you have been slowly converting me with all your icemav posting, and i recently rewatched top gun and i am s o l d. it has been consuming all of my thoughts! do you have any favorite fics??

omg, am I really?? welcome to the club!!

I’ve thrown myself head first into icemav recently so I can ABSOLUTELY rec some of my favorite fics I've read so far!!

When We Get Around to Talking About It by @compacflt is the pièce de résistance of icemav fiction I think, for me personally. It's masterfully written and nuanced and just so heartbreaking. the characterization feels so true to how these men would really be in real life and how they would deal with coming to terms with their feelings for each other and sexuality while being in the navy. and as if 90,424 words of beautiful prose wasn't enough of a gift, there is also a sequel/other stories called Debriefing (& Other Stories) which includes a more truncated version of the original but from mav's pov which is just 🤌🏻🤌🏻

Dreams of Impact by thecarlysutra is also very good. It involves a little supernatural flavor, which I enjoy, and revolves around how their lives could be different if they'd just made one single different choice.

come the same colors by susiecarter is a fav. It's a classic 'you got hurt and it's made me reckon with how I really feel about you, but I haven't figured out how to express that'. So basically it's amazing. this author also has a great catalogue of icemav, so it's really a jumping point to read all of her great work. A Shared Cup is another personal fav of mine from this author. it involves soul telepathic bonds. soooo good

a binary star by vannral is a really yummy piece of fanfic. the first line of the description is the perfect primer for how great the rest of the fic is: "Ice hasn’t ever given much thought to celestial things up in the sky but he knows that Maverick burns like one." like. c'monnnn

i'll ride in this life with you by sassenach082 is an ice and mav raise bradley after carol passes away fic, and it's full of sooo much lovely hurt/comfort that is so sweet it will rot your teeth. any fic with a plethora of baby bradley is going to be good for me

I saw beauty to the north by sortalively (tiisis) is a delayed injury fic set post TG:M. It has a lot of rooster and ice and mav reconciling in it which I'm a sucker for. and, if you like the exploration of rooster and mav's relationship (I'm a sucker for parental figure fics lets not unpack that) this author has some greaaaaaaaat fics on their page for that!

cloaked in the bruises of our failures by faerie_ground will rip your heart out. It takes the mission from TG:M and moves it to the 80s with our favorite class of '86 being trained to fly it, all while Mav and Ice are a few years post a messy 'break-up'. I should warn you that this one comes with a trigger warned from sexual assault from a person of authority to an employee, so if you aren't interested in that maybe skip this one. It is so beautiful though and treats the subject with the respect it deserves. slithered here from eden (just to sit outside your door) is another by this author that is very good and I am waiting patiently for an update

a higher fidelity by basedchamp is a classic slowburn with ice and mav developing their friendship before they realize their feelings for one another

no brighter diamond by qin_ling is a wonderful 'five times...' fic and it's so good. Everything by this author is fantastic so you should def check out their other stuff. as lions is about time travel. delish.

You're Gonna Be The One That Saves Me by an orphan_account is amazing. It's got mav struggling post hop 31 and Ice being there to offer emotional support and more if you know what I mean

'Til I Understand by Katastrophe (Karrington) is about Mav punching out of dark star and kind of fills in some blanks about what his loved ones went through while he was missing. Katastrophe is another author with a large catalogue to just go crazy in

PurpleArrowzandLeather has 153 tg fics on their page with a huge variety, some icemav, some flyboys of '86 (which I adore, I love fics showing their friendship). you can get lost in their page for a while haha. they also have their bookmarks public! so you can dig around in there, too

Sailor's Delight by saurora_borealis can be read as ice and mav or icemav and I think we both know which one I infer it as. Mal de Mer by them is like that, too

baby, baby, i'd get down on my knees for you by boasamishipper and simplecoffee is 'five times mav proposes and one time ice says yes' fic. It's sweet as candy

Is this arguably too long a response? yes. are all of these worth the read? also yes

Okay excuse me while I make a big mess all over this but, SO TRUE...!!! And everyone knows it, too.

Big meanie Bakugo sweating bullets on your first date, trying to hype himself up to pay. Not because he doesn't want to, he really has enough money to go around, but because he's nervous about getting any pushback from you, or getting all flustered when you pull out your card and try to fight him on the bill.

He literally nearly FAINTS when the waiter comes over at the end and you reach for your purse... slamming his money down on the table so hard that everyone in the general vicinity jumps and he goes bright red.

Thank god you only giggle, turning warm yourself as (instead of getting out a credit card) you pull out a tissue to dab sweetly at his forehead.

(He apologizes when he drops you back at home, head down and voice gruff because he doesn't want you to know he's embarrassed, or scare you off with how much he already cares... and you have to be the one to take his hands and lean in for a kiss he thinks about until the next time he sees you and you kiss him AGAIN...)

...Or, or, or when you're with friends who want to get crepes in the park, and he's immediately getting you one without REALIZING THAT MEANS you're gonna share!! Walking over with a big, strawberry banana ice cream mess he's prepared to hand off forever and going absolutely stone still when you take a bite and then ask if he wants any.

The answer is FUCK YES, of course, yes, he'd split any and everything with you, but like... that doesn't mean he knows what to do? Or where to bite so that it's not like you're kissing?? Or how to avoid people from looking and then teasing him???

