BnHA Chapter 171: Knock Them Dead With Your Sound

Previously on BnHA: Deku and Mirio visited Eri in the hospital. Eri apologized for everything they went through in order to save her, particularly Mirio who lost his powers. Mirio told her it wasn’t her fault and that everyone was just glad she was safe, and they all wanted to see her smiling face. Eri tried to smile but couldn’t quite manage it. Deku racked his brain for ways to cheer her up, and struck on the idea of inviting her to the cultural festival. Aizawa said he’d need to ask the principal but that it could probably be arranged. After Mirio explained the concept, Eri agreed, saying that she wanted to get to know everyone better. We then cut to the police, who were watching a live broadcast of a convenience store robbery and trying to trace its source. The robber, a gentleman thief named -- wait for it -- Gentle, took out six heroes in the blink of an eye and then left without taking any money. He said he wanted his name to be etched into history, and as he met up with his accomplice afterwards, he pondered what his next great exploit should be.

Today on BnHA: We are properly introduced to Gentle and his social media-savvy adoring fan La Brava. Gentle specializes in “chivalrous crimes” that target corruption. However his recent videos haven’t been as popular, in part because Stain and the League of Villains have been stealing his thunder. Back at U.A., word begins to spread about class A’s band performance and dance program. Bakugou overhears some grumps complaining about how cocky 1-A is and how they’re the ones who “start all the conflict.” That evening the kids meet to hash out who will be in charge of what. Jirou needs a drummer, and it turns out Bakugou plays drums, but he’s pissed at the idea of being obligated to provide stress relief for the other departments. As he puts it, “we aren’t getting smacked down by the villains because we enjoy it.” Instead he reframes the whole thing as a battle, and vows to knock U.A. dead with his sound. I mean, whatever works I guess. Meanwhile Gentle reveals to La Brava that he’s planning a new stunt which will surpass anything Stain or the League has done: he plans to invade U.A.

(As always, all comments not marked with an ETA are my unspoiled reactions from my first readthrough of this chapter. I’ve read up through chapter 198 now, so any ETAs will reflect that.)

okay so the narrator, whom I assume is Gentle, is talking about people who have left their marks on history

you’re telling me there’s a hero out there simply known as “Brave”? I know we already had a Mr. Brave, and I can tell you right now he has left his mark on absolutely nothing. so that means there’s another guy out there named Brave, so Mr. Brave, your hero name is even lamer than I thought. WHY DIDN’T YOU JUST GO WITH SPLIT END

I want to know everything about all of these guys right the fuck now. particularly Destro. “special abilities liberation army” sounds a lot like a Magneto type “mutant rights” type of thing. there’s an era that we still don’t know much about right after quirks first started appearing on the scene, and it fascinates me and I want to know more about what it was like. because I have some fic ideas about that time period tbh. Destro, I’m definitely making a note of you

so now the narration is talking about how before the present systems were established, the lines between heroes and villains were blurred and it was an age of chaos

honestly this all sounds incredibly badass, like a superpowered wild west

and Gentle seems to agree, saying it was an age of pure freedom

this guy really feels what he’s doing, huh

the gentle, soothing, cuddly criminal. when he’s not out doing Crime, he makes ASMR roleplays in his spare time. “sleep-inducing bank robbery 🌙 (whispered/soft-spoken)”

he’s walking over to La Brava now and she says that their account got deactivated “again”, so she just finished uploading all of their videos to a new account

fucking 2010s manga though, you guys!!

and apparently that narration was from his debut video, which she was rewatching and swooning over just now

so he’s going to finish his cup of tea and then they will get on to today’s filming

that is a tall order, sir. Tomura’s most recent act was a great service to humanity. all I’m saying is, you better not hype me up like the last new villain only to let me down, because don’t even get me started on that shitshow

so La Brava is all excited and asking what the next project is, and Gent is responding with a bunch of cryptic bullshit

so I guess we’re going to find out more about the history of heroes and when they became an established thing, huh? I’m 1000% on board with this and I may actually be even more excited for this than for the upcoming class 1-A rave, negl. good job getting this manga back on track, Horikoshi!

