I played and finished Slay the Princess last night while I was puppy sitting. I had such a great time. She’s my scary wife now.
Spoilers + more detailed thoughts below the cut, but without spoilers:
[points at devs] haha horror podcast fans
I’ve always loved Nicole Goodnight from her first appearances on Nosleep. she did so excellent as the Princess.
Very impressive scope, even with the very definitive ending I got, I came away from the game feeling like there were still paths I hadn’t seen.
Just as a general tone setter, I love the opening card/disclaimer that ends with “This Is A Love Story.”
GREAT visual style and art. I’ll get into this in my breakdown below, but with my amateur eye I love how they took a non-traditional approach to way the images/characters are displayed in a renpy game
INCREDIBLE music.
Hard to avoid Disco Elysium comparisons with the aspects of the Self mechanic, which I’m sure is either a received as a high compliment or is a source of annoyance for the devs, lol
Highly recommend it for OELVN fans, horror fans, and lesbians.
First and foremost, I’m genuinely very impressed at the amount of variety to the paths.
On my first playthrough, I got on a loop where I kept the princess locked up, and then she came upstairs and killed me. The next loop, The Paranoid showed up, and when we went into the basement, it was all spooky and distorted. In this one, we had some great banter with The Princess before I ultimately decided to slay her, and trapped me in the basement by warping reality and removing the stairs, forcing me to kill myself to escape that loop. The Cold showed up in chapter 3, and I think that was when I tried to leave the woods.
In subsequent loops, even when choosing all the choices I made to the best of my memory, I couldn’t recreate that first loop at all. It really speaks to the scope of the game in an impressive way.
The first vessel I managed to provide was The Tower. (It was the outcome of being mauled on your first encounter with her, then perceiving her as a dominating, inevitable force.) After discovering my new objective, the endings I saw were The Prisoner (It’s the ending where you just wait for the cell to rot away around you), The Razor (GOATED route, I will be calling her ‘Knife Wife,’), The Damsel, and ended with The Adversary (devil horns), before reaching Awakening.
These are the only routes I can talk about, but I’m certain there were at least 2 I missed/didn’t get to see. It’s an EXTREMELY impressive scope, and fully voiced, to boot, so my hat is off to the devs on that front.
(The next few paragraphs are about the voice acting, if you want my story thoughts, I made a small heading for that bc my VA thoughts got a bit out of hand lol)
Voice Acting
While I’m on the subject of the game being fully voiced: Nicole’s voice acting really shines here, and it’s absolutely essential to making this game what it was. I think a version of this game without it would be very Good, but not nearly as Haunting. The sheer variety of reads on certain lines based on how you first approach the princess is incredibly impressive, as well. (Again— scope!!!)
As far as the narrator VO goes, i can’t deny that Jonathan did a great job, and with his history of being the main narrator for The Magnus Archives, he was a good fit for the tone and audience of the game. I would even posit that, even if there were other people who were considered in the early phases of development, the cross-promotional potential of drawing in even a small section of an audience already primed for cosmic, reality-altering horror via TMA was a very smart business decision, and I applaud them for it. That being said, I think one unintended side effect of his casting may be that people familiar with his TMA character (a…semi-reliable narrator) might immediately come in primed with doubts about the Narrator. They seem to have anticipated this, though, and included skeptical and suspicious dialogue choices with him right off the bat in the first chapter, which is fun.
(A brief aside: If it seems like I am being very measured with my thoughts on the Narrator, it is not because I have anything negative to say about his performance. I am being measured simply because the narrative devices the game employs makes it impossible to not draw comparisons to Big Hitters like The Stanley Parable and Disco Elysium— both incredible games that I personally would be both delighted and terrified to be brought up when discussing a game I created or a role I was playing.
These games did not Create the idea of “a narrator you interact with and who is sometimes rude to you” or “multiple voices with distinct Traits butting in on your current predicament,” but both games are incredibly prolific in how implemented those devices and the vocal performances involved.so it is not a fair comparison.)
Story Thoughts
The subtitle for this section could also be “Faron ranks how hot they find all of the versions of The Princess.” jk.
I am not going to do summaries here I’m just going to assume most people reading this have played the game.
But let’s start again with the sentence at the beginning of the game: “This is a love story.”
Not long ago, there was a big discussion on tumblr about the statement that horror is “about love”, (it might have even been spurred on by TMA, lol) and that lead to a lot of justified (but not always kind) posts from my fellow horror fans being annoyed by that take. I’ll spare you a rehash of all of that. But it is exactly Because of that discourse (and my general gothic preferences) that I like the choice to open with this a whole lot. The phrase “This is a love story,” written in bold, at the end of a disclaimer saying ‘there are no wrong choices, just different paths,’ has an immense power to it. It is a mic drop way to open up a story, as a way to prime the audience to be open to the Princess as more than a monster, and creates the anticipation for a greater relationship to be uncovered between the protagonist and the princess.
It could also be that the phrase hit my brain in a weird way because of Fata Morgana. I don’t think The House in Fata Morgana had a similar line in the actual game— but my roommate who handed me Fata Morgana very specifically told me, “it is a horror game, and it is a tragedy, but at its core, It Is a Love Story.” And that’s always stuck with me. (I digress.)
A Brief Address to Loops and the Popularity of the Looping Narrative
I could sit here all day and talk to you guys about looping metanarrative structure and the different approaches to it, but you’ve probably all played a VN with that before. (If you haven’t, and this is your first time encountering something like this and it blew your mind…Go play Zero Escape: 999. Run, don’t walk.)
I believe very strongly that reviews should be about what a game Is, and how well it accomplished what it aims to be, not about what you wish the game was. But it is an even stronger opinion of mine that loop narratives, especially in visual novels, can sometimes get too bogged down in the details of “why am i in a time loop.”
I am extremely glad that this game (mostly) avoided this, bc it offers an opportunity to say something about the subgenre as a whole.
At the end of the day, looping narratives mainly exist as a metanarrative device in VNs to acknowledge and offer a reason why your character’s behavior (and/or your choices) change. It’s an easy way to create ludonarrative harmony, and to inject some extra drama with little extra effort.
But BECAUSE it’s easy, it can also feel Extremely Overused, and starts to become an expectation.
I won’t go on a soapbox about it, especially because I feel like this game handled it very well, and the looping, metanarrative aspect is suited to the themes and character subject matter of Beings Who Are Concepts, even if they Why doesn’t really satisfy. At the end of the day, this is a love story, and the why matters less than the feelings involved.
Specific Path Thoughts
All versions of the Princess are incredibly strong concepts, and the game is structured in a way that I very much would enjoy seeing how different people’s first loops influence their opinions on her. It’s got IMMENSE “streamability” in that regard.
Someone that encountered The Damsel version of the princess first would have an INCREDIBLY different experience than someone who encountered the Adversary first, which ties very neatly into the subject of the greater love story and can also generate some great post-play discussion.
I think, undoubtedly, the Aspects of the princess that made the biggest impressions on me were The Adversary (demon wife) and The Razor (Knife Wife). Part of this is due to the sheer length of their paths, as both of them take 3+ loops (correct me if I’m wrong) to reach the conclusion of their sections, whereas The Damsel, The Tower, and The Prisoner all only took 2. (See the next section for more on that). Thinking about it, every path was similar in the amount of sheer resources created for them (illustrations, animation), but these two create the illusion of having more than the others simply due to being the longest action sequences and loops in the game.
