I don’t usually make posts like this, but I’ve been seeing a lot of anti-intellectual junk lately, and I really think we need to put the word “pretentious” up on a shelf until people learn what it actually means.

It doesn’t describe someone who likes artsy-fartsy deep meaning media. People who are pretentious are fake. They’re posers trying to be sophisticated and unique, not like other girls. They pretend to only like stuff they think will make them sound cool when they talk about it. They want to act like they know something you don’t, and they want attention for it.

By definition, if you genuinely enjoy something, you can’t be pretentious. If it resonates with you, and you analyze it, and you don’t care what people think, that’s the polar opposite, actually. If you love obscure experimental prog music, if you watch underground high concept indie films through English teacher eyes, if you spend hours in a modern art museum reading each piece as a vessel for storytelling, if your backpack’s full of poetry books that inspire you, if you play underrated games that were someone’s passion project, if you have an interest in studying the classics or the masters, you are not pretentious.

Of course, some people just don’t like some stuff, and that’s fine, but that’s not what this is about. Don’t let anti-intellectuals shame you for enjoying things just because your interests are inaccessible to them, because they refuse to be brave and put effort into critical thinking. You’re not stuck up for refusing to overlook the craft of artists.

Greta gerwig is an artist. I haven’t seen the movie yet but I know it has a deeper #message than haha cute pink! I’ve seen the summaries about the true meaning. the pinkness and popularity doesn’t negate the narritive.#though in the notes I saw a lot of tumblristas comunistas shitting on the film for being one big ad that people *fell for* which tbh is #tbh almost as anti-intellectual. don’t get me wrong they milked this film to sell hella shit but I don’t believe kids who play with dolls #are the target audience as these people claim. Barbie is a culturally iconic symbol almost archetypical of societal expectations for women #you say barbie people think unblinking perfect plastic pink girly. reminds me of the poem The Last Mojave Indian Barbie. yeah yeah you all #hate brands but this one carries undeniable significance and makes for a powerful literary device. it’s been used many times before #sorry for writing a tag essay about a film I haven’t even seen but I’m tired of internet people focusing so much on proving others wrong #that they end up oversimplifying everything just as much as the other person. god I saw people doing this to Nimona saying transphobes were #looking too deep into her character and they’re reactionary clowns for making that jump. like for once the transphobes are right. she is #trans. it’s a queer story. and irl the first people who notice queerness are the bigots who can tell you’re different. sick owns telling #them the story’s not that deep is harmful and it’s like they’re ignoring the real message on purpose. okay enough rambling hehe! thanks #barbie #nimona

#i was sooo happy printing this at work lol #i had been listening to the album on repeat and saw slime on the schedule snd RAN to my boss like #“ARE WE PRINTING FOR POLLYANNA?!?!?!?!” and she made sure i was the one to set up/print the shirts #there was another design i set up but couldn't finish the job bc it was such a big print it hurt my wrists after a few rounds #man it was so fucking cool meeting them and telling them how happy i was to print their merch #talking to myself in the tags once again lol but! gonna list bands/artists that are fun to print for #fangirled sooo bad when we printed jhariah merch a few months after i started working there #ben quad was fun too #i love all the goalkeeper prints we do.. their designs are sick #wax jaw has fun designs too i need to check them out #same with grocer #it's fun printing for the local breweries too #I'd like to think my parents would think I'm cool for printing merch n networking with musicians idk #okay i need to go to bed lol #rAMbles #am

it is completed. The matches on the far outsides will be competing first, in 24 hr polls before they move on to go against the competitors on the inner brackets.

Round 1a polls will be posted SATURDAY JULY 15 (probably like 1pm pst or something), and Round 1b polls will be posted probably a couple days after that.

Propaganda is allowed and FULLY encouraged. rip each other to shreds.

#gonna talk abt the seeding process in tags lol #ok so i didnt do formal seeding bc.... i have no idea how with this shit.#but i started by putting the 4 eps that made the cut in the 4 corners and faced them off against their own band (mostly)#then i filled the rest of the outsiders with artists who only had one release or ones that are generally less well known/liked (cough. patd #the inners were a lot tougher. im not even that happy with how all the seeding ended up but i tried to make it as fair as i possibly could #as well as tried to stick to the idea of high scorers vs low scorers and then middle scorers vs middles. Again didnt ALL work but i tried #i also am not familiar with four year strong at all so i based their seedings off of how their albums charted. hopefully its fair enough #potential 1a winners were considered when placing 1b ones in the spots where theyd face one off #i will not lie at all and say that my bias for certain albums is evident in this seeding. finally reading dance of days (thank you ohiolink and oberlin college <3) but my most consistent takeaway thus far. is oh my god. people who think punk is primarily ideological and not subcultural/musical. are so out of touch.

#three thought threads excuse it but okay.#first as much as dc punk was not political for much of its history (revolution summer/positive force nonwithstanding im talking oldschool)#i do think the structure of diy and creating an alternative subculture economy is more radical than. making an antireagan song lmao.#even if i think the result was a bit of a failure. the intention was significant! imagine a world where artists do not have to contort #themselves to majors and can be supported by an alternate network of payment and such. would be nice if the arbitrary ideas #of like 5 dollar shows and zero pr and not fighting for what your worth didnt infest that ideology but whateves #okay then also. what the fuck how did i not know the bad brains homophobia was that bad. anyway.#third thread. hilarious that dc punks were.. hesitant to work with positive force bc of its association with revolutionary communist party #lol lmao even. now that im sufficently deep into these tags i can say what all this made me think of which is that #oh my god mcr is a punk band. well theyre more than a punk band but they unequivically came up in punk. they are based in punk. their first #lbum is a posthardcore record without question. in the context of punk as a MUSICAL SUBGENRE mcr is under that umbrella #more than they are Most Other Things #mcr is punk in the outsider-opposition sense which was as defined as some poltics were for a lot of early bands #and shit like black flag which my chem drew on was not textually very political at all it was a subcultural thing #equal opposite force to The Establishment. charting your own path even if it meant fighting for it #obv though black parade barely qualifies as a punk record it was an evolution for them #(and a really interesting zigzag since many of its influences are 70s rock- the very thing og punk was reacting against!#but which now represented a past oldschool rocknroll (esp with glam))#anyyyway #my posts