so now we’re cutting back to U.A. and Vlad (who I almost called “Brad” again, it’s been so long) is talking to Aizawa about the cultural fest, and he’s all “so I heard class A is doing a rave huh?”

interestingly, this seems to be one of the rare occasions where Aizawa doesn’t seem to be 100% on board with their hijinks

now we’re cutting to the always adorable children of class A who are excited to plan their festival program

and some shadowy person is coming up to Bakugou and is all “did you hear?”

oh no wait they’re not talking to him, they’re talking to each other about class A right in front of him

so are these guys just assholes or is this really what the rest of the school in general really thinks? because I can see why they might not exactly have a favorable impression of them, truth be told. Bakugou’s stunts at the sports festival didn’t exactly paint them in the best light. and most likely everyone has made the connection between the kidnapping and Kamino and the student dorms. and probably it’s not much of a secret who the two kids who were caught fighting on Ground Beta after hours were, either. so yeah

but it’s still a dick move to come and do this right in front of him when he’s not bothering you or anything, so fuck you still, and I will come over there and fight you if I have to, don’t think I won’t

fuck. well anyway, while I’m here grumbling and trying to take deep, calming breaths, we’re cutting back to Heights Alliance, and Iida is taking charge of a planning session

first they need to decide on the music, so Jirou is suggesting genres

she says they really should be doing EDM if the intent is to play dance music, but on the other hand everyone seems set on playing instruments. lol it would be funny though if everyone took turns DJing

so she’s asking if anyone in class plays bass or drums, and is met with a dead silence

she says she plays guitar mainly, so her drumming is only so-so. and she says that if she has to teach a beginner how to play drums then one month is not going to be enough time

Chapter 2

Playlist: “Singing is cool Katsuki”

For the next couple of days almost every time she sees Bakugou he has earbuds in and is slightly bopping his head to whatever song he’s listening to. “You created a monster,” Aizawa says, walking up behind her. Currently the two were silently watching Bakugou train. She sips at her Red Bull noticing he had her playlist blasting, “maybe but he actually looks like he’s having fun, I’ve seen him train plenty of times and he never seems to be enjoying himself” Aizawa grumbles, “you’ve got a point, but he’s always tapping now, which makes him 10x louder than usual,” she smiles brightly “Aizawa look at him, he’s even training on beat,” she was beaming so proudly, “I just knew he would be a drummer,” “you’re becoming quite attached to him aren’t you?” “Yeah and?” She gives him a pointed look and he knows not to push her, “you have too more than any other class you’ve had” Aizawa shrugs, leaving to help one of the students.

“Katsuki!” You grin calling him in between songs, he blushes a soft pink walking over to you “have you picked 3 songs yet? We compare on Friday” his cheeks are still a slight pink, “uh yeah I chose the 3 I liked most, teenage dirtbag, savior, and dream” “no shit, wow those are my favorites too. You’ve got good taste Katsuki,” she smiles warmly at him and his heart stops “tch of course I have good taste,” she giggles and Katsuki feels a swarm of butterflies in his chest, “uh, if you’re not busy right now, will you train with me for a bit?” “Sure honey, let me just put my things down,” Katsukis face turns a bright red at the pet name, and he watches as she carefully places her Red Bull and bag to the side. Katsuki lunges toward her and she easily evades, he throws a punch and she evades. It was more of a one sided fight, every move he made she would simply evade, even when he would send a blast her way no matter the side she was always able to evade. it went on that way for the next half hour, katsuki was dripping with sweat and she looked as fresh as a daisy. They were sat together on the training mat listening to ‘Savior’, and she was happily bopping her head and sipping her Red Bull,

“Those things aren’t good for you ya know,” katsuki growled, she laughed “you think I don’t know that?”