The Razor has an OUTSTANDING design, and the sequence to slay her would have been an incredible finale in its own right, as we get introduced to EVERY Aspect of ourselves as we die over and over again, even shoving the narrator out of the way so we can just jump to the cabin and fight her again, and the PC reasoning that “if there’s enough of Me, I might be able to overcome her”. For this reason, and because of the big knife skeleton body, I think that the Razor path is more Fun than the Adversary’s.
Flavor-wise, however, I feel like The Adversary is a much stronger character and narrative thread. A princess who doesn’t want to escape— she just wants a good fight. She wants you at your best, and she won’t have any less. That’s exactly the sort of character dynamic that really gets me going. I love single-minded women, and I love a main character who meets them on their level of crazy.
Both of these paths involve the Aspects of Self “The Hunted” and “The Stubborn,” and they are the aspects of the PC that by FAR have the most color to them (besides the lover, who is more of a buffoon.) I think they were my favorites.
That being said, I adored how exhausted the Narrator got during the Damsel path, and I thought there was a very quiet, profound power in the Prisoner version of the Princess. She had an austere, quiet pride to her, tinged with an undeniable sorrow.
I really do appreciate the variety of ways they provide for one to approach your dialogues with the Shifting Mound after every loop. They really create a lot of space for the player to decide how they feel about her. Even if it sort of bothered me that every time there was a choice to tell her you would slay her once it was all over, I appreciate the option being there. (And, again- the sheer amount of dialogue!! Sheesh!)
Lastly, the finale. It was incredible, going through all of the forms, reliving all of the choices you made. But this is the part that the amount of options started to detract from my experience.
Again- I love that they left a lot of space for people to decide how they feel. I like the amount of responses provided, and I get the impression they don’t change the final choice in any way, just the dialogue she says to get to it.
But it bothered me that there was an option to just…opt out of seeing every vessel, either by submitting to her or by killing her. I can’t see a world where anyone playing a finale like this would WANT to cut the big final movement short. It seems silly.
The payoff was worth it, though. It was a beautiful end and one that definitely will stick with me.
(And Obviously I decided to take her hand and remain endless with her! How could I not!)
Mechanical Musings
Note: I am a dabbler in Ren’Py, but I have been a dabbler for over a decade, and I went to college for game design. (You’re allowed to laugh) I’m not GOOD at programming, and I forget the class names for basically everything unless I’m looking at it.
All of this is all to say I am PURELY speculating on how certain parts of the game were accomplished.
UI/Display/Visuals
The choice to omit a typical text box was an objectively correct one for this game, in no small part to how they decided to do the visuals on this game. It kept the game looking clean and drew the eye to the stunning visuals. The right aligned prompt box similarly aided in that respect, and I think that being forced to scroll down to resist during certain tense sequences was a great touch. Makes me wonder if there’s a timed element on those responses.
The choice to eschew using typical talk sprites (outside of The Long Quiet scenes, the sequence with The Damsel, i thiiiiink the confrontation in the basement maze, and the finale) in favor of using scenes/displayed images really aided in the storybook vibes, and the animated loops they had on those images gave the pencil work an amazing kinetic energy for the scenes where the princess is just standing or sitting still. (For the uninitiated- It’s incredibly simple to program animation loops using static images in RPY, but I’m not clear if that the most memory-efficient way to do so; I’m going to assume they did this though)
The menu Ui is what gives it away as Renpy to me, but you know, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, lol.
I’m sort of surprised there wasn’t anything like a scene viewer or gallery that unlocked at the end, but I guess that might sort of be immersion breaking.
Gameplay
Just from my hobbyist eye, I can tell there’s a looooott of dialogue flags in this one, where they track previous things you’ve said in the scene. There is absolutely a variable for “Princess hostility,” just based on the fact there’s several like reads of her answering the questions you can ask in chapter one, but since I only did a single run where I didn’t pick up the knife in chapter 1, I can’t be sure if it’s points based or binary “has knife = true.”
My guessssss about how the Aspects are inherited is that it might be a point based system combined with a flag indicating how you died; this would explain how I inherited “the paranoid” in ch2 my first run, but never after that.
I can say with almost complete certainty from the way it completely locked me out of deciding to leave the princess locked up after my choice to leave the woods that there is a true/false variable tracker for each path that stores if you’ve reached the Long Quiet or not, bc no matter what I did I could NOT do that again. Either that or there’s a flag where the narrator will lock you downstairs after seeing that screen once.
There’s also probably some variables tied to your appearance changing in the mirror, but i would need to double check achievements to be sure that text isn’t just set to appear after X vessels being provided.
There’s also a distinct possibility there are different “pools” for the princess’ aspects to be pulled from after each “level” of ascension; this would set it up so that it’s impossible for you to end with an event that is only 1 loop long, and it would be easier to assure story pacing that way.
(Ex: “If Vessels < 2, use Event_Pool_A, Else use Event_Pool_B”, where pool A contains vessels that use less than 2 loops to complete)
All in all, if I ever got the chance to crack the hood open on this, I would. I highly recommend it.

I’m really digging Malevolent so far, here are my reactions to the first 5 episodes.
Warning: it's super long and dumb
E1
“~And you call it madness ~ Ah but I call it love~” a bop
Off to a great start, our head’s haunted and our eyes have stopped working. Also the voice in our head started growling when we picked that book up. This is some demonic possession shit
The voice started out so soft and friendly like ‘hey buddy, I’m your friend. Just calm down’ and then it immediately gets pissed when Arthur start asking questions
“I have your eyes” disconcerting
And we murdered our partner… this is a great start to the podcast
Several shenanigans including hiding a dead body and almost killing a guy later
We learn that the thing in our head was sent to Arthur via book, it’s possessing our eyes so we’re dependent on it. There are other worlds caused by the choices each world makes and when a being or world dies it is sent to The Dark World where our creepy new friend is from. A junkyard for realities.
We also learn that it’s 1934 and that Arthur lives in Arkham ma. The same town Lovecraft wrote about….
Catchy little tune from the opening again except… the voice recognizes it and Arthur doesn’t… I’m going to remember that for later
Obligatory: someone else (wearing a white mask the voice recognizes) is after the cursed artifact that we’re in possession of and almost shoots us
Voice reveals that they don’t remember who they are before getting very angry at Arthur for basically trying to be a good detective even though he’s blind now. *Growl*
Oh and the previous tenant of our office left town in a hurry… great!
Oh creepy mask guy knows where we live… GREAT!
The last detective who worked in our office that we got our cases from had a partner who died horrifically… GREAT!!!
And I’m so happy to know that our dead partner Peter (RIP) felt like he was being watched in this creepy house when they were trying to find that dead girl
But at least the voice is nice enough to tell us it’s a sunny day, right?
Nah, he’s suspicious, why did he get so angry when Arthur mentioned not asking more questions about the dismembered dead girl. Why is this important to them?
Hidden bookshelf door!!! 10/10 podcast!!!!
That mural… a mass of black tentacles, wet mouths and writhing goats legs…I kinda want to draw it now
And if there was any doubt in my mind that this was going to be some Lovecraft shit, Arthur name drops The Miskatonic University
What are you, voice? How do you know the mural’s name?
“Arthur, I am not this creature” oh but you’re totally a completely different eldritch horror, aren’t you?
A second more secret, more evil basement
Oh… very bad things are going to happen to us
E2
I agree with Arthur, you got a cult! What are you!
