Albums that I'm waiting to be released in 2023
New year, new tricks. And lots of music.
There are some albums I'm waiting to be released, although not without hesitation. Looking back at 2022, it was quite dry on my bubble. Singles, EPs... Droplets of what's to come. 2021 I had more difficulties deciding what was my favourite of that year :D
But anyways, what I'm waiting for?
VNV Nation - Electric Sun
I respect VNV Nation, even though I'm not the biggest fan. Every album has their moments (Empires still kicks ass as a whole), but I realise the clubby songs are my favourites. Noire from 2018 was bleh.
My biggest fear will be, how pompous the album will be... Considering Ronan Harris has been into those orchestral conserts lately. Noire already had songs heavily influenced by orchestral music.
Neuroticfish - The Demystification Of The Human Heart
Neuroticfish has been active on remix front past few years and those remixes have been good. I still listen Gelb and songs from Sign of Life and Les Chansons Neurotiques frequently. However, their 2018 album Antiodoron is something I've never managed to listen from beginning to end...
I don't know why that album never caught on with me. But I sure hope Sasha and Henning found their mojo again. Instrumental "Sleep" from Velocity N20 has good sound and very techno vibes. But We'll see how they manage to demystificate the human heart.
Blackcarburning – Watching Sleepers
Mark Hockings from Mesh has been busy with the side project of his. Releasing three EPs in 2022, I can say material sounds different enough from "modern" Mesh (sheesh, Looking Skyward came in 2016...), that Blackcarburning is an different entity. I think it has more rougher sound, which reminds on 90's Mesh material though...
What makes me worried though, is that the b-side songs from the EPs have been better (on my ears) than the title songs that are on the album. So how will this album be in the end, when I know it could've had song like "Happiness"? And apparently this album has been ready for quite some time.
mind.in.a.box. in 2023?
Tumblr media
I sure hope we get a new MIAB album this year! Broken Legacies was awesome (2017...) and Stefan Poiss has been quiet after that. Some remixes what I gather. Television Nation song came in 2020 and it was okay, apparently quite Nine Inch Nails like song.
New Helix EP in 2023?
Tumblr media
Assemblage 23 is my favourite, but I'm not expecting new material until 2024. But side-project Tom Shear has with Mari Kattman (Mari Shear) has been damn solid. Their 2021 EP Bad Dream was close second as my album of the year. What they have in store? How different it will be?

LOOMEC. Oh LOOMEC. Everything touched by Stefan Poiss turns into my very-healthy-obsession. I almost don’t understand German, though, but it’s not a problem, because THIS VOICE~ I can’t stop laughing when I listen to this song. Brilliant, really.

I sure love when Stefan Poiss adds his own vocals to some of the remixes he does. Makes them duets :D

Dreamweb, a weird follow up?
mind.in.a.box. has been one of my favourites for many years. Sci-fi, cyberpunk infused futurepop, trance like music, that has detoured to synthpop territory at times. Albums tell a story, which make the lyrics quite interesting.
Lost Alone, one of my comfort albums. Memories, just fantastic. Broken Legacies, highly recommend it. R.E.T.R.O. makes me wish I was nostalgic about 8-bit computers.
Besides Revalations, which I haven't really listened because I don't own it, there is one album MIAB's discography, that is bit difficult to judge in my mind.
Dreamweb.
Lost Alone was apparently quite popular album when it was released in 2004, that follow up, Dreamweb, came next year!
If I had to describe the album, it has the same feel in away as Lost Alone. Sound is more cleaner feeling and punchier.
However, I've listened it quite a few times. Sometimes it feels great, sometimes bit lukewarm. I wouldn't say it's bad, album has its moments (Certainty, Sun and Storm, Out of Time, The Dream).
What is it that makes this album weird?
Stefan Poiss (singer, producer), doesn't use nearly as much vocal filters. He uses his normal voice quite a bit. Song structure uses the basic verse-bridge-chorus-verse we all know and love, but for some reason it doesn't feel like it?
But most of all, I would say story takes the center stage on this album more than others. It's probably easiest to follow the story compared to other albums, when on others the instrumentation takes the center stage.
At least I feel like it. When I listen Memories, I enjoy the instrumentation quite a bit, while vocals come close second. If I had to say which album strikes the balance the best, it would be Broken Legacies.
I guess best way I could describe Dreamweb would be "flat", not bad in any means, but feels like it treads the same line throughout the album.
