SPIDERBIT WEEK hosted by @smallchaoscryptid !! day six: coffee | nautical IM FINALLY BACK !! i know mer au won my poll from a while back so this is kinda a double whammy? spiderbit week AND poll fic :D
For a while, Roier wonders if he’s ever gonna see the deepsea mer ever again. When he doesn’t see him the night after their initial meeting, he’s worried that the Feds may have gotten to the mer after all, and it pains him more than he cares to admit aloud.
But it’s not the last time. In fact, it happens multiple times, to the point where they have a weird schedule of sorts to meet every third day or so.
Communicating isn’t the easiest, with only Roier able to actually talk, but they make do, and he’s getting a real good hold of asking ‘yes or no’ questions or anything else that permits him to learn more about the deepsea mer.
Except for one thing. The mer’s name.
The mer can understand nearly everything Roier says, but he can’t write it. He can only write in his own strange mer-tongue, which is a series of characters that sends the pirate into a deeper confusion the more he tries to make sense of it.
For a little while, Roier contemplates giving the merman a name himself, but that feels a little unfair to the mer. He has a name, after all.
However, his mouth running faster than his mind produces a nickname, gatinho, as a result of staring at the mer for a little too long and getting lost in his eyes. Thankfully, though, the mer doesn’t seem to mind it, and Roier even swears it makes the creature blush. But that sounds like crazy talk, so he tries not to dwell on it.
Nevertheless, the nickname stays. If only because it’s… well… the truth.
(Mostly. He’s a mer, not a cat. Scales and no legs, not fur and four legs.)
(But God, if he isn’t the prettiest being Roier has ever seen.)
A couple weeks or so after their first initial meeting, Roier is sitting on the flattest rock closest to the water, the mer half out of the water in front of him with his arms resting on the rock. A routine, of sorts. Either here, or the cave.
“So, gatinho,” the pirate starts. “I need to figure out your name. We have to find some way. Because I can’t keep calling you gatinho forever.”
(But he’d certainly like to.)
The deepsea mer tilts his head slightly and shrugs, as if to say, “I don’t see anything wrong with that.”
“What? You like the name, huh?”
A pause, followed by a slow nod. Roier grins. “No mames, wey, this guy likes being called pretty. Like a cat. Are you sure you’re not a cat? I think you’re a cat in disguise.”
The mer looks borderline offended, trying to reach over and slap him. But the pirate pushes back, out of reach, smile growing with a laugh. “You’re swatting like a cat! Holy shit, man, I was right. I’m friends with a fucking cat. A catfish. No mames.”
There’s a growl of sorts from the merman, who definitely looks like he’s blushing now - focus, focus, focus, stop looking at him like that - and shoots up out of the water before Roier has a chance to properly react.
Next thing he knows, he’s flat on his back against the rock, and there’s a solid weight on top of him, two almost-glowing blue eyes staring him down.
(A small part of Roier wonders if he should be afraid right now. He’s seen the sharp teeth and fingers. This mer could theoretically kill him in a heartbeat. Right here, right now.)
(But he’s not afraid, God only knows why. No, he’s… no, no. Enough.)
Roier tries to mask the way his cheeks are rapidly warming up with an accomplished, shit-eating laugh. “Calma, gatinho, calma.”
The deepsea mer huffs, shaking his head before a small smile crosses his face despite himself. He leans down to really shove Roier’s shoulder, but makes no effort yet to get off.
(Not that Roier minds.)
More laughter, and then a lull, and their eyes meet again. Roier becomes acutely aware of just how close they actually are. The mer is staring at him in a way he can’t quite decipher, and it makes him increasingly nervous.
(A look of wonder. Awe.)
(The mer sees the same exact look in those dark eyes.)
The pirate tries to play it off, like his heart isn’t about to beat out of his chest and like his thoughts aren’t circling around the fact that if he sits up enough, their lips could brush. Connect. “See something you like, gatinho?”
The mer also seems to finally realize their current position, and with wide eyes, pushes himself off and all but dives back into the water. Roier kicks himself in the ass for mourning the loss of contact.
For a few moments, as the merman doesn’t surface, he wonders if he’s fled for the night, and starts to feel a little guilty for his teasing.
