Been a couple of years, but I still think fondly of Grace Monroe from Infinity Train for achieving that very rare redemption arc narrative of "the people you hurt are allowed to sever all ties, and you can still become a better, happier person."
#grace monroe#grace infinity train#infinity train#in a sea of demands that you must always forgive the people who hurt you no matter what#it was nice to see a plot that gave good weight to feelings and motivations on both side of the equation#hm.#come to think of it#it seems a lot of redemption arcs usually go the route#of redemption through death#or very quick if not immediate acceptance into team the people you traumatized#much more rare to see a redemption arc#where the one on the journey to redemption has to accept that at least some people they've hurt can't or won't forgive them#but that this doesn't automatically mean they can't become a kinder person#hell in grace's case it was pretty shocking/refreshing to see that it was precisely because someone set a hard no-contact boundary with her#that she lost someone she loved but still hurt#which really forced her to reconsider what she was doing#it was a true 'oh no not the quencies' kind of story#but also a 'you will accept the quencies and go forward with your life & hard gained knowledge' narrative#redemption arcs

GT Writing/Reading Question
Ive been writing GT stories for some time now, and reading them for much much longer, so I'm curious what the consensus of this topic is (my opinion and reasons in the tags if you're curious)
#Opinions ahead!!!#don't read until you answer the question#i dont want to influence your answer!#okay#personally i don't really include to many details when writing gt stories#or any story really for that matter#I rather focus on the interactions and showing what is happening#instead of focusing on the ways the characters hair flows in the cold spring wind#or the way the trees were wet with dew after the light downpour of the afternoon#I still include details when i feel they are necessary and HELP to further the experience#but i feel that a lot of the time these details are just fluff#and not the good kind#the kind that slows down pacing and makes it harder to stay focused#this is obviously my personal opinion but unless a GT story is truly truly captivating me i usually will skip over the super fine details#I often find myself skipping around to the dialogue of the story#I think details that describe the setting and like situation are totally fine and ADD to the story#and I love it then but i feel a lot of times it is just wasting the readers time#I don't wanna waste yalls time i want you to enjoy my story to the fullest#soooo yeah#I like detail but using it sparingly is a virtue IMO#very curious about the general consensus because i feel like this is an unpopular opinion on GT tumblr

why is so much of sewing just tracing and cutting and tracing again q_q i see why people get projectors and use adobe illustrator now
#drawing up a design that i can easily pattern from my sloper: 馃槉#actually having to make the pattern by tracing and cutting ad infinitum: 馃槹#piecing together printer paper to get a big enough sheet of paper and doing this ten million times: 馃ゲ馃槶#not to mention the IRONING.... prewashing the fabric and having to iron 8 yards of fabric???? excuse me????#and then distorting it as i iron bc it has a slight stretch and i got so tired i stopped being careful 2 yards in#and the way that you're supposed to press every seam... excuse me... am i just supposed to have my iron heated and on standby at all times#AND THE STEAM??? i just got stay tape the other day and thought it'd be a neat alternative to stay stitching#BUT IT NEEDS STEAM TO ACTIVATE (which okay makes sense) BUT long story short i'm too afraid to use the steam function#on my iron because none of us are sure if water should go back into a tank that's been in disuse for 30+ years#so instead i get this water spray pen and delicately spray down the length of each piece of stay tape#before i cover it with a piece of gauze and iron it. and then i have to iron it extra so all the water actually evaporates#oh and the spray pen holds as much water as half a pen so i have to walk to the kitchen every 10 sprays to refill it#and i have to do this for every curved edge on my pattern pieces#i mean the alternative is just stay stitching but then i would have to calibrate my settings for a single layer of fabric instead of double#which means i have to switch my needle out more and i'm still new enough that sometimes i install a needles wrong despite going through#all the same exact motions that i usually would. i'm LITERALLY suffering out here. anyway can't wait to sew or whatever#oh and did i mention i went to a sewing meetup recently? yeah...#everyone there bought like $30-$100/yard fabric and i was there awkwardly knowing i only buy like $12/yard fabric#honestly though i have the opposite problem people usually joke about. i find it So hard to find fabric i actually like#it needs to be the right fiber + right color + right pattern/texture + right weight + i have to know exactly what i'm going to make with it

#im posting this very late because i was sort of weary of how it came out and ended up messing w it until it was like 4am oops.#and i have plans tmrw so... oh well! i did my best and ill put it out while i can!#and i tried to make the scene match barnard's colors lol#finn's ocs#finn's art#i know i said id do more sillay stuff with the simpler screentone only style but i had a couple more of these in me#and this is the first piece im making thats like an actual part of the story too rather than just setting stuff for fun#i wanna write something to go with it too but for now ill just sort of briefly explain the context in the tags here:#barnard has a pretty bad case of OCD and his compulsions have made it difficult to make friends in the past#he was never outright bullied or anything but people just didnt really have the patience to deal with it#he has compulsions that include stuff like walking through doors until it feels right and needing things to be perfectly aligned#which in group settings has lead to people having to wait for him to finish his rituals and join them#they might find it tolerable at first but eventually they grow impatient and hes just... not invited to stuff anymore#but juno is a newer member of the guild who ends up frequenting the same library. hes also kinda a little weird#and they dont become fast friends or anything but just sort of naturally spend time in the same place#though they never plan meetups they eventually fall into a routine. around the same time theyd just both be at the library#and read next to each other. and maybe talk a bit. and eventually they end up walking back to the guildhall together#since theyre going to the same place after all. and juno always waits for barnard outside the door#eventually barnard asks if this bothers him. juno kinda just tells him 'of course it does' without any malice or anything. just a statement#barnard is surprised and apologizes and juno says not to. but the next day juno doesnt show up at the usual time.#barnard assumes hes committed somekinda more by bringing it up. he ends up staying there late reading to get his mind off it & not ruminate#but when he leaves juno is in fact still waiting for him down the hall (see pic) having collected a bunch of books literally abt ocd#he fell asleep bc barnard stayed later than expected. and hes an eepy guy generally. and also one very bad at expressing himself#but now barnard gets that juno's 'of course it [bothers me]' had the implication of 'but its worth it' which no friend has previously done.#and from the interaction juno was also able to understand that this isn't something barnard just does for the hell of it so. he studies.#and checks a bunch of stuff out because he thinks it could help his friend too (theres ocd workbooks and such- i remember working w them)#and thats the point where they became more ''friends'' than ''pleasant library acquaintances''#from there on they also do get into juno's problems. whole other bag of worms. but this specific scene is more about bernard from his pov#sorry about when i said briefly explain. i lied </3#but compared to the whole sequence im picturing its brief so shhh

