Hi there! First, I wanna say I absolutely love your works; they are all great, and I enjoy reading every one of their reactions!
Can I request to see HLC (including professors) react to MC sniffing them (out for many reasons, but mainly they want to remember their smell)? Just genuinely curious about what they would usually smell like :) Thank you! And wish to see more works of yours!
A/N: laughing so hard the whole time writing this 🤣
HLC REACT TO MC SNIFFING THEM
SEBASTIAN SALLOW: Old books and smoke. He smells like a stack of forgotten tomes that were set on fire. He raises an eyebrow and laughs. "You're not going to lick me next, are you?"
OMINIS GAUNT: Clean linens and a touch of mint. "...did you just sniff me?" One would think he'd be used to MC's weird behavior by now. Alas, he is not.
ANNE SALLOW: Wild flowers. She smells like she's been laying out in a meadow in spring. She smells her own robes. "What? Do I smell bad?"
IMELDA REYES: Broom polish and various wood scents. She gives MC a strong side-eye glare. "What are you doing?"
NATSAI ONAI: Incense and fresh cut grass. She gives MC an unsure look but smiles anyway. "You're acting strange. Even by your standards."
GARRETH WEASLEY: He smells like an apothecary shop threw up on him, that also exploded. "What? Do I still smell like burnt rat hair? I thought I got that out."
LEANDER PREWETT: Cheap cologne that screams "try hard", but at the same time isn't overly offensive. He side steps away from MC. "Please, stop that."
AMIT THAKKAR: Parchment and spilled ink. He startles when MC sniffs him and he jumps away like a startled cat. "What was that about?"
EVERETT CLOPTON: Depends on the day. There is no consistency with him. Some days he smells like a pack of dung bombs, others he smells like a summer breeze. He sweats nervously, hoping that MC doesn't smell dung bombs.
POPPY SWEETING: Ever smelled a horse with feathers? That's her. She watches MC curiously. "What are you sniffing around like a niffler for?"
~~~
ELEAZAR FIG: A well kept library. Old leather and parchment. He sniffs MC back. "I'd say we're both due for a wash after all the running around we've been doing."
MATILDA WEASLEY: Orchids, her favorite floral scent. She gives MC an unsure glance. "You could just ask what perfume I use."
CHIYO KOGAWA: Leather and sweat. Even with quidditch canceled, she's always out and about the grounds. "Don't sniff. That's rather rude."
AESOP SHARP: The wizard equivalent of Old Spice and a hint of fire whiskey. He just rolls his eyes. He doesn't get paid enough for this.
ABRAHAM RONEN: Sugar and cinnamon. Always smells like he just came back from Honeydukes. "Oh my, do I smell bad?" He's genuinely concerned and smells his own robes.
MIRABEL GARLICK: A garden. Flowers, soil, pottery; the whole shabang. "I was repotting mandrakes with the third years today. Sorry if I smell a bit ripe." She laughs.
MUDIWA ONAI: Incense and palm oil. She offers MC some incense. "Would you like to burn some for your dorm? You smell like you could use it."
BAI HOWIN: She works in beast pens all day. Enough said. MC doesn't even need to get close to smell her on some days.
DINAH HECAT: Amazingly. Nothing. Her time as an unspeakable has taught her to be undetectable, even by smell. Old habits die hard.
CUTHBERT BINNS: He doesn't so much give off a scent, as he does a cold chill if MC gets too close.
SATYAVATI SHAH: VERY faint smell of cherry blossom. She's very guarded of her personal space, so MC will have a hard time catching it.
PHINEAS NIGELLUS BLACK: Expensive cologne and hair tonic. He steps away from MC. Ew. Students.
Who is your favorite Arcane artist?
Oh lord.
Arcane has such an insanely talented array of artists - I legit wouldn't know who to choose, if I could choose at all.
I'll just dump love on 'em<3
@aromansoul is to artwork what Mozart is to symphonies - every single piece feels like a fantasy epic and will give you shivers with the sheer incoherent-making awesomeness. Just... the colors, the composition, the frames. Everything is drool-worthy.
@goathag has a wonderfully detailed style that's reminiscent of old Lemony Snicket illustrations but also so beautifully zany and unique (and in equal turns hilarious and heartwarming). I re-read their Jinx and Silco comics and go 'Aww' everytime.
@shahs1221 will knock your socks off with their brilliant use of coloring, and make you go Va-Va-Vooooom at the crisp linework, impeccable body language and stellar facial expressions. Shahs takes smoking hot characters and makes them smolder.
@iseutz has a style that makes you feel as if you've walked straight into an animated epic from the golden Don Bluth era of cinema. Every gradation of color makes your jaw drop and gives you butterflies. Also did I mention it's dizzyingly pretty? *_*
@silcosentropy is my absolute favorite for gritty linework, staggering levels of detail, and bold coloring. They also never 'filter' the lines, scars and wrinkles that are so intrinsic to a unique character design (and to the human experience) and the results are nothing short of breathtaking.
@dcartcorner will make you feel like you're in a 90's arcade with the poppy colors, fresh compositions, adorable expressions, and general atmosphere of whimsical nostalgia. Bonus: they do rarepair artwork and their AU's are loads of fun.
@captaincapslock takes the crown for the most awesome Saturday Morning Cartoons style. Their 'Welcome to the Lanes' comic makes me feel like a kid tuning in to watch my favorite show way back in the 90s, and the energy is sharp, zippy, and bold, with ingenious use of frames.
@frenchublog is a feast for the eyes and I cheer every time they post. Their mastery of dynamic poses, off-kilter angles and lively character expressions all pack so much personality and punch. Also their Silco & Jinx pieces break my heart.
