Battering gusts from the heavens forced Vestri lower, freezing his wings in chains of confusion and fear, jerking him every which way like a leaf against a hurricane. Blood and ice flooded Vestri's vision as the dragon was flung down, down, down toward a cacophonous, warring earth. Below him a battlefield churned dangerously. Human men and their cannons, pointing halberds, and champing horses toiled and turned and formed images of death. In the center of the converging men skittering like silver ants, the bones of Nordri pushed up from the cold, black ground, alongside his skull. It was still fleshed in white feather and fur, though streaked with gore and a scorched line of singed hide, and from his open throat he screamed his fury into the rending sky. Vestri’s eyes were suddenly wet with pain and anger and fear of the memory as he hurtled with dream-stilled wings toward the earth.

His brother's wailing, agonized as death, permeated all, making the ground shake and shudder and thrum with his power. Massive snowdrifts began to slash and pile around the dragon as Vestri spun. The men and horses on the ground froze abruptly into horrid statues of arcane ice, with any pooled blood whipping into gruesome fans of glittering red and silver hoarfrost with surges of magic. The last stances they would ever take. Spears and swords raised, horses reared and braying as echoing bells, a raised standard whipping in the storm and covered in tinkling ice. A tapestry of fury and fear and misunderstanding; the last stand of a dying god, and one Vestri had known since hatching.

Hi I just spent so long scrolling through your blog, it's an absolute goldmine! I love the way you approach historical hetalia and delve into how these nations feel and interact. This is exactly what got me into hetalia almost decade ago and why I'm still stuck here. The way you characterize the fam is amazing, the dysfunctional relationship betwen Alfred and Arthur, Matt stepping in, etc. I'm rambling at this point but I can't tell you how amazing this blog is and happy I am to find it.

sorry for taking some time to answer this, but genuinely, thank you so much for sending this sweet message! comments like these are exactly why i've stayed in the fandom for so long. and yes, there's so much to explore with the family in hetalia; arthur and alfred are so interesting to think about, within this 'young ambitious crown prince / shrewd and cunning old king' dynamic, conflicting against those moments where there is some longing for a simpler father-son relationship. and lmao, i owe 'Fly-from-Fornication' to a post listing examples of historic Puritan names. something about its outlandishness to modern eyes, and contrast to how older Alfred depicts himself (charming, flirtatious hollywood showman) was very fun.

the other nice thing about being in the fandom for years is that i've had the chance to meet some really cool people, and imo, the best headcanons often come through that collaboration— bouncing ideas off and researching with friends. in this case, i owe a lot of thoughts about the father/son dynamic, alfred's relationship with matt, matt's characterisation (being his father's sword and first dominion, but who also deals with being overshadowed) — and the expanded concept of Jack (AUS) and Zee/Eleanor (NZ) as Alfred's two other siblings to my friend @historia-vitae-magistras (who created many of the original character concepts for Jack and Zee, particularly the latter, whom we've retconned quite a bit from canon).

it's been three years since i first drew that old US/CAN/AUS/NZ sheet about their rship with Arthur, and i do like that i'm not even close to done exploring that history. there is the warmth, alongside the struggles, complexities, ironies and other contradictions about identity and power that arise when kinship is forged out of the saltwater, steel and conflict of empire. irl, i also ended up writing my dissertation with a focus on british imperial history in the pacific context 😂. there is always more history to layer on, especially when i join it to my headcanons of Yao, Kiku, Yong-soo and the SEAsian characters (who I'm still coming up with names for haha). it's one of my favourite areas to explore because these themes of culturally and ethnically mixed identities and familial ties across national lines are very personal to my own family's history and experiences within the british empire. and generally, i love pulling from what i've learned about history and historiography to approach these characters, so i'm very happy my approach to hetalia speaks to you.

The thing about checking out a series, a game, or something else while you're still into other things is that you may find yourself at a crossroads with your creative thought process.

Right now, I am dealing with keeping up with my A Plague Tale projects because I recently joined the Warrior Nun bandwagon (a bit too late but it's never too late to say #SaveWarriorNun). I am trying to write the next fic for my Magistra series and as of late for Dum Spiro Spero, Shad is the only one with ideas (and I feel awful for it, I'm so sorry). But the truth is, I haven't written anything APT related... because I'm writing for WN.

So what happens? I just fucking thought (and I swear I hate myself for this because I'll never be able to see it through): "how about a WN/APT crossover?" The Warrior Nuns are the Carriers and the Protectors are the Sister Warriors that were supposed to be their coaches, trainers. It's basically the same thing because Carriers and Warrior Nuns alike have the same fate and that's dying so everyone else can live. The OCS can be a more benevolent alchemy Order in a way, the Macula is the Halo perhaps? They're sentient, they have a free will on their own and no one fucking understand how they truly work lmao...

Anyway, right now I'm just gonna grab my clown makeup and get out of here because my brain is wild haywire.

anon this is so goddamn bizarre, you do realize that, right? that having long-term injuries isn't an idea, it's a medical reality? injuries healing wrong and affecting you for life is very real and very common. like... what are you talking about? idk what to tell you about the timing because I've been playing Vampyr for most of the day, a game that revolves around the field of medicine having weird interactions with non-human immortals, so that's what prompted me to focus on immortal biology.
