Hedgehog Hodgepodge: A Story of Espionage, Confusion, and an Evil Plan Gone Haywire
Chapter 18: Stealthy, Wealthy, and Wise
“Here, put these on,” Shadow said, handing Aurora a pair of safety glasses and headphones. “These are for eye and ear protection while we’re here at the range.”
After falling asleep in the crow’s nest at the pier, they were awakened by the sound of someone blasting a marine signal horn. Looking over the edge of the railing, they had seen a snarky-looking capybara sneering at them from the helm. Shadow’s hands had tightened into fists as he imagined himself pummeling the rodent to bits, but one look at Aurora reminded him of his charge.
The capybara would live to creep another day.
Now they were at Scope’s Gun Range and Shadow was placing his own pair of sporty-looking glasses on his face. The bright yellow of the lenses made his eyes appear blaze orange. He was wearing ear plugs to dampen the noise.
After checking in with the Range Safety Officer  (RSO) and listening to a lengthy list of “dos and don’ts,” he assigned them a bench inside the range. Shadow placed a soft case on top of it with a *clunk*, then proceeded to repeat the rules of the range. When he launched into explaining the rules a third time by reading from a pamphlet, Aurora had to stop him.
“Shadow, can’t you just tell me as we go? I know the rules are important, but I kind of tuned you out five minutes ago.” She smiled a sheepish grin.
Shadow gave her a frustrated look, but set aside the pamphlet and began unzipping his bag. Aurora’s small handgun had been stored there for the journey, and he took it out now, along with the magazine. He checked the chamber and loaded the magazine, placing it on the bench facing the target.
Aurora watched his every move. “Do you really know all that much about shooting?” she teased, knowing the answer already.
Shadow smirked at her. “Let the Master show you how it’s done.” Picking up the gun, Shadow got off three bullseye shots and turned his head with a smug grin to Aurora. She rolled her eyes, but a playful smile shone on her face. She loved watching Shadow do something he enjoyed. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t have a little fun with him.
“I’m going to empty the magazine, then reload for you to shoot.”
As he aimed the gun toward the target, Aurora lifted her hand and shot a light projectile in the same direction. Caught off guard, Shadow fired the gun and the bullet imbedded into the ceiling.
“What- Aurora! Why did you do that?!” he stammered, looking around for a threat that might have caused her to react that way. Aurora giggled as she pushed the button to move the target forward.
“Hmm, let’s see,” she began. “One, two, three bullet holes, but four shots fired. Well, Shadow, I guess you’re not the Master after all.”
He stood dumbfounded. If anyone else had done this, he would have obliterated them by now. But it was different with Aurora.
Shadow slowly unchambered the handgun, took out the magazine, and placed everything on the bench. He turned to give Aurora a very stern look.
Aurora thought maybe she had made a huge mistake with what she had done. The smile melted from her face and she was about to start apologizing when Shadow started laughing softly. “You’re lucky we’re the only two in here, or the RSO would have probably kicked you out!” Aurora looked at him wide-eyed. He laughed harder at the mental image.
“Now,” he said, serious again. “If I teach you how to use the gun, will you behave? It’s important that you learn to use it safely. No more pranks.”
Aurora nodded, and Shadow pulled her into position in front of the bench. After reloading the magazine and chamber, he checked the gun again and placed it in her hands.
“Always point the barrel towards the target, no matter what you’re doing,” he said, moving behind her and adjusting her posture. “Only when you’re ready to shoot should you put your finger on the trigger.” He made a few more adjustments and explained how to aim.
“You ready?” Shadow asked, stepping back.
Aurora nodded. “I think so.” Her heart was beating 90 to nothing.
“Then whenever you’re ready…”
Aurora took a deep breath and squeezed the trigger. A loud blast erupted from the barrel of the gun, and the bullet whizzed through the target, coming within inches of Shadow’s bullseye shots. She turned her head to see an amazed looked on Shadow’s face.
“Keep going,” he encouraged her.
Aurora shot six more times, emptying the magazine, and astonishing her boyfriend. He pushed the button to bring the target forward, and gaped at the paper riddled with bullet holes all around the bullseye.
Shadow looked at Aurora. “I’ve never seen anyone shoot this well the first time they’ve held a gun!” Aurora blushed. “You have a natural talent for this,” he continued.
Over the next hour, Shadow showed her how to load the gun and magazine, and she continued to practice her aim. Aurora felt confident knowing that if she ever needed it, she could use the small handgun with ease and safety.
In the lobby of the gun range stood a familiar figure, out of sight and out of mind. He watched through the window in heated displeasure as the couple interacted, so natural and easy in each other’s company. The observer was incognito, having received word from an informant about Aurora’s whereabouts at the pier. From there he had tailed them to the gun range, where he remained scrutinizing their every move.
When Shadow touched Aurora, anger flared within him and he had to look away. But he had learned something from this surveillance: Aurora was naturally good with a gun. He made a mental note to be cautious in the future. The element of surprise would be ideal.
As the surreptitious spectator turned to leave the stifling gun range lobby, he headed toward the door and nearly burst through. The cold air filled his lungs and he could breathe again. Reaching in his coat pocket, he pulled out a small device and tapped it. At once, his communicator honed in on the small gadget and began to track it. After carefully surveying the area, the individual slid the device smoothly under the frame of Shadow’s motorcycle and walked away. He approached a different vehicle from the one he had driven before. Instead of his sleek black sports car, he climbed into a small SUV. It was only the mountains from here, and he needed better traction. A rather toothy grin replaced his angered countenance as he envisioned what was to come.
After grabbing a bite to eat at a nearby deli, Shadow and Aurora set out once again for a destination unknown to her. There was a chill in the air as he turned the motorcycle northward. Up they climbed, higher and higher into the mountains.
At last, Shadow and Aurora arrived at a small cabin tucked into a type of alcove in the mountainside that shrouded it from sight. Aurora shivered violently as they dismounted from the motorcycle and made their way toward the door. Her thin jacket wasn’t nearly enough for this cold weather.