@pluviofleur has the most fun and fantastic twists to each character. Their sheep!Silco and monkey!Jinx are delightful and full of so much drama and personality. Also they do ponies. So many ponies.
@zkyfall does fabulous line drawings and monochrome works that have such a classic Bond-era vibe. Their Silco also looks deliciously scrunkly and full of Tired Dad energy.
@perfectlywingedart takes the cake for artwork that makes you feel like you are EATING cake. The textures have such a smooth finish and the lines are so sleek and the colors are so yum. Very lickable artwork :3
@revewrites does delightful doodles with lovely pastel colors and a fabulous caricature style like you'd see on old school Victorian-era comics. Silco's ears hehehe...
@lipsticksandmolotovs would not call themselves a fanartist - but their gif designs, manips, graphics and web layouts are absolute eye candy and deserve all the kudos.
These are just some of the artists whose works I enjoy - and whom I can recall off the top of my head. This fandom has many, many, MANY awesome artists and each of them deserve all the praise and hugs.
Thank you for sharing your talent and making the fandom brighter 💗
darling, dearest
pairing: din djarin/the mandalorian x reader
summary: immediately after the events of chapter 12, the child has a messy coat and din struggles with the revelation of his enemy’s survival. the stress drives him to need what he never asks for: affection.
word count: 1.4k
warnings/content: mentions of canon emesis, reader eating, caring din, SOFTNESS! TENDERNESS!
note:
cyar’ika (shar-EE-kah): darling, sweetheart
buir: father
cyare (shah-ray): loved, beloved
kov’nyn: mandalorian gesture for a kiss, the gentle tapping of helmets at the forehead
Tumblr media
Din has one hand on the controls, the other holding out the edge of his cape to the child, whose plushy tan coat is covered in a blue stickiness.
Over the comlink comes Greef Karga’s invitation, but Din shuts him down.
“Sorry, I got some onboard maintenance to take care of. Then we’ll have to hit the road before Gideon catches wise.”
Din passes the clean up duty to you.
“Cyar’ika...? Cyar’ika, would you get that?” Din whispers, extending the cloth edge to where he knows you’re standing. You grasp it and rub the woolly fabric against the mess, winning yourself a series of nauseous coos.
Din focuses on his controls, stewing over the life he thought he took, and leans his right shoulder back to give you more fabric to work with.
It’s quiet. Razor Crest trembles and rises, though the ride is smoother since the repairs.
You rub off as much as you can, crouched by the child -- a little frustrated at how easily stained the tiny jacket is -- and you realize you’ve never seen him without it.
“You guys okay back there?” The modulated voice cuts through your thoughts.
“Yeah.” Turning your head, you match your gaze to Din’s visor. The child’s hands rise in the air, reaching for you where you’re crouched in front of him, and he grabs a tuft of hair. He giggles to himself, happy to be distracted, but Din cuts it short.
“Hey, hey-- no pulling, kid.” His gloved hand reaches out in a fatherly “don’t embarrass me!” kind of way, but the tugging on your hair is so light, and the child’s eyes are so big and wondrous, you let it go.
“It’s okay, I’ll get him out of this seat.”
Din swivels back to face the control panel, “I’ll be down soon.”
Unbuckling the seatbelt, you reach your hands gently under the child’s arms, humming along to his soft coos.
“Ate too much, didn’t you?” Your shoes sound on the metal flooring, a light pitter-patter, then they cease as you reach the ladder to the bottom of the ship, “It’s been a big day, buddy.”
You shift him into the crook of one arm.
Climbing down the ladder with one hand used to be hard, except now, it’s as common as Din telling the child to “help out”... which more than often ends in a crying spell, or a puff of smoke and a laughing spell.
Steady on the bottom floor, you fiddle around in the compartment of little foodstuff packs Din prepared, until you find a water container.
“Here, kid,” you open it and dip your fingertips in, rubbing the droplets along the blue stripe on his coat, “this should help a bit more.”
His green hands run along the back of yours in an affectionate way, holding tighter when you try to wet your fingers again.
“You tired?”
He seems to understand those words well enough, shaking his head no.
“What do you need?”
Both arms stretch out.
“Oh, I gotcha, little guy, I gotcha.”
You hold him up to your chest and he goes silent, save for a few hiccups. The child settles his face into your neck, growing even quieter as you start to sway with him.
Up the ladder, Din sets the course for hyperspace, destination Corvus.
For a moment, he removes his helmet. In the solitude of the cockpit, the air on his skin is cool, fresh. He runs fingers through his hair, sighing and releasing something pent up within him, until it turns into a repressed groan.
The hands in his hair now run down his face, rough, until they slip off his chin and arrive with a thump on his thighs.
Din is at a loss.
He puts the helmet back on, leaving the cockpit.
You’re humming the child to sleep when he gets to the bottom of the ladder, and he watches from there.
The child peeks at him from over your shoulder, but he’s too tired to reach for his buir. Din takes a shaky breath at the impact of it, of the child’s droopy eyes and your swaying body, the two beings he holds dearest to his heart tenderly holding onto one another.
Din comes closer, hand meeting the small of your back.
“You alright?” His fingers spread wider over your shirt.
“Mhm…” Your head falls into the space between his neck and pauldron.
Din doesn’t stiffen.
He accepts this act of affection easier than any other you’ve shown before.
His free hand slides along the fuzzy head of the child.
“Put him down, cyare. You must be tired too.” His voice has a refined softness to it, the grit lessened and lost by the warm feeling in his chest, underneath the armour.
“I--” you want to argue out of decency, but you know he’s right, and he’s lifting the child from your arms anyway, putting him in the sling.
