GL (manga/manhwa/manhua) Recs:
Manga:
Sukeban and Transfer Student by Fujichika
Tumblr media
Summary: Rinri Kanzaki, a naive and innocent transfer student, couldn't help but want Atsuko Nagumo, a lone-wolf delinquent, to say "cute words" to her! It's a cute and slightly embarrassing 80s-style school comedy between a transfer student x delinquent.
Review: This manga is literally so cute. Both of them are adorable. Their relationship is also very wholesome.
Status: Ongoing
Composing Spring in this Room where Cherry Blossoms Bloom by Tokuwotsumu
Tumblr media
Summary: On her first day of university, Haruki had a fateful encounter with Sakura in the lecture hall. They were attracted to each other and lived together after graduation, but suddenly they had to part ways. Sakura had disappeared from this world. Five years have passed since then, and it is the fifth cherry blossom season. Haruki, who was still in a state of grief, happened to find a diary. It was the unfinished diary written by Sakura.
Review: This was so beautifully written. The grief portrayed in this manga was very realistically written. I highly recommend this!
Status: Completed
Manhwa:
Tumblr media
Summary: Jeanne, a prostitute at address 74, took care of the fallen Janet. Jeanne wants to be friends with Janet, but Janet tries to get information out of her.
Review: I liked this a lot but I wish the author stuck to writing 13 chapters like they had originally planned because near the end everything felt a bit rushed. However, it's still a good read although I recommend keeping a box of tissues near while reading this tho.
Status: Completed
Tumblr media
Summary: Welcome to Greywoods, a beautiful mansion isolated deep in the countryside. Its main inhabitants? Viscount Rose, his daughter Lady Eileen, the housekeeper, the butler, and a new maid, Marie. As Lady Eileen and her newest (and only) companion begin to open up to each other, do their hearts follow close behind? Now, don’t mind any lingering ghosts still haunting the grounds, they’re not real! Nor are there any enduring secrets, deep-rooted betrayals, or an air of mystery... just trust me.
Review: This is an excellent read! Although Eileen and Marie's relationship developed very fast, it didn't feel forced. Their relationship was very smoothly written I'd say. There's also a supporting character, Lynda who was very well written. I do recommend checking the trigger warnings before reading this.
Status: Completed
Tumblr media
Summary: Andrew is the only daughter of the famous Grace family. She also has an incurable disease. Due to her family's high status in society, Andrew grew up with no friends save for her maid, Herta, whom she has become intensely infatuated with. Little does she know, her family is responsible for ruining Herta's life. Can Andrew break the hierarchy and be with her? Or will Herta end her suffering first...
Review: The two main leads are well written. The story itself is filled with angst. There are a few issues I have with this but I still liked it a lot. I do recommend checking the trigger warnings before reading this.
Status: Completed
Manhua:
Tumblr media
Summary: Qi went to sleep embraced by her girlfriend, Yuanzi. However, when she opened her eyes she realized that she had been transported 10 years back to the past, back when she was still in high school. While she sees this as an opportunity to save the love of her life, what she doesn't realize is that her teenage self is in her adult body, 10 years into the future, and has no clue about the life Qi has built or how precious the time she has left with Yuanzi is. No matter the time, no matter the age, their love resonates as they stand by each other's side. Will they be able to conquer fate?
Review: The plot was never dragged and the pacing was very smooth. The characters are also very cute. There were issues I had with a certain side character but other than that it was a very pleasant read.
Status: Completed
A Story Concerning Sweets by Shi Yi Er
Tumblr media
Summary: This is a story concerning sweets and two girls. One is a ghost who wanders around in the hospital, and another is a patient with a heart condition. It's cute! It's fluffy!
Review: It's cute and angsty at the same time. I recommended keeping a box of tissues near you.
Status: Completed

Note
hey I saw you on the Sukeban and Transfer Student post going round and I thought I'd give you the heads up in case you do end up working on it that there are actually 6 eng chapters released so far but the last group working on it, Some Literal Goblins, had to drop the series, so it's once again up for another group to get. best of luck with all your other projects!
Wish I had seen this a couple days ago.
Tumblr media
Going by the volume numeration tho, there's only 5 chapters translated.
Ah, wasted work.

I have too many random OCs so here’s a dumb story using some
Romeo-kun and Juliet-senpai

hi hi woohoo yippee hopping jumping clapping taking out my notes. also copy pasting a bit from my au pages
kai moeru's take on a p4 femc au!!! not only will the protagonist and Velvet Room attendant have their own counterparts, but so will Marie and Izanami because yeah whoo yeah yeah. I haven't decided on a name for her yet, so in the meantime I've been calling her "sukeban," female counterpart to "bancho."