“You’re a pro you should be taking care of your body,” “katsuki, I hope you keep that mentality. Anyways we need to talk about all that training we just did,”

“We? Tch I did most of it all you did was evade,” “exactly, but something I noticed is that you were really focused on your next move and you didn’t notice mine. When I was watching you train and you were so into the music you started training on beat, every move you made was flowing gracefully. What were you thinking of when we trained together?” He thought about it, when he trained alone it was easy to get lost in it because there was no pressure to win, “I was just thinking of how to take you down” “precisely, and because of that you completely failed to see every move I made was on beat. if you had seen that you could’ve Predicted my next move or, if you had been moving on beat you and I would’ve been in the same rhythm therefore it wouldn’t have been as one sided as it was.” Katsuki nodded, taking in all of her words, but how does rhythm work? “How am I supposed to stay in rhythm or whatever when I’m in a real fight” she jumped up clapping her hands “NOW YOU'RE ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS,” Aizawa shot her a glare and she quickly sat back down, “katsuki do you know what the difference between rhythm and tempo is?” The boy grumbled too proud to admit he had no idea, she just smiled “today after class we’ll practice tempo and rhythm!” Her excited energy radiated all around, her giddiness almost contagious. The boy smiled slightly, “okay see you after class,”

Bakugou walks into the music room to find her humming and setting up various instruments, “I thought we were training,” “we are but not the kind of training you’re used to, just yet. Here, come sit at the drums” the boy does as he’s told and sits, she places some headphones over his head carefully, “okay start drumming, any beat you want,” and he does he starts off slowly with a simple 4 count, “okay now start getting faster but make sure you keep the beat you started with,” and he does a simple beat and his tempo was gradually increasing. He gets more comfortable and his beats become steadier and his hits on the drums heavier.

She stops him and spins his chair to face her, she was beaming at him, “that was amazing! Now, what did you start with?” “A beat?” “Yes but that beat became the..” “..the rhythm?” “Yes when I told you to get faster, what was that?” He frowns deeply, so used to having all the answers, she ruffles his head with a smile, “it’s okay that you don’t know, makes teaching you all the more fun,” katsuki got a feeling in his stomach, something he had rarely felt before “so let me put it all together for you, rhythm is the beat but more specifically it’s the placement of the beats and how long each beat lasts, each note you played only lasted a second but if you would’ve hit one of the symbols then that note would’ve been longer. Got it so far?” The boy hesitates a second before nodding, processing the information you just gave him, “okay so the tempo is beats per minute-“

Katsuki looked plain confused, so she backtracks, “rhythm is how long a beat lasts, tempo is how fast you hit each note, so when I had you play the same beat at a faster rate that was changing your tempo. Tempo doesn’t change the rhythm okay?” He nods more confidently this time. “What does this have to do with training though?” “Great question, so if you had picked up on my rhythm you would’ve noticed all my moves were repeating. Had you have been in the same rhythm then you would’ve been able to keep up with my moves and then I would’ve had to fight instead of evade you. Or another option would be to see my rhythm and match it in a faster tempo which would make catching me much easier. Most people unknowingly have their own rhythm, they repeat their movements too, even those who try to catch you by surprise. Like you, you always start with a right hook though your next moves may change the right hook always sets your rhythm.” “So your saying I’m predictable?” “Yes and no. Most people are so it’s not a bad thing, it’s your style but maybe you can start picking up other styles. You do practice the same moves all the time and you start with a right hook every time, so what I’m saying is maybe you should practice new rhythms. That way you add styles and beats to your technique or you can practice your same rhythm but try different tempos. Change it up even slightly, and it’ll confuse the hell out of your opponent, especially if they already know your fighting style.”

His eyes grew wide and glimmered with a newfound understanding, that was it, the look she had been waiting for. Learning something difficult and then understanding it always led to a certain level of excitement in students, she loved that look in their eyes. He paused for a moment wondering why she was bribing up that specific detail, and then he remembered she had been there for his fight against stupid Deku. He huffed thinking about how he lost because Deku knew his fighting style so well.. She was implying ways to beat him, “why?” “You want to be #1 don't you? Takes baby steps to get there, maybe your first should be this..” they spent the rest of the day studying rhythms and then studying the way the tempo would elevate or deflate it.