You saying “I have your eyes still” like it’s a threat doesn’t instill confidence!
This conversation with the librarian makes me realize that if this were one of the older cosmic horror short stories, Arthur would be the weird stranger someone meets that kicks off the plot. You meet this guy that walks as if he can’t see but his eyes are clearly assessing everything around him. He leaves long pauses when he talks as if he’s listening for something and once he slips up and calls himself we while asking to see a cursed book on an old god because he’s researching a cult. Our boy is a weird dude and I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets chased by monster hunters in the future.
congrats, you've upgraded to homicide
Wait. waitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwait! "I can't feel my arm!" "No, but I can" Body Snatcher!
I have a very bad feeling about this new development and Arthur agrees but at least Voice doesn't seem to actually want our body. can't tell whether or not this is foreshadowing.
God I love the conversations that these two have about their situation and the possibility of them switching places. And who tf are you voice?
dice again? why?
out of everything, Accidental child acquisition was not something I was expecting
Are we being chased by goats right now?
That song again! and something terrible happens immediately after
I swear to god if this child is the antichrist I will eat aquarium gravel
E3
"Where's the car?" "All over the place" "And the driver?" "All over the place as well" add vehicular manslaughter to our list of crimes
with the creepy mansion this feels like a ttrpg side quest
Arthur speaks so softly about the baby
dice sounds again? maybe this is a ttrpg. Is it a meta thing and the writers are choosing story beats with them or is it part of the story?
I think this show solved the problem of visual descriptions in podcasts.
Normally a writer has three choices for this 1: make the characters describe their surroundings and appearances of other people which can sound a bit stilted and out of place since sighted people don't do that, 2: choose not to describe anything or anyone unless you have to which feels more real but sometimes means the audience has no idea what's going on, or 3: have the audio show told in something other than first person or present tense (It's a radio show, series of letters, phone calls, there's an omnipotent narrator, ect...)
But with a blind main character and a secondary character guiding them, there's an in-universe reason to describe the scene to us. we can see just as much as Arthur can so the voice is our eyes as well. It's brilliant!
maybe that's why I feel the need to use the word we while talking about this podcast, I feel like I'm inside Arthur's head.
Why is a raven like a writing desk?
one of the missing girls was an unnamed immigrant, was this polish family related to her?
This is some spooky ghost shit that I can appreciate
I feel like the choice to free or destroy will have ramifications for Arthur down the line
"I have to hope that any creature can be redeemed" Damn! careful, your insecurities are showing (luv this)
E4
Arthur is very sweet with the baby
probably not a good idea to bring a baby on our horror road trip anyway
Aww <3 he described the baby for Arthur, this is so sweet
This is too relatable. If I accidentally asked for a ride from the wrong truck and the driver said yes I would also get in anyway just to avoid being rude.
I feel like every new episode is just a different horror movie, this one feels like a hitchhiker slasher flick
Maybe the weird gas mask guy is nice actually? Maybe I'm just being too judgemental.
nope he's going to kill us
it's like a bad joke 'Two men who hear voices are on a road trip together'
there are four known fear responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn. Arthur is a fawner, in times of danger he will become so polite that he will follow the serial killer into the creepy basement
first dice and now a coin flip I really hope this series has a Q&A
can he... hear us? is it something about sanity that brings you closer to these monsters? Oops never mind
"We need to get the fuck out of this basement now!" really Arthur? NOW YOUR CONCERNED!
Another Missing girl!
"Arthur, tell that voice in your head that my mother was not a whore" Literal chills
Arthur has been stabbed and Oh the tension is palatable!
Pros to bringing the severed head: We might get some answers. Cons to bringing the severed head: It's a rotting severed head.
Every time violence happens the voice gets very excited by the prospect of murder
Calamity follows these two wherever they go
Well Arthur is dead, that's the end of the podcast
"This too shall pass"
E5
Oh god not another voice. Fuck are we in jail!
Adam Fry
An asylum, if MoonKnight taught me anything it's that this is neither real nor harmless
the door feels oddly shaped... please don't be flesh
Oh that is not a human
"Wait did I tell you my name?" Oh god something was in our head and we just told it exactly where to go and who to find!
"We've been in a coma for over a month" I'm so excited to see how things can possibly get worse than this over the course of the podcast
At least our voice has a name now. Hello John, it's nice to meet you
That song again
Oh no... we're too late...so what killed her
Wait... I actually had to go back to listen to our confrontation with Eddie. Arthur did shoot him but I'm pretty damn sure that John strangling him is what finished the job... what game are you playing here, John?
Between the monster library book, Arthur dreaming of that otherworldly asylum, and these new visions I think that he might be slowly un-tethering from reality. Using these visions is tempting but I think John's right about this changing us. Let's see what the dead girl has to say
fingers
oh it's never good when the creature can see you through your visions
"It felt like he tricked us" "He wanted us to touch her" I am having all the bad feelings
"He can't come through"
"No"
"But?"
"But maybe other things can"
Not much to say about this next part there's a monster chasing our boys and I'm terrified. Good job podcast.
"It looks like foulness"
Ah yes when in doubt pull a Hansel and Gretel
John knows Robert Frost
Dice whenever we find something
We're being hunted, something has seen us, our lead is dead, and we need to find her diary to get some answers lets fucking go!
So far I am LIVING for everything going on here definitely going to keep listening

Tag people you want to get to know better game thing!
Ty @toads-treasures for the tag i will honor it with my life.
Tagging @surumarssi @creatureactivist @sodalover @pitl0ver si quieren
Last Song: Magnetic by Waterparks (i'm going to see them in a week!)
Currently Watching: Four different things lol 1) Neon Genesis Evangelion (rewatch) bc i'm gonna watch End of Evangelion w a friend over spring break. 2) Black Lagoon - kinda mid but pretty fun. I like how Revy has Gun Autism and belligerent sexual tension with every other woman in the show 3) Dungeon Meshi. very nice to chill eat dinner while watching the Monster Food Show. 4) Scavengers Reign - soooo good. What if you were marooned on the most beautiful scifi horror planet ever. Alien ecosystem that hates you is one of the most creatively designed things ive ever seen
Three Ships: hmmmm i feel like i think less abt ships now than i did a few years ago. That said,
Asa x Denji (Chainsaw Man manga) - ohhhhh my god its so good. this is mostly bc Asa is one of my favorite characters ever but their cringeboy x failgirl dynamic is peak. theres also the impending doom which totally wont happen if i look over here.
Anthy x Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena) - the blueprint. i can't talk about them here this post would reach novella length. go watch Utena legitimately the best show ive ever seen.
Shinji x Kaworu (NGE) - whenever i get sad i post this to my instagram story
Tumblr media
Favorite Color: her...
Tumblr media
Currently consuming: Priory of the Orange Tree (book, good), The Magnus Protocol (podcast, good), Kill Six Billion Demons (webcomic, goated)
First Ship: The first thing i shipped in any way relating to internet fandom was Pharah x Mercy (overwatch). The first fictional relationship that i really liked and thought about tho is probably Percy and Annabeth. PJO numero uno campeao do mundo
Place of Birth: Northeast USA
Current Location: 39.644727°N, 76.745757°W
Last Movie: DUNE PART 2 ITS SO GOOD RAHHHH
Currently working on: I have several writing projects that are neat but are not getting finished, but primarily three things: 1) scifi project ive been working on since i was 15. I think ive managed to stay true to the original vision (star wars ripoff) while also making it somewhat good. 2) Newish high fantasy project born out of worldbuilding a four-gender system. I like how the magic system intertwines with gender i like the theme of cycles and how to break them, but ive still got a long way to go. 3) Long scifi short story about a clash of oppressive societies via toxic yuri. almost done!