He turns back to you.
“Hungry?”
“No,” you fiddle with your hands, lacing them together in front of you.
“Huh,” he meets you in one large step, breaking your hands apart and replacing them with his own, “do you know the last time you ate?”
“Yeah, this morning--”
“--Which was a long time ago. Come on,” he urges you to go back up the ladder, grabbing a packet of foodstuff behind you, “you’ll have a snack.”
He watches you throw a worried glance to the child, “He’ll be alright. Get up there, okay?”
Your hands have trouble grasping the bars tight, although you make it up without slipping. You drop into the passenger seat and await your Mandalorian.
He’s up thirty seconds later.
“Hey,” he gives you a container of different things to eat, “you don’t have to eat all of it. Just have something.”
“Thank you.”
Din finds a seat on the floor by your chair, his knees up and his elbows resting on them.
You take a small bite of the first thing that caught your eye, and you’re met with a fruity sort of taste from the block of food.
“What about you? Are you hungry?” You extend the container to him.
“No, no,” he waves it off, but you don’t miss the shakiness in his hands.
“You’re trem--”
“I know.”
For a moment, you consider whether to talk to him or leave it be. You decide he keeps too much to himself anyway.
“What’s wrong?”
His breathing becomes audible. His visor tilts toward your face, then back down, hanging low.
“I don’t...” He sits still, paused. “Gideon.”
You nod, even though he’s not looking at you.
“The child-- I’m not ready to part... with him. Or you, if it ever came to that.”
Your heart picks up, uncomfortably fast. You know better than telling him not to worry -- because he will -- and whether or not he does, the outcome will never change. Whatever it may be.
You find a spot to leave the container and join him on the floor, “He has no idea where we are, where you are.”
Din considers his reply. He can shut you down, tell you bad will come either way, but he doesn’t. He inches closer to you.
“You know you two…” Din loses track of his words, distracted by his hand falling onto your knee and the way you look at him, lovingly, even without a proper face to adore. “You two make it easy to… to care.”
You and the child, sleeping in his sling.
You encourage his vulnerability with a nod.
“And—” he gets up in swift movements, helping you up after him.
You stand planted, staring into the blackness where his eyes are, your mind flashing back to earlier when you watched him eating beside the child, getting just a whisper of his face. You’re reminded of the stubble casting a shadow over his chin.
You wait for him to move.
His hands smooth over your hair, the leather letting them pass effortlessly over your head. They stop, resting on and cupping your cheeks, thumbs brushing.
Then, his helmet moves closer. It’s slow, as if Din is considering what he’s doing, but he’s not. He’s making it slow to cherish it. To make it last; because this may well be the last peaceful moment for a long while.
Your foreheads touch.
For all the harsh, wild, relentless parts of him, this one is kind. This one is sympathetic, this one is gentle.
Your hands meet his sides, feeling him shudder so slightly, so involuntarily.
Din is warmer than he’s ever been.
A kov’nyn kiss is brisk, but Din stays there, connected to you over lightyears where he’s tender in your hold, unable to take himself away.
Hyperspace paints the sentiment blue.
Day 13: On excitement
There have been many excitements in my lifetime. They range from (as one of my friends think of me) superficial things to perhaps philosophical ones. Here we go.
1. Entering the bookstore
While one of my earliest excitement going to the bookstore was in Gramedia Sudirman, Yogyakarta, there is no less joy when I have to spend money in a bookstore. I remembered my aunt bought me an illustrative book of volcanoes while my cousin got the earthquake one, and we ate Dunkin’ Donuts afterwards. There was also a new bookstore opening, called Social Agency Bookstore, when upon its opening, they have many discounts, particularly on manga. I prefer Gramedia to Gunung Agung, as I think the latter’s collection is less. But the favourite retail bookstore in Indonesia has to be Togamas. Not only does it give you discounts, they also provide free plastic cover for the books you’ve just bought. I developed admiration for mas mbak penyampul since they work so fast and neatly. I tried to cover my books several times but they don’t come as perfect as ones done by mas mbak Togamas.
During my undergrad, I might have not immersed myself with books. I can only remember reading Murakami’s Norwegian Woods and 1Q84 (which is arguably one of the best romantic novels ever). And, of course, Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google. These books might motivate me to read books again after high school, and sure, I tried several Goodreads Challenges every year.
In the UK, I have Waterstones just in the corner of my campus. It is a four-storey building. All floors are carpeted so you will hear people trying not to stomp and walk quietly. Books related to my field are located on the third floor, where there is no lift. But there is a small spot when you could read there and even work on assignments. It is a quiet corner where you can see people taking a smoke outside the Faculty of Engineering. There is also a cafe with delicious cinnamon rolls on the first floor.
Tumblr media
Second bookstore that captivates me is Cambridge University Press Bookshop. I was roaming on the streets when it started raining and accidentally I was just on the outside of this gem. The building is three-storey, and it is quite small for what is one of the prominent press bookshops in the world. It is also no wonder to not see a rack dedicated to urban planning, though surely it contains the geography section.
I was definitely left in awe when I visited Blackwell’s in Oxford. Another friend told me that I should go there since the collection is humongous. And when finally I went there, I thought it’s the biggest bookshop that I ever visited and it contains a specific floor for social science. The Oxford University Press Bookshop is even smaller than that of Cambridge, and I remember I was questioning how come this university does not have what I am looking for. Yet in Blackwell’s, even two bookshelves are dedicated to urban planning and Southeast Asia. I also found Pisani’s Indonesia Etc., along with workpieces of Sir Batty. I spent almost £120 along with a tote bag that shouts for “Yes, I’ve been to Oxford but no I’m not a student at Oxford Uni”. Maria and I spent a solid 2.5 hours wandering in silence looking for what we like; she even spent £200 on five books which cover all the possible materials for her dissertation. All hails Blackwell’s.