But then there’s movement, and he watches the deepsea mer breach the surface again, blowing out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding. He rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. “Sorry, sorry. I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable or anything.”
The mer shakes his head. It’s okay.
(He did see something he liked.)
"Roier!"
The pirate's head whips around, seeing a silhouette in the far distance.
"Oh, shit-- that's Jaiden. I gotta go." He turns back to the mer. "Three days? And I will learn your name, gatinho."
The deepsea mer nods, and three things happen in succession.
One. The mer leaves him a piece of sea glass, a red one.
Two. He hesitates, then hoists himself onto the rock to press a kiss to Roier's cheek.
Three. He dives back into the water without looking back, disappearing in a fleeting glint of deep emerald and leaving Roier to touch his cheek in surprise.
"Roier!" Jaiden calls again, running over to him. "There you are! What're you doing out here?"
Roier clears his throat, willing his cheeks to cool down despite the darkness surrounding them. His best friend was eerily observant sometimes. "I was just... collecting sea glass. See? Look at this piece I found!" He picks up the piece, standing up to show her.
Jaiden looks at it before back to him, her brow quirking ever-so-slightly. "O...kay? Since when do you do that?"
"It's given me something to do recently."
She studies him another moment, trying to decipher the truth. If she doesn't believe him, she doesn't say it. Instead, she says, "fair. But I came to bring you back to the ship, c'mon."
They walk in a comfortable silence for a bit, until she speaks up again. "Y'know, I haven't seen much sea glass around here. You must have some awfully good luck; I see the little pile on the box beside your hammock."
Roier opens his hand, looking at the translucent red treasure as icy eyes infiltrate his mind, the ghost of lips warming his cheek. "Sí. Something like that."

threw some designs and what not for mer au, took me way longer than i expected (again)
Tumblr media
au is not really plot heavy, more like just some ideas in a trench coat that plague my mind every other day
i will gladly take asks about it👍 (while spiderbit is my personal main focus here because. yknow. i actually have some stuff about others as well)
all eggs are dragons in it, however some are dragon-mer's, and that fact definitely isn't relevant in any way nuh-uh no experiments here :)
richas is some sort of sea dragon (detail number one he doesn't really use his prosthetic in water because to move freely there he really only needs tail and fins, barely even arms); bobby's probably earth dragon (the mer part based on betta fish); roier's loosely based on giant squid (fun fact! while there are exceptions, mers in au usually dont wear any clothes all time. well guess who does :) for no reason at all :)); cellbit is a human. for now. (i was just lazy to draw it now, but it happens later anyway sooo)

methinks pirates au with spiderbit (and perhaps queerplatonic 4halo)😈
No... Don't do this to me... Don't tempt me for a pirate au...
Anyone that's ever had the misfortune /lh of listening to my endless ramblings about aus is very well aware that I consider a pirate au to be a STAPLE and a NEED for every single fandom.
I think I saw an uhhh. I saw a mer!Roier fanart somewhere some time ago? I don't remember by who, I'll try to find it and link it in the reblogs and I haven't stopped thinking about it since... Especially if you also throw in pirate Cellbit...
Methinks... The Brazilians should all be apart of the pirate crew :) I am flip flopping between whether they should accidentally fish Roier out of the water or whether to maybe make it so mermaids/sirens/whatever are hunted or something and they went after him for the bounty at first before Feelings™ happened.
I was a big philever enjoyer and I think he should be at least slightly obsessed with him always but then again I'm proud of Forever for deciding he's a Strong Independent Man that needs No Man and turning BBH who is... Some sorta demon I presume again. (he should have a trident I reckon it'd be cool)
But overall I'm just a sucker for QPRs (adamant believer that Jaiden and Roier are qpps) so yes I absolutely am on board with that.

the thing about mer!au is that some transformations are very very easy!
for example: meriana. she’s a loner, anyways, no pod of her own. nothing ties her to the sea. everything he loves is on the surface: roier, slime, flippa. it’s an easy answer. she drinks the tears that slime cautiously provides.
same with mer!q. he wants to forget. he BEGS wilbur for his tears for a long, long time, and wilbur denies him over and over and over. quackity just wants a new start, and after years, wilbur either provides it or q finds someone else to provide them. he can’t stand being a mermaid any longer.
spiderbit is a different story entirely.