Writing: I'm assuming this means completed. Several small things i don't care too much about, and one pretty good short story about a spaceship AI having a Transgender Moment (1 dead many injured)
Art: discord whiteboard akiangel. they're in love btw.

One thing about getting recs from your dash is you never really know what you're getting into! So Malevolent podcast, let's go.
My dude how are you not tripping on *everything* I would be all over the place
Jesus I hope you guys don't try and drive how are you going to handle that? Oh. Okay.
I'm here for the eldritch entities, yeah, sure, but HOW ARE THERE THIS MANY CABS, GODDAMN
Arthur buddy you are averaging a kill an hour here-- I kind of hope you were an asshole so that I don't feel bad for your obvious impending doom (and body count)
VA you may theoretically be in MA but you are still obviously British XD
This is like listening to two people play Amnesia the Dark Descent where one can see the screen and the other with the controller can't, which is . . . so far so obvious because Cthulhu times.
This is extremely streamlined, so that means literally EVERYONE has a finger in eldritch bullshit
I would actually kind of like more time skips, make it less obvious This is a Speedrun
Time to commit some spectacularly bad ideas!
"I can't read that language but I CAN read the eldritch horror glyphs" Arthur all "Yes that seems legitimate and exactly like how my day is going, why not."
I'm shocked that the fully expected car crash was not their fault (Also if this is 1934 the car probably had fuck all safety features he would be THROUGH THE WINDOW)
Surprise accidental baby acquisition! PUT IT BACK PUT IT BACK
. . . Baby crying noises make my kitten very interested/concerned, huh
"The black goat comes *CRASH*" "What was that?!" I'm going to take a wild guess that it's the black goat, my dude.
When the eldritch entity thinks things are bad ideas PLEASE LISTEN YOU ASSHAT
OH LORD STRANGER DANGER STRANGER DANGER
What the actual fuck, dude. (Unasked for exposition) . . . No now you do see how that's worse?
I'm chanting along with the eldritch entity all "GO GO GO GET OUT"
My dude your self-preservation skills are *lamentable*
The eldritch entity all "Holy shit I am literally Satan Take the Wheel and I have the better ideas *how* are you this much a mess"
That was legitimately alarming thank you for the horror!
Eldritch entity giving its meat puppet pep talks and "You can do this, c'mon, go, buddy go!"
Time for dismemberment agogo!
Less flying limbs than expected but made up for it with pyromania
Thank you for actually having some suspicion even if you have no self-preservation
Is it really a horror podcast if there wasn't trauma-induced coma?
"And did you remember that murder we committed, yeah, yeah"
"So I can see how I can get more control but how about you NOT DO THAT"
Long and thin, would you perhaps say, SLENDER
"WHAT DID I JUST SAY"
Oh those are not good sounds they are not good sounds at all
HELLO NEW FRIEND
Those were some really fun NOT GOOD sounds
All right, hit the end of episode 5, time to stop for the evening~

Really can’t stop thinking of those posts that are like “If people are describing your HORROR PODCAST as a cutesy gay vacation, maybe you did something wrong :/.” Because like fr i didn’t notice until now that so many people under all the episodes only discuss the shipping aspects of the entire thing (and seeing RQ LIKE some of those comments as early as season 1-). I mean like it’s the internet, people will only focus on the shipping stuff, but it still gets my goat a bit that when it comes to the most “terrifying, uncomfortable, mind boggling season”, people are like
Teehee~! Cute boyfriend road trip 😂😂😂🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵😝🥰😜😚😍😍 Look at them argue how cute!
Like…
No I want to discuss the horrors, dude. This should be about the terrors of humanity. The first thing I hear about this podcast shouldn’t be how gay it is… especially when people hype up just HOW gay it is, meanwhile I’m like ??? I mean like yeah don’t get me wrong I’m LGBTQ+ in multiple ways, but it’s not like. The ships shouldn’t be the main focus of the series.
Like talk about Jon and Martin as the separate people they are im begging you. Especially when the ship that you love so much with “So much positive rep!!!!” Is NOT as healthy and good as you’re so dilusioned to think it is.
Idk im just venting bye

Okay this is my last formal pitch to get my followers to listen to Friends at the Table, an actual play podcast focused on critical worldbuilding, smart characterization, and fun interactions between good friends.
Season 7, Sangfielle, just started.
It's an entirely new setting, you can just start here and won't be missing anything.
Sangfielle is a weird west/gothic horror setting. Set about 200 years after things began to go Wrong, "Sangfielle" refers to the expansive Bloodfields contained within the ringed city of Concentus.
But seriously, space is weird so within Sangfielle this city is out of sight.
We have mysterious (dragon?) egg sacks, we have pomegranates the size of beach balls, we have a goat woman who was kidnapped and raised on an evil train and now wears parts of that train as armor as she has become a knight hunting down more trains.
Have you ever wondered what if the bug dude from Naruto was also the brother from The Mummy? We have him too.
Tumblr media
Episodes 01-03 are the worldbuilding sessions where they play "The Ground Itself". Yes eight players are a lot of people to keep track of but it was a fantastic game in my opinion and I recommend you start here.
Episode 04 is character introductions. I'll be honest this episode is really long and I listened to it twice and still didn't retain much of it. You can skip this if you want. The characters will be given brief introductions when they appear onscreen the first time.
Episode 05 is where their game of "Heart: The City Beneath" starts. The players have split into two parties so there are less voices to distinguish. This episode just came out Thursday so if you listen to this you will be all caught up!
Friends at the Table can be found on your podcast app of choice, or at their website friendsatthetable.net. Fans are paid to create transcripts which can be found at transcriptsatthetable.com.

the sheridan tapes  📼  part two.   here and under the cut, you can find over 130 lines of dialogue from the horror podcast the sheridan tapes, specifically from episodes four to six, edited for roleplay purposes. some of these focus heavily on survival, war, science, and spooky stuff, but a lot can be used by anyone.  tw:  war, unreality, a mention of cannibalism, implications of manic behaviour.
