, so a second pair of eyes and ears would be useful twice. So she squeezed into a tasteful, single-color purple kimono with a delicate, even symbolic pattern of Sakura flowers, in order to dignify with husband. She saw that he, too, was not particularly eager to approach the subject. She suspected that all of this was just boring him until someone to knocked out showed up. Hanabi watched the surroundings, listened to learn as much as possible. She felt mediocre, but luckily the doctor took that into account in her vitamin choices, and the nausea was not as bad as could be. Thanks to this, she followed Kaoru without fear, took advantage of attractions and met new mafia women, in her opinion much more passive than she might have imagined. Oh, wives of husbands, mothers of their children. She wondered if they knew what men really did. She guessed that some of them might have lived in blissful ignorance - of their own or forced will. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Taro at the goldfish stand. She had always enjoyed watching the children try to delicately pick out the little creatures, and they swiftly eluded them.
- Stop splashing! You will wet your clothes and catch a cold! - the old man admonished.
She smiled under her breath. He seemed to like children. Akita turned out to be extremely protective with them. Before she looked back, a wreath of toddlers surrounded them. It only took one look at her husband to find out where this interest came from. One toddler watching Hanayama crush a beer can with a big paw into a ball-shaped shape for the rest to converge. She sighed, smiling half-mouth.
- Wow! Great! - a boy said. - Impossible!
- Can juice be too? - another asked him.
- There are kids who only drink juice to give him a can! - he heard in response.
- Seriously?!
In a few minutes a large group appeared around him - girls in cute kimonos, boys in jeans. Kaoru didn't look dissatisfied, perhaps quite the opposite. He took advantage of their enthusiasm and the drinks they brought. She preferred not to think about what his digestive system was going through, on the other hand, bourbon bottles were melting from the cupboards at an alarming rate. Just like the contents of the cans, which he squashed in two movements in front of the little spectators. Each time the effect was the same - a wave of delight, almost a standing ovation, and then a call for more. They didn't have to wait long for someone to get interested. Behind them appeared a guy Hanabi must have seen before, she knew the scar above his left eye...maybe the day she disarmed the bomb under Kaoru's ass? Masayuki Itomi, the third chief coordinator - just wasn't sure what. It still felt as if the layers of the hierarchy had a secret, something she didn't know. Constantly lacked some information and couldn't figure out what. Behind the tall, middle-aged man was his lovely wife in an elegant kimono, with a purse in her hands. He introduced her as Kayo. She bowed so meekly that Hanabi herself decided it would be polite to bend her neck at least. Masayuki mentioned something about Mr. Iketobi. That told her something too. Listening in all these conversations had its advantages. Now it was time to clean up this mess in the head. A moment later, he took her husband away, ordering his wife to look after the children, which she immediately agreed to. Hanayama glared at Hanabi to make her stay as well. She agreed with a gentle head shake. As soon as they were gone, she turned to the woman who looked after the children.
- Hanayama-sama... - she curtsied before her.
- Kayo-san, do you know what meeting your husband was talking about? - she asked bluntly.
- Unfortunately, he doesn't confide in me on such topics. - she replied.
She didn't sound like she was lying. At 99%, she actually didn't know. It was hardly surprising. The probability that the "standard mafia woman" knew more, seemed close to nil. Hanabi had to wait for news from her husband.
It was maybe half an hour since Kaoru left with Masayuki and she heard shots. Lots of shots. A few seconds later, Hanayama's men were with her. She had a bad feeling about it, but they wouldn't let her look. They immediately escorted her to car, to hide safely at home. There she found out that an attack on Akita had been carried out, unfortunately fruitful. Both he and the inseparable Tatsu were injured. The head of the Fujiki group in critical condition was taken to hospital. Immortal didn't survive. Kaoru disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
Hanabi went to bed, probably only for the sake of the baby, and fell asleep from ordinary fatigue. The whole next day was hanging around the apartment, unable to find a place for herself. If didn't eat, she walked around, looked out the windows, checked the phone. She was absolutely forbidden to leave the apartment. At her door, Ueda was guarding, the others were looking for Kaoru. Everyone was put in a vertical position, so that he was found as soon as possible, and Kizaki cooled the emotions among the other bosses. Finally called that they found him. Obviously none other than Chiharu. She didn't know where, because the head of the Tokkutai group had lost the phone battery before her husband's deputy found out more, but the fact was that he was found. At this news, she immediately regained strength, channeling it into supper planning, because he would most likely come back hungry as a wolf. She knew Kaoru liked homemade food, so she didn't intend to spare him the oldest spells known to mankind. Before he appeared in the threshold, staggering on his feet, leaning on Shiba's shoulder, everything was ready. Still wearing a suit and purple shirt, but no shoes. Dirty, crumpled, pale, absurdly tired.
