Martlet redesign DONE! With a Moray on the side!
Martlet and Moray, roommates in UTG, both work at Moray's parents big shop in Snowdin: The Stoneside Shoppe! Moray usually works the register while Martlet handles most of the deliveries and, to help out and improve her (already fine) reputation, tries to advertise and sell items from the store around Snowdin. Kinda like a door-to-door salesman but she'll usually just go up to people on the street.
The Stoneside Shoppe sells tools, minerals, and even snacks! Though Kanako can usually buy some great new ammo from Martlet. She's trying her best with her job though she checks the employees manual.... freeequently. Always good to double check!
I'm way happier with this design for Martlet AND overall making her feel a bit more significant than how she did before. I really love these two and the implied bonding between them in canon- I was CONSIDERING making these two canonically a QPR but there are still some specific reasons floating around that kinda make me. stress about that. So I'm not sure about that yet but otherwise these two are really close in UTG. :]

STONESIDE – A top-secret Alliance weapon, said to be able to put an end to the St. Vely War, is in its final stages of production, say high-level sources in Stoneside.
The St. Vely War, also called the Final War by some for its sheer scope and scale, began with a territory dispute between Attalan and Tiyam over the duchy of St. Vely, located on the border between the two countries. Though ownership of St. Vely has been a point of contention between the governments of Attalan and Tiyam since the Chora Agreement in 1401y, the St. Vely War marks the first time hostilities have exploded to this degree. In the six months since the Gran Marismo Offensive, nearly every government in the world has sided with either Attalan or Tiyam, with a few notables lending their support to St. Vely’s push for independent statehood.
Last week saw the dramatic reveal of the Coalition’s newest battle tank, the H6-250. The skirmish along the Winsome Straight was ended in decisive fashion as Tiyam’s fleet of H6-250s laid waste to Attalan’s forces. At the time, this was seen as a turning point of the war, but with the news that the Alliance has their own super-weapon nearly ready to go, the conflict may still yet live for some time…
“Atkinson, we’ve got to have this ready to go ASAP. Give me some good news for a change.”
“The chassis is fine. All the… all the ‘add-ons’, as Miles so ghoulishly calls them, are operative.”
“That IS good news. So it’s ready to go?”
“Not quite. As it is right now, the chassis is just a- a body. You could remote control it into a warzone and it could cause damage, sure, but not like how you want.”
“What’s the roadblock, then?”
“I can’t get the AI online. The whole point behind this weapon is that it’s supposed to be able to think, to learn, to- to be able to make split-second decisions about the state of the battlefield.”
“I believe in you, doctor. You’re the finest mind we have. Make it work.”
“But sir, I- I can’t, not in the timeframe you’re asking. Something like this takes months. Years. If at all.”
“Nonsense, Atkinson. You’ve got plenty of time. In fact… am I remembering right? Your daughter is on life support in the medbay, correct?”
“Well, yes, sir, it’s Cronenberg’s syndrome, sir. I’m close to a breakthrough, and then she…”
“Consider that particular diversion of yours canceled. Nobody comes back from Cronenberg’s. We’ll unplug her and that’ll be the end of that. Et voila – much more time for you to work on our dear project.”

“Algie, that appears to be the new weapon Tiyam has been teasing. Is this correct?”
“Yes, Hoss, it sure is. I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s bigger than Brody Station. If you zoom in there, Quinton, you might be able to make out every single turret and cannon this thing has equipped. Hoss, if this thing extended all of its weapons at once, it’d look like a hedgehog.”
“Not to interrupt, Algie, but it looks like L.E is making a move.”
“It sure is! L.E’s AI is advanced enough that it only needed a split second to analyze the situation and pick out the appropriate strategy to completely destroy its foe. It’s flying straight up, high enough that I can barely see it any more… Quinton, do you see that light? Is it charging something up?”
“Algie, it looks as if…”
“Oh no. Quinton, run. Run! RUN!”
“Algie? Come in, Algie. What’s L.E doing? What’s happening-”

She didn’t have a name, so she gave herself one. The only marking she could make out on her chassis, her metal scuffed and bent. A single number.

