It's great when family visit!

April 23

It has been a long semester and reaching Easter felt like a milestone. I was excited as Rach was coming over. The weather, however, looked like it was going to be grim. It did not prove us wrong for the first day or two.

We picked Each, Oscar and Anthony up from the airport in the evening and it was lovely to see them. The following day, it poured with rain and was cold. Fortunately, Oscar was quite happy to go bowling, eat take away pizza, have a wander round the antiques at Gibson Mill and stroll round shops looking for his 'prime' drink. It was like a treasure hunt...an unsuccessful one! All day it rained!

Trip to Oak Island and definitely better weather.

We visited Oak Island back in October and loved it. This persuaded me to book a couple of nights back there with Rach. It didn't disappoint. Our little airbnb was perfectly situated a couple of hundred yards from the beach and was very well equipped with beach gear which suited us perfectly. There were bikes, body board, chairs and even a trolley to take everything down to the beach.

We had a great day at the beach!

The following day we headed to Southport for breakfast and coffee before starting our journey home. This small, sleepy town is a quaint place with some great local shops, a seaside feel and a pleasant sea front path.

Before we knew it, we were back in Concord and preparing for their return to the UK. Our last evening was spent in the local Mexican Mi Pueblo. It was lovely to have spent time with them all and it was sad for the time to have gone so quick. However, we had a lovely last night together enjoying traditional Mexican food and Anthony trying the beers.

I believe in giving credit where it's due. There's far too much negativity in the world and when I have a good meal or a positive experience, I think it's only right to let people know about those places that are really something special. @sp_smokehouse is one such place. By far the best brisket I've ever had. Juicy, good fat content and not overbearing with smoke flavor. The pulled pork is juicy, full of flavor and has a smoky flavor with the ability to change for the better with whatever of their 7 sauces you choose. The mac and cheese is like your granny's and their hush puppies are something truly special. This place is definitely a must-visit when in Southport.