2. Going places with close friends
The memory started in 2014, when my undergrad friends went to my hometown and tried Dieng for the first time. It was in January, so we didn’t catch the sunrise at Sikunir. Though Wonosobo has a scenic view, it’s not much to do around here except eating and talking.
I also consider the trip going back to Bandung with Bohokism after failing to say goodbye to Mira before she embarked for Stuttgart back in 2017. We had a really deep conversation where I finally did acknowledge my darkest times. It was also a start of something great because thanks to them, I also got motivated to be where I am today.
In the UK, I’m blessed to be surrounded by kind people. The one of trip memories started with a Bristol-Bath trip during the reading week in the first term. I happened to get acquainted with Hana and Aska, with Maria and Gineng also joined in. I remember the Cornish pasty that was so good I brought one to go. We wandered around Bristol and noticed the unicorn lightning rod on top of a building, and bought some Indomie and eggs to eat at our oh-so-comfy AirBnB. Afterwards we strolled on the dock and enjoyed the night breeze. The following day we went to an all-you-can-eat restaurant that gives a student discount so we could eat only for £10. We also had a photo session down in Bath Spa, as Hana is good with her camera. I also remember the bus going back to London when we sat by ourselves and did some Netflix and reading (clearly not me).
Tumblr media
The next trip would be the Scotland trip. Some said that enjoying the highlands is better in winter (as in going to Morocco), and indeed it was true. We arrived in Edinburgh and climbed the hills and stopped by the Department of Theology of Edinburgh University and realised that every university in London doesn’t have a similar ambience. We also checked in to every Christmas market or Winter Wonderland in every city we’ve been to, as Marwa really loves mulled wine. Our mandatory photo was taken at a photobooth but we just didn’t print it.
Tumblr media
We then proceeded to Glasgow and headed to the highlands. Like whoa. I have been seeing the mountainous scenery as I always live in the highlands but that doesn’t compare to what Scotsman see everyday. I also lived my childhood dream as finally I saw the mighty Loch Ness. It’s a sad thing that I couldn’t go to Isle of Skye, but that's alright since I remember having a really deep talk with Agita, Marwa, and Punyu at a hostel near Dundee city square. I couldn’t find Indomie so I had to eat local instant noodles which tasted horrible. We basically just read the Book of Questions and yeah I think that is what is making us closer afterwards.
Tumblr media
There were a lot of trips in between, but I have to emphasise my Cornwall trip with Albert, Maria, and Hana in September 2019. We were dying to enjoy the beach in the southwestern part of England. We rented a car with no insurance, where only Hana and Maria were able to drive the car smoothly. We packed lots of snacks and cooked in our small but comfy AirBnB. We went to St. Ives and enjoyed the beach and the drizzle. And the famous fish and chips. I always asked to stop for a chocolate twist and Maria and Hana would just sighed. Albert is always that curious guy who would end up falling but he didn’t. We also hung out at a beach bar where it was a family night, where the three of us had cider or beer while I stuck on soda and lime. We cooked every time and had only all-you-can-eat when we stopped by Portsmouth on the way back to London. We realised that we were so lavish that during the 3 days trip we spent almost 200 quids each.
Tumblr media
In the end, I agree that it’s not about the destinations as they will be just them. It’s always about the journey, the talk, the snack, the “e e awas awas!”, the “pake duit lo dulu dong”, and the memories, particularly with these chaps.
3. Getting called upon the stage
One thing I just realised that I will have to lower my expectations if I want to get an award or something alike. I remember seeing my seniors getting called and put in front of all students and their parents during the national exam results in junior high. Ten students were called along with their parents. I thought, at that time, like whoa they are smart. In high schools, only the top three students from natural science and social science class got called to the stage. Along with opening the result of SNMPTN and Chevening. I was thinking that I’d just be having a real good time along with my friends during the graduation when suddenly I heard my test number getting declared. I remembered that I couldn’t believe that fact and saw Eriska just congratulate me. I thought I was done after delivering a speech as I was an ex-OSIS guy, but I have to say that that day was quite specially wrapped.
Another case is when I went to Shah Alam by myself, presenting the research findings back in November 2017. I was the only Indonesian presenter there. The faculty members of the university holding the conference said that they knew some of my lecturers. As the conference was about research methods, I wondered why several presenters didn’t emphasise the novelty of their methods. But among six key tracks of the conference, I was awarded The Best Paper in Urban Planning and Development track, where I also just couldn’t believe it yet I couldn’t contain my excitement of getting my work noticed. I remember Maria putting it simply “Gue tau lo pengen karya lo yang diliat orang, bukan nama lo. Like let your works speak for yourself”. And yes, she was obviously right.