Bakugou

I see Bakugou as someone who likes a lot of bass with a strong and deep rhythm. A beat that goes off like his explosions. When he's listening to music while training or working out, the beats hype him up, pushing himself to go harder.

TroyBoi - O.G.

He's not someone whose fully invested in EDM, he just likes the ones with a good bass drop and sounds good, even when beats tend to switch up into something more intense. However, there are times he might listen to something not as intense and in your ears, but it still hypes him up.

Kaminari had stumbled across him listening to trap EDM music one time and asked Bakugou if he could listen too.

→ Bakugou: *scowls and mutes his speakers* "Don't you know how to fucking knock, Dunce Face?!"

→ Kaminari: *ignores him* "Whoa...that sounded pretty good. Can I listen?"

Bakugou tried to kick him out, but Kaminari was determined and finally, Bakguou gave in reluctantly, knowing Kaminari wouldn't leave until he got what he wanted. Much to Bakugou's surprise, for once Kaminari was silent. He sat on Bakguou's bed taking in the sound, listening to the bass coming from the speakers, feeling it in his bones.

→ Kaminari: *is thinking thoughtfully after the song ends* "You know...this might sound weird but it's like I feel it deep in my body. It's the same feeling I get before I use my quirk. How it feels when I build my electricity up and release it."

Bakugou wouldn't admit he felt the same, but he understood exactly what Kaminari meant. That's why he loved this type of music so much. From that day on, Kaminari would sometimes ask Bakugou for song recommendations and even though Bakugou would 'tsk,' he'd still send them, secretly enjoying that someone understood him musically.

BONUS: I've joked about this before, but I also see him liking Nicki Minaj. I'm sorry ya'll I can't let it go. He genuinely thinks she's one badass woman. He heard ONE verse before and was taken back. Then he did research and stumbled across the Anaconda music video and sat there with a flushed face for five minutes.

Kirishima

His taste in music definitely stemmed from his phase in middle school. Nothing too hardcore but nothing mellow either. He especially liked hearing the guitars and drums that are prevalent in songs. He started out listening to Alternative Rock and the band 'All Time Low' became one of his favorites.

All Time Low - The Reckless and the Brave

When Kirishima entered UA, his taste in music changed into...well anything he thought sounded good. A pop singer just released a new song? Cool! Let him listen to it! Rap? Sounds manly! Meeting new people and hearing their suggestions while tieing them to their personalities made Kirishima open his eyes to new artists. Just some simple feel-good music.

Do you wanna come zone in the sunshine?"

KYLE - Sunshine

He found himself humming along to more upbeat songs, but there are times he'll go revisit the music from his younger days, smiling to himself while the familiar strings of guitars echo in his ears. Of course, Mina knew all about his phase in middle school often sends him fond looks when he's listening to new music. Kirishima is also most comfortable with Mina listening with him.

→ Mina: *was sprawled out on Kirishima's bedroom floor, absently flipping through a magazine while listening to the rock music come out lowly through his speakers* "Hey Kiri?"

→ Kirishima: *was leaning back in his chair and had his eyes closed, his head bopping along to the lyrics while drumming his fingers on his desk* "Mm?"

→ Mina: *smiles at the sight of Kirishima enjoying himself* "Nothing."

That made Kirishima perk his head up as he tried to get her to say what she wanted to say. Truthfully, Mina was just happy that Kirishima seemed more at ease with himself and could look back with fondness, the genre holding a special place in his heart.

Kaminari

I see Kaminari as someone who has always genuinely preferred whatever he thinks sounds good, always open to finding new artists to listen too. However, he also is the kind of guy who will randomly blurt out a song that's been used as a meme. Photograph by Nickleback? He sings it with his soul. Mad World by Gary Jules? He'll walk up to his friends and sing it to them with emotion. On his own, he calms down and might listen to something more upbeat and fun.

I see the Bakusquad being surprised by Kaminari's taste in music, considering how he's always messing around. He also is a big fan of love songs or about women in general because he thinks it'll impress the ladies. It all goes back to feel-good music though.