Bancho > Sukeban
A fully fledged girl delinquent except… she’s also not. Workaholic parents who don’t give her much notice and constant school hopping due to the nature of her parents’ jobs. She is brash and has quite a potty mouth, but she is a quick witted, strong and caring leader of the Investigation Team as she pours her own soul into searching for the truth with her new friends. Her initial Persona is "Izanami (イザナミ)."
Margaret > Victor
A flirtatious glittery prick of a host who complains about not having a guest he can serve alcohol to. Always getting on Sukeban’s nerves, calling her pet names like “kitten” at every opportunity. But he is a Velvet Room attendant first, pain in the ass second. He performs his duties properly and with pride, and takes good care of Stein who recently began residing within the Velvet Room.
Marie > Stein
A boy lost in thought and with a loss of memories. He is ushered into the Velvet Room and is taken in as an apprentice. While he sits around in the stuffy room, or is being chaperoned around the nostalgic human world, he thinks about his memories while he takes his mundane thoughts, which he mumbles and… raps about them.
Izanami > Izanagi
The pretentious god who thinks about giving the ideal “life” to his people with carefully controlled fog. His facade is that of a weather reporter, regularly appearing on TV and eagerly encouraging publicity for himself. His name under his facade appears to be "Akihisa Kino ( 輝乃朗久)," Inaba's beloved weather girl "Aki." He feigned mourning for Mayumi Yamamo's passing as a fellow co-worker, despite seeing her die by her own Shadow with his own eyes.
more details of plot differences and characters and such as much as I've been able to flesh them out under cut !!! fun fact !! I thought of a possible Velvet Room attendant first before the actual femc
sukeban
Tumblr media
I'll be honest, I managed to flesh out their characters a bit better by thinking of pq2 crossover scenarios. In fact I have ideas for a femc Q SOTL and a Q2 NCL + Sukeban edition but I'll put that aside for another day 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️
Sukeban never really wanted to be a delinquent. She just fell into society's gimmicks and decided to play the role assigned to her. Transfer student with a history of constantly changing schools, coming late on her first day and most other days, being occasionally grumpy and brash because of the lack of sleep, unable to make friends or connections because of her circumstance having her habitually be as unapproachable as possible.
Her parents aren't around as often and wasn't ever there to support her at school. Festivals? Class performances? No, they had a business trip, an important meeting, stuck with clients. She wouldn't even want to bother them with what she's doing at school. Not like they need to.
Staying up as late as she wants because there wasn't anyone there to actively discipline her out of love and having to get used to the new house for the month, although there wasn't much to do than sulk around thinking about the next move which could happen at any time. Thinking her archery club teammates would get mad at her for leaving after they've applied her into competitions, so she never bothered to enter after one experience.
Then she was really being confused for a delinquent for how disheveled she looked, even asked by long skirt, bleached haired girls what her school was.
She learned how to fight for herself, instinctively hold any long pole like objects like bats, hope her uniform shoes hold up every walk into town, learn the lingo and get that same accent just so people could get the picture right away. Although with most encounters with normal people, she just hopes intimidating them enough with the image she's built would scare them off. Avoiding her parents around the house not saying a word to one another.
They're out for overseas work, meaning she's booted back to her mother's hometown to stay with her uncle and cousin for a year.
Halted at the front of the train station by a peppy looking weather reporter, giving her a brief interview as a "city girl" and getting her hand shaken. Soon after, she meets her uncle and cousin. Now stopping at a gas station to see this... wandering boy with a somewhat listless expression hand her a memo she dropped. The graphic tee and cargo pants was... a statement
Suddenly she's stuck in the middle of a murder mystery, being able to hop into televisions that could kill people and promise her classmate she'll help the cause to stop people from dying. Now there's this thing she can summon, a "Persona," monkey bear mascot said—why was it rotting and beautiful in two different halves of itself? That's her? ... that's pretty metal
She's awake in the blue room again. With the man and the long nose again. With the freak of nature host calling her "kitten" like she thought she avoided every red light district just so she wouldn't meet pricks like this ever in her life. Now that boy from last time has a stupid hat and silly bag—a pair of headphones too? He's intertwined with her fate, they say. What fate? To get through a year in this backwater city? To solve the mystery plaguing this town? What'll he do to help, give him a mixtape of middle school level tunes he made himself?
Getting through that year was something. Actually getting into clubs again. Skip class and carry bags for a girl. Get good pay from part time jobs. Becoming friends with a fox and have some faith in shrine prayers. Got a scooter licence. Actually learn how to cook for her little cousin's sake. The deliveryman who'd hand her the Tanaka special goods she'd call to buy was behind the kidnappings. Her uncle's partner was behind the killings and cat and mouse game she got to beat up as liberally as she wanted. Her friend who almost killed himself was actually god who was actually the weather reporter on TV almost every broadcast then she returned a whole world into the fogless paraside state it was. and that host wasn't actually all that bad a freaky prick he's actually really nice.
okay!!!! not proofreading this i gotta stop putting effort into bullshit it becomes plot (I dont) more miscellaneous stuff I guess???
