First & Last Lines
I did this a million years ago. I just got reminded of it and thought it would be fun to do again. Basically, post the first and last lines of the last 10 fics you posted. WIPs are welcome. Not going with any sort of strict rules, because that’s just not how I roll. Anyway, here goes!
1. hope for the future, teen wolf, derek hale/peter hale
First: As Derek flew back from his uncle's punch, he wondered just how he hadn't realized sooner that Peter was the alpha—that he was his alpha.
Last: He couldn't say he'd ever be be content with the past or that he was happy in the present, but for the first time in years he had hope for the future, and maybe that would be enough.
2. 3 Sentence Ficathon 2024: Teen Wolf, multiple pairings
First: Derek leans his head back so he can stare at the star-studded tree canopy overhead and thinks, not for the first time, that he will never get tired of seeing Stiles’ magic.
Last: “Easy for you and Derek to say—you were both born like this and you took away my chance to get out of this life,” Scott rages back, the arrows hitting Stiles in his soft parts just like they have every time he’s hurled them over the years since Stiles got him turned into a werewolf.
3. 3 Sentence Ficathon 2024: Chosen One, macy blake’s chosen one universe, multiple pairings
First: “I just feels it lacks a certain gravitas,” Eduard says, tugging at the hem of the denim jacket he considers so ugly he wonders if some of his mates are pulling a prank on him until he turns around and sees all eight of them staring at him in a distinctly horny fashion.
Last: “Fucking lions—you’re lucky I love you.”

First: Stiles stares at the ruins of the Hale house and reflects that he perhaps should have taken Deaton more seriously when he told him starting to practice magic would change how he saw the world.
Last: All they have to do is wait for him to come.

First: Derek bursts through the door of his little apartment in New York City, yelling for his sister.
Last: "It all started in seven days from now for you and five years ago for me."
6. telepathy, black jewels, daemon sadi/lucivar yaslana
First: She’s not trustworthy.
Last: They exited the room without opposition, knowing their point was made and would not be forgotten.
7. dusk, the witcher, emhry var emreis/geralt of rivia
First: Geralt stands on the balcony outside of Emhyr’s rooms and watches the day fade into dusk
Last: Geralt could get used to having a family.
8. Trading Up, teen wolf, derek hale/stiles stilinski
First: Stiles and his (maybe?) girlfriend are walking down Main Street after dinner, holding hands and looking in the shop windows
Last: “Damnit, I need to see if I have to do actual work. While I’m checking my email, you should try to guess why Lydia didn’t turn into a werewolf. You’ll never get it, but it will entertain you while you wait,” Stiles tells Derek, then turns his attention to his laptop.
9. candy, macy blake’s chosen one universe, victor eastaughffe/orsen riggs & gus
First: “Bear!” Gus shrieks from his seat at the table.
Last: “You may have gummy bears after dinner, Gus.”
10. drift, perilous courts by tavia lark, julien sandry/whisper
First: Julien watches Whisper in the sunlight.
Last: “We’ll make sure we win.”

Kill your Darlings
So I’ve been building a Freak Troupe for few years now...
Zey have not been really posted here, I don’t really use zis site as much as I really should, and I do plan on starting to bring ze rest of zem over…
It started as only nine, but ze numbers have been steadily increasing as more and more ideas flow and come to me…
Each freak possessing ze same rules:
1. Some kind of monster. Folklore, Cryptid, Fantasy… Ze more obscure ze better~
2. Some kind of circus/freakshow/street sideshow or main attraction…
3. Some kind of hobby… Originally I had much more restriction on zis rule in particular, but I eventually let up on zese restrictions to give myself more options…
Zis zese rulesets, it vas originally just supposed to be some art exercises to help me develop better as an artist, but after ze 3rd and 4th ones… it became somezing so so much more to me
Now zis all zat said, I have been vanting to make a character based around a Nuckelavee for a vhile now… Ze design is so fucking cool, I love how uncanny and lobsided zey are depicted as… It vas one of ze designs I vanted to make as ze original set of nine even… but it just never looked good to me… it alvays failed… and I tried so hard... viz so many iterations... and I vant to share zat story as a cautionary tale...

I do not have it on hand, but ze very first iteration vas basically half a torso on unicycle, viz sword hilt sticking out for head...
(Unknown Monster)/Unicyclist/Forger as your elements... Ze design vas not developed enough to survive ze cutting room floor vhen ozer designs simply out shown it, so zen came ze first design I have records of...
Zis is vhen Nuckelavee and daredevil became inseperable in my mind, I vas convinced zis vas paring zat HAD to vork...
But zis design in particular, ze horse felt to veak, ze rider bit to normal persay?... Scrapped.
V3 felt bit better, and honestly had I tried to vork bit more on zat horse zis is probably ze design I vould have ended up staying viz, but horses are hard... So vhat better decision to make zan to replace ze horse viz somezing I suck even more at draw?
Viz him being daredevil, having him have bike make sense to me... I really did love ze idea of ze bike being just rocket viz vheels, but cars and bikes are still a veak point for me...
I vould try to make ze bike bit more streamlined so references could help more... and I did like it... I still do... Big problem zough, ze Nuckelavee disappeared in zese iterations, it became more of a headless horseman...
If I vas villing to separate Nuckelavee from boz Daredevil and ze idea of having bomb head, zen zis design also vould have been great... but I couldn't let go of ze ear vorm of an idea...
So I tried again... came up viz sketch zat yet again I vas super happy viz... but I could not for ze life of me get ze colour to look good or to pop in good vays... So I tried to make some big changes...
I tried to take ze same idea, same pose and give it different zeme...
Again... despite loving it, it just didn't look quite right once I started to try and give it full render, so I scrapped it again and tried again...
Ze last one gave me ze idea of "Vhat if zis vas ze concept of ze Horseman of Var"? And idea created zis character... A cactus knight vielding a gun lance, whos spikes could put anyone in frenzy... Var vhere ever he vent... but it had anozer problem... Nuckelavee vas replaced viz headless horseman again... Daredevil vas replaced viz jousting... ze original idea of him being a drug addicted has been missing since he lost of bike...
Eventually I had to ifnally admit to it... ze design vasn't fucking vorking... So I took all ze elements I vanted and gave zem new homes...
My very first unicycle idea vill get ze daredevil idea... basically sticking half a mummy on one wheel and called it cast... basically a joke character...
Ze Nuckelavee vill be saved for ze Horseman of War... Attached to a train, called "Engine of War"
And ze new character I basically just created, tvisted and warped...
Weed Wacker...
Dullahan/Jousting/Pumpkin Carving...
Originally all ze cactus vas suppoed to be pumpkins, but zis is ze character zat replaced ze last iteration... Killing it... It only felt appropriate for zem to be vearing pieces from him like a trophy.
I vorked on zis character for vell over year... so many times if I had been able to disconnect some ideas from eachozer I could have been done so much sooner... but I held onto one zought for so long... it caused ze death of so many designs zat vill likely never see ze light of day again...
Alvays been open to huge changes...
No idea is so precious it is immune to execution...
Kill your darlings... it vill help you in ze long run.