“Wha… what is this place?” she asked through chattering teeth.
“It’s an old G.U.N. hideaway,” said Shadow as he pulled an ancient-looking key from his coat pocket. “You should be safe here.”
The two of them walked into a sparsely furnished room with a fireplace, two chairs, and a coffee table to the right. To the left was a small kitchenette, as well as a hallway that led to what Aurora assumed were the bedrooms.
Shadow quickly closed the door, placed their bags on the coffee table, and moved to start a fire in the fireplace. Aurora picked up a dusty blanket and wrapped it around herself. Soon there was a welcoming fire blazing in the hearth, and she moved to sit down in front of it. As the heat melted away the chill in her bones, she began to relax.
Shadow sat back and studied her, noting the sad look on her face.
“Light,” he said softly, “are you alright?”
She managed a weak smile, as a tear slipped down her cheek.
“I am. I just miss my mom and dad, and I wish I knew exactly what was going on,” she replied.
Shadow leaned forward and gently brushed her tear away with his thumb, letting his hand linger on her face.
“I’m sure things are fine back at home. Right now your mother is probably tearfully watching some sappy romantic comedy, and your father is sitting next to her, bored out of his mind.”
Aurora laughed, picturing the two in her head.
“And you’re here with me,” he continued in a deeper, quieter tone. His eyes were fixed on hers, and his hand felt like a flame to her face.
Aurora sniffed. “That’s another thing. I feel so bad that you’re going to all this trouble and expense for me. I know you’ve got more important things to-“
Shadow moved his hand to place his finger over her lips. His expression became more serious. “Don’t ever think that you’re not worth all of this and more. I’ve got money to burn from 25 years of missions and nothing to spend it on. But money means nothing to me. This mission is everything. I’ve taken it on as my personal responsibility to ensure your safety. Aurora…,” he paused, “…you are my mission.”
Fresh tears poured down her cheeks as he pulled her into his strong embrace. He held her tight as all the fear and confusion and questions of the past twenty-four hours poured out of her in distressed droplets.
When her crying subsided, he gently placed his hand under her chin and lifted her face to his.
“Aurora, there’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you for days - weeks - now, and I never could find the right time.”
His deep crimson eyes held hers in an unrelenting gaze.
“Light… I love you.”
Aurora gasped in utter exhilaration. Pushing herself up, she stopped within inches of her lips touching his. “Shadow…” she breathed as their lips met. Shadow put one hand in her quills and the other on her lower back and pulled her to him tightly. As he brought her closer, he deepened the kiss, passion driving him like a bear to honey. He wanted her - needed her - this very moment. He began kissing her face, her jaw, and her neck, his breath coming in short, rough gusts.
Aurora cradled Shadow’s ear in her hand, caressing it with small kisses, then gently nibbling with her teeth. Shadow let out a low growl of satisfaction. His breathing felt like hot steam burning her skin.
Just as his mouth reached her collarbone, a loud, shrill alarm sounded, sending Aurora scrambling backward and Shadow jumping for his communicator. When he got the alarm stopped, he hung his head and swore under his breath.
“What was that?” Aurora asked, her eyes wide with shock.
“My communicator has been off, but has an emergency setting that allows urgent messages to come through.” Shadow took some deep breaths, trying to slow his racing heartbeat. “It’s probably your father making sure we aren’t touching.”
Aurora laughed nervously and Shadow pulled his communicator open to reveal a voice recording waiting. He tapped the triangle and was surprised to hear Tails’ voice fading in and out.
“Shadow! I hope you can hear me… something weird… if you’re there can you… Sonic…”
Then the voice recording ended.
“What do you think that was all about?” asked Aurora, anxiety creeping back into her chest at the sound of the cryptic message.
“I don’t know,” Shadow replied. “But Sonic knows how to access the emergency setting on my communicator, and I’m sure he or Amy would have called if something was wrong.”
Shadow sat in deep thought for several moments. Then, looking up at Aurora, he said, “I know you’re exhausted. Let me show you to your room.”

Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog - The Case of The Missing Hi-Tops (Screenshots & Review)
Tumblr media
Watching this episode ended up being a bit tricky, because the power went out when I got home from work today. But, thanks to my Aosth DVD collection and my laptop, I was still able to! Thank goodness for physical media.
The episode starts with Sonic and Tails being chased by this shows weird version of buzz-bombers. Looking at them again, they stand out as odd compared to a lot of the other shows badniks - most of Robotnik’s minions have a very cute design to them, but these things look more sinister and akin to something you might see in SatAm instead.
Tumblr media
Since most badniks in the show have a very cute design, the buzz bombers actually look kind of aggressive by comparison. Through some burrowing and fancy tricks, Sonic is able to take them down. He then notices in a newspaper that there is going to be a Sonic Appreciation event in town! Unfortunately for him and Tails, it's actually a cover for someone's unscrupulous plan....but our heroes won't know that for a while.
Sonic and Tails head to the event and look around in wonder, it's cute seeing them so amazed and happy at people appreciating ...well, Sonic, at-least (they should give some love for Tails too! He's a little sweetheart!) The first person the encounter is a bird fellow named Harry The Huckster, sporting a funny stereotypical "old man" voice.  He's very clearly clearly a Scam artist along the lines of Wes Weasely, but with less charm. Dude even pulls on Sonic’s nose, what a jerk! At-least Weasely doesn't beat up his suckers, er, "customers".
Tumblr media
There’s a lot going on here! Angry eye brow underwear, some random bikini lady, “pickled Sonic jelly”, and then some actual Sonic merch I probably would have loved to get as a kid. Also, it does me a giggle that the scam artist character is selling bibles. Someone on the art team must have been an atheist... Anyway, Harry persists for quite a while trying to sell stuff to Sonic, claiming to think Sonic is just a kid in a mask. Eventually he finally realises he's talking to the real Sonic, and gives Sonic a free bookmark before departing. Next to arrive - is Scratch and Grounder?! They're not here to appreciate Sonic, but to attack him. After busting up their mech, Sonic then sees a woman jumping off the roof a building!