Sukeban isn't as good a cook as Bancho so she actually learns throughout the year to make nice bento (and be at least a bit better than the other girls concocting literal poison). She does archery, but would rather not use it in the TV world or anything violent for that matter, she respects the art. Her dynamic with Kanji is a fun brain exercise. Also one time they called themselves "Investigation Gang" instead of "Team" while Yosuke starts imagining something silly like they all look like goons but Kanji looks the same sorry Kanji </3 She was about to finally snap when she learned Vic almost named Stein "Frank" like that would've been the last straw.
Victor hmmm. Unlike Margaret who I was personally really felt a bit uncomfortable with the flirting and subtext in her speech sometimes playing as a highschool protagonist and seeing this individual as a grown woman, he takes it up a notch and kinda makes it obvious it's superficial just to joke around and get reactions out of Sukeban, to play his "role" as a silly host as "Club Velvet" (inspired by what Elizabeth talked about a few times). He's really just a good guy and does his job as attendant well. He'll be sophisticated when he needs to but in the meantime he likes being over the top to hear sukeban groan or try to hit him. He calls her "babygirl" when he's the babygirl in the room. They have this older brother younger sister kind of dynamic I like to think. Stein is literally just there when shit goes down. The IT first see him in Stein's tomb after he found it and brought them there. They ask sukeban who this glitzy looking city boy host is and she just calls him a slur. He can also make nice cocktails (that humans can't actually consume) and stacks champagne towers when Igor isn't around. Vic and Margaret hate each other they hope the other would just get out. get out of the velvet room I dont want to see your face because if we fought it'd cause the end of the world. <- mostly Margaret.
Stein HAHA Stiney boy. I'll admit I'm the one who named him "Frank" first. sorry. He's just as blunt as Marie but he's less tsundere and more... deadass (?) idk how to explain how I imagine him actually but in general he's like bancho. he doesn't really have strong reactions to things but he sure has opinions. Gotta give him some sort of unlikeable fandom trait like Marie's tsundere mary sue ass or whatever people complained about. Instead of writing poems, he just records some Dr. Seuss level rhymes about his memories. Contrast to Marie reciting poems in her tomb and being poetic and gloomy, Stein would rap his bars and get a little riled up trying to tell sukeban and the IT to leave. Unlike Margaret who intentionally leaves her poems out for people to see, Stein leaving tapes is a lot more of a genuine blunder while even Vic is curious as to what he recorded. Stein isn't too embarrassed about it, either he wouldn't notice you've listened to it and gets it back, or he knows and asks "how was it" maybe.
IZANAGI /vine boom/ gigi. gets his gay little ass. going teehee I'm everyone's girl everyone knows me I'm correct about the weather always because I am the weather. complaining like "zamn guys the weather's gna be rain again this week :/// this sucks yknow it's so shitty nowadays </////3"<- behind the shitty weather. Besides iznmi being this "mother knows best" situation, Izanagi's more like "condescending man over men high and mighty whatever the hell fuck you I'm god." His realm isn't Yomotsu Hirasaka, it's like "Hollow Forest But Like For Real This Time." It's the forest the TV world was, but all monochrome and superficial and forced. This is the "life" Izanagi thinks is best for people, nothing to see when everything's just veiled in the fog. The forest has been hollowed of life. When he's defeated, his reporter facade would be completely forgotten by the normal folk. Like "Aki" never existed in this reality. ever.
mini pq ideas as bonus. Stein and Marie would be friends. Margaret and Victor just see each other again and it's usually Margaret going off when Vic just breathes. Although he does get along well with Elizabeth and keeps trying to coach Theo to step up for himself and stop being a doormat. Second eldest kind of things. Sukeban 🤝 Hamuko our friends are from a different world who dont know us but know someone else who has the same role as us in their world. oh oh Vic's booth in the cultural festival is like a mini host club booth . there's a little disco ball there and a couch pushed inside with kid friendly drinks on the table he'd make little cocktails out of. give those highschoolers the "minor's host club experience." sukeban would just threaten to report him for unauthorised booth set up in her school. he also knows like every terrible cheesy pick up line out there. for fun.

More GL manga recs:
Tumblr media
Summary: Aya is a high school student who is captivated by the mysterious "Onii-san" who works at a CD store. The real "Onii-san" is actually Mitsuki, a girl in her class with whom she had never spoken to before.
Review: This is a very cute read!!! The story doesn't drag out any drama. When I first started reading this, I was afraid it'd drag the secret of Mitsuki being the "Onii-san" but it doesn't. It's very well paced while also being a slow burn. They're both very well written.