❝  god, i hate snowstorms like this. not just getting caught in them, but the storms themselves. it feels like the earth’s trying to bury me alive every time it locks in like this. like nature’s rightly pissed off at all of us and doing its level best to crush us to death.  ❞
❝  that’s what yom kippur means:  the day of atonement.  ❞
❝  that wasn’t the first time i’ve caught him in my office, going through my stuff.  ❞
❝  normally i’d be annoyed at someone calling me young lady.  ❞
❝  thank you… you are so warm… thank you for letting me in.  ❞
❝  suddenly, everything fell into place. i made more progress than i had in about half a year.  ❞
❝  the thing i remember most was catching disapproving glances from my father every time i went to the library.  ❞
❝  why does time only run forward?  why does cause need to precede effect?  ❞
❝  no one knows if they can trust me with casework or not.  ❞
❝  i didn’t say i was interested.  ❞
❝  [he/i] was taken off duty and sent for psychiatric evaluation the next day.  ❞
❝  coffee. i was making coffee.  ❞
❝  i didn't mean to get stuck out here.  ❞
❝  that just goes to show how small humans really are in the grand scheme of things:  take away our tools and our toys and our technology, and we’re still just as vulnerable as we ever were.  ❞
❝  she was good at that:  making you feel like you were safe, like you could open up to her.  ❞
❝  i’m just going to cover that one up. no harm in keeping it out of sight for the moment.  ❞
❝  maybe there was someone in the stairs.  ❞
❝  i think i did the lion’s share of the talking, which almost never happens.  ❞
❝  i couldn’t get to sleep... i figured i’d get a head start today.  ❞
❝  i’m afraid i don’t have all of the details of your involvement with the… tragic events in [place]. and i don’t think i’m the only one.  ❞
❝  i’m still not sure i understand the whole tradition.  ❞
❝  whatever it is, it’s chasing me. i can hear it’s footsteps in the snow, i can hear it—  ❞
❝  when you work nights here, the less you really think about them, the better.  ❞
❝  honestly, i just can’t get it out of my head.  ❞
❝  snow is one of nature’s simplest and most effective ways of killing you dead if you aren’t prepared for it.  ❞
❝  i wish you’d tell me what you’re doing here. i could lose my job if anything gets broken or if you end up getting hurt in there…  ❞
❝  would you say you… considered her a friend?  ❞
❝  would you mind saying your name again?  for the recording?  ❞
❝  if that was true, then there was something—and as a scientist, i hate to say this—supernatural going on in that lab.  ❞
❝  most of them didn’t make it. a lot of them died afraid and alone, too.  ❞
❝  i know you don’t like listening to these things, so i just wanted to help you out with…  ❞
❝  if i could sleep, then trust me, i would.  ❞
❝  i’m guessing the new owners are trying to make this place seem less creepy than it already is.  ❞
❝  my schooling was expensive and unremarkable.  ❞
❝  a lot of them died afraid and alone, too:  ideal conditions for the making of poltergeists, in my experience.  ❞
❝  look, i’m sorry, but this really isn’t a good time for anything, so if you wouldn’t mind…  ❞
❝  basically, i was picturing a slightly creepier morticia addams. i couldn’t have been more wrong.  ❞
❝  now i have to deal with [name]’s aspirations to write drama..  ❞
❝  i promise i won’t get you sacked.  ❞
❝  i’ve never been very religious, but for some reason… it made me think of hell.  ❞
❝  i think it may have been a thank you.  ❞
❝  i’m working the graveyard shift and i noticed the lights were on.  ❞
❝  i shouldn’t be here. no one asked me to come in this early.  ❞
❝  everyone around here looks at me like i’m some kind of leper.  ❞
❝  i had to go home for a few hours. i’m already on thin ice around here, and i didn’t want to get in more trouble for screaming obscenities up and down the wall.  ❞
❝  it was… darkness. no, that doesn’t do it credit, the whole place was dark. this was just... void.  ❞
❝  if i’d seen her anywhere else, i’d think she was an athlete or a backpacker.  ❞
❝  better scientists than me have been bashing their heads into that particular wall since 1927.  ❞
❝  i just want you to know that… whatever you really are... you’re safe here.  ❞
❝  goats being goats, it would just come back the next day looking for food.  ❞
❝  i would like you to leave my office now… and i’ll ask you not to tamper with evidence in the future, understood?  ❞
❝  no, of course, i don’t have signal out here, so i can’t just call triple-a.  ❞
❝  what are you doing in my office—at four goddamn thirty in the morning?  ❞
❝  you ever wonder where the line is?  you know, between human and not?  ❞
❝  the funny thing i’ve noticed about war:  no matter how terrible the fighting is, there always seems to be too much waiting. too much quiet. too much sitting around, bored to tears between fits of chaos and violence, lost in routine while waiting for the other shoe to drop.  ❞
❝  a lot of people condemn them for that. we’re so sure we’d never resort to that—that we’d rather die than cross that unspoken boundary.  ❞
❝  i’ve been at the [workplace/institution] for ten years now. that’s long enough to know that the ones who ask questions are the ones who can’t cut it.  ❞
❝  the program blew every fuse in the lab. including the lights.  ❞
❝  it was soon after they left that i began to have trouble sleeping.  ❞
❝  perhaps we never knew each other as well as most friends do, but… we cared for one another.  ❞
❝  most of her questions are a bit above my pay grade.  ❞
❝  i’m trying, i’m trying! i can’t get the door open!  ❞
❝  i don’t know why she needed my help:  i think she had a better grasp of it than most science fiction writers.  ❞
❝  we both had places to be afterwards, so we kind of rushed. i really wish i’d taken the time to say goodbye.  ❞
❝  i guess some things just… don’t want to stay buried.  ❞
❝  it was completely against orders of course, but no one really noticed or cared that far from the front.  ❞
❝  i offered to buy him a cup of coffee.  ❞
❝  newspapers praised them at the time:  saw them as heroes of exploration and paragons of pioneer courage.  ❞
❝  i signed a lot of big, scary nda’s during my time there.  ❞
❝  i did the only thing that came to mind:  i took a grenade from my belt, removed the pin, and threw it.  ❞
❝  i doubt this storm will last more than a couple of days, and once it lets up we can sneak out of here and get going again. very, very carefully.  ❞
❝  given enough time, everything will rot away to its elementary components, and that, you can’t reverse.  ❞
❝  i really can’t see anything from inside the van.  ❞
❝  i knew there were a few experiments that dealt with some pretty high-level theoretical concepts, but i wasn’t directly involved with any of them.  ❞
❝  it’s a strange choice, but then again, he’s a strange man.  ❞
❝  i know, it sounds ridiculous. trust me, i’ve done everything i can think of to make that conclusion go away.  ❞
❝  scared the bejeezus out of a bunch of skiers, but they were nice enough to let me in after deciding i probably wasn’t a ghost.  ❞
❝  please… it burns my skin… please…  ❞
❝  i forgot how fast storms blow in up here.  ❞
❝  it’s not like i felt out of control:  it felt more natural than breathing.  ❞
❝  i didn’t know what i was doing, not at any conscious level. but one step seemed to lead to another, then the next, and then the next.  ❞
❝  it’s called a butcher’s shop in some places, but a mortuary in others. as much as i’d love to imply there was some sweeney todd style recycling going on here, i think the place has just been a lot of things over the years.  ❞
❝  god, these things are creepy as hell.  ❞
❝  if you wouldn’t mind, please, tell us what happened? in your own time, of course.  ❞
❝  it took a few long, nerve-wracking days to work up my courage and visit the section again.  ❞
❝  it’s not that odd to think that people ate each other out there.  ❞
❝  i didn’t think there was a ghost in my room or anything like that, i just kept hearing noises whenever i was about to fall asleep.  ❞
❝  i downed half a dozen energy drinks at 6 and called it dinner—i know, i know, it’s a nasty habit i picked up in grad school.  ❞
❝  they told me that the cpu and motherboard had somehow been melted into a solid lump of plastic and silicon.  ❞
❝  i mean, [name] was a pain in the ass, but at least he didn’t…  ❞
❝  my schedule was full, but i had something else fall through at the last minute. i had your number on my desk, so i thought i may as well call.  ❞
❝  i wonder if it was afraid, or if it even realized what was going to happen. it probably didn’t.  ❞
❝  i need to get more coffee. or punch someone. whichever’s more convenient.  ❞