Tumblr media
Thankfully, he is able to catch her, but quickly finds out that she is one creepy and messed up lady who makes even the worst of Amy Roses writing seem believable by comparison. She smooches on Sonic without his consent and just openly brags about stalking him. She even changed her name to “Sonette” sound more like his. Creeeepy! When Sonic finally tells her off, she vows revenge and runs away. Yeesh, what an asshole!
Tumblr media
Sonic and Tails now finally get the chance to go and check into a hotel in town, but while in the lobby they get interrupted by yet another person. His name is Hodgepodge, and he is a large and rather brutish rabbit who used to be friendly rival with Sonic, as they both enjoyed racing each-other. Sonic and Hodgepodge have a friendly race together, after which Sonic passes by Coconuts in disguise.
Tumblr media
This reminds me of one of the scenes from Sonic CD’s ending.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Sonic and Tails head to bed, we get a meanwhile scene where Robotnik is playing poker with one of his robots and shoots it in the chest when it beats him. Scratch and Grounder arrive home, telling Robotnik about the event Sonic is at, so he orders them to go and steamroll the town.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A pigeon-toed chicken?
Back at the hotel room, Sonic and Tails are sleeping peacefully when a strange hose comes in from under their door and gases the room. It seems to be some sort of knockout gas, as when Sonic comes to in the morning, he finds his sneakers are gone! Tails is excited to solve the mystery of who stole them, and Sonic is reluctant, saying he prefers action to thinking (which is odd as he's quite clever in this show), but eventually agrees to take it easy and help Tails search.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sonic quickly learns that running without his special sneakers results in burnt tootsie footsies....
Tumblr media
Tails is excited to solve the mystery! He seems to also share this “detective” trait in that “murder of Sonic the hedgehog” game. The name of that makes me uncomfortable because it reminds me of all the awful edgelords I’ve encountered in the My Little Pony fandom, but I know the game is actually quite cute and innocent from all I’ve seen and heard.
Tumblr media
The first "clue" they find is Coconuts, asleep in their closet. They interrogate him and ind out out that Coconuts was already in the hotel, hoping to ambush them in their sleep, but when he saw the sleeping gas hose appear, he decided to lay low and ended up dozing off (which means he must also be more of a cyborg like Scratch and Grounder, it seems).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like Coconut’s Robotnik watch. Pretty cool!  😄
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Figuring that Coconuts is innocent of the shoe theft, Tails then decides it must have been Hodgepodge who stole them. He's so sure of himself that he goes outside and attacks the big bunny! It's cute seeing Tails go all gangster on someone for messing with Sonic, but it turns out that Hodgepodge wasn't the culprit either. He may have been jealous of Sonic’s speed in the past, but is over it now and his feet would be too big for Sonic shoes anyway.
Tumblr media
Mobius’s toughest four year old!
Tumblr media
Sonic starts to feel discouraged and sits on the side of a fountain with Tails when he sees the creeper lady from before, Sonette. He goes to confront her, and she confesses to stealing from him, as well as breaking into their hotel room (I think it's time for a restraining order). But, it turns out that while she did steal some things, they weren't Sonic’s shoes but rather a chili dog wrapper and a bookmark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scratch and Grounder arrive with a steamroller, but Sonic makes quick work of them. After he puts them in an envelope and seemingly mails them back to Robotnik, he goes to confront Harry as he has put all the clues together and found out that Harry was indeed the culrpit. He explains to tails how he figured everything out, and it's neat to hear it all as even my own grown-up self didn't catch all the subtle clues throughout the episode. Harry confesses to the crime, and Sonic calls for a cop to arrest him  -personally, I think he should have told the cop about his creepy stalker Sonette, too...
Tumblr media
For some reason Tails’ pose and expression here makes me think of Wooly from Amanda The Adventurer... In the episodes final scene,Sonic sends a very impressive "talking Sonic t-shirt" as a gift to Robotnik. The image of Sonic on it even moves! I kept expecting it to actually be Sonic on the shirt somehow, but I guess Mobius just has really hi-tech t shirt fabric!
In the Sonic says segment, Sonette, once again being a huge creeper, sneaks into a room where she thinks Sonic is showering and tries to steal his shoes. A little "angel" and "devil" appear on each shoulder ( a trope I really do not care for), and pressure her according to their established stereotypes. She eventually chooses not to steal the shoes, and apologizes to Sonic. It's a good lesson to teach kids to steal peoples shoes, but I think the episode could have done more to also address that pretty much everything Sonette does to Sonic in this episode is horrifying and not okay! I guess that's what the well-known "That's no good!" Sonic says is for...
This episode was really fun! For a show that is usually very silly and simple, it's cool to see a rather cleverly written mystery with lots of clues for attentive viewers. Tails eagerness to solve the mystery is adorable, as is a lot of the art in this episode. My only real complaint is that I would like for Sonette's behavior to have been addressed as being as creepy as it was by, well, anyone. She gets off way too easy for all of stalking and physically assaulting of Sonic.
Til next time Sonic enjoyers, stay cool, and don't be a creeper like Sonette! Also, get a flashlight so you can see when the power goes without having tow ear down your phone battery....*rummages around her house* I swear we had a flashlight SOMEWHERE....

Okay so this has been circling around in my head for like two weeks like a fly hitting windows in a sun-room.
So I'm back on my Tails kitsune AU bullshit and I've also recently gotten into Cult of the Lamb so now they've mashed in my brain into a hodgepodged gloop.
And it's all going below the cut if you wanna read my brain worms cause it's long
***Trigger warning for like blood and cults and kidnapping and drugging. Just to give people a heads up (nothing too graphic or detailed but just in case and let me know if you think I missed anything I might need to warn people about)****
Little side note before jumping into this: do not tag as shipping, there is no shipping here it's all platonic and familial. If I see a ship tag I will block you.