National T20 Cup - Haider Ali and Asif Ali get Northern off to winning start
Tumblr media
NewsMohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi, meanwhile, led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to a commanding win over Central PunjabNorthern 140 for 4 (Haider 58*, Asif 43*) beat Balochistan 139 for 7 (Amad Butt 34, Rauf 2-18, Nawaz 2-31) by six wicketsHaider Ali put himself back in the spotlight by smacking a 28-ball fifty to set up Northern's emphatic six-wicket victory over Balochistan in the opening game of the National T20 Cup in Rawalpindi. His knock, however, was overshadowed by Asif Ali's unbeaten 43 off 20 balls, which hurried Northern to their target of 140 with 18 balls to spare.Northern were 14-1 when Haider walked in, and he got off the mark with a first-ball boundary before smoking back-to-back sixes off Amad Butt to stamp his authority. He remained unbeaten at the finish, having hit seven fours and two sixes and registered his first half-century since February. Since then, he had only passed 20 three times in 19 innings across the PSL, international matches for Pakistan and the CPL.Northern needed 51 off 51 balls when Asif came in, and he survived an early chance when he was put down by Kashif Bhatti on 3. He never looked back thereafter, hitting four sixes and three fours to see his side home with ease.Having opted to bat first, Balochistan were reeling at 70 for 5 before Amad Butt (34 off 24) and Kashif Bhatti (24 off 25) added 66 to push them to a reasonable total. Both were taken down in a furious final over from Haris Rauf, who clocked 150 kph and ended with figures of 2 for 18. Mohammad Nawaz picked up two wickets as well.File photo - Mohammad Rizwan hit seven fours and a six in his 40-ball 65  Getty ImagesKhyber Pakhtunkhwa 187 for 5 (Rizwan 65, Iftikhar 40*, Hasan 3-30) beat Central Punjab 151 for 9 (Akhlaq 62, Shaheen 3-25, Arshad 2-14, Imran 2-37) by 36 runsDefending champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa made a strong start to their campaign by overwhelming a star-studded Central Punjab side by 36 runs. The victory was set up by sizzling knocks from Mohammad Rizwan (65 off 40) and Iftikhar Ahmed (40* off 25), who propelled KP to a total of 187, which was defended impeccably by the pace pack led by Shaheen Shah Afridi (3-25)After KP were put in to bat, Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman laid a solid foundation with an opening partnership of 67 in 7.3 overs. Rizwan then added 45 with Adil Amin before both fell in quick succession to leave KP 119 for 3 in 12.4 overs. Iftikhar walked in at this point and ensured the innings remained on track, smacking six fours and a six to apply the finishing touches alongside Mohammad Wasim, who made 11 off 7 balls. Hasan Ali was the only bowler to threaten KP's progress, picking up three wickets including that of Rizwan, and conceding 30 from his four overs.At the halfway point of their chase, Central Punjab were behind the asking rate at 71 for 3 despite the efforts of Babar Azam (29 off 22) and Ahmed Shehzad (24 off 16). Needing nearly 12 an over in the last 10 overs, Central Punjab couldn't find the push they needed, with no one able to provide Muhammad Akhlaq the support he needed while he scored 62 off 35 balls, with the help of six fours and four sixes. Shaheen's three wickets included those of Akhlaq and Faheem Ashraf, while Imran Khan and Arshad Iqbal picked up two wickets apiece. Read the full article
I WAS SLENDER AND FIT, GAINED TWENTY POUNDS AND NEVER LOST IT
Keep in mind, Steve’s story is still in the Key West of the 1970’s. He was not the only new face. There were others on the verge of achieving fame as well as those visiting who already were famous.
TACOS paragraph 22.
The Frenchman Rene lived upstairs next door / He had a Bistro down on the first floor / The name of the place was Le’ Mistral /It was the only French restaurant on Duval / Rene had just worked for the Shah of Iran / As his chef at the palace in old Tehran / He invited me to taste my first French food / I only went so I wouldn’t seem rude / I sat next to a play write whose name was Tennessee / He was having dinner with Truman Capote / Before that year I was slender and fit / I gained twenty pounds and never lost it / That season I left for Colorado to ski / Rene said success came too easy for me.
Florida doctors consider Governor DeSantis infected by a strain of “Trump.” He is an “harassment…..a clown…..and angry.” Florida’s coronavirus data support their feelings. Florida is now the number one state in the U.S. for number of virus cases. The State recently reported 10,389 hospitalizations. Twenty one thousand new infections this past friday.
DeSantis assures, guarantees in effect, no new lockdowns or mask mandates.
While hospitals are filling up, DeSantis shouts “Freedom over Fascism.”
Key West’s city government announced yesterday that masks are required once again to be worn in all governmental buildings. Key West apparently smarter than DeSantis. I suspect that within 2 weeks, masks will be required everywhere in Key West again.
The removal of the eviction ban. Crazy! The only one it benefits are landlords and banks.
The CDC eviction ban expired midnight sunday.
A recent Supreme Court decision written by Kavanaugh the problem. Does not surprise me he was the culprit. He wrote he recognized a need for relief. He further recognized the ban was to expire soon. Ergo, he ruled per the law. He said the issue was one Congress had to pass on. And did not extend the ban time wise.
He could have extended the time several months before Congress had to act.
Kavanaugh made one error. A major one.He forgot about the “people.” What would happen to the millions schedule for eviction?
An eviction at this time for those on the list of defaulters could take Congress months to consider. What were those evicted to do if the decision was forthwith in effect, as Kavanaugh did? Live homeless, sleep in cars, etc. Note most are families. Families include children. Children who will be forced to live in the mangroves or wrecked abandoned vehicles.
There is an added feature to the problem. One I do not understand.
Biden says there is about $47 billion the States and localities are holding for the specific purpose of making rents current. Biden asks why haven’t the States and localities used that money?
When Biden took office, he promised 70 percent of the population would be vaccinated by July 1 or 4. His estimate was 3 points off. Only 67 percent were.
The Republicans stomped their feet and yelled Bad!!! He failed to do what he promised!
Pure pettiness!
January 6 in the news this past weekend. Another Capitol police office committed suicide. The fourth since January 6.  His name Gunther Haschek.
Cheney understands what happened and its effect on the police that day. Remember she is a member of the House committee investigating January 6. She said, The police faced “unbelievable violence and cruelty” during the January insurrection.
