St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh. One of many original watercolours I painted in the 1990’s of Auld Reekie (Edinburgh) which were reproduced as limited edition prints. This one was particularly challenging getting the golden sunlit stone of the Cathedral to reflect convincingly in the wet rain soaked road and pavement. Thistle Chapel, St Giles‘ Cathedral, Royal Mile, Edinburgh.

King David I founded St Giles’ in 1124, during which time the bond between Rome and the Scottish church was becoming closer. St Giles’ was built on the very eastern edge of Edinburgh and pre-dates most of the Old Town. When David I later founded the Abbey of Holyrood he gave the abbot permission to build houses up the ridge towards St Giles’, establishing the Canongate burgh and forming what is now known as the Royal Mile.

The Order of the Thistle has roots in the Middle Ages, but the present-day order was largely created in 1687 by King James VII of Scotland (King James II of England). The nave of Holyrood Abbey was adapted as its chapel, but in 1688 the Abbey was ransacked by the Edinburgh mob, furious at King James’ Roman Catholic allegiance. After that, the Knights of the Thistle had no chapel of their own for over 200 years.

The Thistle Chapel was designed by Robert Lorimer and finished in 1911. It contains stalls for the 16 knights, the Sovereign’s stall and two Royal stalls. The chapel contains a wealth of detail, both religious and heraldic, and much of it peculiarly Scottish, including angels playing bagpipes.

St. Giles Cathedral was interesting for me because although we never went inside the church, we walked past it every day that we were in Edinburgh. From the pictures of the inside I've seen though, it is beautiful. 

St. Giles Cathedral was founded by King David I in 1124 when the Roman Catholic Church and the Scottish Church had a very close bond. Several things happened in the history of the church, but the most notable in the Reformation was the arrival of John Knox. John Knox was a Protestant Reformer who was appointed minister of St. Giles Cathedral in 1559. During his time there, the church and the country as a whole were declared Protestant despite having Mary Queen of Scots (Bloody Mary), a devout and intolerant Catholic, as the ruler of the country. 

What surprised me most was John Knox’s burial site. John Knox was buried in a graveyard right outside the cathedral along with many others, but when building expansion happened, the graveyard was moved along with all of its occupants other than John Knox, who was kept in what would today become parking place 23.