Starting off it doesn't matter if Tails is actually a kitsune or not (I personally prefer that yes he is just for the post situation of the gang all being like "okay so what species is Tails actually???" )
I've just had this idea in my head where some cult somewhere is started and they worship kitsune's as godlike entities. They then catch wind of Tails in the news or rumors and their target is now locked.
So this cults leader gets the 'big brain but head actually empty' idea to kidnap Tails like any sane cult leader would.
Now these people somehow stumble ass backwards into kidnapping Tails and keeping him contained. And by keeping him contained they're basically drugging Tails just enough he's conscious but nonreactive. And they basically dress him up and drag him to their ceremonies as more of object than a kid. Tails is hating it and actually scared cause what the hell is wrong with these people let him go home.
Meanwhile Sonic and the gang are all freaking out cause "WHERE IS HE??!!!!" Cause lets be honest kidnapped by a cult was not on any of their bingo cards and at this point they don't know that's what happened, they only know Tails is gone and none of the usual suspects have him.
Rouge starts going through her contacts on the side looking for any crumb of information and gets a lead. And in typical Rouge fashion splits off on her own to look into it. She then comes across the cult and infiltrates their compound.
During her snooping though she overhears the leader of the cult and his subordinates talking about "living forever through the blood of their god's mortal form", sees a statue of a multi-tailed fox and all the red flags are immediately up for her. Internal panic button is smashed. 2 + 2 = fucked up situation.
She's already pressing the "get your asses here" button on her communicator and tears off as quickly but quietly as she can looking for Tails. When she finds him he's in a locked room just laying in bed, all dressed up in a white outfit. Which strange for her to see him just laying there since normally he'd be out and gone long time ago She sees what they've been giving him next to the bed and she's now double pissed off. (I like to think it's at least been over a week Tails has been missing, but if you wanna get really angsty make about 6 months, just as long as Sonic was locked up in Forces).
As gently but quickly as she can she bundles up Tails and carries him cause at this point he's got so much in his system he can't walk or talk, blinking is kinda his only form of communication at the moment. To which Rouge doesn't know what's worse, for Tails to have been asleep for the whole time unaware or to be awake for the whole time and know what's happening.
Tails on the other hand is just so happy to see her and scared that he starts crying. Which is just breaking Rouge's heart to witness as she starts to backtrack out of there with him, with him just silently crying nonstop in her arms.
Unfortunately only about halfway to the exit they discover Tails is gone and the place starts going into lock down with cultist swarming the halls of the place. And even though Rouge is an excellent fighter, she's in close quarters with a kid who can't walk so she's quickly overrun by cultist who tie her up and take Tails back.
The leader then using all of his one brain cell figures she's already signaled to the other's where they are and he knows it's only a matter of time before the fastest thing on the planet busts their door down looking for his little brother.
The leader announces to the group they're moving up the ceremony to now much to Rouge's horror and they drag her along too kicking and screaming cause they don't have time to drop her off in a cell or anything.
Everyone is now in this big ceremony/chapel room that has a big stone table covered in white flowers, that suspiciously is the perfect size for an 8 year old fox to lay down on. And the leader does just that laying Tails on the table.
Rouge is throwing an absolute fit and cursing everyone out cause no way in hell is she gonna let this happen, it's to the point multiple people are having to hold her down even with her tied up cause she's kicking up such a storm of rage.
Meanwhile, Tails is mentally absolutely freaking out in a panic and is terrified out of his mind, especially when the leader brings out a large ornate knife and starts chanting something.
As the leader is finishing up and reeling back his hand with the knife Sonic busts in and sees all of this. Immediately rushing to the table just as the cult leader goes for the downswing.
Sonic just barely catches the knife about an inch from Tails' chest grabbing on to the blade of it and cutting his hand which drips onto Tails.
Now Sonic finally has a moment to process all of this and what exactly is happening and for obvious reasons he is beyond pissed off. He's probably not far off from turning into dark Sonic or it's creeping around the edges of him. And just as he's about to send the cult leader to meet his maker he glances at Tails' face and that's the only reason he doesn't kill the leader right then and there. Cause Sonic thought Tails was asleep but now he notices not only is Tails somewhat awake but tears are streaming down his face.
So Sonic does the next best thing in this situation, knocks out the leader in less than a second and just pulls Tails into a hug off the table and starts just sobbing with Tails in his lap curled up on the floor. Cause the horror of what about happened and the relief Tails is okay and he found him in time hits Sonic all at once.
The rest of the cultists are still frozen cause for Sonic, Tails and the leader all that happened in less than a minute and the group is still catching their bearings of everything that just happened. Which is a good thing cause in that moment everyone else catches up and runs into this whole scene.
From their perspective though they just see Sonic sobbing over a limp Tails with blood on his chest (from Sonic's hand but they don't know that), a guy knocked out (or possibly dead??) next to them, a big stone table that suspiciously looks like an alter also next to them, Rouge who is still cursing up a storm tied up in the corner and held down by like 5 people, and a room full of people in matching robes that look like the guy up near Sonic and Tails.
The rest of the group now splits off with Amy and Knuckles running over to Sonic and Tails, Shadow going for the leader on the ground, Omega going to help Rouge, and the rest of their friends they had helping them splitting off to take care of the rest of the cultists.
From here everything gets resolved, cultists and leader locked up, Tails getting what ever drugs they were giving him out of his system and going home and everyone somewhat going back to their lives. Sonic however does not leave Tails' side for a while and hovers around him which for the first few weeks Tails appreciates cause if he's honest he doesn't want Sonic to be far from him either after everything and really doesn't want to be alone for long. Tails get constant nightmares about the situation and is snuggling with his big brother almost every night. Which is great for Sonic cause he's also getting terrible nightmares from the ordeal and feels better when he wakes up and Tails is right there.
