I had to cause to explain to a new group of people on Discord why I’m into Snape, and because I’ve never given my 101 on this blog either, I’m copying it over!
shoot, I think this means I have to start from pitching snape. the appeal is not always obvious
okay so... the thing about snape is that he totally fucked up his life, he's dumb, he screwed himself over in ways that he could never forgive himself for when he was 20 and never moved on
one of my favorite lines from him in a snapefic is when lupin or harry is asking him why he joined the death eaters and he says something like "they tolerated me" (my headcanon is a bit different but I agree that it was the only place he thought he could fit in at all)
I don't think he ever did anything for a compelling positive reason
and I think he never ever grew out of the adolescent thing where it's unthinkable to be emotionally genuine, to be okay to be embarrassed sometimes. And because his career was set by a powerful patron keeping him out of prison, he taught at the school he was bullied in, repeating the same behaviors, unable to feel powerful or liked
I think he is totally unwilling to e.g. dance
(I was totally unwilling to dance until I felt okay being a Silly Guy and he definitely never felt okay being a Silly Guy. being silly is wonderful if you're accepted, awful if you're in a hostile environment where you're trying to deflect mockery etc)
and similarly to never dancing, I think the thought of being genuine and potentially laughable in bed scares him so much that he never loosens up enough to have good sex in his whole life – he desexualizes the hell out of himself! once he admits to himself that he's a sexual being he has to reckon with how totally terrified and unprepared he is to seek what he wants with other people
some fanons think he gets laid like a regular person but I disagree
He's noxious and insecure
I do agree that he gets some student crushes because the coolness he performs is geared towards the adolescent stage of social competition
anyway I find this terror of sex and self-desexualization just as interesting and hot when he's a lesbian and convinced she's fundamentally unlike the women she's attracted to and they'll never like her back

he did a u turn for the only really positive relationship he'd had and it was too little too late. the futility of that gesture really gets to me - five years after a friend breakup that was his fault, he's on his knees willing to give everything he's built up so far to try to save her life
and then he bullies her son for years! stupid!

there's a ~300pg book titled "snape: the definitive reading" which contains one really good bit I'd never thought of before the author pointed it out
so Snape's first? words to Harry are "ah yes, our resident celebrity" and he never stops making digs about how Harry enjoys and benefits from his fame, which ofc Harry resents the fuck out of
It's so... (happy meltdown) fucked up and emotionally coherent...
he never fucking grew up! But he's also - intellectual, intelligent, capable of discipline and courage, and sacrifice for love. I fucking crave for him to be loved and supported so he can grow up
he has such a long way to go and I believe he could! and he never does, he dies without ever
he's like a personal growth white whale. As a writer I want to set him on that long way, kicking and screaming, in denial about how much he has to gain

Thank you for making The Snarry Sexposition List. The majority of those fics are irreverent and unapologetic about their sex and kink positivity without the Christian guilt and dysphoria which is the new normal in fic nowadays. If you are taking rec list requests, can I request more recs along those lines?