Today is Tony Bennett’s birthday. Ninety five years. Happy birthday Mr. Bennett!
Many many years ago when I was a relatively young attorney, I was in New York City on business. I decided to have dinner in a steak house whose name I cannot remember. It was located in a hotel whose name I cannot recall. It was out of the way. In the East 70’s.
The steak house is now closed. Don’t know about the hotel.
I was alone. Opted to eat at the bar. For a New York City restaurant, the bar was unusually long.
Quiet that evening. Only 3 persons at the bar including me. No one sitting near me.
In walked Tony Bennett.
Guess he wanted to talk. He sat next to me.
I recognized him immediately. I learned he had an apartment in the hotel.
We chatted about everything for 3 hours.
The man was charming and humble. Genuine humility.
His attire impressed me. Sporty, yet sharp. A blue blazer, gray slacks, an open collared white shirt, and white tennis sneaks. He was not wearing socks.
It was a special evening.
Years later, Bennett was on tour. One stop was Utica. The theater was packed, his performance great.
I wanted to say hello. Decided I would go back stage to greet him. It would be no problem for me as I was Chairman of the Board of the corporation that owned and operated the theater.
There was a crowd back stage, of course. As I was walking towards the crowd, he turned and saw me. Exclaimed, “Louis!”
That was the man and I assume he still is.
Bennett is still performing, though he is afflicted with Alzheimer’s. He is not at the walking off alone or not recalling anything stage yet. He continues to perform and it is said his working protects him and keeps him going. He has a performance scheduled shortly with Lady Gaga.
Meghan McCain is leaving View after 4 years this friday. She is the daughter of one of America’s great heroes John McCain.
She is leaving because she has lung cancer. Interestingly, Meghan never smoked. I read that 20 percent of women who never smoked become afflicted with lung cancer. She will be having surgery shortly to remove half of one lung.
On one of the shows last week, she stated, There is no “good” Trump family members to me. Can’t blame her attitude. Her father was maligned by Trump and family many times.
I close with the Olympics.
Dutch representative Sefan Hassan’s performance interesting. She was in the final lap of her 1,5000 meter run. She was several runners behind at the time. The runner in front of her tripped and fell causing Hassan to fall over her.
Th end of the race for her? No way. She got up and continued her run. Now having many in front of her. She ran like hell! She won!
Another story involves the famous Simone Biles. Simone is the most decorated American gymnastic. She has won 31 Olympic and World Championship medals.
She had what she describes “mental problems” a few days ago. Flipping in mid air, she forgot what she was doing. Dangerous!
She decided she needed a break. She felt her problem was a mental one.
No one expected her to perform further in this year’s Olympics.
She came back 2 days later to win a bronze medal.
A gutsy young lady.
Enjoy your day!
Of all the places I have been to in Rajasthan, Udaipur is my absolute favourite. The lakes, the palaces, havelis, the food. Everything was magical. I remember having checked out from the haveli I was staying , I reached Bagore Haveli museum in the morning. The entry charges were 50 bucks which i didn't have change for. The architecture student who was there ,volunteered and paid for my ticket too. I offered to Paytm him. He refused that. I was touched by his kindness . So after chatting up and exploring the haveli together, I offered him a lunch treat at @royal_repast since I was anyway going there. So we walked our way through the humid heat into the magnificent house which hides behind a facade of old shops. The Bedla family runs this place and it is quite the hidden gem. Supposed to have hosted a range of celebrities from Queen Elizabeth to Shahs of Iran, one of the signature things of theirs is their Bedla sauce. Supposedly made with 32 ingredients and matured over 8 months, it had a spicy tart flavor which was used in 2 dishes, Gobi Lal Shorva & Handi Sula. The former a bright red curry with cauliflower & the latter lamb picata tenderised in Bedla sauce, cooked in a pot & smoked. Both were just mind blowing. The meat Platter I had other stellar stuff like Murg Dahi Bootha which was Chicken chunks Grilled in a tandoor in a Garlic yogurt Marinade, some ajwain flavored fish & khargosh ke kebab. Ground rabbit meat with spices and fried like shami kebabs a perfect reminder to the game hunting that used to happen in Mewar. That is what I really liked about Udaipur, there was a range of choices for both Vegetarian & non vegetarian palates.I was the only meat eating person of the two, so obviously I got half the platter packed for my return journey since it was quite a bit. Even the dessert we had was so unique.Doodhiya Kheech: Whole wheat kernels almost like pearls cooked in milk ,flavored with saffron, reduced to a creamy consistency. Just so delightful. Eventhough Rajasthan is right next door, getting good Rajasthani food especially meat is quite difficult to find in Delhi- NCR.This was easily one of my top dining experiences of 2019. I long to go back there (at Royal Repast) https://www.instagram.com/p/CClsO7EFlzQ2ZPQ2ZVulWqL8jPbj59kQ-TqD7Q0/?igshid=kttyo4uk5bmh
I go hounded through the glassgarden. Hungers hunts me; snaps at the haggardown heels of my boots. The plants here have gone untended, untame; flourished on their newfound wildness and the rain that cracks down on them through the broken panes of roof. Between every stand of overgrowth, the shadows are thick with scent though. The steam of simmering broth and sizzle of fat. Meals gone by and the smoke of a meal in the making.
Torture.
I duck under the eaves of a tree. It’s twisted, strange, not knowing what to do with its own size. Like it was clipped and pruned to stay small. But this one’s branches and trunk are outgrown, sprawling, grown huge and grown over with shoals of climbing vine—
Fuck it. No. Who writes this way? Who’d read and believe? Sit too close to the truth, it’ll burn you. Stories’re told the way they are for the sake of distance, framing. Make the real unreal enough to be bearable, believable. No one needs the inside of your head, Simra. The raw unvarnished matter of it? Fuck. Note this — Do what you do. Spin a story and scratch the above. Rewrite when you’ve got the time.