It does get to the point though where after a bit of recovery and time healing the mental scars Tails has to convince Sonic that he can be go back to running around and exploring without Tails right next to him. It takes a lot of convincing and scheduling regular check-ins (like 5x more than they previously had) but Sonic and Tails slowly get somewhat back to their normal lives.
If you wanna get angsty though have it so Sonic is just a second too slow in saving Tails and the fallout from that. (couldn't be me though I'm a hurt/comfort girly at heart, give me the angst but everyone's okayish in the end)

Sonic is early 90s cool and Shadow is early 00s cool, they should have just kept introducing new guys for each new era of cool and have them all coexist in a big dated hodgepodge. What would the early 2010s hedgehog be like?

What’s in a Name?
You know something? In Pre-Reboot Archie, the implications behind Julian Kintobor changing his name to Ivo Robotnik takes on some very interesting dimensions when you look at the whole picture of things.
Tumblr media
One of the things that could make the Pre-Reboot Archie continuity so fascinating was that it was an unplanned hodgepodge of often conflicting personal visions of the writers, intermixed with hastily included details from the games as they came out. It created a weird, chaotic mix of things, but in a lot of ways part of the fun was trying to reconcile these disparate elements... as well as considering the way details could be re-contextualized in the long run.
Me being me, I tend to focus on ol blubber bolts, and in this case? When you step back and take in the full scope of the various details in Preboot Archie, it paints a rather fascinating picture of Julian’s mindset.
So, anyway. As You Know, Dr. Ivo Robotnik began life as Julian Kintobor, and upon conquering Mobotropolis and starting up his empire he re-christened himself “Dr. Ivo Robotnik”. Now, on its own the reason why he’d do this would seem pretty obvious- “Robotnik” better reflects who he is and what he’s about, and the second Sonic Kids special would corroborate this idea with the man himself admitting he finds Ivo Robotnik to be a more imposing name than his given one.
Tumblr media
Without directly naming certain Infamous Real Life Individuals, it has pretty good historical precedence in the real world. “Robotnik” on its own makes enough sense, but that begs the question of “Ivo”. Why THAT name?
And this is where things get interesting!
For much of the comic’s early run, details about Robotnik’s life before he became Robotnik would be extremely scarce, and things would only really be fleshed out after he died. However, issue 50 revealed an interesting little detail- Robotnik’s father was ALSO named ‘Ivo’.
Tumblr media
This would give some interesting implications behind why Julian calls himself Ivo, given that it was also his father’s name... it is also a surprisingly clever reference to the games given that Ivo was Robotnik’s given name in the games of the time and remains Eggman’s own given name (if rarely brought up).
Later, this would be retconned lightly in the “Director’s Cut” version of issue 50, in which the “Son of Ivo” because “of the House of Ivo”.
Tumblr media
This doesn’t necessarily contradict the earlier version, as often belonging to a “House” tends to simply be a fancy way of simply saying you’re a part of your father’s family... but taken in this context, it also hypothetically means that Ivo isn’t simply his father’s name, but the name of his bloodline’s founder. Its not uncommon for prominent/aristocratic families to name their children after esteemed ancestors, after all.
Eventually Robotnik would die in Endgame, while an alternate version of himself, Robo-Robotnik, would take his place and eventually upgrade to the current Eggman design of the Modern Games, to better reflect said games at the time of their debut.
Tumblr media
This sequence is one of those things that lives in my head-rent free, because its implied these things were built by the Original Robotnik, and just in general it brings up so, so many questions about the guy and his sense of self given that only one of those bodies looks better than he does while another actually looks even WORSE than how he normally does.
And those implications would become even MORE interesting once a certain game came along, a game that did something no other before had- actually exploring Eggman’s family history!
Tumblr media
The Adventure Games in general had the writers scrambling to incorporate elements from said games, and not always gracefully. And the revelations about Eggman’s family in particular would send a pretty huge monkey wrench into the works when it came to the logistic’s of Ivo’s family history in Archie.
Tumblr media
While debuting as “Professor Gerald”, his existence created even more questions regarding Robotnik’s back-up “Eggman” body that were never intended by Karl Bollers, chief among them “Why would Robotnik want to look more like his grandfather?”. In Sonic Adventure 2 Eggman would elaborate on how he admired his grandfather and scientific genius, so it might stand to reason that Julian would have felt similar growing up... this would also add a new context to him taking the surname “Robotnik”, indicating he did it purposefully to honor his grandfather. This would mean that both components of Julian’s new name were chosen from his predecessors, and that he found it perfectly acceptable to even physically resemble one of those predecessors.
Eventually Ian Flynn would come on board, and in that way of his he’d take all the odd and sometimes contradictory information about the Robotnik/Kintobor family and create a coherent whole from it.
Tumblr media
One of the bigger reveals from this was that Gerald Robotnik was, in fact, Julian’s MATERNAL grandfather and that the Robotnik name was her family name. Likewise, it would confirm that the “Ivo” in the House of Ivo was indeed the name of the bloodline’s founder, while acknowledging that the name originally belonged more recently to Robotnik’s father Ivo.
So still there is the question of “Why?”. One would think, given that Julian took his mother’s maiden name, that he did it out of similar affection and admiration the way he implicitly did for Gerald. But I’m not sure that’s really the case.
Tumblr media
While details were fleshed out, Robotnik/Eggman’s life was never given an in-depth look beyond him having a strained relationship with his older brother Colin. Otherwise, details about the relationship with the rest of his family was never elaborated upon... however, I do remember an interesting detail that Flynn revealed during a Q and A session.
Now I’m doing this by memory, but I swear that I speak true, but if I do remember right? Someone asked about Eggman’s parents, and Flynn basically said that it was likely he’d disposed of them in order to get them out of the way. Which, hey, I can see pretty easily in Archie. If that is the case though, then Julian didn’t take his father’s name out affection.
