Are they called scutes because they help the snake scoot this is urgent
Jokes that I immediately write into my educational programs
Because of this ask I found myself talking to my snakes and saying "aw, look at your little scoots!" Belly scales were cute enough to begin with and now that's increased by at least twenty percent.

Are there other iridescent snakes other than rainbow boas and those ones that live in the dirt? Is that something that can be selectively bred for?
Iridescence is pretty common for snakes to have at least on parts of their bodies! It's not something that can really be bred for, though, as it comes down to how scales are structured. But if you look for it, you can find it just about everywhere!
Kingsnakes have beautiful iridescence on their bellies!
And if you catch any reticulated python in the right light, they just shine!
Even ball pythons look iridescent in the right lighting!