Šime: my childhood? I don't know what to say, really. It was good, I grew up loved, surrounded by fun and playing games with my friends outside. I also thankfully have a younger brother and...I don't know. Most of my fondest memories are the ones spent playing outside, usually with the ball of course
Host: which neighborhood?
Šime: well we moved once so there were two addresses in Zadar, until I finished middle school. And then I went to Zagreb at 14
Host: what about you Dejan? I know you had a harder childhood, but I'd like to touch upon happy moments and not so much on bad ones
Dejan: what should I say? I don't know where to start. I mean I had a really nice childhood in Germany. My parents introduced me nicely to the real world pretty early on. I remember at that time I thought we had everything we needed but...in the background everything was burning. I think I only realize how bad the situation was when we got back to Croatia. But that's alright-it happened for a reason. And I think we can all be proud that we survive it. I am actually sad my brother didn't went through that with us. He was too small
Host: you spoiled him a bit huh?
Dejan: well no. He is 10 years younger. By the time I went to Lyon he was just starting to grow up. Maybe that's why I-because of what happened I developed quite a character. So I can proudly say we all went through that together and today that's something that doesn't have a price
Host: you went to Zagreb when you were only 14 right? Although I believe you said in one interview you really wanted to go
Šime: I wanted to go because it was a call I couldn't refuse. It was football and football is my biggest love. And it's something you just feel you need to do. And when you are that young you are just pulled by your goal, by the love for football. But when I came and when the process of growing up was suddenly sped up...only then did I realize the consequences of my decision. But at that time that was a challenge to which I would never admit defeat. So there was only victory left. And I did win that game of my life. Those kind of moments left a mark on you. As Deki said those things make you stronger and make some things later in life easier
Šime: but don't get me wrong! I am not saying it wasn't nice as well. I am talking her like it's something awful-
Host: was it too much of a change to you at first?
Šime: well no, it was great for me actually. I was supposed to go to Hajduk at that time and I went to two tournaments with them in Zagreb, we won that tournament, I won the best player award and they were demanding for me to come to Hajduk but they couldn't make a deal with Zadar and then the offer from Dinamo came and...there wasn't much thought on my part. It was really great. I was at dorm for the first 6 months. And...I don't have time now but one time when we have time I'll talk about the details and my experience with boys from both on and off the pitch. It was a time of self descovery for me so to say
Host: Deki, I have to ask you something. I have a friend that played with you in Inter and he said that you spend the whole night with them celebrating, but you only drank Cola and similar drinks. Never alcohol

Šime: yeah his mental state...I don't think there is much of a difference for him when he wakes up in the morning on a normal day or when he about to enter a pitch. But I think when you meet him you are surprised actually. He is actually quite quiet and nice and really smart, with a big heart

Šime: yes. There is no doubting for him. He will tell you everything to your face and what you think about that-that's your problem. I think that's great

1. Tell us about your current project(s) - what's it about, how's progress, what do you love most about it?
Well, my current project is the fic I'm writing for the Witcher Secret Santa gift exchange, so I can't give too many details in public. It's an Emhyr var Emreis x Geralt of Rivia story, although the "x" is debatable. For now I've dubbed it "enemies to confused old men". It's almost done, I'm currently editing it, which I'm glad for because this story fought me tooth and nail. I didn't like it and didn't want to write it until it was almost finished. It's about 12.000 words right now, might be a bit more in the end, once I've finished editing. What I love most about it, is that I decided to break a few stereotypes and do a different take (at least I hope it's different). Will my giftee enjoy it? I doubt so. But at least I'm enjoying myself now, after seriously regretting the whole thing at first.
3. What is that one scene that you've always wanted to write but can't be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need?
Hmm, I'm not sure I have such a scene. Or if I have, then it changes constantly. Right now I have the idea of aroace!Emhyr and I hope I can put it into another WIP of mine. I don't even think I would need to change much. But we'll see if I'll go through with it. I'm a bit afraid people won't like it. Which is stupid because people don't have to like my stuff as long as I am satisfied with it.
6. What character do you have the most fun writing?
Aiden (together with Lambert)! I don't write them often enough, but they're so much fun and more lighthearted than "my" Geralt and Emhyr could ever be, even though they still have a certain depth and darkness to them.
23. What's the story idea you've had in your head for the longest?
That must be the WIP I'm sitting on since I've started writing fics! It's about Emhyr enlisting Geralt's help to try and get in contact again with Ciri after a slightly-twisted Witcher-ending of TW3. They go to Kaer Morhen and things get very confusing and uncomfortable for Emhyr, especially since Ciri refuses to back down and gives him hell. I just want to see him explaining to her his side of the events and how she's coming to terms with it. She doesn't need to forgive him - actually, forgiveness and giving it or not giving it is a huge topic in the WIP - but they will come to a certain kind of agreement in the end. One which will probably allow Ciri to become Empress of Nilfgaard under her own terms.
24. Would you say your writing has changed over time?
Oh yes, it has! When I started out earlier this year, it had more fluff and sweetness. My stories now are a somehow darker, grittier and emotionally charged. I think I grew a bit tired of the "and then they developed feelings for each other, kissed and were happy ever after".

Over 270,000 people sign petition for France vs Switzerland to be replayed

Over 270,000 fans have signed a petition calling on Uefa to replay the Euro 2020 last-16 match between France and Switzerland because “the rules (of the game) were not respected” when Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved Kylian Mbappé’s decisive penalty.
Mbappé’s miss resulted in the world champions crashing out of the tournament in Bucharest after leading their eventual conquerors 3-1 at one point in the match.
But a petition was launched by a disgruntled French fan, Pierre, in the aftermath of the penalty shootout, demanding that Uefa replay the tie because Sommer’s feet were over the line as Mbappe struck the ball. Goalkeepers need to keep at least one foot on the goal-line when facing a penalty, otherwise the spot-kick can be retaken.
Neither the referee nor Var intervened on Sommer’s save but more than 270,000 people signed the petition – which has now been closed – despite several different angles showing that Sommer’s foot was on the line when Mbappé kicked the ball.
The hosts of the petition, leslignesbougent.org, wrote that “Uefa had been officially approached to gauge its position on the matter”, and that Pierre had informed the host site that he wished for the petition to be closed after the angles showing the legality of Sommer’s position came to light. “Our servers exploded,” the site added.
The original petition read: “During the penalty shootout of the France v Switzerland match, goalkeeper Sommer was not on his line ahead of Mbappé’s shot. We ask that Switzerland’s qualification is cancelled so that the match can be replayed.
“Sport must be played within the rules and that evening the rules were not respected.”

Boris Johnson says he has no plans to reduce Euro 2020 stadium crowds
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday he did not plan to order a reduction in crowds attending the remaining Euro 2020 matches due to take place at Wembley.
Crowd capacity at Wembley will be increased to more than 60,000 fans for the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 under a pilot scheme announced last week.
“Of course we’ll follow the scientific guidance and the advice if we receive any such suggestion,” Johnson said in response to a question at a news conference, alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel who said she was worried about Uefa’s decision to let more people into stadiums.
“But at the moment… the position is very clear in the UK, which is that we have certain events which we can put on in a very careful and controlled manner with testing of everybody who goes there.”

Germany’s Kroos announces retirement from international football
Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has announced his retirement from international football after his team’s exit from the European Championship, the 31-year-old said on Instagram.
The 2014 World Cup winner earned 106 caps for his country, contributing 17 goals and 19 assists.
Kroos said it was clear to him “for a long time” that he would not be available for the World Cup in Qatar next year.
He said his priority now would be to focus on his club career with Real Madrid and spending time with his family.

Emma Hayes signs new Chelsea deal
A revealed by Telegraph Sport in May, Emma Hayes, who has starred as a pundit at Euro 2020, has signed a new deal to remain as manager of Chelsea, the Women’s Super League champions have announced.
The 44-year-old has been with the club since 2012 and guided them to four WSL titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups. Hayes’ side were also Champions League runners-up last season.
She said on Chelsea’s official website: “Everyone knows what this club means to me.
“The work we’ve done together over the last nine years has been hugely rewarding, full of growth of the women’s game, accompanied with winning, which is one of the club’s key values. Having retained the WSL trophy and the League Cup in 2020-21, Chelsea fell short of adding the Champions League as they were beaten 4-0 by Barcelona in the final in Gothenburg.

Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour has joined Norwich on a season-long loan deal.
The 20-year-old impressed for Scotland in a goalless draw against England at Euro 2020 on June 18, before then having to self-isolate after returning a positive Covid-19 test.
Following his performance at Wembley it was reported that several Premier League clubs were interested in signing Gilmour on a temporary basis.
Newly-promoted Norwich have won the race for his signature and Canaries boss Daniel Farke feels Gilmour is a “perfect fit” for his Canaries team.
“We are really happy to have brought Billy in,” said Farke, who saw midfielder Emiliano Buendia leave for Aston Villa for £33million last month.
“We must say a big thank you to Chelsea and all those involved for making this deal happen. I think it helped that in the past we have shown that young players with potential are in good hands here at Norwich City.

“He will help us to achieve our targets. We still have to keep in mind that he is an unbelievably young guy and that he hasn’t played regularly on this level. We have to give him some time and space to improve and find his rhythm.”

Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad all trained on the eve of England’s Euro 2020 quarter-final against Ukraine.
The reward for Tuesday’s 2-0 last-16 win against Germany at Wembley is Saturday’s clash against Andriy Shevchenko’s side in Rome.
The Three Lions fly to Italy on Friday afternoon and the full squad trained at their St George’s Park base that morning.
Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell were among those in action, having left isolation on the day of the Germany match after coming into contact with Chelsea team-mate Billy Gilmour, who tested positive for Covid-19 after playing for Scotland against England.