Status: Ongoing
Tumblr media
Summary: Bubbly, energetic first-year high school student Himari falls head over heels for her senpai Yori after hearing her band perform on the first day of school. Himari tells Yori she just loves her, and to Himari's surprise, Yori says she loves Himari back! But when Himari realizes that she and her senpai are feeling two different kinds of love, she begins to ask herself what "love" really means...
Summary: They're both so adorable!!! I love their relationship sm. There's a lot of other wlw relationships in this manga so that's a plus point. There's also some angst here and there. It also has an anime adaptation coming out next year!
Status: Ongoing
Tumblr media
Summary: England, the early 1900s. Alice, a young noblewoman, has a Japanese maid named Hanako working in her household. The two have a fairly typical relationship…until the day Alice begs Hanako to kill her. As Hanako tries to figure out why her mistress would make such a terrible request, she and Alice grow closer until an entirely new feeling begins to blossom between them.
Review: The summary doesn't really do justice to the manga's plot but I don't want to say much because I'll mistakenly give out spoilers so I'll just say it's angsty so prepare yourself for that. Both of the characters and the relationship between them are very well written.
Status: Completed
Okay this isn't a manga, it's a manhua(chinese comic). I haven't read enough GL manhua to make a list about it so I'm putting it here. This manhua is called Tamen de Gushi. I think the English translation of the story name is called "Their Story"/ "SQ begin w/your name"
Tumblr media
Summary: The funny romantic story of how Qiu Tong and Sun Jing met and fell in love.
Review: It was one of my first GLs so it has a very special place in my heart. I laughed a lot while reading this. It's mostly on the comedy side. Qiu Tong and Sun Jing's relationship is so so adorable. The side characters in this story are also lovable. The characters in this feel very relatable. Unfortunately due to censorship in China the author had been told to remove the confession scene of the main characters in the physical copies and the author rejected to do that. Because of this, the manhua doesn't have proper chapters anymore but the author still does post little snippets of their life together on weibo and twitter. However there's still 200+ chapters of wholesomeness so please do give it a read!

The shittiest family reunion in the history of ever: chapter 6
This was supposed to be the chapter where Holly kicks Polnareff’s ass, but I changed plans at the last second. I also sprinkled in some soft Jotaro/Kakyoin content because this fic is nothing if not self-indulgent. And including Bandanaboi’s ‘Jotaro is accidentally a banchou’ idea.
Jotaro quickly made his way out of the classroom, making his way through the sea of students with Kakyoin not far behind him, holding hands and making sure that he wouldn’t lose the redhead. Kakyoin simply followed him, visibly uncomfortable with all the attention he had gained as ‘the new transfer student with red hair’.
Jotaro slowed down as they came outside, slowing down so Kakyoin could stand next to him and getting his phone out. The redhead stood close, reading the text messages between the taller boy and his mother. “What’s Kitahara?” He asked, turning his head toward Jotaro.
He shrugged, putting his phone back in his back pocket. “She’s talking about a family sushi restaurant. It’s not right next to our street, but you can easily walk there. And beside their sushi, they also make ramen, kaisendon, udon, and kare raisu. I don’t eat the kare raisu I think it tastes like shit, but the sushis are good, the rest is okay, and apparently I have a ‘difficult palate’.” He then did air quotes to emphasize his point, and Kakyoin snorted.
“Oi, Kujo!” The two boys turned toward the voice, seeing a bunch of other students come toward them, all looking like delinquents.
Jotaro groaned, and Kakyoin turned toward him. “You know them?”
“Yeah. They’re a bunch of punks I helped win a fight once, and now they won’t leave me alone. Come on, let’s go-” Jotaro had the time to grab Kakyoin’s hand and turn away, the redhead in tow, before a guy with way two many ear piercings was next to Kakyoin with a hand on Jotaro’s shoulder.
“How ya doin’, Kujo?” He asked. Kakyoin heard Jotaro take a deep breath, his shoulders rising with it, followed by a hiss of ‘five-foot rule, Sugawara’, and the boy’s hand shot off his shoulder, taking a few steps back as Jotaro turned his head toward the group.
“What.” He finally said, and a small girl with bleach blond walked up. The face-mask covering the lower part of her face, the dark eyeshadow around her eyes and the very long-skirt reminded Kakyoin of old-style sukebans. “The punks from Karasuno are starting to act up again. What do we do?”
Jotaro narrowed his eyes. “Are they harassing anyone from school? And is Noguchi back on his bullshit?”
“No, and no.” The small girl answered.
“Then don’t do anything. If they come anywhere near the school, you guys can handle it. If Noguchi comes back with re-enforcement, don’t try anything and come get me as fast as possible. Got it, Sakurai?”