- I found him under Mount Fuji, Hanabi-sama. - Chiharu replied, stepping back as soon as the colossus got more stable on his feet.
She had so many questions, was so worried, and the words stuck in her throat. He walked slowly over to wrap his big arms around her.
- Although...you better? - she asked softly, tucking face into his shirt.
All she heard was a dull murmur. It had to be enough for her.
- Come in the shower, and then have something decent to eat. - she said warmly, leading him to the bathroom.
The next day's phone fell from the sky. Hanayama continued to walk dull, as if he could barely see what was happening around him. Grandpa Shigeru called her, with an invitation. It stank suspiciously, but could have helped her husband. At least she hoped so.
- Kaoru, Grandpa invites us to Okinawa. - she began calmly, covering the phone with her hand. - Are you coming with me?
He just grunted again. She agreed, telling herself that if the murmur was a refusal, she would pull him out anyway.
>>><<<
He didn't really want to move anywhere, but guess it was right. He agreed just because. And for her. She shouldn't be stressed, besides, Tokyo was dangerous for a while, and he wanted to keep her safe. So if he had to go to Okinawa for it, he didn't have much of a problem. Hanabi told him that as a child, she was often on the island, a family tradition or something. He wondered if their child would also train under Soga's eye. It might be interesting. She stood on land almost like at home, to immediately pull him towards the coast and quite a beautiful forest. She had an amazing amount of energy for the state she was in. He had expected rather ubiquitous pains, nausea, cravings...she was acting quite normal. Maybe everything is ahead of them? He was completely unfamiliar with such matters. He trusted the information she shared after the doctor visited their home. According to them, the embryo, or the fetus, (he didn't see the difference ... CHILD) was developing perfectly, grew and was doing great, and the Hanabi organism was coping with it completely. She even showed him a photo. He didn't know what he saw, it looked more like a small ball than a human. He couldn't believe that someone like him or someone close would grow out of something like this, though he knew perfectly well that sooner or later it would. Just like being a father! Only he could legally call himself "adult", and in a moment a small copy of himself will call "Daddy!" after him. Despite everything, he was happy, even very much. He pushed those thoughts aside, seeing the traditional house connected to the dojo. They passed the tori gate with the school sign on it, but he didn't have time to read the name.
- There is a family temple on the property, hence the gate. - she explained, turning to face him and hugging muscular arm. - My family is quite closely related to the cult of Inari.
- Interesting place for a house... - he assessed, looking around.
It was little different from his grandfather's house. Maybe it was a little smaller. However, it was still wooden, with a properly sloped roof, and non-transparent paper-covered sliding doors, like every minka*.
- Right? Grandpa likes peace of mind. - she replied, nodding her head. - If he needs anything, behind the forest is the city center.
They had almost stopped at the entrance gate when an old man in a yukata appeared in front of them. Still gray-haired, with bright green eyes, just like his granddaughter. He smiled good-naturedly, spreading his arms.
- Finally, I can welcome you! - he laughed, then added, seeing that the young boss is looking around curiously. - What do you think of the grounds, Kaoru-san?
- Amazingly charming. - he replied evasively.
- You could live here if Hanabi would agree...
- And Yui refused? - the woman hastily snapped.
- Of course I agreed. - she heard in response.