HUMAN roier has everything tying him to the land- and also dragging him to the sea. he has his lovely platonic wife and their kid (she supports him in whatever he chooses to do.) he has his wonderful husband who has a kid of his own, who he’s essentially a step father for.
he could never DREAM of asking cellbit to transform, either. cellbit has forever, his pod, richas, his rich history. he would never ask cellbit to change.
the unfortunate truth is that they may never unite. no death goddess magic to bring them together, either.
(alt…. jaiden and bobby MAY be mermaids bc mer!jaiden is a fun concept. in that case? after weeks of preparation and careful consideration, roier swallows the scale)
i’m going to jump into a vat of lava and hope that hurts less then spiderbit in this au /lh
*falls to my knees* jaiden would be a parrotfish and bobby is her little guppy that she found abandoned and they both instantly got attached to each other btw if they’re both mermaids no i won’t change my mind (what if bobby was a baby shark tho) (roier would sing that song all the goddamn time i know he would)
going to be miserable spiderbit woudl never ask each other to transform because they both already have so much tying them to their home i’m sick i’m i’ll i’m going to jump into lava now

@atthebell's SPIDERBIT WEEK DAY FIVE: weed fic | mermaids spiderbit mermaid au's are so personal to me i'm actually obsessed with them
There's a storm above the water when Cellbit surfaces. It's wreaking havoc on the surface, tall waves pushing him up and down and rocking him back and forth, making it hard to survey his surroundings.
It worries him. It's not the first storm he's ever seen, and he knows it won't be the last, but that's not it. The familiar ship is gone from the dock, and that's what worries him.
Because it means he's out there somewhere, in the midst of this chaos.
He shouldn't care about humans, he knows that. And he doesn't! For the most part. Only one, really.
(Roier. He likes the way the name sounds. It's perfect, just like its owner.)
And he really, really cares about that one. So much so that he feels fuzzy and warm at the mere thought of him. So much so that he could spend his whole life just listening to him talk about what makes him happy. So much so that the time between their meetings makes his heart ache with longing.
(He's in love. But he'd never admit that aloud. It's not like they can be together. Not unless...
He wouldn't do that to his human. His human friend. Friend.)
To try and quell the worrying quickly brewing in his chest, he takes off away from the land, deeper into the ocean. The downpour makes it hard to see ahead, the booming of thunder makes it hard to focus, but he persists. He has a mission.
Roaring oranges and yellows in the distance create a beacon against the gray, drawing him forward. The closer he gets, he starts to hear shouting over the rainfall. The crackling of flickering flames.
There's two ships, but only one is burning. He sees people fighting. Pirates and masked figures in all white. He sees people running.
He sees him.
His beloved human is a fighter it seems, battling two of the strange figures. And he's quite the fighter, making the whole thing look admirably easy as his weapon - a cutlass, Roier said it was - disarms one of the figures, knocking its body to the floorboards.
Life has always been eerily good at changing in the blink of an eye, though. And it happens in a flash.
Lightning ignites the sky, a deafening clap of thunder following. The ship rocks a little too hard, throwing Roier off his balance as he's nearly thrown overboard.
And then the second figure, that hellish, disgusting, wretched thing, strikes. Cellbit can't see it, but he can see his human's face, the way it contorts in pain, and he knows.
And he's mortified.
(Not his human. Not Roier. Not his Roier.)
The monster draws its weapon back, and it's stained, dripping red. And like the heartless thing it must be, it and its recovered ally send him toppling overboard, into the stormy sea.
Cellbit feels like he's been shocked, shooting back under the water and zipping forward, searching.
He finds Roier, bleeding crimson into the sea from a spot that looks way too close to his heart as he sinks down, down, down, pulled deeper and deeper by the waves.
He grabs Roier, who seems momentarily stunned to see him. There's a hand on his face, then, and Cellbit trills, nearly melting into the touch, but then Roier's eyes flutter shut and he immediately remembers he's running against the clock.
They're too far from land now. Cellbit could only keep him above the surface for so long. Only one option saves him from an untimely fate.
He pulls Roier deeper, away from the chaos near the surface, and towards the seafloor. And, cradling his face in both webbed hands, kisses him, praying to a god he doesn't quite believe in that it isn't too late for his magic to run its course.