The girl groaned. “It’d be easier to ‘get you’ if you actually gave one of us your phone number!”
“Fuck off!”
“Hum, excuse me?” Kakyoin suddenly said, gaining the attention of the small group. “I’m currently living with Jotaro-san. If you have a message you want to relay to him, I could probably help.” He then got out his own phone, pointing at it as if to emphasize his point.
The group looked at him as if he had grown a second head. “And who are you supposed to be?” A guy with a pompadour and bandage over one of his eyes asked, and Kakyoin nearly dropped his phone in surprise.
It was the guy he had puppeted the nurse to stab in the eye on his first day, back when he was being mind-controlled.
“... Kakyoin Noriaki. I’m new.” He finally answered in a small voice, looking to the ground as he felt shame well up. He looked up at Jotaro as he felt the taller boy squeeze his hand.
“If any of you know what’s good for you, you’ll leave Kakyoin-kun out of this shit.” He hissed, looming over the group of teenagers. The only one who didn’t back down was the diminutive blond (Sakurai, her name was Sakurai), who simply nodded and got her notebook out, turning toward the redhead.
“Alright, but I still need to be able to contact you fast. Kakyoin?” The redhead raised his head, and after exchanging numbers with Sakurai, the two boys parted way with the group of thugs.
Jotaro pulled his hat over his face. “Yare yare daze...”
Kakyoin looked up at him, lifting an eyebrow. “Didn’t know you were in a gang.”
“I’m not.”
“They seemed pretty convinced you were in charge.”
“If I don’t help them beat up the delinquents from the other schools, they always end up coming after me. If I help them, they both leave me alone, and I get to punch out assholes.” Jotaro explained, Kakyoin nodding slowly.
“What’s the deal with this Noguchi person?” He asked, tilting his head. Jotaro groaned.
“My bully until I snapped in 2nd grade and started beating up people. We regularly had fist fights until 9th grade, and then he asked his parents to put him in a different school because I ended up putting a teacher in the hospital for being a creep. He still tries to harass me sometimes, and ” Kakyoin blinked in surprise.
“You put a teacher in the hospital?”
“I put several teachers in the hospital. Some of them are still recovering.” Jotaro told him, shrugging nonchalantly. “I hate people who try to use the weak for their own gain. My dad made sure to teach me that.”
-
“Alright, so we’ll have the usual family-size plate of sushi, with a bowl of ramen on the side for my brother.” Holly told the waitress, who nodded before walking off. Holly turned toward Jotaro. “Maybe you could-”
“No.”
“You didn’t even let me finish!”
“I’m not going to pay for that one time I ordered kare raisu. It tasted like shit anyway.”
“It’s basic decency and not going against the law!”
“It was bad and they should feel bad for serving it!”
“So... uh... Kujo-san.” Kakyoin started, turning toward Sadao and trying to avoid the argument. “You’re a musician?”
Sadao blinked. “Uh... yeah. Pianist and song writer, but I can also play the guitar and drums.”
“Are you a solo artist?”
“No, me and my group have been together for... over twenty years, now that I think about it.”
“Uh.” Joey noted, joining the conversation. “You’ve been with your group for longer than you’ve been married to my sister.”
“Your group has also stayed together for longer than the Beatles.” Kakyoin noted, and Sadao laughed nervously.
“Yes, well... we’re practically partners in crime at this point. And we take breaks when we need to.” He noted. “We... used to be pretty infamous in our first few years. Shoko’s change from teen idol to jazz singer did ripples, and Yuichi and Kaede did not know how to stay out of trouble. Add to that our difficulties with agents...”
“What difficulties with agents?” Jotaro asked his father, turning toward him with a confused expression. “They all- all three of them- you guys always end up with cocaine addicts for agents, somehow!”
“Jotaro, being addicted to drugs isn’t a moral failing on their part.” Holly told her son, and Sadao nodded in agreement.
“No, but treating us like producing music is the only thing we’re good at is.” Sadao hissed. “Personally, I couldn’t be happier to never see these fuckers ever again.”
“You’re... surprisingly amoral.” Kakyoin noted, and the shorter man shrugged.
“I’ve been told that.” The discussion ended as their sushi and ramen was brought to the table, everyone thanking the waiter (Joey slightly behind the other four) before they started digging in.
“Anyway, Jotaro.” Holly piped up, turning toward her son. “Anything new happening at school?” The teenager shook his head between stuffing two sushis in his mouth.
“Any girlfriend?” Joey asked teasingly. Jotaro rolled his eyes. “A boyfriend, then?”
Jotaro shook his head, swallowing his bite. “I don’t. I’m not...”
