Can rainbow trouts live in the ocean?
I'm so glad you asked!
Daily fish fact #408
Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)!
Tumblr media
Rainbow trout is a name that interestingly only refers to the mostly or entirely freshwater-living populations of the species Oncorhynchus mykiss. However some Oncorhynchus mykiss populations live most of their lives in saltwater, swimming up rivers to spawn much like other salmonids! Those tend to be called steelheads. So, if by rainbow trout you mean the whole species Oncorhynchus mykiss, then yes!

SALMONIDS of ALASKA The bane of my existence for the entirety of 2020 and part of 2021: the salmon poster. You've seen the separate illustrations, but now, finally, here is the full thing.
This entire project was a journey. I had never illustrated fish before, let alone in this much detail. I have retained an appropriate hatred of scales and fin rays from this project. But also a persistent joy from having created these illustrations, and appreciation for what beautiful animals these salmon are. Putting together the poster, making all elements fit together and - not unimportantly - making the poster fit its allotted space on the wall was an additional endeavour.
It is currently displayed aboard the David B, the vessel of Northwest Navigation who commissioned this piece. If you're interested in having a copy of your own, you can contact them. For now I hope you enjoy reading this (if you open the image in a separate tab, I made it big enough to read) - and mayhaps learn something new about the intriguing world of salmon! I certainly did.

The Miss-Fortunes had a rocky start, which ultimately justified their squad name. After a sour end to a Salmon Run, Tea gets injured and left behind by her co-workers. Fortunately, Lieutenant Sweetpea took pity on her… And this is where their friendship started!
EDIT: I’m now turning this into a miniseries comic! Start on pages 1 – 2 here!

Daily fish fact #657
Trouts!
Tumblr media
Trouts is a common name used for a group of salmonids from varied different genera! Typically, a common definition to separate trout from salmon says that trout are fully freshwater fish and never migrate to seas and oceans like salmon do, but much like how there are fully freshwater populations of salmon.. there are very much also populations of trouts that migrate to live in saltwater, like a "subgroup" of rainbow trout called steelheads. It's a line drawn in water, but that's alright! Language and terms are that way sometimes.
