Holy shit, this episode will have silenced the people who complain about spy x family being boring for sure. Not just one of the best spyxfamily episodes, but one of the best episodes of the season. Nonstop action and sakuga from start to finish.

Absolutely amazing direction and choreography during the Yor fights. Loved the shot of the camera panning around as Yor takes on an entire circle of baddies. They went so hard with this one. The fight scene being perfectly synced with the fireworks was awesome as well

I liked the whole moment when Yor realises that she’s basically doing all of this for money as well lol.

Since last week, Yor’s had a little identity crisis, wondering why she does her job and who she’s actually fighting to protect. She finally has her answer and is back with a renewed since of purpose. Can’t wait for the next episode 🙏🏾

The siscon side story was a nice endcap to the episode.

Spy x Family OP3: Kura Kura

Okay, there's a lot of stuff that I'm unfamiliar with in terms of proper names and terms with this opening, but it's just so damn cool that I have to talk about it. Building on the styles of the first two openings, it brings a sense of familiarity that's completely outshone by the incredibly creative approach that OP3 brings with it.

Yes, it's the best Spy x Family opening even though the new season isn't out yet. That's what Masaaki Yuasa gets you (go check out the Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken OP)

Alright so first off, the opening cut of our characters. I love everything about it. The energy, the perspective, the color design. It's all super great, and the icing on the cake is the punchy animation that accentuates and exaggerates the movements of the characters.

Also, the music really is just a perfect match. I'm not a big Ado fan myself, but this is just an impeccable choice.

Anyways, right away the opening sets the tone for the very unique approach to animation. Quite smooth, but very snappy at times, if I were to explain it. I'm not doing a frame by frame to check or anything, but they're certainly hanging on quite a few sequences before squeezing others in or making large movements between frames. Just look at how each of the characters joins the sequence, there's actually a good deal of movement hidden in the appearance.

Though I think my favorite part from this sequence is the simplicity in wiping the characters when a new one appears. Given the style of movement and the "blink and you'll miss it" speed of it, it brings the addition to the viewer's attention and immediately while adding a good deal of unique feel.

And then there's this follow up piece. There's not much to it in terms of importance or anything but I love it. It's an extension of the dot matrix background and using it to place color on top of a dull background is very fun (also the rainbow at the top).

I think one of the things that felt absent from both prior OPs was a sense of "wow factor" in how they displayed Yor (and Loid). OP2 brings us a Yor assassin cut, but it feels more pretty and fleeting than exciting and energetic, as expected given the tone of it. Anyways, I'm very happy to see them able to explore the energy of each in this opening.

Also, the way that Yor's spike wipes the frame to introduce Loid? I love it. It's such a chaotic opening that you can easily miss simple things like transitions that can get lost in all the information. Another side note, I really like that Loid only appears when he fires his gun. Just a fun little trick that falls into place alongside other examples of wiping the frame in the opening.

Of course, Anya (and bond) gets their own splash cut like this. Really like how it places Anya on her own stage as it steps away from the style used for Loid and Yor and uses "environment" (read: speech bubbles) to convey her ability and its cons. And another very interesting detail (there's no end to them)! The use that dot matrix style to swap Anya and Bond out between each other. Super easy to miss, but it's there as one of those transitions that you can easily miss.

Wiping the frame, I can't think of a better name for it but it's something that's well loved with the direction of this OP. Just following these cuts we get another of our fearless family, but we see a different trick used. Also, really love the idea of it being framed as circus that Anya runs, so accurate to children and especially Anya.

Anyways, the idea is actually a lack of animation. Crazy, but given the style of animation through these cuts with the focus on snappy and exaggerated movements, it fits right in and looks really interesting. Furthermore (yes, there's still more), the use of visual sound effects (which say: 'Kankakeinai', most likely meant to be 'Kankeinai' as that's what's said by Ado at this point in the song.) is a great way to bridge the gap from Anya's previous cut to this one.

Oh, I should have mentioned it, but that same text-usage matching the song appears in the previous Anya and Bond cuts too.

Alright, next cut but also one (a little) further down the line: water animation. Lovely stuff. It's not realistic like what you'd see in the ending for My One-Hit Kill Sister, but has a lot of heart in it nonetheless, aiming to blend with the OP rather than make a statement about its quality.