“Jotaro, I’m sure we told you before, but your father and I don’t care whether or not you like boys instead of girls-”
“It’s not that.” The teen cut his mother off, shaking his head. “Can we talk about it at home? When we’re not in public?”
“Of course.” Holly reassured him, and the group resumed with eating their food, this time in silence.
About half-way through the dinner, a man with tall with hair and blue eyes approached them. “Excusez-moi,” He started, “j’ai besoin d’aide avec le menu, et je me demandais si vous pouviez m’aider?” Everyone looked at each other with confusion in their eyes, trying to decipher what the strange man had just said.
Holly finally took the reins. “Sorry, I didn’t understand... do you speak English?”
“Right! My apologies, mademoiselle, I didn’t realize.” The man excused himself with a smile that was just forced enough to put Kakyoin on edge. “I was asking if you could help me with the menu?”
“Literally the only good thing this restaurant serves is sushi, how difficult can it be read the menu- what?” Jotaro turned toward Kakyoin, who had put a hand on his shoulder. The redhead shook his head, a frown on his face.
“I have a bad feeling about this guy, like I saw him back when I... wasn’t myself. Just stay back, and be ready to call out your Stand.” The redhead muttered to him. Jotaro’s eyes widened, before nodding gravely as his mother invented the stranger to sit down at their table.
“My my, what a lovely little group we have here!” The man started. “Family, I suppose?”
“Why, yes! Well, beside Kakyoin-kun, he’s my son’s friend.” Holly declared cheerfully as said friend grabbed a napkin, cutting a strip of it with a knife he got out from his pocket. She blinked. “Kakyoin-kun, what are you doing?”
The redhead blinked, before smiling awkwardly. “Don’t worry, Ho- Seiko-san,” he remembered in the nick of time she liked to be called a different name in public. “Just making some origami.”
“Alright! Tell me when you’re finished, please?” Holly asked, and Kakyoin nodded. He quickly folded the paper, the discussions between the rst of the table’s occupants fading to background noises. If this guy really is on Dio’s side, then he won’t resist...
“Aaaaand ta-da~” Kakyoin exclaimed, showing off the small origami star to everyone at the table. Impressed sounds came up for everyone, Holly taking the star and passing it around.
“You did this with a napkin?” Sadao asked as the star ended up in his hand, an inquisitive expression on his face. Kakyoin nodded, and the older man flashed him a surprisingly cute smile. “You’ve got some talent, then.” The teenager blushed at the praise, but quickly snapped out of it as the paper was passed to the stranger. Moment of truth.
“Indeed, this is impressive!” He started, slowly lifting the little paper star to his neck. “You know... I know someone with a mark shaped just like that on the back of his neck...”
Called it.
“STAND BACK, HE’S AN ENEMY STAND USER!” Kakyoin yelled, summoning Hierophant in a shower of watery green sparkles. Jotaro and Joey followed suit, the purple warrior appearing in a burst of stardust and a being with multiple fanged mouth in what looked like a sound’s wavelength.
At the same time, a strange knight-like being shimmered into existence next to the stranger, who clapped as if he was congratulating Kakyoin. “Bravo! How did you guess I was after them?”
The redhead’s mouth turned into a snarl, a watery hiss coming from Hierophant. “With DIO parading around naked every chances he gets, it’s kind of hard not to notice the literal tattoo on his ne-”
“Birth mark.” Joey suddenly said, his head turned toward Kakyoin with his eyes round like saucers. “It’s a birthmark, it’s not his, and we’re gonna have to talk about that later.”
“Oh? Awfully bold of you to assume there’s gonna be a later, Monsieur Joestar.” The stranger mocked Joey. A growl built up in the taller man’s throat, echoed and amplified by his Stand’s.
“Alright, alright, everyone calm down.” Holly called out, getting up and gesturing with her hands. “Let’s not fight inside of the restaurant. Causing a scene is the last thing we want. Kakyoin-kun?” She turned toward the redhead with an unusual harsh expression. When she saw the redhead flinch back in surprise, it softened. “We’ll talk about this... Dio person later, alright?”
“... Alright.”
“As for you,” the only woman in their group turned backtoward the stranger, glaring.”What is your name?”
“Why, it’s Jean-Pierre Polnareff!” He answered.
Holly nodded, a forced smile appearing on her face as she folded her hands, slowly making her way to Polnareff. “Well then, Polnareff-san, I am Holly Kujo. And I-” She suddenly cracked her knuckles, yellow light and darks vines wrapping around her hands and forearms. “Will be your opponent.”

Rewatching Kill la Kill is making me wanna also check out sukeban deka and the Blazing Transfer Student manga (already watched the OVA) since I know those were two of the biggest inspirations for it.

