Snake Eyes (1998)

I only watched Snake Eyes because I had it on VHS tape and the box was badly damaged. If it was any good I’d upgrade to DVD. If it wasn’t, the space it occupied could be used for something else. Final verdict? I wouldn’t call it a classic, but I enjoyed the film more than I didn’t.

Rick Santoro (Nicolas Cage) is a corrupt police detective attending a boxing match with his friend Kevin (Gary Sinise). When one of the fighters knocks out his opponent, an assassin guns him down. Everyone panics, particularly Kevin - he was the victim’s bodyguard. While Rick follows the clues to try and solve the case and help his friend, he uncovers a conspiracy that will test even his blackened soul.

There are some big twists in the film and I want to avoid spoiling any surprises. The revelations are not particularly devastating. It's merely that figuring out who did what and how that person is connected with this other one is the fun part and the knots to unravel vary greatly in difficulty. The enjoyable aspect of the film is that it’s about people running around trying to find each other in an attempt to get a leg up on the situation, expose someone, or take them out. The clues gradually discovered by Rick are fun to examine and as some scenes are shown a second time from a different angle to reveal new information, Brian De Palma’s trademark cinematography and shooting style shine. We get several long shots that had to require careful rehearsals or sharp improvisational skills from the performers. A standout scene is a point where a characters’ vision (or lack thereof) is used to create unique situations and tension. The supporting characters, how they tie into the main plot - or turn out to be mere red herrings - are fun boxes to tick. Nicolas Cage’s character has some good moments as he finds himself reconsidering the things he’s done during his not-so-stellar career.

The film is at its weakest during the conclusion, which is conventional and introduces an unnecessary romance. Not helping is the puzzling final shot. Still, it's enjoyable while it lasts and the good outweighs the bad.

Snake Eyes doesn't have much re-watch value, but that’s ok. It’s the kind of movie you rent (or go see in the theatre back in 1998), enjoy, and then not think about ever again. I’ll be generous and give it a 3.5 / 5. (On VHS, September 24, 2015)

Thoughts : The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (1979)

When you look at the range of ethnicity and culture represented in sports today, it’s hard to think that many of the athletes that share grounds were barred from doing so by laws and regulations, some as recently as two generations ago.  A glaring example of this exclusionary practice due to race was Major League Baseball and their barring of African-American ballplayers, leading to the creation of the Negro Leagues.  Because this league was not recognized or sanctioned by MLB at the time, many of its records and the feats accomplished have been relegated to the realm of legend and hearsay.  Berry Gordy, with the power bestowed upon him via Motown Studios, saw an opportunity to bring stories like that of the Negro League to the big screen, and the result is the entertaining but often unrecognized gem that is The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings.

Famed Negro League pitcher Bingo Long (Billy Dee Williams) finds himself looking for independence after league owner Sallison Potter (Ted Ross) attempts to put Bingo’s colleague Rainbow (DeWayne Jessie) on a bus home after a wild pitch knocks him out and takes his ability to speak.  Bingo reaches out to fellow star Leon Carter (James Earl Jones), and with a bit of convincing, the two start up The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, a collection of the best talent from the Negro League with plans to barnstorm their area of the country in search of games and financial freedom.  In light of what they consider insubordinate behavior, Potter and the rest of the Negro League owners make attempts to sabotage and intimidate Bingo and his crew into returning to their teams.  Despite the hard times they face, Bingo and Leon attempt to keep their team together in hopes that they can help each man earn their own living and, in a best case scenario, perhaps change the game they love forever (that is, until the Major Leagues decide to accept Negro talent).

Baseball has always served as a symbol for America and its value system, so it’s only fair that Bingo Long serves as an allegory for attaining that American dream by whatever means you can, which in the case of this film would be unionizing.  On top of this symbolism, the main three characters served as surrogates for real life Negro League ballplayers, some of whom eventually broke the color barrier.  Bingo Long was connected to Satchel Paige by both position and personality, Leon Carter’s power and larger than life presence mirrored real life home-run machine Josh Gibson, and Esquire Joe was an amalgamation of Jackie Robinson’s role as the breaker of the color barrier with the raw talent of Willie Mays.

The parallels to real life do not end in those comparisons with other ballplayers.  The all-star team that Bingo’s team faced at the end of the movie used real life former Negro League players as stand-ins, while Sallison’s ballpark is currently being used to this day by the minor league Savannah Bananas.  The presentation of the superstar life presented fit the times as well, with the speakeasy fresh out of the shadow of Prohibition, car culture growing into its own, and the ability to travel and experience the open road becoming an allure that both square and counterculture would indulge in.

As for production, the costuming more than matched the bar set by other Motown productions, with the uniforms popping off the screen as equally as the sharp suits did.  The car choices were also top notch, bringing a classic air to the proceedings that befits the film’s title.  A few of the glamour/action shots come off as back lot shots, but that can be pardoned considering that first time director John Badham was transitioning into film from a television career.  One of the things that did not age well, in my opinion, was the portrayal of the Jewish characters, as they leaned a bit too heavy on stereotypes... an earmark of the times, but one that did not transition well as the years have gone by.

Billy Dee Williams gets to relish in a chance to play against type, muting the suaveness and sophistication he was normally known for in light of a more colloquial, down-to-earth hustler, which he does convincingly.  James Earl Jones brings his larger than life energy to the screen with thunderous line reads, statuesque integrity and a grin that could light up a room.  Richard Pryor does some supreme slick-talking as a constant schemer looking for a way to sneak into the Major Leagues.  Stan Shaw (an extremely young version) bursts off the screen with tons of youthful energy and enthusiasm, making him the easiest to connect to out of the extensive cast.  DeWayne Jessie puts in a formidable silent performance for the majority of his screen time, managing to pull laughs and pity out of the viewer with equal ease.  Ted Ross is horribly despicable as Sallison Potter, and his interactions with Mabel King are full of improvisational comedic energy.  Ken Foree and Carl Gordon come off as true threats, and appearances by Tony Burton, Rico Dawson, Sam ‘Birmingham’ Brison, Jophery Brown, Leon Wagner, and John McCurry round things out.

The Wiz may have the cult following, and Mahogany may be considered the shining star of Motown productions, but when it comes to a balance of fun, production and heartfelt nature, you really can’t go wrong with The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings.  It gives me the same feelings that A League of Their Own did, and I feel like I may screen them together in the near future.