De Bruyne and Hazard
Belgium boss Roberto Martinez will give Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard until the last minute to prove their fitness ahead of tonight’s Euro 2020 quarter-final clash with Italy.
Manchester City star De Bruyne suffered an ankle injury during Sunday’s 1-0 win over Portugal, during which Real Madrid’s Hazard also limped off with a muscle problem, and neither was able to train with the rest of the squad on Thursday morning.
However, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the game in Munich, Martinez said: “We all know that we are fighting against time, but we’re going to take until the last minute to make the decision.
“Every day that goes by, every time they can sleep and get three meals and get some treatment, we see an improvement, and then we’ll see [today] if they can be involved or not. Unfortunately at the moment, we cannot make a decision.
“Obviously it will be difficult for [today] – a soft tissue injury in Eden’s case, maybe is difficult for a game like tomorrow, and for Kevin, having a ligament problem maybe is a bit different.
“But it’s more a medical decision. At the moment, it’s not a football decision; [today]it will become a medical decision in the afternoon and then we’ll make a football decision after that.”

“Well, I hope you can do it again – here’s to England”, he told The Telegraph.

Swiss fan reacts to their victory over France
Topless and fully clothed, desperate and ecstatic: a Swiss football supporter has become a viral sensation after cameras zoomed in on his rollercoaster emotions watching his team beat France in the Euro 2020 tournament.
Found by Swiss media after images of him yelling and grimacing during Monday’s match went round the world, Luca Loutenbach has already amended his Twitter account to describe himself as the “Nati’s official meme since 28.06.2021.”
The Nati is the nickname for Switzerland’s national football team.
Loutenbach, 28, told Switzerland’s Blick TV that he was “just a normal fan”.
But those filming the game thought otherwise, zooming in on him several times during the play as he perfectly encapsulated Swiss fans’ ecstasy, dejection and frenzied joy – starting off wearing the Swiss red shirt and ending up topless and screaming.
The images quickly went viral, with London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeting one with the comment “man of the match”.
“A star is born,” Swiss public television RTS said.
“Thanks for all your messages, what is happening to me is unreal,” he wrote Wednesday on Twitter.
“I’m actually quite discreet, even if that wasn’t on show during the game. So this is fun for one or two days, but I hope it will ease off a bit after a while,” he told Swiss TV.
Such is his fame that Switzerland’s airline Swiss has gifted him a free ticket to Russia to see his team play Spain in the quarter finals on Friday in Saint Petersburg.
The country’s tourism agency has also contacted him via Twitter to offer a relaxing weekend away in Switzerland.

Hello and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s live coverage of the build-up to quarter-finals day, with the first two last-eight games kicking off tonight. Switzerland face Spain in St Petersburg at 5pm before Belgium take on Italy in Munich at 8pm.
England midfielder Jack Grealish said captain Harry Kane is the best player he has ever played with and tipped the Tottenham Hotspur forward to break the Premier League scoring record.
Kane drew a blank in each of England’s three group games at Euro 2020 but scored the second goal in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Germany which put them into a quarter-final clash with Ukraine in Rome on Saturday.
Grealish said Kane, or “H”, was a deadly finisher but also praised his work outside the box.
“No one here would ever doubt ‘H’,” Grealish told British media on Thursday. “He’s the best player I’ve ever played with.
“He’ll break the Premier League record and the England one but he’s not just a goalscorer. He’s unbelievable when he drops deep and finds passes and puts it through people’s legs.”
Alan Shearer is the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer with 260. Kane is seventh on the list with 166.
Grealish came off the bench to play a role in both goals in the win over Germany but the 25-year-old said he was uncertain if he would start against Ukraine, given the attacking options at coach Gareth Southgate’s disposal.
“It’s difficult. I’m always playing every minute at Villa. I have to be realistic about myself and the talent that we have, especially in my position,” he said.
“You’ve got six players that play either side of Harry that, in reality, could play for most clubs in the world — myself, Jadon (Sancho), Marcus (Rashford), Raheem (Sterling), Phil (Foden) and Bukayo (Saka),” he said.
“That’s scary how good us six are. That’s not being big-headed. That’s just the truth.”

6.3 Secrets of The Enclave
Just got done with the new flashpoint and I have some Opinions[tm]
Cut for spoilers so be warned...
Overall I enjoyed the story. However I came out of it feeling wanting. I had hoped for something meatier from this story but unfortunately it just felt like a flashpoint to nudge the progression a millimetre further. We knew that Malgus was going to do this for ages now and I had hoped that more could have been done to set up the story going forward. Still, for what it was, it was an enjoyable hour or so that I spent in the story mode.
The characters were decent. While Malgus felt like a threat across the flashpoint, I had hoped we could get to battle him at least a bit. I think his over arching sense of fear would have been better preserved if the teaser SWTOR’s twitter shared didn’t have the line “I have broken my chains” which basically said ‘yeah he succeeds it makes no difference.’ so because that is technically spoiled, I had hoped for a fight at least.
Commander Golah was a fun villain in place of Malgus. Personally, I got some Indiana Jones villain vibes from him. It would have cool to have that amped up a bit further. But as a boss he was fun for what little we saw of him. Given that there is the option to kill or spare him, I figure he isn’t coming back. SWTOR has got to take away the kill option for a while. It’s too much. Let us have some characters that exist for a while.
I felt that Aryn was good if a touch one note. She felt very similarly like she did in the Deceived novel, which is understandable but I had hoped that she would be a little matured given how long it’s been. She felt a touch too brash at times. I did however find the varying levels of trust the other Jedi had of her to be interesting. Arn sticking up for her was fantastic. You go, bud.
Speaking of Arn, there’s honestly not much to say. It was great to see him again. Yet I felt he came across as an exposition character for the most part until the end moments where he spoke up against the Nautolan Jedi (who’s name I regret not taking note of...) I also see they still haven’t fixed his companion model to have the correct lightsaber and he still has the Derelict Lightsaber model instead of his own.
I will say some of the exposition delivered by Arn was interesting. I specifically noted how he chimed in with his “Not anymore” addition after Aryn said “Jedi don’t wipe your memories if you decide to leave”. I have to admit I don’t remember this being a thing in other pieces of SW media pre-SWTOR, but if true. Damn. That’s dark. I also thought it was funny that they explained his presence and why he knew this by saying ‘Oh yeah he studied the ruins’ but it doesn’t really do anything interesting except explain why he can deliver exposition.
The ruins of The Enclave themselves... oh boy... I have such mixed emotions on this. The ruins themselves were modeled perfectly to how I remember KOTOR 1 and 2. I had a moment upon leaving the sub-level via the elevator, picking up the explosives around the open area and setting foot into the corridor. It was only upon seeing that corridor did I realize exactly where I was standing and that the open area I had just been in had been the landing pad where the Ebon Hawk sits in KOTOR 1. I had to stop for moment and just go back look around and notice all the details like the walls and doors and how it felt so familiar to how it looked back in 2004 when I first played it.
Nostalgia then became corrupted by the frustration I already went into this update feeling. Frustration that SWTOR was again keeping an aspect of the game instanced that I strongly feel should have been open for exploration. Like if they want to have a flashpoint in the enclave, fine, but why can’t there be more of Dantooine to explore? To get to go and explore those ruins at our leisure. The area is so well crafted and faithfully remodeled that it really feels like such a shame to place it where it is. It’s the same problem as Copero, Umbara, and Reborn Nathema in my opinion. I can’t see why this game update couldn’t have been bundled with the pirate incursion quests and released as planet like Ossus. Anyway that’s my complaint about that. However, Master Sal-Deron suggests placing forces at other Jedi sites... if we get Rhen Var or another world as a flashpoint only planet, I will personally fly to Texas and slap the design team.
I would also like to mention, the introduction of Master Sal-Deron and the Nautolan Jedi Archivist is very appreciated and I hope we see more of them. I don’t remember it being explicitly stated that they are Jedi Council members but I like to think that they might be. If so, I’m glad the Jedi Order is starting to see some regrowth like this. I also like having Sal-Deron’s name in my pocket now so I can use that character for some of my OC’s backstories to either introduce them or reintroduce them to The Jedi Order.
So in summary; Secrets of The Enclave, an entertaining hour of voiced dialogue with honestly minimal story and frustratingly well designed nostalgia... in short...