Man, I almost forgot that there's a sequence in reverse in the OP. It's just that crazy. I've shown enough gifs of stuff so I'll spare the trouble (and save it for later) by just sharing a still. It's well animated, obviously, but aside from it being in reverse, there's just one detail to make note of: the dot matrix. It appears as an airplane for just a split second as a way to begin dissolving it from the frame (though it can be hard to make out because Tumblr compression). A very sneaky and subtle way to continue on with the direction established from the start.

There's lots of tricks in this OP, isn't there? I suppose it's rather similar to the Anya circus one, but slightly different. Keeping in line with the near impossibly hectic style of animation in the opening, we see frame-by-frame cuts alongside some of the best animated sequences. It helps keep that balance, you know? Where we give up on sharpness with some of the faster and more fluid movements, we make up with via these rougher ones.

Also, would it really be Masaaki Yuasa without some freakishly well animated cuts? Animating cars can already be a challenge in the first place, but not only do we see one heavily featured here, we see it spinning around wildly with characters in it. It's a crazy feat that only madmen like Masaaki would attempt.

Anyways, don't you dare underestimate Yuasa's insanity. He made people animate a reflection in a teapot. For like a 3 second cut. No, really, he did. Look at this ridiculously pointless detail.

Okay okay, it's time to wind down a little bit. The wonderfully creative perspective of the OP. It's mostly the cars, but on the more simple sub-to-plane cut it's featured in a more subtle sense just to add something to it, you know? Just to give viewers something a little more interesting to look at.

Alright, last cut I promise. I was very surprised, and equally impressed, to see this skydive sequence as a single cut. I thought for sure it was going to be split, but keeping it in one piece was a great decision.

And that's all I think I will chat about, because if I don't call it quits somewhere I'll never stop. Seriously, that's just how full and dense this opening is. For instance, just look at the bottom left image from the gallery above, Anya's drinking tea all fancy like. Crazy little detail that you wouldn't see unless you paused the opening. And this is full of that kind of stuff alongside the incredible and distinct direction and style of Yuasa. It's a gold mine of creativity and expression that only the man himself would be able to pull off, and I love it. Best Spy x Family opening and another to add to the list of incredible OPs this year.

SxF 24: Family is a safe space

SpyxFamily is a manga/anime that can be read on different levels. Under the funny, mundane situations shown, we can learn about the war's horror and consequences, the dark side of politics; the gray areas of human nature, and how clumsy we can be when our feelings are involved. Episode 24 excels in building these layers and shows the real meaning behind all these missions and adventures. SpyxFamily is not about romance; action; nor friendship but about the idea that family is, above anything else, a safe space.

Twilight, Yor, and even Anya trying to befriend Desmond share a common goal: to make a the world better place not only for children to grow up in peace; but also for broken adults who need a place to call home; a place where they can be themselves, with their weakness and their imperfections, and their bad habits and good deeds.

Romance is not the main theme of the cute and funny disastrous date, but the fact that Yor finds unbearable just the idea of losing Loid (*coughcough*), but Anya and their home. The fact that she is willing to sacrifice her safety for the sake of Twilight’s happiness, and that what Twlight values of her is not something as the house chores but the safe space that she provides and that validates her as family is WAY more important that the cute and funny romance scene.

This is what family is all about: people who protects, and cares each other. And it is about bonds, not about blood.

This is also family (and love and unsolved sexual tension. It was a nice touch that they brought this scene back)

But what amazed me about this episode was, well linked the safe space idea was linked to Anya’s and Becky’s shopping spree. Once I read it in the manga, I found this mission a little bit boring but here in the anime just fitted perfectly and I was absolutely charmed by it.

Yes, we got a super cute Anya wearing different outfits, but we have the limits of a literal safe space (Becky rents the whole gallery!) blurred by the safe space that Anya builds. There, Becky can be her better self (bossy yet caring; selfish yet open).

And that’s what Desmond sees when the two friends walk to school that day. He has a crush on Anya because well, she is damn cute, but also because she can be herself, with her flaws and weirdness, because she is loved and has a safe space (a family) where she can thrive. And that's something he, a 6-year-old, very sadly lacks.

So yes, surprise, surprise: SpyXFamily is about … family. A safe space for us.

have you considered that this song is a song for the forger family (mostly and loid and anya story) from the POV of loid? I have.

