Hi tamelee 💜💓 Im wanting to learn art digitally and I wonder how you can put emotion in work like you? Sometimes I feel like my OC’s are maybe bland and I want to have more in it. Like a story if you know what I mean. And can you draw iruka if you have time? 🙏🏽💓

Hi Non.e💕! Well I felt like this is the perfect time to answer this ask. I did draw Iruka already for his birthday a few days ago and planned to upload it then. And yet for some reason I have a full artwork of kid Naruto + Iruka and kid Sasuke + Itachi ready and I'm having a lot of trouble uploading these two. I can't put myself to do it and I've never experienced this before (っ- ‸ – ς) Here's a blurry version so you get the idea (I really wanted to draw a cute Naruto 🥺:

So, speaking of emotion.. hm.. I've always been really slow in uploading art, which is also why I can't take many commissions since drawing for me only really works out "if I feel like it". Which isn't really a good professional approach. But in everything I upload there is a piece of me in it. Everything. (Yes, even 🍋😂) So the emotion in the art that I work on/upload is most likely what I feel at the time or there is a message hidden. Not necessarily one that needs to be found. It's mainly for me. I'm just using these existing characters as a way to express myself. Irl I don't. I just clown around tbh.

What usually happens is that I stare at my screen for hours even if I'm not drawing, unaware that I'm making the exact face I want to draw (I'm so glad I live alone) and just keep working on it until I feel like the character portrays the emotion. It doesn't always work out, but it's still relieving in a way.

Anyway- I'm an amateur.. but this is what I personally did: Do you want to learn storytelling through emotions or through a whole painting? Because I would study facial expressions and find references, or even use your own face. If anything feels bland you can try and exaggerate the features maybe a tad bit more and experiment. Storytelling within a composition is a different thing though.

I'd get a strange fascination for storyboards and study those as, composition wise, they're used to tell a lot with just a "simple" sketch. The information needs to be clear for a whole team usually, right? That's what you're looking for. Clarity, even thumbnail sized. I'd learn contrast in color too, our eyes naturally go towards the most saturated and warmer tones and use that as an advantage. You have to decide where you want the viewers eyes to go first- second- etc. Things like these can help you tell your story in art even without characters.

He is a master in storytelling when it comes to art. You immediately look where he wants you to look. Every shape, color, tone, draws you towards those points in that exact order. It's genius. Study the masters. They know what they're doing ;___; 💕