❝  god, if that’s really how i sound…  ❞
❝  people think i write horror, but i don’t really think that’s true. i just write fiction with all of the comfortable little lies taken out of it.  ❞
❝  i have loved the stars too truly to be fearful of the night.  ❞
❝  i think he felt something about this place… some influence or power that needed to be destroyed, so he tried to do it the only way he knew how.  ❞
❝  well, it’s a tricky thing. the more realistic you make them, the more… unreal they start to look. i think it’s something about the eyes.  ❞
❝  i offered to stay late, just to smooth things over.  ❞
❝  maybe i can get some writing done while i’m stuck here…  ❞
❝  no child could grow up in a jewish home surrounded by books and not read at least one story about golems.  ❞
❝  i just wasn’t a good student, despite my love of reading.  ❞
❝  i have to say, i like your jane doe.  ❞
❝  she was a scientist herself.  maybe not formally, but her way of thinking, her insight, her methods... they were scientist’s qualities.  ❞
❝  seriously, what do i need to do to get a little privacy around here, a little dignity?  hang a  ‘ do not disturb ’  sign on the door?  change all my locks?  ❞
❝  maybe it was stupid, but i figured, ‘ hey, early december, not a cloud in the sky—should still be fine, right? ’  ❞
❝  jesus, [name], i wasn’t born yesterday.  ❞
❝  maybe doing this while it’s still dark outside isn’t the best idea.  ❞
❝  more than a century and a half have passed, and this place is still just as dangerous as it was then.  ❞
❝  now, [mr./ms./mx. name], i’m sure you know why you’re here.  ❞
❝  the [event] was a bust—only about a dozen people showed up all afternoon.  ❞
❝  i never put much stock in the idea of inspiration, but for the first time in my life, it felt like i wasn’t pushing myself through the muck of miscalculation and guesswork towards a solution. i was being pulled towards an answer that already existed.  ❞
❝  it felt like i was a few steps from finding out something fundamental. some truth about our universe that no other scientist had ever dared to dream of.  ❞
❝  huh. that’s… that’s weird. i could’ve sworn there wasn’t a sculpture back there before.  ❞
❝  apparently, no one had told them what i was doing, and i wasn’t actually cleared to leave.  ❞
❝  maybe he’s trying to make amends. keeping watch over these half-living things to make sure no harm comes to them.  ❞
❝  i expected the building to be wreathed in shadow and overgrown with cobwebs, but it's actually really nice.  ❞
❝  sorry, i was trying to get my recorder working, but it froze up on me so i had to find a tape for this old…  ❞
❝  okay. just… don’t get me sacked, alright?  can’t exactly retire on this salary.  ❞
❝  but if it was real—i don’t know if i somehow created it, or if it was feeding me information about itself before it appeared.  ❞
❝  i’ve never had a manic episode before, and i was well below the level of caffeine needed to cause intoxication. as far as i can tell, there isn’t a medical explanation for what happened.  ❞
❝  i don’t get the appeal of meeting real celebrities. it’s just a cheap shock of recognition, and nothing more.  ❞
❝  whatever this… thing was, it sounds pretty dangerous.  ❞
❝  are you familiar with temporal asymmetry?  ❞
❝  i just want to make that abundantly clear:  this /wasn’t/ the plan.  ❞
❝  right then, now let’s get started. please state your name and rank for the record.  ❞
❝  though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light.  ❞
❝  a cracker of a book, young lady.  ❞
❝  no wonder they’re keeping them in storage. they’d give anyone nightmares.  ❞
❝  i was just going to finish out my shift unless… you want me to stick around?  ❞
❝  i went to the university, but don’t remember much of the years i spent there.  ❞
❝  having to study textbooks and essays day in and day out took all of the joy out of reading for a long time.  ❞
❝  we call paradoxes paradoxes for a reason:  no matter how plausible they seem, they can never really happen.  ❞
❝  i don’t know what happened to me that night. i still don’t even know if what i saw was real.  ❞
❝  when we look into the void for too long, we find the monsters instead.  ❞

we want to try and post/reblog more here because this tumblr feels kind of empty still... it’s been a while since we’ve done any kind of intro post (maybe we should pin one? idk) but uh
we’re a plural system with (probably) osdd and we talk about this a lot
collectively we go by mercury, merc, or tragicomedy
we are pretty inconsistent with using we vs i pronouns so i suppose that’s something you must get used to
we also don’t publicly share our system anymore sorry!!!!! some of us are less Shy than others but we don’t like listing our members really in general
our brain junk makes us kind of inconsistent w/ tagging and just. posting frequency/content in general
we live with our partner(s) @villaingender, as well as our enormous cat griffin, and a pet mouse named sven
we make art! sometimes. mostly digital illustration but thinking of getting back into physical media more
interests of ours (ie we either post about these, or want to post about these more):
sayer podcast (and we have a sayer sideblog @projectpaidion)
dissociation, multiplicity, complex trauma and related topics
psychology in general but not in the way i think most psych students mean it (we are an ex-psych major who was too mentally ill for school, lol)
weird/unsettling media, atmospheric/surreal horror, paranormal experiences
illustration, kiiinda (we used to go to art school and uhhh we dont anymore but we still like and use a lot of principles we learned when we make art)
music we especially like:
cardiacs
black dresses
the mountain goats
backxwash
lemon demon/other cicierega stuff
elias and the error
dani lee pearce
we have been on tumblr for. a while. like since 2011. we have pretty much always gone by mercury/merc but our url has changed countless times... for the sake of identification (since i think sometimes people who used to know us find this blog) past interests of ours include:
homestuck (pls dont actually talk to us about homestuck lol)
dangan ronpa (same as above lmao)
ace attorney
fallen london/sunless sea
but uh yea i think that about does it.... we hope you have a good day, whoever is reading this!

Do you listen to tma??? Who’s ur favorite character? (Also I still can’t get over how you pronounce gaud like goat. triggers my fight or flight instinct)
I've been listening for a few years and I am SO excited to see the fandom blowing up. There was hardly any fan content a year ago and now there's a growing abundance. The creators are doing fantastic progressive work and I'm so glad that's being rewarded. As far as I'm concerned it's the premier horror podcast.

5 songs I’ve had on repeat:
The High Cost of Low Living .. Less Than Jake (I put Keep on Chasing on the last meme I did, but I am super digging this whole album)
Yeah Sapphire .. The Hold Steady (this is one of my fave songs in general, and also by THS, but also this is kind of my pump myself up song, and I was listening to it a lot over the past two weeks; and I’ve said it before but “I was a skeptic at first but these miracles work.”)
Rhythm Emotion .. Two-Mix (I have been waiting 40 episodes for this song during my rewatch, then as I’ve been writing my latest recap, I listened to this on repeat as well as found the remix they did because it was the 90s).
Sicilian Crest .. The Mountain Goats (This was the first song I heard off of In League with Dragons since it was the first song they talked about on the I Only Listen to The Mountain Goats podcast before the record came out, and I loved it, and it feels right to bring it forward to 2021. Here is is live).
Lost Again .. Dance Hall Crashers (This song got stuck in my head a few weeks ago, and I’ve had to listen to it like every day again since since, which is crazy because I haven’t listened to DHC in years, but they were awesome).
last movie watched:
We were staying at a hotel this weekend and we were exhausted, so we jut put on Pitch Perfect since it was at the top of the available movies list.
currently reading: “Imaginary Friend” by Stephen Chbosky, and I’m like 60% through, and I’m not sure if I like it? Maybe because I’m listening to it only when running, and it’s very much an homage to other horror (which I like), but on the other hand, I don’t know how this will end so, that’s good? IDK.
currently watching: Still doing a first time ATLA watch, and rewatching Schitt’s Creek with husband who hasn’t seen it. We’re almost done with our Gundam Wing rewatch and then Idk what I’m going to do...