Things About: Ryuko Matoi
✄ For a newspaper ad, Kill la Kill scriptwriter Kazuki Nakashima wrote a short introduction for Ryuko from Ryuko’s perspective. In the introduction, Ryuko reveals that she’s been alone for as long as she can remember and “only [she] could protect [herself].” She then talks about Senketsu, noting that it’s strange that she’s wearing him (perhaps especially because she’s been alone so long and has never particularly trusted anyone else?), but finishes by saying that how Senketsu makes her look doesn’t matter so long as she comes out a winner: “That’s the spirit of Ryuko Matoi.”
✄ Ryuko is very much depicted as a Japanese delinquent (and she describes herself accordingly in episode 8). Her initial outfit and Senketsu are clearly modeled after sukeban, “girl boss,” a term used to describe the culture of the rebellious schoolgirl gangs that began appearing in Japan in the 1960s and 1970s. These all-girl groups would modify their school uniforms, wearing Converse sneakers, cutting their blouses short, and so on. Interestingly, even prior to Kill la Kill, when Ryuko more resembles a “typical” high school girl, she still wears different-colored socks than the other girls, much like sukeban would.
Tumblr media
✄ Ryuko’s appearance also takes some cues from Sukeban Deka, a series from which Kill la Kill draws a ton of inspiration from (perhaps most obviously, the first ending sequence of the series is a straight-up homage to a Sukeban Deka ending sequence). Particularly, take note of the red glove.
Tumblr media
✄ Ryuko’s initial jacket, too, is associated with rebellion and delinquency. The jacket is known as a sukajan, which was initially a specially-embroidered “souvenir jacket” that American soldiers brought home from Japan after World War II. However, in the 1960s, the sukajan became a symbol of defiance, representing a rebellion against the growing popularity of the American “preppy” styles in Japan. Sukajan were then connected with gangs and criminals.

✄ Even Ryuko’s speech is indicative of her delinquency and rebellious attitude. Ryuko (I believe) uses ヤンキー語文法 (yankii (yankee) speech), a crude, disrespectful manner of speaking (which the English dub tries to convey with Ryuko’s considerable potty mouth, her tendency to cut the “g’s” off her verbs, her usage of words like “ain’t,” etc.) Here is an excellent discussion of yankii speech (and its similarities/differences to yakuza speech), which also references this blog post here that delves further into yankii speech.
✄ However, Ryuko is also depicted rather sweetly even at the start. In the first episode, she steals a delivery bike to make an escape, which is fitting of a delinquent. Later in the episode, though, she returns the bike back to where she’d taken it with a note reading, “My deepest apologies for borrowing without permission.”

✄ The “JK2″ sticker on Ryuko’s guitar case is meant to say that she’s in her second year of high school. As Japanese high schools begin at the tenth grade, Ryuko is then an eleventh grader (an American junior), and she still has one year of high school left. As revealed in the OVA, Ryuko (and Mako) will attend Rinne-Dou High School in Kanagawa for that last year. (Interestingly, Gamagoori attended Rinne-Dou Junior High before transferring to Honnouji Academy.)
Tumblr media
✄ The other sticker on Ryuko’s guitar case is of Kuri-chan, the main character of a classic, 4-panel manga series of the same name. Kuri-chan is apparently Ryuko’s favorite mascot character.
✄ At the Complete Script Book Event in 2014, it’s revealed that Ryuko doesn’t go to university after graduating from high school, getting a job immediately upon graduation instead. It’s said that “it’d suit [Ryuko] to be a babysitter or something like that” because she “probably can’t do jobs that force her to work with customers, but she is good with kids.”
✄ In episode 7, when Ryuko throws her bath bucket at the Mankanshokus, you can see that she uses Timotei shampoo (and rinse).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
✄ In episode 6, Ryuko is shown brushing her teeth with a bunny toothbrush. The Kill la Kill artbook SUSHIO CLUB LOVE LOVE KLKL has a page dedicated to the “Toothbrushes of the Mankanshoku Family” that includes illustrations of Ryuko, Mako, and Mataro’s toothbrushes. (Ryuko’s is the bunny, Mataro’s is the eyepatch cat, and Mako’s is the bear (?))
Tumblr media
✄ By episode 5, Ryuko is shown using a personalized bowl with her name on it while eating dinner at the Mankanshoku’s.
Tumblr media
✄ At Anime Expo 2014′s Kill la Kill panel (6th post from the top), it’s revealed that from what Ryuko saw of her father’s killer, she deduced that the killer had to be a high school student of around 17. As such, Ryuko spent six months going from high school to high school before finally getting to Honnouji Academy.