I think the beginning of the song, the forger family is hanging out having a Normal Day but something happens and they find out Anya can read minds. Anya explains everything about her powers and even mentioning that bond can see the future as well. loid realizes that "oh wow my kid has known all this time and she has been hiding it. she could be a great spy (<- does not want that, actually) and he kinda kicks himself for that being his first thought "she's gonna be a lot like me, but I don't want to be at all like me"

she is bawlling about this cause shes terrified that shes going to be sent away again (or killed cause mama is an assassin) but yor says "stranger things than death can happen to labrat girls and pretty white dogs [rabbits]" trying to comfort her kid. reassuring her that she's going to be okay and she's staying right with her family. from there, loid tells wise that his daughter reads minds, it takes some convincing but he eventually gets through to them that, no he isn't joking and yes, he is serious. he's seen some shit and after looking into it a bit more that yeah holy shit lab rat girl. this isn't his first Christmas, he knows a mistletoe when he sees it and all that. after that, loid tells her to play along. wise knows what's going on and they want to run a few tests and such. Anya FREAKS the FUCK out but she calms down (a little) after loid starts joking with her. eventually he ends up making the joke "well afterwards will you tell me if I'm still pretty?"

he thinks it's a lousy joke but Anya lights up and starts laughing and laughing. she loves it. it calms her down enough for her to take some tests and wise to get the information they need. but every time they go in, anya comes out looking worse and worse.

then loid begins to realize that they are taking advantage of his kid. he's realized that this isn't "just for the mission" at this point and now he's worried that his daughter is getting hurt. he knows she hates these tests but he's still taking her. and he starts to question why.

he ends up talking to yor about everything, being a spy, where hes been taking anya, and what he thinks wise is doing to their girl.

yor is lowkey pissed. how dare they even lay a hand on anya, and she kinda goes off on him, saying that what wise is doing is wrong. she isn't a tool for some non-existent war and that Anya is the best thing to happen for both of them. they need to look back at what their family has really been like. (look through the pockets of the hand me downs we've layed out) and he needs to start thinking about his life as a father and a husband.

at some point, weather it be when yor called him on his shit or when anya comes out of the testing room in near tears, loid realizes what he's doing is wrong.

and he leaves wise.

and they are nooot happy about it. they keep trying to stalk him and his family and they keep getting into all of their business. and so now loid has explained to Anya what's going on. that these people are "old friends" and they aren't very nice. so he needs her to be on her best behavior and be very very careful. just play along. Anya, who obviously is still scared cause she's like. 5, loid repets that bad joke he made at the start of this whole thing "and afterwards will you tell me if I'm still pretty?" a while has passed and they've gotten somewhat comfortable. they are still being stalked by wise but they haven't made any big moves. and one day, Anya and yor have come home from walking bond, she's recently gotten a bike, but she's scraped her knee. they get it cleaned up and she's taken back home and tucked into bed for the night. and wise makes their move. they attack the forger household, and yor and loid have to start fighting, they both have been in large scale fight before but this one particularly hurts loid. these are the people who he's been working with for years and now he has to fight them?? because they won't just let him be happy?? with his family?? eventually they are outnumbered and they have to take Anya and run. Anya is confused and scared and she doesn't know what's going on. loid figures that, while she is a smart ass kid, she needs something less scary right now.

it's a game of intense tag, he needs to run away from everyone and then they will all win! (just like in the first or second episode) they run and run, all the while loid is kicking himself in the ass, what's wrong with him? how did he let this happen?? wise is still on their tail and eventually they've been surrounded. loid and yor are good but they are just two people. they keep fighting, trying to protect their daughter but. eventually they get taken out. yor was too lethal so she ended up having to be killed. bond was muzzled. and loid was subdued and Anya was taken away. as Anya is being taken away from him, he wants to hold her, tell her things are going to be okay, hell he'd even make that stupid joke again if it could make her laugh, but he's too stricken with grief and regret to word it properly. all he can say is "could you tell me how"

Aw bond focused finale was awesome! Had forgot about the big guy it’s been a while since he got some shine and boy did he come up clutch today.

This was actually the perfect way to cap off the season, because contrary to popular belief, there was actual plot progression in this season. The show isn’t just about the East vs West conflict, but also about the Forgers becoming a true family. With the cruise arc we saw Loid and Yor question their jobs and paths in life. Both realising how much they appreciate this new found family dynamic. The last episode of that arc was a nice relaxing beach day for the family. It’s grown from just a mission to a genuine sense of family.

Bond is also a part of the Forger family, so it’s only right we end the season with him saving the day. I had such a good time with this season and I’ll miss it 😢 luckily we got the movie that just dropped so I’m excited to go see that

My fave season so far.