I know we all hate Lysander but finishing IG chap 41 right now, the bit where he finally reveals who he is to the Rim Golds is such a chilling, absolutely fantastic image. Like, it's something that I can imagine in a tv show and the reactions from the audience, you know? It's cinematic. The way he immediately switches back to his native accent and leaves everyone in the room gagged with this:
“I am the blood of Silenius the Lightbringer, son of Anastasia, son of Brutus, grandson of Lorn au Arcos the Stoneside and Octavia the Sovereign of Man. I was born upon the Palatine, west of Hyperion, at the heart of Luna and the City of Light. I may know little of the Rim, but even in the heart of the empire, they spoke of the honor of House Raa. Of the Moon Lords, chief among them the Ionian Golds. Where has it gone? Has it deserted you? Has it fled after the tremors of war? You may have lost it, forgotten it, but I have not forgotten mine. 2021 in Music - My Top 5 Favourite Albums
5. BLACK VEIL BRIDES – THE PHANTOM TOMORROW
One of America’s most masterful heavy metal bands return with a full-blooded blinder of a concept album which sees them deliver their finest work since their masterpiece, Wretched & Divine. Charismatic frontman Andy Biersak brings the fire in fine form while his band bring plenty of thunder, and the result is one of the finest classic metal records I’ve heard in a while.
Standout tracks: Scarlet Cross, Born Again, Blackbird, Torch, Shadows Rise, Fields of Bone, Crimson Skies, Fall Eternal
4. ARCHITECTS – FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO EXIST
The Brighton metalcore masters continue to evolve their sound with another potentially divisive album that’s likely to alienate their old-school fans, but I’m loving their new stuff, and to me this is their best offering yet. Equal parts harsh and melodic, it’s a magnificent blend of the sub-genre’s characteristic feral savagery and the boys’ more contemplative, adventurous new sound, and I can’t get enough of it.
Standout tracks: Black Lungs, Giving Blood, Dead Butterflies, An Ordinary Extinction, Impermanence, Flight Without Feathers, Little Wonder, Animals, Libertine, Goliath (featuring Simon Neil), Demi God, Meteor, Dying Is Absolutely Safe
3. HOLDING ABSENCE – THE GREATEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE
Their eponymous 2019 debut was a masterful debut that very nearly made my top five that year, but their heavily anticipated follow-up leaves it dead in the water. Raw, intense and deeply personal, this is alternative rock that wears its heart on its sleeve, vocalist Lucas Woodland investing every track with incendiary power and pure, naked emotion. Trust me, listening to this won’t be a mistake at all.
Standout tracks: Celebration Song, Curse Me With Your Kiss, Afterlife, In Circles, Nomoreroses, Beyond Belief, Die Alone (In Your Lover’s Arms), Mourning Song, An Apology Note
2. SAM FENDER – SEVENTEEN GOING UNDER
I was late to the party with youthful Geordie singer-songwriter Sam Fender, only discovering his incredible debut album, Hypersonic Missiles, in this past year, but I fell in love the moment I heard his music. This follow-up may not have the sheer star power anthemic brilliance of that record, but it’s no less worthy of consideration, Fender’s choice to somewhat shed his previous BIG SOUND for a more personal musical journey producing one of the year’s most beautiful albums. This kid’s got a bright future ahead of him.
Standout tracks: Seventeen Going Under, Getting Started, Aye, Get You Down, Long Way Off, Spit of You, Last To Make It Home, Mantra, The Dying Light, Angel In Lothian, Good Company, Poltergeists
1. SPIRITBOX – ETERNAL BLUE
After sneaking in under the radar over the last few years, this Canadian metalcore three-piece have exploded on the scene in a MAJOR WAY and deserve every bit of praise they’ve received. This is the very definition of a powerhouse debut album, a rock-solid epic of consistently ear-wormy corkers and sonic eardrum-bursters, magnificently bolstered by singular frontwoman Courtney LaPlante’s astonishingly rich, complex and flexible voice. I look forward to hearing what they do next.
Standout tracks: Sun Killer, The Summit, Secret Garden, Eternal Blue, We Live In a Strange World, Halcyon, Circle With Me, Constance
The ones that didn’t quite make the cut:
Biffy Clyro – The Myth of Happily Ever After (another cracker from the Scottish alt rockers and a perfect companion piece to A Celebration of Endings); Evanescence – The Bitter Truth (the gothic-tinged emo rockers return after their long hiatus with another killer record); Don Broco – Amazing Things (one of my fave British alt-rock bands deliver another mischievous and gleefully anarchic serving of musical irreverence); Halsey – If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power (the electropop singer-songwriter unleashes a powerfully original concept album with a little help from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, aka Nine Inch Nails); Lonely the Brave – The Hope List (the Cambridge alt-rockers may have a new singer-songwriter but they’re just as robust and epic-sounding as ever)
Honourable mention:
STONESIDE – THE WATER
Why isn’t this at the top of my list? Because it’s an EP, but I had to shout about it because this is, bar none, THE BEST THING I HEARD ALL YEAR. There’s still not much known about this Texan “alt-metal” band, and they still don’t have a particularly big following, but I can’t stop raving about them, and I know I’m not alone. This is a stone-cold masterpiece, seven slices of killer with no filler in sight, beautifully experimental and magnificently subversive in sound, and I just haven’t been able to stop listening to it all year. I cannot wait for these guys to make a full album …