This basically means uploading the files and database to a public server so that it can be accessed over the internet. On simple word, the place where you put the file is from VPS server.
In this tutorial we will used the shared server from Bluehost. Shared server only means that your server will be host with others website.
Now everything is ready, the only things that matter is how to install it. Let get to it.
Getting Started
After having your own server and domain on Bluehost, you need to connect them. Your VPS Server can be accessed now your Bluehost profile, but of course, we don’t want to access our website though an IP! we want to use our domain name. So simply, we are going to map the domain name to our VPS IP, so then we access the VPS and the WordPress website through both the domain and the IP.
Configure your DNS Records
Simply open DNS management zone in your Domain Provider and edit the main A record.
Than we need to create MySQL database for the application. So Let’s Create one. Connect to your VPS server using any SSH client like putty. and Let’s start!
Just open Putty and enter the Server IP or Name, and Press Open. It will ask you to login, just enter “root” as the user, then enter your password which is sent to you by email.
Note: while typing the password, putty will now show it for security reasons, but It’s there, just type it!
What’s nice, is that we have MySQL installed already as part of the LAMP Stack, but we need to create a database and a user for out application.
Note: Every MySQL statement must end in a semi-colon (;)
To get started, log into the MySQL root (administrative) account by issuing this command:
mysql -u root -p
You will be prompted for the root password, just write or paste it and press Enter.
First, create a separate database that your PHP application will use. You can call this whatever you want, but we will be using TestDb in this guide to keep it simple. Create the database by running this command:
CREATE DATABASE TestDb DEFAULT CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci;
Next, we are going to create a separate MySQL user account that we will use exclusively to operate on our new database. Creating one-function databases and accounts is a good idea from a management and security standpoint. We will use the name DbUser in this guide. Feel free to change this if you’d like.
We are going to create this account, set a password, and grant access to the database we created. We can do this by typing the following command. Remember to choose a strong password here for your database user:
CREATE USER 'DbUser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'enter_a_custom_password_here';GRANT ALL ON TestDb.* TO 'DbUser'@'localhost';
You now have a database and user account, each made specifically for Your PHP application. We need to flush the privileges so that the current instance of MySQL knows about the recent changes we’ve made:
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Exit from it by typing :
EXIT;
Upload The Script Files To The Server.
To upload the files, you need an application called WinSCP.
It is a free tool and you can download it from here.
Connect to Your VPS Server using WinSCP, and Update the PHP Files to the server to this path: “/var/www/html”
In most cases, the files would be zipped, so we need to extract them.
Again to Putty SSH CLient and Let’s install the unzip utility using the following command:
sudo apt-get install unzip
Clear putty screen to make in clean using the following command:
clear
Change directory to /var/www/html using the following command:
cd /var/www/html
Unzip the “.zip” file using the following command:
unzip YOURFILENAME*.zip
*Note: the file name may be different in your case, so replace YOURFILENAME with your file name.
Now, Move the latest folder content to the upper directory so it can be accessed directly -> use WinSCP
Just copy all the files inside “YOURFILENAME” folder and paste them directly in html folder.
Configure Apache to Publish PHP Website
Well Done, Now your files are uploaded and placed in the html folder, we just need to configure apache so we can our Publish PHP Website and access our script using our domain name. To do so, open WinSCP again and navigate to this directory: /etc/apache2/sites-available/
Now, create a new empty file and name it “yourdomain.conf” . You can replace “Scriptname” with any name you want
Open yourdomain.conf Then copy and paste the content below into the file and save.

Replace with your own domain, in my case its “YOURDOMAINNAME”
Enable your script configuration in apache and restart the service.
Now simply, run the following commands to finish the setup:
sudo a2ensite yourdomain.conf
sudo a2enmod rewrite
sudo systemctl restart apache2.service
ALMOST DONE!
Connect to MySQL Database.
Open your web browser now and navigate to your server name.
Continue the setup by entering the database info and your admin login information. In our example, the database name is TestDb and the user is DBUser with the password set.
That simple!
Setup cronjobs.What are cronjobs?
cron is a Linux utility which schedules a command or script on your server to run automatically at a specified time and date. A cron job is the scheduled task itself. Cron jobs can be very useful to automate repetitive tasks.
For example, you can set a cron job to delete temporary files every week to conserve your disk space. Some PHP web applicaitons, may require you to set up a cron job to perform certain functions.
Setup cronjobs.
To setup cronjobs, you need to add all required jobs to the server. This depends on your script, so if you bought a script from code canyon, the script owner should provide the cronjobs.
To do this, open WinSCP and got to /etc
Open crontab file using the editor
And paste all the jobs from your script to this folder. (cronjobs are listed in the app documentation)
Make sure each job is on a line and an empty line in the end.
Secure with a Free SSL.
SSL certificates are used within web servers to encrypt the traffic between the server and client, providing extra security for users accessing your application. Let’s Encrypt provides an easy way to obtain and install trusted certificates for free.
Connect to your Server using Putty SSH client. and Let’s Start!
Install the Let’s Encrypt Client
Let’s Encrypt certificates are fetched via client software running on your server. The official client is called Certbot.
First, add the repository to install Certbot:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:certbot/certbot
You’ll need to press ENTER to accept.
Then, Update the package list to pick up the new repository’s package information:
sudo apt-get update
Install Certbot’s Apache package:
sudo apt install python-certbot-apache
Certbot is now ready to be used.
Set Up the SSL Certificate
Generating the SSL certificate for Apache using Certbot is quite straightforward. The client will automatically obtain and install a new SSL certificate that is valid for the domains provided as parameters.
Simply run the following command: (change the domain)
sudo certbot --apache -d YOUR_DOMAIN_NAME
You will be asked to provide an email address for lost key recovery and notices, and you will be able to choose between enabling both http and https access or forcing all requests to redirect to https. It is usually safest to require https, unless you have a specific need for unencrypted http traffic.
That’s it!
Test your website now and it should be SSL encrypted.

English Commentary on a Chinese LuaSTG Tutorial Pt 2
This part is about combining the Repeat node with Variables

tl;dr Stuff about 60FPS (this was covered in the last post) and using the Repeat node with Variables
Context: I believe we need a bit of context before diving into this video. This tutorial seems to use an older version of LuaSTG lacking newer QoL features. The first part of the tutorial is notably focused on creating a group of bullets using the Single Bullet node.
The actual concept they put into practice is sound (i.e. using the Repeat node in conjunction with Variables) and it's still a useful video but please note that this tutorial was for a version of LuaSTG that seemingly did not have the "Create Bullet Group" node (which can replicate what was achieved in this tutorial with far less hassle).
Also, you may notice that the tutorial makes use of Intervals within the Repeat node... and that the Sharps editor's Repeat node does NOT have an Interval parameter. This is something of a problem with trying to follow this tutorial.
When following and trying to recreate some of their examples, it is possible to use the Wait function in place of Interval. But in other scenarios, Wait will not work. I haven't figured out why Wait works sometimes but not others but be wary of that.

