I’m rewatching Star Trek 2009 because it’s on Netflix.
If you’ve been with me for the long haul, you might know I had a Star Trek related username, which iirc was victor-victor-2.
I’m very fond of this movie! I named my cat Tiberius. I love the soundtrack. But my kids have been monopolizing the Netflix for a while so I haven’t had a rewatch in a while.
My thoughts:
- Leonard Nimoy is wonderful as Spock!Prime and I miss him terribly.
- It is kind of annoying how most of the female characters are treated: Kirk’s mom is giving birth to tug at female viewers’ heartstrings, (JJ Abrams admits this in the dvd extras but it bothered me less before) Spock’s mom dies, Uhura and her hot green roommate are eye candy, and/or Uhura is mostly there to look sympathetic at Spock.
-Bruce Greenwood is so great as Captain Pike. He has this deadpan cowboy feel.
- rest in peace, Anton Yelchin
- Chris Pine’s eyes are still the bluest
- I miss the dvd extras lol
I still love this movie a lot, it’s possible I’m just slightly less dazzled by it enough to give it a critical watch. Yknow. 13 years later.

thinking that maybe movies just weren't rly the way to ~expand aos. i think the 2009 movie remains a great entrance into star trek lore, and i think it's a pretty good movie ((which is not to say it has no problems bc i have many many issues with it too but also u kno i love it)). but also i rly think the interpersonal relationships among kirk and spock and mccoy and the rest of the bridge crew need more time and space to breathe, and to develop into smth meaningful.
i think this manifested in its entirety in stid. u expect me to believe that the kirk/spock dynamic has grown enuf to the point where they would sacrifice and risk like that for each other? we the audience haven't seen any of that!! it just feels hollow!!
it's not news that stid was riding the coattails of wrath of khan. but they couldn't even be assed to like. make stid be able to stand on its own emotionally? the warp core scene in stid only hits bc of wrath of khan. but the same scene in wrath of khan hits bc of the years and years of development that their relationship underwent.
in stid spock says "because you are my friend" but are they friends??? are kirk and spock friends in aos?? we see NO DEVELOPMENT of their relationship to get to that point. and thay's such a heckin shame. this is one of the most dynamic and interesting relationships in the history of television media and we get CRUMBS.
just. what a shame. what a loss.

hello once again to my handful of active followers. big news which is that I finished a jim/bones fic I started writing in, and I can't stress this enough, 2014. I find fic writing very difficult psychologically because I get so blorbo insane about it I have to type in 5pt font, so I just wrote this on and off for ten years, which is very normal. it's academy era and ends just as stxi is really beginning.

I do.#also chris pine's dumptruck ass features so heavily#and the like driving force of the movie is spock and kirk#I am. ONLY HUMAN.#what am I supposed to do?? not have a good time?????#did you HEAR mr. giacchino's pieces???#could it have used less sexism and unnecessary action sequences? that's what the fast forward button is for baby#my best friend leonard nimoy is there. it's a perfect movie.

Aww, thank you for dropping this off in my askbox! Also oh god, I have so many favorite fics that I wrote, how will I ever choose just five? Anyway, these are arguably my favorite five fics that I wrote.
We Are Pilots (Tron Legacy, Sam/Tron, 90k words) changed my life. I answered a Tron Kink Meme fill with the kind of insane fervor that I later felt when writing another fic on this short list, and the response was phenomenal and overwhelming. This fic was the confidence booster of a lifetime and made me feel that actually, I am capable of writing stories on an epic scale. This fic went through several full rewrites and the final one is my favorite because this was where I really learned to let a story breathe and to make the environment as immersive as possible.
Wishing Well (Captain America: The First Avenger, 10k words) was a capkinkmeme fill (I was really big on LJ anon kink memes and I miss those so much for the unhinged communal vibes) and I love this short tragic tale of all the love that couldn't be. If I need something sad and cathartic, I read this fic. I need to feel the tragedy. I committed so hard to the bit that I deleted a fourth chapter set during Iron Man 2 and replaced it with a ficmix playlist.
born in a thunderstorm (Star Trek AOS/Guardians of the Galaxy/Thor Ragnarok/Captain Mavel, Kirk/McCoy, 68k) is the most unhinged thing I thought up since I was a middle schooler daydreaming a crossover of a bunch of Saturday morning cartoons and interestingly dubbed anime, and since I was a high schooler who went all out on a Kingdom Hearts fic by printing the screenplays for several Disney movies so that I can mimic the actual game as closely as possible. To think that this is the STXI fic I ended up writing after years of wanting to and never doing so out of fear I'd fuck up and get gatekept out of Star Trek.
Sweather Weather (Star Wars, Din/Luke, 22k) won the fight with Gravity Well because fall is here and the cozy vibes are strong in this one. Years back, I tried to write a cozy vibes fic and flamed out because I was a fool and didn't stick to the "slice of life" mentality. Anyway, this is my slice of life/cozy vibes fic and I adore it.
The Storm (Star Wars, Din/Luke, 45k) is the story I wrote in a fever dream, fueled by the song "Dangerous Dreams" by Lebrock, and my life has not been the same since then. This story is still so vivid to me. I still think about the claustrophic setting, the old stone temple on a forgotten world ravaged by weeks-long thunderstorms, and how that forged a curiosity and connection between two people whose cultures and ways of life were destroyed by the Empire yet still survived. I still think about this fic the way I think about stories that just seared themselves into my brain and won't go away (like the other fics on this list, Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy, and Andor). It's all fucking insane. How the fuck did I write that?
Anyway, appreciate getting this ask! Now back to writing the next chapter of the 4th story of the series spun out of The Storm.