(Maybe it's selfish. But he doesn't care. If it means keeping him breathing, keeping him alive, he'd choose this a million times over.)
He feels energy. Powerful, almost overwhelming energy. Then, white envelops them.
When the white finally begins to dissipate, only then does he pull away, only just enough. Cellbit sees shimmering deep reds and blues in his peripheral, no more bleeding, too, but he focuses on Roier's face.
He sees newfound gills flare, and then Roier gasps sharply, eyes shooting open. He's off-balance, kicking a tail instead of legs, and he realizes it quickly, eyes widening. "What the fuck?!"
Cellbit steadies him, hands on his waist, and only then does Roier seem to fully notice he's there. "What did you do..?"
"It was the only way to keep you alive," Cellbit answers, and God, does finally being able to speak to him ignites something in his heart. "I didn't want you to die. I couldn't let you die."
Roier seems to have the same thought process as him, as instead of further questioning his new state first, an awed smile starts to cross his face. "You can talk to me."
"Well, you're like me now."
"Shit, man, how did you do that?"
Cellbit flushes. "I... I believe you call it a kiss?"
He goes to pull after a few moments, sheepish as Roier processes, but then Roier's arms are around his neck, and he blushes deeper. "Is that so?"
Cellbit nods slowly, and then their eyes lock. Roier moves an arm from around his neck, hand once again cupping his face with a gentleness that makes him feel weak all over. His voice is soft, and Cellbit wonders if his heart is about to beat out of his chest. "Can I return the favor?"
Cellbit's eyes widen, flickering down to Roier's lips. "You can..."
(Since when were his feelings reciprocated?)
(Since when was this possible?)
The latter hums, smiling. "Perfect."
He tilts Cellbit's face up, and they both let their eyes close, closing the gap between them.
The kiss is soft, almost tentative, but there's no trace of franticness to be found anymore. No panic, no fear, no worry.
Euphoria floods their veins, and the chaos is forgotten.
(...who was Cellbit to question this?)
There's a lot to figure out. But they'll do it. They'll make it work like they have thus far.
Together.

almost gave up on writing this bc all my progress got deleted over a couple weeks ago but i am nothing if not determined (read: a stubborn shit) so i finally came back to rewrite cross-posted to ao3 here :>
As a kid, Roier was obsessed with the sea. He loved everything about it. Including the merfolk.
Every book about mer and their lore he could get a hold of, he read. They fascinated him to no end.
It's why he's never trusted the Federation. Why he never told his abuelo about his fascination. Roier knows what they do to the mer they capture.
His abuelo is a long-time Federation officer, and he remembers overhearing many a work-related discussion at night when he was younger, or reading his classified documents when he wasn't home.
The Federation "studies" mer, asking people that if they ever see a mer, to report the sighting to an officer. And by that, they experiment. All under the guise they preach to the public of "studying" them.
(Deepsea mer get it the worst. Labelled as aggressive, human-killing monsters, the Federation has made everyone fearful of them. Roier pushes everything he's ever read about a captured deepsea mer to the far back of his mind.)
(Surely they can't be that bad, can they?)
When Roier was old enough, he took off to live a life on the sea. A pirate, if you will, because that's what the Federation calls everyone smart enough to not conform to their overbearing ways. And he's been thoroughly enjoying his life ever since.
As it stands currently, he and the rest of the crew - friends, really - have been docked for a few days now for reparation and selling purposes. He tries to ignore the fact there's a plethora of Federation officers wandering the town, with a base of operations just outside of it, and instead spends much of his time wandering up and down the beach.
It's what he's doing this late afternoon. About to walk past a cave, a slight glint in his peripherals has him glancing into the mouth of the cave and freezing in his tracks.
Roier finds himself staring at a mer, who appears to be tangled in a net. Their tail almost looks black, but under the light of the sunset, he realizes the scales are actually the deepest emerald green he's ever seen. Looking around to make sure no one - no officer - is watching him, he slips inside.
His boots in the shallow water catch the attention of the mer, whose head snaps up at the sound. Piercing blue eyes almost seem to glow in the dim light, glaring daggers at him, and Roier freezes, holding his hands up. "I just want to help! I'm not here to hurt you or something. Can I help you?"
(Can the merman even understand him?)