In case you're not just watching the video, when you create a Repeat node, you should see directly under the "Times [repeated] parameter four other parameters: these are Number of Var(iables), Var [no.] Name, Var [no.] Init Value and Var [no.] Increment.
Number of Var determines the number of variables in the Node. By default it is set to 1, meaning that besides "Times" and "Number of Var" there should be three other parameters (all related to each other). If you set the value higher, you will multiply the number of the three following parameters by whatever number you've inputted (i.e. you put "Number of Var" to 4, you will enable to Repeat node to have 4 sets of the following three parameters).
Those three parameters make up the Variable that will be used in conjunction with the Repeat node.
Var [no.] Name (1) is the variable name.
Var [no.] Init Value (2) is the init (initial?) value of the variable.
Var [no.] Increment (3) is the value of the increments.
1 is obvious. You must give your variable a name so that the program knows when you're using it. Note that there are some restrictions on what you can name your variable. I don't know these restrictions from the top of my head, but they are there, so not every type of name will work.
2 is the initial value of the variable. What is in the initial value? It's hard to explain because you can basically substitute variable into different parameters, and different parameters use the same values differently. Quick example. What happens if you use 0 on Velocity when creating a bullet? The answer is "you will spawn a bullet that doesn't move". Now what happens if you use 0 on Angle? The answer to that is "you will spawn a bullet fired at 0 degrees (aka to the right of itself)"... but even that's not true in all situations; a bullet fired at 0 degrees with Aim To Player active won't fire at 0 degrees, it'll fire at the player.
Why am I bringing up these examples? The answer is that you can actually use a Variable for these two parameters (i.e. Velocity and Angle) as well as others. However, as you can see, the init value is very context dependent which makes it tricky to explain. The only thing consistent about init value is that it's the starting value for our variable. No matter whether it's for angle or velocity, the number you put into the init value is the number the variable begins with.
Now, increment... Let's see what increment actually means. Merriam-Webster has this very convenient first definition of: "the amount or degree by which something changes". It's a useful definition for bringing up "amount or degree" since increment can change either of these, depending on the initial value of the variable. However, a more useful definition is this: "one of a series of regular consecutive additions".
This is what increment is really useful for. By combining a specific type of formula (made of Variables) with the Repeat function, you can make consecutive additions to... whatever it is you're doing. One application you might think of is changing a bullet to move slow or faster over time. What the video shows you to do is telling the game to change the firing angle of each bullet.
There are obvious functions to this, like making the game create a bullet that increases in speed, but the video shows you another application: you can use the Variable to tell the game to fire a bullet at consecutive angles. The picture example at 5:00 illustrates it perfectly.
The first bullet fired has the initial value (angle) of 0. After it's fired, the initial value changes because of the incremental value (36). When the second bullet fires, it uses the new value of 36... said value has now increased by 36 AGAIN so when the third bullet fires, it's now at 72 etc.
Let's recap:
Repeat nodes, by default, have 4 extra parameters besides "number of repeats". The first extra parameter determines the no. of extra variables (and their relevant parameters). The other three parameters determine the variable itself. Variable name allows the game to recognize the variable, and allows YOU to use it. Variable init value is the initial starting value of... whatever the variable is going to be used for (it could be the starting value for a change in velocity, a change in angle etc.). Variable increment is the value that the initial value is going to be consecutively changed by. (An extra note: the initial value doesn't need to be an additive value. The increment can be a negative value too. By using a negative value, you can make something move slower, or the angle can be a clockwise motion, instead of a counter-clockwise one).
As for how this all works: take note of the parameters in the Node they're showing off at 5:00. The Repeat node, set to repeat 10 times, has 1 Variable named "a", with init value 0 and incremental value 36. While inputting these parameters into the Repeat node is all well and good, there's one last important step. You can see it by looking at the Bullet node below it: the angle of the bullet is "a" (aka the Variable's name). This is how you tell the game that "I want you to use the Variable for this Parameter".

I think the next post will be the last in this series. Just because there's not much else an English-only reader of the tutorial is going to get (though there's also not many parts left to the tutorial too).

LONDON – Two heated rivalries will come to a head Saturday, Sept. 10 in a historic championship doubleheader at the O2 Arena in London.
The previously announced main event will see two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields, the WBC/WBA/IBF/Ring Magazine middleweight champion, aim to once again become undisputed at 160 pounds by facing longtime rival and WBO titleholder Savannah Marshall.
Shields and Marshall faced off as amateurs, with Marshall edging Shields by decision at the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China. Shields went 77-1 as an amateur and is the only female boxer to win undisputed titles in two weight classes.
In the co-feature, Mikaela Mayer will look to get one step closer to becoming the first undisputed champ in her division by putting her WBO/IBF/Ring Magazine junior lightweight titles on the line against WBC champion Alycia Baumgardner.
A total of seven world titles and two Ring Magazine belts will be on the line.
Promoted by Salita Promotions and Boxxer, in association with Top Rank, Shields-Marshall, Mayer-Baumgardner, and undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+
Mayer (17-0, 5 KOs) is a Los Angeles native who achieved international recognition when she represented the U.S. at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The following year, she signed with Top Rank and unleashed an impressive run of victories, including a one-sided decision over Ewa Brodnicka in October 2020 to capture the WBO 130-pound title. In 2021, she unified the WBO and IBF titles in an action-packed slugfest against Maiva Hamadouche, which also earned her the Ring Magazine belt. In her last outing, she retained her titles with a decisive win over former champion Jennifer Han. Mayer is confident that she will take a positive step forward toward becoming undisputed champion.

Though fighting on enemy turf in front of thousands of British fans, the native of Fremont, Ohio landed a perfectly timed counter right hand that knocked Harper out on her feet. Baumgardner then made the first defense of her crown in April with a shutout decision over former unified world champion Edith Soledad Matthysse. After months of exchanges on social media, Baumgardner did not mince her words about Mayer.
Baumgardner said, “When we are both gray and old, Mayer is still going to be having Alycia Baumgardner flashbacks. When she is lying horizontally in the ring, Mayer will think back to the first time my name left her mouth and she’s going to wish it hadn’t. I guess we’re going to find out if Regina George has a chin. Not only will Mayer feel my power, but her descendants are also going to feel what I do to her. Not only will I take Mayer’s belts, but I’ll take everything from her. She’ll be lucky if I let her keep her name. If I’m not haunting her dreams before the fight, I will be after it. Chapter (1/3): The Emperor’s Adviser
Summary: Tristan of Toussaint is a witcher, his life dedicated to following the Path of the Viper. It is curiosity more than anything that leads him to Emperor Emhyr var Emreis’s court. That is where he meets Dorian Pavus, lead sorcerer and adviser to the crown of Nilfgaard, and his life as he knows it changes for good.
They say that destiny is inexorable. Tristan is starting to see the wisdom in that saying.