✄ The series suggests that Ryuko becomes so convinced that Satsuki killed her father that she reworks her memories to change the Nui-like silhouette she remembers to a figure that more resembles Satsuki instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
✄ As a series that loves wordplay and puns, Ryuko’s name is surely filled with meaning. Folks who know much more than me have written about this, so I’ll point to this post and this post that discuss some Ryuko name meanings. I will say, though, that one of the most prominent meanings I see behind Ryuko’s name is “abandoned child” (which no doubt refers to how Ragyo literally threw Ryuko away), since the 流 (ryuu) of Ryuko’s name is a kanji that represents ideas of “washing away” and “forfeiting.” (And the 子 (ko) represents “child.”) That said, though, it was explained at the Connichi Kill la Kill panel in 2014 that “Before my body is dry” is Ryuko’s theme because the kanji 流 (ryuu) represents “fluid” and 子 (ko) represents “child” and Ryuko “is a child who is easily influenced by others and thus loses her way quickly.”
✄ Though Ryuko is widely understood as a big lemon eater, she’s actually only depicted with lemons three times within the series and in official, non-concept art (as far as I’m aware): as a part of her introduction in episode 1, in the first opening sequence, and on CD art for the first volume.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
✄ In contrast, Ryuko is shown eating/with croquettes many, many times throughout the series (episodes 2, 5, 7, 22), and the disc art for the final volume (9) even depicts her holding up a croquette.
Tumblr media
✄ In fact, as revealed at the Complete Script Book Event in 2014, Ryuko’s favorite food is actually gameni, a dish of chicken and vegetables.
✄ That same event also revealed that Ryuko’s least favorite food is konnyaku, “because it reminds her of Uzu,” whose family owns a konnyaku business (and who is kind of obsessed with konnyaku himself). Funnily enough, though, Ryuko seems to enjoy eating konnyaku in the second Drama CD.
✄ In the first Drama CD, Ryuko claims that she’s excellent at cramming, but when it comes to cramming for a big group exam coming up at Honnouji Academy, she ends up sleeping for nearly a week in the library instead of studying. Listen to her dramatic apology to her teammates from about 3:47 - 4:00 here.
✄ The first Drama CD also features Ryuko “correctly” understanding that Satsuki’s eyebrows aren’t truly thick.
✄ In Track 3 of the second Drama CD, Ryuko and Senketsu make a daring escape through Guts’s butt.
✄ The third Drama CD features a bizarre plot where a sentient Life Fiber bug, Minomushi, creates a white T-shirt body for himself that Mako finds. Minomushi then drains Mako’s energy, transferring her consciousness into his T-shirt body (which Mako can then control). (I think.) (Yes, Kill la Kill is batshit.) The Mako/Minomushi T-shirt proceeds to attach itself to the Elite Four, resulting in a bunch more batshit scenarios where Mako speaks through the Elite’s voices. When Mako speaks through Uzu, Ryuko gets super creeped out when “Uzu” tries to treat her like Mako would, dodging “Uzu’s” hug and telling “Uzu” to not call her “Ryuko-chan.”
✄ In the fourth Drama CD, which takes place immediately after Ryuko learns of her Life Fibers and her relation to Ragyo, she falls unconscious desperately trying to convince herself that she’s human.
✄ The lyrics for many of Kill la Kill’s vocal pieces suggest that they are about Ryuko. Though nothing has been officially confirmed (as far as I am aware), it seems clear that “Before my body is dry” is a duet between Ryuko and Senketsu, “Till I Die” and “Suck your blood” are songs from Senketsu to Ryuko, “I want to know” is from Isshin to Ryuko, and “New World Symphony” and “Light your heart up” are from Mako to Ryuko. I’ve also heard conflicting information that “Ambiguous,” the show’s second opening, is either entirely from Satsuki to Ryuko or half Ryuko to Senketsu and half Satsuki to Ryuko, and I’d make a case that “Sirius,” the first opening song, is one from Ryuko to Senketsu. The first ending song, “Sorry, I Can’t be a Good Child,” I would also argue to be from Ryuko’s perspective.
✄ On the disc art for volume 8, Mako is shown pushing Ryuko and Satsuki together (perhaps because Ryuko is shy and needs a little help to be sisterly with Satsuki?)
Tumblr media
✄ Akira Amemiya’s illustration of Ryuko and Senketsu having fun at the beach (which first appeared in the 49th issue of Nyantype magazine in late 2013) later became two official cards for the Kill la Kill card game and a figurine, which might maybe imply that “Senketsu’s Date with Ryuko” is a canon event.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
✄ Similarly, there is a plethora of animator art featuring Ryuko that isn’t officially canon to her character but is still fun to consider. For instance, character designer/animator Sushio draws quite a bit of post-series Ryuko/Mako, animator Kengo Saito once created a comic in which Ryuko works part-time at a clothing store, and something that never fails to get my heart aching is Sushio’s depiction of little Ryuko celebrating a happy Christmas with her father.