A fairly tall woman was walking towards them from the building, though at first glance he might have mistaken her for a slightly skinny man. Long hair, tightly braided at the head, gave the impression that it had been cut at the very nape of the neck, and the almost black shirt and dark green hakama pants didn't make identification easy. Only when she came closer did he recognize one of his sisters-in-law. She nodded at the sight of him, calm as ever, cold as a rock. He didn't see her often, but each time he felt as if he was seeing the mirror image of his wife. Seemingly similar, in fact most of all the older sisters, but completely the opposite.
- Congratulations on the descendant on the way. - she said.
Hanabi fell as soon as she put her head on the pillow. Kaoru envied her immensely, he couldn't sleep, despite the fact that they spent the day quite actively. She doubled and tripled to cheer him up. Had to admit to himself that, to some extent, she even succeeded. Trying not to wake his wife, he got up to go out the back door of the room onto the internal terrace. Closed the door, then sat on the slightly squeaky wooden panels, examining the lush vegetation of the rockery with a pretty sizeable bonsai tree on top, drenched in the silvery glow of a crescent moon. He couldn't help but see Tatsu dead and Akita dying. Couldn't go beyond the fact that he was gone when he was needed...after all, if he did, it probably would have been different. Most of all, he would catch the bastards who dared to raise a hand against his family. Hanayama was glad that even though she hadn't been hurt. If a hair had fallen off her head... The fact that many people still didn't know that he was married, even though he didn't hide it at all, had its advantages. It helped that she looked more like a younger sister, as Baki and his father had already proved. It made her safer a bit. He sighed heavily, then heard the wooden panels creak again.
- Hope I'm not disturbing you, young man? - laughed the old man with a bottle and two cups in his hand. - Will you keep me company with sake?
He nodded in agreement. Maybe he should actually get a drink and go back to his seat. Forget, and at the same time remember, that the punishment should reach those he is looking for. He took the vessel, full to the brim, being stretched out in his direction, to empty it in one gulp. It smelled faintly, and he felt a solid dose of first-class alcohol in his throat.
- The last time I saw so much energy in Little Fox, was when she was a child! - Shigeru began. - I guess you guys fit together, boy.
- Where did this nickname come from? - He became interested, this time personally pouring the colorless liquid into both cups.
- My grandfather married Kitsune, who took the body of a beautiful woman for him. Or so they both said. I have never seen grandmother's tails. - He replied, laughing lightly and taking a sip. - The more likely version is this: women in our family have a unique ability to adapt to battle conditions, which is why we call them "descendants of the Kitsune".
- What about Hanabi sisters?
- Oh, they all have features of a fox, but Hanabi is the closest to the pattern, the most mixed. Hence the nickname. Each of the tails is one adaptation. Fortunately she doesn't show all nine, so I make a maximum of seven, maybe eight. The last one is related to abandoning humanity. - he replied sadly. - After all, Kitsune are two-figure demons. Both foxes and humans...
He shuddered slightly at the information. Didn't Grandpa know? Hadn't she shown a "ninth tail" before? He remembered all the times he'd seen her struggling unconscious. Affection. Absolutely inhuman, without the slightest sign of feeling or pity. If any of the two appeared, it was at the very end when she slowly regained consciousness. He wasn't sure if he should educate old Soga without her knowledge, he would sleep better without knowing.
- I heard about your grandfather Kaoru-san. - Shigeru sighed, interrupting his stream of thoughts. - I hope he will survive and soon we'll all laugh at this nasty story at the same table.

So because L’s actor in the second live-action Death Note movie occasionally pulls this face that makes him look like an older version of Toshio from the Ju-On franchise, I have at times wished for a really trippy AU in which L was actually some kind of vengeful spirit the whole time, and one way or another Watari was one of the only things keeping him from going full Curse Mode or whatever, so killing Watari kind of winds up backfiring spectacularly. At least in part because it would be funny to watch Light frantically trying to improvise his way out of this one/convince himself this is actually part of the plan. Bonus points if the shinigami somehow knew this was going to happen, but went along with it anyway because, for Rem, she figured it would be fitting, and for Ryuk, he thought it would be funny.