This veers into the realm of headcanon, but I like to think of it as Robotnik not taking his father’s name to honor him, but rather to honor his ANCESTOR Ivo, in essence reclaiming the name from a parent he disliked enough to kill. “Ivo Robotnik” as such comes about as a result of Julian wishing to emulate prominent members of his family he respected and admired, rather than parents he implicitly did not, and this theory is enhanced again by the “Eggman” body that is again implicitly modeled after Gerald Robotnik.
I just find it interesting given that you wouldn’t think Julian/Eggman to be the sort of guy to indulge in this kind of sentimentality... but then, for as much there is sentimentality behind the action, it also kind of speaks to the kind of contempt he might have held for his immediate family and his desire to be more like esteemed individuals of his family’s past rather than what in his view might have been a mediocre, lackluster present.
I dunno, I’m just spitballing and waxing poetic at this point. Still, taken all together? The various reveals of the comic and the way it incorporated stuff into the games paints an odd kind of depth to something that was originally a rather small, un-complicated detail when it came to Robotnik/Eggman/The Walrus.
And I find that Neat.

If you could pick a supporting character from the Sonic franchise to get a new spinoff game (in any genre), what would you pick and why?
(also just in case i don't get to catch your stream later, i hope you have a nice sunday!💖)
Mighty & Ray game that's their version of Sonic 2/3 where they are following Sonic/Tails/Knuckles and cleaning up all the robot debris to make sure nature can recover from the damage the Robotnik Robots did.
Bosses would be a hodgepodge of bosses from Sonic 2/3 smooshed/fused together because their AI was programmed to "KEEP DESTROYING" but they needed more parts to function.
I'd make it a Metroidvania style game.

Summary:
“Yes … of course … Robotnik.” King Acorn strode over to Eggman, bound on the floor, looking down pitiably. “Ivo, I’m surprised at you! I had no idea my most trusted advisor would turn on me in such a way!”
“Well, you never were an especially good judge of character …” Robotnik said.
“And changing the citizens into mechanized slaves! I mean, really Ivo! I’m surprised at you!”
“That’s right!” Sally said, folding her arms.
“After all, when I instated you as Warlord, we agreed you’d only be using the roboticizer on political dissidents!”
“That’s ri-- wait what?” Sally said.
[A comedic story about Sally Acorn, Sonic, and the gang rescuing King Acorn from the Void … and then wondering if maybe they shouldn't have done that. Takes place in an alternate continuity that's a hodgepodge of a lot of Sonic media, primarily the games and comic books.]
I had fun with this one lol

His name doesn't really have 'the' in it. But he thinks it sounds better than Felix the Rabbit, or as Sonic used to call him, "the wiggly fluffy cotton butt".
Felt like making an OC. Or I guess a semi-oc. Because Felix is actually a very loose fusion of two characters. Feels the Rabbit, the character Sonic could have ended up being.  And Johnny Lightfoot from Sonic the Comic. I think he could have shown up in SatAM, as a character concept art does exist, but I don't know which came first.
I tried to make a character that maybe could fit into the video game canon or a weird hodgepodge AU that likes to pluck ideas from other Sonic media.
In this headcanon Sonic and Felix were "orphans" with no memory of parents or guardians. They are found cold and shivering in the rain by Longclaw and given her wisdom and mystic intuition, she knows something is special about the two children and decides to look after them.
There is backstory that I haven't fully hashed out yet, when I have it'll come with more art.  But if I can play fast and loose with Sonic's timeline, Felix and Sonic know each other for at least 10 years.  With Felix going missing under mysterious circumstances by the time he was 11 and Sonic is 12. But unbeknownst to Sonic, he looses all memories of his brother, only feeling as if something is missing, which causes him to wander, pretty much setting him up for Sonic 1 and so on.
Felix has a magician theme going on but also singing and music. (I drew him a lot while listening to Michael Jackson) He carries a magic wand which can change size, meant to replace Johnny's electric staff. He can ride it like a broomstick, yep he can fly with it, not on his own. Felix is proficient at long range (it can shoot magic and stuff) and close range fighting and is very fast. How fast? Maybe not as fast as Sonic but he has enough tricks up his sleeve to not be scoffed at.
He also has a crush on Amy. Poor guy.
This design is still being worked on. As you may notice some inconsistencies. Any suggestions?
Font I used is : Sonic Movie Font

Hedgehog Hodgepodge: A Story of Espionage, Confusion, and an Evil Plan Gone Haywire
Chapter 17: Stricken
“Have you seen the news this evening?” Amy asked Sonic as he returned from a long run on the beach. She was sitting in bed with a multitude of fluffy pillows behind her back. “I’m beginning to get worried.”
It hadn’t even been a whole day since Aurora left with Shadow, and the whole village was coming apart.
Sonic sat on the edge of the bed unlacing his shoes. “You know I hate watching the news.” The main reason for that was Soar the Eagle. That bird-brained reporter was years past his prime, and needed to hang up his press badge.
“This is serious, though,” Amy chided. “People all over the village have become ill, and nobody knows why! Just this afternoon, the receptionist at the museum had to leave early.”
“What are the symptoms?” Sonic asked, becoming only mildly interested.
“Feeling drained, loss of appetite, pale appearance,” Amy read from a news crawler on the TV screen. “Some people are complaining of a strange rash.”
“Well, I feel fine,” he said, doing a turn for her benefit. “How about you?”
Amy shrugged. “I’m feeling the drained part, but I think that has more to do with the baby than this mysterious sickness that’s going around. Apparently it started a couple of weeks ago, but now it’s spread all across the village!”
Sonic stared at her in disbelief. How were they just now getting this news? “I’d better check in with Tails,” he said, pressing a few buttons on his wrist communicator. “Hey, Tails!” he said aloud into the receiver. “You doing okay?” There was some garbled noise over the tiny speaker, then the staticky voice of his best friend came through.