And he gets so overwhelmed that he just has to stand there holding the dessert til whip cream starts dribbling all over his hands and now you're asking what's wrong and ad;lkdfnkjahdfnadfja RAWWWRRRR he's making the crepe explode and covering it up with the excuse that there was a hair on it and offering to get you another one that you try to share with him too, andandAND—

(His expression: 😐, meanwhile him on the inside: *//screaming fire flames nervous shouting dying crying hell is a place on earth*)

...AND then finally you both get through that awkward stage (though it takes, uh, MONTHS), and now, though he's fine sharing food and fighting with you over the bill, the first time you need to go away for a couple days, he's LOSING his mind (and that's a habit he never manages to kick). Whether it's two days or twenty-two days or twenty-two hundred days.

Sitting next to your suitcase bitching and whining, all mopey when he sees you pack your good underwear and he can't figure out why you'd even need those... or your travel teddy bear and he's suddenly getting so possessive over it like that means you're leaving, YOU'RE LEAVING HIM??????????????

("No, silly. I'll just be a train ride away," you say, trying to pull the little green and blue toy out of his hands to put back in your bag. "And it's only for four days, you've been through much worse."

Bakugo pouts, holding on tighter to the neck of it even though he's hardly ever acknowledged the silly thing before. You tug at it again, then suddenly find yourself being pulled back into the mattress, where Bakugo wraps you up in his arms instead of admitting to the simple fact that he's going to miss you more than he though capable.)

You've never seen him so soppy (yes that is the perfect word for it) and even he, himself, is surprised because this has never happened before AND he realize this must've been how his mother felt every time his father went off to visit his grandparents for the weekend.

YES, BAKUGO IS PATHETIC FOR YOU.

So I'm head over heels with your comics and art so much??? How do you do your character design markings gen q they're just so chefs kiss, I always struggle with colors n making stuff unique but cohesive so like seawings are recognizably seawings despite not looking 100% alike

That’s 100% something I struggle with too! I’ve found that honing in on unique features helps, even if you have to invent them yourself - like I give my SandWings their silly eyelashes and my MudWings their tusks - but there’s variation from individual to individual. Also keeping just head shape consistent really helps I think!

If ur mad like me you can make a list of the things you try to keep the same within one species (because I always forget, lol)

(And I don’t mean “I hate him(affectionately)” I mean GENUINELY hate him…)

I mean, I can theorize it's because people just tend to be harsher on hero characters that make mistakes than villain characters who do the same, but in the end it's like, I dunno, my dude. And I ain't got time to rationalize why people choose to behave in specific ways, I just don't interact with that stuff and sit in my corner where I am holding every character gently except Macaque who I'm shaking like rag doll until he gets therapy.

I'm straight up just not gonna focus on it, and for anyone who likes Wukong's characters peach (peace. I made that typo and thought it was funny so i'm leaving it) of mind I would highly recommend you do the same.

Focusing, following, and even interacting with posts and people who bash on something that's important to you is gonna stress you out and is not gonna be good for you, even if the content creator is good or if it's friend. Keep moving forward buddy, Wukong's an amazing character who is traumatized and doing his best and making countless mistakes but his intentions are good (which doesn't excuse it but he is trying, just not in quite the right way,) and I personally adore his character.

Anyway I dunno what happened in these latest episodes to have this erupt in this way but like, I don't want to talk about it or dwell on it because I don't need to. I like the characters, and I don't need to interact or look at stuff that bashes on them in a way that stresses me, good day o7

I want you to know that I have come back to this message three or four times unable to respond because I'm genuinely so touched that you would take the time to not only binge my boards and story content, but to message me with such kind words. It means more than I can articulate, so thank you so much. I'm so glad you're here!! ❤️

I've talked about this a little bit before, but honestly the best advice I can give is to (1) write what you love and (2) find the thing you enjoy the most about writing and start there. For me those go hand in hand because my favorite part of writing is developing the characters, so I start there and just expand from that point. I usually do this in a word/google doc, and it accidentally turns into an outline. As I develop my characters I will come up with scenarios, dialogue, memories, and plot points at random and jot those down in the doc. I really only ever go into the story knowing who my main character(s) is (are) and where/who/what I want them to be in the end. Everything in between are just stepping stones to get there. I hate the technical part of story-building; if I started with the traditional story-boarding and hammering at a rough draft chronologically from beginning to end I would lose momentum, get burnt out, and/or end up scrapping my story altogether due to discouragement. For me, starting with the characters kind of tricks me into creating a timeline and an outline over time. Your process might be different than someone else, it might look batshit crazy to someone else, but that's okay! Take your time, don't feel like you are on a strict timeline. Some writers write a book a year, some have 10 year gaps in their works. Do what works for you!

At the end of the day, if you love your characters and you have a theme or message (or multiple themes or messages) that mean something to you, writing will come easier. Sometimes I (and I'm sure other writers as well) can get bogged down by what we think people want to see or we worry that what we are creating isn't "enough" in some way or that it will be compared to other things or is something that has "already be done." Those fears only ever stop us from creating the art that we want to make, exactly how we want to make it. I would say that if you have a story and you have something you want to say, you should share it and be encouraged that it will mean something to someone. But hell, even if it only means something to you, that's okay too! I'd argue that creating any kind of art is a labor of love, it's giving a piece of ourselves to the world and saying "Here's a part of me, have at it." So just be sure that whatever you write, whatever you create, is something that you love. The rest will come naturally.

And, in my case, remembering to take my meds probably helps with the "focus" required of writing as well. Whatever works! 😂