xl went through so much insane suffering, things like being stabbed until he barely resembles a human form and being locked in a coffin for literally a hundred years, but I think making him immortal and ever-healing and showing how much he learned from his experiences AND ending his story with so much closure and close relationships makes his tragedies a lot easier to bear than wwx's. like, emotionally
#when I see xl I go marlon brando voice *look how they massacred my boy*#reading books 2 and 4 going wow this is really sad im glad that's behind xl and he's at such peace#reading the flashbacks in mdzs and going WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK#wwx does have a nice little recovery arc in the book but he's still clearly really messed up from a lot that had happened to him#and compartmentalizing and avoiding his past and desperately trying to survive another day#in a way xl really wasn't. he was just chilling#this is why I never read tgcf fic unless it's very goofy or pokes fun at canon#it feels like such a more complete story with no loose ends or lingering issues#tho tbf I don't really search for novel fic I search for cql fic and happen to run into novel stuff that I like sometimes#which is usually modern with magic or dealing with various things I thought weren't handled well like the sex scenes#also he was by all accounts a very stable and happy child and young adult. the shit didn't even start until he was 17#by that point wwx had lost two sets of parents been hunted on the street by feral dogs as a starving child been tortured multiple times#has lost his home to a violent invasion had given up his core in a painful procedure that he knew would eventually kill him#and been in a war#hm. anyway.#tgcf txp

my post series recommendation is that if you've never listened to the orchestral version of hero by faouzia while thinking about Wilhelm and Simon's utter trainwreck of a romance, you should. I think you should.
#shows#young royals#I have loved this show truly#and it can never not be political for me given where I grew up and my own convictions but I don't think the crew copped out of the politics#maybe it's a gentler version of the story than reality would allow but it's a wonderful example of#thoughtful naturalistic visual storytelling that is largely uninterested#in overexplaining or justifying it's narrative#while still remaining loyal to it's thematic baseline#I'd love to actually get around to some of that meta I vauged about post s2 on class and setting and possibly I will in May#when I have room for thoughts#because I do still want to make my points about how the personalisation of politics usually makes people blind to the systemic issue at han#which I think the show balanced pretty nicely#if you grew up or are growing up in a constitutional monarchy and you're not really engaged with your local republican movement#maybe now would be a good time to start thinking about it#a lot of people think 'well it's an archaic system so it should go' and leave it at that but the issues run so much deeper#than who the head of state is and this stuff is really worth considering if this is the political system the currently defines your future#anyway I'll put my praxis down for the time being#and just take a moment to appriciate this fantastic variation on the age old theme#isn't love really just a form of madness#like doesn't first love just kind of make you utterly lose your mind in a way that could conceivably bring empires to their knees#in all of it's single minded innocence and utter irrationality#cause yeah....yeah I remember that

If you ever feel dim. Don't worry. I set off the security alarms trying to open up the office building. Because i was tapping the fob on the aircon/electric unit and NOT the security alarm deactivator
#it was horrendous#i was SHAKING like a leaf. i thought police would turn up and jump on me#i at one point thought. fuck. maybe if i shut the door lock it and put everything back it'll stop#and then i'll wait til 8am when someone else gets here. but then i thought what if it continues. and then i have to redo everything again#and still have to find the disabler. so i just spent 5mins with alarm full blare tryna find where to tap this fob too#thing is. nobody and i mean nobody was going to be at the office for a further hour.#'it's obvious the deactivator will be on your right' well. obviously not. it was on the right but on a corner bit of the wall#not right next to the door like expected where the other unit thing was.#it's fucking hilarious telling everyone now. but flipping hell in that moment i was strESSED#i had a feeling it'd happen. i joked about it in my office the day before. like lol imagine i get to london and fucking fuck it all up#well. i did.#i think it was just an alarm. or i did it in under the set time before it called the police.#anywayssssss#another story to add to the what makes up my personality book#in my defence it's not my usual office and i've been there only once before. but that time someone else had opened up#apparently my usual office building is even more of a nightmare. not surprised. if a small building was that bad. dread to think our one#our one for context is like 10脳 the size because of all the floors it has

I have gotten an idea for Inklings Challenge!!!
#i KNEW i wanted to use vengeance/redemption as a theme but secondary world is not my forte#I'm usually more urban fantasy tbh but!! i got an idea!!#I'm taking a concept from riddle-master and reworking it into something original but still interesting in the way i find mckillip's system#and the story is about dead siblings and ghosts and vengeance and growth. and a girl who's maybe a bird.#i need to figure out which of the inklings imagery will tie in best but I'm thinking fire just as a background setting motif#moodboards and playlist incoming hopefully soon btw#need to compile some Vibes#Lu rambles#inklings challenge