“Sonic! I…” *kkkrrrrrrrtttt* “…trying to reach y…” *kkkkrrrrzzzzz* “…not what…”
“Tails! You’re breaking up! Are you okay?” Sonic yelled.
“…fine!…” *kkzzzzzzrrtt* “…weird that it’s not…” *kkkkrrrttt* Then the signal went out.
“He sounded okay, didn’t he?” Sonic asked, his brows knit together in concern. “He’s fine,” he finally determined.
As he stared at his silent communicator, Amy had another idea. “Why don’t you try Knuckles and Rouge?”
“Good thinking!” Sonic pressed a few more buttons, then started calling for Knuckles. “Hey Knux! Can you hear me?” But he was greeted with nothing but silence.
After a few minutes of waiting, Amy spoke up. “Well, they did go on a cruise. Maybe they aren’t within a signal range or something.”
“Yeah…,” was all Sonic could say. He didn’t particularly have a terrible feeling concerning his friends; it just would have been nice to know something for sure. But his hands were tied - he didn’t know their exact locations, and he couldn’t risk leaving Amy alone to go track them down. He finally resolved that they must be doing fine and could take good care of themselves.
After washing up, Sonic joined Amy in the bed to watch the coverage. He had a nagging feeling that everything was connected, but couldn’t begin to determine how.
Suddenly Amy sat up, another look of concern washing over her face. “Has anyone checked on Sticks?”
Sonic yawned and stretched as he prepared to trek over to Sticks’ burrow. At least Amy had acquiesced the night before when he explained that it was too late to barge in on someone. But she was anxious for him to check on their friend, and had nearly shoved him out of the bed at daybreak.
“We really should have checked on Sticks before now,” Amy fretted as she readied herself for the day.
“You know, if she’d wear her communicator, we could have checked on her before now,” Sonic grumbled.
Amy gave Sonic a withering look before continuing. “I can’t even remember the last time we laid eyes on her! What kind of friend ignores another when the outside world is in utter chaos?!”
“It’ll be okay, Ames,” Sonic reassured her. “Sticks is a loner anyway. I can’t imagine her even getting close enough to someone to catch something.”
Amy nodded. “I guess you’re right. I’ll just feel better when you’ve had a chance to talk to her.”
Sonic knew that was his cue, so he brushed Amy’s cheek with a kiss and gently patted her tummy. Then he took off at top speed, going over the placement of Sticks’ booby traps in his mind. The absolute last thing he wanted on this journey was to become a hedgehog kabob.
Upon arrival, Sonic thought Sticks’ burrow had been deserted. Leaves had blown against the door, and weeds had grown up around the various trinkets she had collected and placed in her front yard. There were no birds chirping or insects buzzing.
This is weird, Sonic thought as he moved quickly towards the door. He just missed being impaled by a wooden pole covered in slime.
“Sticks!” he called, rapping loudly at the round wooden door. For a long time, all Sonic heard was silence. Then something fell and clattered within the burrow.
Sonic immediately spin-dashed and exploded through the door, surveying the mess within. As his eyes adjusted to the dim light, he searched the rooms of the small home. There in the kitchen lay Sticks, crumpled on the floor by the table.
Sonic wasted no time. He sped over to Sticks, scooping her up in his arms and gently placing her on the sofa. He zipped back to the kitchen to grab a rag and wet it with some cold water to lightly sponge over her forehead. After what seemed like ages, Sticks’ eyes finally fluttered open.
“Sonic?” she croaked, barely above a whisper. Her face was pale and thin, and her hair hung limply on her shoulders.
“Sticks, what happened to you?” he asked, bewildered.
Sticks lay silent for a long time, just laboring to breathe. Then she spoke in a raspy voice. “It’s the black smudge.”
“What?” Sonic asked. “You’re going to have to be more clear.” He was well-versed in Sticks’ strange ideas and conspiracy theories.
Sticks mumbled something incoherent. After taking another ragged breath, she clearly said, “Shadow,” before passing out again.
Fear crept over Sonic. Could Shadow have done something to hurt Sticks? He thought of Aurora, alone with him and with no way to contact her family. As his mind began to run wild with the memories he had of Shadow’s early attempts to destroy him and his friends, panic surged through his veins.
Sticks began to stir once again. She tried to speak, but her words dissolved into a coughing fit. Sonic ran to the kitchen for water, then helped her sit up to sip out of a mug.
“If Shadow’s done something terrible to you, I’ll-” Sonic began, but his words were cut off when Sticks shook her head. After several more body-wracking coughs, she was finally able to explain in a scratchy voice.
“Not Shadow… the black smudge… the trees…” *cough* “Shadow saw it.”
She then lifted her arm to show Sonic a bubbling black rash. It appeared as if the skin there was in a state of necrosis. He stared in horror at the breakout, then slowly lifted his hand.
“Don’t touch it!” she screeched, pulling her arm away.
“Sticks…” Sonic began, lost for words. “How long have you been like this?”
Sticks attempted to shrug her shoulders, but it took too much effort. “A month?” she responded, barely above a whisper. Her energy completely spent, Sticks lay back down and fell asleep.
Guilt ripped through Sonic as he remembered Amy’s words: “What kind of friend ignores another when the outside world is in utter chaos?!” If only she could see Sticks now.
“I’m sorry,” Sonic said with a catch in his voice. Tears began to flood his vision. “I’m going to figure out what’s going on and get you some help.”
Pushing up from the side of the couch, he took one long, last look at Sticks’ sleeping form before walking out the door. As he headed away from the burrow, his brain was awash with different scenarios, and he breathed a sigh of relief that Shadow wasn’t the miscreant he feared.
Picking his way through the wooded jungle, Sonic went over in his head what Sticks had said. How he wished he could contact Shadow to find out more! What had she even meant by “the trees”?