For more fics like that you can check out Amanuensis, Rexluscus, DementorDelta, Celandine, Venivincere, Ziasudra, pir8fancier, calligryphy, LoupGarou, cluegirl, persepolis130. Tbh I definitely get some Christian guilt vibes from some of the fics from these authors. But it's pretty hard to get Snapefic without that vibe because of the canon characterization. Loupgarou is the goto one I rec if you really dont want the Christianity vibes. 100% irreverent/unapologetic.
In my experience fics matching that vibe are easier to find in the 2005 to 2011 timeframe in the Snarry fandom/HP fandom. Post HBP to last movie. Before that can be harder because Harry and his friends were pretty young in the first books and didn't really have a lot of slash fic in the irreverent/unapologetic slash fic outside like hardcore dirtybadhotwrong or like detention fics. Definitely some great fics in that category and also lots of exceptions like canon divergence series but generally speaking ofc.
After 2011 is also pretty different. Hard to explain but definitely some general changes in fandom/hp fandom type of fics that got written. We don't really have irreverent/unapologetic vibe but we have lots of deaddove vibes now. Idk why but it's not the same at least for me. Love both but they just feel like different categories to me.
If you want new fics with the same vibe I feel your best bets are probably perverse_idyll and eldritcher. Perverse Idyll is technically more on the sex for angstposition side but also really really hot, irreverent, unapologetic sex. Definitely some Christian guilt vibes but it just adds to the hotness vibe IMO. Eldritcher is probably the least fucks given irreverent/unapologetic in the gay smut exposition sense writer I have read but the guilt part of their Snape is generally not about Sin? It's more about failure + remorse + 50% resignation 50% hope + dark humor which can work/not work depending on what you like. I feel the guilt difference can be a serious deal breaker because HP canon definitely has a hardcore Christian Sin vibe framing. Does Snape think he is born flawed? Or like does he think he did big mistakes? I feel one type of guilt is definitely more Christian compared to the other? Either works for me but of course just my opinions. YMMV.

The potion fails because you were writing Snapefics in class and Snape shakes his head in disappointment. He later makes you explain sexual terms in front of the class because he doesn't understand thirst lingo

i USE SIMS 4MADE SNAPE'S HOUSE (WHICH IS LOCATED ON SPINNER'S END ) BASIC ON THE MOVIE AND THE FANFICTION OF WITCHIMAGE ,HOE YOU ENJOY IT
Still, you don’t mind. It gives you a chance to snoop. You crack open the door closest to the landing and find a small bathroom—it’s straight out of 1922, with silver-green walls and a clawfoot bath. You eye the tub for a second, considering all the uses it could be put to, before shutting the door and moving on.
The next door leads to what can only be his bedroom—large bed, black sheets, gray blankets. You back out immediately—plenty of time to get acquainted, and there’s one more room up here.
The final door leads to a small office. The walls are, oddly enough, painted black in here—at least from what you can see around the bookcases. There’s a desk, a lamp, a chair, all in dark colors, all in Severus’ signature comfortable yet elegant style. You’re a bit surprised

Instead of dying, Snape moves to New York. A Severus Snape/Narcissa Malfoy and Severus Snape/Regulus Black story.
An Incident at the Mill
the millrat AU
A series of vignettes on what could’ve happened if Tobias Snape had been badly injured in an accident at the mill, forcing Severus to drop out of Hogwarts before the Prank. Predominantly Lilycentric. Snily shippers, rejoice: most of the vignettes are from Lily’s point of view, featuring her as flawed, passionate, bullheaded, comfortable in her sexuality, quick to curse and quicker to laugh at herself–and with a complicated relationship to alcohol and the Wizarding World.

Carefully he slides it out of the plastic. There’s writing on the back: ‘Weavers, Sev & Lily, 1976. to Baba O’Riley and the rest of our lives!!’ The writing is familiar, spidery, almost indecipherable, and he squints because it reminds him of someone, it’s strangely familiar, and then he drops the photo in shock. Because he knows: that’s Severus Snape.”

Severus comes to consciousness into a dream of Potter reenacting his worst memory-and then Lily Evans comes tearing in at age sixteen, rather than as the more mature adult his subconscious normally designs her. They call this closure?

Triple-cross! Mitarashi Anko of the Village Hidden in the Leaves joins Severus Snape as one of Dumbledore’s agents, seeking to train the Boy-Who-Lived to understand his mental connection to Lord Voldemort. Snape thinks that they really didn’t need to hire a goddamn technicolor ninja to fill the DADA position, but at least it’s not one of Fudge’s underlings taking charge–wait, he has to put up with her anyway? More seriously, Anko and Severus discover a connection between their cursed marks and the Potter boy’s scar, Dumbledore expedites the plot, and Voldemort weaves an insidious plot, inspired by Lord Orochimaru, to take over the Resistance–from the inside.
Incomplete and officially dead.
