It's Javert's chapter today!
This POV shift in the Brick is one of the most intriguing. Now we see everything that happened to Valjean after his initial escape from jail through Javert’s eyes. Since we won’t meet Javert again for quite a while, today I indulge myself in posting a lot about our inspector.
We discover how Javert was summoned to Paris by his patron, M. Chabouillet, to recapture Valjean. He succeeded that time, a detail we missed in previous presentations of events.
Hugo makes us think that Javert has forgotten Jean Valjean after that; he puts it so wonderfully: “the wolf of to-day causes these dogs who are always on the chase to forget the wolf of yesterday.” However, Javert’s subsequent actions and reactions suggest otherwise. He appears obsessed: “he was afraid of being deprived of his convict” (I will come back to some other peculiar phrases later). He took trouble to go all the way to Montfermeil to check an incident with the abducted child because he remembered the name of the child’s mother too well and associated it with Valjean. And he also recalled that Valjean was getting into the coach to Montfermeil. Despite knowing that Valjean is dead, Javert still goes there to check. Absolutely healthy attitude, I would say. It’s also amusing that it was the “respectable and extremely reassuring name” of Lambert (made up by Thénardier) that calmed Javert down.
However, he hasn’t forgotten about Montfermeil and the abducted girl and connection of this story to Valjean. And, of course, Paris is such a small city that a rumour about a man in a yellow coat living with a girl from Montfermeil reached Javert and piqued his interest. Seeing the face, which he almost recognized as Valjean’s, shocked him, but it was not enough to make him sure; Javert needed to hear his voice and for that reason he moved into the Gorbeau house (but still didn’t have a chance to hear Valjean’s voice).
And then the hunting begins, and Javert goes into predator mode. In this chapter, he is likened to a spider, a tiger, a cat, a dog, and a huntsman.  So much is going on: “when Jean Valjean believed himself to be the most secure Javert’s eye had been on him”—there is something very intimate in this. Javert “began the game,” he “experienced one ecstatic and infernal moment,” “enjoyed himself,” took “delight in strangling.”
Hugo provides an interesting detail about the public sphere controlling the police: "the free press embarrassed it," keeping them in check. Even though Javert always plays by the rules, he additionally should consider this oversight. Valjean and Cosette are fortunate that Javert is overly cautious.
Well, after this chapter I can say that Javert is almost effective in his law-and-order duties, organizing the hunt and pursuing a convict. If only he were chasing a dangerous criminal, not an old man with an exhausted and scared child.

individual stills of miguel Scampering on all fours and showing off his more distinct individual movement style (that he has because of his spider-man's Similar-but-still-distinctly-Weird-and-unique powers as compared to the more-graceful Others) so that i don't have 2 keep rewinding the clip(s) to see it. im REALLY excited to see him scuttling and skittering all over the place in the film just like he does in the comics-- and, like, seriously, Miguel Specifically being just. made Massive for some reason in his atsv design will never NOT be funny to me hes SO freakin Bouncy why did they Do That.

Harry Osborn seeing his best friend start to withdraw from everyone, seeing him obviously lose sleep, seeing him with more and more bruises that he’s attempting to cover up, seeing the way he’s so jittery around everyone now, seeing how he freezes whenever someone brings up Spiderman
Harry Osborn thinking “oh. my dad was right. I need to get rid of Spiderman.”

I think the portrayal of Spider-Man 2099 in Across the Spider-Verse is in-character in that aside from like Shattered Dimensions he's always been portrayed as a bit of an asshole who slips into anti-hero territory at times and generally has a "needs of the many over the needs of the few" mindset and given his specific circumstances in the movie it's not unreasonable to think he could take the actions he does. However it does kinda suck that since like 99% of moviegoers had no idea who he was before the movie came out their first impression of him is when he's in an antagonistic role and people think "antagonist" and "villain" are synonyms so now I'm gonna have to listen to people who've never read a comic saying he's a villain or isn't a real Spider-Man for the rest of time or at least until he inevitably changes his mind in the third one.
#hell you don't even need to read a comic just look up a let's play of spider-man edge of time you'll get what i mean#but yeah i saw a post that was like#''the first movie had a joke about how spider-man doesn't wear a cape and miguel has a cape they did that to show he's not spider-man''#as if he hasn't had that cape since his creation 30 fucking years ago#he's not even the only spider-man to have one. spider-man unlimited is also a thing that exists.#even the first movie had that call-back joke where they see the peter from miles's universe had a suit with a cape#these movies have a lot of little details with deeper meanings but the cape thing just isn't one of them sorry#but yeah. play edge of time or find it on youtube it's good.#shattered dimensions is also good but miguel's personality in that game is closer to peter's for some reason#so edge of time is better for getting a feel of what he's usually like#but yeah i do think spider-verse miguel was probably more straightforwardly heroic like other versions before the whole dead family thing#and i think he and the rest of the spider society are just genuinely misguided about how the whole canon event thing works#cause like george and gwen don't die in every universe peter doesn't get the symbiote in every universe#even uncle ben doesn't die in every universe#but miguel THINKS those things always happen. that's why he got the others to believe it cause he genuinely believes it himself#and i think they all take comfort in the idea that these bad things that happen to them happen for a reason#i know that's josh keaton's interpretation for why spectacular peter joined and i don't disagree with it#that's also why i disagree with people saying that miles is The Only True Spider-Man There just cause he was the first to outright reject it#look me in the fucking eye and tell me spectacular peter and insomniac peter don't understand what it means to be spider-man#or actually don't cause i'll bitch slap you into next week if you do#miguel o'hara#marvel#shut up tristan

