A GHOST FROM THE PAST

Many years ago, when I was first starting out in my career as a journalist, I worked on a team with an investigator that was very interested in the Bayerleyn Retinue. At the time, none of us thought there was anything wrong with them, so we didn’t take her mission seriously.

Eventually, fed up of our mockery, she sought to join the Retinue’s ranks to gather evidence for a story from within their ranks, and increasingly reported sexually coercive behaviour from their leader, Shonn Bayerleyn. I wish we had taken this seriously.

A few weeks in, she told us that she was going to a private meeting with Shonn--and-- whilst struggling to put on the Bayerleyn Retinue tabard we had been using to dry our hands on, I called out to her: “Just don’t get pregnant!”

It’s the last thing I ever said to her. We don’t know what happened, but she has not been seen since. I think about her frequently, and regret not seeking to protect her, so imagine my shock when I receive a snapograph in the post taken from around the time of her dissapearance (I know this from the identities of the three censored women).

This image is a little blurry and was taken in a hurry (as evidenced by the lack of time to allow the snapograph to develop a snap in colour), but this stands as evidence of all that we have come to know about this man and the attitude he holds toward the women in his employment.

The multi-hued sky during the dusk, with the glittering stars littered everywhere, enhances the beauty of the lake.
