found this rove beetle inside on a loaf of bread, and assumed it was just lost, finding comfort in a damp, dark place. but when i put it outside with a slice, it really tore into it!

Bug of the Day
Found this really cool rove beetle larva (Staphylinidae sp.) in one of my pitfall traps the other night. Not sure I will be able to id it past family, but it was still a neat find.

#2023 - Paederus sp. - Whiplash Beetle
Tumblr media
There were quite a few of these running around the beach on Cooleenup Island - they would have been harder to spot on the black mulch elsewhere.
The various Paederus species can be told apart by checking which parts of the body are red (at least for the species in Australia) but since there's almost 150 species in the genus worldwide, and another 450-odd closely related rove beetles, I'm reluctant to speculate exactly which one this is.
Some Whiplash Beetles are infamous for the toxin in their blood (helpfully advertised by their black, red and sometimes blue or green iridescent warning colours) which can cause serious dermatitis or conjunctivitis in humans. They've been proposed as one of the Ten Plagues of Egypt. The poison is produced by symbiotic bacteria carried by the beetles.