Unpopular take ig but TSSM Harry was not in fact a terrible person? Lol? Unlike the audience he has no idea why Peter keeps neglecting him, if anything it would be strange if that didn't affect their relationship. He is also a deeply insecure 16 year old, so having a phase where he selfishly places too much value on popularity is like. Par for the course. That's shit you'd find in any high school centric story. That's shit every other person has done irl at that age. The only actually heinous thing he's done was emotionally manipulating Gwen in that one scene at the end of S2 and that was literally part of the setup for his pending villain arc so uh. Moral decline was kind of the entire point there. People are pressed but he was serving the kind of complexity that originally made the supporting cast so memorable in the comics

I think Hobie is scarily smart but also not at all books-smart. He can understand really complicated stuff (see: him literally building a dimension watch from scratch) but also his education sucked majorly and he has no idea how everything works/is called "properly".
He knows pretty well what he can do, but he also consistently underestimates just how much that is, compared to most people.

this idea that some ppl seem 2 have of miguel being an insanely jealous/possessive person is so funny 2 me because i just cannot even fathom where it came from in the slightest, lol, like... one of his Whole Things is respecting individual autonomy, y/k-? nevermind he also just. canonically doesn't fucking act that way,.,. yeah, obviously people can draw different wrong conclusions from the source material but, like, that Does Require at least skimmin' the source material... .

Heya thank you so much for your ask!
I'm guessing you're referring to the deleted scene where Gwen and Miguel talk about how Hobie quit/took time off:
Since it's a deleted scene it should be taken with a grain of salt but since nothing they say here actually contradicts anything that happens in the movie (and I find it fitting for Hobie's character to abandon the spider-society while still looking out for Gwen) then I personally headcanon that something similar at least happened prior to his introduction in the movie.
When you say he was inactive I guess you mean in the spider-society (English isn't my first language so please let me know if I misunderstand/misinterpret anything you said! I'm not trying to put words in your mouth I'm just trying to show how I understand what you're writing but please correct me if I'm wrong <3).But yeah, it would make sense that he was still somewhat part of the spider-society since he's still wearing their watch when he makes his entrance:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also did you know that Hobie is the ONLY spider-person that wears his watch upside down??? I didn't before I was getting screenshots for this post lol, here is a screenshot that better shows it compared to Gwen:)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(ALso he's NOT wearing any watch in his introduction scene:)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Just a fun fact I wanted to share)
About the portals:You make a good point here! We never see the portal Hobie appears from when he enters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"If anything, he's running in from some place else. And we never see if the portal he comes from is HQ issued, or one of his."This is really interesting, cause at one point I thought he'd just use the HQ portal, but if that's the case then why:
1. don't we see him enter?
2. Is he running like he came from somewhere else? Like you said the watches are pretty precise and put people close to where they need to be.
This made me think that maybe he used one of his own watches (since I think he'd already made some at this point). BUT if that's the case then again:
We should still see him enter right?
If he appeared nearby we should see the effect his watches have on their nearby surroundings like we see when Gwen uses hers:
Tumblr media
Maybe he just didn't want the HQ to figure out that he'd made his own watches yet, or maybe LYLA would be able to track him if he used the HQ watch so he used his own one instead and either:
Used it to end up far away from the others as he knew they'd all be able to see the effect his watches have on their surroundings and since Miguel apparently has everyone under constant surveillance he'd be able to figure out that Hobie was planning something behind the scenes. When he got there he then put on his HQ watch (which he hadn't been wearing since LYLA haven't been able to track him, according to the deleted scene at least) to cover up the fact that he made his own.
He used his own watch but it's not as precise and that would also explain why he had to run to get to the others. (Though it seems pretty precise when Gwen is using hers later)
Maybe he was already in Pav's dimension. This might explain why Pav asks if Miles knows about Hobie? But then again why does Pav greet him like he didn't know he was there (and also why didn't Hobie join Pav and the others sooner if that was the case)? In a way it would make sense for Hobie to hide in Pav's dimension if he's hiding from the spider-society and LYLA as hinted at in the deleted scene (which might not be canon though!), so maybe he hid there without Pav even knowing? And then he maybe saw/sensed what was going on with the gang fighting The Spot?
Cause yeah how did Hobie know they needed his help at Alchemax?
Tumblr media
As you said, Gwen seems happy/surprised to see Hobie. The deleted scene tells us that Hobie gave her a way to contact him, so maybe she did and she's just happy to see him and maybe suprised he arrived so soon after she reached out? (Though idk when she would have done that, but since we don't know what means Hobie gave her to contact him we also don't know what to look for, for all we know it could've been a small device that just sends some kind of signal to him?)I don't think HQ contacted him either. BUT, we actually see Jess and Gwen talk briefly for like 2 seconds when they're trying to break the barrier at Alchemax:
Tumblr media
So I guess another explanation could be that Jess could tell that Gwen was lying here and thus asked Hobie to go help her out as she knew he was looking out for Gwen?
But if Hobie was hiding from HQ then how did they contact him? But that's also only if you consider the deleted scene as canon. (though I don't think Jess contacting Hobie is the case but I'm just writing every theory I can come up with in case anyone wants to maybe look deeper into it).
For the moment I personally headcanon that Hobie either got a message from Gwen somehow or, like I theorised earlier, he was already nearby and his spider-sense alerted him to what was going on.
But I'd LOVE to hear what you or anyone else thinks <3
Once again thank you so much for your ask, I hope I answered it properly. Please let me know if there's something I missed or got wrong! And feel free to message me about Hobie (or atsv in general) I love asks like these as they make for a lot of fun speculation!
Also thank you so much if you read all of my ramblings!