When he stumbled across Bakugou listening to music one day, he was impressed and secretly happy they bonded on something similar, feeling as if they had gotten closer as friends. Overall, if he discovers a new song and artist, he's excited. His Spotify playlist is very detailed and extensive. Give him music recommendations!

He also tends to like music that sounds smooth. Simple lyrics and rhythm that puts him at ease. Sero is pretty straight forward when he's chilling out, so why complicate things with music that's too intense? He wants to relax.

Whenever Kaminari hears Sero playing his music he screams: "Vibe check!" and Sero snorts. He thinks he listens to music anybody could vibe too. Anybody.

→ Bakugou: *scrunches his face up* "What kind of retro shit is that?"

→ Sero: *furrows his eyebrows* "What do you mean? It's not that far off from yours."

→ Bakugou: *small explosions come from his hands* "The fuck did you just say, Tape Face?"

Sero told him to calm down and tried to find something in his playlist that Bakugou could enjoy. He ended up playing HOME - Resonance for him.

→ Sero: *rolls his eyes* "Here. Listen to this."

→ Bakugou: *sat there with a bored expression on his face* "Is the beat going to drop or is supposed to make me feel nostalgic?"

→ Sero: *widen eyes* "Oh my god. You feel that too?"

→ Bakugou: *widens his eyes too* "What the fuck?"

They both sat quietly staring at each other having to revaluate their thoughts. Sero was impressed that Bakugou was even capable of sensing something like that from a song while Bakugou sat confused wishing the song would go harder instead of making him feel sentimental. It's a weird crossover when it comes to music with these two.

Mina

She is such a supportive fangirl. Women in the music industry doing great things? Mina is a stan. I see her falling in love with Lizzo. Her music makes Mina feel like a boss woman and confident, something she loves belting the lyrics out too. Whenever her friends are feeling down, she'll send them uplifting music so they can feel good about themselves too.

I also think women with powerful vocals have an effect on her. She can get emotional when it comes to music because she just loves artists so much! Mina saw the music video for Thank U, Next and cried at the movie references. Not only were the lyrics iconic, but the films?! She danced around her room singing into her hairbrush.

She said that phrase for weeks straight in response to EVERYTHING. It was so contagious, she managed to drag Kaminari into her antics, annoying the Bakusquad to hell. It got so bad that she accidentally said it to Aizawa during class.

→ Aizawa: *handed some papers to Aoyama to pass back*

→ Mina: *grabs the stack of papers from Aoyama* "Thank you...NEXT!" *throws the papers behind her to Tsu*

→ Kaminari: *snickering next to her*

→ Aizawa: *his eye twiches* "Mina."

→ Mina: "Sorry~"

Later they tested their quirk strength by throwing that ball again and Mina took a deep breath before winding her arm up and throwing it as hard as she can.

→ Mina: *channeled her inner Kris Jenner* "Thank you, next....BITCH!"

→ Aizawa: "MINA!"

500 meters. The Bakusquad looks absolutely fed up with her while Kaminari is stiffing his laughter.

Takami

Now Hawks is your 100% punk rock type of guy. Give him the hard guitars and the build-up and he's content. Dare I say he doesn't mind screamo? Raw emotions while expressing lyrics tend to hype him up and it makes him feel invincible. Also, if he is flying around and listening to music, he needs something he can still understand with the wind whipping past his ears.

Back to what I said about punk rock, he entered this stage and never really left. Send him in a mosh pit and watch him dance to his heart's content. He gets a thrill out of this genre of music and how it gets his blood pumping. May or may not headbang, depends on the song or how he's feeling.

BNHA Chamber Orchestra/Music AU

Because I am an Orch Dork down to my very soul, and it occurred to me that 20 kids isn’t an odd size for, say... a slightly-larger-than-average high school chamber orchestra. (More likely they’re just the highest level of orchestra and they call it Chamber even though they’re a little too big for that. It’s a high school; these things happen in high school music programs.)