It was warmer in the glassgarden and I went hounded through. Hunger hunted me; snapped at the haggardown heels of my boots. Riftboots, riding-boots, ill-fitted to walking; standheeled to keep fair hold on a stirrup, and clicking on the stone flag floor.
Close the air around me, moist and muffling sound. Still I heard the carry of voices. Adrift and distorted, they reached me like the scent of their cooking. In snatches, in stirrings of gut and stammering heart. Sizzle of fat and the lingering muttony lure of meals roast days back, weeks back, clinging to the shadows and the soft wet air.
Torture.
The plants here had gone untended, untame. Wild for a century and some they’d sprawled and put out seed; bred and flourished in their newfound freedom. Fed on the rain that cracked down on them through the broken panes of roof above.
I ducked under the eaves of a tree. Twisted, strange, not knowing what to do with its own size. I’ve heard of such trees since – seen them in rich houses – clipped and pruned daily to stay their size so they grow in nothing but age. Surgeoned into ornaments. But this one had forgot the knife, the shears, the saw. Its trunk bulged and writhed and its branches eeled outward. Its arms clamoured up through the glassgarden roof to claw greedy after the sun. It had starved to death. Still, in its way, it lived: climbing vines hugged over its greyblack bark and fungus formed on its trunk like the scales on a fish, all grown one way in frills the colour of boiled pork.
By then I heard voices. Dunmeris, heavy accents, dialect unfathomable as music to me back then, or birdsong. They murmured, groggy and lazy — the satisfaction of those about to be sated. I took the wand from my boot and slipped it a little up and into the rags that wrapped my tunic sleeves, hidden in the long belled arms of my coat. Walked closer, stooping and close to silent.
Through a trellis screened in fork-leaved creepers I saw them. Four and a fire sided with stones, black from long use. Bedrolls and boxes, a heavy curtain of sailcloth slung over an eave in the roof. A wall of glass, lead-seamed, soot-smeared, looking out onto the city below. Easy to forget in this overgrown place that we were so high up — a roofgarden, skied with glass and sunk into a buildingtop like some half-lush vale or basin.
I waited. Watched. Their talk hastened. And then, like flames rise quick as a bird from smoke and stirrings in drywood, their talk changed.
“Ey skulk. Hind that wall. You, skulker!”
They had clipped into a broader Dunmeris, meaning to be understood. And understand that as they chose words for my benefit, so I choose theirs for you, translating the grind and chop of their speech into a Tamrielic that reflects it.
“Yeah you, skulk. Think we ain’t know you there?” A coarse voice, male-toned, weighty. “Tchaww! Thinks we ain’t know…”
“Shah… Come out on over, skulk.” Another voice and softer, coaxing. “We ain’t hurt you. Swear it onna ghosts. How’s that?”
Something wheezed over their words. A sound like stifled laughter. And choice had me stilled in its teeth. Flee or stray in closer.
“It’s bad people won’t share a fire in badlands and badtimes, skulk… Come you over. Got fire for you. Meat too if we like your look. A stew cooking.”
One muttered something in dialect, low and hurried. Another reached slow to their belt.
“Unless you’re bad people, yourself, ey? Tell it, skulk — are you?”
I felt the wand in my sleeve, secret and ready to slip free and into my fingers. I tried that thought on for solace, safety, and found it more than half hollow.
“I’ll come out…” My voice but thin and choked.
Heartbeat hot as thunder in my ears and throat and itching palms, but my hunger weighed them out. Days of it; a weight of weakness through me. I’d be little use for a fight, and shortwinded if I chose to flee. I found my way to the trellis end; stepped round and into sight.
They sat on boxes and chests. Lay on stuffed sacks like horkers at bay.
One stood and stared. Thumbs through his belt, scalp badly shaved, knife-kissed in scraps of pink and scab. A powerful build on that one but no weapons I could see.
Halfway behind him, another with tumbles of dust-coloured hair. A stocky shawlish scarf around his skinny shoulders and a slack grin glinting out his dish-round face.
There was another, skin palegrey and eyes manshaped, with a short and bunchedback tail of yellow hair. He was the one with the knife in his belt. A sheer slim filleting blade with an upticked point, and his fingers danced on its handle.
The woman among them was soft, big-middled, and dressed in a thick and napclothed gown, red as rust. Her head was shaven too, but neat-cut, down to velvet.
Between them all, a pot of something steamed.
“Only a grub…” the woman crooned. Hers was the softer voice. “Youngun, see.”
“Might be he is,” said the big mer, stubble and scab-headed. “He come dressed inna question though. That’s what I see…”
“I’m sorry,” I said. Not hard to play frail and threatless when I felt so much to be both. “I’m lost is all.”
The halfmer with the yellow hair and the knife gave a snort. “Must be. A goodlander in Old Ebonheart. I’d say you’re lost as shit.”
Roundface shuddered and shook his head, fitful, huddling neck and chin down into his shawl with eyes knit closed. His skin was hearthdust grey, bloodless and wan.
I took a step forward, towards the warm of their fire. Felt its heat on my empty palms as I truced them out before me. “Sounds about right.” I tried to smile.
“Come you over.”  The woman slapped a box next to her with a thick hand. She looked to Scabhead with asking eyes and he gave back a stunted nod. “We got plenty. Badlands ain’t so bad to us, ey? Look hungry. Are you?”
