[Guide from the Gray World]
My character Solow, the silver gray Vaeraf.
If I try describing Solow according to my intuitive perception, then I would call him "Guide". Perhaps some sort of spiritual guide, quiet and mysterious one, and not the one who loudly and confidently calls others to follow him. He usually stays hidden, surrounded by cold and mysterious aura, but at the same time, it feels like he has a lot of knowledge, understanding and tranquility. He will never make a choice for another, but will do everything in his power to help. He leads others to the light, but he will also understand those who choose to stay in darkness.
There is a lot of sadness in him, and heavy grief for those whom he could not help, for those he lost, including his loved ones. But he never shares his sadness with others, and usually appears calm, kind, listening and understanding, but at the same time – solitary, cold and closed.
Solow is the Gray Wanderer, and he seems to be forever stuck between light and darkness, understanding them both, and unable to accept or reject them. He helps others to find their answer and their choice, but he doesn’t answer and doesn’t choose himself.

Dialogue 5: “I did it! It’s ugly, but I did it!”, Scenario J: Flower Shop/Tattoo Parlor AU. Ruby/Willow
~
"I did it!" Willow jumps and bounces on her toes. Ruby's chest gets tight, watching Willow's excitement. She isn't wiling to confront it. Not now. Now when she can ruin it. Willow turns the bouquet toward Ruby. "It's ugly, but I did it!"
"You did," Ruby says. She checks the flowers. The arrangement, done by memory, is flawless. "Your mom is going to love it. Perfect birthday gift from a perfect - " Ruby cuts herself off. "Um. I mean."
"No," Willow says, and her tone is teasing enough that Ruby looks over to her. Willow has a knowing little smile on her lips. Something Ruby wants to taste. "Finish the sentence."
Ruby feels her face turn bright red. "I - I just meant, like..." She trails off.
Willow steps into Ruby's space. "You think I'm perfect?"
"Your bouquet sure isn't," Ruby quips, an anxious little giggle following.
"I think you're pretty perfect, too." She reaches out and traces the tattoo she'd done on Ruby's shoulder for practice the week before, and Ruby's pretty sure her heart is beating out of her chest. "If I kiss you, are you gonna freak out?"
Ruby shakes her head. "I'd freak out if you didn't."
Willow leans in and Ruby thinks the kills melts all the anxiety out of her. This is what they've been building toward, and every tattoo and bouquet paved the way.

Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, Leonard Nimoy guest stars in "Run, Killer, Run," episode 17 of the single season of A Man Called Shenandoah (original air date January 10, 1966).
Nimoy plays a world-weary hired killer who's engaged to bump off the main character while he's working on the docks in Galveston. He comes to like him, and even helps him in a brawl with a longshoreman, but that doesn't stop him from trying to do what he's been paid to do.
A Man Called Shenandoah is a weird, interesting little show, and I highly recommend watching if you can get your hands on it. A man wakes up in a frontier town with a head injury and a case of amnesia. Assuming the name "Shenandoah," he spends 34 half-hour episodes roaming the Old West, looking for clues to his real identity. The really interesting part is the growing suspicion that he wouldn't like the man he used to be, and might be better off in the long run by not remembering.
Other Trek connections:

Herbert F. Solow, executive in charge of production for The Original Series, and Lindsley Parsons, Jr., executive in charge of production for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, were both uncredited members of the MGM Television production team for A Man Called Shenandoah.

Sally Kellerman, who played Dr. Elizabeth Dehner in "Where No Man Has Gone Before," plays a ship owner's daughter in love with the main character.

One of examples of Gene Roddenberry's myth-making is his oft-repeated contention that the network shot down the idea of having Number One as the Enterprise's executive officer because they were uncomfortable with having a woman in such a position of authority on the show. In INSIDE STAR TREK, Herb Solow, the head of production for Desilu, who had the job of pitching the series to NBC, says the network was actually enthusiastic about the idea of the character; their objection was to Majel Barrett.
Solow recalls that he attempted (at Roddenberry's insistence) to argue that casting the unknown Barrett would "add humanity and believability to the concept." However:
NBC Program Executive Jerry Stanley starred quizzically at NBC Vice President Grant Tinker. Then Jerry grumbled, "Christ, Herb, this is madness. She's his girlfriend. I remember her hanging around Gene's office at MGM when he was doing The Lieutenant for us." [39]
Not wanting to "rock the boat" with Roddenberry, NBC reluctantly agreed to casting Barrett in "The Cage," the initial pilot. However, Solow says the network executives "resented being put into such an awkward position." (It's important to note that Roddenberry was then married to someone else; he divorced his first wife in late 1969, after marrying Barrett.) Sure enough, after screening the pilot, one of the first things NBC said in its notes on the episode was:
"In varying degrees, we're not too happy with some of the cast. We support the concept of a woman in a strong, leading role, but we have serious doubts as to Majel Barrett's abilities to 'carry' the show as its costar." [60]
The network did (foolishly) object to the character of Mister Spock and recommended his removal (although they had no issue with Nimoy), but given Barrett's performances in "The Cage" and later as Chapel and Lwaxana Troi, NBC's concerns about her acting were pretty justified. However, as Solow put it, when it came to casting, "the only performers [Roddenberry] would stand up for were actresses with whom he'd had a previous personal relationship." So, Roddenberry and Desilu dropped the character rather than recast.

To say sorry, to say thank you, to let you go...
Lash (the white one) and Solow, his uncle and the only surviving member of his family.
They were separated when Lash was very young, and met many years later, when Lash grew into someone Solow hardly expected to meet. Solow still cared for Lash and wished him all the best, but had to accept the fact that Lash went through a lot of terrible things that can not be changed, and that he chose a different path. He understands Lash and shares his pain, despite the burden of regret for not being able to make things better. It was a hard and painful decision not to try to save, but to let go.

Smiling while kissing Ruby/Willow
Begin Again
"And what I wanted to say," Ruby says, fumbling with her fingers, "is I'm sorry. I made stupid choices and hurt you, and now we're stuck next to each other on a plane, and I'm sure you don't want to be stuck here -"
"Roo," Willow says. Her voice is so gentle that Ruby has to look up at her. Those warm eyes, that beautiful face, the sweet lips that used to be Ruby's to kiss. They're looking at her like they used to. "Thank you. For apologizing."
It's different from what Ruby had been expecting when she walked on the plane to see Willow in her usual window seat. She'd had to double check three times to make sure she wasn't wrong, that she really was seated next to Ruby in first class. The tension of the turbulence, the way Willow had gripped her hand like Ruby's still where she finds comfort. It's a gift Ruby doesn't deserve but is desperate to accept. "Of course," she says.
Willow's still smiling, and Ruby knows that smile. She's scared to hope for what comes next. "So," Willow says, thumb gently rubbing Ruby's hand. "I mean. It may be too soon, or you may have changed your mind -"
"I haven't," Ruby interrupts. "I won't. I wish -" She cuts herself off, trying not to let the hope bleed out of her. "I wish I'd never left you."
Willow presses her lips together, eyes shining. "Ruby," she says, on a plane full of strangers, somewhere in the sky over the Atlantic, "do you want to come back?"
"I do," Ruby whispers. "I do."
"Thank God," Willow laughs, and she kisses her smile onto Ruby's lips. The armrest digs into Ruby's side, the air is stale and dry, there's a baby crying a few seats ever.
It's the best kiss of Ruby's life.