“You are the witcher?”
Tristan glanced over his shoulder at the man who had spoken. He was a tall fellow, the black and white Nilfgaardian uniform he was wearing crisp and freshly pressed. He had a receding hairline and the skin on his face was dark and leathery, his lips pressed in a tight line, a hint of contempt lingering in his mousy brown eyes. He looked more like a tired, middle aged servant rather than Emperor Emhyr’s personal steward, like Tristan had been told he would meet.
He turned unhurriedly away from the crackling fire in the hearth, crossing his now well warmed arms before his chest. “You’re the footman?”
The man’s mouth twisted in a disgusted frown before he spun on his heel. “I am Var Heid, the Emperor’s steward. The Emperor is ready to receive you.”
“About bloody time,” Tristan muttered under his breath, just loud enough for Var Heid to hear him. If he had, he showed no sign of it.
The palace of Vizima was a large fortress, one of the largest Tristan had seen in a while. Labyrinthine, too; had his witcher training not given him an extraordinary sense of direction, he was sure he would have been lost three times over. Even so, he wasn’t entirely certain he could find his way to the nearest exit, not without having to knock down a wall or two.
He followed the man through the twisting corridors of the palace, his tough leather boots sinking in the plush carpet along the stone floor, letting his gaze sweep over the shining sets of armour and the paintings hanging on the high walls. When Tristan had arrived to the palace to hand in the notice he had found on the nearest village’s board, the sun had been just past the middle of the sky. Now, the snow on the western mountain tops was tinged pink and gold as the sun set, and the dancing light of torches cast eerie shadows on the walls as he walked. Tristan disliked waiting, and he had done his fair share of it ever since stepping foot in that place. The way the steward was walking now, with slow and leisurely movements, he suspected it would be well after nightfall when he would finally be done with this entire affair. So much for being curious, he thought, scowling at himself.
The servant soon led him to a small, winding staircase, at the foot of which he turned around to give him a quick lookover. His nose wrinkled more and more as his eyes trailed from his hair, hanging loosely about his shoulders, to his leather armour that had definitely seen better days, and lastly to his boots that were caked in mud.
“Your appearance is displeasing to the eye,” he said in a heavy Nilfgaardian accent that did nothing to hide his disgust. If anything, it highlighted it even more. “Under any other circumstances, I would have requested for a bath, a shave, a haircut and a change of clothes before presenting you to the Emperor. Alas, time is of the essence.”
“What’s wrong with my hair? Or my clothes, for that matter?”
A flash of amusement sparked in the man’s eyes. “They are… how do you say in your tongue… unseemly? Uncouth? Barbaric? Not to mention probably infested with lice.”
Tristan shrugged, scratching the light stubble on his cheeks. “Been on the road a while. Can’t be helped.”
“I suppose not.” The servant drew himself up with a sharp sniff. “May I at least ask whether you know how to address the Emperor?”
“Your Royal Magnificence, perhaps? Or your Majestic Brilliance?” Tristan said with a bored frown. He had been at this for hours and could already feel a warm dinner and a bed calling him.
The man sniffed again, more loudly this time. “I see you are in the mood for jests. I’m afraid the Emperor does not share your disposition. “Your Majesty” will suffice.”
“Fine,” Tristan grunted, rolling his eyes. “Let’s get on with it, shall we? Don’t have all bloody day.”
Var Heid made a small noise that sounded oddly like a harrumph and turned around, ascending the stairs. The guards at the door parted to let him pass, and he walked in with slow, steady footsteps, his back straight like he had swallowed a broomstick.
Tristan followed behind him, eager to get this done and over with.The room he stepped in was spacious, the carpets lining the floor rich and well made. The thread of gold tapestries on the wall glittered in the last light of the waning sun that streamed in through the tall stained glass windows, the rays dissolving in an array of warm colours. The man sitting on the gilded chair behind the large mahogany desk with the graying hair, the stately demeanour and the hawk-like eyes would have to be the Emperor. No doubt about that.
Var Heid had already started announcing his arrival in Nilfgaardian, his tone even and wooden as if he were reading from a book, when Tristan’s gaze fell on the man standing just a little way behind Emhyr, and his mouth almost fell open.
Tall, dark, imposing. Skin like burnished copper, rich and smooth like velvet. Black hair combed neatly in glossy waves, framing a face that should have belonged to a work of art. High cheekbones, almond-shaped eyes the colour of polished silver, a strong nose, a moustache perfectly curled, expertly shaped to highlight full, honey coloured lips. The black robe he was wearing was similar to those Tristan had seen a hundred times since stepping foot in that palace -the Nilgaardians were notorious for their love of uniformity- , yet on that man it looked… different. Elegant. Regal. Striking. Just a tad tighter along the chest and arms, the fabric on the shoulders arranged in such a way to leave a swath of skin exposed, the thread of gold and tiny pearls embroidered along his collar a touch more extravagant than perhaps expected. And the way he held himself, that proud tilt of his chin, those long, beringed fingers resting lightly against his folded arms, the quirk of his eyebrow, the glint in his eyes as they took him in, lazily gliding from his face, to his armour, to his mud-caked boots and up again. A slight curve at the edge of those luscious lips, and Tristan suddenly wished for the floor to split in two and engulf him.
There he was, in a room with the Emperor of Nilfgaard and the most handsome man he had ever laid eyes upon, and he looked like something that had crawled out of a bog. Wonderful. Just bloody wonderful.
Var Heid cleared his throat behind him before doubling over in a deep bow, snapping him out of his thoughts.
“Bow,” the man hissed.
It took great effort not to roll his eyes and grit his teeth as Tristan bent in a bow. Not quite as deep as Var Heid’s, and definitely not as refined as somebody’s who had spent their entire life bowing and scraping. But good enough.
He straightened awkwardly, trying his best to fix his gaze on the Emperor instead of on the man behind him. The Emperor of Nilfgaard’s gaze was just a tad less unnerving.
“Tristan of Toussaint?” Emhyr said slowly, as if trying to examine the truth of his statement. Tristan nodded. The Emperor’s eyes stayed on him for a long moment before a slight flick of his wrist sent Var Heid and the guards scrambling out of the room. The heavy doors closed firmly behind them, leaving Tristan alone with the Emperor and the strange man next to him.
Tristan drew himself up, taking advantage of every inch of his height, returning Emhyr’s scrutinizing stare levelly. It was evident that the man let the silence stretch to unsettle him, but he was a witcher. Witchers owed meak submission to no king, especially not Emhyr, who had all but declared witchers of his School enemies of Nilfgaard a few years before.
“Tales of you have spread far and wide,” Emhyr said slowly. “It is not common for a witcher’s name to be spoken so frequently. What brings you here?”
Tristan leaned on his back leg, hooking his thumbs behind his belt. “You put up a notice, searching for a witcher. Heard you’ve seen half a dozen, but sent them all away. Got curious. Came here to see for myself what the fuss is all about.”
The dark haired man behind the Emperor let out a soft exhale, that sounded like a breathy chuckle. Tristan gritted his teeth even harder, not taking his eyes away from Emhyr.
“This is Dorian Pavus,” Emhyr said, waving absently towards the man. “He is lead sorcerer and adviser to the throne.”
Tristan let his gaze drift to him, just in time to see his lips quirk in a tiny smirk as he gave him a short bow with his head. “Pleased to make your acquaintance, master… witcher,” he purred in a voice that slid down Tristan’s spine like warm, spiced honey. Damn him, was there anything about him that wasn’t perfect?
His jaw clenched so hard, he was sure he must have cracked a couple teeth. “Likewise,” he said in a clipped tone, returning to Emhyr. “With all due respect, Your Majesty, I would like to know what you want of me. The day isn’t getting any younger, and if my skills are not satisfactory for your quest, I’d like to be on my way before dark.”
The Emperor didn’t seem insulted by Tristan’s curt tone. He leaned back in his chair, elbow on the armrest, forefinger brushing against his thumb. “I believe my adviser will be able to explain things much better than I could.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty.” Pavus took a small step forward. “The quest you would be asked to undertake is of a highly confidential, and highly risky nature. If you accept to take this quest, you will be bound by an oath of secrecy and loyalty to the crown of Nilfgaard.”
“Witchers are bound to no king or county, or any oaths they would seek to impose. Witchers owe allegiance only to their respective schools. This is known.”
“It is indeed,” the mage replied in a calm and unaffected tone, as if he had fully expected his answer. “Yet, this is no ordinary contract. It is not about killing drowners or collecting water hag blood for hexes or whatever it is you witchers do these days.”
Tristan scowled at the man, annoyance flaring in his chest. “I hear a lot about what this contract is not, but not near enough about what it actually is. Care to enlighten me, or are we simply going to dance around it for another day or two?”
The mage’s eyes glinted with amusement. “Master Witcher is impatient, I see. Very well, let’s get straight to the point.” He drew himself up, clasping his hands behind his back. “The creature you are required to exterminate is a Fiend.”
Tristan’s mouth went dry. Fiends were walking mountains of muscle capped with horned, tooth-filled heads. Their size alone made them extremely dangerous – one blow from their powerful paws could kill a knight along with his fully armored mount. Their enormous heft also made them invulnerable to most signs; even witchers that had spent their lives specializing in the use of Aard, able to summon small windstorms at will, could not move a Fiend even an inch. They were quick, agile and inventive, and their wounds healed at lightning speed, yet all that was nothing compared to their true threat; the third eye located in the center of their forehead. A burning, watchful eye, meant to draw the Fiend’s prey into a state of hypnosis.
Hypnosis is the state of loss of control and consciousness, in which the person loses the power of voluntary action and sense of direction. During these times their victim does not see anything beyond this single burning eye – the last thing they see before their death.
The bestiary entry came to his mind unbidden, the contents of its pages etched into his brain ever since he was a child. He gave Pavus a hard look under furrowed brows. This had been a waste of time after all. “Are you out of your mind?” he said, huffing a scornful laugh. “You would need at least three witchers to take down a beast such as that, not to mention an entire apothecary’s worth of ingredients to make the bombs and oils needed.”
“You can have as many apothecaries’ worth of ingredients as you require. Yet I’m afraid that recruiting more witchers won’t be possible. The fewer people that know about this the better.”
“Then you can forget about it,” Tristan said. “There’s no way you will convince any witcher to take on this quest alone.”
Pavus’ lips curled in a smile. “Who said anything about being alone?” Tristan just blinked at him, and the mage’s smile got wider.
Emhyr shifted on his chair. “One of the terms of your contract is that Lord Pavus will be accompanying you to kill this beast. He will assist you in killing it, yet you are bound to keep him safe from harm and bring him back to Vizima after the quest has been completed.”
Tristan paused for a moment, his gaze shifting from Pavus to Emhyr and back. He crossed his arms before his chest, considering. “Where is that Fiend?”
“There have been sightings of one near Velen. In Crookback Bog.”
Crookback Bog. As dark, dank and treacherous a place as any there were. Tristan’s eyes narrowed in thought. The help of a mage would be significant when taking on that Fiend. Pavus seemed powerful enough. Tristan could just about feel his magic reaching him, rippling in the air around him. Were Tristan a mage he would have been able to gauge exactly how powerful his spells could be. Yet, even with the vague knowledge he had at that moment, he could tell that the man was a force to be reckoned with.
Still. Tristan was supposed to kill a Fiend, and keep the mage safe. Impossible.
“How much?” he asked the Emperor. The least they could do for asking him to do the impossible was make it worth his while.
“One thousand gold pieces.”
“Five thousand.”
The Emperor’s gaze flashed with something akin to indignation. He obviously wasn’t used to people bartering with him. “Three and a half.”
“Five,” Tristan said again, his tone even and flat. Emhyr’s lips tightened in a line, and Tristan shook his head. “You want me to kill a Fiend, a beast that no one has been known to defeat in at least two centuries, as well as be your sorcerer’s glorified wet nurse? You’ll have to pay for it. No way around it. Your Majesty,” he added, almost as an afterthought.
Emhyr’s hand tightened in a fist, and he took a sharp breath. “Very well,” he assented curtly. “Five thousand gold pieces it is. But know this, witcher; if you don’t bring either the Fiend or my sorcerer back, it will be your head.”
“You said you’ve heard about me,” Tristan said. “Then you surely know that I always keep my word once I give it.”
The Emperor regarded him for a long moment, so long in fact, that Tristan thought he had swallowed his tongue. In the end, he waved him away tiredly and sank back in his chair. “My steward will draw up the contract for you. It shall be ready tomorrow morning, before you leave. You are dismissed.”