My nod was quicker, desperate. I remembered the pass in the mountains and the voices I heard from above. Not much more than a strip of a boy, they’d said. A lost little lamb. Toll’s off, little lamb. Eyes up. Siska, Vesh, Kjeld — they took me in for Winter when at first they’d thought to rob me. A testament to my inborn charm, or maybe even the goodness of people. Can’t be that everyone who homes in wild places means to hurt those passing through… I sat. My gut growled on cue.
“Not much longer then,” said the woman, stirring the squat black pot that steamed between them.
I craned for a look inside. A rich plush red in colour, bubbling gentle. Pale meat and pink knuckles of yam showed as she stirred. The scent was spiced, fermented. Preshta-jan and hot pepper.
“How long’s it you been inna city then?” Scabhead pressed me, frowning across the cookfire.
“A week?” I guessed. “Two at the most.”
“You ain’t know?”
“Not for certain. Things got confused. I was hurt…” Am hurt, I almost said. “Might’ve lost a day or two.”
“And where before that?”
“Off the plains. From the west.”
“The West,” grunted Scabhead. “That’s clear.”
What was that supposed to mean? I bit my tongue, knowing the answer. Outlander, emmigrant, revenant. Tongue lost and only half found.
“One of those then, hm?” said the halfmer. “Them that came through.”
“The caravan, yeah…” It hitched in my heart. I’d tried not to think backwards; tried not to give myself leave. Tammunei would stick in my throat if I did. Shurfa and Balambal and the rest would hang corpse-heavy round my neck. “You knew about them?”
“Was the talk of the tongs for a while, goodlander. Course we knew!”
The woman rag-wrapped her hands and hauled the pot off from over the fire to sit it on the seal-black floorstones, amongst the dust and the stickiness of past cooking. Strong shoulders, I noted; she lifted from the knees scarce at all. She placed a black iron breadpan on the dying heat and turned to a cloth-covered basket. Hungry as I was, I could smell starch, the bland satisfaction of rice…
“The tongs..?” I asked.
“Shah…” hushed the woman. “Greener than good good glass, this one!”
“Families…” Roundface stammered out.
“Gangs, houses…” said Scabhead. “Them hereabouts. Ebonhearters. Badlanders. People like us.”
“You too,” said the woman. “Now.”
She set a pat of rendered fat onto the pan. My guts twisted as I watched it melt. Watched her shape wet cooked rice with her hands. Grey mulch, smelling of salt as she worked it into stout little cakes and slapped them onto the hot black breadpan.
“That’s if you stay,” said the halfmer. “Live long enough. What split you off from them in the caravan anyway?”
The line of my lips thinned. I made a show of shrugging. “I like living. They were headed north, not knowing a blighted thing about where they were going or where they could stop, shelter. And with Winter coming? Fuck that. I’m Skyrim born. I know better.”
“Pshaw. Tell yourself that why ain’t you.” Scabhead brought out bowls from a cloth-packed box. “Thinks I that if you knew better you’d’ve split off long before. Stopped before the badlands.”
“Split…” Moonface blinked hard and shuddered again beneath his heavy roughcloth shawl.
“There’s shelter here,” I said. “Fuel to burn. And it doesn’t look like you’re lacking for food. I’ll stay put.”
Bowls and ladles and steaming stew. The first bowl went to the woman. After the others were served she passed me the last of the bowls. A stew of meat and yams – grown here, I wondered?; beneath the glass roof? – with a golden-black saltrice panbread half sunk in its red broth.  A hunger came over me, so strong it felt like sickness.  I hesitated, waiting for someone else to start.
“Eat,” Scabhead said. “Wouldn’t share if we couldn’t.”
No holding back after that. I wolfed the bowl. Burnt my tongue. Meat something like tender pork. I felt it catch between my teeth and worked it with my tongue long after the bowl was empty.
“We’re met then,” said Scabhead. “Host and guest. So, question. That coat…” He licked his lips. “I know that coat. How come you by it?”
I looked over at Roundface. Bowl between his knees, leaning down like a twisted tree over it, he steadied it with the stump of an arm come out from under his shawl. It was off at the elbow. With his remaining hand he mopped stew into his mouth with a sop of panbread. Broth ran down his shallow chin.
The food sat strange in me of a sudden. I hadn’t eaten so much or so richly in so long. It clouded my head like drink or the soonness of sleep.
“Asked you a question… Guls’s, ain’t it? Him of the Eggfarmers. They gone now?”
“I don’t…don’t know what you’re talking about. Found it’s all…”
The woman went over to Roundface and knelt by him. His mouth was trying slack to smile but a wetness had grown in his eyes. Her lips were moving; talking out something rhythmic.
And then my eyes were caught and I couldn’t look away. The stump that ended Roundface’s arm had begun to shift, crawl, things at work under the skin. Bloodless and strange, something broke through the layer of cauterised flesh. Bones, I thought at first. But they were fingernails, child-small and sharp, pink as coral.
The woman was chanting, slow and soft as crooning to a baby, as she rubbed Roundface’s back and shoulders. The others picked up the chant. And the halfmer poured a ladleful of stew red onto the coals. It stank of iron and bile and my gorge rose. It was dialect again; words not meant for my understanding. But of the words I caught, I heard words that might have meant sacrament, and gift. Last of all I heard a name, spoken in love and thanks.
Namira.
The sailcloth curtain rippled, pulled at itself. A curdled scream came from behind it. I felt it echo in my head like my own but my voice wouldn’t come. Like in night terrors when fear is a choking silence. The taste of retching, metallic on my tongue, I scrambled up and ran, blind and fast, thinking of nothing but to empty my stomach of the flesh I’d eaten.