I had a dream I was watching a movie and it turned out to be 14 hours because it was a movie and all it’s sequels
And in one of the movies, toward the 7 hour mark, the protagonist was a brunette who up until this point had been more of a side character in the earlier movies, and it turned out she was a scientist of some kind? (Up until this point, all the characters had been very average characters in comedy movies which made what the plot turned out to be for her so wild and unexpected)
Anyways, she witnesses a train crash and apparently the train came from the company she worked in and that was a really bad sign, so she goes and rushes back to work (also because this was a really weird dream, the train was sentient and evil and trying to crash into people, and although the tracks were above water, everyone else was floating in water that was just everywhere, so her rushing was her trying to swim quickly in water)
So she gets back to the building, no else is aware that there’s bad stuff happening and they’re all excited to be leaving the building in the morning because everyone was going on vacation, so the protagonist finds a place to sleep where she’s hidden (because again this was a weird dream so all employees sleep at the building), and in the morning she didn’t go with anyone else and just stayed behind, hidden, while everyone left
And it turned out other scientists stayed behind too, evil scientists, and one of them was Olivia Octavius from the ITSV movie, and the brunette was actually Spiderman (except technically “Spiderwoman” but you know my brain did not give a fuck and proudly called her Spiderman) and this was her origin story as well as sorta Doc Ock’s
Instead of being changed by a spider bite like other Spideys, she was closer to Doc Ock where she used a suit she had built (still looked like a spandex spidey suit) that latched onto her brain and mimicked the spidey powers
So she’s trying to stay hidden in her suit and figure out what’s going on, but Doc Ock finds her, and it turns out they were besties, and Doc Ock was actually in love with her and didn’t want her to get dragged into this, but ultimately she chose her evil scheme in the end and knew Spidey wouldn’t join her on this path so they had a dramatic “breakup” (the kind of breakup you have with your bestie when y’all are in love with each other but don’t realize you’re gay) while fighting and Spidey fakes her death, leaving behind a devastated Doc Ock who only meant to knock her out
(I also remember very clearly going “wow I can’t believe there was this other Spidey before the other ones, Miles should run into her at some point” during it)
Then I woke up because my roommate called me and I’m heart-broken that this isn’t a real character that everyone knows about and that I can’t go read fanfics where they get their happy ending together
(Also in the dream, because this was “origin” stuff, Doc Ock was clearly much younger, but still a couple years older than Spidey, and Spidey looked up to her and respected her as a more senior scientist before it came out what she’d been doing with her science, also I don’t think the company was Alchemax, I think it was some nonexistent origin company she worked at before joining Alchemax)