The contract, written in neat, precise letters, had been just as rigid and binding as Tristan had expected it to be. He would receive half the gold before leaving for his quest, and the rest after he had returned with both the Fiend and the mage. It was an odd contract, to say the least, but Tristan wasn’t a stranger to odd situations. He had seen his fair share of them, travelling through the Continent. At least this one promised to be quite lucrative.
He mulled over his conversation with the Emperor the previous evening as he made his way to the stables. The stables the Nilfgaardians had put his horse in were warm and spacious, with clean hay and fresh water. The stableboys seemed skilled enough, but Tristan wouldn’t trust his mount to just about anyone.
Almond tossed her head back when she saw him, neighing gently. Tristan pulled a piece of dried apple from his pocket and gave it to her, idly brushing her coat as he formulated a meticulous plan in his mind. When travelling for a quest, details were important; which road to take to avoid the bandits lurking in the woods close to Velen, how many days would be needed to reach his destination, how many bombs and potions he would need to make. One of the first things a witcher was taught before hitting the road was how to plan ahead. An unprepared witcher is a dead witcher, or nigh on as good as one, was what Heir, his mentor ever since he was a child, would have said about then. She certainly had a lot of opinions when it came to proper preparation.
Tristan had just about finished saddling Almond when a smooth voice behind him drew his attention.
“A beautiful horse,” Pavus said. “Never seen the like.”
Tristan shot him a glance over his shoulder. He was dressed in practical travelling clothes, that still managed to be flashy somehow. The stout black woolen cloak he was wearing was decorated with thick white fur around the collar and his boots that peeked under the hem of his robe were made of soft black leather, with coiling and twisting snakes carved along the sides. His cheeks were flushed from the crisp morning air, but other than that he looked as formidable and his expression as unreadable as any mage Tristan had met. They were a troublesome, secretive lot, to say the least, and most of them weren’t particularly fond of witchers, so far as he was aware.
“Wouldn’t expect you to,” Tristan replied, fastening the last hook on Almond’s saddle, testing the girth one final time. “Her breed is native to Toussaint.”He caught her reins and gently led her out of the stall. Pavus’ eyes glided over him again, and this time Tristan returned his look calmly. His armour had been cleaned and mended, and he did manage to have a bath and shave the previous night. Var Heid wouldn’t let him get into bed unless “any and all pests were eradicated”, as he had said.
Pavus walked beside him, nodding to the stable boy who followed them with his own horse readied and saddled. It was a beautiful steed, its dark coat glistening in the grey morning sun, the thick muscles of its chest rippling as it moved. It was strong and looked agile enough to be ridden into battle, if it had been trained for it. Heir had often insisted that he have a horse like that. Your horse is pretty, she would say, but witchers have no need for pretty horses. Tristan believed that, too. Yet letting go of Almond was not something he was ever about to do, at least not willingly.
He threaded his fingers through her buttery white mane before placing his foot on the stirrup.
“I didn’t know witchers to be sentimental.”
Tristan froze, his brows furrowed in a perplexed frown. “Huh?”
Pavus smiled at him as he gracefully climbed on his horse, his cloak falling softly around its trunk. “You’re from Toussaint. Your horse is from Toussaint. Is that a mere coincidence? Or a way for you to remember home, perhaps?” He kicked his horse forward, hardly waiting for an answer.
Tristan scrambled hastily onto his saddle, urging Almond to a canter until she reached Pavus’ horse. “Witchers have no home,” he said flatly.
“You say that,” Pavus said with some amusement, “yet you’re the one sporting a regular courser when you should have had a charger, or a destrier, to say the least.”
“She’s not just a ‘regular’ courser,” Tristan grumbled, frowning at the derision in his tone. “She’s…”
She had been a gift from his twin sister on their twentieth birthday. Witchers didn’t usually have any connection to family after taking up their training, especially not those of his School. Heir would certainly be displeased if she ever found out that he still kept contact with them, and even visited his sister from time to time. He wasn’t about to say all that to a sorcerer he had just met, though, and who looked overly eager to get under his skin.
He closed his mouth, staring stubbornly ahead of him, over Almond’s ears. The mage chuckled softly. “No answer to that, I see. Interesting. I maintain my original observation, then. You are sentimental for a witcher.”
“And you are very talkative for a mage,” Tristan retorted irritably. “I thought your kind wouldn’t even deign to talk to someone who “collects water hag blood for hexes”, or whatever it is you think witchers do, unless someone held a knife at your throat. Perhaps not even then.”
Pavus through his head back, his silvery laughter cutting through the crisp morning air. “Knives? Ha! Who would use a knife against a mage? Even witchers can’t be that coarse.”
Tristan glared at him. “What did you just say?”
“Is the master witcher’s hearing impeded? Has he lost that as well as his ability to reason? Perhaps it’s all that hair.” He reached out, gently brushing Tristan’s hair behind his ear. “There. That’s better.”
Tristan blinked at him for a moment, startled by the unexpected touch. He tried to ignore the odd, tingling sensation that spread down his spine at the lingering feeling of the mage’s gloved fingers on his skin as he scowled at him. “My ears are fine. Yours won’t be for long if you keep at this.”
Pavus batted his long, black eyelashes at him. “Oh? What will you do to them, pray tell? If you must know, I quite enjoy ear massages. You can bite them, too, if you’d like. Not too hard, mind you. Or I might bite back.” He flashed him a wide, teasing smile as he kicked his horse to a trot, riding ahead of him once more.
Tristan just stared after him and the snow that his horse’s hooves kicked in his direction, his mouth slightly agape. When his tongue had been sufficiently frozen by the biting chill, he snapped his jaw closed, muttering curses under his breath. Were all mages that mouthy? And if not, had he been fool enough to agree to a quest with the only one?