The silent question is answered by the snarl on the mer's face gradually dropping, followed by a hesitant nod. His eyes continue to follow Roier closely, though, who tries to mask his surprise at the fact he's just been comprehended by a mer.
Kneeling next to the mer, he's able to make out more detail. Most notably, a bunch of scars, be it a long, thin one stretching across the bridge of his nose or the sheer amount littering his arms.
(It looks like there are more on his torso, but his arm is covering the lower half. Alarmingly, Roier swears he sees red underneath, too.)
(One step at a time.)
Roier pulls out his dagger, and starts the process of carefully cutting the merman free from the net. While doing so, he notices one signature detail of the net.
It's white.
"Did the Federation try to capture you?" he asks, sparing a brief glance up at the merman's handsome face. "And you managed to escape?"
(Focus. Focus.)
The mer nods. Roier sighs. "Fucking hate those guys, man."
He perks up a bit, as if to say "you too?" and the pirate offers a small smile in turn. But it fades after a moment. "I know what they do to you guys. It's not fair."
Silence befalls them, save for the slicing of his dagger against the net. It takes a bit, but he's finally able to pull the netting off of the mer and toss it off to the side.
The mer looks some semblance of thankful, although it turns to a grimace when he goes to move his arm that's been wrapped around his stomach this whole time, and it resumes its original place.
Roier frowns. "You're hurt. Let me see."
He doesn't move his arm, though, and it takes Roier gently prying it away so he can inspect the damage. Doing so reveals some type of stab wound, but from what, he isn't quite sure. It's not life-threatening, that much he also knows, but it's certainly bad enough to warrant concern.
(And he's very concerned.)
But he quickly realizes yet another problem. Said problem being that he has no medical supplies on him. Granted, he could go back to the ship for some, but that means either running into another member of the crew or worse... someone else stumbling upon this mer.
(Is it worth the risk?)
"Okay, bad news," he speaks up again. "I don't have any supplies to help you on me, but I might be able to--"
Roier is cut off by watching the mer reach for a satchel he didn't even realize the latter had. "Oh, shit-- Do you have your own supplies?"
The merman nods, but before he can take out any of the supplies on his own, the pirate is reaching out to take the satchel. "I can help you again," he offers. "It'll be a lot easier than trying to fix yourself, you know?"
He seems surprised by the offer, but holds out the satchel after a few moments, watching him with a look Roier can't quite decipher.
(Apprehension? Fondness? Incredulousness?)
(All he knows is those bright eyes are a lot less scary than they've been made out to be.)
The patching-up process takes a little longer than the untangling, and Roier has to light up the lantern he brought with him now that the sun has set, but he finally finds himself wrapping the mer's torso, sitting back slightly on his knees to inspect his work. "I think that should do it. Just... be careful, okay?"
Another nod, and Roier takes another few moments to study him. Between the glowing eyes and the scars, the slight rips in some of his fins, thinking about his initial attitude...
"Are you a deepsea mer?" he asks after a beat.
The mer freezes, watching him closely and seeming to scan him for any signs of hostility. Roier only looks back at him, though, making no subtle movements, and he finally nods slowly.
Roier hums. "I figured. But for all the Federation talk about you guys being ugly monsters... you look like the opposite." The merman looks stunned. "You're... very pretty, you know? Handsome."
(Beautiful, even.)
It's his turn to be surprised when the mer smiles for the first time. A relatively small smile, but one nevertheless, and it's one that makes something warm start to bloom in his chest, everything feeling just a little fuzzy.
The mer then picks up his satchel again, rummaging through it until he pulls something out. He grabs one of Roier's hands, holding it up and gently placing something smooth in his palm before closing his fingers around it.
(Roier mourns the loss of the brief contact, and then immediately mentally kicks himself in the ass for the fact.)
("Please be careful, okay?" Another nod.)
With the high tide coming into the cave, the merman is able to start making his way out with relative ease, sparing a brief glance back to Roier and waving before disappearing under the water with a glint of emerald under the moonlight.
For several moments, he stands there in silence, processing. And then, he looks down at his hand, opening it.
A sizeable piece of dark green sea glass rests in his palm, and he can't help the smile that etches its way onto his face.
The pirate carefully pockets it, and, on his way back to the ship, can only hope to whatever god is listening that this isn't the end, but only something just beginning.