Tagging: anyone who wants to play along because I’m too tired to actually add people

The Monster Hunters 20Qs
@smegandtheheads
Favourite character (male) It’s currently a tie between Sir Maxwell House and Count Orloff. Go figure.
Favourite character (female) Suki, hands down.
Favourite monster Does Count Orloff count (hehe) again? Otherwise, it’s probably Vipera.
Favourite episode The Hell Shaped Room. Just, wow.
Favourite scene I’m gonna go with the entire roommates situation from The Hell Shaped Room. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again - we need a spin-off, like, right now.
Favourite line “You cats are great. Seriously, you crack me up. I love you like brothers or something, or my own sons. Now, get out of my house.”
Favourite relationship (of any kind) Sir Maxwell and the boys, I think? Either that, or Lorrimer/Suki.
Favourite introductory quip (you know, the one-liners from Sir Max’s opening monologues) “Roy Steel, 53% lover, 56% fighter. 109% man. And Lorrimer Chesterfield. In Latin his name means, ‘Lorrimer Chesterfield’.”
How did you find out about the show? I think it was @goalposthead who introduced me to the show, and I’ll forever be grateful that she did.
Have you ever seen it live? Would you like to? If I ever figure out time travel, that’s the first thing I will see to.
What would you hope to see in future episodes? Lorrimer and Suki getting married, and Roy being told about Stewart. Also, more Count Orloff, if you please.
Is there anything you wish you could change about the show? Given how I’m mainly here for the comedy (and the characters) rather than the horror bit, the occasional detours into gruesomeness get a bit too much, sometimes. Also, can someone stop Roy from hurting? Please?
Any headcanons about the characters’ appearance? I basically headcanon the main characters as looking very much like their voice actors, Suki, Orloff, and Griselda included. (I know Suki never actually speaks in the podcast, but she was indeed played by Laura in the live shows.) Rather boring, I know, but it works for me.
How about headcanons about their backstories or any other details? Sir Maxwell is distantly related to Count Orloff, and that’s precisely the reason why Mrs House dropped him in a vat of garlic purée when he was a baby, on purpose. He’s also very asexual, and completely clueless about the whole thing. Both Lorrimer and Suki are demisexual/demiromantic, and Roy is nowhere near as straight as he likes to believe. (Probably pan, doesn’t matter that he doesn’t even know what that means.) He used to have this massive crush on Lord Greg when they were young, and still managed to mistake it for strong admiration or something. Lord Greg, on his part, was perfectly aware of his own attraction for his younger rival, and half the reason why he set out to destroy his reputation was to get his attention. Didn’t exactly work out how he intended it, but hey, maybe third time’s the charm?
If you showed up as a character, what would be your role? You know one of those random characters who get slain by a monster approximately thirty seconds into an episode? That.
Are there any songs you associate with The Monster Hunters? The Mummy’s Hand by the Mountain Goats (Anubis); Dirty Diana (Vipera), Roses (Lorrimer), and Sympathy For The Devil (Lord Greg/Griselda) by The Indelicates; Too Sensible from The Mighty Fin musical Frankenstein and the Sharks of Doom (Sir Maxwell).
Describe a crossover or AU you’d like to see. I’ve been toying with the idea of a Good Omens AU for a while, not sure how to go about that though. Also, there ought to be more crossovers with Time Spanner, Cabin Pressure, and The Infinite Bad. (And possibly some of the Since You Ask Me from JFSP.)
Have you produced any fanworks (art/fic/cosplay/anything)? Links please! I suppose I have. Um.
What other shows/media would you recommend to someone who likes The Monster Hunters? I don’t know, perhaps The Infinite Bad, if you think you can handle a shedload of dread? (Also, if you’re not a fan John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme already, you might want to re-evaluate your life choices.)
Give us a pun and/or a monster fact. The earliest report of a Loch Ness Monster sighting is in the Life of St. Columba, written in the sixth century AD, and is set in the River Ness rather than the namesake Loch. According to his biographer, Columba ordered one of his monks to jump into the waters in order to lure the ‘water beast’ out; when the monster appeared, he commanded it to go back, and never touch another human being again - which apparently it hasn’t, up to this day.

turning this back on you but are there any totally new things you've really enjoyed this year?
okay as a screenwriting major i am cONSTANTLY driven to consume new content so let me try and think what i’ve really enjoyed this year. i’ll probably forget a lot of stuff
well obviously you already know i’ve gotten into spop! after ages of just avoiding it because i didn’t want to deal with the seemingly voltron-esque fandom. and i’m glad i eventually got around to it because i ended up really really enjoying the characters and the worldbuilding and it’s honestly so COOL to see a kids fantasy show done by an lgbt creator and just… how that influences so many small things i might’ve taken for granted
i also recently watched the boys on amazon prime. it’s kind of like this gritty… superhero deconstruction, i guess?? in a period of time where i kind of feel that superheroes… need to be deconstructed. anyway it is EXTREMELY edgy but, again, i really liked the worldbuilding and what it was trying to do and it pretty much gripped me from start to finish
oh aaaand over the course of the summer i did finally get around to checking out the killing eve novels!  which was a really fun experience just, comparing and contrasting them to the show. they don’t have like… the show’s effortless charm and humor but they are REALLY fun spy thrillers with a very interesting, different interpretation of eve and villanelle as characters. the author wrote them eventually running away together and apparently frequently posts on twitter about how they’d probably own cats instead of having children. and he gave eve two pet pygmy goats, thelma and louise (collectively known as “the girls”). so really luke jennings is my kind of guy.