As the hours dragged on, with Tristan rocking on his horse and Pavus talking his ear off, he was convinced that he was, in fact the mouthiest mage in the Continent. Tristan had been used to the endless days of travel and the infinite hours of silence that these ensued - often spending days at a time talking only to Almond. There were moments when the silence sounded deafening in his ears. It wasn’t unusual for him to wish for some company during those quiet moments.
Oh, how he missed those moments now.
The mage talked as the expansive orchards around Vizima gave way to the green, rolling hills of Temeria. He talked as the rolling hills descended into dense, forested land. He kept on talking as the woods became sparser the closer they rode to the swamps of Velen. Tristan did his best to reply to Pavus’ quips and jokes as laconically as he could, hoping his half hearted grunts would hide the flush that often crept up his cheeks at his blatant teasing and flirting.
Flirting. How long had it been since anyone had flirted with him? Far too long, obviously, if a mere glance, a smile or an accidental touch whenever they stopped to water their horses or set up camp could make heat flare in his chest like that. Most people in their right minds didn’t want much to do with witchers, staying well out his way unless they absolutely had to. Tristan was used to the curses muttered through tight lips, and the fearful glances, and the invocations to Melitele or whichever god they prayed to as soon as he turned his back. It didn’t irk him much anymore. It was better when people were afraid of him; it made his work easier. Simpler. He would get the job done, get paid, and get on his way. Getting too attached to anyone, or any place, was never a good thing.
He was accustomed to all that. Marginally comfortable with it, even. What he wasn’t accustomed to was… him.
Pavus never missed a chance to talk, or touch or be overly familiar with him. Worse, he showed no fear or apprehension whatsoever, as if his being a witcher was a mere trait to be overlooked. Tristan had met hundreds of people in his life - those that didn’t see him as a freak or an emotionless killer he could count on the fingers of one hand. It was odd, to not be regarded like that for once. More than odd it felt… exhilarating.
Which was a dangerous feeling to have, especially when it regarded the advisor of the Emperor of Nilfgaard. Tristan always sought to keep his affairs simple, neat, tidy, and this was proving to be anything but that. He had been given a task; kill the Fiend and bring the mage back, and that was what he intended to do. All he intended to do, in fact.
Thus, he resolved to avoid the mage as best he could. He would keep his responses short and curt, and every night when they stopped to make camp, he would tend to Almond or pretend to keep watch a little further away from the fire until Pavus retreated under his bedroll.
The third night they had camped together was much like the others. Tristan had spent an inordinate amount of time tending to Almond, or making sure his snares were set up just right, yet he had returned to the fire to find Pavus still up. He was reading from a thick, leather-bound tome, his eyes swiftly following the letters on the page. Those silver, glittering eyes snapped up to his face when he walked within the dancing halo of the fire.
“Taken care of business so quickly? That’s a first.”
Tristan grunted as he sat cross legged before the fire, fishing his flask out of his pocket.
“What is that? Whisky?”
“Brandy,” Tristan responded. “From Aedirn.”
Pavus let his book fall closed and shifted a little closer. “Aedirn? You have very fine taste. Have you tried Kaedweni brandy? It’s even better. Here, have some,” he said, taking a flask out of his own pocket and extending it to him.
Tristan shook his head sharply, staring at the fire. From the corner of his eye, he saw the mage shrugging and uncorking his flask. The smell of the brandy reached his nostrils, as well as the scent of Pavus’s cologne, drifting towards him with the wind. His witcher senses tingled and focused, zooming in to a sharp point. Smell of oakmoss and sandalwood, cardamom and cloves, mingled with something deep and earthy and slightly musky, emanating from those pulse points in his throat and his wrists. Tristan took a deep breath, letting that intoxicating scent fill his lungs. He swallowed thickly when he realised his mouth was watering.
He clenched his jaw, taking a long sip from his flask. It was just a smell. He could ignore it, if he tried hard enough. He had been trained since childhood to ignore far more aggravating situations. It took a few long, agonizing minutes, yet he somewhat managed to get the unruly thoughts under control.
To his dismay, the mage cleared his throat, glancing his way again. “Been to Velen before?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Several times, I gather. You seem to know the way rather well.”
“Uh-huh.”
“Are there lots of beasts there to be killed?”
Tristan simply shrugged.
Pavus leaned back on his elbow upon the covers of his bedroll, shifting his half lying body to face him. His head was cocked to the side, the shifting light of the fire illuminating the soft, delicate skin of his neck. It felt to Tristan that if he focused enough, he could see his life essence pulsating under that soft, velvety skin, feel the energy that was vibrating in his body. A spark, bright and unexpected, flared in his chest. He frowned, stomping it down tenaciously.
“I never knew travelling like this could be so wearisome,” Pavus sighed. “Want to know what I miss the most?”
“A comfortable bed?” Tristan asked before he could stop himself. “Or a warm bath? I know I would miss those.”
“Wrong on both accounts. Although I wouldn’t say no to either. Especially the latter.” He smoothed his long fingers through his dark, glossy waves, staring wistfully at the fire. “I rather miss the bards in the palace. They always played the most wonderful songs after the evening meal. Perfect to talk and drink some fine wine over.” He tipped the mouth of his flask over his lips, his throat bobbing as he swallowed. His slender, delicate throat. How Tristan wanted to brush his thumb over the sides of that long, elegant neck. Then slowly run his tongue over those tendons, follow them until they led him to the dip in his collarbone. Then he would work each button of that snug coat of his free, and then…
Stop. Looking!
Tristan bit his lip as he glanced at his boots, pretending to pick at their buckles. Suddenly, the mage’s eyes sparked, a huff of excitement rushing past his lips. “Oh, but what am I saying? Who needs a bard when I have a witcher? And not just any witcher. The infamous Tristan of Toussaint.
“I would hardly call myself infamous.”
“Wouldn’t you? There isn’t one person in Vizima that doesn’t know about you preventing the assassination of the Duchess of Toussaint. Or about your slaying of that basilisk that terrorised Ellander for months, all on your own. You must have all sorts of stories to tell.”
Tristan grunted, staring at the fire as he sipped on his brandy.
“Come now,” Pavus pleaded, his voice soft and sing-songy. “Tell me a story, oh broody one.”
Tristan frowned at him. “I am not brooding.”
“Very well, scowling in a very attractive manner, then.” Tristan rolled his eyes, and the mage’s smile got even wider. “Just one teeny, tiny story. I promise I’ll make it worth your while.”
“How would you do that exactly?”
“There are a couple ways that spring to mind,” he replied, wiggling his eyebrows at him. “Care for me to… elaborate?”
Tristan’s cheeks shouldn’t have felt as hot as they did with the unspoken promise in his gaze. His pulse shouldn’t have quickened either at the sound of his honey smooth voice, lowering to almost a purr. He gritted his teeth. “No. No stories.”
The mage sighed, yet still he didn’t give up. “Alright, then. What if I promise to tell you something, too? Tit for tat, if you will.”
Tristan’s focus snapped to him. “Like what?”
Pavus’s eyes sparked with amusement at having drawn his attention. “You haven’t really asked me anything since we set off. Aren’t you interested to know why I had to come with you? Or why the Fiend needs to be killed?”
Tristan narrowed his eyes. “I thought this was confidential information.”
“It is,” he shrugged. “As you can see, I am that desperate for some entertainment.” His gaze slid slowly from his face all the way down his torso, as if peeling his armour off, layer by layer.
Tristan’s hand curled into a fist around the mouth of his flask. What was the man doing, teasing and flirting with him so… so… shamelessly? Were all mages the same way? He was infuriating. What was even more infuriating was that his breeches now felt way tighter than they did a few moments before.
“Witchers don’t ask questions,” he said flatly, pushing down the wave of warmth that rushed through him. “A monster needs to be killed, we kill it. After the pay has been negotiated.”
“Are all witchers so diligent and focused as you are, I wonder? Or is it just your School?”
“There aren’t many of us left.” Tristan thumbed the amulet hanging by his neck, the viper head cold to the touch. “Besides, even if there were, I can’t talk for anyone other than myself.”
Pavus regarded him thoughtfully for a moment, his features unusually serious. “Perhaps it is just you, then.” He took a small swig from his flask, his gaze fixed on the fire for a long moment before he spoke again. “It must be hard.”
“What?”
“Being like you,” he said softly. “You must be very lonely.”
Tristan’s mouth went dry. He opened it. Shut it. Opened it again, but no sound came out. They gazed at each other, Tristan’s bewildered stare meeting Pavus’ calm silver gaze. There was no teasing glint in his eyes now, no mockery or flirting; only something that looked like… sympathy. Understanding, even.
He cleared his throat abruptly, just as his heart threatened to beat out of his throat. He screwed the cap back on his flask, standing up. “You should get some rest. We have an early start tomorrow. I’ll keep watch.”
Without another word, he walked off towards the edges of the ring of firelight, kneeling into a meditative position. He could feel the mage’s gaze lingering on his back for several long, agonizing minutes, until Tristan finally heard his breaths easing into a deep sleep.
The night that stretched beyond their small fire suddenly seemed dark enough to swallow him whole.