Is this a no quirk AU? I mean... kind of? It’s not necessarily that there are no quirks, it’s more that quirks absolutely don’t even matter. Also, AFO might not exist, or at least Toshinori Yagi never got it, since he became an instrumentalist and inspired both Deku and Bakugou to take up the violin. I did still organize the class ideas by “hero course, gen ed, business course, support course” just for convenience of organization.

The Teachers:

Toshinori Yagi was a world-class violinist who was in a major accident a few years back. He’s still got the technique and skill, but it’s hard for him to play because his posture was so severely affected by his injuries. He can make it through a concert every now and then as soloist, but for the most part, he just teaches now.

Aizawa, Mic, Midnight, and Tensei played in a quartet together all the way through high school. Tensei was first violin, Aizawa second, Hizashi their viola and Midnight their cellist. Tensei got recruited out of high school by a really fancy orchestra and plays with them, the rest of them... teach high school kids. It’s not like it’s an uncommon story.

Aizawa is the main orchestra teacher, Hizashi still teaches English and Midnight teaches History, but Aizawa keeps foisting technique questions off on the two of them for his cellos and violas. The three of them also perform as a trio during teacher talent shows.

Harp: Jirou Kyoko. When there’s not harp part, she plays whatever needs a little extra boost. (Usually second violins, bc Hagakure and Koda are shy af on their instruments.) She’s a strings specialist.

(I put so much thought into exactly what chair of what instrument each child belonged in you have no idea guys really I agonized over this)

Other tidbits:

Bakugou has always been first chair. He comes to UA, and suddenly he’s the second chair of the second violins.

Todoroki starts out as concertmaster and stays that way for one semester before he approaches Aizawa and says he’d be much more comfortable as second chair. Aizawa is chill with that, having specifically requested playing second violin all through high school because he prefers to NOT be in the front, thank you very much, and just has him and Midoriya trade places.

Midoriya is frantic and anxious at first at being Concertmaster, but he adjusts quickly and the whole orchestra finds him a lot easier to follow than Todoroki was. Todoroki plays well because he has thousands of hours of (mostly involuntary) practice behind him. Midoriya plays from the heart in a way that Todoroki is trying to learn.

Ashido and Tokoyami were the two that Aizawa struggled most between to decide section leader for their section. Mina is more confident, but Tokoyami has better technique. In the end, Mina leads better because she’s so exuberant in her playing, where Tokoyami is more inclined toward the complicated dark passages and has a better sense of timing to turn the pages, so section leader Mina became. Tokoyami is really more than okay with this. He prefers the darkness of the conductor’s shadow.

Tsuyu and Shouji can both play both cello and bass. Because Tsu has REALLY long arms (some kind of genetic condition, whatever) they sometimes trade just to see if anyone will notice. No one but Midoriya does. No one believes him when he points them out. That or they all know and are messing with him, he can’t be quite sure. He feels like he’s going insane and doesn’t mention it after the first few times.

Midoriya is a composition, theory, and music history nerd. He’ll occasionally start rambling about chords and things in the middle of something, leaving everyone around completely baffled (including the author, who has no musical theory education, only straightup performance stuff)

He also composes in his free time. Sometime in middle school, Bakugou ruined one of his notebooks with a mostly-complete concerto written painstakingly in smudged pencil and smudged eraser marks. It’s still a little bit of a sore point for him and he sometimes begins tearing up when he tries to remember some of the little phrases and motifs he can’t quite remember what he was doing with.

Other Classes:

Class B is the jazz band. Vladking/Blood King is the band teacher. Kendo is drum major. Monoma is a trumpet.

The band expands for field shows and summer band, bringing in a hecka lot of business kids.

Support kids are the drum line. Hatsume Mei is a terror during winter.

Most of the general studies kids are in the color guard, including Shinsou, whose sense of timing is the envy of no few music students. He also plays bass but transferred to the school after auditions had already taken place and didn’t make it into the orchestra. Aizawa is considering holding new auditions at the end of the semester just to let him into the class. Especially if they can get rid of Mineta, who has an excellent sense of tune and timing and all the things important to play well, but is, unfortunately, a jackass.