So I'm fleshing out characters fully as I write and I present to you:
Eliza Black
Commander of the 5th Mechanized "Black Division"
"Recipient of the Medal of Honor following her division's rescue of no less than eighteen thousand soldiers from the brink of death, Eliza Black is a living legend among the ranks of the Sol System Military."
Unconventional Assault: Thanks to both her skill and the skill of her subordinates, Eliza is able to devise attacks from almost any direction, no matter the obstacle in her way.
Black Phantom: Eliza's legend isn't limited to the Sol System. Enemy divisions that hear they're facing the mythical Black Division suffer severe morale loss and often break before entering battle.
Mirrors and Flashsmoke: The innovative spirit of the Black Division's engineer corps has resulted in the ability to create false holographic copies of entire platoons at a relatively low cost.

So I'm re-reading through the series from the start, I was wondering - is fitchner intentionally pushing Darrow towards Lorn, possibly to be drafted? There are multiple locations throughout the book in discussion both publicly and privately that fitchner states that you may even get drafted by Lorn. Knowing the way the series goes, and Darrows later comments on what it would have been to be an apprentice to lorn, is there any particular reason why fitchner would have pushed him in that directio?
The year is 738 (give or take, anyway, somewhere before Brutus au Arcos is murdered killed in an accident). Darrow is at the Institute on Mars. Fitchner keeps telking him what he can't do. But he does it anyway.
Lorn au Arcos, as one of the drafters of House Mars, asked Fitchner to get Darrow as the first pick of House Mars.
From then on, Fitchner keeps mentioning Lorn to Darrow. How he should get an apprenticeship from him (sometimes he says he can't, sometimes he says he could even get one from Lorn). He keeps putting that on the table for two reasons: 1. Pierce had three year to think about a continuation of Red Rising before or was published as it was published, so he planted the seeds for that minding the fact that the book could flop, and 2. Lorn au Arcos is one of the greatest duelists of all time - he hasn't taken a student in 30 years and Darrow needed a great House to get into so that Ares' plan could start to get off ground.
Lorn au Arcos is not Nero au Augustus. He is easier to serve under. And by the looks of it, Fitchner wanted Darrow to be great, but not overly great. He needed Darrow to blend in the Society, not take it by storm.
Lorn would have taught Darrow The Willow Way, at least that seems like the most plausible reason Fitchner would want Darrow to go to Lorn. At that time Lorn was still the Rage Knight and from a strategic point of view he seemed like the best bet - martian, but still close to Octavia.
But still in 739, Anastasia and Brutus are killed in an accident. Lorn gives up his place as Rage Knight. Exiles himself on Europa with his entire family. Fitchner's plan would have flopped if Darrow went with Lorn.
Fitchner caught the oportunity to do the spying on Octavia like I suppose he intended Darrow to do if he chose Arcos. So he became the new Rage Knight.
Remeber when Darrow is learning some kravat? He hates it because it is supposed to give him peace. The Willow Way is a a willow tree wipping at the stormy skies. It suits Darrow better. That combined with Lorn's mentions through out Red Rising, hints that the author always intended Darrow to have a a great master teaching him a fighting style that suits him.
And Fitchner thought that Lorn was the best suited for his plan regarding Darrow. I said that because Pierce always intended Fitchner to be Ares. He said so recently in his AMA.