oh speaking of, i also checked out fleabag, which is phoebe waller-bridge’s other most beloved show. it was… god, i feel like i cannot do fleabag justice by pitching it in only a few lines, but i feel like it’s something everyone should watch. it’s just… so funny and unapologetic in that way pwb is so good at, but also incredibly poignant and bittersweet and intelligent. like just. QUALITY quality television. fleabag is so good. and it’s a very short watch
i also (gasp) watched rwby this year! which i probably never would have done on my own (and no, @ everyone you’re still not allowed to rec me anime just because i liked it.) but i have some rp friends who are big into it and a couple of their portrayals just… really made me fall in love with the characters, so i decided i wanted to see them in canon! as you know im the kind of person who like, TOTALLY glazes over during extended fight scenes, and it has a lot of those, but i ended up being fond of it anyway just cause it has so much… heart and lots of COOL LADIES with focus on their relationships
movie wise i think my favorite thing that’s come out this year was midsommar, which is by the same guy who did hereditary. it’s sort of this… folk horror/fairy tale/break up movie/revenge fantasy combo and i don’t really know how to rec it because ari aster’s movies are SO intense on so many different levels, but is a GORGEOUS, visceral film that i really connected with and also just drooled over a lot from a filmmaker’s perspective,
then my favorite new thing to come out of hbo this year was chernobyl, which… hoh boy, chernobyl. what can i even say. it’s such a well made, respectful, NECESSARY retelling of a very important event in human history that’s still… very relevant in so many ways today. it’s just harrowing to watch at times but it’s also one of those things where i’m like, in awe of how good it is, and i LOVE just… idk, learning about history, so i was big into it
brief shoutout to slasher solstice which i just remembered existed. i guess i’ll count it as a new thing because slasher is like, an anthology series, so totally new story. it was some dumb campy bullshit but i had so much fun watching it
oh my god. and that reminds me i have to include. DEMONS.  sorry for putting that in all caps and bold, i realize that looks kind of threatening. i was just gonna mention “yeah josh and i have been watching some more dario argento movies lately” but no i need to mention demons specifically, which is like, one of the funniest, campiest, gory horror franchises from the 80′s i have ever fucking seen in my life. these movies are so. SO weird. and silly. but i’ve been like fucking obsessed with them ever since we sat down and watched the first one
uhh what else… i started luther and enjoyed what i saw of it a lot, i should watch more of that…
oh to include a podcast, i’ve been listening to this podcast will kill you on and off! it’s done by two med students and each episode is about a different infectious disease and i know that SOUNDS weird but listen i am learning SO much. did you know that wwii was in part indirectly caused by the spanish influenza pandemic? did you know that werewolf and vampire lore was largely drawn from people’s fear of rabies? did you know that the smallpox vaccine was the first one ever created and before that, people didn’t think vaccinations worked? NOW YOU DO. it’s kind of morbid but i’m like, SO interested in the history of disease and how it affected human society and it goes into a lot of that kind of stuff

For the last few years we have relied on the expert taste of Adam Maid to make sure we didn't miss any of the best music, TV, books and movies of the previous year. Why Adam? Because he consumes it all. But first, real quick: I would like to know what your favorite piece of media to come out of 2021 was. Movie? TV Show? Book? Song? Food? Whatever! I plan on sharing a list of our readers' favorite things  next week, and this is your chance to be a part of it! Just fill out this super short form and you're a part of the official SPT 2021 Going Away Celebration! Take it away, Adam!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2021! We got vaccines! Live music and movies came back! Sparks finally got the credit they deserve! And also a lot of bad stuff happened, but we're not going to think about that now! Here are some of the highlights from what was a really solid year in pop culture. Pig (movie) - A lot of the buildup for this movie made it sound like Nic Cage's John Wick—his pig gets stolen, he has to get it back—but the movie itself has other ideas. Instead, it only jabs a metaphorical pencil through your eye with how deftly and beautifully it examines themes of loss, forgiveness, and empathy. Lucy Dacus - Home Video (music) - Nobody writes sharper lyrics than Lucy Dacus, and by sharp I mean they are daggers. Every one of her songs has an exquisitely crafted knife hiding inside of it. And she also just makes great rock music.  It Never Ends - Tom Scharpling (book) - Tom is, as the kids say, goated. Already the funniest person working in any of his other mediums (shoutout to his Double Threat podcast with Julie Klausner for making me laugh and rewind and laugh again more than anything else for the past two years), this is Tom's first book, and it is so much bigger and deeper than a typical comedy memoir. He promised he would make us both laugh and cry and, well, the rat bastid did it.  Midnight Mass (TV) - I can't really write about Midnight Mass without first writing an appreciation of its creator, Mike Flanagan. Nobody has understood the importance of the human side of horror since early Stephen King (which is probably why he's ended up adapting several King novels). This is his third Netflix series—following The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, both also excellent—and his most emotionally affecting work yet. I don't want to give too much away on the plot, but I highly recommend if for nothing more than Hamish Linklater CRUSHING it.  Dinosaur Jr - Sweep It Into Space (music) - What a band. What an album. They're still as vital as ever. Yellowjackets (TV) - [pounding on table] Yellowjackets. Yellowjackets. YELLOWJACKETS. Just check it out. You will not regret it (except for the part where you can't sleep later). Melanie Lynskey is undefeated. Revelator - Daryl Gregory (book) - I loved this book for a lot of reasons, but most of all for Daryl Gregory's always-impeccable flair for writing full, compelling characters. The rest of it is pretty great, too: Appalachian moonshining, family secrets, a strange god who lives in a mountain? Southern Gothic cosmic horror? Yes and thank you. The Mitchells vs. the Machines (movie) - If you're reading this newsletter, chances are you've heard the names Phil Lord and Chris Miller at some point. Whether it's their own project (Clone High, The Lego Movie) or something they've produced (Mitchells, Into the Spider-Verse), their worlds are bursting with creativity and their stories HIT. Their latest, co-written and directed by Jeff Lowe and Michael Rianda, is the story of the robot apocalypse and the family trying not to fall apart at the seams as they save the world. It is wonderful. A Little Devil in America - Hanif Abdurraqib (book) - A new release from Hanif Abdurraqib is a first-day, when-the-bookstore-opens kind of event. His writing in A Little Devil in America is as impeccable as ever, seamlessly combining memoir, cultural commentary, history, and love letter into a series of essays on Black performance that are as empathetic and vulnerable as they are ecstatic. You'll never hear "Gimme Shelter" again without wanting to give Merry Clayton her roses, too. No One Is Talking About This - Patricia Lockwood (book) - As someone with professionally mandated Social Media Brain, the first half of this book was a rousing joyride of weird, dumb Twitter moments I should be ashamed I remember. As an uncle, the second half was a rousing roundhouse kick straight to the solar plexus.  Painting with John (TV) - In the early 90s, actor/musician/artist John Lurie had a show on IFC called Fishing with John, in which he'd invite famous friends like Jim Jarmusch, Dennis Hopper, and Tom Waits out on different fishing expeditions. None of them know how to fish, on one occasion he and Willem Dafoe die at the end of an episode, and let me tell you it is a perfect show. Last year HBO got Lurie, now living on an unnamed Caribbean island, to come back for a new show, in which he crashes drones and ostensibly teaches you how to paint. It's like Bob Ross, if Bob Ross painted surreal watercolors and told messed up stories from New York in the 80s.  Riders of Justice (movie) - Mads Mikkelsen stars as a soldier returning home to care for his daughter after his wife is killed in a train accident. Sounds like the setup to a fun comedy, right? Well, it turns out, yeah. Enter a trio of statistics and computer dorks who are convinced the accident was no accident, and enlist Mads to investigate the local gang they believe responsible. This is character-driven comedy done right, to dark and rewarding effect.  Hey Ramsey, look over there! (Okay, folks, that will distract him for several minutes. Here are some more things I really liked this year.) Movies: The Beta Test, The Card Counter, Annette, Never Gonna Snow Again, Dune, Malignant, Zola, Titane, Shiva Baby, The Deep House, The Last Duel, Licorice Pizza Books: Filthy Animals - Brandon Taylor, Velvet Was the Night - Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Mike Nichols: A Life - Mark Harris, Nightbitch - Rachel Yoder, My Heart Is a Chainsaw - Stephen Graham Jones, Beautiful World, Where Are You - Sally Rooney TV: The White Lotus, I Think You Should Leave, Squid Game, Succession, Reservation Dogs, Hawkeye, Arcane: League of Legends, Made for Love, Kenan Music: Julien Baker - Little Oblivions, Japanese Breakfast - Jubilee, Reigning Sound - A Little More Time, The Mountain Goats - Dark in Here, Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen - "Like I Used To", BLACKSTARKIDS - Puppies Forever, Laura Stevenson - Laura Stevenson, James Blake - Friends That Break Your Heart, Action/Adventure - Pulling Focus