Suddenly he stopped. He didn’t want to, but Sonic lifted his face to look at the jungle around him. There, smeared on every tree in sight, was a black substance that looked like liquid metal. The dread that had floated just out of reach since he had found Sticks began to surface. Looking up, Sonic was able to move just before a big blob of the sticky goo dripped onto his head. With great haste, Sonic darted out of the jungle, anxious to tell Amy what he had discovered.
Bolting through the door, he ran into the house shouting for her, but there was no answer. Sonic sat heavily in a chair at the dining room table and rested his head in his hands. It was just too much to absorb all at once.
An hour later, Sonic barely heard Amy come in the front door. She approached him to give him a big hug from behind, but stopped, a curious look on her face.
“Sonic?” she asked.
“Yeah, Ames,” he answered flatly.
“What’s that black stuff on your shoulder?”

What's a game that's widely considered bad/mid that you can't help but love.
Mine's the Bionicle game that came out for the Gamecube/PS2/XBOX. It's a complete hodgepodge but damn it I love it
I somewhat recently played Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest and I think that game gets too much hate. it's pretty good if you have a way to get over the obtuse messages. and the platforming that AVGN complained about wasn't hard at all. I think that's a bit different from it being bad but.
I guess Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog are games I love despite being pretty mid

hey, I might have to ask, in the Boom Baby comics where does it take place on Sonic Boom? Did it take place after the Series itself? or the Archie Comic's version of Sonic Boom?
just saying
Hi! My stories are a hodgepodge of all the Sonic media I like so it doesn't occur in an exact place in the canon timeline, but if I had to place it on a timeline it technically would take place after the series Sonic Boom.

Not sure it has much basis in canon, but in my brain I always think of Maria as having a slight mid-atlantic-ish accent like how David Humphrey's Shadow does, or perhaps having some quirks in her pronounciations like Kirk Thornton's Shadow (for example he almost says "Sanic" instead of "Sonic" sometimes). Accent you get when you grow up in space instead of any geographical location. Perhaps even if they were funded by the United Federation maybe they had scientists and other sorts of people living there from different places so anyone born there grew up amongst a hodgepodge of accents. And the Commander has been on Earth long enough to pick up a United Federation accent but Shadow spent all of that time frozen away so his accent and speech patterns are one of the last remaining reminders of the ARK.

Today’s compilation:
The Best of Personal Records 1989 Disco / Post-Disco / Eurodisco / Electro / Boogie
Despite only existing between around '83 to '86, the New York-based dance label Personal Records possessed an uncanny ability in churning out floor-burning bangers. In just less than four years, and without the assistance of any major label, they managed to chart twenty-eight of their own releases. That's a lot, folks!
Personal was co-founded by famed disco producer Jurgen Korduletsch and record biz executive Don Oriolo. And here's a fun bit of trivia about Oriolo: he also ran the Felix the Cat brand. It was actually his dad who created Felix—as well as Casper the Friendly Ghost—and when he died, Don took over operations for Felix. So, if you've ever wondered why Felix appeared to have this sudden resurgence in the 80s and 90s, it's because the co-owner of this excellent 80s dance label was the one who was pulling the strings! Neat, huh?
Anyway, there's few things in this world that I love more than 80s club music. Just a total hodgepodge of stuff like disco, post-disco, boogie, funk, R&B, soul, hi-NRG, electro, hip hop, dance-rock, freestyle, synthpop, house, dance-pop, and new wave, all flowing carefreely through each other. Never has music really felt more like a melting pot than when it was played on a 1980s dancefloor. Purely unprecedented peak eclecticism that I don't think we're ever going to see again.
And Personal contributed to that spirit of dynamism with their own catalog, which this compilation manages to provide a retrospective of in eleven songs. Personal's stuff lit up New York clubs, but not all of it was made by New Yorkers. In fact, four of the songs on here were actually licensed from Germany, including probably the album's most popular song, George Kranz's "Din Daa Daa," a peculiar, onomatopoeia-heavy, beatboxing precursor that was featured on the soundtrack for none other than Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. And the other three German-made tracks come courtesy of a guy named Fancy, whose "Chinese Eyes" sure as shit hasn't aged well at all lyrically, but sonically, it's something of a new wave-synthpop-Eurodisco masterpiece. Kranz's song hit #1 on Billboard's dance chart, while "Chinese Eyes" peaked at #2.
Also, do you remember that 1991 dance-pop-house piece of cotton candy fluff, "Touch Me (All Night Long)" by Cathy Dennis (I actually posted about it a while back...you think you haven't heard from Dennis since that song came out, but trust me, you have.)? Did you know it's actually a cover of a 9½-minute freestyle-electro-post-disco bop by Wish & Fonda Rae? The original's far less known than Dennis' version, but it still peaked at #5 on the US dance chart and it was also featured in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2. It's co-produced by the great and recently departed Patrick Adams (he made up half of Wish), who shows up in a couple other places on this comp too, including "Let's Change It Up" by Inner Life, a studio group fronted by Jocelyn Brown that he was also a member of.
Oh, and eminent 80s producer-remixer extraordinaire Shep Pettibone is on here as well, providing his signature sound in Clair Hicks & Love Exchange's "Push Push (In the Bush)," which, come to think of it...do you think that provided some inspiration for "What What (In the Butt)"? 😂
And one last thing! She's not on here at all, but Lisa Lisa was actually also signed to Personal Records for some time. They licensed her hit debut single, "I Wonder If I Take You Home," which Korduletsch and Oriolo both had a hand in producing, to CBS Records for a European compilation called Breakdancing, and it led to her getting signed to Columbia. Just another feather for this powerful, yet ultimately fleeting 80s dance label to wear in its cap.
Highlights:
George Kranz - "Din Daa Daa" Wish featuring Fonda Rae - "Touch Me" Fancy - "Chinese Eyes" Fancy - "Come Inside" Clair Hicks & Love Exchange - "Push Push (In the Bush)" Fancy - "Check It Out" Claudja Barry - "Born to Love" Inner Life - "Let's Change It Up"
